'If It's Football, It's Vital'

At All Costs?

Athletico Madrid came within a whisker of achieving a league and Champions league double, which would have been a truly remarkable achievement, when you consider their richer rivals.

Now I watched the game with interest. Part of me wanted the former Spurs boys to lift the trophy, but in equal measure, I wanted the underdog to beat their world dominating neighbour and really ruffle the feathers of the games elite. What did finally sway me was the cynical manner of how Athletico went about achieving their goal, in a win at all costs manner that was hardly something for the purists.

Now don`t get me wrong, I love the physical aspect of the game, but is it better than the beautiful one? Of course in a perfect world, we would have the right mix of both disciplines, but on Saturday and many other occasions this season, the Athletico quality and superb team work and organisation was tarnished by a cynical side that mirrored that of their manager.

This brings me to my question. Would you accept seeing Tottenham play in such a physical and cynical manner or would you demand we won in the way of our tradition and that is playing entertaining and attacking football. Taking it further would you be prepared to win dirty or be happier winning nothing, but playing in a way that entertains first and foremost?

Of course we are right in wanting more fight and leadership in the current Tottenham side, however is there a step too far for us as fans to accept a winning team?..

anti football, shocking tactics from AM, would of been a great shame if AM won this, and DS was a disgrace at the end of the game.

We need a mixture Ox. We need the iron fist in the velvet glove. At the moment we're a velour glove and our fist is made of ice-cream. As a quick aside did you hear that Athletico Madrid's wage bill for this season is less than QPRs. Imagine paying wages that are less than a Championship club and winning La Liga and losing the CL final in extra time. Shows you don't have to pay through the nose, you just need the right players led by the right manager. More characters, more team players, more hungry professionals and less prima donna's with their heads firmly rammed up their own backsides.
SpuriousLife
you can have a mixture of both, if you dont you only have one plan hense when it wen to extra time AM didnt no what to do, if they go behind there plan A is gone. TEAM effort should be standard when you dont have the ball, i learn't at school boys. everton shold of this season, we didnt show it, lik of verts and paulinho couldnt care less
123spurs
Agree with first post 123. But in a CL final, grind out the win as you can! They played better through the season! Simeone had a meltdown! But it was the final! I think there is a balance! Play with flair from the off, lock down when required!
Dublin Hotspur
How many Atletico players were booked for diving in? More than half the team? In the end Real's classier players and more positive attitude won them the game... Simeone lost it at the end, beginning with his sarcastic applause aimed at Ancelotti, who's greater experience, shown in his tactical tweaks, shone through. Atletico did defend fantastically well, until they were dead on their feet but, Real were more than able to take advantage, having more strength and superior skills at the end. A combination of both teams approach would be ideal. Grit, determination, fight, a winning mentality and the skill and craft to entertain.... Ladies and Gentleman, I give you the new Spurs!
MAN ON!
...but Dublin, it didn't win them the match!
MAN ON!
Fight hard...Fight fair!.
Cider spurs
I know that man on, and agree with your post! I think it was the only way they could see them winning this one looking at the 2 squads!
Dublin Hotspur
As some have stated, I think a balance of power and flair. I don't want Spurs labelled the new Stoke. By all means get up and at em', but this can still be done fairly and in a professional manner. I want Spurs to win being renowned for the beautiful, fair and exciting way they play. Give no others the opportunity to tarnish our successes for poor sportsmanship, but more have all and sundry drooling over the way we play.
Cider spurs
Real have three times our income, five times Atletico's, spot the flaw in the fantasy ?
jod
Finals in football are never pretty so can't see the point really. To criticise AM for tactics in 1 game of their season is cheap to say the least. They won the La Liga and were clapped off the park by 90 000 Barcelona supporters. I doubt our supporters have any such humility in them.
Mix26
Too true Mix...We've not got the clap!.
Cider spurs
Cider there's distinct differences in Spanish football where diving, play acting and malicious tackling are what make it good yet bad at the same time. I've seen a RM kick the sheit outa Barca on a few occasions. I think it was ronaldo or Bale stating how close the encounters between the two clubs have been this season and how tough the fixture was going to be. The desire to win got both teams to the final so it's no surprise we saw what to me was an outstanding match filled with proper drama and in the end the best team won.
Mix26
Mix...I watched the game, like you I witnessed a hard fought contest by varying styles, factor in what was at stake and easy to understand maybe a bit of kidology or rash challenge. Remember Gazza vs Forest in the cup Final?.
Cider spurs
Good posts Mix26... a mixture of the two strategies is so important... trying to play silky football all the time was the flaw in the HR and Ossie's time with the club....
Highgatespur
jod. Income has nothing to do with the way a team sets up to play.
MAN ON!
I agree mix. They were after all just 1 minute away from victory.

