'If It's Football, It's Vital'

The Report: Spurs v Stoke.

Greetings one and all.

Well, let's get the negativity addressed. I care not for comments suggesting Stoke were poor, are poor, are under strength. We too have been at times this season so I am more than happy with our performance as opposed to the so called lack of Stoke's. Positive from here on in, no excuses, just the way it is.

What a great performance by the team, all of the team. We trounced Stoke and with some better finishing from our forwards the scoreline reading 5 or 6 nil would not have been out of order. Adebayor and Soldado both guilty of missing chances you'd expect them to bury, their goals will return, and at least they are getting in the correct positions in the first place. It was a joy to see Adebayor tracking back and helping out at times, something I suggested would have to happen if we were to play 4-4-2, Soldado worked the channels and came deeper at times, something we have seldom seen this season. Some may argue that he needs to be in the box to score, maybe, but in this system strikers will have to drop deeper at times. He was still in the box numerous times and could have scored one or two. Nice to see us getting numbers in the box yet again when attacking.

Right, the team, Lloris had very little to do, well done 8th clean sheet in prem this season. The backline, again little to do, Dawson, penalty claim to discuss amongst yourselves. For me, think he might just of got studs on the ball, but you can't take the player as well these days. Seen them given. Fryers was also close to maybe giving one away. Other than that I thought all the defenders coped well, did everything that was asked of them and did it well. Midfield was all about moving the ball quickly, it was much more fluid, looked so much more natural. Players were moving, wanting the ball, passes were forward and dribbles were purposeful and effective. Paulinho was immense, loved that flick and the guys energy. Amazing what a rest can do, imagine what kind of talent we'd have if he can find his scoring touch. Dembele played well, he beats every man so effortlessly and once past seldom can the player win the ball back.

We saw Eriksen Left and I thought he too had a good game, he kept the ball moving well and I for one appreciated some of his intelligent passing, he covered a lot of pitch and linked well with his team mates often popping up in the middle. Lennon, yes my boy, more of the same please, numerous pullbacks, constant running in behind their backline and in general, a right thorn in their side for the duration. Top this off with a very well taken goal and he had a very constructive afternoon, excellent. Soldado, as stated worked hard, and although still not scoring regularly from open play he is putting himself in these positions, goals I'm sure will come from open play. Pretty assured with those penalties though isn't he?. Ade, well where would we be if we'd had him all season?, he can be a handful, and a couple of times I saw him moaning about not receiving the ball. I like that, it shows desire, a drive to score and win, it shows you care. Lamela, Chadli and Capoue were called upon, and all performed well with Capoue not having to do much. Lamela I can see has got the tools, his passing was intelligent and crisp and pretty much always seemed to find the target. I would love to see him get a run of games, but a Right winger he is not, so here lies a problem. Chadli had a 10 minute cameo, not much to comment on that.

In summary, I'm loving the fact we are back scoring, I'd like Soldado to start bagging a few, the pace has returned and we look more relaxed in our style, even enjoying the football once more. Whether a 4-4-2 will work at all times, who knows, but at present it is a joy to watch regardless of whom we play. I for one will never get bored of watching Spurs put the ball in the net. Dembele, more of that please, beat one or two and let's start lacing them in. It appears you've got it in your locker, great goal. Lennon, again, have some confidence to shoot, Paulinho does and he hits row z most weeks. give it a go, some may just fly in.

Closing thoughts.....Why do we still give the ball away so many times from throw ins?, Why are corners so poor? Why does Charlie Adam always feel his season is incomplete until he injures a Spurs player?. This 3-0 result was just the tonic pre Manchester United, a 90 minute performance, please, let's try and enjoy it for what it is, an improvement. Let's not forget, many were saying Hull, Palace, Cardiff were poor. Don't recall performances like this against them. Excellent result, happy days. Wait to the injured return, twice in 3 games now I have had to write about the fact that we could have quite easily scored 5, that's telling me something. Let the good times begin. I LOVE IT!!!.

Cheers Cider ... Just watched the game again. It was so good to see a Spurs team attacking at pace and looking for goals. We did not have one poor player on the pitch and the win was due to a complete team effort. Even though there was little pressure from Stoke throughout the match, it was great to see what we can do when we play as a team. Paulinho and Dembele were magnificent, Chiriches overcame his recent poor form, Ade and Soldado proved, once again, they should stay together, Lennon proved (to me) that he can play without Walker, Dawson collected everything in the air, Naughton showed he is a much better (and more confident) player on the right, and Lamela had a good cameo appearance and showed what he could be capable of if given some freedom to roam. Our passing and possession were excellent and the desire and hunger was evident for all to see. It looked like the players were all given freedom to play to their strengths; so perhaps Sherwood’s team talk was along the lines of, ‘enjoy yourselves and run about a bit’! We badly needed a home game of this nature. It is not a defining moment in our season, but it does offer more hope than we had a few days ago and gives us some optimism for the rest of the season. Adams is a thug. He has no pace and looks to injure players he feels threatened by. Good article Cider. Nice to see the team playing well and enjoying themselves. Clearly they were stoked for the game (groan) and playing to a system everyone understands and enjoys playing. Ade is a big plus, makes all the difference in the final third and if we can play Dembele in more advanced positions, Spurs will cause any team headaches. Lennon is a great player for Surs. Every player hates to defend against pace and Lennon has it. Every team in the Prem would love to have him in their squad. I've read a few posts against Lennon and I agree he doesn't score enough but he does enough to merit a place. Just his name on the teamsheet will worry the opposition defence. COYS!

Morning Lads. A win is a win. It helps to build confidence and we surely need this before travelling to United. Last time we beated Stoke at the Lane Modric and Crouch were on the scoresheet...let's try to keep the mood up. By the way, Paulinho is a player I surely want to see at OT. Is there any news about his injury ??
AlexSpur
Very fluid I thought. Not really a 442 performance. Ade dropped deep a lot and Soldado occasionally. Good switching in midfield too. Naughton looked good too
mattkk
Great summary/thoughts Cider. I was at the game yesterday too and that is the most positive I have seen us play at WHL for a long while. We kept it simple, moved it well and ALL the players worked hard - Soldado and Ade, yes boys, lets have that kind of effort every week please. Dembele was a cut a above, that lad could be anything he wants if he just forces the play a bit more and drives forward. He has a great shot in his locker so use it man! Paulinho looked like he was playing on a beach back home in Brazil thats how easy he found it and Ericksen was all over the pitch wanting the ball. Lennon looked hungry but still wasted his opportunities a bit too much for my liking. He needs to be more clinical. In general really postive stuff.
arpant
Very goo d game. I don't go for this 'Stoke are rubbish' nonsense, we weren't gonna let them play anyhow. Our midfield is colossal, has been all season. It's our area. Teams SHOULD struggle and SHOULD find it difficult against us. Brom, Hull, Norwich - we should 'Liverpool' these teams. I even wondered whether Paulinho and Dembele were too similar to play together... It's HOW you play them and Sherwood is getting it spot on.
jerkinmahjurgen
Very good read Cider, and geof good post. James agree Adam and I just watched the highlights did anyone see a stoke player sort of slap Paulinho's head when he was walking off after Adam nobbled him? Couldnt see who it was would love to find out and send the mrs round to nut the fekker...Come on lets name and shame. What news on Paulinho?
tophobunty1882
I'm sorry but I must have being watching a different match WRT Lennon. He is a player I have always been a fan of. However. His determination to the cause has gone. His tracking back his willingness to help out the defence. The one thing I would say is his saving grace for his incredibly poor goal and assists return over the years he has been at the club. He looks grumpy. Always moaning about this pass and that. In stead of running back to help a right back out he is strolling around the halfway line. Then on counter attacks you can see him strolling from halfway line towards the final third (unless he's in possession of the ball). He looks overweight and a shadow of the his best ever season (SOME 8 YEARS AGO) of 8 assists and 4 goals.... And is that enough? Really? Honestly? Can any Spurs fan really say that if Lennon can match his best ever performance (almost a decade ago) that 12 goals from our most experienced (in terms of EPL) winger only contributing that? I Personally feel that Aaron Lennon is one of the things that has been holding us back. He is a one-trick-pony or rather a greyhound chasing a rabbit. He is awful from any crossing position and his only cause for claiming an assist is if he cuts it back from the edge of the box. I'm sorry, along with Dawson and Defoe I feel that these 3 are the deadwood. Lennon has been at us for almost a decade and if he was really that great then surely at some point in that tenure he would have had some interest from any club looking for improvement/english talent. Sorry. He can run really fast and that's it. And that appears to be fading fast. His performance bar - one volley - was the only negative from the match yesterday. I see some sites rate his performance as 8/10. IMO MADNESS. Unless a goal counts for 3 points.
mellowchaos
Nice one Cider, totally agree with your positive comments.Hate to crow but all season I've begged the manager to play Ade & Soldado together despite so many negative critics of Ade.Glad to be proved right on that one.Good to see Loris catching the ball instead of haphazardly punching the ball to our opponents.Dembele is so dangerous when he plays higher up the field-more goals from him I,m sure.Paulinho always a class act just needs to keep a cool head wnen shooting.Lennon brilliant.Lamela definitely improving,I'd like to see him playing just behind the strikers.More of the same against United please.Well done Tim.
Greavesaboveall
I though Lamela played well off the right and think he can play there, like Eriksen does on the left. Trouble is when both sides do it it affects the width. I think he can play as one of the front two as well. Dembele has already shown what he can do at Fulham, scoring and assisting to the tune of dragging £15m from us. It's been Tottenhams' fault, not Dembeles', for his recent lack of effect. Clear whats been going on to a blind man, and Sherwoods comments that you put people in the right places go some way to reading between the lines. Paulinhos' flicks suggest we're not 'so' worried if we do lose the ball. Everyone knows the score - we'll have to win it back, but you have to take risks. Smacks of good leadership. Appointing TS could well be, in hindsight, Levys' trump card.
jerkinmahjurgen
I was at the lane yesterday! What a game to travel for! Great football. 3 goals! Lennon could have had himself a ha trick if he had more confidence to shoot! He kept passing to The wings from scoring positions, but delighted to see him score a great goal! It was great to see us playing with purpose, if we go out and do that again on Wednesday I can't see utd beating us! Great atmosphere at the lane too!! COYS

