'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Bringing the Cheque book to the World Cup

The World Cup of 2014 is now upon us. This veritable feast of football will take place in Brazil, the spiritual home of the beautiful game when once again 32 teams from all over the globe will compete for the biggest prize of all. Millions of people around the world will be watching from their sofas, their favourite bars or even from their work break room in anticipation as to who will lift the famous trophy aloft come the 13th July.

Although there are no THFC players in the England squad this year, the club will be represented via some of the other nations on the pitch, but one would think also that our Chairman, our DOF, and maybe even our manager might make the trip to Brazil to cast their eyes over the assembled talent. The hypothetical question is, should they bring their Cheque books with them? Is buying players based on their World Cup exploits inspired or complete folly?

There are many potential pitfalls to this approach, 1) Basing a player's suitability for a squad place on his performance during a three week tournament is risky. 2) International football is completely different to English Premier league football in style. 3) Most importantly, how would you know if a player who may have had a great tournament could actually maintain that form 'on a wet and windy Tuesday night at Stoke'. 4) Over hyped players may have their price tags inflated if they have a good tournament.

There are some advantages as well though and if lucky you may be able to find a 'gem'. THFC does have a history of recruiting players following World Cup appearances. The two most famous who spring to mind are Ossie Ardiles and Ricky Villa. Both of these players were signed by Spurs after the World Cup of 1978, and went on to be etched into the Folklore of the club. Other players signed include Nico Claesen, Ilie Dumitrescu, George Popescu, and more recently Dider Zokora and Roman Pavyluchenko who was actually signed after the Euros of 2008, but same principle.

Those players represent a mixed bag of success, but I will let you the readers decide as to whether they were worth their fees or not. Should Mr Baldini, bring his cheque book with him to Brazil, is it good idea to sign players in such or way or is it equivalent to doing your scouting via You tube or Match of the Day. Apparently, we need a new left back, will that player be at the World Cup this year? What would people think if we signed Costa Rica's first choice left back or Australia's centre forward based on a couple of good games at the World Cup.

Anyway, I hope you all enjoy the tournament and I look forward to your comments.

A great opportunity to rubber stamp the man you've been after.... However we are not in a position to sign someone 'cold' as it were .... Not in our current position.

If I recall correctly, Liverpool signed Phil Babb on the back of a decent showing at the 94 World Cup, never regaining that World Cup form he can maybe be used as a prime example as the negative.

As for will the LB be at the World Cup this year...Yep!...and he plays for Switzerland. Hope we have our Blankety Blank to hand.
Cider spurs
Does Levy take his cheque book anywhere with him?!! He is a window shopper, more likely busy working deals for the outs!
Critical_Spur
I would hope, considering what we pay him, that Baldini has already got a list of bright young players to discuss with Pochettino...if any are featuring in the world cup then that represents a further opportunity to watch them, I would be sceptical about signing a player who wasn't on the radar already purely due to his performance at the tournament though
Guernman
Also, does Easyjet fly to Rio?
Critical_Spur
Am sure that most on here watched the game yesterday. Did anyone see the stat that Paulinho played 18 minutes of the second half and whilst his team were dominating possession, he touched the ball zero times. Yes, that right, a midfielder touched the ball not once in eighteen minutes before being subbed. Not great.
Windlespur
Whilst some players may come to light during the tournament, I am of the belief that players surely must have been identified prior, and the World Cup should only be used as another opportunity to watch the player further. Flashes of brilliance over a few games may be considered great, but the fact still remains, it must still be considered an impulse buy, not the way to recruit IMO. Identify targets over a period of time, makes more sense to me.
Cider spurs
Guernman...Agree.

Windle...That's some stat. I wrote on the other thread that I feel he runs about a great deal, but does not really do much. The game yesterday passed him by. Certainly not a player to boss a game.
Cider spurs
Oscar was more involved than our Polly. Apart from the run on the goal and the shot, don't think he did much, but came close to a booking......as did many Brazilian players!
Critical_Spur
NTW, I am taking some Geography lessons (google) ref Costa Rica. Will keep you guys informed!!! COYCR!
Critical_Spur
I'm hoping they already know the players needed to improve the squad and are just there to observe them play. COYS!

