The Report: Swansea vs. Spurs

WOW!...Anoher 3 points!

Having made the trip along the M4 corridor, it was once again time for Tottenham Hotspur to face Swansea. With the Winter sun licking the moisture laden turf at the Liberty stadium, both sets of fans were eagerly awaiting what might be. Both desperate for wins, but both for different reasons. A win for Spurs would see us level with a 4th placed Liverpool on points, a Swansea win would see them moving a little bit further away from the relegation scrap that is now happily looking for entrants. Swansea are perilously close. Players picked, talked the talk, formed the formations. The battle commences.

Now, let's not be fooled here, Swansea are a very smart passing side. They play possession football and are very comfortable on the ball and like to get it down and play. Spurs under Sherwood's tenure have played 4-4-2, although not a rigid formation. Against Swansea, Sherwood decided to show Swansea some respect and the fact that they are very adept at passing right through teams in Midfield. We lined up in a 4-5-1, 4-2-3-1, 4-3-3 take your pick. Soldado dropped, Chadli in, Bentaleb retained. Let's look at performances and the game.

I'll start with a little negativity if I may. With Tim adding a player in Midfield, I thought it was to help even things out. First 25 minutes we were not that great. We seemed lacklustre, and Midfield was far too easily by-passed. We seemed very lethargic and Swansea dominated us. That said, we did keep them to efforts from distance a fiercly struck shot from Bony that hit the bar, and a fizzer from Shelvey which was smartly saved. Add to this Lloris' awareness to dart from his line, save and release the ball all in one move, before his momentum carried him out of the area with ball still in hand, and apart from their goal that was about their lot.

Lloris pulled of some fine saves. Well played. Walker, again missing in action at times, but he had a decent enough game, and as usual, made himself available going forward. Got one great tackle in to prevent a scoring opportunity. Daws, still seems to get sucked in high up the pitch too often, if you're going in, you've got to win it. Chiriches, he too goes in, but he has a habit of winning the ball, he is looking better and better each match. His reading of the game is excellent and he often realises where the danger might just be about to come from and positions himself accordingly. Brave player also, Bony gave his face a right wallop, no fuss, quick wipe with the 'magic sponge' on we go. Not sure about the RW surge later in the game. Funny to watch, not sure if required. Well done Vlad. Rose, well I'm none to sure at the moment. His positioning at times made Walker look World class. He almost appeared petulant to me. He did burst forward and beat a couple of players once, only to ballon the ball into row Z with his shot. The ball in row Z i like, it shows consitency. No Paulinho or Townsend, someone's got to do it. He did also set up Ade for the 3rd goal after dembele minutes earlier had chose not to. Not his best game, however, he's been out a while.

Midfield leads us to Bentaleb, and the debate that goes with it. For me, apart from one weak tackle attempt, which he obviously lost, and a poor pass out Left, I thought he had a good game, did everything that was asked of him and did it well. He plays it simple, but keeps the ball moving. I'll admit that his inclusion made me worry about being overrun in Midfield, it could be argued that 1st 25 minutes we were. Would've Capoue done better? I don't know, but I am warming to him and can see why he is included. He keeps it simple, and retains possession. He did play one delicious ball through, but to whom has eluded me. Well played young man. Dembele, well I didn't see much of him 1st half, he was putting himself about, but only later did we see the surging runs forward, one was to beat a few and fluff his lines on a shot, the other was to race clear and shoot wide of the Left post when Ade was available to slot home.

Two goals up maybe, team game Moose, team game. Chadli, sorry mate, I can't really offer much. One shot at keeper, one poor cross. Never really got going. Lennon, does what he does, keeps running up and down. Put's the Left back on the back foot. Early doors, Ade could've played him in, and vice versa. I thought Lennon would have had the beating of Davies, but he still seems to pass the ball back all too often these days when faced up one vs one. Yes he'll run at a LB to get in behind, but when stood still one vs one he never entertains a race near the edge of the box. I'd like to see him do that more again as he used too. All in all a solid performance from Azza' with a nice little roll back for Eriksen to cross for the opener.

Well, like many, i've saved the best til' last. Eriksen and Adebayor. Eriksen, you beauty!. What a talent, I knew it a couple of years back, many coaches in Europe knew it. But he's our's. What intelligence for one so young, he knows exactly what he's going to do before he even recieves the ball. He never rushes, but considers his move, the ramifications of his pass, whether the short easy option is better or to risk the sublime. What a cross, what a turn on the edge of the box. What a performance. Really starting to find his feet in the prem. Excellent, and needs to be on the team sheet weekly. Ade, what a pleasure to witness yet, another outstanding performance. Passion, power, dare I say enjoyment. We have a match winner in Ade, we just need to keep the love affair going. It's been great to see him holding the ball up, involving others, scoring. Generally being a tough opponent to face. He's currently playing like he cares, we look so much better as a team with him in it when this is the case. Another MOTM performance, although this time I'm splitting it between Ade and Eriksen. Both were excellent.

Seemed a strange match, Swansea actually reminded me of AVB and the way we used to play, and all that went with it. Swansea were having most of the possession in first 25 minutes, but were only getting shots off from distance. 35 minutes elapse and BOOM!, we score. Kind of sounds familiar doesn't it?. Crossing again was poor (Eriksen aside) Walker so poor, he now looks to play it in off the opposing defence other than pull it back to the un-marked Ade on the penalty spot. Clever. Goals they say, change games. Our opener certainly helped, but even in the opening exchanges we were not totally out of it. I could see that actually it was the final 3rd and the final ball that was struggling. For Swansea's dominant opening half hour, with a little bit of a better pass by either Lennon or Ade, either would have been through on goal with only the goalie to beat. We were in a better position to breach the defence, just couldn't find the pass. Swansea were shooting from range.