Oooh Cider i'm still a young pup mate and the only stuff I've seen live other than the history channel is gazza in and outa hospital lol

I thought Atletico defended really well and that is as important as any attacking flair you might have as a team. Ultimately, it's what won them the league title. A lack of grit and defensive fight is what lost Liverpool the PL title.
MAN ON!
Mix...Jackie Chan would have been pleased with one of those challenges from Gazza.

In any game, you coach your players to excel at what they do in a framework of maximising your potential against the opponent of the day while doing your best to minimalize the opponent's potential. At times it can mean anti-football, simply because you need to stop the opponent in order for you to succeed. Fewer and fewer games can be won just by throwing your players out without regard to limiting the opposition. Teams are too well coached nowadays and players are fit and well drilled. A style of play is a nice thing to have but any team's qualities can be limited if you have the correct plan and the disciplined players to carry ot that plan. The germane question ENIC needs to answer is, who is the manager that can best get the players we have in the squad to express themselves positivel while having the discipline to carry out a game plan that will negate the opposing team? Who is that man? Very few have a resume that suggests they will be able to manage that in four competitions, week in and week out with success as the end goal. Can't wait to hear the name of the man they hae selected to take this team forward. COYS

Anti football is only bad for the neutrals & the team who is more attack minded & better.

If your team wins playing anti football,or the team you want to win wins playing this way you don`t give a $hit, you call it tactical genius.

The difference between parking the bus, anti football or attacking football all depends on what team you want to win.

If an opposing team frustrates you & wins the game 1-0 then you slate them.If your team does the same & wins 1-0 then it`s a different story.

The parking of the bus came first when Spurs played Chelsea & we defended them to a 0-0 draw,Chelsea were livid. But for Spurs fans we lapped it up.
Bad for Chelsea, bad for neutrals who just want to see a good game of football, but for Spurs fans it was good.
All depends on what final result you want the game to end in,or if you don`t give a $hit & just want to see a good game of football.
Fanny adams
I must have been watching a different game, Real madrid should be nick named the Bakery 'cause they produce so many rolls! I saw a well drilled AM team shut down any avenue for a Real Madrid attack for 80 something minutes of the game, I saw clear dives from both teams, i saw AM being punished for it. Ronalds dive anyone? I saw cynical tackling from both teams but I only saw the real madrid players whinge to the ref for calling it. Ramos should have been sent off long before he scored the goal to tie the game. What it all boils down to is a discussion on how the game is referreed. there is so much inconsistency in the game and season on season the stakes are raised higher and higher. in fairness I thought the ref did a very decent job on saturday night and still got decisions wrong and handed out inappropriate punishments. I maybe old fashioned but I would have prefered to see AM win to prove that teams don't have to be buiilt on Billions to compete and win. I draw no satisfaction that Spurs Reseve team won the Champions league.
Slurms McKenzie
Fair point even Fanny! I suppose a farm point might be mainly cow and bullsheet?
Slurms McKenzie
Farm point fanny, wining is what matters, not loosing but being easy ont eh eye. Show me any supportor who prefers loosing playing pretty football to winning playing ugly football?
Slurms McKenzie
According to the papers it's Poch for sure within 48 hours! That's probably great for the purists and the all out attacking style but he will have to work hard to get this group of players to play that all out closing down style of defense when they lose the ball. Not my first choice but I will support him completely none-the-less.
jvd
Yea I very much doubt any media report on this. Spurs are too tight lipped in thier deals to have it scooped by the press.
Slurms McKenzie
And if its poochy why the delay and if its poochy its because we could not get FdB and he's still only second choice!
Slurms McKenzie
And it measn that ancelotti was a shoe in for the job if Mardrid has lost, thats why we waited. More Media BS.
Slurms McKenzie
of we get poch and he wants our players to track back, closing down etc and if players like paulinho dopt bother with it, we are back to square one, but whos fault is it, for me the players just ask TS
123spurs
So the new season hasn't started, the new manager hasn't been appointed, the squad hasn't been selected and we are already layign the balme for the coming season of failure at the players feet? Well as Homer said "Aim low"!
Slurms McKenzie
It is of course, possible to play a lot of so called anti-football and mostly lose. Likewise, play open attacking football and mostly win. Liverpool proved that this season but, defensively they let themselves down. I would prefer to watch Spurs play like Liverpool and lose occasionally rather than like Stoke and lose often. ;-)
MAN ON!
True man On, but if we played like stoke and lost often we would be consistent its all in how you deliver the message not the message itself. The balls out attacking approach hasn't ever really been successful, but always entertaining, Rodgers is being hailed as the new messiah by some but isn't he really just Kevin Keegan with better hair.?
Slurms McKenzie
He's Keegan but with a much better temperament.
MAN ON!
I would love it if he talked like Keegan, Love it...