A most unlike Brazilian display from a Brazilian team. None caught the eye. I thought the Brazilians players who deserve the 'who are ya?' Chant the most were Hulk and Fred. Was the Croatian goalie an ex Spur?
Highgatespur
Did we perhaps buy Paulinho on the strength of his Confederations cup appearances? One good tournament means nothing. It was however the first match of the tournament last night and players can and do often grow as it goes on. There is a chance though that Jose may be dropped after his poor show last night. Modric's brother looked good though. How much would he cost?
MAN ON!
Tbh, am quite interested to see how many ex Spurs there are in this WC... Hearing GDS playing instead of chicoritto (little pea) for Mexico (Cider, what's happened there ?) is KPB playing for Ghana?
Highgatespur
It's also possible to ignore a guys potential because they have a bad tournament. It's all over-hyped and exaggerated if a player does well and the same if they don't show up. There's been many great players that have failed to impress in one major tournament only to be a star in the next one..... We got lucky with Ossie and Ricky but remember, Burkinshaw could have well dropped Villa for the FA cup replay against City, after his poor performance in the first game. We all know what happened next...
MAN ON!
Hopefully Messi got all the extra motivation he needed last night to hit the ground running with Neymar getting two goals... Would be great if there was a goal fest amongst the strikers. Imagine being a Barca fan now!
Highgatespur
Critical - could you just imagine Ryan air flying there .... Mega dollars for spending a penny ?!!
Highgatespur
If your name is Harry, it's a player that you don't know and you watch them have a commanding performance and score a goal against France then you obviously rush in with your cheque book. Then 4 years later they will be at loan at Doncaster Rovers, you're now managing QPR and your former chairman is wondering why it's hard to break even each year when he's left with a dud.
muttley
LOVREN is a must... class performance last night... regardless of the goals.
Yidmarks
muttley, who are you talking about ? I think a lot of due diligence goes on these days perhaps more than we know/think... I remember looking at Pauli at Confed Cup because we had signed before the tournament and was pleased at his performances at the comp.... similarly (hopefully) now with the likes of Rodriguez, Alderweireld (not going drop him!) and Lovren - hoping it's a case of only signing on the dotted line...
Highgatespur
off the topic slightly - can't be feeling that good today if your FAB hero is adorning the colours of one of your nearest rivals after promising never to play for another London team... sweet!!
Highgatespur
As I posted on another thread - tournament scouting is not the way to go...this is not the 70's when you could see players you never saw before...there are scouts scouring the globe, analysing and assessing players talents all the time- if our scouts don't already know a great deal about all of the players on show at the WC then they are not doing their jobs properly...the trick is seeing which players are going to kick on and reach their potential or those that have peaked and are on the wain....
shedboy2
After the last world cup, we picked up Khumalo.... Let's do better this time....
TonyRich
I must also congratulate on FIFA coming up with the spray can line to keep a wall back 10 yards. Great idea. One great idea every 10 years or so... Blatter out!
TonyRich
I would have more impressed if they bought in something to eradicate the groping that goes on in the penalty box at every free kick / corner ... 'nope let's leave the bigger issues alone' attitude goes on.
Highgatespur
Highgatespur - yep, the grappling was noticeable last night. Admittedly I do not know what more you can do about that barring their experiment with an official behind the goal. I personally favour retrospective action of some sort. It is all on camera. And it can be reviewed later, and perpetrators can be punished later in a cumulative fashion - i.e. the more they offend, the bigger the punishment. A referee on the field can check for only so much: ball not taken from correct spot, ball out of play, fouls, handballs, offsides.
TonyRich
OFF TOPIC

Happy 69th Birthday to the best goalie I probably ever seen..
http://tottenhamhotspur.blogspot.co.uk/2014/06/happy-birthday-pat-jennings-video.html

