Tim Sherwood: The Best of British!

For someone who is still rated by many as merely keeping the hot seat warm for a bigger, but not necessarily better name, Tim Sherwood seems to be doing quite well. Well from my perspective, I have to feel a certain smugness that my desire to see him given the job, seems to be well founded, for now at least. I had a "debate' in the pub, last week over Sherwood/AVB and even in ignoring the positive results and seemingly bigger smiles on the players faces, I asked the other chaps to name me one player that had actually improved under AVB during his time at the club? I dismiss Bale as a freak of nature, that would have improved, if myself and Coopsie were running the show. Under Sherwood, we have not only seen the re-emergence of Adebayor, but also seen Eriksen improve, game upon game and of course who would have seen the selection and success of Nabil Bentaleb?

Of course Tim isn`t yet at legendary status and though he subtly claims he is still fighting to get the job, long term and needs a top four to get it, I wonder if it is more about his vision, fan, media and of course sponsor confidence, whilst is a narrow sixth place, in a really strong finish really a reason to dispense with a man that might just have something going, if given more time and resources to slightly reshape and reinvigorate a squad that was built for someone else? I always feel any manager needs a summer and good pre season to get his methods across. Sherwood may well have the advantage of knowing the players, the club and staff, but he isn`t coming in from that position of strength and fan blind support, that an established name might have expected.

Sherwood, effectively has to win over everyone connected to the club and prove he has the tactical and man management skills to take on the role and though he perha[s still base some way to go, I have to say I am feeling good about supporting my team again and enjoying the football, even though it isn`t quite to the level and quality I hope it will be. Lets see improvements from bringing back some big players, lets see the improvement from work on the training ground and lets see the benefits from a manager that knows he has the chance to build for the longer term, as opposed to having to work for the short one, just to keep his job. I think they dally it stability and the confidence that brings. Sure we need to be winning games, but I also believe that with confidence and backing from the board, players, fans and media, Tim will feel justified in his decisions and confident that one bad result or mistake, wont put him back to being seen as the short term solution.

Now, I am not sure whether yesterdays change in formation was tactical or that Soldado was still carrying a slight knock, but it shows that he is not afraid to "rest" big money players and also it gives Soldado a real problem in getting his place back. Perhaps against City, it is sensible to only play one striker, and if you had to pick a man to face City, it would have to be Ade, but is playing two, tactical suicide? Its a yes from me. He could have opted for Defoe, but was Swansea effectively a dress rehearsal for City? There might well be an argument to see Sandro, Townsend and Vertonghen next weekend, but I can see the the shape of the team being pretty much as we saw at the weekend. Is this another indication that we are developing the team, looking at the opposition and generally being a little more clever and tactically aware than some would like to portray him?

It is still early days, but the fact I see players enjoying themselves, the team playing better and more attractive football and individual improvements, I have to give praise to Tim Sherwood and his team. We might not get a top four place, but lets also accept that the competition has never been tougher. Just ask David Moyes!

Barton's comments could equally well apply to Rodgers at Liverpool. There has been a perception in recent years that all foreign managers are wonderful and all British managers are rubbish, at some point the pendulum must start swinging the other way. So far its hard to see what Tim could have done better. He's won the league games, when he's spoken he's talked sense and he was even honest enough to admit Swansea should have had a penalty.

Can i say i agree with the article and love the way we are playing, we are putting a good string of results together but, is it me but our defence over the last 4 games look very dodgy, not because of the two centre halfs but the protection they used to get, with better teams to play we will get beaten badley if we dont sort it out, coys
spurs50yrs
I think Sherwood got his formation spot on yesterday. Have to agree that this formation should yet again be utilised against City. Great to see the players actually appearing to enjoy their football once more. Allowance to express themselves and the trust in the sense that their natural ability should be released instead of harnessed by rigid formations. I posted late last week, if Sherwood continues impressing(he won't win them all) and the team are putting in the effort and we have a settled, happy camp. Would it not be wise to give him his final year, back him somewhat, and see where he can take us?. A settled, happy, hardworking squad is what's partly required. If Sherwood can continue with these elements, i'm happy to goalong for the ride and see where he takes us. At present, you can't really ask anymore of him. Well done!.
Cider spurs
Completely agree Ox. One thing I didn't even realise under AVB was that I wasn't actually enjoying watching us play. Games were always drab affairs but under Tim it seems we have that spark back. Think Eriksen is a class act as well and will go on to be a very important player for us.
millspur
He's doing very well, especially as he's using the TOOLS available to him AND WINNING. AVB ARE YOU LEARNING??? COYS
DaSPURS
DaSPURS - exactly. That is what management is. To assess ALL the tools at your disposal and use them in the most optimal manner. With a minor tweak: Ade instead of Soldado/Defoe, AVB could still be in the job. But it wasn't just that - Eriksen has been totally cut free to run the show. Why restrict him...? AVB let Bale run free, why not Eriksen or Lamela?
TonyRich
Very good post and I agree with pretty much all of what you say. The switch to 4-3-3 was a good one for me, was chatting with my housemates when the teams came out, and we agreed that if it worked, it shows that Tim does have the tactical know how to help us progress, I thought that apart from the 1st 15mins, we were much the better side. They are 2 good options to have, we've shown we can win playing both formations now, and I feel we have players coming back that will suit both, namely Lamela, whom I am desperate to see become a success at the Lane! a 4-3-3 is his formation. We're quietly going about turning it around, and it wasn't even THAT bad before, sure, perfomances were not great but the league position was acceptable (just), we're now getting results & playing the football we all wanted to see.......just gotta keep our fingers crossed for a Pepe Mel masterclass tonight! COYS