you have been mellow, watch the SKY highlights again and listen to the commentator again. Lennon played very well yesterday and if anyone thinks he didnt it is based on something else, not the match yesterday. He was at least good. For you to take the time for such a long peace for something so clearly not as it was suggests something else driving you here. What do you think it is mate?
tophobunty1882
mellow ... you watching the Fulham game!
Geofspurs
mellow ... also, a goal often counts as 3 points.
Geofspurs
Good performance, good result, impressive margin of victory, and a clean sheet. This is exactly how we should blow teams away in PL games at WHL, it should only be the top teams that should live with us at home, we should be doing what we did to Stoke yesterday, to the likes of Hull City, West Ham Utd, and WBA, all of whom have caused us to struggle at home this season, the least said about the Newcastle defeat, and the Liverpool debacle the better. The appealing thing is the sudden positivity in our play since the demise of "lap top man", we are no longer playing 20 passes to get nowhere, when one forward ball will do. All we need now is to get some players back from injury, we must be consistently the team worst affected by injury in the PL, Allardyce constantly moans, but he should have our list of injured players, and he would know about it. Now we have Paulinho injured, following another act of thuggery by Adam (Gareth Bale's favorite player). Another priority. It is also vital that we get our strikers striking. With Adebayor and Soldado appearing to play well together, all they need is to finish, if you ignore penalties, Soldado's return is woeful.
Frank
I hope TS is not thinking for one minute of playing his "home formation" and team set up at either Old Trafford, next time out, or at Emirates in the FA Cup, surely he has a Plan B alternative game plan, to tighten up the game against better opposition.

Mellowchaos, you have to accept we'll have some Englishmen in our side...What you gain in one hand, you'll lose in the other. Dawson turns like the titanic and is not pacy, but is useful in the air, at corners [both ends]. still doesn't rest on his laurels, and is also captain. By no means top, top drawer but with enough qualities to help us along where we are. Lennon is a player who would worry any opposition. A lack of 'actual assists' is not always the providers fault. He put a couple of good balls into the box y/day - we know our strikers missed guilty chances - and as the system has changed again it's likely that will happen. Keep your eye on it. Sherwood 4 games - Lennon 1 goal, and hasn't played them all. If only AVB hadn't ripped apart what Harry built up... Defoe has always been a 1 in 3 striker - not quite good enough - but by no means a bad choice 3rd striker. I believe he can play up front on his own, would be a fantastic No. 10, can score, assist, is a weapon from the bench, but we could upgrade and if he goes to America we'll cope for sure.
jerkinmahjurgen
Patience Frank,Soldado will soon start hitting the net.I think he's forgotten what it's like to get chances in the box thanks to AVB's lousy tactics. With Tim at the helm he's gonna get plenty of service now.
Greavesaboveall
Yesterday was much better. With players still to come back from injury we just need to bed them back in. I would love to see Lamela start games like yesterday. I hope he stays and we start to see the best of him. Walker and Rose can offer the width if we start with Lamela and Eriksen on the flanks. See not sure about Soldado though. Has looked better recently but I'm still not sure he has what it takes to cut it in the league. If Defoe was to leave in this window then we will need another striker. I would like that to be Berb. Good stop gap and still class for a few more years. I'm a little worried about the players we are linked with. The Man U left back is not good enough. Also the stories about having to sell before we can buy. Yes I know we spent a lot of money but most of it was from player sales. Will the owners ever put their own money into the club. Surely if you appoint a new manager you have to back him in the transfer window.
nothappyharry
To complete a good weekend seeing West Ham fail to beat WBA and therefore staying in the bottom 3 was lovely. If only we could have done them at the Lane, that would have had them deep in the sticky stuff. I would love to see the porn kings Messrs Gold and Sullivan and their clever bitch Brady get relegated, fail to get back next season, then try to fill the OS with championship fixtures, it would be hilarious watching their financial stern disappear beneath the waves.
Frank
Jerk, we have to accept we will have some englishmen in our country, sometimes it doesnt appear that way but it really is......ohhh nothappy you sound like you are drawing up a plan for inverted wingers with fullbacks doing the attacking there, now let me think were i have heard that one before. 1 step forward and 87 back.
tophobunty1882
What it comes from is that in the last 3 and a half seasons we have seen the best finishes in our PL reign. But our magical winger has contributed just 18 assists in 101 games. Less than one in every 5 appearances. And just 12 goals in the same time. Just 1 in every 9ish games. The comparison is a bit harsh as he was exceptional last year but Bale in one season VS Lennon in 3 and a half seasons sees Bale created/scored 39 goals in all competition vs Lennon 30 goals created/scored in 3 and a half years. Um. Pretty telling. Lennon in 326 appearances in all competition for the club just 30 goals... Really? 326 appearances and just 63 assists?
mellowchaos
I enjoyed the article. Ade dropped back a lot and helped the team despite the highly criticized 4-4-2 by some fans. Great point from Cider about our performances against Hull, Palace, Cardiff who were also poor. Did Paulinho blossom because of the 3 match ban or because AVB is gone and he now has more freedom?
logos8
mellowchaos you forget to mention how many chances Lennon has created. Just because they weren't converted it doesn't mean they weren't good hard worked chances.
logos8
nothappyharry I agree regarding berbatov for a season or two. He would cost about 2 mil and will definitely spice things up a bit (in a good way). Regarding the need to sell before we buy, I won't be surprised if we see one or two players go (siggy one of them). If Real and Monaco still want Walker for 20mil I don't know if I would want him to go, even though it looks like we might have a decent replacement for him.
logos8
Stoke were poor, there's no avoiding that, so why be tired of hearing it. That being said, Spurs were good, there's no avoiding that either.
Falstaff the Fool
I have just posed the poll for your MOTM vote!

Anyway - Like all criticism I lay on Spurs or their players is that i want to see better. Sure. If Lennon can create an assist every 2-3 games and score at least every 5-6 games then we will have a player he feigned that he would be 8 years ago. Prove me wrong and i'll admit it. But I say If he scores more then 3 goals this season and has more then 6 assists i will be incredibly surprised.
mellowchaos
mellowchaos when Bale was still around, Lennon was creating about the same amount of chances as him. It's easy to criticize players using numbers when you are biased. Mind you Modric's goals and assists are not pretty stats either but he was and is one great football player. Not saying Lennon is at the same level but definitely not as crap as you and Big C/fanny think he is.
logos8
mellowchaos....If i may, Assists and goals from Lennon, i'd agree more would be great, a point that appears to be overlooked however is as follows, A pacy winger can actually have a massive influence on a game by his sheer presence. It can at times nullify opposition attack down said flank for fear of a speed demon counter attack. Lennons pace alone can be deemed as a sort of defence, as for negative yesterday?, i have thought the RW has looked in better shape since Lennon's return and he could have easily had 2 assists registered by his name, that was down to the strikers. I'd like to see him shoot more, but i've seen him tear many a LB a new one (Evra included).Certainly glad he's a Spurs player.

"Why does Charlie Adam always feel his season is incomplete until he injures a Spurs player?"

Do you forget that he expected to be signed as a Spur's player by Harry? A person once scorned...

So, he's an evil little pedaço and he should be banned as such.

