Tim Sherwood: The Best of British!

Tim Sherwood: The Best of British!

For someone who is still rated by many as merely keeping the hot seat warm for a bigger, but not necessarily better name, Tim Sherwood seems to be doing quite well. Well from my perspective, I have to feel a certain smugness that my desire to see him given the job, seems to be well founded, for now at least. I had a "debate' in the pub, last week over Sherwood/AVB and even in ignoring the positive results and seemingly bigger smiles on the players faces, I asked the other chaps to name me one player that had actually improved under AVB during his time at the club? I dismiss Bale as a freak of nature, that would have improved, if myself and Coopsie were running the show. Under Sherwood, we have not only seen the re-emergence of Adebayor, but also seen Eriksen improve, game upon game and of course who would have seen the selection and success of Nabil Bentaleb?

Of course Tim isn`t yet at legendary status and though he subtly claims he is still fighting to get the job, long term and needs a top four to get it, I wonder if it is more about his vision, fan, media and of course sponsor confidence, whilst is a narrow sixth place, in a really strong finish really a reason to dispense with a man that might just have something going, if given more time and resources to slightly reshape and reinvigorate a squad that was built for someone else? I always feel any manager needs a summer and good pre season to get his methods across. Sherwood may well have the advantage of knowing the players, the club and staff, but he isn`t coming in from that position of strength and fan blind support, that an established name might have expected.

Sherwood, effectively has to win over everyone connected to the club and prove he has the tactical and man management skills to take on the role and though he perha[s still base some way to go, I have to say I am feeling good about supporting my team again and enjoying the football, even though it isn`t quite to the level and quality I hope it will be. Lets see improvements from bringing back some big players, lets see the improvement from work on the training ground and lets see the benefits from a manager that knows he has the chance to build for the longer term, as opposed to having to work for the short one, just to keep his job. I think they dally it stability and the confidence that brings. Sure we need to be winning games, but I also believe that with confidence and backing from the board, players, fans and media, Tim will feel justified in his decisions and confident that one bad result or mistake, wont put him back to being seen as the short term solution.

Now, I am not sure whether yesterdays change in formation was tactical or that Soldado was still carrying a slight knock, but it shows that he is not afraid to "rest" big money players and also it gives Soldado a real problem in getting his place back. Perhaps against City, it is sensible to only play one striker, and if you had to pick a man to face City, it would have to be Ade, but is playing two, tactical suicide? Its a yes from me. He could have opted for Defoe, but was Swansea effectively a dress rehearsal for City? There might well be an argument to see Sandro, Townsend and Vertonghen next weekend, but I can see the the shape of the team being pretty much as we saw at the weekend. Is this another indication that we are developing the team, looking at the opposition and generally being a little more clever and tactically aware than some would like to portray him?

It is still early days, but the fact I see players enjoying themselves, the team playing better and more attractive football and individual improvements, I have to give praise to Tim Sherwood and his team. We might not get a top four place, but lets also accept that the competition has never been tougher. Just ask David Moyes!

Barton's comments could equally well apply to Rodgers at Liverpool. There has been a perception in recent years that all foreign managers are wonderful and all British managers are rubbish, at some point the pendulum must start swinging the other way. So far its hard to see what Tim could have done better. He's won the league games, when he's spoken he's talked sense and he was even honest enough to admit Swansea should have had a penalty.

Can i say i agree with the article and love the way we are playing, we are putting a good string of results together but, is it me but our defence over the last 4 games look very dodgy, not because of the two centre halfs but the protection they used to get, with better teams to play we will get beaten badley if we dont sort it out, coys

I think Sherwood got his formation spot on yesterday. Have to agree that this formation should yet again be utilised against City. Great to see the players actually appearing to enjoy their football once more. Allowance to express themselves and the trust in the sense that their natural ability should be released instead of harnessed by rigid formations. I posted late last week, if Sherwood continues impressing(he won't win them all) and the team are putting in the effort and we have a settled, happy camp. Would it not be wise to give him his final year, back him somewhat, and see where he can take us?. A settled, happy, hardworking squad is what's partly required. If Sherwood can continue with these elements, i'm happy to goalong for the ride and see where he takes us. At present, you can't really ask anymore of him. Well done!.

