'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Whats your team for 2014/2015?

I thought we would have a light hearted bit of banter to see who everyone thinks we should be looking at in this transfer window. Lets take into consideration that Mr Poch would be interested in buying players that suit his style of attacking free-flowing football.

For me there are 3 main areas which we need to look at strengthening for the coming season.

They are:

1. LEFT BACK/LEFT FULL BACK
2. CENTRE BACK
3. WINGER/ATTACKER/GOALSCORER

At LEFT BACK based on Poch's style of play we need the kind of player that can surge forward yet cover his ar$e and get back to defend. I think we are all hoping that we have a chance in signing young LUKE SHAW, but we know the chances are slim. Id go for the experience of ASHLEY COLE or try a sneaky bid for COENTRAO of Real Madrid as he may not be in this seasons plans. ALBERTO MORENO is a strong left back but with increasing links to the Bindippers it looks highly unlikely.

At CENTRE BACK, I am personally hoping for someone that can play alongside VERTS and create a super partnership. Hopefully if we do bring in someone new they will be given the chance the mould and play together. There has been alot of of name thrown around for CB's from Southampton and the likes of Rio from Manure and Lescott from Citeh. My personal favorite for the position would be Toby Alderweireld from Athletico Madrid. Her has not played as much as he would want to with Godin and Miranda playing so well. But he could be available and played alongside VERTS at AJAX.

The missing piece of the jigsaw for me is the ATTACKER/WINGER/STRIKER position, it has been since we sold the mighty Bale. This is the kind of player that will have to play off the wings, cut through the middle, link up play with Eriksen and the Striker, and be able to score goals himself. There are some mighty players out there, and the transfer fees wont be small. But here is who I beleive could fit into this postion...
HERNANDEZ (Manure)... LOIC REMY (QPR)... SADIO MANE (Red Bull Saltzburg ALEXIS SANCHEZ (Barcelona) JAMES RODRIGUEZ (Monaco) DANNY WELBECK (Manure)

I will choose one from each position and create my best formation, or the most likely: Lloris; Walker, Alderweireld, Vertonghen, Cole; Paulinho, Dembele; Lamela, Eriksen, Remy; Adebayor.

Whats your team for 2014/2015...?

Yidmarks: My team; anyone inside a THFC shirt! Or, if I could choose, it would include Modric, Berbatov, and BAE! Guess I’ll just have to go with the flow. :-)
Geofspurs
Yidmarks: Thanks for the article, mate! Should be interesting.
Geofspurs
What? No Sandro or Capoue? Who wins the ball in MF?
Geofspurs
Without any in comings Lloris walker fryers verts chriches capoue sandro lamela paulinho Eriksen soldado/adebayor With in comings Lloris walker Rodrigues verts Alderweireld capoue sandro lamela Eriksen paulinho soldado with Konoplyanka as a in/out sub in every game
Highgatespur
My Formation: 4231 Lloris – Walker Savic Vertonghen Rodriguez – Pauinho Capoue – Chadli Eriksen Lamela - Lukaku
hudderspur
High: Not sure about Sandro and Capoue both playing. Might swap one of them for Chadli. How are ya?
Geofspurs
I'll tell ye something - I wouldnt have Loic Remy!!

We have apparently agreed a deal with the player, met his buyout clause and are ready to rock n roll - but he wants to wait and see if Arsenal come in for him!!

KierzoSBC
Kierzo - Spot on. Bollox to Remy!!
hudderspur
Yep i agree if he wants to wait for arse then go for somebody who wants to play for us
spurs50yrs
Why ? Champions league or Europa ? Play in front of 60,000 or 36,000 ? He is being a professional unlike Willian, at least we know where we stand.
Highgatespur
Loris