Falstaff the Fool
Does anyone know the extent of the injury suffered by Paulinho and when he might be back. We saw the real Paulinho for the first time yesterday in all of its glory. Don't want to lose that from our side. I'm waiting for a healthy Paulinho and a healthy Sandro unleashed in the post AVB era. There won't be a better pair in midfield in any club in the world. COYS.
Falstaff the Fool
mellow, i think you have an issue with Lennon and its a pattern on this board which you are now following. Quoting assists from a winger is a bit, well North American/Canadian. He created two VERY good chances yesterday which the forwards failed to take, they could have been assists, but it was GREAT play from Lennon. You dont like him and this is therefore a pointless discussion. esp having it a day after we won and he VERY CLEARLY played well.
tophobunty1882
I declare myself out of this lennon fest now, wont feed it. Anyway anyone want to talk about the match yesterday and Cider's very good piece?
tophobunty1882
Saying more assists and goals would be great from Lennon is a laugh. He will never be more then what he is. Having someone on our side just for his ability to run is RIDICULOUS. That pace is going to go soon. My opinion is that it already has started to go. He runs far less in a match then he used to. He used to pick it up in his half and would speed down the wing. He used to track back at all times and still be able to go forward in the same breath. He doesn't or cant do that any more. He's turning 27 soon. In the prime of his footballing years as is said. The body is going to go and then what are we left with?
mellowchaos
Right,....about this 4-4-2. Yesterday it worked very well, reason being it was not a rigid 4-4-2. I loved the fact players were popping up everywhere, numbers in the box, quick passing. There was a real sense of intent and fluidity to our game. I for one was concerned initially about the 4-4-2, and said i thought it would only work with strikers adding more to their game by dropping wide/deeper as required. With the likes of Paulinho, Dembele and Eriksen often adding numbers in and around the box it allowed for Ade and soldado to be more flexible in build up. I still have my reservations whether it will suffice for the duration of the season, but yesterday was an excellent example of how this system should and can be played. for that, Mr Sherwood, credit is due.
Cider spurs
guys leave mellow to his own arguement, he is not making any sense and just seeking a pointless argument. Ignore and enjoy the fact that SPURS the team we all support beat a lower half team at home VERY WELL. Something we have not done at all well for 18 months.

mellow....You said "just for his ability to run"....I did not. Just one of Lennon's strengths. As already posted, how many goals and assists from Modric?. Before you tell me he was a CM how is he supposed to chip in. Alex Song had 13 assists to his name the season he left Arsenal to join Barca, he played DM. What we saying Modric is rubbish. Stats don't always stack up, or tell the whole story do they?
Cider spurs
Cider, with Ade up for it, its fluid, this is not a set in stone 442. Not sure I would risk this away to United, but United sure are better going forward than going backwards and not the best united at all. Its a decent enough start buy the new team at least we are back on the front foot and moving it quicker. Step1 one, many more required along with horses for courses.
tophobunty1882
there are a number of notable exceptions on this atricle after a spurs win, I fond that really puzzling, why are they not here? at a conference or committee meeting?

tophobunty1882 spot on - that was our most fluid and commanding home performance since beating the geordies 5 nil at home back in Jan 2011.

I would like to see our 4-4-2 be a disguised 4-6-0, and I think at times it is. LOL. It almost is as is, with Ade and Soldado circling back and moving onto the wings, and with Paulinho, Erickson, Dembele, etc., moving into forward positions. The joy of a disguised 4-6-0 is that the opponent cannot mark a man because they never know who is in the midfield and who is forward in the next moment. The disguised 4-6-0 is a variant of the 4-3-3, where the members of the one 3 and the other 3 can trade places at any moment when the ball changes hands. Paulinho, for example, can be in either the middle 3 of the front 3 on any sweep down field as can any on the others. (Of course, some players are better suited in the back, rather than the front, three, e.g. Capoue.) And when the 4-4-2 is used to disguise other formations, then the 4-6-0 and the 4-3-3 are variants of a general strategy rather than merely being formations. So, when an opposing manager prepares for the 4-4-2, at any moment his team can be facing a 4-6-0 or one of its disguised variants.

One never knows who is the Scarlet Pimpernel who can change identities on the fly. (By the way, just as the original Hotspur was a Sir Percy (Sir Harry Percy), so was the Scarlet Pimpernel, who took on a different identity--a different role in the formation--in a moment's transition. Sir Percy (Hotspur) and Sir Percy (Blakeney). Hurrah for the man mounted with hot spurs sweeping forward with his identity unknown until the forward dashing sweep has been done.

Come On You Sweeping Hotspurs. Sweep forward with a sense of style and glory and with a magnificent sense of strategy in disguise.

Lets give credit to Sherwood for excellent performance. The boxes were ticked-fast tempo with quick one-twos, passing forward not sideways, and three goals at home ! not seen since February 2012. Naughton looked good in correct position. Soldado sure can take a penalty ! Tougher tests to come but very promising.

Today I feel 18 months younger. It's like I woke up this morning and realised that the last 18 months of turgid, constipated, side-side-back, slow-slow-still football we have endured was nothing more than a nightmare. Phew what a relief! How lovely to see players in Spurs shirts able and willing to express themselves, to take a risk and move the ball forward. They even had the temerity to crack a smile or two! Whatever next? 3 goals in a game? Oh yes indeed! I'm sure the way forward will not be without its tests but at least we're moving forward or at least trying to. Now back to my nightmare.... side, side, back, slow, stop, side, side, back, stop........

The way Soldado takes penalties tells me he does not lack confidence ... he just gets very frustrated, which is understandable, given how the season has gone so far. No striker, without confidence, could score 5 penalties as easily as he has done.
Geofspurs
Cider the atmosphere was still muted, when the players attack and up the tempo we sing when there is a lull it can be like a morgue. Its been like that ever since ive been going which is since the mid 80's. We have never been the most vocal and we arent the quietest crowd either (just ask that lot up the road who get 60,000). One thing I will say is that when we do sing - there arent too many grounds I would rather be at

Falstaff the Fool good post and an example of what happens when you give the players freedom. As long as they are aware of potential vulnerabilities and have the responsibility to defend when needed, they can move around the pitch to try and create chances. I have seen Ade several times in the middle of the pitch with 3 other players in front of him in or right outside the box. That's how you eventually break defenses, by constantly trying to improvise with unexpected movement. That was the problem with AVB's rigid tactics and that's why we ended up passing sideways and backwards. This time they did not look to run around like headless chicken like some said in order to defend avb and laugh at TS. This time they linked up very well , tracked back when needed, covered and got the job well done as a unit. Also we have to understand that the busy schedule makes it hard for Tim to implement the new approach in training because there is no time for training with so many fixtures in a short period of time.

Thanks arpant. I must admit it does seem to go from one extreme to the other. I do however feel i have the solution. Attack!, Attack!, Attack!.

I am going to the Citeh game next month. I hope we continue to improve. Could be one of the games of the season if we are still in the top four hunt. I am still very skeptical about Tim for the long term, but we have scored three goals in two of the three league games Tim has been in charge. It's about getting the balance right. Under AVB we couldn't score but were not conceding until AVB starting messing with his tactics and confidence was low. Then we still couldn't score but let in a hat full. Hence why he was sacked. Now we are scoring and lets just hope Tim has a lot more up his sleeve that we don't know about. Hopfuly we are not going to be conceding a hat full as a result of going gung ho and there is a method what Tim is doing. It sure is a lot more fun watching us play now:).

My thoughts precisely Cider! Give a Spurs crowd a high tempo game we will sing our little hearts out, even if we lose 3-4! nut jobs the lot of us!

Erikson is my only moan. His freekicks/corners are awful and he loses th ball all the time. I'd rather see Lamela given 3/4 games in that position

I've said all along that we have some very skilful players. the shackles just needed loosening. Yesterday was not gung- ho, it was a very assured, dominant performance. AVB became to narrowminded with his rigid formations. Players were unable to express their talents in the manner which attracted the club to their signing in the first instance. Still early days, but the changes and desire are already bearing improvement. If Tim can keep the players enjoying their football, which is of great importance, keep the squad as a whole happy and cohesive, get the wounded back playing, we may just have a very exciting, entertaining second half to the season. Again, i will comment on the trials and tribulations faced by numerous elements concerning Spurs this season and say how impressed i am that we are still only 3 points of fourth spot. Many have said or believe we have had a poor 1st half of the season, i can't deny the amount of injuries, top class striker omission would not have a detrimental effect on our performances. If this is where we are after all we've endured. A fit squad, approachable manager and intent, could well see us climb the table. Long way to go, but to be fair, fromwhere we've come this season. Should be a doddle. Here's hoping. ;-)

asherthesmasher - would we be playing Naughton, Daws, Clriches * & Fryers ahead of Walker, Vertonghen, Kaboul, Rose? I felt a little sorry for AvB - the timing of our injuries didnt help his cause and Sherwood is making a good fist with what we have avaiable which is half the battle! No doubt we will strengthen again and hope we have our first choice team available for City and Everton at home in a month or so
arpant
oh the pain of it.
tophobunty1882
AVB was pants. The King is Dead. Long Live The Sherwood. Bring on United. Sudden changes in system and style do not bring consistency so I'll be expecting us to play '442' again. It will be difficult for Tim to keep up with AVB's away record. I'd take two draws for the next two games as successful.
jerkinmahjurgen
Obviously it's hard to say if Spurs were so good because Stoke were so bad, or, if Stoke were so bad because Spurs were so good. The answer is in there somewhere but the truth of it will never be known. However, we will get a better picture after a few more games ... and it's looking very promising so, ... more of the same please! TDITD!