Completely agree Ox. One thing I didn't even realise under AVB was that I wasn't actually enjoying watching us play. Games were always drab affairs but under Tim it seems we have that spark back. Think Eriksen is a class act as well and will go on to be a very important player for us.

DaSPURS - exactly. That is what management is. To assess ALL the tools at your disposal and use them in the most optimal manner. With a minor tweak: Ade instead of Soldado/Defoe, AVB could still be in the job. But it wasn't just that - Eriksen has been totally cut free to run the show. Why restrict him...? AVB let Bale run free, why not Eriksen or Lamela?

Very good post and I agree with pretty much all of what you say. The switch to 4-3-3 was a good one for me, was chatting with my housemates when the teams came out, and we agreed that if it worked, it shows that Tim does have the tactical know how to help us progress, I thought that apart from the 1st 15mins, we were much the better side. They are 2 good options to have, we've shown we can win playing both formations now, and I feel we have players coming back that will suit both, namely Lamela, whom I am desperate to see become a success at the Lane! a 4-3-3 is his formation. We're quietly going about turning it around, and it wasn't even THAT bad before, sure, perfomances were not great but the league position was acceptable (just), we're now getting results & playing the football we all wanted to see.......just gotta keep our fingers crossed for a Pepe Mel masterclass tonight! If Sherwood's title is 'Head Coach', not, 'manager' ... does that suggest that he will have no say in who we buy and who we sell?! Because, if so, it seems likely that his future in terms of the first team, is only temporary? Unless, of course, we win the EL and finish in the top four.

Spot on and so are you, jod. I've always wondered what do foreign managers know about the British game and British players that British managers do not. And what can players from foreign leagues do that players from the Premiership or with Premiership experience cannot? Yet we seem to get caught time and again in this fetish/fashion of engaging fancy foreign managers and players. Did we not learn with Santini, Ramos and AVB that we are linked with Van Gaal, Hiddink and who knows who? One question though - why would playing two strikers against City be tactical suicide? They play with two from Aguero, Negredo and Dzeko after all. But I do think a defensive midfielder (Capoue or Sandro) is vital against them. We could even have Chiriches in the holding role if Vertonghen returns and Sandro is not 100%. As Newcastle have shown (with Cabaye), the way to make things difficult for City is try and match them with pace and power.

Gotta give Tim credit for his tactics against swansea. Lets hope he gets it right against City too. As well as Bentaleb has performed, i do feel we need a tougher CM for the city clash and Sandro has to play if fit. Ox, u mention the improvement of Erikssen, but what about Dembele. I think his last 2 games have been the best of the season for him. The defence: lets just hope Verts and Kaboul are fit soon cos Daws and Chiriches together worry me alot:)!

It is extremely hard to believe that these are the exact same players that were available to AVB, yet he didn't wanted to select many of the individuals that are shining now. The 433/451 system was deployed yesterday and my word doesn't Sherwood use it differently. I can honestly say I have fallen back in love with my old lover again. Spurs that is. In regards to the Citeh game, the same formation has to be applied but with slightly different personal. Having said that, people would suggest that Bentaleb should be dropped for Capoue but has his performances warranted him being dropped? Not for me. Dawson? Possibly. Chadli? But he needs the game time. Its a good conundrum to have especially when there is revenge at stake.

Have to agree...Bony does look a fine striker. Very strong, capable of getting a shot off from anywhere and links play well. Kind of happy we met Swansea without the pairing of Michu and Bony together. Think they could have an awesome partnership there. Go on Swans, smash the clubs ahead of us.

