One Step Back; For Two Forward?

One Step Back; For Two Forward?

I seem to recall our discussing the same thing following the appointment of AVB…

Of course this is all just me putting two and two together and perhaps making five, but when we read platters comments about our new manager, we not only read that they rate him highly, but that he also demands extreme fitness and hard work. In todays game, it is rare to see a top flight professional that isn`t extremely fit, however is there also a reality that players might be fit, but are they motivated to push through the pain barrier and fight to be fitter? In his first interview yesterday, Pochettino was quick to stress that their was common sense to developing fitness, but do the players once again need to embrace a new philosophy and how quickly and positively will that happen?

Without knowing the individual motivation and hunger of our players, we don`t yet know the answer to that question, but you imagine a player that it yearning for a move, might not embrace the hard miles expected of him, that someone that is still hungry and ambitious to impress the new management. We can obviously make instant judgements on players like Vertonghen, Dembele and a few others that might not want to push themselves too hard, however, the case might be that one of their gripes was that their team mates weren`t professional and hungry enough, therefore Pochettino might actually be just what they were hoping for.

I do worry that players returning from a hard World Cup, might struggle with a high intensity pre season and this might be a good early test for Poch, as to how he manages his players, but also how committed they are to the club. The majority of players who are on World Cup duty have had question marks over their Tottenham futures, so will this be used as a simple excuse by them or even the management to cash in and look for hungry new faces with things to prove? I do however feel that their injuries or fall outs with Sherwood, at the end of last season, might actually work in their and our favour, as they have already had a break from football, which will hopefully have recharged their batteries.

What you do hope is that with the majority of our squad missing out on playing in Brazil, they will already be thinking of upping their work and looking to impress the new coaches. We are fortunate to have a good number of players that look to be natural athletes. Players like Kyle Walker, who can run all day. With greater defensive awareness, you would like to think that he will love the high work-rate and all action demands, but also still be smarting from a frustrating season and also missing out for England. Is he just the type of player that could benefit from hard work, coupled with tactical awareness?

So far in his managerial career, Poch hasn`t really proved to be great with big names and bigger egos. is this a problem for him or is he just been at clubs where they couldn`t attract these players and the ones they could, either saw it as a stepping stone, already in decline or were difficult characters anyway? I don`t get the impression that Spurs currently have too many difficult individuals, but do have ones that need to be switched on to a plan and motivated by it. Though I still applaud, Sherwood for ruffling a few feathers, is it now a time for Poch to inspire, but also leave them in no doubt as to what is expected. However to achieve that, you have to assume that the players want to be at the club in the first place...

After the turmoil of last 18 or so months, the biggest hurdle for Poch will be to retain key players. He will need more than a televised pep talk.

If it's what poch wants from his highly paid team, it's what he gets! I would blow a goat for that sort of cash each week! I think he will get the respect of the players very quickly, and vice Versa. I'm feeling pretty good about his appointment and excited for the next few years! Give the man time, as critical says, and I can see serious progress. I am sure he will sell his program to the players, and any that don't cut it or aren't up to it ability wise will surely fall to the wYside! If players do want to move, so be it, but showing no effort will not help their appeal! Nice article, cheers ox. By the way I was excited when AVB took over also. I hope it ends happier with poch. He seems to have the charisma and the strategy! Good mix!

Gotta be honest couldn't understand clearly everything he said...but at the same time I kinda didn't care, there was definitely something about him, the right complement of saying the right things, being demanding of the players and also being able to have a laugh. Already I think he's someone the players are really going to take to, and the reports that he's contacted Ade and told him he wants to build the team around him shows him as someone who's very much aware of players individual characters.

This appointment has given me the highest level of anticipation since the appointment of Santini!!! We know how long that lasted. Not my first choice but has my unreserved support - hopefully no own goals though! The interview was the first sign of success - caught us all on the hop. Hopefully this is the way forward for the club - business done behind closed doors. Positive about Freund's appointment. Await the 3 signings ... COYMS!!!!

It will be interesting to see that if we do indeed take a step or two backwards, will supporters really show patience and give the man time. It should, I suppose, depend on the football we play and if there are good signs of improvement. Does a young and relatively inexperienced guy have what it takes to command respect from certain players, just because he seems like a nice chap. The public persona does not always signify like-ability away from the camera and on the training pitch. Being nice does not necessarily command respect anyway. Work-shy players, if we have any, may just get the kick up the butt they need or they could turn out to be a real negative influence on the squad. A lot of us fans do seem to favour a non-performer with potential, to a hard worker who is not seen as 'top-class'. What will Pochettino make of them? Contractually, time is on his side but in the harsh, real world of results, progress on the pitch and instant success, time could run out, before the seasons end. Will hard work sort the men from the boys? I bloody well hope so. Up the Yid Army..... At Ease!

Fitness is a given these days, you're not going to produce a team that runs the opposition into the ground. I know wild optimism is the norm with each new managerial appointment at our club but the new man has done nothing in his career so far to justify it. My biggest worry is the way his teams seem to start strong and finish badly because he seems incapable of rotating properly and so burns out his core players. On the other hand the idea players can just get up and go is ridiculous. If a club is interested in signing one of our players at about half what he's worth he's going nowhere and so far I haven't seen anything sugesting clubs with serious money to spend are taking much interest.

Spurs50, I agree with the 3 inward signings, hopefully LB,CB LW. Out goings I would hope to keep it less then three from last years squad and maybe a few loanees. This window should not be about massive change but more consolidation and assessment of where we are. January for the clear out and recruitment next summer. Measn a long time frame for Pochettino to implement his vision but thats what the club needs to move forward.