So Real Madrid are keeping tabs on Paulinho. Think we'll have to sell him so Arsenal can buy Benzema. I don't think many fans would suck this one up this time round.
Cider spurs
Lennon did well... he was out previously cos had a stomach problem, so perhaps was not his usual self, in tracking back and surging forwards all the time. Still he scored his goal very well.. Good positive efforts by the team.. Or did he not need to track back as much cos Naughton was better positioned than walker ?
Block D Spurs
spu 4 life ... that's a devastating tale. Good luck to the man hope his wish comes true many times over. Cider ...... Thanks, I enjoyed your precis of the game yesterday. Great result and good football from TS Spurs. He's made a good start in his managerial career. We'll have to wait and see if he can/does alter his tactics to suit the opposition.
longtimespur
Lennon was bloody good yesterday, as was Eriksen, and anyone who says otherwise is talking nonsense. I can't criticise any of our players on yesterdays performance. They all played very well.
MAN ON!
I`ve given my man of the match vote to Naughton,Paulinho was man of the match but just felt Naughton deserved some recognition.
Naughton has been getting stick from Spurs fans,he gets positioned on the left where he`s complete rubbish, but on the right we have a different animal.
I used to rate Walker but he`s same as Dawson, far too error prone & imo the mistakes out number the occasional brilliance.Stoke should have had a penalty yesterday, poor refereeing because Dawsons tackle was clumsy & a clear penalty.
For me Naughton was neat & tidy but it was hard to really judge being Stoke were so poor, did we play well or just have it too easy? IMO a bit of both, but no denying Stoke did not turn up.
I think it will be poor management to put Walker back in for naughton as naughtons reward for a pretty much flawless game is to be dropped, that`s not the right message.Keep naughton right back & make Walker fight his place back,Walker may improve knowing he has real competition.
Walker went from a great potential right back,to a right back whose got his head on too many other things, his concentration & positioning is poor & that`s because all the hype has gone to his head & his head is not 100% on the game.
Well done Lennon, good goal but that needs to be more consistent,1 or 2 goals a season is not good enough. And learn to cross.Thin line being a great winger & an average one, picking your man out,Defoe & Soldado delivered great crosses for Adebayors recent goals, should be wingers doing that as bale used to.
I`m with mellowchaos,& when comparing Walcott to lennon,it`s not even close,Walcott is far superior & he`s not world class either, but Arsenal have a fine attacking player there. At one time Walcott & Lennon were neck & neck,Lennons got worse & Walcott has flown out the blocks, his finishing is sheer class at times.
I hope lamela improves because i see a fantastic player there, but he needs more minutes.
Fanny adams
Great performance and great result against Stoke. As Frank said earlier though I hope TS has a different formation in mind for Man Utd at Old Trafford. Although we tried a pragmatic approach against City and Liverpool and lost 11-0.
MrSpurs
Mellowchaos- your azza fixation is seriously dilutional dude. According to the MOTM poll here on vs lennon has 16% of the vote which makes him our third best player behind dembele and pauli. You gotta chill out man, the wee fella hasn't scored in long time and you choose to crit him on the day that he scores and could even have bagged atleast two assists if we had better strikers. That's really f'd up bro. Azza is a cult hero and should be appreciated for being rated as our best right-sided player by no fewer than 5 different managers (jol, ramos, arry, avb and now sherwood). People moan about naughton having to play left back and it not being his best position but how many times over the past 9 years were lennon forced to play on the left wing as an inverted winger? Did he complain? No. He just gets on with it for the benefit of the team while people like GB grabbed all the headlines. Stats don't always tell the whole story. I am pretty sure had there been stats which showed assist to the assist and assists which was not converted by the strikers then lennon would be top 5 at worst or top 3 even.
neymar
...... I would like TS to go with a counter attacking 4-2-3-1 at Old Trafford with Sandro and Capoue just sitting in front of the back four breaking up Uniteds play. In front of them have Lennon, Lamela ready to break from Dembele in the middle with Adebayor upfront. At least then we have the option of bringing in Soldado, Eriksen, Holtby if we need to chase the game.
MrSpurs
Falstaff have you changed from TK name.. cos you were the only one talking of 460 shape before... and your posts are similar nature.. yr views, and a bit of education ...welcome back..

Fanny Dawson clearly touched the ball first. I am way down Dawsons xmas card list but seen it with my own eyes 10 times, he got the ball first.
tophobunty1882
The handball which led to the penalty against palace...surely that should go down as an assist for lennon?
neymar
Lots of comments about Lennon on here. Lets look at stats/facts..one goal since March; no assists this season; never takes a corner; never shoots; used to be a top international; is only 27;he is (used to be?) fast. He could be fantastic but is satisfied with an easy life. Solution:- practise kicking a dead ball; practise volleying; practise shooting; train left foot; practise crossing; learn some new tricks..........England here we come!!!!!! Spurs have a wonder winger who scores 10-12 goals a season.
wentworth
tophobunty1882 if he got the ball fair enough, but for me it looked like Dawson didn`t touch the ball & only the player & a clear penalty. If he did then great challenge.I watched the highlights & they all said it was a penalty & i agreed.

Fanny adams - so why don't you support the scum if you are so obsessed with walnut? It's Lennon for me all day long!

@logos8

The future of football is with flexibility and intelligence on the pitch. A successful manager will need to inculcate strategic intelligence and flexibility, which requires athletic ability, but far surpasses athletic ability alone. It requires a quick and mind well rehearsed and prepared. Forwards need to intuit when to track back to take on defensive responsibilities. Midfielders and FBs need to intuit when they should move forward into attack. The two need to be interchangeable, and the trick is to read the match in its flow. Takes discipline and takes practice. Much practice on the training grounds and patience when being implemented until the team knows their interchangeable roles.

When Del Bosque sprang the 4-6-0 with Spain at Europe I was shocked until I perceived the incredible flexibility that can come with it. The 4-6-0 can transform into many other formations at the blink of an eye, but it requires skilled players who understand one another and know the requisite conditions to change what they are doing.

I believe the Spurs have the beginnings of a squad that has these kinds of players. Adebayor, as frustrating as he often is, can move into a wing or a midfield position and then back into an attacking position on the next possession. Soldado seems to be showing something of such flexibility at times. Paulinho and Erickson can move up front in an instance or move back into defense when needed. Lamela probably has this capacity, although he's been reigned in until now. Perhaps Chadli is showing moments of such ability. I thought AVB might have the nous to move us in this direction, and I believe now he has the intelligence to do so, but his personality seems to constipate his management and discourage the movement of the players. Intelligence isn't sufficient in management, one needs as well social and psychological abilities to lead. Is our Timmy the man? Who knows? He's largely an unknown as a manager, even though he's been a Spur for a long time. But the personnel we have seem to be right to a large extent to move into this sort of strategic multiplicity. May we be among the leaders of the future of the beautiful game. COYS.

Thanks Block D. Like a snake I need to shed my skin once in a while. (And some odd thing happened with my computer and it wouldn't log me in under my old name any more.) I chose a name that continued my tradition of being a fool, but brought in an aspect of Harry Hotspur Percy's alter ego from Henry IV. Sorry, can't help being like that. But thanks for welcoming me back.
Falstaff the Fool
That goes for all the other lennon knockers as well. Bet you can't name atleast 4 better right wingers in the PL than lennon? Not strikers- come-right wingers. Just purely right wingers?
neymar
Falstaff the Fool is a much nicer name than your old one TK. Glad to see you back. Always good to have some literary and intellectual references in our Vital Spurs posts. COYS.
SpuriousLife
Cider Spurs, you said you don`t care for comments suggesting Stoke were poor & then go on to say Lloris had very little to do,the backline very little to do.
That does suggest how poor Stoke were & needs to be taken into concideration,it is a factor & the fact Cheriches has been having a mare lately but looked half decent yesterday it just shows how untested they were.

Take the 3 points happily, but same Wednesday is a different kettle of fish.Done pretty well against Manchester United in recent years so New years day is a massive game for the players & Sherwood.Let`s face it beating a weakened Stoke side who don`t do well at Spurs even at full strength is one thing, man utd away is another.Yesterday was men v boys & a game of pretty poor standard,it`s the big ones that you get excited about,we`ve failed on almost every big game so far so lets see what Sherwood & the team is is all about.Or will it be same old Tottenham of this seasons pattern.
Fanny adams
By the way, Block D, for me the 4-6-0 is a metaphor for how the game will evolve; The main point is to develop a squad and a set of strategies and associated tactics that are maximally flexible and can change in real time as the team has possession and moves down the field. It makes it a close to impossible as is possible for the opponent to react in an organized way because each attack can come with slightly different personnel coming from slightly different positions on the pitch. I do believe that a manager and a team who can develop such an approach will win many cups and many championships.
Falstaff the Fool
Falstaff the Fool Same thing happened to my computer,i liked TK better, made me laugh,& your posts are more sensible, crazy ones are the best ones.

