'If It's Football, It's Vital'

One Step Back; For Two Forward?

I seem to recall our discussing the same thing following the appointment of AVB…

Of course this is all just me putting two and two together and perhaps making five, but when we read platters comments about our new manager, we not only read that they rate him highly, but that he also demands extreme fitness and hard work. In todays game, it is rare to see a top flight professional that isn`t extremely fit, however is there also a reality that players might be fit, but are they motivated to push through the pain barrier and fight to be fitter? In his first interview yesterday, Pochettino was quick to stress that their was common sense to developing fitness, but do the players once again need to embrace a new philosophy and how quickly and positively will that happen?

Without knowing the individual motivation and hunger of our players, we don`t yet know the answer to that question, but you imagine a player that it yearning for a move, might not embrace the hard miles expected of him, that someone that is still hungry and ambitious to impress the new management. We can obviously make instant judgements on players like Vertonghen, Dembele and a few others that might not want to push themselves too hard, however, the case might be that one of their gripes was that their team mates weren`t professional and hungry enough, therefore Pochettino might actually be just what they were hoping for.

I do worry that players returning from a hard World Cup, might struggle with a high intensity pre season and this might be a good early test for Poch, as to how he manages his players, but also how committed they are to the club. The majority of players who are on World Cup duty have had question marks over their Tottenham futures, so will this be used as a simple excuse by them or even the management to cash in and look for hungry new faces with things to prove? I do however feel that their injuries or fall outs with Sherwood, at the end of last season, might actually work in their and our favour, as they have already had a break from football, which will hopefully have recharged their batteries.

What you do hope is that with the majority of our squad missing out on playing in Brazil, they will already be thinking of upping their work and looking to impress the new coaches. We are fortunate to have a good number of players that look to be natural athletes. Players like Kyle Walker, who can run all day. With greater defensive awareness, you would like to think that he will love the high work-rate and all action demands, but also still be smarting from a frustrating season and also missing out for England. Is he just the type of player that could benefit from hard work, coupled with tactical awareness?

So far in his managerial career, Poch hasn`t really proved to be great with big names and bigger egos. is this a problem for him or is he just been at clubs where they couldn`t attract these players and the ones they could, either saw it as a stepping stone, already in decline or were difficult characters anyway? I don`t get the impression that Spurs currently have too many difficult individuals, but do have ones that need to be switched on to a plan and motivated by it. Though I still applaud, Sherwood for ruffling a few feathers, is it now a time for Poch to inspire, but also leave them in no doubt as to what is expected. However to achieve that, you have to assume that the players want to be at the club in the first place...

Time....give him time! COYS!
Critical_Spur
He will be our new Rodgers, Martinez, Poulis.......may be a future Wenger, Ferguson!
Critical_Spur
WC will affect LVG's team-building and pre-season at United. So on par with our 'nearest' challengers for top-4!
Critical_Spur
After the turmoil of last 18 or so months, the biggest hurdle for Poch will be to retain key players. He will need more than a televised pep talk.
Critical_Spur
If it's what poch wants from his highly paid team, it's what he gets! I would blow a goat for that sort of cash each week! I think he will get the respect of the players very quickly, and vice Versa. I'm feeling pretty good about his appointment and excited for the next few years! Give the man time, as critical says, and I can see serious progress. I am sure he will sell his program to the players, and any that don't cut it or aren't up to it ability wise will surely fall to the wYside! If players do want to move, so be it, but showing no effort will not help their appeal! Nice article, cheers ox. By the way I was excited when AVB took over also. I hope it ends happier with poch. He seems to have the charisma and the strategy! Good mix!
Dublin Hotspur
Gotta be honest couldn't understand clearly everything he said...but at the same time I kinda didn't care, there was definitely something about him, the right complement of saying the right things, being demanding of the players and also being able to have a laugh. Already I think he's someone the players are really going to take to, and the reports that he's contacted Ade and told him he wants to build the team around him shows him as someone who's very much aware of players individual characters.
flipper
Yes flipper. I think he has an idea of how he wants to set up and with who. Preseason will be vital, as will the run to Xmas. I don't think we will see as much chopping and changing, and players out of position as last season!
Dublin Hotspur
Good eveing all,i think the ones that wont be turned on by the new fitness pre season training will be few and with the squad we have i dont think they will be missed, every year i get goose bumps because it is a new start to the season, but this year i have goose bumps on my goose bumps if you know wot i mean, the world cup does not help but that applies to all teams, i say COYS

So what he's daid is his big plan is to get the lads to run around abit? I thought thought that was Harrys philosophy as well?