No substitute for experience, just shows a manager without actual management experience but with a a lifetime of premier league experience completely outperforms a guy who's got experience in everything other than the actual experience required to succeed in the premier league. I would let Benteleb sit the next one out, good player but we'll need someone with more influence in the middle either physically or technically

Early days imo. These games we should have won with this squad of players, even Swansea, they have lost last seven. Come on - this season our aim was to win these games and start to take points of the big teams, Utd, Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool, City and the teams that are good, Everton, Newcastle. Under Tim we have taken points from Utd who imo are struggling more than us, nothing has been proved yet imo. Why do fans get carried away so soon. With City form away I would still expect us to give them a good game, lets see what Tim can get us away to the big clubs and see if he can get us points at home to these clubs then we can see how he fairs.

he has not been tested yet imo and the strength of a manager is how they deal with pressure, whether that is pressure of relegation, pressure of getting top four, pressure of pulling themselves out of a bad run, pressure from the media and so forth. i am not getting carried away but credit where it is due, he has done alright. Still glaring problems imo in the middle of the pitch which shows me the balance there is not good enough, is that because of the partnership, or the lack of a real DM player. For thirty minutes Swansea came straight through and were taking shots for fun, against City we will be punished and again yesterday we were lucky not to be.

Without that protection the defense looks weak, again against better teams we will be punished. Will Tim be flexible enough to change it and drop his favourite player, Bentaleb, this is when we see whether a manager is going to cut it, do what is best for the club and not get hooked on playing a certain favourite, make those bold decisions.

It is hard to drop a player if they are doing ok and we are winning but sometimes you have to when the opposition is more fearsome and City will be, so lets see how Tim deals with it and if we get run over in midfield again and he doesn't change it then will start to see his weaknesses, which imo is a pet hate of mine with managers, those that will just not drop a player because they have something to prove, or they just have a favourite player and can't see clearly, bit like a love affair lol.

The best managers are those who drop players for the benfit of the club and team regardless of their current form, price tag who how big they think they are, Mourinho, Fergie both did that, we always have managers that are spineless when it comes to such matters.

Prem games to date 16pts from a possible 18, 5 wins and a draw impressive. OK we lost our capital one cup game to wet spam, but then again we lost our home prem fixture to them under AVB and considering wet spam have only won 4 prem games Cardiff twice, Fulham and Us, they are not that good, watched them vs Newcastle. The approach to LVG, well at least his honest in his reply ''However Tottenham appointed Tim Sherwood as their new boss, and Van Gaal has confirmed to Sky Sports News that although they held talks he rejected it in order to concentrate on the Netherlands job. He does not rule out a possible move in the future'' So the baton was handed over to Tim, and his after match interviews are excellent, honest and to the point in question, his given players the freedom to play, 45 minutes of calamity jane vs Palace and a large rocket up the proverbial at half time, things soon turned around. Eriksen is a player I like a lot and I was pleased when we signed him, his starting to show what his about and you have to remember his only 21, his tag that came with him was ''one of the best dead ball takers in europe'' his performance for Ajax vs Man City, single handily he destroyed them (a repeat on the 29th) would be a result. Ade, well this man is on fire, Bentaleb doing very well. But it's Tim the manager or head coach, what ever his title is, we all enjoy it when we are winning, because that's the only thing that matters, I've always said every win is a bonus, how will it all end, who knows. As Tim points out if the season ended right now, we would be 5th and the chairman would not be happy, if we do get into the top 4, he will be hailed as the best thing since sliced bread and rightly so, but the summer will come and you can just see the headlines ''Sherwood for England'' because they will be on the plane home and Woy will be hounded by the press, takes it off our summer transfers I suppose. But that's all for the future, lets just enjoy the ride and scream if you wanna go faster.

Did anyone else see the Morinho interview yesterday. He said that, something along the lines of, he told all his players that they mean nothing compared to the club. The club is everything. That's how he manages and can drop any player. Because of who he is the players accept it and tuff it out. Could you imagine Sherwood trying that approach and saying that to our star players. There would certainly be a big rush for the way out.

Wp ...I usually agree with your posts but as far as "games we should win", there are no such games in the PL. Every team can manage to draw with or beat any other team. No team goes through the season without dropping a point and even the top sides can lose points against a well organised lower team.

WorldPeace...REF: Bentaleb. I posted this on another article this morning. Maybe a justified favourite no?..Only half heard the snippet on SSN just now. Think they said Bentaleb made 10 tackles yesterday. Most on the pitch, and the 3rd highest of any player in any prem match this season. If i did indeed hear this correctly, then boy, what a player. He really does just go about his business, and if those stats are indeed true, add to this his pass completion and the number of passes, what a talent we have. Handful of games and already 3rd in tackle per game stakes, and he looked so comfortable. Could have one scary player on our hands. What a dilemna, Sandro and Betaleb, Paulinho, Dembele, Capoue. So many options.

longtime ... I agree. There are no certain wins in the Pl. Every team is good on their day and there are so many variables that can affect the outcome of any one game. You could say that some games would be harder than others, but none of them are easy. We see this every week.