If Sherwood's title is 'Head Coach', not, 'manager' ... does that suggest that he will have no say in who we buy and who we sell?! Because, if so, it seems likely that his future in terms of the first team, is only temporary? Unless, of course, we win the EL and finish in the top four.
Geofspurs
Spot on and so are you, jod. I've always wondered what do foreign managers know about the British game and British players that British managers do not. And what can players from foreign leagues do that players from the Premiership or with Premiership experience cannot? Yet we seem to get caught time and again in this fetish/fashion of engaging fancy foreign managers and players. Did we not learn with Santini, Ramos and AVB that we are linked with Van Gaal, Hiddink and who knows who? One question though - why would playing two strikers against City be tactical suicide? They play with two from Aguero, Negredo and Dzeko after all. But I do think a defensive midfielder (Capoue or Sandro) is vital against them. We could even have Chiriches in the holding role if Vertonghen returns and Sandro is not 100%. As Newcastle have shown (with Cabaye), the way to make things difficult for City is try and match them with pace and power.
hiano
All that said, our side could really do with purchasing the Swansea striker - HE's great...
DaSPURS
You're absolutely right, DaDpurs. Wilfried Bony to replace Defoe for me.
hiano
Sorry, DaSpurs not Dad purrs.
hiano
Gotta give Tim credit for his tactics against swansea. Lets hope he gets it right against City too. As well as Bentaleb has performed, i do feel we need a tougher CM for the city clash and Sandro has to play if fit. Ox, u mention the improvement of Erikssen, but what about Dembele. I think his last 2 games have been the best of the season for him. The defence: lets just hope Verts and Kaboul are fit soon cos Daws and Chiriches together worry me alot:)!
jhbspur
He holds up the ball very well & boy does he know how to strike the ball. He'd cause problems for any defence. AND he should be cheap!!! What's his name - BONY!!!
DaSPURS
It is extremely hard to believe that these are the exact same players that were available to AVB, yet he didn't wanted to select many of the individuals that are shining now. The 433/451 system was deployed yesterday and my word doesn't Sherwood use it differently. I can honestly say I have fallen back in love with my old lover again. Spurs that is. In regards to the Citeh game, the same formation has to be applied but with slightly different personal. Having said that, people would suggest that Bentaleb should be dropped for Capoue but has his performances warranted him being dropped? Not for me. Dawson? Possibly. Chadli? But he needs the game time. Its a good conundrum to have especially when there is revenge at stake.
Lady Tottingham
@ Hiano, somewhat befitting as we are purring pretty well at the moment anyway. I'm so keen to see Tim's selection against Citey. I feel we need both Sandro & Capoue to sit in front of our defence. Personally, I agree with jhbspur - Please do not use Dawson, but we only have Vert, cos Kaboul might not be fit enough. And Rose still concerns me at Left back...COYS
DaSPURS
Have to agree...Bony does look a fine striker. Very strong, capable of getting a shot off from anywhere and links play well. Kind of happy we met Swansea without the pairing of Michu and Bony together. Think they could have an awesome partnership there. Go on Swans, smash the clubs ahead of us.
Cider spurs
OX - the City game is not until Wednesday week, so that gives the squad both valuable recovery and training time. It would be tough on Bentaleb but I'd rather have Paulinho and Sandro in for him and Chadli with Verts in for Vlad.
Love totty
No substitute for experience, just shows a manager without actual management experience but with a a lifetime of premier league experience completely outperforms a guy who's got experience in everything other than the actual experience required to succeed in the premier league. I would let Benteleb sit the next one out, good player but we'll need someone with more influence in the middle either physically or technically
coys1717
Early days imo. These games we should have won with this squad of players, even Swansea, they have lost last seven. Come on - this season our aim was to win these games and start to take points of the big teams, Utd, Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool, City and the teams that are good, Everton, Newcastle. Under Tim we have taken points from Utd who imo are struggling more than us, nothing has been proved yet imo. Why do fans get carried away so soon. With City form away I would still expect us to give them a good game, lets see what Tim can get us away to the big clubs and see if he can get us points at home to these clubs then we can see how he fairs.

he has not been tested yet imo and the strength of a manager is how they deal with pressure, whether that is pressure of relegation, pressure of getting top four, pressure of pulling themselves out of a bad run, pressure from the media and so forth. i am not getting carried away but credit where it is due, he has done alright. Still glaring problems imo in the middle of the pitch which shows me the balance there is not good enough, is that because of the partnership, or the lack of a real DM player. For thirty minutes Swansea came straight through and were taking shots for fun, against City we will be punished and again yesterday we were lucky not to be.

Without that protection the defense looks weak, again against better teams we will be punished. Will Tim be flexible enough to change it and drop his favourite player, Bentaleb, this is when we see whether a manager is going to cut it, do what is best for the club and not get hooked on playing a certain favourite, make those bold decisions.

It is hard to drop a player if they are doing ok and we are winning but sometimes you have to when the opposition is more fearsome and City will be, so lets see how Tim deals with it and if we get run over in midfield again and he doesn't change it then will start to see his weaknesses, which imo is a pet hate of mine with managers, those that will just not drop a player because they have something to prove, or they just have a favourite player and can't see clearly, bit like a love affair lol.