All in all a very good performance, room for improvement of course, but a win to be enjoyed. Yet again I could be sat here writing about us scoring 5 goals. Couple of better crosses, Dembele pass to Ade, etc, etc. We played well, let's enjoy it. Elements are improving, and we have some very good players to return. 29th minute.. we actually had a throw in and found a team mate. now that's improvement at it's best.

Records were broken, first time since 1960/61 season I believe, that we have won 5 away games on the bounce. By all accounts, Sherwood now has the best league start points wise in the history of Tottenham. So there we have it, as the sun recedes and darkness now cascades across the Liberty stadium, supporters from near and far start the journey home. Some unhappy with all that they have bore witness to, and more so, where it may lead. Spurs fans head home, safe in the knowledge we have no date with relegation, more a design on top 4 and all that it brings. Well played Tim, good call. Well done team, 3 points. thoroughly entertaining match.

Let me be the first to congratulate Tim on excellent Team Management and tactics...
Mix26
Performed really well after a slow start, getting back key players from injury should give us the push for 10 more wins in the league and better results against teams around us to really give us a shout for 4th place in May!! COYS
WestStandEnclosure
I do wonder with Ade whether its the fact that AVB froze him out that has fired him up, given him something to prove. Whatever the reason Tim seems to have found a way to get him to play to his potential, lets hope it lasts the rest of the season. Sherwood did say he knew the reserves better than the first team and so had more confidence in them. Clearly his confidence in Eriksen has grown over the past few weeks and so he was happy to move him to the number 10 role. As the article says we have players coming back, add Vertonghen, Sandro, Townsend and maybe even Kaboul to a winning team and the rest of the season looks promising. Still worried about left back though.
jod
I felt the tactics were spot on in the first 25 minutes, we let them have the ball and felt our way into the match, we frustrated them into making mistakes and restricted them to distance shooting. It was a clear tactic imo and no negativity needed. Erikson and Dembele motm for me, both were direct, sublime passing and running with the ball. Realy good tactics from Tim however many of us knew the team was more suited to a 451, which we should have played against Le Ars. A little break and then we face imo the future champions of close to everything this year. A draw will suffice. Regardless of our stubborn approach to wanting 451, Tim was screaming from the sidelines to get the tactics spot on. Well done all round boys! COYS!
Mix26
jod I think the ade deal was done b4 AvB took over, so he just did not fancy him from the start. The reason for the delay was because Ade wanted his full pay off from Citeh.
WestStandEnclosure
In the end it was a bit of a stroll, but how much different could it have been if Bony had scored with his belter or Dawson had been penalised for the push? With Sandro, Paulinho and Verts to return this surely is not the team to take us to 4th place. Eriksen is beginning to show that he can emulate VDV for us, so he is nailed on with Ade to provide the goals we need. The rest must do better to secure a place as the passing was poor and not enough steel in midfield. I think we will exceed last year's points total now but will need at least 75 to get fourth.
Love totty
Sorry Cider but I'm still unsure of Vlad. He's another David Luiz, good on the ball but a bit headless and weak in the tackle.
Love totty
Exactly as I thought. It was role reversal. The team in White was like AVB's Spurs. More possession, more shots, more corners than the opposition ... yet failing to score (until the end) ... and 3-0 down. We saw what Adebayor gives you. If you cross the ball into the six yard box, he will try to get on the end of it. He has now scored a few goals like that recently. Get someone with a quality cross - Eriksen - and unlike AVB, have the intention to let the players actually cross the ball into the box, and goals will result. When Eriksen played under AVB, he looked ordinary - depsite playing in the hole which normally implies "freedom". He had just 1 assist and no goals to show for it. In the 6 games since AVB left, he has added 3 goals and 2 more assists! Those stats are incredible - especially for a non-striker. As for Ade, 5 goals and 2 assists in six games since AVB left. Incredibly good. We must build our team around those two guys. Add Paulinho & Vertonghen, and we are good to go. I am sure there will be sterner tests than that, but 5 away wins on the trot (including Old Trafford & St Mary's) cannot be argued with.
TonyRich
Love totty. No apologies required. He was brushed of the ball when attempting a tackle in MF yesterday. However, he did alot of the mopping up for other players. IMO, he is getting better and if he keeps it simple in defence and finds the right balance of when to hold the ball and drive out or smash it into row Z, he could become a truly great defender. He certainly looks more assured now compared to when we first signed him.
Cider spurs
Cheers cider, nice article. Didn't get to watch the game live but watched it last night. Tim had a sparkle in his eye in his pre match interview and suggested plenty of roaming and switching up front. That certainly happened! Well done Tim, I would have liked to have seen that kind of set up in a couple of the earlier games, but I can see you had to play it a little safe through the settling in period. I still think capoue ( or sandro) will do a better, stronger and more creative job in DM, but bentaleb did ok. Good job. Hopefully we have some of the big boys back for city, "rest" Dawson and get verts back in, sandro, capoue, Pauli. I can't wait to see lamela in this set up, but is city the right game for his return? Don't know. I do think soldado will score more with this more positive style of play, but we can't drop ade in his current form. He is showing so much fire and passion! I think even taking a 3 at the back system v city(drop rose as he will be torn a new one in that game) and get cover from midfield when required. Use Robbie and soldado upfront. Don't know. Would be exciting. All in all well done lads, just with we weren't about 20 goals behind the teams around us! It really is an extra point!
Dublin Hotspur
Love totty - in terms of Vlad, I think he will get better as he gets more accustomed to EPL. However, I do feel that he will never get used to the aerial side of English football. Therefore I think that the future would be Vert + Daws for teams that like to cross into the box, and Vert/Daws + Vlad for opponents like Swansea.
TonyRich
*wish*
Dublin Hotspur
I was particularly impressed with Sherwood regarding his sub of bringing on Naughton and moving Walker RM. Kinda gives both players confidence and endorses their cababilities. Wish we had the same option on the left. IE move Rose left wing and bring on a left back to see out games.
voltspur
Dublin - If we go to a 3 at the back system and drop Rose, then who would play on the left of midfield? Townsend...? Naughton? Rose actually does sound like the best option for that formation. I do think that 4-5-1 would be best as I am not a fan of 3 at the back in English football. As for Lamela, where do you see him slotting into the formation? Instead of Lennon? Chadli? He surely cannot take Eriksen's positon right now.