Walker Lovren Vertonghen Baines

Sandro

Paulinho Dembele

Menez Lukaku Eriksen
KierzoSBC
Wishful thinking using the terms Light Heated and Banter! Watch the venom flow! COYS!
Critical_Spur
Get the medical team out there (they're doing bugger all here anyway!) and do their bit on Remy. A back of fag packet for contract. Done and dusted!..... I rate the guy. PL experience and no issues with injuries. COYS!
Critical_Spur
Not Luic Remy. .This one has hovered around Tottenham from Harry Redknapp's time -Ian Broomfield (scout) has an long standing connection/interest in him. Injury prone and always "available" for some reason! And Ashley Cole will end up in America with other declining past their best players!
camper
Lloris and Eriksen plus 9.
MAN ON!
Why do people keep putting Eriksen on the left, we need him in the middle ????
spurs50yrs
spurs50yrs: I agree with you about Eriksen.
Geofspurs
MAN: That’s about as far as I can go with team selection too!
Geofspurs
I have a few times now, and I will repeat. Our defence is so uncertain now (due to injuries, age, lack of form/quality, being unsettled) that I believe that short-term solutions will only make it worse. No to Cole, Lescott for those reasons. Given our problems with overseas players not settling quickly, I would stick to EPL. I haven't seen much of him, but perhaps Ben Davies fits the bill. Young, an international, will get better, Bale may encourage him to join and give him tips on settling in. At CB, I would go for Caulker - because whilst he still needs to get better, I believe he will. Plus I believe that he, like Dawson, will make up for weaknesses playing wise with the other parts of being a centre back. I believe that Caulker then would take over Dawson's role and retain it for a long time. RIGHT BACK IS SO NEEDED! I do not know why people sound so content here. Walker has been poor for 2 seasons now. He needs to step up and improve his decision making. His defensive qualities was never his strength, but his attacking side has waned on top of that. He needs competition, and Naughton ain't it. Sell Naughton now. Get someone else in. This guy could be from overseas if need be, but preferably in early twenties. In attack, I would take Remy (versatile, a scorer)- if allowed to leave. But given QPR's promotion, he probably will stay. I'd take Welbeck (versatile) if LVG don't want him, but not Hernandez as I think he is a sub for a reason. Just like Solskjaer, Brian McClair (going a bit back) before him. These guys are not players to build teams around when you are chasing top 4. Squad players. We have plenty of squad players. As for Lamela, as I haven't seen him do anything whatsoever, I cannot put him in my team yet. Not sure how anyone can. On paper he looks good. But on the field, where it matters, he hasn't shown it.
TonyRich
Forget Coentrao, he signed a new contract for Madrid. Left back and centre back are the positions we should be trying all out to fill. This is where our team is lacking quality. Bruno Martins Indi has been mentioned before, he can play central defender and left back. Daley Blind, Umtiti, Ashley Cole, Moreno. CB Toby Ald'wd, Caulker, Kjaer would all be candidates. If we were interested in Remy, why did we not sign him last season if he has a release clause? Everyone here wants Lamela to come good, we want him to turn into a Ronaldo. Hope he gets himself fit and raring to go.
vicspur
Geof: I'm good thanks ... hope you are as well.. I would really like a squad system instead of a first team as such... The more choice we have and the more awe use it the better will it be for us. Chadli, Nabil, Holtby, AT, Chriches all could be used in different reasons in different games... I understand MRP doesn't like to alternate....
Highgatespur
vicspur: Remy was involved in a legal case until recently and this prevented us signing him when QPR did and since.
Highgatespur
High: I agree. If we want to compete on several fronts it’s vital to have a squad that can handle it. If we’re just aiming for domestic success we’d only need a first team and a few subs. I hope MP has aspirations that require a squad mentality!
Geofspurs
For me I would like to get Cristian Tello from Barca for our left wing. Develop Kenny McEvoy under him. he looks class.
I'd be happy with Toby Alderweireld at CB, but I think Verts and Vlad will create a great partnership. be nice rotation options there though depending on who we are playing. (keep Daws for backup to play the likes of stoke! prob Kaboul for another season) also.
Left back I am a fan of Coentrao, but after trying so hard last year, and with no progress on our side, I don't think we would get him. I'll leave him on my wish list. striker wise, I am hoping Ade goes, and not Soldado. replace Ade with Lukaku. Then I'm a happy man.
4-2-3-1 / 4-3-3.

Lloris
Walker, Vlad / Toby, Verts, Coentrao.
Sandro / Capoue, Pauli.
Chadli / Tello , Eriksen, Lamela.
Robbie / Lukaku. we would have an awesome bench too with the likes of Holtby, McEvoy, Zeki, Kane, unpicked of above, Kaboul, Daws, Naughton, Dembele,Siggy.
I am assuming the loan of bentaleb, and the sale of Lennon, Townsend, Rose, Livermore, Ekotto and a few lower fringe / academy players.