This appointment has given me the highest level of anticipation since the appointment of Santini!!! We know how long that lasted. Not my first choice but has my unreserved support - hopefully no own goals though! The interview was the first sign of success - caught us all on the hop. Hopefully this is the way forward for the club - business done behind closed doors. Positive about Freund's appointment. Await the 3 signings ... COYMS!!!!

It will be interesting to see that if we do indeed take a step or two backwards, will supporters really show patience and give the man time. It should, I suppose, depend on the football we play and if there are good signs of improvement. Does a young and relatively inexperienced guy have what it takes to command respect from certain players, just because he seems like a nice chap. The public persona does not always signify like-ability away from the camera and on the training pitch. Being nice does not necessarily command respect anyway. Work-shy players, if we have any, may just get the kick up the butt they need or they could turn out to be a real negative influence on the squad. A lot of us fans do seem to favour a non-performer with potential, to a hard worker who is not seen as 'top-class'. What will Pochettino make of them? Contractually, time is on his side but in the harsh, real world of results, progress on the pitch and instant success, time could run out, before the seasons end. Will hard work sort the men from the boys? I bloody well hope so. Up the Yid Army..... At Ease!
MAN ON!

Michael Jackson did well with the moon walk.....was that 10 forward but kept going backwards?!....Must be Levy I am thinking of!
Critical_Spur
Damn time zones!
Slurms McKenzie
Like all spurs fans I'm hoping this turns out to be a epic appointment, the interview does really mean a whole pile at this stage other then he has given it. I just pray we see a return ot proper football where we actually defend and attack as a unit and do it from the first whistle to the last.
Slurms McKenzie
It is 9-05 in the eveing at NZ so getting up 6-30 am friday morning and watch opening match cant wait, i hope Poch puts arm round Sandro because he could be vital next season, i expect my be 2/3 players coming in at most, and my be 3/4 going, get that striker and centre half in and we are all good
spurs50yrs
Pochettino had the respect of the players at both Espanyol and Southampton so I expect him to have a similar impact with the players with us. Will he cope with the bigger players and the bigger ego's, we will find out but he seems like he is up for the challenge.
Kong
Fitness is a given these days, you're not going to produce a team that runs the opposition into the ground. I know wild optimism is the norm with each new managerial appointment at our club but the new man has done nothing in his career so far to justify it. My biggest worry is the way his teams seem to start strong and finish badly because he seems incapable of rotating properly and so burns out his core players. On the other hand the idea players can just get up and go is ridiculous. If a club is interested in signing one of our players at about half what he's worth he's going nowhere and so far I haven't seen anything sugesting clubs with serious money to spend are taking much interest.
jod
Spurs50, I agree with the 3 inward signings, hopefully LB,CB LW. Out goings I would hope to keep it less then three from last years squad and maybe a few loanees. This window should not be about massive change but more consolidation and assessment of where we are. January for the clear out and recruitment next summer. Measn a long time frame for Pochettino to implement his vision but thats what the club needs to move forward.
Slurms McKenzie
Jod, the Southampton players, old and young all pretty much said poch had taken them to the next level of fitness and certainly for the kids got them grounded and feeling like better people as well as better players. Reckon that can't be a bad thing. I reckon a lot of injuries last season generated from poor coaching and a questionable medical team treating them. All I can say is we will see. Oh, and I agree about the optimism from fans that comes with a new appointment. But there is always an exception to the rule, which for most, reared it's head in December.
Dublin Hotspur
No Dublin there was optimism then too it just died out very quickly.
Slurms McKenzie
Fingers crossed for him...on the subject of fitness...yes they are all pretty fit..if that is his purpose in double sessions then we may be in trouble...but I don't think it is...I'm hoping the sessions are to drill the players in what is expected as a unit....he mentioned common sense in regards to training, that has to be the watchword...we'll know by Feb if the players are all burned out or still fresh if it's been applied correctly...
shedboy2
we needed to hear from pochettino yesterday.it was getting eery
tarkan mardinCOYS
Slurms i agree, i was thinking of livermore, Naughton and one other so nothing major, and yes wait till new year and see who fits the new style of play
spurs50yrs
There is also a new bunch of coaches that Poch has brought in with him, so teamwork is the key, not one man's vision. It's easy to blame the man in charge but it should be a collective responsibility. No easy task but I look forward to see what happens.
MAN ON!