Farm point! I just entered a local GAA raffle. First prize a pig, second prize, a pint. Third prize, no pig, no pint! Never won anything, but guarantee I win the pig! 4 legged snouty type before you ask! Misses will be ecstatic!
Dublin Hotspur
Classic GAA raffle! first prize will cost you a hell of alot more then the ticket!
Slurms McKenzie
Slurms McKenzie It all depends on what players you have at your disposal.
When the team is far superior to you, then you get that.
When the team is not you scratch your head because you don`t understand why your team is playing like that.

Example,,,If Real madrid played Spurs at home & we played anti football & won 1-0 we would be elated.
But if Spurs played West bromwich Albion at WHL & we won 1-0 playing anti football you have to ask why we had to play anti football to win the game.
These sorts of tactics should only take place according to your opposition,& whether your home or away.

As boring as it sounds but you need to base your tactics according to the game & opposition,& also the importance of it.

A bore draw or win in one game can mean something completely different in another.
Especially if the odds are stacked firmly in your favour,or stacked firmly against.
Fanny adams
Fanny, completely correct. Just look at the Liverpool v Chelsea game a few weeks ago. Anti football by Mourinho but what a great game and he got his result. Wasn't a dirty game just tactically a master game.
jvd
Preaching to the choir Fanny, Fielding a defensive ste-up has only really become a crime in football since Mourinhio has become outraged at other managers and coaches not letting his team win! We used to credit managers for setting their teams up to be hard to beat now its the worst trait to afflict the game since John Barnes' rapping. But then it is Sky Sports who are pushing that agenda because bore score draws are hard to sell but 6-0 thrashings are mesmerising!
Slurms McKenzie
Fanny adams, the issue with all that is it all begins at the back and you can't ignore that. It makes it look boring until the chemistry is there up front for the players to express themselves. The mistake we made was to ignore the defensive end while allowing more freedom up front and we conceded ridiculous goal after ridiculous goal against sides that were ready to play from the off. Lloris saved our butts so often the second half of the season it was not even funny. You can't be fully rooted in defence but you absolutely must be solid in defence before worrying about the other end. The quality is in our squad to win games 1-0. Not sexy, to be sure. We just don't have the horses to win games 4-3. We generally come out on the wrong end of that or claw back from a deficit to get a draw. Hopefully the next guy gets the balance right. Or it'll be time for Blasphemous Rumours and we'll all be chirping about Somebody. As nothing is going on, we could all be Enjoying the Silence, but, then, People Are People and we're all looking for our own Personal Jesus. Even the bookies are in on it. And then there's that Fly on the Windscreen....COYS
peterballb
I want my Spurs to play the slick passing game that dominates weaker teams and prevents the better teams from setting into their rhythm. This so nearly worked for AVB but the ultra caution he favoured eventually bored both us and I reckon the players too. Maybe Poch can find the right balance with the talent he will inherit. As for Athletico - they won La Liga and nearly the CL so only a fool would criticise them or their manager.
Love totty
Athletico came with 100 seconds of winning the Champions League. History will not remember that. History will only remember the winners. They had a game plan and it worked perfectly. They had nothing left for extra time, which was a pity. I can't say Madrid played the better football, because it was Simeone's tactics to allow them to play. Ronaldo was absent for most of the game. Bale was more of a threat. Ramos might well have been sent off if a different ref was on. In a final, with so much at stake, you adjust your tactics for the win. Mourinho did this with Inter and they frustrated Barca and got the win. Athletico, for me, was exactly how Mourinho would have played. Ancelotti did exactly the same against Bayern.
vicspur
If we get Frank De Boer, then we will be playing exactly the type of football we all want, dominating possession with creativity.
vicspur
Ancelotti though, altered his tactics with key player changes to counter Atleticos approach, knowing/seeing that they were wearing themselves out.