Traditionally we lose at Old Trafford, expect the same so anything better is a bonus. Would actually fancy us with a full squad, but the have problems too. I dont understand why anyone would want to come back on here hiding a previous name, they have had 1881 goes at getting rid of me.
tophobunty1882
Good to see a faster pace to our game yesterday. With all the moaning on here i read an article that puts everything into perspective, really hope this guy gets his wish, http://www.haringeyindependent.co.uk/news/10904668._/
spurfect one
neymar Most clubs don`t play wingers anymore, interchanging attackers.Lennon is one of the worst attacking players in the top 10 because his play is out dated.Lennon is old skool, because wingers no longer just hug the touch lane.,same with Defoe, really good strikers are not just there for one purpose anymore.Pleayers are more versatile these days & one trick ponies get sussed out.Nearly all attacking players who are not strikers contribute goals or assists on a regular bases. They are neither wingers or strikers, they are the balance of the 2.
lennon has not evolved into a better player by adding more to his game,he can`t even get the basics right at times.Coutinho,Hazard, mata, walcott etc even Young who is not that good has banged in a few.Old fashioned wingers are for Sunday league, not the EPL.Ronaldo is the best ever at doubling up as a striker & winger.
Fanny adams
Fanny adams....Yep!, that's right. Did not wish to post an article about Stoke's shortcomings. I don't think many, if any Prem teams have been dealt so many injuries to their first team players compared to us. Something the media choose to overlook when sticking the knife in after heavy defeats. If it makes for better reading, Stoke were not all that.....We, well we were b/oody awesome. Take it for what it is, an assured performance at home and another 3 points. Reasons to be cheerful..1,2,3.
Cider spurs
Cider spurs Good post,i hope we push on.You can only beat what`s in front of you & we did that,so well done.
IMO every team in the EPL would`ve wanted to play Stoke at home yesterday, they had nothing.
Great confidence boost for 2 tough games coming up,to beat Man Utd away has nothing else except a good performance by Spurs, however United play they are strong with or without certain players so even a point is merited.Yesterday just didn`t fell like an achievement, next game will, how you get 3 points is irrelevent,a massive scalp.
Fanny adams
Thanks Spurious Life. Fool, knobhead, I'm trying to maintain a theme here, but Falstaff clearly has a closer association with Harry Hotspur. Thanks for welcoming me back, mate.
Falstaff the Fool
Good question Fanny Adams raises about whether Lennon can adapt to the kind of flexible football I'm describing. Perhaps he is too old school, but let's give the lad an opportunity to learn new tricks. If he can't then he'll have a more limited role than if he can. But, I'm like Lennon and disagree with those who think he wastes space on the pitch. There is much positive about the lad and I think he can contribute for a while.
Falstaff the Fool
I'm not like Lennon, I like Lennon. LOL. Wish I could run like him though. Wish I were only 26 also.
Falstaff the Fool
A quick observation concerning Lamela: My impression is that he hasn't understood what the manager(s) have want him to be doing on the pitch yet. I suspect (or at least I'm hopeful) that when he sorts out his role in his own mind, we'll see a much better player. Yesterday, by the way, was the first time that Paulinho seemed to be played with certainty about what he was supposed to be doing on the pitch--what he role was. This could be the beginning of something good if these things start to jell. Whether such jellin' would be down to our Timmy won't be clear, as some of the lads might be ready after half a season to start figuring out who they are on this club. Remember this: we are one point ahead of where we were at the half way point of the season last season, so there really aren't so many reasons for pessimism on this site as I've been reading. (Yes, 5 nil and 6 nil can impose some pessimism.) But overall there are some things that can be seen a quite encouraging. The team isn't all that badly positioned as we head into the new year and the second half of the season. COYS.
Falstaff the Fool
FA....I 100% agree that United will most probably be a much tougher proposition. The Stoke win however should breed a little confidence. As some have said, was it Stoke's lacklustre display or our dominance or even a combination fo the two. taking the scoreline out of the equation (seems daft but heyho) I saw a team who looked like they were all aware and happy of their roles. Adebayor tracking back, Soldado out of the box, the interchangeable final 3rd, something that we all thought would occur at the beginning of the season, numbers in the box. All these things had nothing to do with Stoke, this was down to Tim and the team. It's the style we played, the movement and passion. Granted it'll be hard against United, but yesterday was an improvement and that has to be seen as a positive. As stated, we could have easily scored 5 against Stoke and Southampton, How many times could we say that under AVB?. Did some afterall not say that we should have been beating some teams easily when we were scraping 1-0 wins?. I am actually starting to feel more confident, not just as a result of yesterday's result, but you can just see that the problems and style AVB placed upon the players is literally lifting in front of our eyes. players look like they are enjoying the game more, a steely determination is returning. Liverpool, by Lloris' own admission the team gave up. We are now starting to look like a team again, one that will work for each other and the cause. Oh!, and half the beggars are missing.
Cider spurs
Lennon doesn't play like an old fashioned winger at all. He cuts inside a lot, exchanging passes in and around the box with our other attacking players. He does, of course also do a very good job running full backs ragged on the outside. He works hard tracking back and can be quite tough in the tackle for a little fella. When Aaron is on the ball, even if he doesn't beat a player we usually get something from him. (Plenty of free-kicks, throw-ins and corners). He gives us the perfect width and balance we need on the right. Leave the little guy alone and pick on someone your own size……… ;-)
MAN ON!
Falstaff the Fool Great goal yesterday by Lennon.Another 5 goals & 3-4 assists then has contributed, but this should be a minimum requirement of Lennon.
IMO Lennon looks like he`s giving it his all but not achieving the minimum requirement of a player in his position.
He`s not loyal, just nobody bigger wants him,no Spurs player stays when they headhunted.King only stayed because of his injuries, clubs had their eye on King but his injuries kept them away.
Nice to see lennon score, but why was it such a shock for everyone to see him do it? it should be pretty much the norm for him & to be expected. Not one assist this season? all that running looking pretty for no real purpose.
Adebayor did not help that stat yesterday.Lennon is on top dollar & imo doesn`t warrant his massive wages, doing it for charity is another thing.Being very very wealthy in a job you`re not even that good at carries no justification.IMO Lennon is over protected & over supported because people feel sorry for him,he`s got to justify those massive wages, all footballers have.To defend multi millionnaires is odd because with players like Rooney,Ronaldo,Van Persie,Suarez,Gerrard, lampard,Hazard,Giroud,Aguero,Mata,Toure,Silva,Navas,Gary Docherty etc etc etc at least they are sheer class at what they do,& a real joy to watch.

wow-the difference a win makes!...seems all is now rosy!...got to say a good performance and I may have to re-think Soldado and Ade playing together...I didn't think they'd gel but they seemed to, so let's hope ade continues to play and isn't just playing for a move. We score so many more when Andros doesn't play..;)

Cider spurs If you wanted a debate.Under Sherwood we have played West ham at home, lost 1-2,,,,Southampton away, won 2-3,,WBA at home, drew 1-1,,,Stoke at home won 3-0.

How different would those results been with AVB in charge?
IMO Sherwood has not done well or any different except the Southampton away game, but AVB was superb away anyway.
have we really improved? the next 2 games will tell us that because the last 4 i would`ve expected similar under AVB.Just feel the first 4 games for Sherwood have favoured him,yet he only had one tricky one & oddly won the hardest one.
AVB did well this season until he was up against a better team,Sherwood has that all to come,& that will be the true test of whether we are better, worse,or just gone sideways.
Fanny adams
Who won the last time Spurs played at Old Trafford? MU 2 x 3 Spurs, no? Not only can it be done, but it was done the last time we visited there. Seems to me some idiot named TK predicted it in advance. Too bad he's not on this site anymore. LOL. I'd be happy with a 1x1, though. But there's no reason we cannot win there. They haven't looked all that sharp this season. COYS.
Falstaff the Fool
Let's see a breakout match at Old Trafford by Lamela while we're at it. One goal, one assist for Lamela and one goal, one assist for Lennon. why not?
Falstaff the Fool
FA...Nothing more than jest. You nor i can predict how AVB would have faired in the matches TS has been in charge. AVB did get us winning away from home as you rightly state, for me his shortcoming at times was the rigidity of the team at times. Possession football at times did wear the oppo down, but at times it seemed to make our job harder to win the match. Players appeared scared stiff to move at times, it just looked all too awkward. one thing i would like Ts to hopefully implement is a near on same team week on week. Get some understanding between players, partnerships flourishing. this has been a problem IMO this season, the constant chopping and changing.
Cider spurs
people say how poor stoke were and that is because we beat them. the same people forget about how poor west brom are and remind what the result of that game was. your dammed if you do and dammed if you dont. 3 points is 3 points and it dosent matter who you are playing. the 3 points you get by beating stoke is worth exactly the same if we beat man utd , chelsea, liverpool, city etc.
Terry McSweeney
Cider spurs It always striked me as odd how many used the excuse of not gelling, yet AVB would constantly drop people,Soldado in & out,Defoe in & out,Dembele in & out,Sandro in & out,it was relentless.
Lamela first start Manchester City away? absolute madness.Same system different players even though it was the system that was the main issue.
Fanny adams
FA....Said it all along. Lamela and co. were going to learn nothing pulling splinters from their backsides. All i have ever asked is that the best players are played in their best position and failing this the next best altenative who plays this position is utilised. Sounds oh so simple, but we didn't seem to grasp this concept all too often pre Sherwood. Maybe this powerful 3 of Paulinho, Dembele and Sandro can be effective at the same time. System would need tweaking, but maybe it could be the all conquering Midfield many of us thought it would be.