Mentioning Dim in most of your articles Ox, let's leave it out shall we. The world cup players will ultimately be at the end of a long season, and tough conditions but their fitness will be fine. They will get a few extra weeks off no doubt and rightly so. I think Paulinho will perhaps get a little more time off. As for the fitness u need your players to be as fit as possible or get them to a level of performance which is enough to keep the right formation. The very famous VDV is a classic example of how fitness can effect the team. Personally on looking at our players I dont have any worries in terms of "lung capacity" as they are all young and tough. The players who will struggle is perhaps Naughton and Rose. I feel it was important that MP brought his coaching staff with as he rightly pointed out how NB they are to him and the team. As far as the head coach goes the players will show their respect but it's the rest that will need settling in.
Mix26
No probs 123. It's a lot more glam than rte for sure! Interesting tweets about it from our neighbours who didn't understand the rules, but found it exciting to watch! Much as I despise sending €100 a month to Murdoch, I couldn't live without it.
Dublin Hotspur
Pochettino..... Blue and white Army!
MAN ON!
Dublin Hotspur - Given where Southampton finished there are only two conclusions. Either the players were talking bull***** or fitness doesn't get you as far as some people think.
jod
OK mate.
Dublin Hotspur
Agree with you there Mix. Think many will hope that the stability will settle itself down - been missing of a while...
Highgatespur
I agree with Jod, there is nothing in Pochittino's previous managerial history to suggest that some of the wild expectation, and optomism, is justified. He has dealt before with young up and coming players, nearly players, and aging players who have seen better days, at Southampton. Whether seasoned international players will readily accept his somewhat extreme views on fitness or not is debatable. One thing that isn't for argument is that his career win stats and Southampton win stats of below 40% will not be acceptable at Spurs, he needs to get to 55%+, how he does it is up to him, but do it he must. He can talk the talk, but can he walk the walk, and can he handle coming from an also ran outfit, into the limelight at a big club, we shall see.
Frank
jod where were Southampton expected to finish?
Mix26
I was well impressed with his interview, body language, what he said, how he said it and I got a really good feeling about this guy. I was happy when AVB was appointed mainly because I was sick of HR and AVB was young and I thought a manager for the future, that didn't happen, but I didn't get the same 'good' feeling about AVB as I do with Poch. I get the same feeling, long term with him being young, added with PL experience but there is something deeper I feel about this guy. My only reservation is will he be given time. Rodgers had a average first season at Liverpool, they didn't go into a kneee jerk reaction or fall out, they stood by him and look at last season. Levy and the club and the FANS need to do the same with Poch. I see it if we finish top six for the first two season then that is acceptable. First season to work with what we have may be a few changes, get his philosophy across, see who is up for it and see how good our players actually are, we still don't really know. Second season consolidate, bring in the players he feels will complete his jigsaw, making sure he is happy with the signings, and for there to be some continuity and hopefully progress, everyone at all levels starting to understand what he is trying to achieve and then third season is the season we should hopefully be seeing rewards.
BigSpursFan
Yup Highgate I'm really hoping for a decent run but one without too much fuss and controversy. It was actually nice not being involved or more so stressed the last month of the season. We seem to attract a lot of attention sometimes and yes some stability is just what we need.
Mix26
The interview was good, alas it could have been great. If only he donned the Gilet.
Cider spurs
BigSpursFan - Rodgers was given time because they went from a declining Benitez to Hodgson, and then to a failing Dalgish. 7th, 6th, 8th, 7th (Rodgers). Rodgers' 7th placed season was pretty much the average finish for Liverpool in those 4 years. No reason to sack for that. Poch is taking over from 4th (Harry), 5th (AVB), 6th (AVB/Tim). Poch should be given time if he finishes 4th-6th., which he should be able to do given our squad and its potential.
TonyRich
Frank what do u mean "nothing" ??? Of course there is a view of optimism and wild expectations. It's as justified as your less optimistic view of the guy. U have your win stats and people can point to the logic of his football philosophies. The MAIN reason he has got the job as head coach of THFC. What we know is he is a proven fan favourite, plays a high intensity attacking football and improves places physically, mentally and all round ability. Most importantly was the players response to his skills and how much they will miss the man. Without being "optimistic" one can expect some positive coming from THFC next season... wether or not u can handle that is up for debate ;-)
Mix26
Mix26 - I'd say a couple of places lower than they did, Adkins wasn't doing a bad job. Point is it doesn't really matter, fifth or seventeenth makes very little difference. Either you stay up or you don't, either you get champions league or you don't. As we've found out in the past few years cracking the top four is a very different job to being the best of the rest.
jod
A promising start to keeping Steffen Freund for continuity, I hope it works. The MAJOR factor in the new manager's success or failure will be support from the fans when 2-0 nil down at home against say Stoke or West Brom. following a poor run. If the booing continues and substitutions like the Man Utd home game are booed (when still in with a chance to win the match) then roll on the next Manager!.