peterballb And how do Spurs play from the back with Walker,Rose & Dawson as 3 of your 4 backline?
How do the spread the width with lennon,Siggy & Townsend as your main outlets?

Not going to happen unless we upgrade on our average to better. This club for the last 20 years has only ever had a handful of players that can actually play & keep it on the deck.
,br>The way to win in modern football is to play deck football & have players of a technical ability.Whether that be defence, midfield or strikers.
In a back 5 of Lloris,Walker,Dawson,Vertonghen,Rose, the only 2 that can actually play football is Vertonghen & Lloris.
Our goalkeeper can play football on the deck better than some of our outfield players, you couldn`t make it up.

The Champions league final this season was the best CL final I have seen in many years. Two totally different style teams. One playing beautiful attacking football, and the other playing a gritty defensive game full of commitment and passion. It was like a heavy weight title fight, Ali v Foreman. With the tuff guy winning for much of the fight, only for the finesse and skill of Real eventually to win out. Justice was done on the night! What a game!!!
Pele10
Pele10.. I like that description. Ali v Foreman. It's the way I saw it myself.
MAN ON!
Fanny Adams, srikes me that Harry did ok with Bassong and Dawson in front of Gomes with Palacios protecting the back four. Hardly ideal, but because all XI were working for each other, tracking back, winning back the ball, it worked. Same thing this year under AVB who was 19 W, 4L and 3 D before being sacked. That's not a poor record. Yes, spanked by Ciy and Liverpool. West Ham was against the run of play and Arsenal we lost 1-0. In the other games, we pressured the opposition and worked hard to get the ball back when it was lost. And that was with the players you mention. Kaboul was supposed to be healthy. He wasn't, thus Dawson got to play. Walker is Walker (myself, I prefer Naughton because he does not make the glaring errors) and Rose was nowhere near as poor as people make out. There are players I'd rather have, but, fact is, Rose was providing as many crosses as Walker, running up and down the wing all day long, and making far fewer defensive blunders. His inury, along with those to Lennon, Kaboul and Sandro and Ade's brother's death all changed the dynamics of the season. Yet, but for two bad losses, we were one of the best defensive teams in the league and I was never worried at 1-0 that we wouldlose or that a 0-0 would not somehow become a 1-0 in our favour. Had Defoe score on his sitter against West Ham, that game too (IMO) would have finished 1-0. Not great. Hardly inspirational. But managed for a result. We need to start winning things. Contrary to some on here, 4th is not winning. The League Cup, FA Cup, Title and Europa are what we can win next season. Anything less are degrees of failure in each. Doesn't men a bad season. Just doesn't mean winning anything. COYS

Cant agree with the Ali v Foreman analogy. Ali's gameplan was to let Foreman wear himself out by battering him. Ali did all the defending in that fight, stood firm and took everything Foreman had and then when he had nothing left, Ali went for the kill and danced to victory. Athletico took almost everything madrid threw but got done with a sly poke to the eye. From then on, it was Madrid all the way.