I DO NOT WANT REMY
Dublin Hotspur
Geof - heres hoping - that was one of the biggest frustrations of mine with last three holding fort ... hopefully it's not the same with MRP.
Highgatespur
This team taking into account we won't sign another bunch of players and utilise existing more: Loris; walker,Loren, verts, Rodriguez; dembele, paulinho/Sandro; Lamela,Eriksson,Chadli; Ade. Bench: friedel, Dawson, chiriches, sandro/paulinho, siggy, Remy, Soledad.
jhbspur
I'd also buy chambers from Southampton and prob replace walker with him medium term.
Dublin Hotspur
Dublin Hotspur..... Ade: 13 goals and 4 assists in 22 matches. Soldado: 9 goals and 5 assists in 27. Kane: 3 goals and 2 assist in 7.... Why sell Ade?
MAN ON!
Man on, temperament, and he will probably want to head off anyway in my opinion. I believe Soldado scored 11, with 4 assists. missed a few sitters too due to confidence issues, and of his 28 games I believe around half of them were sub ons on about 88 minutes, so not a fair comparison. he will be settled now, and (only) in my opinion, will get back to his ways of scoring shed loads as he did at valencia under Poch, with distribution from the wings and midfield, which was completely lacking under AVB's tenure before Xmas. all considered, had he played rather than being dropped for scoring V Cardiff, and had the distribution early on in the season, his stats would show better than they currently do. however on the bare face of it, without the behind the scenes reasonings, the stats are what they are, and aren't far off Ade's to be fair. they just don't tell the whole story.
Dublin Hotspur
In any case, thats the team I would like to see.
Dublin Hotspur
....Also, Walker has the best stats for any of our defenders. He would be England's first choice in Brazil, if not for injury. Why replace him?
MAN ON!
Genuinely not sure who I want in a left back, but am 100% in agreement that it's our problem position....Rodriguez is a name that has been banded about a lot, a few people on here thinking he's the man, so I'll agree with them as my knowledge of the player is minimal. Moreno is one being linked in the papers, as the scouse deal has apparently stalled. Centre back, I think MoPo will move for Lovren, who I'd be okay with. Left winger, I really have no idea....again, lots of people saying Konoplyanka, but I have my doubts. Striker, GIVE ME LUKAKU!!!! That boy is class and would be perfect for us.....basically, what I'm saying is I don't really know who I want to fill a few of the problem positions, but I know I want to see us fill them!!!!
King26
I want Soldado to stay by the way.....
MAN ON!
I have a feeling we may go 4-3-3, and a very attacking one at that, with Eriksen in the deeper 3 given the freedom of the pitch alongside 2 very defensive players. Lamela off the right, and the new guy off the left
King26
In time Man on, I would, he has no cross, and struggles getting back. I think Chambers is gonna be a star! we should have him, and look to replace Walker with Chambers in the medium term.
Dublin Hotspur
MAN ON! agree, keep Soldado. He and Lamela just need proper coaching imo.....anyone know much about Julian Green at Bayern Munich? Was talk that we were in for him, personally I have no opinion on him!
King26
I was just highlighting that our 3 main forwards records are not so bad given all the circumstances. However most people seem to be against the two that faired better and prefer Roberto. I'm not sure why.
MAN ON!
I dont mind if we get Remy, good player played well last season for Newcastle, altho Lukaku is my first choice. I just don't believe we in for him, nor the stupid rumour about him stalling on a deal with us as he's waiting for Asrenal.
Ossie
I know that mate, you have said it before, but I think Lukaku would be a huge upgrade on Ade, who can be so hit and miss, especially when a contract is settled. I think he will follow the money to Monaco in all honesty, he wouldn't take a 50% pay cut to stay at spurs! and I can't get the image of him and BAE holding the scores up after one of the thrashings by Liverpool! poor form all together. just my opinions as you know ;)
Dublin Hotspur
Ossie, thats true. much as I want him, Chelsea will never sell anyone to Spurs. but as it's a bit of a dream team exercise I'll stick with him.

Cheers for the article BTW Yidmarks…reminds me, must do the laundry tonight!
Dublin Hotspur
Dublin Hotspur... I can't really comment on Chambers but Walker has statistically been our best performing back and that was with him not being at his best last season. I have a lot of time for Kyle and, why replace a player unless it's absolutely necessary.
MAN ON!
Friedel; Naughton, Dawson, Khumalo, Rose; Livermore, Carroll; Mason, Falque, Townsend, Obika....we're gonna win the league !!!
muttley
I'm not washing a thing until next spring! I'm taking a container load with me to Warsaw.......
MAN ON!
Dublin, won't be annoyed if we get Chambers, as I agree, there is bags of potential there, but is he worth the money he'd cost for a position that isn't a real issue atm? With Walker, I have hope....Under Harry, he was superb, when he was given licence to attack....under AVB, he used to get told not to cross the half way line! I can see him being like Seamus Coleman next year, with the right coaching and someone that identifies the lads strengths, and gets him to play to them, I think he can be a real full back
King26
muttley.. I like it but, you'll never win anything with kids! Grandad Brad might keep them in order!
MAN ON!
muttley, with your new look Spurs, it's time for Archer over Brad, surely?!!!
King26
MAN ON - we are not talking about replacing Walker. We are talking about challenging him to return to form. If we have 2 decent RBs instead of just one, then you play the best one. Walker may well play better with the pressure of competition, if the other guy wins the battle, then he plays. If Kyle needs rest in cups etc, play the other guy. If Walker is injured, we do not revert to Naughton. I do not see the negative about getting another RB in.
TonyRich
TonyRich. Ok, that sounds good to me.
MAN ON!
Agree to a point Man on, but he just isn't the finished article for me. Nor is Chambers mind, but I really think, along with many who would be more in the know than me (including Poch) that he will be a great RB. I believe Poch himself said that Shaw is developing into a class player quickly, and at such a young age could world class very soon, but that Chambers was just behind him and had more potential (or words to that effect).
I'm not saying sell Walker, I have loads of time for the fella too. what I am suggesting is that In the medium term I think Chambers could surpass him ability wise. have them both, then we can ship out naught on and let the other kyle and Callum fight it out. what a great rotation option also, and at his age, Callum would be happy with the understudy role IMO. This is fantasy football we are talking here after all…...
Dublin Hotspur
LOL Man on, I'll meet you there!! but shall we leave the laundry til May when we can coincide the trip with watching spurs lift the EL Trophy!!
Dublin Hotspur
Sorry, are we talking football Dublin?
MAN ON!
How old is Chambers?
MAN ON!
Just checked...19. Shaw 18. Get 'em both. It's only money!
MAN ON!
King, I hope you are right about Kyle, proper coaching could be the key. however, I am not sure how much Chambers is valued at, can't be up there with the Lallana's, Shaws and other over priced S'ton players? Sky have him valued at 4m, with a potential of 20m, (Levy would love that) have a look at the link. he's 18 or 19, and would be a great replacement for Naughton right now. with a view to stepping into Kyles shoes in time… great opportunities to play him through rotation, and incase of any more injuries to KW. can't rely on Naughton IMO.