Cider ... I can't remember another youngster having such a brilliant introduction to the PL. Hope he is managed correctly, but he should be if Sherwood knows him as well as he thinks he does. I think he should be on the bench against City as we'll need a tougher and more experienced MF, but that should not worry Bentaleb as he now knows he is part of the bigger picture.

The nationality of a coach is irrelevant. The only thing which matters is their talent and the support they receive from the people who employ them. So far Sherwood has done very well in the Premiership, and if he continues to play yesterdays formation instead of the old school 4-4-2 he has played previously, we could seriously make top 4 and go far in the Europa... But there is one other key factor, which is the board and how they support Sherwood's project. Already the Europa League squad has been made much weaker with the sale of Defoe (the leading goal scorer in the competition), and if other players are moved on as Tim has hinted will happen we will struggle. Bentaleb has been superb but cant continue to play virtually every minute of every game which is why it would be a disaster if Levy cashes in on Étienne Capoue. We will find out over the next 11 days if Danny Boy hinders further Sherwoods ambitions, or helps his chances of success this season???

Totty, we may still have no choice in this one than to go with the same pair. But i still have nightmares of what their beats did to Dawson in the 6-0 game on the edge of the box for one of his goals. To me there are too many examples of Dawson being made to look average. I guess most on here might agree he is 4th best and would not be playing but for injuries.

Pele, good post, i am not sure the fact Defoe is leading scorer in the first round of the spoon has much baring on the next round, you might have been leading scorer against the dross we played in the groupie stage. We will be weaker without defoe if he is not replaced by someone external or internally who helps makes the team better. Evidence is we are scoring more now than before and he was an option then. You know as well as anyone its not only about the players but how you play them, at the moment they are playing better as a team than they were. rude awakening comes wednesday week, if we lose I wont be jumping on Sherwood or Levy because I expect us to lose and hope we draw or win this one. Your last line, I guess it means we buy to improve in the window, yes to that if we can, but buying for the sake of buying ie august gets to going round in ever decreasing circles often. Intent was there but the plan was flawed.

LATEST NEWS; Super Eagles defensive midfielder, Gabriel Reuben has been handed a trial at White Hart Lane with Tottenham Hotspurs, following the termination of his contract at Scottish side, Kilmarnock. The former Kano Pillars ace left Scotland, following a series of disputes with the Scottish Premier League club. It is understood that Reuben, 23, has been invited to train with London side. That's the report I found, and included a you tube on him, reminds me of Zakora, very athletic, strange how he never made it in scotland, he looks a powerful player and plays the ball to feet and keeps it simple, has a shot on him. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UoiBm4NonJk The 23 year-old helped Nigeria qualify for this summer’s World Cup and is expected to be part of their squad for the tournament in Brazil.

The one player that you could honestly say could have no complaints if had to sit the next game out would be Dawson. He clearly gave a stone wall penalty and got away with it. He charged out like a headless chicken only to see Chiriches calmly deal with it after they could have had 2 clear through on Lloris. He was all over the place for the goal as well and didn't shut the space quick enough. If TS dropped Chiriches it would be a travesty in my opinion but I can see the logic for bringing back Vertonghen. With Kaboul, I think he needs to strong some games together in the U21's and prove he can be relied upon.

In many ways it would be tough to drop Bentaleb, Eriksen or Dembele but I can see the logic for wanting Sandro in there if fit. Perhaps the option is play Eriksen in Chadli's place. We have 2 very left footed players in Bentaleb and Dembele and Rose bombing on so we can get away with that and still keep the formation.

Nice article Ox. The worst thing Spurs can do is over analyse TS's management at this stage. We should just enjoy it regardless of who he picks.