Our boys are doing well for Belgium. Verts is class (as per Peterballb), put him amongst the right players and he excels. He is making some awesome runs forward (as per against United). Chadli just scored!. Lukaku a hat-trick. I think Belgium will be a surprise package in the WC.

What did people expect? Athletico to go toe to toe with Real with a team full of galacticos and get thrashed? Yes, lots of glory in that, Athletico came within a whisker of doing a La Liga and CL double on a shoestring, this is where my admiration and respect go to not to Real winning "La decima". Lets get a coach that instills a winning mentality and is tactically aware, with the quality of our squad and a couple of additions we can be a force, I am afraid Pochettino does not inspire me one bit.

Highgatespur
The problem is while Levy is in charge and making football decisions, no one can guess who the new man will be and Levy will blabber out another new project spiel as if he knows where/how we aim to progress.

A club aspiring to be a regular top-4, imo, should not be relying on an interpreter to speak to the fans and the media. May be it's an Argentine thing with Lamela still struggling with the language?.

I like the sound of how FdB prefers to execute his plans across the club. Poco had done well, but because of his PL experience he'd be expected to hit the ground running? Poco, imo, is a bigger risk both for us and for Poco. Hope his interpreter attended the interview with him!

THFC1882, I find your comment as to why support Poch to be quite silly. The reason we would want to support him or any coach/manager appointed is because we love THFC. Supporting him gives him a chance to succeed not to support him guarantees (depending on if other moaners follow your lead) his failure. Surely you would prefer that whomever comes in has some chance of success or is is that you want THFC to continuously fail?

We've been told that Poch is "all sorted contract-wise" and we're just finalising terms with Southampton. It'll be a 3 year deal with a further 1 year option. He'll also bring in 3/4 of his backroom staff.
Dublin Hotspur
If it is to be Poch, then Levy proves once again what a clueless idiot he is when it comes to choosing managers. If it's not to be Poch then Levy shows once again his lack of management skills in allowing the press hysteria to build to the current level before dumping the man. Personally, I hope Poch tells him to get stuffed.

we have no choice but to give MoPo a chance...simple truth is he won't get as long as a manager with a longer track record of success..so he needs to hit the floor running...and at least he's done well in his first seasons before (let's not look at longer than that!)so it's now or never..could we get better than MoPo?...imo yes but we as a club don't seem to have any ambition any more...let's all just be happy and clap along ENIC until they leave with millions of pounds profit stuffed in their pockets.....they need to back the manager now or perhaps we can challenge for top4 again in about 20 years (unless we need to refurb the stadium then!)....was it really worth putting up with a spiv and wasting a season just to get MoPo?

Pochettino could turn out to be a very good manager. We would be taking a risk with him but same would be if we went for FDB instead, similar risks. This is it now for Levy, this appointment needs to work or it will set us back. If it is to be Pochettino then I have confidence that he can get our squad playing to their potential.
Kong
are we getting MoPo just because we have such a petulant Chairman?...was FdB too honest for our devious Chairman?...if that is the reason that we miss out on FdB then Levy just needs to grow up! Honestly it's like a spoilt rich brat is running the club as opposed to a grown man...
shedboy2
yep Saints have only spent close on 70m NET in the past two years...so much for working wonders on a budget!...meanwhile we've made nearly 40m profit on players in the last 3 seasons...MoPo is another gamble...

WHLN17london, How sad for you that you did not appreciate this wonderful game of football. That you missed wave after wave of beautiful passing movements from Real Madrid throughout the game. Sad that you missed the sublime performance of Luka Modric. Sad you missed and failed to appreciate the brilliant closing down, denying Real Madrid time and space, and the wonderful last ditch tackles the Atletico defenders made throughout the game. How disappointing you did not appreciate the sublime header that beat arguably the best keeper in the world in the dying seconds of injury time when Real's brave efforts to break down Atleitco's mean defence seemed doomed to fail. Let's not forget Atletico had succeeded with the same game plan just a few days earlier to win the Spanish Championship in the Nou Camp against the mighty Barca. Sad that you did not appreciate when we got into the tired legs time of extra time that the beautiful game prevailed, and that despite Atleitco's wonderful defensive efforts, pure football won the day. You say it was a sad ending. I found it a beautiful ending for both teams, with Atletico deservedly being the Champions of Spain for the massive efforts they have put into this season, and for Real Madrid to be Champions of Europe after destroying the CL holders Bayern Munich in the semi final with that sublime attacking performance in Munich and eventually winning out against the Champions of Spain in the final... What a game!!!