Highgatespur
Yes of course Baldini should be there but more than likely to monitor the players he was previously tracking. It's a great show piece for players but to suggest they are only signed on these tournaments alone is farcical especially with Levy as our chairman. A good WC and the price doubles. We all know this. The usual suspects bashing our players I see, good on u guys for pointing out the negatives of Paulinho. The Brazil team were lost completely last night and were lucky to win that. Paulinho was asked to fetch and carry and push on into the box which he did effectively and got off a couple of shots. There was only one outstanding player in the match who was Oscar. The sad thing is Gustavo (amazing talent) should have been much deeper with Paulinho further up in MF for me, they had a almighty task trying to get round the full backs with zero down the middle. Talk about passengers what of 50 million pounds of nothing in Hulk!
Mix26
TonyRich - it's more simple for me - award penalties!!! Maybe plenty ones awarded at first but worth it ... to me it's just as bad as diving!! Just watch Pepe for Portugal.... he plays like as if it's basketball - except in b-ball he'd get punished!!!
Highgatespur
Mix26, for me Hulk seems to be lonely in your post so I will add Fred to that ... two of the worst displays I have seen I think... As for Spurs I'm sure the plaudits will come to force with Nabil's and Chadders' MoM performances... I do think Modders faded away badly in the second half...
Highgatespur
Be interesting to see how GDS performs for Mexico today.Always thought he was the one we should have kept.
Greavesaboveall
Hulk is overrated and Fred apart from falling and getting the penalty was shocking.
Kong
Highgatespur - but that was my problem. The ref and linesman must look for all the things I mentioned before and also look for grapping happening all over the penalty area. They will still miss some of the offences. Pulis' Stoke used to get away with murder because they had Robert Huth blatently offending on the goal line during Stoke corners because he learnt the precise times when the ref could not possibly be looking at him. The ref can only be looking in one place. I wish it could be as simple as how you say.
TonyRich
Sorry TonyRich missed saying that retrospective sending off should take place and points deducted on accumulated basis.. will stop commentators saying that ridiculous phrase "taking one for the team"!!! I do find it appalling and the Spurs defenders are so crap at that as well!!! (except for the occasional taking down of the shorts!!!)
Highgatespur
Greavesaboveall 100% agreement with you there - a talented player!
Highgatespur
GDS's talent was never in question, he has bags of it, the problem has always been his attitude. It is one thing to be up for a game like today on the worlds biggest stage, where I wouldn't be surprised if he excelled... quite another to be prepared to give 100% playing away to Stoke for example. In this respect I still believe that Paulinho will prove to be a good buy for us and despite his performance yesterday he could still have a decent tournament. He has shown enough during periods under AVB to be given time and support IMO, considering the changes endured to switch from Brazil to England I think it is only fair to start judging Paulinho from next season
Guernman
Guernman, true but he has proved to be a success in a sustained manner in La Liga and the world stage.Perhaps the talent should have been nurtured and more mentoring offered... I do lay the blame on the coaches of that time - we seem to have lost of talented ones in that period... KPB, DB, AT to mention a few.
Highgatespur

Maybe Dos Santos wasn't suited to the english game, not fair to say he was poorly managed when we really don't know what goes on behind the scenes...

Good post Shedboy2 totally agree
Ossie
dos santos is a good player
tarkan mardinCOYS
Highgate - I was talking about Bongani Khumalo. Apparently still a Spurs player after stints at Preston, Reading, PAOK and finally Doncaster. Right now, are very own Mr Levy is paying his wages as he sips his Pino Colada on some exotic beach. Obviously, we have made about £12.50 on merchandise from buying a South African after the WC and we probably has some sort of alliance with Supersport in Pretoria that gets us their best young talent. Ignore me, I'm just an old cyclic :-)
muttley
muttley - oh yea - meant to be the gateway to the SA market .. the flavour of the month... now it seems to be USA!!! It looks so embarrassing when piled altogether...
Highgatespur
Ossie, sorry but too many players have gone in a similar way to say "wasn't suited to the english game, not fair to say he was poorly managed when we really don't know what goes on behind the scenes..." - something must have been going on....
Highgatespur
Gio was unfortunate in that Ramso brought him in and then got sacked early on so a new manager coming in didn't help. Harry was not a fan of Gio and that didn't help his cause. Wasn't meant to be for him with us.
Kong
No need to be sorry, like I said we don't know what goes on, we all just guessing...It wasn't as if he excelled on loan in the EPL but not with us, but we all can see what a talent he is with Mexico and in Spanish football.
Ossie
I don't think having a WC necessarily means success in the PL. I would go cautiously, often people play better in big tournaments and don't replicate it at cub level vice versa. I would say we have a good enough squad for Poch to take a good look but we do need a couple of changes but may be the WC is not the place to do that.

