'If It's Football, It's Vital'

At All Costs?

Athletico Madrid came within a whisker of achieving a league and Champions league double, which would have been a truly remarkable achievement, when you consider their richer rivals.

Now I watched the game with interest. Part of me wanted the former Spurs boys to lift the trophy, but in equal measure, I wanted the underdog to beat their world dominating neighbour and really ruffle the feathers of the games elite. What did finally sway me was the cynical manner of how Athletico went about achieving their goal, in a win at all costs manner that was hardly something for the purists.

Now don`t get me wrong, I love the physical aspect of the game, but is it better than the beautiful one? Of course in a perfect world, we would have the right mix of both disciplines, but on Saturday and many other occasions this season, the Athletico quality and superb team work and organisation was tarnished by a cynical side that mirrored that of their manager.

This brings me to my question. Would you accept seeing Tottenham play in such a physical and cynical manner or would you demand we won in the way of our tradition and that is playing entertaining and attacking football. Taking it further would you be prepared to win dirty or be happier winning nothing, but playing in a way that entertains first and foremost?

Of course we are right in wanting more fight and leadership in the current Tottenham side, however is there a step too far for us as fans to accept a winning team?..