Just back from shopping,is anyone still out there? Gotta have my final say on Sunday's game.Ade is the key to our revival.I feel we have just signed Suarez[both mad of course].Without his tireless link-up play ,holding the ball and driving at their defence ,our attack could have fizzled out to the usual goaless fiasco. He's that important.Naughton should continue at right back, and if we get Vertonghen back alongside Vlad as our centre halves,we should stop shipping goals.Probably need to sign a class left back though.

Those who still berate Lennon are thick as wet spam and know nothing about football,, he didnt get the biggest standing ovation of the season yesterday because of his goal or constant threat down the wing but because if his work rate, attitude and continuous performances for the past 8 years. Wentworth you ask for improvement, defence, tracking back, and most importantly 'not' running down the wing and booting it out for a goal kick,,, as soon as Harry came in he started cutting back, learning how to play short passes and finding players rather than just kick and run some of you muppets think is to be all and end all.. If you want more improvement tell other players to pass the ball in front of him not to feet, 7 or 8 times yesterday the ball was played behind him, had to stop, turn back, turn forward, then take on 3 players, just play it so he can run at pace straight past them. Most underrated player, why do you think we were so shi1 when he was injured, wasn't all about AVB.

Hello Cleveland ARTSPURS. The demonstrations last June in Brasil were exhilarating and expect more of the same when the WC arrives. The problem is that there is no focus on what the solutions in Brasil should be, but the entire population is fed up with corrupt politicians stealing the money needed for education, transportation, and health. By the way I thoroughly enjoyed Sunday's game and saw Lennon as MOTM. He was active and attacking all day. Created havoc and discomfort for Stoke at every turn. Enjoyed the one-two's with Paulinho and Naughton and Eriksen and the vision to make the move to show Naughton where to put the through ball. Brilliant!

After the dull performances against hull, west ham, cardiff, the performance against stoke is a reason to be excited imo because there are signs of improvement.
logos8
I would not be watching football at all if I was to keep it in my pants when my team wins 3-0 after so many poor performances and results.
logos8
THF Chris - I agree and really hope that TIM changes the style a little to fit the match and opponents. Going hung ho at Old Trafford may not be the best policy and I would like to see Capoue in there in Sandros absence and maybe just Adebayor up top on his own for this one to start with. That still leaves us with enough creativity in midfield, just a little more defensive protection. When are VERT and Kaboul back and any news on Paulinho ??
Windlespur
T.H.F. I may know nothing about football but I thought the game was about scoring and making goals and constantly trying to improve and develop one's skills. Bale had to work hard to develop his talents....he now scores with left foot, right foot and head. Lennon used to be an England international with great promise so if he has improved he should be an automatic choice for internationals. He is good but could be great Every player should be aiming higher not just happy with the status quo.

Rarely I have seen trophies won with such cynical attitude. You need to hope and believe even when you have only 10 men on the pitch against Barcelona. negativity and pessimism will kill the game and will win you only what you deserve: nothing. Yes, most of you will say it's only being realistic, but you know what ? I see underdogs doing miracles every month in every sport and it's because of hope, belief, determination, concentration and lack of negativity and pesimism. Call me naive but I watch all kind of sports from 1 January to 31 December and I do it because I love it and I enjoy it. I'll stop watching sports if I'll come to the point where I won't enjoy a 3-0 win with a solid performance.

Good article Cider on the back of a timely and encouraging performance. Good to see all of our super 7 play with 6 on the pitch at the same time. Also good to see youth in the team performing well...Fryers, Eriksen and a nice cameo from Lamela.
Talking of the young players I have one criticism of Adebayor. He is now reinstated and an experienced team member. I'd prefer it if he could control his angst with the younger lads. I keep hearing that he needs love and support....just asking he shows it also to the yougsters. Couple of times he was OTT with Fryers and Lamela IMO.
Keep up the good work Tim. If we can walk away from OT with our heads held high, whatever the result, the season is not yet lost.....not that it ever was.

logos8 Maybe the fact it was the first we actually tore a team to pieces helped your cause, but sadly the teams above us have been doing it alot more regularly & for them the norm, for us a surprise, when really it shouldn`t be.
take West Ham,beat us 0-3 & still shout about it,doesn`t happen to them & we`re rivals & they`re in the relegation scrap.
For us to beat a depleted Stoke & get hard ons is a little embarrassing, because with this squad it should be a foregone conclusion.I`m happy we won,but anything outside top 4 is failure imo,if we`re happy we can beat lower table teams then top4 we nowhere near deserve.
Top 4 is hotting up,but for me we`re way off the pace, beating Stoke changes nothing in terms of fight for top 4,doing well against manchester is what will make me stand up & say "WOW we`re in the mix".
We deserve to be 7th,next 4-5 games we tell us more, that we do deserve to be higher, but imo too many of our players are not pulling their weight.
Fanny adams
Not rocket science - but shows how it is ALWAYS best to play players in their natural positions. naughton a different level at right back and Fryers is young, but better left back than a Naughton there. Hope that continues.
Windlespur
fanny - you may be right, but ever heard of stepping stones, winning mentality, building confidence. A 3-0 home win ( where we normally struggle to break teams down) is a massive Stepping stone. Take the positives and at least we go into a very tough match with some confidence . COYS

wentworth +1.But his post was so ill advised it wasn`t worth responding. He scores one goal in nearly a year & it`s the first evidence that fans of Lennon have to back up their support for him.The evidence should be there at least every other game, not one in 10.People feel sorry for him because he`s small & innocent looking, but he`s a multi millionnaire who just needs to do what he`s paid to do.
His stats may not tell the whole story, but ffs they`re not even average stats.
Fanny adams
Windlespur I agree, just don`t want to get carried away as i`ve seen Spurs do this almost every season in God knows how long.
But i respect the optimism from Logos8,but been bitten by Spurs optimism far too many times before.Even Glen Hoddle went on a roll & then.......well the usual,Ramos won the cup then......well the usual,Harry had 3rd in his hands then .......well the usual....Jol had 4th in his hands......well the usual followed......AVB had our biggest ever points tally & a win % over 50%....then the collapse again....

That`s why i want cappello or van Gaal, club winners, not just club managers who have good honeymoon periods. And club managers who don`t put up with average like Defoe ,Lennon,Dawson,Holtby,Siggy,Walker, & co.
Groundhog day at Spurs, same $hit different season. It can`t carry on.
Fanny adams
Fanny. not sure a 67 year old Capello or 62 year old Van Gaal are the answers. to do it properly you have to start from the bottom by improving the youth structure and youth scouting network and instill a philosophy from the 1st team down to the kids. your 2 candidates will not be healthy/living to see a proper job through.
spurs-stelios
spurs-stelios Real Madrid went around 6 years without winning a trophy until Cappello took charge, they haven`t looked back.
Spurs just need that manager to get the ball rolling, all our managers in the last 20 years have had great honeymoon periods then the collapse begins.Terry Venables got us 3rd back in around 1991 1992,Gerry francis had us unbeaten for months but then it went fubar.
Sherwood may have a honeymoon period but then same old same old.Spurs are crying out for a manager who is the real deal, not this honeymoon period like you have when you first meet a bird & you`re at it like rabbits.
Chelsea brought back Mourinho because they learnt from this,Pellegrini is the real deal,Rodgers looking good,Wenger & ferguson the top 2 best managers the EPL has ever had. These guys don`t have honeymoon periods then collapse,Benitez was great at Liverpool for 5 years before it went wrong, but 5 years is a great period, then went to Chelsea & won them the Europa cup, sublime CV.
Spurs need the real deal because IMO,Levy is running out of time.