TonyRich
What a great article, it flows and it hits the points, again well done good read.
spurs50yrs
voltspur ... That was certainly an outside-the-box substitution. It had me puzzled at the time, but you have to hand it to Sherwood; he did know what he was doing.
Geofspurs
spurs50....Most kind. I recorded the Chelsea vs Man Utd match and wrote straight after our game with Swansea had concluded. I did not see Sherwoods post match interview until about 8.30 p.m last night after finishing the article and watching Man Utd game. Without blowing my own trumpet, much of what Sherwood said mirrored exactly what i had written. Must admit, i was pretty chuffed with that. Cider Spurs, calls it like the Manager.
Cider spurs
Don't call Kenny....Call Cider!. ;-)
Cider spurs
hahahahahahaha Cider I bet u have a vuvuzela lying about somewhere...
Mix26
You have to wonder what would have happened if we had played Ade as a lone striker from day one - with a strong and creative midfield ... I think we may have collected another 5 or 6 points. But, then again, what's the good of wondering?!
Geofspurs
Good post TonyRich, Laudrup is in danger of going the AVB route, having the ball is ok but you need to produce with it and not just hope to pop one in from 30 yards, Dawson very lucky wth the pen. We have found the way to play good football again and most importantly how to create clear cut chances. More quality players to come back, next challenge IMO is how to deal with a blip, highly likely to come our way in the next game. Best way i guess is avoid it, tough ask next week. For this week the only olayer who didnt step up in the waiting to step up is Chadli upon Thames. A place not quite of the same pace as London
tophobunty1882
Dublin...Morning. Yes, it was a joy to watch the final 3rd when we got going, the overlapping runs from Rose and Walker. Alot more fluidity and actually playing defence/midfield splitting balls that are creating chances. crossing we are poor, but in fairness we did not attempt too many yesterday and could still have scored 5. City will be a hard test, hopefully we'll get something out of the game. If we don't, it would serve us well to remember how well Sherwood has done and just how good City are.
Cider spurs
Another excellent article Cider. Pretty much sums up everything that went on in the game. I'm with you on Vlad. I think he's going to be one hell of a player for us. He's not there yet but there is enough glimpses of his talent to convince me he will be a star player for seasons to come. Eriksen is the one player I love the most. That ball he whipped in was majestic. The weight of the pass from Lennon was perfection allowing Eriksen to look up before crossing. Bring on City lol. COYS!
James1
*Not 5 goals from crosses* But 5 from formation splitting ground passes.
Cider spurs
Cider, agree fully. The way they are playing we can't expect to beat city, but we can hope to! They are away after all, and I would like to see us go at them!
Dublin Hotspur
Morning James...Another good win, get a few back and get ready for the ride. Agree Eriksen, I couldn't believe it when we were able to sign him. Love the fact even more that he openly stated that he had other offers at the time, but he felt Spurs were the club for him. What a player. Just goes to show what a bit of time, a managers trust, and playing in a favoured position can bring to the players. Get a few more fulfilling their potential and we really will be in good shape.
Cider spurs
Yesterday was a good example of how stats lie. AvB supporters would throw the shots on goal stats down your neck and point to our abysmal conversation ratio to blame the players under performing. The fact is, playing like we did (and how Swansea did yesterday) means the shots you are having are not from advantageous positions. All slow build up, sideways backwards and thump a 25 yarder out the ground. We have now got the best conversion rate under Sherwood, and that's not due to players performing better, its the quality of chances created due to breaking teams down and getting men inside the box. Sherwood's style means we will concede, yet we will always score as well!
liamyid
Tony, like I said I don't know. But unfortunately I do see rose as a liability. I know he got an assist yesterday, but maybe he should be playing more forward/ winger? I don't necessarily think the city game is the right one for lamela to come back. But I would love to see him playing either up front with ade/ Robbie, or see how he goes switching in for chadli or Lennon. Him, eriksen, ade could be amazing, think we should look to build around these once he gets some solid game time and ( hopefully) proves himself, which I'm sure he will. I get the impression Tim is pretty excited about getting him back and into his setup! It's so hard because we really do have a very strong squad, especially in the AM arena.
Dublin Hotspur
Cider, like you I am a big fan of Chriches, he is such a good naturally talented footballer, great to see. His englishifaction will happen over time and not doubt he will improve is some ways as time goes by. The concern at CB in this partnership is the other chap sadly. Still think if fully fit hard to shift a combo of Kaboul and Verts.
tophobunty1882
and on Chadli Cider, I know you like him as a player, truth is every opportunity he is given to step up he doesn't, I think his chances are limited but like all players we have purchased i genuinely hope they deliver well.
tophobunty1882
And cider, I'm really enjoying the wins! I'm not being negative, but we have beaten 6 teams below us in the league! And that's great! We do need to get a couple of scalps from the teams above us and also do the toon! I am starting to think we can do this with TS. It's a shame we have city so soon, so we could have settled in some of the big boys and given erik a run of games before we invite them to the lane. It will tell us a lot about how to go about the other top teams if nothing else!
Dublin Hotspur
Love Totty i share your views on Vlad , although not quite the 'accident waiting to happen' as he was in his first few games, i think he has got a quiet word in his ear to get rid as opposed to playing out from the back ALL the time . i mentioned this on the palace game thread but Vlad is very suspect from a through ball that is knocked between him and rose ! has anyone noticed teams targeting this ?
South L/Derry Spurs
Dublin, it's hard to see a way into this now for Lamela barring injuries. Like most on here I see glimpses of quality but there's a lot against it happening at the moment. Somehow TS needs to find the right game for him and really hope it goes well for him. IMO AVB seriously missed the boat with Lamela in the home game against Newcastle most notably.
tophobunty1882
topho...Chadli did not excite me much yesterday, i can't really see him getting ahead of Eriksen, Lamela or Soldado for a central slot all too often. However, i do still believe he is a far better player than we have bore witness to thus far. That said, performances and time as we both know, do not always go hand in hand. Especially with numerous players capable of playing a favoured position are already staking worthwhile claims.

