Short Term Solutions

Short Term Solutions

There seems a pretty good chance that there will be very little activity from Tottenham in this months transfer window, and following on from such a hectic and destabilising summer, that seems sensible. Despite adding seven new and bringing back two loanees in Townsend and Rose, we still find ourselves short in a couple of areas, as the squad is frustratingly ravaged by injuries to key players, as as is soften the case, injuries seem to come in positional groups, as you lose both left backs, two of four centre backs or 3 of four central midfielders. Tomorrow, we may even find ourselves without two of our three strikers, should Adebayor miss out along with Defoe.

These things happen, and it isn't only at WHL. If we recall Man Utd, having to play Fletcher and Carrick together at centre half for a couple of games, after losing all of their other players for that position. These things clearly cannot be legislated for, as you can only play the percentages, and somehow, a weakness will always find you out, whether you are the richest or poorest club in the game.

Sp far Tim Sherwood has done well and rightly received praise for playing the likes of Bentaleb, Fryers and Kane in his short time in charge, and not only have they not looked out of place, but they have looked comfortable and may feel be the sensible route to take in the development of the team over time. Problem is that when still competing on three fronts, all squads get stretched to their limits and it may not be wise to over play the kids, but just let then find their feet at a more measured pace, as opposed to pushing them too early and damaging them for the longer term.

Of course Spurs have and will allays be linked with a few big money moves, whether they have any truth in them or not. Of course will would be interested in a player like Luke Shaw to cover the left back berth, but so would every other side that could afford him. We know that United, Chelsea and Liverpool are all desperate for a left back, so we are in some pretty big company. The same will apply to many others, but as Sherwood has stated, we already have a big squad and unless that new player can improve the best XI, are we wise to commit to long term expense, when we perhaps have a youngster emerging or a player injured, but soon to return?

If we consider we have the likes of Carroll, Livermore, Pritchard, Cabellos and many more on loan or doing well in the development squads, it is obvious that bringing in new faces, will probably force them out or at the very least, stunt their development. No disrespect to a player like Capoue, but is he really that much better than Livermore or Tom Huddlestone for example, whilst players like Carroll or Pritchard have huge potential and perhaps just need the chance to prove it.

With that in mind, loans or short term solutions may well be the sensible route to take. We also have to consider that we are a relatively young squad and having a couple of elder players amongst the youth, will actually hold us in good stead. This was something Harry Redknapp did with the likes of Gallas, Friedel and even Ryan Nelsen, and in truth it worked quite well. Is this a potential happening with Sherwood, who of course worked well with harry and perhaps follows some of his ideas.

We have heard several rumours that Dimitar Berbatov could be looking to leave Fulham and is a player of huge quality and has ability to play as the main or No10 striking roles, as does Juve's Mirko Vucinic, who may or may not be available, depending on who you listen to. Both have bags of experience and could save Emmanuel Adebayor some workload, and perhaps allow Harry Kane to spend half a season away, playing games and gaining experience. QPR perhaps?

Defensively, I do worry about Younes Kaboul and whether he will ever be fit to play regular football again, whilst he has also entered his final six months of his contract with us. Can Levy gamble on another deal, when he is so troubled by injury? Perhaps a short term arrangement, but what is to stop someone like PSG, Monaco or anyone else offering him the security of a longer contract, with the acceptance that he may well be brilliant or he may be a crock. Yesterday Joleon Lescott was mentioned as a possible loan signing and though he isn't one to excite the fans, he is a very good player, who knows the Prem and has the versatility to play CB or LB, making Jan Vertonghen's position more stable, whilst also allowing him to be rested without too much disruption.

I assume the fact we have allowed BAE to play in the FA Cup this weekend, but haven't allowed Tom Carroll to do the same, might indicate that Benny's time with us has ended, but what of TC? Does this mean we will bring him back or is there a Premiership move on the horizon? Personally, I hope he stays on loan somewhere, as long as he gets games, over simply being one of our squad. Seeing him play 20 games as opposed to the occasional one with us, and becoming frustrated or stagnate.

For a relatively small outlay and short term commitment, we might just be able to strengthen our squad, add experience, whilst either allowing the kids to grow slowly or perhaps spend time away. We don't of course know what Sherwood and Baldini intend to do with the current squad and perhaps there are one or two that don't fit into Tim's plans and might well be better served moving on. We will hopefully lose Gomes to allow for another wage to replace it, but though you don't see too many obvious weak links, a player like Defoe leaving and being replaced by either Berbatov or Vucinic, might actually offer better balance and quality to what is already a very good squad...

Yes to Lesscott offers simple solution to LB and CB issues and can play with all the CB we have. Yes to Another forward as Defoe is off who that is I don't know not sure Vucinic is the answer but the only other shout has been Shane Long.....Is there a better fit out there than those two start searching your scouting net works.

I would love to see Carroll back. It would be interesting to see what Tim can get from him. Looks like BAE is staying with QPR for the time being…….. Unless we can sign someone top-notch, I'm happy with our present squad until the seasons end.

There is a clear problem at centre half, Kaboul is essentially a passenger. I don't see how we can sort this out before the end of the season so a loan deal for Lescott might work well. He will be desperate to try and force his way into the world cup squad so I don't think there will be any lack of commitment.