The best managers are those who drop players for the benfit of the club and team regardless of their current form, price tag who how big they think they are, Mourinho, Fergie both did that, we always have managers that are spineless when it comes to such matters.
WorldPeace
Totty, to me somehow we need to find a way out for Daws, can you imagine him against Aguero?
tophobunty1882
oh worldpeace,, "these game we should have won"....I was gangfested for 36 hours hours a few weeks back for suggesting this when AVB was manager....corrr mate, lets see if you get waterboarded for it.
tophobunty1882
I know what you mean, Topho, but we'll need him against their Beast Negredo. Maybe Vlad will be mobile enough for Aguero.
Love totty
If Sandro is fully fit to play then he replaces Bentaleb for certain. No Question. It will be some time before we see Paulinho. Again Verts in for Daws would be my call but I think TS will replace Keereekesh. Apart from that I don't see any other changes from Swansea game.

Prem games to date 16pts from a possible 18, 5 wins and a draw impressive. OK we lost our capital one cup game to wet spam, but then again we lost our home prem fixture to them under AVB and considering wet spam have only won 4 prem games Cardiff twice, Fulham and Us, they are not that good, watched them vs Newcastle. The approach to LVG, well at least his honest in his reply ''However Tottenham appointed Tim Sherwood as their new boss, and Van Gaal has confirmed to Sky Sports News that although they held talks he rejected it in order to concentrate on the Netherlands job. He does not rule out a possible move in the future'' So the baton was handed over to Tim, and his after match interviews are excellent, honest and to the point in question, his given players the freedom to play, 45 minutes of calamity jane vs Palace and a large rocket up the proverbial at half time, things soon turned around. Eriksen is a player I like a lot and I was pleased when we signed him, his starting to show what his about and you have to remember his only 21, his tag that came with him was ''one of the best dead ball takers in europe'' his performance for Ajax vs Man City, single handily he destroyed them (a repeat on the 29th) would be a result. Ade, well this man is on fire, Bentaleb doing very well. But it's Tim the manager or head coach, what ever his title is, we all enjoy it when we are winning, because that's the only thing that matters, I've always said every win is a bonus, how will it all end, who knows. As Tim points out if the season ended right now, we would be 5th and the chairman would not be happy, if we do get into the top 4, he will be hailed as the best thing since sliced bread and rightly so, but the summer will come and you can just see the headlines ''Sherwood for England'' because they will be on the plane home and Woy will be hounded by the press, takes it off our summer transfers I suppose. But that's all for the future, lets just enjoy the ride and scream if you wanna go faster.

Did anyone else see the Morinho interview yesterday. He said that, something along the lines of, he told all his players that they mean nothing compared to the club. The club is everything. That's how he manages and can drop any player. Because of who he is the players accept it and tuff it out. Could you imagine Sherwood trying that approach and saying that to our star players. There would certainly be a big rush for the way out.
longtimespur
Wp ...I usually agree with your posts but as far as "games we should win", there are no such games in the PL. Every team can manage to draw with or beat any other team. No team goes through the season without dropping a point and even the top sides can lose points against a well organised lower team.
longtimespur
WorldPeace...REF: Bentaleb. I posted this on another article this morning. Maybe a justified favourite no?..Only half heard the snippet on SSN just now. Think they said Bentaleb made 10 tackles yesterday. Most on the pitch, and the 3rd highest of any player in any prem match this season. If i did indeed hear this correctly, then boy, what a player. He really does just go about his business, and if those stats are indeed true, add to this his pass completion and the number of passes, what a talent we have. Handful of games and already 3rd in tackle per game stakes, and he looked so comfortable. Could have one scary player on our hands. What a dilemna, Sandro and Betaleb, Paulinho, Dembele, Capoue. So many options.
Cider spurs
longtime ... I agree. There are no certain wins in the Pl. Every team is good on their day and there are so many variables that can affect the outcome of any one game. You could say that some games would be harder than others, but none of them are easy. We see this every week.
Geofspurs
Cider ... I can't remember another youngster having such a brilliant introduction to the PL. Hope he is managed correctly, but he should be if Sherwood knows him as well as he thinks he does. I think he should be on the bench against City as we'll need a tougher and more experienced MF, but that should not worry Bentaleb as he now knows he is part of the bigger picture.
Geofspurs
The nationality of a coach is irrelevant. The only thing which matters is their talent and the support they receive from the people who employ them. So far Sherwood has done very well in the Premiership, and if he continues to play yesterdays formation instead of the old school 4-4-2 he has played previously, we could seriously make top 4 and go far in the Europa... But there is one other key factor, which is the board and how they support Sherwood's project. Already the Europa League squad has been made much weaker with the sale of Defoe (the leading goal scorer in the competition), and if other players are moved on as Tim has hinted will happen we will struggle. Bentaleb has been superb but cant continue to play virtually every minute of every game which is why it would be a disaster if Levy cashes in on Étienne Capoue. We will find out over the next 11 days if Danny Boy hinders further Sherwoods ambitions, or helps his chances of success this season???
Pele10
Totty, we may still have no choice in this one than to go with the same pair. But i still have nightmares of what their beats did to Dawson in the 6-0 game on the edge of the box for one of his goals. To me there are too many examples of Dawson being made to look average. I guess most on here might agree he is 4th best and would not be playing but for injuries.
tophobunty1882
Pele, good post, i am not sure the fact Defoe is leading scorer in the first round of the spoon has much baring on the next round, you might have been leading scorer against the dross we played in the groupie stage. We will be weaker without defoe if he is not replaced by someone external or internally who helps makes the team better. Evidence is we are scoring more now than before and he was an option then. You know as well as anyone its not only about the players but how you play them, at the moment they are playing better as a team than they were. rude awakening comes wednesday week, if we lose I wont be jumping on Sherwood or Levy because I expect us to lose and hope we draw or win this one. Your last line, I guess it means we buy to improve in the window, yes to that if we can, but buying for the sake of buying ie august gets to going round in ever decreasing circles often. Intent was there but the plan was flawed.
tophobunty1882
ps ref Bentelab v Capoue Pele...If bentelab is replaced to add steel then 99% it will be Sandro if both he and Capoue were fit. therefore i dont but this B V C bollox. I would not sell Capoue and would play him in quite a few games if Sandro was not fit.