Chiriches, you know i like this lad. Still a bit clumsy at times, but does so many right things so well. Daws 4th choice for me. That said, it depends on opponents. Daws likes the aerial battles when teams are whipping balls in from the wing.
Cider spurs
Morning all. Fantastic display yesterday and a great 3 points. I wasn’t too sure about the way TS lined up but I think he got most of it right. Bantaleb had another great game yesterday. I must admit, I was a bit sceptical but in all fairness he is doing a good job. He certainly doesn’t look like he only just broke into the team. As you mention the star performers were Ade and Eriksen, both are looking like different players in the new system

It wouldn’t be a true spurs forum if ai didn’t bring up the negatives but for me Rose Is looking like a real weak link. Very poor defensively. Chadli had an ok game but certainly didn’t do anything that should guarantee him a start V city. Should have made it 2-0 when he was 1-1 with trammel. Lennon must be the most frustrating player in the PL, does all the hard work and then makes a complete mess of it when it counts. The number of times he could have slipped in a through ball to ADE but just didn’t see it was unforgivable. Siggy – why oh why does he get game time over Holtby, Lamela etc anyway that’s the negatives lol and I am nit picking. Overall it was a bloody good performance and I enjoyed every minute of it.
hudderspur
Only half heard the snippet on SSN just now. Think they said Bentaleb made 10 tackles yesterday. Most on the pitch, and the 3rd highest of any player in any prem match this season. If i did indeed hear this correctly, then boy, what a player. He really does just go about his business, and if those stats are indeed true, add to this his pass completion and the number of passes, what a talent we have. Handful of games and already 3rd in tackle per game stakes, and he looked so comfortable. Could have one scary player on our hands. What a dilemna, Sandro and Betaleb, Paulinho, Dembele, Capoue. So many options.
Cider spurs
What is happening is that our quality is finally allowed to flourish. We now are merely achieving what we should be doing - look at our bench vs Swansea: Holtby, Capoue, Soldado, Defoe, Siggy, Freidel, Naughton. Most of those would have started if they were in Swansea's squad. And that is just our bench. If you combine that with the fact that we were missing Paulinho, Sandro, Vertonghen, Townsend, Lamela, then you realise that we really have assembled a top four quality squad. A top four quality squad should "go for it", as they are intrinsically good enough. But the first half of the season saw as play far too tentatively. The quality of the squad got us a decent number of points, but it always was capable of more.
TonyRich
Cider he might be a far better player outside the Prem. It's unique in the world of football and some just cant hack it at the moment he clearly cant. I hope he does, if Eriksen is nailed on central which i think he should be then Chadli does step up to 2nd choice for left side. With you on Chiriches, I think I might have been the most vocal on here ( thats a change) to sign him before the first attempt which failed from a prison cell. He is so very very good naturally the rest is down to application, coaching and experience. I hope he makes top level he is so close already.
tophobunty1882
South L/Derry...Yes mate. I wrote on an article how the ball between Rose and Vlad was being exploited. I think you'll find reference to this in the post Southampton match article.
Cider spurs
Good article Cider. Found a good stream that only went down during extra time. Thoroughly entertaining game. Spurs (in white) got done by Man City in pale blue.lol. Well done TS for the set up and changes. A couple of below par performances but more above average ones to counteract them. Lets see if the team in white can beat the team in pale blue next time they meet. COYS.
longtimespur
Tom Cleverley rumours now. We need another midfielder like I need a wart on my bell end lugosi. If we do let it be Matta or Ben Arfa. Cleverly is about as average as Siggy. Why would we want to buy anyone who struggles to get in this united side?
tophobunty1882
So tough this season. We have had more than our share of injuries, and i can't but not agree with Sherwood, every week i look for those teams above us to slip up whilst we are winning, but nope, apart from the odd blip (Liverpol at weekend) all keep winning, ourselves also. Really going to take a huge effort to secure a top 4 spot, but we are giving ourselves one great chance. Hopefully players returning will add a lift to the squad, no time for sulkers if dropped, i want all the players to feel part of the cause. Looking at the bench yesterday and all that was missing player wise as TonyRich has stated, we really are in for a right tear up for the remainder of the season. Exciting times. If we could just get the home form going, i'd suggest we'd be favourites for 4th at least.
Cider spurs
longtime..I enjoyed it also. Glad your link was good. many have said, when we play this team or that team it'll be a true test. We must be doing something right. We are now level with the once nominated contenders for the title. It has been the thrashings that have stained the memory. City, Liverpool and West ham aside. We are doing rather well. Way to go, but at least we now look like we are giving ourselves a chance. 11 shots yesterday, 5 on target. Seems a bit more acceptable, and certainly points to us improving our scoring chances. Alot of the chances are quality also, add to this at least 4 times we could have created a very good goalscoring chance and we are getting alot closer to where we need to be.
Cider spurs
Tom Cleverley is not required IMO.
Cider spurs
The Report: Swansea vs. Spurs; WE WON again.
spu 4 life
Tops, agree re AVB missing an opportunity for getting lamela out earlier, but I can see him playing a dominant role up there. I also think chiriches is a class act. Some squad lads, just need a few of those scalps. Arsenal, yes please, Chelsea, yes please, Everton, yes please, pool, yes please, toon, oh yes. City... Please god. I think bar city they are all realistic! Would love to put it up to city, but it will be tough. A challenge and some goals for us.. Yes please! COYS!
Dublin Hotspur
Cider ..... It's great we ars creating good chances inside the opposition's penalty area and not just hoping for a Bale spectacular. Think the team looks to be enjoying playing again, which makes for better performances. We all know that a happy work force equals higher output. COYS