shedboy-get off your high horse about fdb.i am glad he didnt get the job,the loud mouth.the truth is all the noises were coming his end and not ours.
tarkan mardinCOYS
So We get poochie and Southampton will get FdB? remember when AVB got the job and Rodgers didn't? hope we are not throwing envious looks Southampton's way in a a couple of years and thinking what might have been...
Slurms McKenzie
the one i feel for is poor tim sherwood.
tarkan mardinCOYS
is this how we are going to play it now by calling his poochie-seriously guys grow up
tarkan mardinCOYS
If Pochettino can convince Lallana and Shaw or Chambers to join us then he'll immediately start making his own job easier. I'll support him and hope he does well. It won't be easy but it wouldn't have been easy for any new manager. I also liked FdB but please bear in mind for all the 'love' Eriksen and Vertonghen apparently might have for FdB they still left Ajax whilst he was in charge.
SpuriousLife
Fdb- a load mouth?....hahaha..in comparison to Dim he is a church mouse!....Fdb can create winning teams whilst losing his best players...which is what happens to us! MoPo is a cheap option taken by a petulant Chairman who needs to grow up or leave....thinking about it I hope Lewis wants Moo because he's planning to replace Levy in a coup with Nicola Cortese!...now that would be worth seeing! after all most of the property deals have been done or planned so why do we still need a Land economist running a football club...?..;)
shedboy2
He flicks the kettle on, coffee cup alongside
Next decision...are the eggs to be scrambled, poached or fried
Now fed and watered, he's ready for the day
Switching on the laptop to read of what they say
He pauses for a second, rubs the sleep from his eyes
Trying to decipher the truth amidst the lies
This is where he sits, he has now for so long
Trying to work out, who and what went wrong
So now it's almost over, the fallout will begin
We'll move on to players, and who we want brought in.
We really do live it, we do it every day
I just want to go for a pint...I've nothing more to say.

Really not sure about this one at all. Strangely enough itís mostly the Tottenham Fans who appear to be against Poch. Everyone Iíve spoken to (city fans, Arsenal fans etc) seem to think he will do a decent job. I think that just sums up the trust we have in DL. I canít for the life in me understand the selection of Pochettino. How did they come to the conclusion that a another young and relatively inexpericned manager will succeed where all other similar predecessors have failed. What is the thought process? I will fully back Pochettino (which is certainly more than our board will) but very much doubt that he is the right bloke to take us forward. Iíll be honest, I think the only reason Poch will be appointed is because he will work within a very strict budget and wonít cause any waves. Exactly what we donít need. So basically itís another season of DL beings chairman, manager, scout, coach and of course THFCís no1 fan!!!
hudderspur
Kong of course you are correct and lets face it no matter who we appointed it would be risk. I think the main difference between Pooch and Frankie is that people here can point ot Frankies' league successes with is club and his Champions league exploits and his playing history. Poochie on the other hand has all the credentials to be a good Southampton boss. His achievements are on a par with Pulis and he is still a realatively unknown. We could speculate how the interviews went:

Mr FdB why should you get the job - well I've played at the hisghest level and won five Dutch titels, the Uefa cup and Champions league with Ajax and also a La Liga Title with Barcalona, I am the most capped Dutch international player. As a manager I have won the Dutch league four times in a row I have managed my Team in the champions league for the last four years. I have developed numerous internationals, in fact you have several of my youth players in your team. I have also been the assistant manager of the Dutch team and am use to dealing with big egos.