Will Capoue be happy to sit as third choice for the DM position if Sandro comes back and Bentaleb continues his fine form? I llike the look of capoue and he offers good cover in seeral posityions without excelling in any of them, I'd keep him and move Siggy and Holtby on quicker but he needs to understand his role in the club and the squad.
Slurms McKenzie
Sorry folks, but I'll repeat this for those that always say we're only beating teams below us, so why make a fuss: In between thrashing Norwich 7-0 and Spurs 6, City lost 1-0 to Sunderland! It's the PL and it happens. That's why players from all over the world come to play in it.

LATEST NEWS; Super Eagles defensive midfielder, Gabriel Reuben has been handed a trial at White Hart Lane with Tottenham Hotspurs, following the termination of his contract at Scottish side, Kilmarnock. The former Kano Pillars ace left Scotland, following a series of disputes with the Scottish Premier League club. It is understood that Reuben, 23, has been invited to train with London side. That's the report I found, and included a you tube on him, reminds me of Zakora, very athletic, strange how he never made it in scotland, he looks a powerful player and plays the ball to feet and keeps it simple, has a shot on him. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UoiBm4NonJk The 23 year-old helped Nigeria qualify for this summer’s World Cup and is expected to be part of their squad for the tournament in Brazil.

IF sandro is fit though I could see TS making a bold move and playing him alongside Bentaleb with Dembele sitting on the bench. This might be the way forward as Dembele is still guilty of slowing down our play. The only way we will get anything out of the city game is to hit them on the break. Id go with the same team as Swansea but swap Sandro for Dembele and Townsend for Chadli. Oh…and Lamela on the bench instaed of Siggy!!!!
hudderspur
The one player that you could honestly say could have no complaints if had to sit the next game out would be Dawson. He clearly gave a stone wall penalty and got away with it. He charged out like a headless chicken only to see Chiriches calmly deal with it after they could have had 2 clear through on Lloris. He was all over the place for the goal as well and didn't shut the space quick enough. If TS dropped Chiriches it would be a travesty in my opinion but I can see the logic for bringing back Vertonghen. With Kaboul, I think he needs to strong some games together in the U21's and prove he can be relied upon.

In many ways it would be tough to drop Bentaleb, Eriksen or Dembele but I can see the logic for wanting Sandro in there if fit. Perhaps the option is play Eriksen in Chadli's place. We have 2 very left footed players in Bentaleb and Dembele and Rose bombing on so we can get away with that and still keep the formation.

Nice article Ox. The worst thing Spurs can do is over analyse TS's management at this stage. We should just enjoy it regardless of who he picks.
muttley
Certainly can't argue with Sherwood's start given its the best start of any Spurs manager. Well done everyone and keep it going! Great to see us back up there challenging - with some quality still to return. You have to hope that our superior depth of squad can out-gun Pool (a Suarez injury away from being nothing) and Everton. Man U will still come again - especially when they get Rooney and RVP back. Anyway, its looking good again. Really looking forward to the City game as we are right up there and also would be nice to get revenge for the Ethiad. I think Sherwood will go all guns blazing which might not be a bad thing against their perhaps suspect mentality away from home.
StillRickyVilla
Hudderspur with a fit Sandro, Paulinhio, Dembele, Bentaleb, Capoue and Holtby we are slightly overloaded in the middle of the park. You can see the logic in looking to move on either of Holtby or Capoue especially as Bentaleb is showing us why either Capoue or Holtby are going to have very limited game time!
Slurms McKenzie
Worldpeace, as always you make some valid points. If we discount getting knocked out of two cup competitions Sherwood has done amazingly well in the league but let's wait till the end of the season before we hail him as the new messiah. We have had a run of games playing teams struggling for points but as they say you can only beat what is in front of you of we have certainly have done that with aplomb but being outplayed for large chunks by the likes of WBA and Crystal Palace shows there is still work to be done, if we finish in the top four that will be a massive achievement and Sherwood will deserve all the credit he will get. COYS.
ItalianYiddo
Lads anything we get out of the City game will be a bonus, if we come away with our very small goal difference gettign a hammering it will eb a good result, we were still exposed yesterday by a team who liek to keep the ball and knock it around in front of the opposition, City are far more direct with pace and power and guile. Although we are improving we are no where near City's level yet and I can't see anything other then a City win when we play them. What I'll be looking for is a battling performance where we play as a team and eliminate the silly mistakes, if city do win I want them to earn those three points and know that they had a real test against us. Thats my base line if Tim can do that as a minimum agaisnt City then I for one will be happy and look forward to teh next game with enthusiasm- plan for the worse and hope for the best

Topho, I'm warming to your opinion of Siggy, not neccessarily crap but certainly we can do better. Not sure of Holtby as a game changer. He is a trier and a terrier but I still feel he's more suited to cup games and coming on as a sub to help close down games. Capoue has not been the same since the injury.