As for last night game I thought Brazil were average and expected that with the first game, they will improve. Thought Hulk and Fred were never in the game but then I have never really rated them as much as others. As for our man Paulinho, average at best. I watched him of the ball, quite lazy at times, he stands around a lot, may be the heat has something to do with it but not so sure. I think he is Brazilian without the magic. Meaning he likes to play passing football, short passes, ball to feet but technically isn't fantastic. Whereas Sandro I don't see him as Brazilian as much. He likes to get stuck in and tackle, not Brazilian way, but doesn't have the technical ability of the Brazilian way. There fore I can see why Sandro is more suited to the PL than Paulinho has been and I wonder whether he will be this season. For me Paulinho didn't show me anything last night that convinced me he is nothing special and certainly nothing to prove to me he will become a class PL player. Yes he makes a few good runs, but in the PL there has to be a lot more movement, lot more getting stuck in and a lot more than he showed last night. Having said that it was his first game in extreme heat, so with the heat and nerves I will hold of judgement until I see more of him.

I didn't think Oscar was brilliant, better than Paulinho, but too restricted on the wing imo. However, he kept going got some good crosses in and actually looked better when he came in centrally and scored his goal.

Time will tell whether Brazil have enough in their locker to go all the way. I predicated they will through some luck and with the home advantage and be in the final with Germany, but Germany to win the final.

Brazil have a match winner in Neymar can score out of nothing even if he scuffs his shot, they were lucky last night with the decisions, but that is bound to happen in a tournament, there will be many dodgy decisions this is when we see who gets lucky.

I think Brazil have a decent defense and will be hard to beat, it will be a matter of whether they can score enough and get more out of the players like fred and Hulk and the midfield.

David Bentley retired - well it was a sad time for him at Spurs. Was the move a wrong move for him - may be. We don't know because we don't know the facts. May be he saw the bright lights of football when he came and decided it wasn't what he really wanted, if that was the case then may be it was the right move, or may be the move ruined his career, lost his confidence then it would be a wrong move. Only Bentley will be able to answer this question. His life change when he came to us, whether it was for the better or worse we don't know. People will say a waste, bad move but they don't know. There is more to life than football, may be he saw the light of it all and has grown beyond the dizziness of ego and money this game produces, we will see, or will we, unless Bentley talks and tells us how he thinks and feels it's all speculation.

Good luck bentley, I hope you have peace and happiness.
BigSpursFan
We gonna have an extremely thin squad next season based on supporters hypothetical assumptions of what constitutes actually playing for Spurs. God help any foreign player who has yet undergone the rituals and initiation whereby he swears to pay all homage to Spurs and then subsequently cuts his hand to sign the supporters agreement in blood! God help any player who even dares to drop his head, look defeated or dejected. We currently have 2-3 players deserving starts next season according to the rules of "supporting", I wonder how we will find another team to commit and play on the level worthy to wear the shirt. Sad sad times...
Mix26
Credit has to be given to croatia..they knew how brazil would play and asked them to come and break them down(we know how that feels)...what we saw was a Brazil lacking the flair (or plan b) to break teams down...they mitigated that by bringing on hernanes and Bernard but had the ref not had a stinker that could have been a draw....it appeared to me the croats were as technically able and just as fit as the brazilians which meant it was down to tactics and team play...until the ref stepped in to decide the winner...
shedboy2
Mix - too funny. You're exaggerating of course as there's only 2 - Lloris and Eriksen.
muttley

It will be worth keeping an eye on the Dutch defence tonight see how they hold out against Spain, may be 1 or 2 gems in the Dutch back line.