Sorry for off topic...Any takers for the World Cup draw?. 8 numbers left on the World Cup raw article. C'mon help us out here!. ;-)

Frank, from your post, one of the main questions is missing is will the supporters / fans of the club walk the walk by supporting the club w/o finding faults in each and every corner ? Supporting wholeheartedly is a lot easier than finding faults at everything! COYMS!!!!

jod they finished 15 points higher from 2012 season, above seasoned PL teams like Newcastle, stoke, villa and Wet Spam. They finished behind the teams all vying for top 4. They had a better goal diff than us and scored considerably more goals than those below them. I think it's fair to say NOBODY expected them to finish in 8th or compete in the top half of the table last season. The same as nobody expected Everton Liverpool to punch above their weight. A reasonably good position for us next season should be 5th but with a bit of good luck we could easily be 3rd -4th.
Mix26
sorry dude.
Dublin Hotspur
BSF - I'm in agreement with TonyRich - we have the squad in place, the structure in place ana without all the shenanigans of the past year I hope MRP will agree and meet the club's aspiration of aiming and achieving CL in the near future. We have got to aspire to the highest level of achievement. We can't afford to fall back - we need to keep moving forwards.

@DH its not rocket science simple maths though lol a goal is worth 3 over the bar. also the commentary on sky is a bunch if yes men, RTE pundits say it as it is an call it as it, it dont matter ho you are.

Who: Grey Fox
Where: SC
When: 12th June

Apparently we asked Southampton if we could talk to Lovren and were refused a few days after Poch came over. Lovren put in a written request almost immediately. Some notes of caution though,
1) we are not the only ones in for him,
2) Southampton haven't accepted his request yet and
3) they will ask a high premium for him as he is only in year 1 of a 4 year contract.

Dublin, your description of your mates understanding of the rules - reminds me of myself in the 80s - just had to watch the game to understand the game - the same with NFL ... those who thought of the rules I think left it to others to write it all all down! I like the atmosphere in those games - liked going to lansdowne Road...