topho ... I agree with your posts re Chiriches and Chadli. Also agree about Vert and Kaboul as CB. I think Ade should be the striker if we play one up front, but, if we play two up front it should be Ade and Soldado. I still think we can get a lot more from Soldado. What do you reckon?

Geof...Everything is Blue and White!. I've heard about James' inability to paint properly. Decorating a few weeks back, my arse. James even coloured all the pictures in the glossy magazines Blue and White proceeding to tell his missus whom had left him to decorate that it was "the look for 2014".."Check out the magazines dear". Shocking Behaviour!.
Cider spurs
Geof, yes to Ade if one up front. I think this leaves Soldado in a tough position, he has not produced anywhere close to expectations, now part of this is not down to him which is tough on him, but Ade is just much more suited to one up top. Then if you want to add to that, ie get more men forward IMO it's much better having one or more arriving from all over the place and at pace from deeper than having one more static, much easier to mark already up there, which IMO is what Soldado is limited to offer. To me it has to be 451 switching to 433 more often that not and there are many more players more suited to offer more all round to that than Soldado. I feel for Soldado to a degree, but ultimately it has been down to him to offer much more than he has, I don't think he is suited to the way we are playing and should play in the prem.
tophobunty1882
Good post Topho. I like Soldado and hoped he would prove to be a good buy for us. However, with the resurgence of Adebayor and our improved performance, fluidity, threat and solidity playing with only one up top I fear that Soldado finds himself in no-man's land. A fit Adebayor on top of his game is ideal and sometimes unplayable as the lone striker. If he goes off the boil Soldado cannot offer the same threat. Maybe we have to bite the bullet on Soldado or he has to accept that he is not going to be our number one striker. Whether we or he are happy to do that I don't know.
SpuriousLife
Unusual but great. We got one assist each from our full backs yesterday. It's along time since I can remember that happening.