Dublin Hotspur
Man on, talking Europe…. Europa League final in Warsaw next year, and the best ever Eurovision performance from our Polish friends. laundry, football and a bit of good old fashioned perving!
Dublin Hotspur
I think Naughton is a very steady and reliable player but I'm not sure if he will ever progress to a special one.....
MAN ON!
Dublin Hotspur.. You might just call me a dirty old man but I was a dirty young one too. I call that consistency. Something Spurs have lacked for a good while.
MAN ON!
Keep ADE! I saw nothing wrong with his attitude last season ... unless you don’t like enthusiasm and endeavour! Don’t focus on history, focus on what he’s doing NOW.
Geofspurs
http://i1.mirror.co.uk/incoming/article3523954.ece/alternates/s2197/Eurovision-2014.png

agree with that by the way man on, but I would rather have someone with the potential to become special, and he's worked with Poch and his team! double bonus. bring in Callum!
Dublin Hotspur
Geofspurs. Indeed. Ade IN!
MAN ON!
Geof, surely events of 2 months ago are considered history as well.... Last I saw he is in Togo relaxing and taking selfies!
Highgatespur
too risky for me Geof. he did well, not world chantingly well, but well. it was 2 fingers to AVB and showing what he is capable of with contract discussions looming. I know we have all had this discussion so many times, but its just my opinion. we could find ourselves with a striker missing in action soon after the window shuts if we keep him. I say replace him now and build for the future.
Dublin Hotspur
Man On - what do you mean kids? Khumalo is 27 whilst Obika, Livermore, Naughton and Falque are pushing 25. Once you add Dawson and Friedel in that makes my team's average age about 28 :-)
muttley
Lloris Walker Alderwiereld Vertonghen Janmaat Paulinho Sandro Lamela Eriksen Lallana Adebayor...COME ON YOU SPURS!!!
Joe Shaw
Good post Geofspurs!!!
Ossie
mutely.. I realised that after I submitted. Still, at my age anyone under 30 is a youth.....
MAN ON!
Spellcheck wants to shut you up, Muttley!
MAN ON!
Man On - spellcheck is not the first person to want to do that !!!
muttley
Re ADE ... I can only go by what I’ve seen on the pitch. I saw a player that wanted the ball and ran himself ragged chasing opposition players down to get it. I saw a player who was brilliant at holding the ball up until his team-mates sorted themselves out. I also saw a player who seemed to enjoy playing. As I’ve said before, if we’re going to kick players out because of a poor attitude or lack of effort, Ade is a long way from the front of the queue. Well, that’s what I saw anyway. I may change my mind, but only if Ade's performance over a period of time deserves it.
Geofspurs
Wow another future team article... What do posters have against Remy? Thought he started slow but played very well this season and would def step into a top 4 team. Lukaku would be first prize alongside Benteke. Kane could do with a solid loan perhaps, perhaps to QPR in exchange for Remy or to Villa for Benteke? Southampton need to replace Lambert maybe Kane for them. Defence is just too complicated at the moment where Walker is a certainty, Verts will be captain and that leaves Kaboom and Chiri. We will need another CB unless Dawson commits to hanging around but I suspect it will be a youth player. At LB well I'm in the camp of no to Rose or BAE and sell one or both. I honestly dont have faith in Rose but maybe he deserves a chance. New LB is a defo, perhaps Baines? If United get Shaw then I suspect he will need to leave Everton to progress his career. He won't be cheap, 15-18 million but he is the best LB in the PL for me. MF is packed with talent and options. If we want someone versatile James Milner.
Mix26
Dublin, would be okay with Chambers to add competition to Walker, but I am a fan of Walker....If we could get Chambers for say double what we could sell Naughton for, I'd take it. Southampton wont be selling too many though, and once Lallana and Shaw go, they're not going to need the money they could get through selling Chambers so possibly best to move now! I don't think we'll be getting him though.
King26
Yes geof, and last 4 games jogging back from offside positions when possession was lost instead of running back into position. I don't know, hints of the past there, I just don't think I trust him. AVB didn't, Sherwood did, will poch?
Dublin Hotspur
Milner and Baines could do us a world of good.....
MAN ON!
Geof I don't think anyone disagrees re ADE playing some games at that level, I think we are suggesting that only when he feels the urge to play then so be it otherwise his attitude towards Spurs and other clubs (many examples) is he could not care less. I think this stems from competition, he wants to be top dawg no matter what. A difficult player to manage but getting it right could easily get him 20+ goals next season. Hopefully him and MP see eye to eye or the result could be ADE out the door very fast.