Pele10 if we buy in this window it has to be a game changer, big time LB or big time Striker, no stop gaps. That's why I don't believe we'll do business this window. Problem is if we lose Ade or Soldado to a long injury we will be in trouble. If I was Levy I would try of Benteke and if that failed I would make Swansea an offer they couldn't refuse for Bony. The guy is a monster and has the desire we need. I found he was really getting frustrated yesterday because of the play around him.

Worldpeace I agree that the art of good squad management is playing those players that are not only in form and who are fit, but also for the occasion. But are you suggesting that Bentelab is a "pet" of TS and will play regardless? You and I do not see one iota of what goes on at the training sessions. Give him credit - he will pick who he sees is the best for the occasion, direct the formation how he sees is right for the occasion, and prepare the squad for the occasion. To coin a phrase, no player is bigger than the club, and if the likes of Bentelab are in form and doing the business on the training field then they should be given thought for inclusion. Yes Sandro is needed if fit against MC and therefore it is possibly Dembele who should be looking over his shoulder at Bentelab, as I see much more competition there than with Sandro.
maccaspur
gotta agree with maccaspur on that one.
Slurms McKenzie
I think you have to consider that although Sandro would probably be the best choice against City when fit AND in top form, he probably is not the right choice against City as it is. I cannot see TS making any changes to the one that played Swansea. It may or may not be enough against a devastating City attack, but imo probably be our best bet. The key to having a good game against City is having a good game defensively as a team. Easier said than done but i am sure we can get a couple of goals against them.

Topho I see your stub hub post, in case you don't know there are some seats going for less than face value for City at the moment, it looks like if used cleverly it can be good for members...
T.H.F.Chris
Asher did you notice how in the first half we defended as 2 banks of 4 and Swansea were restricted to long shots. As i said on another thread, you simply cannot account for long shots in tactics. We are already showing better defensive nous. However if Verts is back I will be much happier, although have Verts and Chiriches the understanding together for such a big match? This is where the training ground comes into it's own for a nice long preparation. I still believe it may be Bentelab Sandro, Lennon, Eriksson and Sigy in MF. How far away is Pauli?
maccaspur
maccaspur, i think that is too many changes to the team. We all know TS is capable of a gamble but i cannot see it happening. I have no idea when Paulinho is back. He is probably the one player i would have no problem bringing straight back in. I wouldn't be at all surprised to see Siggy come in for Chadli but doubt TS will do it. I have never been a massive fan of Daws. I look forward to Chiriches and Verts playing together in the future. I think it would be wrong to drop daws for Verts against City. We need to offer a threat going forward. We will have an extra man in midfield, we need to use that advantage to defend properly as a team. Most importantly though is the timing of our attacks. We have to be able to get players forward.
asherthesmasher
DEMBELE!!
willfry
I'm just glad of the prep time. Big bonus.
maccaspur
What about him Willfry?
maccaspur
Fair question Macca!
Slurms McKenzie
Think Sherwood is doing a fantastic job at Spurs and its great that the players seem happier when playing.
Think the 1 up top should be the way to go against city to avoid being punished like the Arsenal game. Also hoping Sandro is back for the City game since I think Bentaleb might struggle against the likes of yaya and co.

Still think we need a left back brought in pronto as Rose just doesn't quite cut it at the moment and would hate to see Vertonghen playing there again. My suggestion is Newcastle's Davide Santon.
Rapm
Also Townsend over Chadli from now on. Chadli was *****e!
Rapm
Rapm LB would be the top priorty, Rose as back up for the left flank LB/LWB/LW with another LB startign and Townsend on the LW
Slurms McKenzie
Chadli to be given time to settle in and find his best position I think its fair to say that it probably would be on the left wing!
Slurms McKenzie
Rapm Verts wont be played at LB under TS I'm sure.
maccaspur
With the current Media hype you would have thought Chadli would work his ********* off in the last game but seems very lacking. The only thing I see high offering is his height.

Also I think another right back is just as high a priority as left back at the moment.
Rapm
Let`s not go sucking eachothers dicks just yet.
Tim has done a great job no question, far better than i anticipated so well done, but football is all about achieving targets. All about top 4 & going out of the domestic cups means that we can focus on that & see going out in such bad style as a blessing in disguise.Europa is a bonus, top 4 is the one.
If Timmy boy gets top 4 he`s a hero & will be rightly commended. We`ve been here before & blew it,so we will all go into the run in a little cautious,Spurs fans 10 times bitten,20 times shy.
He`s got my full backing & hope he does well & hope he`s the real deal & not the usual honeymoon, new manager syndrome period then implode.