This debate about Lennon. Forget stats. Whenever he has been injured we haven't been the same. Often he puts crosses in and the strikers don't anticipate them and their movement is poor. This has happened many times over the years. Yes his crossing has not always been great but there are many times he does cross and no one gets on the end of it, lets face it our strikers for a few years have been woeful, so not all lennon's fault that he hasn't got assists. I think we should go on whether we have been better with him in the side and I say overall yes we are better with him in the side.

Another point, he does get back well compared to some wingers, even Bale was not as good at his defensive duties as Lennon and he also incites players towards him because of his threat which creates space for others.

I agree his scoring is poor and he doesn't shoot enough, but overall he is a good PL player and I would expect Lamela to take his place once he is bedded in and matured. Different kind of player and we will lose that width but he seems to prefer the right side, unless of course he develops into a central player either as a striker or a player behind the striker. However, Lamela is still settling and learning about the game and needs time and at the moment Lennon is ahead of any other player for that RW at the moment but I can see a couple more seasons and things will change, he isn't getting younger but not yet imo. If lamela plays a different position then I see no reason why Lennon should lose that RW spot, I don't think any one is a threat other than Lamela at the moment and then that will much depend on lamela progress and whether he will be seen as a right side and in a formation of 4 4 2 I don't even think Lamela will get in over lennon, he is not a winger, but if new manager plays a 4 3 3 then I think lamela will push Lennon and be more suited to that formation than Lennon is, so we will see, but for now as a 4 4 2 Lennon is our best RW player.
WorldPeace
Fanny Adams I'm right behind you on this one mate. I can't get all excited about us only scoring 3 goals against a severely depleted stoke side who when they were stronger got hammered 5 - 0 by West Brom of all teams, so I say as you, wait until we play the top teams and see how we do against THEM before we start shouting about how great we are playing. The display was OK but in front of goals was abysmal. If that is all we can put past a second string 'keeper then we need better strikers. Also for all those who say it doesn't matter who scores, OF COURSE IT DOES, if our mid field has to be in and around the box all the time to try and salvage the game from our non scoring strikers that means they are having to leave the centre wide open and any good team like manure will slaughter us through the centre because all our players will be up field trying to score. Hammer manure on Wednesday and I will be impressed, but STOKE??? no way. It is only what we should be doing against teams of that lowly calibre, apart from scoring a lot more against them..
chrishove123
chrishove123 Agree with your post but wasn`t it Newcastle?
Fanny adams
Potentially I think we have problems with the squad balance and just cannot see how we will fit all the international players in especially with this 4 4 2 formation. That leaves 4 spots in the middle for how many players, Paulinho, Capoue, Dembele, SAndro, Lennon, Townsend, Chadli, Lamela, Siggy, Holtby, Eriksen, that's eleven players, not going to work, players are going to get frustrated, WC year. 4 4 2 changes everything, it also suggests we will need another striker imo.

With Sherwood as well he seems keen to bring in some youngsters, just don't see how he is going to keep all the players happy especially in the middle. Said it in the summer, we were over loaded in the middle and now we have changed formation we are more overloaded, unless Sherwood is going to change formation according to who we play and not always play two out and out strikers, then who will he drop, Ade or Soldado?.

The other thing to consider is if Levy will bring in another manager. If paper talk is true and Levy has spoken to the Holland manager, wouldn't surprise me then you could think that the Holland manager may have said to levy who he would like to keep at the club, make sure the players that are at the club that he rates will still be there next summer, which would mean keeping them happy and making sure sherwood does that without letting on that a handshake deal has been done with the Holland manager, wouldn't surprise me with Levy. You can imagine it can't you. Sherwood doesn't rate Capoue for instant and the holland manager has already said to Levy that Capoue is one of the players he wants Levy to keep, Sherwood tries to let him go, convince Levy and levy says no, but can;t give a reason, Sherwood gets frustrated and doesn;t play him, Capoue gets fed up and the drama begins. I just think if Levy has no intention of keeping Sherwood and a deal has secretly been done for the Holland manager this could potentially cause problems with Sherwood.

Still as I see it, with the current 4 4 2 formation Sherwood is going to have his job cut out to keep all those players happy. Wouldn't surprise me if we don't see a couple sold or loaned from that midfield area, Siggy, Holtby spring to mind.
WorldPeace
Well, if we continue building from this foundation, then no reason why some (if not all) of the magnificent 7 become the core of the team. I really hope Ade maintains his interest this time round. His presence alone has added that extra bite to our play.

One thing that I have noticed specifically under TS is that when advancing, our short, quick passing is improving. Admittedly, we still get it wrong at time, the players are beginning to gain some understanding. Can't wait for everything to fall in to place!

Just off topic, did any one see Lukaku's finish for Everton. What a move and great finish!
Critical_Spur
AND....my comment to those that keep saying how poor Stoke were....

Well, in EL ere apparently playing against 1st division teams. We made them look good! We struggled to play anything like how we played against Stoke. So credit where credit's due. COYS!
Critical_Spur
chrishovel123-glad your not getting carried away, neither am I. last season Defoe and Ade couldn't score and we had to rely on Bale. Now Ade scored on his return to the team, doesn't he always when he has a point to prove, but Soldado doesn't look like scoring and it is early days re Ade, will he continue playing well for the rest of the season, may be as his pay is cut when City stops paying him so he may well play well and haggle for a improved contract from us only to be rubbish next season. Still I am not getting carried away by Ade performances yet anyway and Soldado I just cannot take to him. Sometimes I think I am watching a different match when people say Soldado played well he is getting into the area. I saw him several times play a short pass around the area, only to stay out of the area, once even even started moving backward away from the area, he didn't get into the area, he should be busting a gut to get into the area when he has made the pass on the edge of the area, he is our main front line striker. IMO he shed his responsibility, and when he did get into the area and got a chance he fluffed it.

There is something about him I cannot take to and I think defoe has shot it, and Ade imo is still not to be trusted so I am not getting carried away at putting 3 past a very poor stoke side.

However, i will give credit were it is due and imo the football has been more entertaining and more open but that doesn't mean success over the course of the season. I will take each game, one at a time and see how we fair against, Utd, Arsenal, City, Chelsea, Everton, liverpool second time round.
WorldPeace
Final point, if Sherwoods approach is not successful over the course of the season I do think it will do some good. I think his attacking football will help the players settle and get to know each other and build confidence as they are allowed to express themselves, but whether the openness and the formation will be effective enough over the season and to beat stronger sides I don't know. Still if it gets the players settled to the PL and more relaxed then that can built upon next season.
WorldPeace
4 4 2 means eleven players for the 4 midfield spots, hmmm - that's a whole team, how can we keep all of them happy.
WorldPeace
WorldPeace, IMO, you make a very valid point re making players, relax, express and enjoy themselves. Apparently those were the sort of words uttered to Ade. It wouldn't surprise me if similar encouragement was given to Pauly y'day. I know that used to be 'arry's trait, but as long as that is the ONLY similarity between the two, I'd be happy!!.

I get some of the comments relating to not getting too carried away with mauling Stoke. Thing being I heard it all before when we played United. Poor team, weak this season, not all that. This was days after they had thumped Bundesliga 2nd placed team 5-0. The current league champions, and still a 2-2 draw was deemed just o.k. If we beat United this week, still the doom mongers will stir from their hibernation. Winning any game should never be taken as a gimme, and every 3 points gained with a sense of satisfaction. I,m sure we are all aware of how every last point is vital, last season showed us this.
Cider spurs
Why is it when we play a team that we beat convincingly, there is a problem with the opponent or find an excuse for winning? If the opponent can't field their strongest 11 why should we care? If they are off the boil then good! We can only beat what's in front of us. So do teams like Utd, City, Chelsea moan if they beat an under strength opponent? Of course not. It's 3 points up for grabs. Let's stop feeling sorry for ourselves or make excuses for winning. Teams who want to win don't think this way. COYS!

Paulinho is out for 4 weeks it has been confirmed. Our luck with injuries is shocking, we might have a chance of a good season with everyone fit, lady luck hates us. Tough month coming up aswell ***** it. That's now Vertonghen, Kaboul, Sandro, Townsend, Paulinho and Defoe. Could any other clubs cope with a injury list like that.
WizYid
Fanny. Adams - I see you are persistent with your cries of our players being average. You name defoe, lennon, dawson, holtby, siggy, walker & co. I'm just curious, by "co" do you also mean naughton, rose, fryers, capoue, chadli, lamela, soldado? Because that right there is a lot of talent that needs to be shipped out before fans like yourself will be satisfied. Tell me how do you get it right to idolise another clubs players (eg. Walnut) but you claim to support another club (spurs) and you berate the contribution of that clubs players (eg. Lennon)? Wouldn't it be less painful for you to find the club which has the most players which you like and start supporting that club? Just seems logical to me and no one will hold it against you. You can even change your user name to 'Big Gunner' or 'Tony Adams' or how about 'Walnut's Fanny'.