Yes, we're beating teams below us. If we didn't beat them all, they'd be above us……… ;-)
MAN ON!
Sorry, that was meant for the other article……..
MAN ON!
Lotso f links to Marco Reus this morning, I think we should sell Chadli, Sig, Loan out Holtby and Capoue and being in an A lister such as Reus. We've seen what happens when you sign too many players..but still feel we need a bit more quality up front - think of city with negredo, aguero, dzeko, silva, toure, nasri..that is 5 top top class players at top of the pitch - for us we have (at the mo Adebeyor) Erikson, Lamela (future) and...uuuum...Soldado? Maybe he will start firing but yeah. We need to upgrade..look at the quality of the squads around us. I know we aren't desperate for players but we should be desperate for top 4 - IMO: Sell the dross (or loan) Chadli, Sig, Livermore, Naughton, Capoue, Hotbly..bring in Reus, Bernard (linked again - this lad can play & has paulinho and sandro to help him settle) and a new left back! It looks like Tim Sherwood has got us doing the spurs attack dance so lets solidify our bench -imagine: Lloris, walker, verts, kaboul, new LB, Sandro, Paulihno, erikson, lamela, bernard, adebeyor, reus..all interchanging. IMO chadli is not going to take us to the promised land!!! If we had a front 5 of: Ade, Lamela, Erikson, Bernard, Rues (wow!) all interchangeable and quick! I think we will end up leaving out Dembele as Paulinho is all round better with a goal threat! I keep saying this but imagine our best back 5 with Paulihno holding with erikson CM, one wing townsend or lennon, other wing lamela with bernard / rues omg it could be mouth watering! I like the idea of the interchanging very fast attack!
chavli
But either way, TS is doing great job..really think now is the time to consolidate and push for another top top signing (in my opinion we paid wayyyyyy toooo much for soldado - sure he is a good finisher but we need more from a front man! Like someone said on Sky yesterday - if we had Suarez - we'd be above liverpool! We just lack that superstar striker IMO. Like I've said on many posts, we only broke even on Bale sale...if that! We have funds..go get a world beater ffs and we can solidify our top 4 hopes! Just like that year in Champs league - we sahould of got a top striker - and had we - we may of qualified again! Great squad - a little shuffle and 1 or 2 upgrades we could really really push!!! COYS
chavli
yes spot on Spurious, very tough call ref Soldado. .....it really does seem to me to give him a chance to play the way he needs we need to change shape and the way we play, which IMO is not as productive for the tam, that can't be good for us if indeed it is the case.
tophobunty1882
Well written report Cider spurs……
MAN ON!
Chavli I think it should be a choice between Reus and Bernard not both, we still need a proper LB. Even with the sale of Siggy and Chadli we'd still have to find room for townsend, Lennon, Erisken, Paulinhio, Dembele, Lamela, Ade, Soldado and thats before you add Reus or Bernard - too many players will cause people ot get upset with lack of game time, With both Wlaker and Rose able to be utilised in a wide midfield role we have plenty of options for wingers but are hampered with our options for full backs. Replace Defoe with a proper mobile target man - someone like Ade! and we may have to consider adding another CB to the sqaud if Kaboul fails to regain full fitness. those are the transfers we need to focus on. On a slightly different note - interesting to see Chadli and Ade side by side for our opener, Chadli is a massive lump of a player, could he be an option as a target man as opposed to a midfielder at all?
Slurms McKenzie
Yes slurms, re chadli, especially for set pieces. Him and ade / soldado winning in the air and mopping up. I still don't think we've played him correctly yet. So many options! Yet needing to give regular game time to a core unit! Tough tough job TS has.
Dublin Hotspur
Slurms McKenzie, Although Chadli wasn't great yesterday he looked a lot happier having more freedom to move around the midfield, interchanging with Eriksen. I think he would make a good target man and given more freedom. will start scoring/making goals.
MAN ON!
I agree Chadli is a big lad, but just don't think he'll help us push higher than where we are. I say Reus and Bernard would give good options as they are both different and very quick! I would only sign the two if we could shift 4 players (IMO Chadli, Sig - sold & Loan Capoue & Holtby) People say we have to keep people happy but compare our squad player by player to chelsea and man city - and you'll see we are not as strong - this is all I mean - chadli is good but not a world beater
chavli
Geofspurs no such luck with cat. We didn't go in the end. We searched online and put a few enquiries but no response as of yet. Geofspurs as soon as I get the cat I'm going to get it a spurs kit even if it means I get a half mangled hand courtesy of the cat! Cider that hurts..I did decorate but trust me, it wasn't your arse and not the colour you'd hoped ;) COYS!

Eriksen was excellent yesterday...he has the ability to play quick, one touch footy and scoring goals and assists consistently. What impressed me most however was his tracking back in defence. Numerous times he got a foot in to nick the ball and break up Swansea attacks. His work rate alone is twice that of Soldado. Clearly growing in confidence, showing pace I never knew he had, running the ball at the defence. Very impressed. All in all a good team performance. Only negative in first 20 or so with Swansea passing through our centre midfield. Thought Dembele/Bentaleb were both too similar in planting themselves and allowing balls in behind them. Credit to them though they adapted and handled Swansea well after that. Will be a welcome headache for Tim when Sandro and Paulinho are both available...COYS!
LOS Spurs
chavli, with respect, our squad is pretty strong considering we don't have the throwaway funds of both City and Chelsea.
MAN ON!
Love the AVB haters using this as their platform for invalid truths... Interesting to see that AVB's preferred formation worked fantastic yesterday and not Tims 442 which has been far less convincing but got us goals and results. I find it interesting that posters are now frantic about Tims (HR) approach to the game of u score 2,we score3. The ground work this season prepared by AVB is a blueprint for TS to work from. He has the choice between many excellent players who when called upon to 'Run About" for the match to produce results. We have fortunate not to concede more goals under Tim and up till yesterday we looked unbalanced and more inclined to win on the counter like our previous HR team. Indeed Erikson is looking the part despite featuring on the left predominately (without MAJOR ramifications from Spurs fans re the crazy pora tactics lol) and certain players who have perhaps settled in more over the season. We honestly dont need to dwell on the history of AVB vs Spurs fans as clearly there is no middle ground 2 months on...
Mix26
topho ... yes, I guess I agree with you about Soldado. It's a pity that he does not suit our play or our play doesn't suit him. No-ones fault ... just how it is. Not sure where that leaves him now, though.
Geofspurs
Mix26, were you being sarcastic with the first post on here? :-) It seems your last one contradicts it.
MAN ON!
Sorry, I went back and read your second post praising Tim. May be it was your last post that is sarcastic.

James ... I'm more a dog person (love Boxer dogs, and got one now). Never liked cats much and argued with the family about getting one. I went bush for a few days with some mates on our motorbikes a few weeks back, and when I got home there's my wife and two kids sitting back watching TV ... with our new cat! That's what happens when you go away! What can ya do?!

Geofspurs I'm a dog lover as well. We had a lovely staff who was soppy and intelligent. Loved kids but hated dogs lol. This is a compromise with the Mrs. She likes dogs but she don't trust them fully with kids around. I understand this but I always thought cats were more vicious. .so a cat it is :( COYS!