Mr Pochettino why should you get the job - I played football in Spain and I have won the Copa Del Rey once. I was capped 20 times for Argentina in 13 years. Some day I would like to manage a team to a league title, someday I would like to manage at the highest level. It is my dream to manage a team in the champions league. I eventually see myself in International management but the oppertunities haven't presented themselves to me. As for youth development I manage a team with argueably the best youth production system in english football and I have used those players in my team, because I saw how good they were when the previous manager also used them in his team. Oh and I Know Joe Lewis.... Congratulations Mr pochettino

i am hearing pochettino announcement imminent.most bookies have closed the book

Wow I'm astounded at the responses regarding MP. Saints fans and players alike are really upset he is apparently to leave. The guy has barely spoken and we are writing him off. He has not even assembled a team or signed a player. THFC supporters cry out for a "attacking football philosophy" well here it is. There is genuine talent in this man and football ability that will take us forward.

Nice one Cider!
Geofspurs
Mix that would be the same saints fans and players who were really upset when Nigel Adkins was ousted?

Any player that comes to the club is a risk. Any manager that comes to the club is a risk. Itís football! There are no guarantees. All supporters can do, no matter who comes in, is support them ... through the good, the bad, and the ugly. Thatís what supporters are supposed to do. COYS!
Geofspurs
That's why they're called 'SUPPORTERS'!

Slurms would you like to have a go at BR interview and Martinez at that too? Give us a rundown of their CV's will ya...
Mix26
LOL!...FDB the saviour...Poch the useless!. What a load of tosh. No guarantees either of Poch OR FdB would succeed. Let's cut the crap here, Ajax had a bloody good chance of winning the league regularly. Vert's, Eriksen and Alderweireld all playing during FDbs 4 titles, add to this Klaasen(Arsenal linked) Fischer(Liverpool linked) Daley Blind(Utd linked) Siem de Jong, all current players.

Yes he's done well, but the players at his disposal are part of what should be challenging for the title season on season. I grant he still had to win the titles, but let's move away from meaning this makes him far superior than Poch.

I forgot the amount of times that it was said we had no playing style of late, not being able to see what we were actually trying to do. Poch has a style, one it is said we desire. Attacking football, whilst being only second to City for shots conceded last season. This has the making of a very good balance, great going forward, tight at the back, although still defensive work to be done. High intensity, desire and team work. Improving all areas both on and off the pitch. Crap it is not, worse than FDB...NOBODY can say. As for the titles...Well done Ajax and FDB, means nothing in the prem, for those of you who believe it does...I give you AVB. OH!...Hold on, he had to go according to some, he was playing in a manner totally opposite to Poch...Weird that!.
Cider spurs
How wrong they were ey Slurms? After all fighting relegation to top 10 finishes and some of the best football in the league with 4 young players debuting for England.
Mix26
Mix...You scribed your pro Poch post as I wrote mine...Well said. I really do think he'll be excellent for Spurs. Well chuffed!.
Cider spurs
Well said Cider
Mix26
Mix26 lets not confuse enteratining football with the "best football" in the league. The best football is played by the team that wins the league because its winning football. The saints were good to watch because they played open attacking football which also meant they conceded regularly remeber our games agaisnt them last season? They were not Defensive power houses of the league and lets be honest that has been one of our weakest links for the last few months!
Slurms McKenzie
WHLN17london- hmm you sound just like Topho...who i thought was banned?...as for Andros...yep set the world alight, his injury saving him from the ignominy of being dropped from the England squad...I doubt we'll remember him in 3 years....MoPo, I won't be insulting him...I have nothing against him it's just there are better options out there- one being FdB, who has done considerably better than Jol could do with ajax...
shedboy2
none of those players were bought in by poch thou.
topspur53
Guys, I don't think the general negativity aimed at Pochettino is necessarily, or mainly about the man himself and/or his potential to succeed or not with Spurs. It's because he doesn't offer any more hope for us than say, AVB did. (This is my feeling anyway). If he can manage to deal with the now blinding spotlight that will be on him and the increased pressure of being at Spurs and, the much higher expectations for success, then yes, he's the man. If he gets off to a bad start, he will be on a hiding to nothing and this is my main worry. It's not even about the style of football, it's more about coping with the increasing pressure associated with Spurs. He's not a step up and, with his lack of experience, he may just manage a few sideways steps at best. If it is to be you Pochettino, then I wish you the very best of luck. It's not your fault, that your not someone else... ;-) Up the Spurs!