Nothing to suggest he can succeed. Nothing to suggest, that in time, he can succeed (same for AVB). Will we give Pochettino the time needed to succeed? 3-5 years folks. If he keeps us in Europe next year he has done a great job. Expectations need to dovetail with reality. If we can just enjoy the footie and leave him to it, he seems to have the ability and is clearly liked by his players (as was AVB). Pochettino's biggest success will be winning over the fans and keeping the board behind him. I will give him time. Will the other Spurs fans. I will not deign to question him until the January window closes. COYS

AVB, brackets or otherwise, was not sacked by Spurs. Don't let little things like facts get in the way of your story. He and Spurs came to a mutual decision to no longer work together . This allowd both to walk away in better positions. Sacked he would have been due all his money but proscribed from working elsewhere for a longer period of time. Quitting would have seen him walk away from all of his money and he was never going to do that. His contract might well have still limited him from seeking employment elsewhere for a period of time. The resulting mutual agreement was arrived at (so far as I can guess) because he was not willing to play who ENIC wanted or how ENIC wanted and ENIC were not willing to allow the manager they selected to do the job his way. Thus, no manager ready to take the job. They both agreed to disagree and were both allowed to continue on with favourable terms. Wasn't sacked, didn't quit. Left by mutual agreement. COYS

Mix26 - By no stretch of the imagination can West Ham be described as a "seasoned PL team", Villa seemed to be in self destruct mode, as did Newcastle. Stoke achieved their best ever finish, they made the top half. Your idea of what constitutes the serious sides in the premier league seems bizzare. Just because you want to believe the incoming manager has already achieved something significant doesn't make it so.
jod
And yet they beat us three times last season, uh jod ?
Arky
MP is an Argi international, and spanish team player / manager, with UK PL at Southampton, and our squad have played them 2 last season. So he has more credibility than AVB, in that he has played professionally since a young lad. Now I expect Lamela, Robble will stay and play as we know they can. I am hopeful we can be up in top 5 all season, .. and finally beat the Gooners twice in the league .. with a very good run to semi finals of Euro league , and FA cup....COYS

Fabregas to Chelsea for £30M, that figure sounds familiar, it shows what great value for money Erik Lamela was, and Soldado @ £26M for that matter. I don't think anybody will have to make excuses for Fabregas for failing to perform.
Frank
For goodness sake rank, the lad got injured ... haven't we had enough discussions on that ?!!

Highgatespur
Yes Highgate, any genuine spurs fans will agree...
Block D Spurs
No credibility at all in winning a treble. Everyone's doing it. It's really easy. Sorry, I do not buy that in any sport. In fact, I would suggest, that by and large, the better a player one was, the worse a manager/coach they are. Probably largely to do with the fact that they xpect their players to be able to do what they did. There are exceptions, to be sure, but whether one played a sport professionally really means bubkas when it comes to respect as a manager. Whole different set of parameters. I expect as none of the players purchased last 2 seasons will be going anywhere unless they absolutely want out and we get the market valuation we expect. Soldado and Lamela stand no chance on the second of those criteria so they will surely be stayig. If memory serves, AVB also speaks and understands Spanish, but then that wrecks the story. AVB did not lack respect from the players, he lacked respect from the fans and the board. That's a whole different thing. COYS
peterballb
Highgatespur, how the bloody hell did he get so badly injured to be unavailable for half a fecking season, he didn't play. Did he injure his bloody back on his Playstation, or was it a convenient excuse to deflect questions about his non selection.
Frank
And Fabregas will be paid more than double what our top wage earner makes. When his contract runs down he will be 32. Arsenal fans must be ecstatic. COYS
peterballb
Frank, there was, by many accounts a muscular issue. When he first came, AVB was fairly specific that he did not feel that Lamela deserved to play based on his effort and that he hoped that his family joining him in London would help with that. Lamela then played a bit but was then injured for the balance of the season. I think he only got back in to training in the last month of the season, and liht training at that. He would not be the first to fall prey to the belief tht they had already made it. Bentley and Bent are probably two great examples of players who stopped improving the second they signed their deals. Soldado is, by all accounts hungry to prove last season was an abherration and the sounds coming out of the Lamela camp seem to be similar. I fully expect both to show why we paid what we did and if Lamela hits his potential, he will seem a bargain. COYS