Lescott would be a good addition to the squad + another striker to cover Defoe leaving. I would leave TC on loan, to continue his progress, as we have too many mid-fielders atm, so he wouldn't get much playing time. Apart from that it's a matter of getting, and keeping, everybody fit. Wait until the summer to see if TS has earned his 18 months or we get another manager, if he hasn't, before we buy any more players.

I think Lescott would be a good bit of business, especially on loan. It looks likes Jan is out for at least another month or so that only leaves us with Daws and Vlad. Sorry but we cant count Kaboul, as sad as it is he can manage maybe a game or two then breaks down. Lescott would be perfect until the end of the season. Used to the premiership and hungry to play. I can’t see anything else happening unless Defoe goes, and even then cant really see who we would bring in.

I've said it before but I really don't think there should be a JTW. It can cause disruption as much as it can be beneficial. After all we have plenty of squad players not getting much game time as it is. Lamela being a good example. There's also no guarantee that anyone coming in will hit the ground running and that's really what's needed…….. Modric on loan, Geofspurs?

As I've said previously, I don't think we need anybody unless they return from loan spells. We are a bit unlucky with injuries at the moment, but that will improve. I'd like to know what Levy's thinking is; if he plans on bringing in a new manager at the end of the season, or it happens despite his plans, then the new man should be there to select the players he wants. I know Sherwood has a contract for 18 months, but what does that mean?! We seem to be doing pretty well now with a depleted squad and a change in style. It should only get better (I think/hope). We have enough players to try and work out without adding more. But then ... I can think of some arguments to strengthen a bit, I suppose.

Lescott would be a wonderful deal if we can get it done quickly, not sure we'll be able to get a striker of the quality we need in Jan so maybe a loan again is the answer for cover.

Given that Kaboul may well have played his last game for us then a CB makes sense as we need one more long term anyway. Regarding strikers why not give Lamela a go? He played second striker for Roma. He needs to be given a run of games to see if he can actually cut it or not.

I'm not sure Levy would have Berbs back but at £2m it's a steal. He is different class to some of the others we needn't have brought back. I agree with others who've mentioned Berbs could play till he's late 30's, but I think I can also remember him saying he didn't want to play too long past 30. Years ago he said it.

CB's only a problem because LB was....verts, Daws, Vlad and Kaboul would normally be enough for two positions but the failure to land a LB meant running Verts into the ground...so lescott can play both positions is prob the best we can hope for...oh the days when we thought we had money and could buy a player like coentrao....

I am a little concerned about our striker situation. I do think Soldado is playing very well but, of course, he needs to start scoring. Ade, apart from the WBA game has been fantastic but I am worried that he'll not keep it up. Not for the obvious reasons but because of a lack of match-time. I can see him being knackered before long. (Not Shane)! Kane is just back from injury and, I know some will disagree, but I thought he looked good coming on at OT. Who knows what when it comes to Defoe? (I would like him to stay until the end of the season). All said, I'd rather not have us rely on midfielders alone to score our goals, even though I'm certain that Eriksen will chip in with a few more and others are just as capable. COYS!

Berba and Ade are 2 very different strikers. Ade's workrate in the last few games has been immense, Berba will not run the channels like Ade but has better technique. TBH i would rather we promote Kane until the end of the season and sign a long term hungry striker. Lescott makes perfect sense. If Defoe goes, and I hope he does by the way, I'd like to see Lamela playing at the #10 slot at times. Something tells me we haven't seen him used properly yet. He's a good player waiting to happen, I suspect. Soldado, Adebayor, and Lamela could make a decent rotation up front, I think, if Lamela gets settled in. An interesting front 3 in a possible 4-3-3. (I know, I'm supposed to support only a 4-6-0, but give me some leeway, lads, and a 4-3-3 is only a variant of a 4-6-0. he he.)

Lesscott would be a great addition to our squad for the remainder of the season and on loan he'd definitely represent value for money which after the summer Levy will be very keen on.

If Tim is ready to do some proper business then a first class striker is needed for the long term. Playing under AVB we played one up top so with Soldado, Ade, Defoe and even Kane we had one playing, one sub and two reserved meaning we had plenty of cover. Playing two up top means we'll suffer a lot more striker injuries and considering Defoe and Ade recent problems it is an area we are weak, I hate the thought of Chadli starting next to Soldado, or even Kane for that matter. As Greaves pointed out having Ade and Berbatov in the same squad would be suicide although if you dropped Soldado to sub/Europa games Ade and Dim could be a pretty potent strike force.

Looking at the medium to long term Adebayor is not a player you want in your team. You want players that give 100% commitment at least 99% of the time, you don't want players that give 110% commitment 50% of the time. You don't want a player that gives 110% because he wants to prove a manager wrong or is playing against a former side (Arsenal last season, 2-0 up and gets himself sent off for a mindless tackle). The man has never grown up, has fallen out with probably every manager he's played for. We need to look beyond him for the future, get rid end of the season. COYS.

Keep Adebayor sweet until the summer then get rid,his next mood swing is always just around the corner. He`s great when he has a point to prove, but there`s something wrong with a player who only plays his best in these situations. If only he could just play his best because that`s his job,his occupation & his responsibility to respect the ones who pay his wages. The honouring of contracts has to work both ways.
