3 Point Lane? Southampton, possibly the only points left on offer for March! Unless of course we do a Benfica on Liverpool!
So, as the sun sets on yet another season full of promise, and Tim (nice, but getting dimmer) shakes hands with his successor on Sunday, Southampton`s Mauricio Pochettino, we once again look at what might have been our season.
We have reached a glass ceiling called 5th place. 1 or 2 World Class Players got us into the CL but without the cash for a Bale or a Suarez or an Aguero we are not going to break through that glass ceiling.
Since Abramovich arrived at the Bridge in July 2003 he has spent £700m on players and it has won him; 1 Premiership title; 2 League cups, 4 FA Cups, 1 Champions League and 1 Europa League. Manchester City spent £930.4m turning themselves from mid table mediocrity into Premier League title winners and title contenders. We spend £108m to turn us from being the bridesmaid to being the wedding jokes!
We Spurs fans can now only sit and watch from the sidelines as Liverpool, Chelsea, Man City and Gooners slug it out for the Premiership Title whilst we face the prospect of another season in the Europa League. Even with the squad that we have, we struggle to get a side out toward the end of the season for both Europa and the Premiership. In fact, we have struggled to even know who our first team is, such has been the under performance of our new summer intake. It says it all when a Spurs youth player keeps out a £9m international signing out of the team.
We will probably play better for the rest of the season now that the pressure is off the players. We have no more Top 4 teams to meet after the Bin Dippers on the 31st March and we have little or no chance of closing the gap between us and the Gooners after they beat us at the Lane. Last Sunday was our last realistic chance to get within touching distance of a top 4. Let`s face it ....even if we did qualify for the CL how far would we get when we can`t even beat the CL rejects in the Europa?
You have to ask therefore, where are we going as a club? What can we realistically hope to achieve when our Chairman will not spend the kind of cash City and Chavs spend and we just keep selling our world class players. If Manure had not imploded the way they have done under Moyes we would probably be sitting well behind in 6th place by now.
And so Sunday brings us Southampton, a team that we can probably take on with some level of confidence, you never know we might actually win it. After our Benfica invitation friendly, that suddenly became a contest, we welcome back; Emmanuel Adebayor, Mousa Dembele, Younes Kaboul and Jan Vertonghen. First names on the team sheet will probably be: Bentaleb; Chadli and Sandro and as Kyle Walker is still out with his hip I expect Kyle Naughton will take the right hand side whilst Rose takes the left.
To paraphrase the great Bard; Tim Sherwood is; "Full of sound and fury....signifying nothing" so now all he can fight for is our pride, and even that is belittled all over North London toilet walls right now! I assume Sherwood`s merry men will put Eriksen out left and Townsend or Lennon on the right. But at least we might not look so knackered this Sunday, as in past post Europa League games, as we may have some fresh legs to play on.
So what is our player`s motivation now? What is our ambition for the rest of the season? Even if the Gooners lose to the Chavs and to Citeh I cannot see us catching them, even if we do end the season the way we started it, by knocking off the lower clubs.
I shall take my seat on Sunday at the Lane to watch a game of footy and that will be all it is now and hopefully enjoy watching the players playing with some degree of freedom.
Ah well there is always next season! We`ve tasted the Portugese Plonker, let`s hope it`s not going to be a Spanish "Vino Collapso"