rovinella62spurs
Shed i am not sure 4th gets him the job if Van Gaal wants it in the summer. i would suggest 8th in the context of a first time manager would be better than where we were before he took over, i.e. 9th. and that would be fair to him especially in the eyes of the AVB supporters club on here and said it was madness to replace AVB with a novice half way through the season. I would say they should agree 8th on that basis is success for the novice, bet they wont, what do you think?
tophobunty1882
Santa Mazola is at it this time, I think the girl in the middle wrote it for him, his not that clever, remember this post, at the end of the season, it might just be "Wonderful scenes at the Etihad…" http://www.givemesport.com/421692-arsenal-stars-mock-st-tottenham-in-twitter-pic?autoplay=on http://www.givemesport.com/421692-arsenal-stars-mock-st-tottenham-in-twitter-pic?autoplay=on http://www.givemesport.com/421692-arsenal-stars-mock-st-tottenham-in-twitter-pic?autoplay=on
spu 4 life
Having been a spurs supporter for such a long time, our next game is a double-edged sword, always, always wanting spurs to win, but should Man City beat us and take all three points, as hard as it will be, I won't be to upset, because at the end of the season, if Man City lost the league by 3pts and it's our fault those scum bags down the road win the league I would be gutted even more, that plays two ways I know, we could miss CL football by 3pts. What a horrible thought, The Scum winning the league.
spu 4 life
I'll say this without a doubt in my head: The Gooners will not win the PL this year.
MAN ON!
I'm firmly in the middle for now. 16 points from 18 is a good return but four of those teams are in and around the relegation spots, whilst the other two were mid table so we can't get carried away. The good is that we are scoring goals, averaging over two per game. The bad is that our defence looks vulnerable and over exposed. Not sure what the deal with Capoue is, I'd have rather seen more of him. If Tim doesn't pay Sandro once fit either then I will be getting worried.
Kes80
Kes, nobody wanted Sherwood, he has no experience but we have him, if he gets 8th I would say he has done ok, in the context of comparing him to what we had before. I want more of course and this squad deserves and should achieve more, but to be fair to him if he does better with the second half of the season than the other guy did with the first then i would find it hard to complain about him...
tophobunty1882
MAN ON! Why are you so sure gooners wont win PL?. Hope you are right though.
Thats Entertainment
Rapm - not sure why you see Right back as a priority buy. Obviously we have Walker & Naughton is excellent there - just not played there much, but his natural position. We then have a great young talent in Smith & if fit & if needed, Kaboul has played well there. Right Back would be nowhere near a priority for me.
Windlespur
Thats Entertainment….. I feel it in my Lilywhite bones.
MAN ON!
topho - I'd hope for better than 8th but I do get where you're coming from. I certainly won't have my knives out if we lose to Citeh. I want nothing more than for Sherwood to be a success. I don't want to see yet another manager exit via the revolving door. We need some stability and I hope Tim blows us all away. I guess what I'm saying is it's too early to judge really.
Kes80
Agree Windle, RB not a biggie at the moment. I rate Walker myself, not by any means the finished article but I can see improvement in his game.
Kes80
MAN ON! I'll drink to that.
Thats Entertainment
Only problem with RB is that there will probably be some big clubs coming in for Walker, possibly one or two mid table championship clubs coming in for our LB.
matt hoten
longtimespur-I know what you mean and to a degree I agree, but I still think we should be saying to our self these games should be winnable, although it doesn't always work out that way, especially these days. However, I am just trying to point out that we have to have a bench mark, build on previous seasons and so I feel these games should be winnable and then we improve on our performances against the 'so called' bigger teams, but I am happy to hear what your saying.

Cider spurs-good statistics, yes he is doing well, impressive by all accounts but I still see we are weak in the middle, I think I did say was it the 'partnership' may be it is Dembele, not doing enough, or Eriksen free role. I just feel every game we have seemed weak in midfield and with Swansea it showed, they were getting through taking shots for fun in the first half hour. If that was City I feel we would have been punished, just the same with Palace, so I feel there has to be some change in midfield for City and fiture games unless the personnel who are playing at the moment improve. If bentaleb is doing his share then we need to look at the partnerships and the other midfield players then because we have been lucky imo.
WorldPeace
Well, so far Tim is definitely going about the right way in earning his Spurs!. From being appoinedt (a unanimous wtf), to a steady start (on the fence) to a commendable run of results (a 70/30 swing For), I believe if we win against City then 80/20 beckons and he can keeo climbing the Richta scale.

I think Tim has surprised MOST with his selections/formations. Most expected the same 11 (as per against Palace) to start against Swansea. To the delight of many, he changed the formation. Out counter attacks were again a joy to watch. Now most expect the same 11 to start against City and I think we are in for another tactical surprise. As for some peeps talking about ‘favourite’ players, I don’t think we need to worry about that. Soladado on bench against Swansea was a good example.

Finally, I think getting the ‘old’ Ade back has had an even BIGGER impact than TS. In his current form and desire, he IS the missing LEADER that we yearned for. Hope he maintains that level. COYS!
Critical_Spur
Good article. Proud to say I supported Tim from the off. Mind you, I would've welcomed Dot Cotton to replace Andre. He's highly regarded and after seeing his first interview as interim manager I could see why. Being a new role and without badges it was always going to be a risk and if we lose against City and the game after, he'll have us all thinking again. For now, he seems to have lots of traits you'd think were essential, regarding character, management, the non-footballing traits. Maybe todays question is not 'Will he be here in August?', but 'How long can we keep him?' Fingers crossed he's the real deal.
jerkinmahjurgen
Topho, 8th will cost TS his job. He was offered the job before AVB was appointed but refused as he said he wasn't ready. By accepting this time round he is saying he is now ready. Our target is top 4, fail to deliver = failure.