Certainly can't argue with Sherwood's start given its the best start of any Spurs manager. Well done everyone and keep it going! Great to see us back up there challenging - with some quality still to return. You have to hope that our superior depth of squad can out-gun Pool (a Suarez injury away from being nothing) and Everton. Man U will still come again - especially when they get Rooney and RVP back. Anyway, its looking good again. Really looking forward to the City game as we are right up there and also would be nice to get revenge for the Ethiad. I think Sherwood will go all guns blazing which might not be a bad thing against their perhaps suspect mentality away from home.

Hudderspur with a fit Sandro, Paulinhio, Dembele, Bentaleb, Capoue and Holtby we are slightly overloaded in the middle of the park. Worldpeace, as always you make some valid points. If we discount getting knocked out of two cup competitions Sherwood has done amazingly well in the league but let's wait till the end of the season before we hail him as the new messiah. We have had a run of games playing teams struggling for points but as they say you can only beat what is in front of you of we have certainly have done that with aplomb but being outplayed for large chunks by the likes of WBA and Crystal Palace shows there is still work to be done, if we finish in the top four that will be a massive achievement and Sherwood will deserve all the credit he will get. Lads anything we get out of the City game will be a bonus, if we come away with our very small goal difference gettign a hammering it will eb a good result, we were still exposed yesterday by a team who liek to keep the ball and knock it around in front of the opposition, City are far more direct with pace and power and guile. Although we are improving we are no where near City's level yet and I can't see anything other then a City win when we play them. What I'll be looking for is a battling performance where we play as a team and eliminate the silly mistakes, if city do win I want them to earn those three points and know that they had a real test against us. Thats my base line if Tim can do that as a minimum agaisnt City then I for one will be happy and look forward to teh next game with enthusiasm- plan for the worse and hope for the best

9 days now to prepare for City. I agree Slurms, if we can battle against them and make them work for the ball, then whatever the result, if the players can be proud of their performance then so will I.

Good post ItalianYiddo. Can't take away what Tim has done but let's see how he gets on with City, Hull and Everton which are 3 tough games for Spurs. It's looking good under Tim and apart from the blip against Arsenal, he has acquitted himself very well. COYS!

Topho, I'm warming to your opinion of Siggy, not neccessarily crap but certainly we can do better. Not sure of Holtby as a game changer. He is a trier and a terrier but I still feel he's more suited to cup games and coming on as a sub to help close down games. Capoue has not been the same since the injury.

Pele10 if we buy in this window it has to be a game changer, big time LB or big time Striker, no stop gaps. That's why I don't believe we'll do business this window. Problem is if we lose Ade or Soldado to a long injury we will be in trouble. If I was Levy I would try of Benteke and if that failed I would make Swansea an offer they couldn't refuse for Bony. The guy is a monster and has the desire we need. I found he was really getting frustrated yesterday because of the play around him.

If we finish 8th Sherwood has done better than the previous. I expect us to lose against City, hoping for more of course. Ref the blip against arsenal away, how did we get on away to arsenal in the league this season and last? can someone post the scores here I seem to forget. JVD i would be happy to see Siggy go, not unhappy to see Holtby go but unhappy to see Capoue go. Ghulam I would do that deal today, not sure Laudrup would though.

To mis quote napoleon 'I would rather have a Manager who was lucky than one who was good.' But too early to start slapping yourself on the back ox...or Levy or sherwood...so far so good in the Pl though...Tim will need to continue winning and keep/get the players on side if he's to stand a chance of keeping the job for any length of time....he will have a blip, what will happen then? will he get fired like AVB?...I think not, he'll get till the summer and that'll be it...

Lets just hope City go gung ho as normal with the 4-4-2. We could match up well with a 4-5-1/4-3-3 at home.

Worldpeace I agree that the art of good squad management is playing those players that are not only in form and who are fit, but also for the occasion. But are you suggesting that Bentelab is a "pet" of TS and will play regardless? You and I do not see one iota of what goes on at the training sessions. Give him credit - he will pick who he sees is the best for the occasion, direct the formation how he sees is right for the occasion, and prepare the squad for the occasion. To coin a phrase, no player is bigger than the club, and if the likes of Bentelab are in form and doing the business on the training field then they should be given thought for inclusion. Yes Sandro is needed if fit against MC and therefore it is possibly Dembele who should be looking over his shoulder at Bentelab, as I see much more competition there than with Sandro.