Frank, i don't know to answer that question bur all I know it won't go away if we keep at HIM - I'm sure it wasn't fault was it - we have got to look forwards ... we just can't keep picking at whats gone wrong... a new man in charge let's see what happens otherwise we just might as well go home, shut the door, turn off the lights with the duvet over our heads!!! Let's see what happens.

thfc1882whi - all this is based on ? Conjecture I presume ? My first chhoive was FdB - we didn't get him .... now hat MRP has been chosen lets get behind the man FFS!!!!!

Yes.. we all need to support our club manager and players.. a clean slate now, then we can see the difference in the team / squad. I also ask... when at WHL games we try no get back to the old massive support.. Singing when the spurs..we are tottenham... and COYS before the team is in warm up...the tunnel / dressing room, and when walking onto the pitch, and during the game.. It is this that gives our players heart, and motivation...so lets be the twelfth man at WHL.. and out do Manure and their twelve people on the pitch at Old trafford.. lol.. COYS

All those that didn't get behind our last manager should not be insisting that others get behind the new one.
MAN ON!
Meeeeaow!!! Says who ? A real boss wouldn't constantly criticise the players in public... Levy's 'L' plate mistake - never to be repeated.... He's gone!! - cryers please do the sobbing in the corner - please dispose the used tissues like Levy did to the actor.... Don't care about him ? Heckaslike -

Nice response Highgate but I wasn't addressing you personally, so why are you back digging at me again? I shall ignore your bitching as I have done several times over the last couple of weeks. Just keep it Schtum and we can both be happy. Think about it, if you feel the right to complain about one man, why on earth should you expect others not to be the same if they're not keen on the new man?
MAN ON!
I'm talking about hypocrisy not Mr Sherwood....
MAN ON!
thfc1882whl, I don't disagree with you about messing up every chance we have had to step up.... we have always known that we are an investment for ENIC - never in doubt - but surely you must have noted our position in League now is regularly higher than it used to be ... we haven't been out of top 6 for a while now... As for your position, I don't see why and how you can decry that Pochettino is there for your stated purpose... as I said it's based on you conjecturing nothing real is it ? Your feelings are yours and real but you must agree that they are based on nothing concrete... we've had a management calamity with a novice in charge and Levy did the right thing in getting rid IMO... All managers deserve to be backed by us supporters UNTIL they show contempt for the club through having contempt for the supporters, players or its values. I am not going to devalue Pochettino's standing even before the man has met the players. Lets wait and see... as a true supporter I am sure you will want this man succeeding, if you can't give it a chance of it happening - I don't think any discussion or anything can aid your diversion from your stance. I don't think that there's any chance of you changing your from your seemingly entrenched position.

I don't see any evidence of Spurs being asset stripped and please don't devalue your POV by mentioning the Venkys... As far as I am concerned this is the last chance saloon for Levy, not ENIC, to show that he understands that he has failed the club to step up at the appropriate rate. We need to speed up the rate certainly - but if you think the club's motto is dead - is it worth the argument? Good night

ManOn! Please don't give yourself the privilege of me digging at you, I was just responding to the point you made straight after my point to the previous point .. Read my comments as you do so avidly - the 'pretend one' didn't follow the values of the club by criticising the players ... Pochettino hasn't done that. As far as the 'digging' comments go - just have a look at the history of your derisory comments towards my comments.... hypocrisy ? one knows all about that don't we? Please follow your own advice "Just keep it Schtum" now theres a good fella.
Highgatespur
So how many snide comments have you directed to me since You told me that we should 'move on'? I've commented on one or two of your posts bu,t I've not been derisory at all. If you feel I have then you are wrong. Now take your own advice please and move on.
MAN ON!
Ask me questions, say I'm wrong and then say 'move on' hmmmm ... lets stay 'moved on' this time please...