TS is doing extremely well in the league and his only blip to me is West Ham in the cup as winning at the Emirates isn't something we often do. City will be a true test and defeat isn't a disaster although 5-0 would be. We have some momentum which gives the players/teams confidence. It will also be interesting to see how Tim works when all players are fit as on paper we have at least 4 players to come into the starting line up, how will he handle that? Sometimes it's easier to manage when some of your decisions are forced or easier to make. Saying that I'm 100% behind TS. Lastly I don't think any players returning from injury will go direct into the starting 11 as against City we'll need to be at our best, which means players that have match fitness/sharpness outway better players on paper.
yiddyboy
Have to laugh at tophos not so subtle attempts to dredge up the pro AVB v anti AVB argument. Boring on here with spurs winning and everyone getting behind sherwood eh topho?
StillRickyVilla
I don't think managers get sacked for finishing outside top4. Everyone, Levy included, knows the competition is immense. AVB nor Redknapp. Whether we're going in the right direction despite missing out is the more likely criteria.
jerkinmahjurgen
Phew, Everton draw!
Critical_Spur
Everton drop points, now we are joint fourth official.

City have two games this coming week, we have ten days off, hope the lads get some good training in and City get knackered. Strange playing Wednesday night and nothing at the weekend.

Thought Everton were average tonight and WBA played safe and went for it in the end, Brunt put in loads of crosses, they just didn't get on the end of them otherwise it could have been a WBA win.
WorldPeace
It's so unpredictable again this season. I still think Utd could make a late run for a top four, if they get Rooney and RVP fit and on the pitch and get a couple of decent signings this month. It's so tight

Boing boing! Great round for us! COYS!!!

Kes that's all very fair........matt Hoten and 3 northern premier clubs in for Siggy.....Critical, yes to your description of Ade factor and how bad does that make AVB look?.......yiddy I know 8th will cost TS his job, that was not the point, you missed it, others didnt.....SRV he has been sacked, he has gone............if you want to fill his poster over your bed with the fountain of youth every night please continue, but he has gone that fffffffffff. I love siggy and townsend is *****e.
StillRickyVilla
yiddyboy, ps Tim Sherwood was NOT offered the job before AVB was appointed, who told you that?
tophobunty1882
SRV. I think you are making yourself look a little silly now. Can you explain for all to see why you love Siggy and think Townsend is not very good, base it on this season as Townsend didnt play for us last season.
tophobunty1882
SRV you don't like me (well my user name) and it causes you to forget rationality and the fact that you like spurs. You are not alone on here.
tophobunty1882
Sorry just messing.
StillRickyVilla
WP, City dont have two games, they are 6-0 up at half time against west ham...........SRV put it away, it's hard to clean that mess. I still admire your conviction over AVB to stick with what you believe....genuinely......
tophobunty1882
Far too premature on Sherwood. He does have the advantage now of being able to concentrate on the league. Like it or not the previous manager rotated the squad frequently, this leaves Sherwood with players not over-used (Dawson and Walker the exceptions) so he can and should pick a settled side (with a few tweaks) to the end of the season. We don’t have world class players but we have the 3rd or 4th strongest squad in the league and this should count against the likes of Everton and Liverpool in the run in.
matt hoten
Naughton and Holtby plus a little luna gets Benteke, probs is I dont want Naughton to go....
tophobunty1882
matt like it or not the previous manager played too many of the 1st team squad against barnstoneworth united in the thursday sppon pre qualifying around the world in 80 days group stage. and believe or not TS took over, or soon after, with 11 squad members injured. matt he has gone.......let go.........
tophobunty1882
Topho I have moved on its u who keep referring to the previous manager in every post. Ive thoroughly enjoyed Sherwoods start. Early days tho lets hope it continues. Great draw tonight for us with mersey derby to come. A lot depends on whether United get there act together or not. As always, to get top 4 u need one of city, chelsea, man u or arse to have a stinker of a season
StillRickyVilla
Danny Rose made Garth Crooks' team of the week and got a match rating of 7 in the Daily Mail. Did I miss something? I thought his positioning was awful and temperament suspect. Sure he got a good assist but I can't think of much else in the "good" column. 5/10 from me.
Kes80
On another note Physio Room has all six of our injured players listed as due back on 29th Jan (Citeh game) Interesting!
Kes80
Here's a thought I had in my dreams ... If we win our next 3 games we would be so close to third and within touching distance of top ... because the other teams play each other. Back to sleep; I like this dream!
Geofspurs
jerkinmahjurgen TS has already stated categorically that there has been NO change in the end of season target, and that is to finish in the top four. He has said that is the main aim. So who are we to disagree with him. Also the players themselves are coming out with it, that we can finish in the top four, and I really do not see any reason why we shouldn't. A couple of slip ups by Chelski and the Bindippers and a continuation of this good run and we are there. So why not say we are in with a chance, because we are in with one hell of a chance. It's just up to the players to show their worth and grab that chance.
chrishove123
chris ... I think we both just said the same thing in a different way!
Geofspurs
So, Everton & Liverpool drop points. And next week, when we play City, they play each other. As long as we dont suffer another humiliation, I am fine it.