Thanks for the comments everyone. I wanted to write a quick WC article with a THFC twist, so this was it. Of course we shouldn't be buying players just off the back of a good international tournament, and I would hope and suspect that DL and Baldini arn't going to do that this time. It has happened in the past, and the risk for me is epitomised in Pav's signing after Euro 2008. He was great in that tournament, but never really lit it up for us, even though he did show flashes of brilliance at times. When we signed Ossie and Ricky after the '78 WC, it was maybe the first time that we got a really good look at them as players. Clubs probably didn't have extensive international scouting networks and many of the players on show weren't European based. Nowadays, many players from the big teams play their football in Europe and you would hope that the people that matter know where and who the talent is.

On the game last night, I was really unimpressed with Brazil, not a patch on the great Brazil teams of the past. No real flair at all. Hulk, Fred, crap,Neymar overrated, but nice hair. Gustavo and Paulihno didn't impose themselves at all. Alves and Marcelo can't defend, only Luis looks competent back there and for me Oscar was their only threat going forward. They'll probably go far!! If Croatia had had more pace, they would have won that game.

Nicely put Mix... we do put high expectations on ourselves at times... we are tending to think whether they'd be good enough for CL and same as in the search for the coach - we are not in CL next year !!! ice humour!! Not sad ironicI'd say... just 3 needed...
Highgatespur
Geof, GDS was never given the chance to shine at Spurs - longest stretch was 3 games at the start of a season... a long list of players - quality ones - failed to shine at Spurs around the same time. They needed coaching, nurturing and guidance none of which was aailable at the club - we still lack in that department. His 76 caps and 15 goals for Mexico just about says it all... great article of him in Barca Museum. Well done to him for sticking at it.... A lack of patience ? 100% agreement!

Good creative article Cleveland although I think the obvious answer is Levy won't be gamble on a One Viewing basis.

You could ask the opposite though, is the World Cup a great chance to get the player you've been after for ages if they have a bad World Cup? This I think is more realistic, and with the opposite view to your article you could equally ask does this mean they are more cut out for a longer season, the cold windy stoke nights out... Thinking about DL this looks like his dream, proper negotiating powers, proof the players are over valued as no one is coming knocking post tournament.

Personally I just hope we got after exactly who Pochettino wants and no one else, I can't believe all the players that came in were AVB's primary targets and that certainly helped his/our downfall. I'm flying to Portugal now to get away from the sofa COYE!!

Obviously you should not buy players based on International tournaments as you're just asking for trouble. Point of interest though, if we're looking for a new keeper as competition for LLoris then two good candidates are on show tonight. Cillessen of Holland and Matt Ryan of Australia are both young decent keepers. Will be interesting to see how they get on. Hope you're all enjoying the world cup as much as I am!!

Whln17, what was it like last night in Spain after that heavy defeat, was it took badly over there?
Kong
Robben was on fire last night, it could easily have finished more than 5 goals for Holland, pace always causes problems, if you also intelligent with the ball then it is hard for any team to contain, I am hoping Roy does use pace tonight but not that hopeful, can see him being more cautious.
Kong
Why did you mention WBA Dublin?
MAN ON!
If Holland can keep that kind of energy up, they could once again reach the final, though surely they will be knackered after last night. 5-1 up and they were still running, chasing Spain down and looking for more goals. Fantastic commitment. Why did they not do that 4 years ago?
MAN ON!
The ideal way to make signings is to do some proper scouting, and "due dilligence" on the intended player over an extended period at club level. One or two outstanding games in an international tournament do not give a proper indication of a players likely use over a full season, or indeed the duration of a contract. Many, including us in the past, have got their fingers burnt by signing players based on a few international performances.
Frank
Man on, that is the thing with holland, the talent is always there but they don't carry it through. Will be interesting to see how they carry on in the tournament and if with such intensity, when RVP scored his first goal I thought you would get out of breath celebrating. Great performance and a reality check for Spain.
Kong
Dublin, feeling quite happy with the Aussies this morning .... Good goal.... LOL about your prediction re Baggies !!!! Unlike you, I hear people in Smethwick are putting their houses on winning the league next year !!! So, has Ramsey left WHL? ROFL if DL wanting compensation for LF and CR!!! Cheeky git!
Highgatespur
Whln17, you do like your pacey players, I agree with go at it from the start and dictate the play and take the game to Italy, if they start cautious that will play into Italy's game plan of slow and steady.
Kong
Kong.. They played like it was the final. That's how you want your team to play every match. If LVG get's United playing like that, they'll be back with a bang. If Poch can get Spurs playing like that, we'll be a very happy bunch of supporters. Then again we don't have Robben and Robin.