Mix26
Dublin ... I remember getting frustrated with Ade in the last couple of games due to being offside so much. I put it down to tiredness and hoped it was not the Defoe influence (lol). He did seem to be playing further forward toward the end. I thought he did better playing just behind the striker ... and, sometimes out of boredom or desperation, just behind the back-line! I think he ran out of position so much because he wanted to get something happening when we had no shape or could not get forward. Anyway. that’s enough about him. Time will tell!
Geofspurs
Lloris Walker Alderweireld Vertonghen Blind Sandro Dembele Lamela Eriksen Konoplyanka Remy
Guraara
Mix ... I know what you mean. Hope it is a 20 goal season!
Geofspurs
ADE on his day is unplayable, on his off day he tweets....
Mix26
What's wrong with Fredericks and Fryers once Pochettino gets to work on them. Doesn't anybody think that is one of the main reasons MP is now our manager. I'm sure Levy is expecting a few youngsters being introduced into the match day squads this season. I think MP will not get many players in this window. Give himself time to evaluate all our players and then get new signings where he thinks the are needed.
longtimespur
I see Mankini has just left Galatasaray... Missed a bullet or was he not a candidate?
Mix26
Longtime, totally agree with that remit. I think this is more of a wish list thing. For me anyway.
Dublin Hotspur
longtimespur. That sounds about right. Let the man get to work and do his best with most of what we already have. No need for major change just yet.
MAN ON!
agree longtimespur, well put.
Mix26
But longtime, while the development boys develop, we still need and deserve quality players in the required positions. One more sleep til the festival starts! Can't wait!
Dublin Hotspur
Tomorrow I'm gonna party like a natural born Brazilian. Samba time in Sao Paulo and SW London!
MAN ON!
Or I might just put my feet up, with a cup of Cocoa...
MAN ON!
My three would be Soldado, Lamela and Chiriches.... I have faith in them next season!!
T.H.F.Chris
Longtime ... That does seem like the sensible way to go.
Geofspurs
Oh play the youngsters, yeah we always hear that on here, but when they do play, after 2 games they getting alot of stick. I can't think of one young player for Spurs in recent time that has been spared this....
Ossie
Who would that be Ossie? Bentaleb?
Mix26
So we go and get a coach whose strength is developing young players and we are going to bring in more and more players rather than get what we have playing to potential. To buy players, we need to move players on. Not for finances but because we have over 30 senior players. How can you develop the young players in the squad and bring through youth when you are further creating a glut of senior players? Why buy Remy before seeing what Pochettino can do with Lennon, Townsend, Chadli and Lamela? Even if AVB were still here I would not be proposing changes. No changes until January, at earliest, unless a player insists on going regardless and we get our valuation. Transfers in should only be if it is the right player at the right price (Umtiti for 7M as an example). The Remy deal smacks of buying a player to sell him on in a year or so. Does he really suit Pochettino's style? Doesn't track back. Hustles one way. How is that a decent signing? How does that make us better than developing Lamela to potential. I just don't get people suggesting we buy players to contend when we have a manager who will take 1-3 years to learn how to balance a roster in four competitions. Makes no sense at all. He has never won anything. He has never coached a team in Europe or four competitions. He develops young players. Why are some expecting better? Living on hope and a prayer regardless of what reality serves. Just like all those who expected top 4 with 9 new faces in the squad and 3 key injuries. Never dull as a Spurs fan. Constant heads in the clouds. Keep expectations in line with the CV and reality and we might all enjoy the next 3-5 years. That's what it's going to take. COYS
peterballb
On a more serious note, whilst I agree with the LB / Centre half requirements I'm less sure about the winger, attacker, scorer requirement. It's obvious that our defence is where the problem is but I still believe that we underrate our attacking players. Let's face it a squad with Soldado, Adebayor, Lamela, Chadli, Eriksen, Paulinho, Capoue, Siggy, Holtby shouldn't be shy of goals. For me, it's about the manager, tactics and formation to get those guys scoring from all angles. I actually think that Paulinho will become free scoring from midfield this season.