Just pointing out the obvious once again topho... obviously your posts need more then a fine tooth comb before putting ones thumb on what u actually have an opinion of,which changes daily to suit your Chelscum/Spurs support thing u have....
Mix26
Put it this way: I don't think anyone would argue if we sold chadli and go in Reus! Then lightened up our midfield area, I've really got a soft spot for bernard..AVB wanted him, so did Arsene..he can really play..so quick, intelligent...please mr levy :)
chavli
As for the reus and Bernard talk, well Reus is top draw, possible, but highly unlikely we could pull that one off. Bernard, might be a useful prospect, think i'm right in saying he is good at playing of the Left. Fact of the matter remains, adding these players will only make things harder selection wise. Reus over Eriksen, quality no doubt, but could it not be argued that at 3 years Eriksens senior, that Eriksen may also get to this level. He's not too far behind, does it make sense replacing him and hindering his progression for a circa £30 million fee?. Bernard could do well, again, why not play Townsend for a while on the left and see how he performs. Let's get current players playing and see where they top out performance wise before adding more headaches to the equation. All IMO though. ;-)
Cider spurs
As for Tim, I'm not a fan but I'm not biased in the fact we were excellent on Sunday and praise should be given. I want Spurs to do well even if I don't like the manager in charge. I just liked to point out the obvious that despite a great display from Spurs, posters have to continue with negativity about the club. It seems some Spurs fans need that negativity in their life otherwise football wont be the same...
Mix26
Mix, i think I am one of the most consistent of posters on here, my views really don't change, I have been chastised for it many a time on here. I think many on here would agree to that and a small number wouldn't, you would be in that camp. Now you seem to be saying the opposite, some people just cant be pleased. ........................................Cider, I still like one of your other punts, Pato, but to me the last thing we need is an AM somehow we need to get some return from lamela and clearly Eriksen will be very good there. Still need a forward a LB and possibly another CB. I guess all could change at the end of the season if we don't make CL again.
tophobunty1882

tophobunty1882
I have to say that Adebayor is looking lean, mean and strong. Keep it up and please keep scoring. Eriksen, as others have said, is looking better with every game. He seems to be enjoying his new found freedom. Bentaleb is very efficient and does the simple things well and without fuss. Well done lad. Dembele was strong and reliable as usual. Lloris you're a star. I thought Walker played well and seemed to win most of his tackles. Also, very strong and purposeful going forward. Our two CB's were also strong and won most of their duals. I think both Naughton and Siggy did well coming on and I'm sure they did well, what Tim had asked of them. Lennon was not bad but wasn't at his best. Chadli ok, but could do much better. Rose was good and not so good. He needs to practise those crosses. He seems to lack a bit of confidence….. Overall though it was a very good team performance and I credit Sherwood for getting his tactics spot on. Well played Spurs.
MAN ON!

If Ade and Dembele were to do a few rounds in the ring, my money would be on the Moose. Ade was fuming. Dembele had the look of a guilty child who knows he's wrong but won't admit it. Made me smile…..
MAN ON!
Yes to no more AM topho. Not even the current nebies have a good run at 10, let alone who's going to be 1st choice CM. Leave that one aloneuntil we know where we are with requirements and if indeed short at all. LB, Rodriguez.. Wolfsburg, Alex Sandro..Porto, and an outsider Marcelo at RM( special relationship n' all). Appears Real Madrid have or are about to sign a new LB. As for CB, the one i would have liked but alas he has not long signed new contract is Doria who plays for Botafogo in Brazil. Think he is only contracted until next year so may just be a goer.