City are simply too good. The best we can hope is a draw IMO. I simply cant see how Dawson-Chiriches can keep Aguero & Negredo quiet. Atleast I hope we dont start the game like we did at Etihad.

If we can get somehow ahead of them, then we have a chance of getting something. City have always played with restraint till they get their first goal. Once theri 1st goal goes in, all shackles are off & they batter teams. Hopefully, we can keep them quiet as long as possible.

If we can get a favourable result, next week could be good week. If Cardiff can nick some points at OT that would be beautiful as well.

Good thing is, by scoring 16 points of 18 in last 6 games, we have put ourselves in a excellent position.
sydqcb5
Liverpool v Everton game - conventional wisdomw says we would want to see a draw. But I hope atleast one of the team loose & loose badly. Such kind of derby loss always sets team backwards especially when they fight for same spot. Deja vu anyone??? I hope Liverpool goes down-who knows the deluded Liverpudlians could turn on Rodgers... Draw in that game, while in short term is good, but in long term not a great result for us. I would rather want us fight one of those 2 teams than both. Given we have inferiror GD, we need to one of those 2 teams to drop off completly.
sydqcb5
sydqcb5 ... I think we need to hold out for the first 20 minutes as I expect them to explode from the blocks. It could be a bit like Swansea, only a lot tougher. If we keep them out until we get our game going we could get something from the game. Realistically, I can take a loss, I would be happy with a draw, I'd find a win quite comfortable!!! But, it's football. Anything could happen. that's why it's so great!
Geofspurs
syd ... Don't agree re Pool/Everton game. I'd prefer a draw. If we could get ahead of both of them it would be a major incentive and confidence-booster for our players and would have to increase self-belief and belief in the team. If we are to end up in the top 4 it would probably be at the expense of both these teams anyway. We can't do much about our goal difference, which could prove fatal in the end ... or maybe Ade can!!
Geofspurs
Seems a shame to get back to a +3 goal difference and then play City :-)
muttley
Yeah, I am hoping for a draw too. Either that or Everton win. I see Liverpool as more of a threat ultimately. Geofspurs, I'd be very comfortable with a win next week too. lol
Madaboutspurs
Just hope this site does not beat up Sherwood or the players if we lose. Something to do with realistic expectations! Mind you ... 3-0 to Spurs!
Geofspurs
Just read on newsnow that Ossie Ardiles was involved in a serious car accident in the Falkland Islands. Hope he is ok. He is part of the reason why I support SPURS.
Madaboutspurs
Geofspurs, the realist in us will not be shocked if we lose next week. But anything can happen. It's 11 versus 11. Well, if our crowd start booing then maybe we are at a disadvantage again, being at home and all. Strange that.
Madaboutspurs
Mad, see I saw the report couple of hours back. Looks like Ossie was driving & Ricky Villa was also in the car. They were doing a ESPN documentary for world cup.According to the report, Ossie tried to avoid a sheep in the road & lost control & car got overturned. He was then airlifted to hospital. Initial reports are both are safe but they are not confirmed though.
sydqcb5
Mad, regarding City game - lets not forget the entire humiliation started with a poor 13 seconds goal conceded from Lloris kick. After that happened, disaster was inevitable as we got very nervous & our players simply gave up. We do not know how competitive we could have been if that had not happened.
sydqcb5
geof- it won't be about if we win or lose but the manner of the game....imo the last city game they were ruthless and punished every mistake we made...but we were not that poor and recovered after going a goal down until the second mistake....the Arse game was worse, we were completely outplayed, had they been as ruthless as city in front of goal it would have been a cricket score....get the performance right, that's the main thing...
shedboy2
Shedboy I agree with you there, I will be looking for a performance from Spurs and not nessecarily the result. I don't expect to get anything out of the game but would like to be pleasantly surprised. What I do want to see is a solid defensive performance, no suicidal mistakes and City put to the pin of their collar if they are to get the win. If at the end of the game we loose but I feel that City were made earn their victory then I'll take that and be content to focus on the next game and get back to winning ways.
Slurms McKenzie
Topho - I have a very reliable source that informed me Sherwood refused the position before AVB was appointed. You choice is you believe me or not.
yiddyboy
yiddyboy You`d have to be very gullible to believe that bollox.
Fanny adams
Chris, I'm not saying we can't finish top4. We're still within shot of the league - certainly if we beat City, we'll be right in the mix. You know that we're one of six clubs all believing it's the absolute minimum, and the likes of Everton hopeful as well. 2 of those 6 won't make it. Harry didn't get sacked for finishing 5th and neither did AVB. If we're going in the right direction and showing promise... It's not a given that it'll cost Tim his job if we don't make it. Our last two managers are proof, as was Jol before them. Our aim is still top4. Would be ridiculous to suggest otherwise when we're 3 games from top. On the plus side we've only just hit form. The flip side is the top3 are becoming relentless. Chances are at least one of them will keep it up. But look at the league this season? They could ALL slip up. It should all [winners/top4] go down to the wire, and when it's that close... if it's that close, the man who's 5th - Moyes/Rogers/Tim, won't walk.
jerkinmahjurgen
I did hear that, too. Is it that questionable? Tim was mooted as a possible successor to Redknapp, and that was at least 2yrs ago, probably more 3. However, my source was probably newspaper or blogging, so not always reliable. I know The Redknapps' and Tim quite well - we all hang out - but they don't tell me anything. VVankers.