muttley
Ossie ... There’s a name for that; it’s called, ‘The Impatient Spurs Supporter Syndrome’ ... and the bad news is, it appears to be contagious!
Geofspurs
There was plenty praise for Townsend, Kane and Bentaleb. Fryers I thought was excellent when he played. No offence but don't u feel they hve to prove themselves in their respective positions? U cannot win a trophy with kids and u certainly cannot leave out full internationals for several games in a row for them. They are loaned out because of the "risk" in playing them. For any top club it's extremely hard to introduce these youngsters and very few get it spot on. What Dim did was exceptionally risky and once again "amateur" at best...
Mix26
Bentalab, Kane, Townsend, Walker, O'Hara, Livermore even Caulker .....Mix
Ossie
Muttley - fully agree with that. Defence scares the life outta me. Sherwood took over from avb and turned us from a non-scoring team that got smacked up into a scoring team that leaked goals and still got smacked up. But at least the change of manager showed that Ade can score, that even Kane can score, that Eriksen is a great player in the making. This latest change of manager could get Lamela, Chadli and co going too. Defence was neglected last season, and Chiriches did not come close to plugging gap left by Caulker's departure and Kaboul's inevitable injury. Concentrate on defence. That is why I would get LB, CB AND RB.
TonyRich
peterbalb - I get the sentiment about waiting until Jan, but I don't think Poch can't confidently fix our back line with the current personnel. He can get lucky and keep the right ones fit unlike his predecessors but that's taking a chance. I believe Walker will come good and I also think Chiriches can be our Ivanovic and cover both RB and centre half. I also rate Vertonghen. Beyond that I'm simply not sure. I know I don't rate Naughton or Dawson and have doubts about Rose, Ekotto and Fryers. I also have doubts about Kaboul's ability to get back to full fitness and get that yard of pace back. When you factor in all of the variables I truly believe Poch should be in the transfer market for better defenders. I can see an argument to leave the rest alone though and sit on our wallets. Perhaps someone like Veljkovic will surprise us and step up into the defender we're missing. He's probably John Stones age so why not.
muttley
peterballb - yes I take a lot of your points there. However Poch is not an overly experienced, so I am not sure where he gets this "play the youngsters" rep from. The only one at Southampton that I can see that he established was Calum Chambers. The others seem to have been playing before he joined. Did he have this rep form his days at Espanyol?
TonyRich
Ozzie of those players I believe Livermore was and never will make the grade. Caulker was a hard pill to swallow for some but he felt he wanted 1st team football sooner rather than waiting. Bentalab has a bright future that's for sure and Kane has only shown what he can do in the last few games. I'm positive with a loan to a PL club he will def get a chance to shine. O'Hara brings back some great debate and one which sadly ended in the player proving the doubters correct. Townsend needs games and will get them under MP. Yes I agree the players will get stick on here but first and foremost they have to impress the boss MP or perhaps MP needs to see what we dont see and improve them. Can you honestly say that the frustrations of Townsend's loose cannon shot did not get to u? Bentalab sadly was one of Dims chosen ones but still he was allowed to start ahead of better players and Dim made a point of it too. Walker moves from strength to strength yet there are frustrations with him too.
Mix26
I cant see MP not getting one or two players in peterball, if there is a target for next season and MP does not sign anyone then we can expect a very iffy season indeed.
Mix26
Mix I agree, Im not saying I wasn't giving some of those mentioned some stick (especially Townsend), its just youngsters seems to be the answer to our problems, when in truth unless the exceptional they end up getting stick, its not easy to blend youngsters into top6 teams.
Ossie
Mix26 ...and Carroll....?
TonyRich
I think that even just one key player who has PL experience and is a natural leader, in whatever position, could be a big help to our young players. An Edgar Davids type character, if you will. Who though, I'm not sure..... Someone to take the bull by the horns and be MP's leader on the pitch. A winner, with a touch of arrogance and plenty of fight. Something we lack I believe....
MAN ON!