Jod, the Southampton players, old and young all pretty much said poch had taken them to the next level of fitness and certainly for the kids got them grounded and feeling like better people as well as better players. Reckon that can't be a bad thing. I reckon a lot of injuries last season generated from poor coaching and a questionable medical team treating them. All I can say is we will see. Oh, and I agree about the optimism from fans that comes with a new appointment. But there is always an exception to the rule, which for most, reared it's head in December.

Fingers crossed for him...on the subject of fitness...yes they are all pretty fit..if that is his purpose in double sessions then we may be in trouble...but I don't think it is...I'm hoping the sessions are to drill the players in what is expected as a unit....he mentioned common sense in regards to training, that has to be the watchword...we'll know by Feb if the players are all burned out or still fresh if it's been applied correctly...

Mentioning Dim in most of your articles Ox, let's leave it out shall we. The world cup players will ultimately be at the end of a long season, and tough conditions but their fitness will be fine. They will get a few extra weeks off no doubt and rightly so. I think Paulinho will perhaps get a little more time off. As for the fitness u need your players to be as fit as possible or get them to a level of performance which is enough to keep the right formation. The very famous VDV is a classic example of how fitness can effect the team. Personally on looking at our players I dont have any worries in terms of "lung capacity" as they are all young and tough. The players who will struggle is perhaps Naughton and Rose. I feel it was important that MP brought his coaching staff with as he rightly pointed out how NB they are to him and the team. As far as the head coach goes the players will show their respect but it's the rest that will need settling in.

I agree with Jod, there is nothing in Pochittino's previous managerial history to suggest that some of the wild expectation, and optomism, is justified. He has dealt before with young up and coming players, nearly players, and aging players who have seen better days, at Southampton. Whether seasoned international players will readily accept his somewhat extreme views on fitness or not is debatable. One thing that isn't for argument is that his career win stats and Southampton win stats of below 40% will not be acceptable at Spurs, he needs to get to 55%+, how he does it is up to him, but do it he must. He can talk the talk, but can he walk the walk, and can he handle coming from an also ran outfit, into the limelight at a big club, we shall see.

I was well impressed with his interview, body language, what he said, how he said it and I got a really good feeling about this guy. I was happy when AVB was appointed mainly because I was sick of HR and AVB was young and I thought a manager for the future, that didn't happen, but I didn't get the same 'good' feeling about AVB as I do with Poch. I get the same feeling, long term with him being young, added with PL experience but there is something deeper I feel about this guy. My only reservation is will he be given time. Rodgers had a average first season at Liverpool, they didn't go into a kneee jerk reaction or fall out, they stood by him and look at last season. Levy and the club and the FANS need to do the same with Poch. I see it if we finish top six for the first two season then that is acceptable. First season to work with what we have may be a few changes, get his philosophy across, see who is up for it and see how good our players actually are, we still don't really know. Second season consolidate, bring in the players he feels will complete his jigsaw, making sure he is happy with the signings, and for there to be some continuity and hopefully progress, everyone at all levels starting to understand what he is trying to achieve and then third season is the season we should hopefully be seeing rewards.

BigSpursFan - Rodgers was given time because they went from a declining Benitez to Hodgson, and then to a failing Dalgish. 7th, 6th, 8th, 7th (Rodgers). Rodgers' 7th placed season was pretty much the average finish for Liverpool in those 4 years. No reason to sack for that. Poch is taking over from 4th (Harry), 5th (AVB), 6th (AVB/Tim). Poch should be given time if he finishes 4th-6th., which he should be able to do given our squad and its potential.

Frank what do u mean "nothing" ??? Of course there is a view of optimism and wild expectations. It's as justified as your less optimistic view of the guy. U have your win stats and people can point to the logic of his football philosophies. The MAIN reason he has got the job as head coach of THFC. What we know is he is a proven fan favourite, plays a high intensity attacking football and improves places physically, mentally and all round ability. Most importantly was the players response to his skills and how much they will miss the man. Without being "optimistic" one can expect some positive coming from THFC next season... wether or not u can handle that is up for debate ;-)

Mix26 - I'd say a couple of places lower than they did, Adkins wasn't doing a bad job. Point is it doesn't really matter, fifth or seventeenth makes very little difference. Either you stay up or you don't, either you get champions league or you don't. As we've found out in the past few years cracking the top four is a very different job to being the best of the rest.

A promising start to keeping Steffen Freund for continuity, I hope it works. The MAJOR factor in the new manager's success or failure will be support from the fans when 2-0 nil down at home against say Stoke or West Brom. following a poor run. If the booing continues and substitutions like the Man Utd home game are booed (when still in with a chance to win the match) then roll on the next Manager!.

jod they finished 15 points higher from 2012 season, above seasoned PL teams like Newcastle, stoke, villa and Wet Spam. They finished behind the teams all vying for top 4. They had a better goal diff than us and scored considerably more goals than those below them. I think it's fair to say NOBODY expected them to finish in 8th or compete in the top half of the table last season. The same as nobody expected Everton Liverpool to punch above their weight. A reasonably good position for us next season should be 5th but with a bit of good luck we could easily be 3rd -4th.

Apparently we asked Southampton if we could talk to Lovren and were refused a few days after Poch came over. Lovren put in a written request almost immediately. Some notes of caution though,
1) we are not the only ones in for him,
2) Southampton haven't accepted his request yet and
3) they will ask a high premium for him as he is only in year 1 of a 4 year contract.

Nothing to suggest he can succeed. Nothing to suggest, that in time, he can succeed (same for AVB). Will we give Pochettino the time needed to succeed? 3-5 years folks. If he keeps us in Europe next year he has done a great job. Expectations need to dovetail with reality. If we can just enjoy the footie and leave him to it, he seems to have the ability and is clearly liked by his players (as was AVB).