I agree with you cider..but what I'm saying is 'for the squad' it would be nice to shift on 4 or 5 and get in 2 of real quality. Personally I think we should put Erikson in the middle of the park with Paulinho- then have an attacking 3 in between mid and striker. I like the way we are playing, just feel that there is nothing wrong with upgrading if the opportunity is there.
I'd really like to see
Lloris, walker, verts, kaboul, A left back, Paulihno, Erikson, Lamela, Reus, Bernard, Adebeyor......then on the bench: Townsend, Lennon, Dembele, Sandro, Bentaleb, Capoue etc...
chavli
Mix, i changed by name because one user on here who I have disagreed with had asked a number of times for my user to be banned and threatened not to come back whilst I was allowed to post. I found that sad and refused to give up my name. That's history now and I think it's behind most who want to avoid bringing it up, you appear to be last man standing of that club and for some reason wish to continue. Why not simply state a number of issues here you feel i have not been consistent on or changed my view on and we can debate it. Why not also give me one reason why you think I might be a chelsea supporter? Or was that simple a personal insult from you to me?...................
tophobunty1882
Marcelo yes Cider I suggested him when we were in for Coentrao and still feel the same, being as consistent as ever and all that stuff. Good call.
tophobunty1882
I'm not saying I don't like our current bench etc but an upgrade is always welcome! For those who say 'no more am' fair enough..but would you not swap 4 of the average for 1 or 2 'better than average' players? I would you rather aim for 4th than 1st?
chavli
U right topho u are definitely consistent... Playing the victim once again... I don't and won't go through the long list of your consistent malice and vile abuse you posted about Spurs and posters! U were banned and warned for that and not because 1 single poster didnt like ur posts. As this being the 4th or 5th time I have had to remind u of it, it's certainly consistent with your forgetful views. Non the less I will happy to call u out any time you wish in the future...
Mix26
chavli...Yes i see your point. Maybe with Champs league football we would bw able to keep all these quality players happy. Reus, Lamela or Eriksen, although would be nice, whilst i agree getting rid of fringe players and adding 2 quality. Reus is already going to go in ahead of Lamela and Eriksen, would we not then have to get rid of Eriksen or Lamela?. That's my point. Don't get me wrong i'm all for upgrading when the time comes along. I just feel at present we might just have real quality in this role, the only players maybe going are those that we already have better playing frequently in the position in any case. All i can see is those who do not figure being shipped out, not replaced. A LB as an improvement or at least competition to Rose and another striker maybe.
Cider spurs
Chavli, I would only have Erisken int he No. 10 role, playign him deeper will have our midfield over run, where are the average players you want ot ship out, because I have yet to see enough of any of them to make that judgement and thent o suggest replacing them with players who are doign well in other leagues? As I recall Holtby, Chadli, Lamela and Soldado were all doing very well in their respective leagues before they joined us, so I don't buy your theory of trading average for better! I agree we are still week ont eh left side even when Townsend returns we could still be one hamnstring away from not having a recognised left winger again, but as I recall Danny Rose started as aLW and moved back to LB because needs must, I think his defending (like bale) is prooving he coudl be a more useful left winger again - if he works on his crossing. So LB for me is where we need to spend urgently, Possibly a striker but with Lamela, chadli, Ade, Soldado all in the squad its not essential at this stage unless a proper target man is available at a steal. Also a CB might be requried as we still have question marks over Kabouls fitness.
Slurms McKenzie
Who broke the site?
Cider spurs
Mix - 4-5-1 as played by AVB and 4-5-1 as played by Sherwood are the same? Just like a Lada and Ferari are both the same beacsue they are cars?
Slurms McKenzie
Cider its a toss up between Chavli, Topho, Mix or Cidona? My money is on either Chavli or apple juice!
Slurms McKenzie
Slurms ... I agree with you re Eriksen. I think he is showing that he is a number 10, with the freedom to roam. Just read it again and, actually, I agree with the rest of your post, too. Really looking forward to seeing Sherwood's line-up for the City game.
Geofspurs
If we would by some miraculous feat buy Marco Reus why would it be a question of playing either Reus or Eriksen? Correct me if I am wrong but Reus plays on the right. Imagine a line-up of Eriksen (LAM), Lamela (CAM) and Reus (RAM) behind Adebayor with Sandro and Paulinho as central midfielders! But that will never happen.
Jables
Thanks Geof, i find if you spell enough words wrong people just interpret the post any way they want! Apologies for the horrific spelling and fair play for getting through it!
Slurms McKenzie
Jables, erisken being played out of position on the left has done well when he has drifted inside but we need a left sided winger and at the moment Townsend is the only one at the club who fits the bill and he's injured. Rose is not competent enough defender to cover the whole fo the left flank on his own.
Slurms McKenzie
We all know what league Chadli came from, so with respect he might have performed well at a lower level but yeah I get your point - all I'm literally saying is I'd prefer Reus over Chadli! You say we would get over run? We did the other day but with playing 2 strikers - if we played just single striker with the 3 behind (let's say: Lamela, Bernard, Reus) we would be pressing further up the pitch and dropping deeper when required. This is a similar set up to Bayern, Arsenal, Barca..it's interchangable. Not rocket science, of course if we play 2 up top with Erikson in CM we may get over run yes..I'm only making suggestions..think of Barcelona (lovely city) the past few years they have played with mostly attacking mids - done them much hard? ball retention and penetration...
chavli
Final note on Bernard..he is another star in the making..would love to see him team up with Sandro and Paulihno..and Gomes :) Do it Mr Levy...please! Reus would be a signing on intent..IMO
chavli
Slurms the formations are ideticle yet the style of play is set to counter the oposition rather than maintain possession and control the tempo. My point was that we look much better than the 442 being used. We look comfortable and players are aware of their task at hand, something we can thank AVB for.
Mix26
Slurms, you must be irish! No one else would know what cidona is! FYI everyone else, it's sparkling apple juice we pay a fortune for in a pint glass with ice when hungover, to pretend we are drinking bulmers(magners)! Tastes the same without the hit or curing qualities!
Dublin Hotspur
Agree with you there Mix, I still feel the 4-4-2 was being used to give us a platform of points to build from and also due to the players available. A bit of time and distance from the dreaded AVB 4-5-1 was probably also needed. But yes, 4-5-1, players played out of position, third and fourth choice CBs, young kid in CM and we still looked miles better then 4-5-1 crafted on a laptop!
Slurms McKenzie
mix26 usual chaff, evidence, prrof with context and root of any discussion/argument, failing that it's really not worth discussion, I could claim anything about you but would back it up. Sad Sad. O.

Slurms McKenzie
ok so now AVB is the only manager ever to play 451 and Tim copied him and we have AVB to thank for that. its getting better by the hour.
tophobunty1882
Please no more purchases unless a proven top quality left back is available.
mattkk
Lot of peiople saying 'we have not played Chadli properly yet" Really???? I mean Really??? We have played him more than Lamela. Chadli is useless and will offer noyhing to this team...NOTHING. Of that I am 100% sure. He has been crap (and i rarely slag any player) he is shocking and not even the potential to be considerd anywhere near the standard of player we need.
ledgespur
@ledgespur, I agree with you. Chadli should be behind Townsend, Lamela and Siggy in selection order. Only thing I can see him offering us is some aerial ability, but for a relatively tall guy he is too soft in those too.
Jables
ledge stronger than I would have put it, but its true, we have tried him left right and centre....ie all across the line, as some put it. and he quite simply has not been very good at all.
tophobunty1882
Slurms, and rock shandy!
Dublin Hotspur
For those of you wishing to see Bernard and Reus signed. There seems some confusion as to where their favoured position might be. Both are Left Wing types. Reus two footed, Bernard of his Right. Buying both therefore would be madness. I rest my case m'lord.
Cider spurs
Slurms I could not agree more in terms of the pitch performances, however I felt we honestly looked very open and players were unsure of their positions. Im very glad Tim dropped Soldado, he will now need to score to get into the team as it's clear Erikson offers more in creativity. topho even though I've nothing really to say to u Ill ask u to read my posts further up so as not to extend my fingers and waste my time with a chav.