The Busby Babes?!
Geofspurs
We had better wait until the WC is over, the dust settles and we know how many of last season's players are still here, and those that have been outed due to "irresistable offers" being impossible to turn down, for the likes of Lloris, Sandro, Paulinho, and Eriksen, but unfortunately not for Soldado, Lamela, Sigurdson or Lennon. Only when we know what's left can we start to build next season's team. I would like to see Cole, Alderweirold, Ince and Bony come into the squad.
Frank
Maybe it's Cole that I'm looking for?
MAN ON!
TonyRich, he gets the rep just the same as Jol could have claimed the same when at Spurs. He played Lennon, Hudd, Jenas, et al who were all kids. But then, what choice did he have? That was a third of the squad and the kids were better than the veterans (even though prone to more inconsistency and errors). He hasn't coached long enough anywhere to suggest what he can do with players who are "in th system". But since people wish to play along, I just don't get that they on one hand laud him for his great development work with Shaw, Lallana, et al (who were, incidentally, already on my and other people's radars before he took the job at Southampton - but let's not let facts get inthe way of a great tale) and yet wish to throw away all this young English dross so that we can spend 10's on millions of GBP on established foreign players. He certainly was not brought in because of his CV of Cup wins, titles and his great ability to manage squads in four competitions. All he has is a supposed ability to develop players and he likes to play a certain attacking fashion (unlike AVB who was so defensive at Porto). So we have players. Most of whom were kijured and/or underachieved last season. So, how about we allow him the 3-5 years to learn his craft while developing the players in the squad and then, as time goes on, acquiring specific players that fill specific needs. This is what his CV suggests he can do. This squad is, IMO, abundantly talented. Let's see what we have before we start throwing things away. Yes, we may well need a CB. We have two young English players in the roster who are LB's or playing the part. We also need a number 2 keeper (I have Brad as number 3). Beyond that, until players start to be sold, there is no room at the inn. All of Lennon, Townsend, Chadli and Lamela are younger than Remy. I don't see the need. Two are also English. Three are better defensively. All four are here and not waiting to see if Arsenal come in for him. Just because it is "silly season" doesn't mean we all have to live up to the title. COYS
peterballb
Ossie ... Matt Busby managed to do very well with a very young team. SAF always brought through a couple of kids each year if my memory is right. I'm not saying bring in 4 or 5 youngsters straight into the team but, if MP thinks they're up to it, why not let 1 or 2 get game time in the second half of games. Assuming we're winning or they can add something different to what's happening on the pitch.... I cannot see any reason that MP needs to buy immediately........... We have a squad that got 6th last season despite AVB's and TS's "best" attempts. I have confidence that our squad, as it is now, is capable of top 4 under the right manager. Whether MP is that right manager or not, only time will tell. Yes we need strengthening across the defence but the rest of the team is capable of doing it. Maybe winning a bit of silverware too. MP must access all the squad before wasting money on unnecessary buys. We haven't seen Lamela, Chadli is great for Belgium and maybe MP will make him great for THFC too.
longtimespur
Give MP time to coach Walker, Chiriches, even Rose!! Who knows what he can make them??????????????
longtimespur
Sorry peterbalb, I agree entirely, could have saved my typing... lol
longtimespur
Ossie, absolutely, 100% agree. Bentaleb needs a challenging loan. Not to be in the side causing issues with Sandro and Capoue and Dembele. You can't have it both ways. Chelsea, City, United and Arsenal don't just stick in raw rookies. They need to make their marks. Lukaku didn't just play so that Torres and Eto'o could sit. It's just not how it works. Januszaj was in the Anderlecht and United Youth systems for 7 years before he got to play and he is also a capped international player. He has earned it. There may be merit to Bentaleb too but not with the players in front of him. Carroll was in the same boat last season. People forget how young Kane is but he got time under Harry and AVB and he earned what he got. That said, it doesn't put him on the pitch and Adebayor in the stands. If we want to see young players, watch the U-21's play or watch teams like Southampton that will likely have to rebuild after they lose players. That will be done with youth. If we wish to challenge for Cups and Titles, it will be on the backs of experienced top quality players. For any youth players to get a real go, they will have to be exceptional. Beyond that, brief cameos here and there and challenging spells on loan. COYS
peterballb
At Spurs, we have a lot of young, yet quite well experienced players. Most of them are Internationals but nearly all of them that are foreign, have very little PL time between them. Without a major calamity they took as to 6th spot. It could have been a lot worse. There is always room for improvement but the talent is already there. A new season, a new start with a new and young head coach, could be the trigger to get them performing with some consistency. If they can buy in to Pochettino's methods and personality, we have a lot to look forward to. It may take half a season of iffy results and a bit of chop and change but, we have the potential and, I look forward to watching this team/squad grow. We can only hope and pray that MP is the man to make it happen. Up the Spurs!
MAN ON!
I did say the same with AVB. Deja vu.......
MAN ON!
One player we seem to forget about is Yago Falque. Is he not still contracted for another year? He had a cracking season on loan in Spain and I would love to give him a shot. I’d rather have him in the squad than put up with another year of Lennon running up and down like a headless plonk!!
hudderspur
Oi, leave Lennon alone.....
MAN ON!
Aaron Lennon, Attacking midfielder / Forward. Three Hundred and Forty Eight Career appearances. Thirty Goals spread over Nine years. The term “stealing a living” doesn’t come close!!
hudderspur
WHL, I can see Poch favouring the wing back and not using natural wingers per say. I can see him utilising Sandro / Capoue to cover the defence when they do fly, and whether its them or the CB's that cover the full back will be up to Poch. Hopefully we won't lose possession so quickly with rifling shots over the bar or losing it in a congested midfield like last season, so actual cover would not be required on a full time basis (which was chaotically the case for most of last season) if the likes of Walker (or Chambers) can cross, or distribute to the attacking line quickly they would have plenty of time to track back them selves. I really think these issues were down to poor strategy and poor coaching last season.
Dublin Hotspur
BTW I actually have an Aaron Lennon Key ring for my house keys, so yeah Loyal servant….he’s just $hi7!! Need to put him next to my Michael Dawson Car Key ring I think.
hudderspur
Kierzo-I said that in a post on another article about Remy, didn't want him anyway and certainly don't want him if the story is true about him waiting for Arsenal to come in.