If Lennon is so bad why has no one ever replaced him at spurs. People say Defoe doesn't do it against big clubs, last season Lennon scored the winners against Arsenal and Liverpool, and set up the last minute assist equaliser v Utd... You can't compare him to World Record Fee Garth Bale, no he's not as good as Ronaldo, Messi, Suarez, Van Persie or Bale but he's much much better than chadli, siggy, eriksen, holtby, lamela, list goes on..

Windless it'll be very interesting to see what sherwood does do, AVB got a lot wrong in the end but before that he done really well away to top teams so you kinda hopes a little bit of that.. Wizyid - I'm sure adam was brought on with the instruction to stop our most influential player of the match (pauli). Well he succeeded and now we face the. Mancs at OT without him. I must agree with you in that over the years we have been crippled with injuries to our best players which at times appeared to be beyond normal. For instance, what are the odds that we would we have finished 4th last season had sandro not missed almost the entire season through injury?

Lennon works hard, defends well, wins us a lot of throw ins etc, makes a lot of key passes !! He has served us well in his years here, cant believe some people on here are moaning about him :/
LOcE1980
I couldn't stop thinking that all throughout the summer neymar, im certain if Sandro stayed fit we'd probably of finished 3rd, all if's and but's but we have to be the unluckiest team in the league with injuries and ours seem to fall at the worst time to. Charlie Adam is a (unt, most hated thug in the league for me. And although Sandro is fighting hard i unfortunately still dont see the player before the injury and it's not that often you ever do again after such a injury. WorldPeace, I have read that Ade is going to be offered a new or better contract with us if he plays as he should. IF that is true then it just goes to prove what a mercenary he is and that he is just playing to get the contract (yet again). My worry is that when he gets it, because he will make damned sure he does, he will revert back to the Ade we had under AVB. AS for Adam I hope he ends his career in his next game. This is the only time I have felt this way about any player, but he is nothing but a thug who would have been at home during the 70s trying to break George Best's legs with the rest of the thugs who "played" back then.
chrishove123
The only thing that shocks me is everyone's surprise at Charlie Adam. He's always been nothing more that an old man bashing ***** head fat scottish ****. It's about time Tottenham took action over it. They should've done over the last Bale incident amid claims it was pre-meditated. All because he was dribbling about getting his fatty, non-footballing mind and body to N17. Some chance. I liked Harry but jeez did he link us with some top quality scat.

WizYid - atleast we have options to cover for the loss of paulinho, but sadly none as good as him (capoue, holtby, siggy, bentaleb).

Spot on about lennon LOcE1980 - along with defoe he is currently our longest serving player and has given excellent service to the club. 5 different managers has rated him the best player in his position. They couldn't all be wrong could they? Only cost 1 million and no question that he has been value for money. I would say that over the last 20 or so years, lennon has easily been in the top 3 of best value for money signings. Stats and 'facts' can be very misleading. For instance, he provided the cross that led to the penalty against palace. Without that cross we would not have won the game but no stat credits him with anything. So much for stats. It is well known 'fact' that the last time we had a world class striker at the lane was way back in 2008. For the past 5 years azza has been providing crosses to misfiring strikers - not the best way to boost your assist ratings. This also explains the 'fact' that his final ball is sub standard - it will be if you have strikers of the calibre of crouch, defoe, pav, bent, saha, etc to aim at. I had to lol when I read somewhere in this thread that people only like lennon because he is small and they feel sorry for him! What a load of bullcrap! The PL is the toughest league in the world. Managers can only survive if their results add up. No manager will pick a player that is not going to benefit the team. Lennon has been picked by 5 different managers over the past 9 years. The reason is simple: there isn't a left back in england than can cope with him. He tormented and tortured them all. Amazingly I hear talk of 'one trick pony'. Must be referring to his speed. Better to have THAT one explosive trick that works everytime than to be jack of all trades and master of none (remember david bentley who cost 15 times what we paid for lennon...15 times!). Now we have a fella from argentina who is struggling to fit in and he cost 25 times more. Over the years, various players were brought in to replace our little lightning bolt. It says a lot for his character and talent that he is still standing, still flying, still giving his best, still tormenting defenders and still #1 on the right wing. Long will it continue. Thankfully we have a qualified manager picking the teams.

I thought we put in a decent performance against a poor side, something we have struggled to do at home all season. Shame about the Paulinho injury, him and Dembele played their best game together!! COYS

One point on ade and his haggling a new contract. Levy is not stupid, he will have noted ade's behavior over last 10 months or so.. u can be sure there will be clauses in the new contract based on his playing stats, and attendance at training and club commitments, attitude... No more missing planes, or disappearing acts..
Block D Spurs
Well, here we are again. Spurs on the cusp of stringing a few performances together, one of our players has arguably his best game in a Spurs shirt, talk of an understanding in MF, and boom. Injured Adam style. By my reckoning that is now 19 out of our 25 man squad who have been injured this season. half a season, 19. Some have obviously been long and IMO detrimental to the performance. This reason my friends is why i give no mention to us beating weaker or so called weaker should i say teams. Nowhere has it been mentioned by media to my knowledge about the level of our injuries this season. All over the press when it's Aguero or RVP. One player for them, we've had numerous at the same time.

Against Stoke, in all honesty you could argue that our whole backline was second string (Kaboul ahead of Daws for me). Just one example of the crippling effects injuries have dealt us this season.
,br>Friedel, Walker, Dawson, Lamela, Siggy and Soldado. I think that's the only lads who have remained injury free. I may be wrong with this. the whole final 3rd has only seen Lamela (few starts) Siggy and Soldado injury free, Central Midfield everyone has been injured. The backline constantly changing as a result of injuries. Some may look at this as another excuse, some will argue that's why we have a good deep squad. My point being, most of the squad has been injured at different times and differing lengths, we've not been able to field the same team all too often with only the odd squad player coming in to cover. On this basis why the heck should we not be vocal and proud of our teams performance regardless of whom we play. For all we've endured and looking at the injuries and management changes, beating Stoke was a b/oody grand effort. Please try and bear this in mind when informing us that beating a so called poor Stoke team is not really a pointer of a good performance. After all we are enduring it is more than a good performance, we showed character and will have to do so for the rest of the season no doubt. Comments relating to a weakened Hull side when we played them, same with Stoke, it beggars belief that i don't hear it mentioned all too often about our own team. Why???.
Cider spurs
Exactly Cider - not only this season, but for a long time now, we have had an injury jinx that is way out of the normal. Call it paranormal or super unnatural or whatever you like, but its as if we are cursed by some unexplainable force which prevents us from building any sort of title challenging momentum. As if that is not enough then you get rotten no good thugs like adam who take it on themselves to go out intentionally to just make sure he adds his little bit of special treatment to the pot. If only the beast was there to sort him out. Looking at it in this way, our team has done us proud under the circumstances and we should get behind them instead of nitpicking and picking on players (lennon, siggy, walker, dawson, chiriches, holtby, chadli, soldado, defoe, lamela, etc). Get behind the team and support. We are all human and make mistakes. Stop comparing our attackers to GB. Spurs will never have someone of that ability again, he was a freak of nature. Get behind the boys and support them all. As long as they wear that white jersey they need our support. Now let's phuck up the mancs and the scum with a half fit team with mads battle cry at full voice; "WIN, WIN, WiIN!!!"
neymar
neymar....Spot on. All things considered we have actually battled through the 1st half of this season admirably IMO. Numerous injuries, 7 new signings and a manager change. Me personally, i think one of these elements alone has the potential to derail a season. Spurs being Spurs, we havew to deal with all three. Still, i'm sure these factors can be ignored when results go against. We must not be too positive, afterall, that would never do. What d'ya mean we only got 100 points.....crap!!!....We should have got 101. Delusional grandeur?, or an ignorance from whence we came?. We are doing alright all things considered. All IMO of course. If we lose to Utd we'll most probably be reminded they were there for the taking. RVP was missing. Let's ignore the fact half our team was/has been. Some shout Lilywhite tinted glasses.....I shout Ignorance.

on the Lennon walcott issue I see its raised again here. as a pure wide right player i would take Lennon every day of every week, if that is how both are told to play. Walcott simply cant do what Lennon can do in that role, Lennon is better. Now in a free role Walcott becomes a bigger threat, better player and is a VERY good finisher. I would take Walcott in a free role. Now having said that I don't believe like some on here do that Lennon cant play well in a free role and to be fair to him i would like to see him play a few games that way to see if he could equal Walcott that way.

They're very Everton in their slowing the game down. At 0-0 with their speedy squad, they should keep the tempo up, like Fergie used to. At 1 up you can slow it down a bit, but you lose maintaining pressure needed at 0-0. At Everton you can understand to a point but with their squad... It gave us chances to recoup, the 3 or 4 times they slowed in 1sr half. As we used to give teams recouperation times under AVB. Timmy ******** Sherwood! Thought AVB would keep 1 up on him here but no chance! Best of both worlds. Kane was great when he came on as he was against Hull, was it? Should've featured this season, especially with no Ade about.