as for my team choice, rather not say until start of season when I have seen who stays and who goes and who arrives.
BigSpursFan
Remy is a top player, great finisher, will score goals. Hope Arse don't want him, better than anything we've got right now, bar Ade.
Thats Entertainment
I'd like Fabian Schar to come in and battle with Vlad for RCB slot, LB we all know my choice by now, LWF sees either Konoplyanka or Dusan Tadic. As for CF, depends who stays and if any go. If Ade is surplus, Lukaku would be 1st choice, if Soldado to leave, Hernandez from Utd or Jackson Martinez.
Cider spurs
Bear in mind these LW and RW types are not here solely for crosses, most of the emphasis on them this season is to actually link with striker and score goals. Whoever plays left or right has to be capable in front of goal.

WHL. What the frick are you on about? In your entire post!
Dublin Hotspur
I enjoyed the interview, seems like a really nice guy and seems humble and confident in what he and his staff do. Really impressed with how he applied himself. I think the lads are going to really take to him, well those who are serious about playing for us and for the football and not those who are in it for themselves. What did he say he expected. Commitment and positive attitude and they use common sense so players don't need to be afraid but sounds like they will be worked hard. Good on him and I am happy for Fraud as well, good that Poch has embrace him into his set up that shows he is humble, flexible and has a head on his shoulders. I do get a good feeling about this guy. Getting excited

You can tell from the way Poch speaks he is a 'we' and not a 'me me me'. He seems really nice.

So, people are now more positive about Pochettino because he seems like a nice guy. I put forward suggestions on his style of football, how he might set up and, probable tactics but nobody wanted to know. One relaxed and friendly, in-house interview and all is good. Still not much talk of how we might play our football. A lot of talk though on who he should choose to play it.

4-3-1-2 Lloris Walker Alderwiereld Verts Moreno Sandro Holtby Capoue Eriksen Lamela Lukaku Sandro and Capoue in the engine room to break up play and also to cut off play from the opposition FBs where a lot of the attacking play comes from. Holtby will use his energy to put in defensively as well as moving the ball around and picking the passes similar to a DLP role. Eriksen in his best position and with lesser defensive duties that comes with left MF allowing him to play his game an link up with Holtby. Lukaku would be fantastic up front with Lamela free to play the wider role. The lack of width up top picked up by the FB/WB.

I still think that we ought to have 2 teams clearly demarcated with their roles: one to form the base for PL and the other one to form the base for EL and CC. This way we keep the players busy as well as keep the interest going strong; evaluate the the situation Christmas...

For PL:
LLoris, Walker, new LB (hopefully Rodriguez or Davies), Verts, new CB (hopefully Alderweireld or Lovren), Sandro/Capoue, Paulinho, Lamela, Eriksen, new LW (hopefully Konoplyanka); Soldado or Adebayor

For EL+CC:
Friedel and Jordan, Naughton, Fryers, Chriches, Dawson, Townsend, Nabil, Holtby, Dembele, Chadli, Kane or Soldado

with the Development Squad players forming major part of the bench warmers!
Highgatespur
2 goalies for EL highgate..... We should def win that... Lol.
Dublin Hotspur
Dublin Hotspur, due to Brad's age, he is allowed a carer with him in goal.

Keep your eyes out lads n lasses. I've submitted a quick World Cup draw, just a bit of fun, pick a number and a team will be allocated as soon as all 32 numbers have been selected. Would make my part alot easier if we can get the numbers picked sooner rather than later. Won't really be as much fun if all of the numbers aren't picked, but please remember I have to then write all 32 poster names down, their number and team drawn to post later. I wish to do that way before kick off tonight. So if the article goes up, please pick a number that is still available(you'll have to refer to posts to see what's gone, although i will provide updates throughout the day)