MAN ON, "if Poch can get us playing like that", that reminds me of an old adage "if your auntie had bollox, she would be your uncle". If Poch could get us playing like that, with what we have, his next trick would be "water into wine" or parting the Red Sea. If pigs could fly, they would make unlikely birds. If Pochittino can keep us in the top 6, I will be amazed, and very pleasantly surprised.

Frank. Well, I feel the same unfortunately but his assistant coach is called Jesus, so you never know.

Tonight probably at home... I don't drink so I do tend to avoid the over drunk folks... but Trafalgar Sq ... afterwards!!!... Btw I'm in your world of 'Spurs to win treble and EL' LOL - take care...

I guess he wanted 18 months!....... Long term or nothing! Hope he finds a job and sees it as a LONG TERM learning curve. Good luck to him.

MAN ON!
Sherwood's massive ego, confused by some as self belief, will always hinder his development as a coach in the lower reaches of the PL, or more realistically in the championship. Until he gets his badges and gathers some experience somewhere, he should not assume that because Levy was daft enough to give him a contract, rather than just using him as a caretaker, he need not think that everybody will bend to his demands.
Frank

Highgatespur

123spurs
c'mon Costa!
MAN ON!
Re Tim and WBA wouldn't surprise me if he didn't talk himself out of the job, he has got a huge ego and now he has managed spurs he thinks he can make demands, he has proved nothing imo other than how to unsettle a group of international players. Most managers would have achieved what he did with the squad of players he had at his disposal, when he was tested, in the cups and against the top four he failed to impose, I would doubt he will make a good manager unless he starts at a lower league and learns his trade and drops the ego.

A good match now, will Saurez have to come on. These two teams are beatable imo this is a tight group. Costa Rica played sensible, they kept it tight first half and only conceded one goal, second half they are opening up.

Well I enjoyed the game. England had a go. Thought inexperience showed, they tired themselves out, may be need to calm it down a bit and play with their brains a bit more especially against a side that keep the ball well but it's a learning curve.

Weak down the left, Baines had no real help. Rooney is a problem, he is supposed to be best behind striker but Sterling was very good there and very mobile, should we sacrifice Sterling in that position to let Rooney play there? I just never rated Rooney as much as some and he has been woeful in big tournaments. I think if he starts next game and doesn't do enough in first half he should be dropped. Still think we can go through and it wouldn't surprise me if Italy lose a game, it could be a tight group. There were positives and we shouldn't be so down hearted
BigSpursFan

Cider, if you are still awake, can we have a post match report?!

MAN ON!, imo, our pacey players DID play with huff and puff, also imo, we were let down by our so called experienced players. If I were to give marks out of 10, ALL the experienced players, bar Johnson, would've got 5 max. The (hungrier) youngsters tried the hardest imo. Rooney, apart from the cross was average, as were Baines and Gerrard, Sterling covered more miles than any player. Anyway, hope lessons learnt and we get the job done in the next two matches.

Highgate, yes saw that, but more so, I was impressed by the look on Pirlo's face...i.e., there was none. The guy just walked away after hitting the bar, no gestures, drama, emotions. Just walked away with a look of indifference. I guess he's been there, done it, got the badge.....now just take it in his stride.

I thought we played well.... Better than Brazil did but, we lost and they won. That's football!
MAN ON!
I think England were refreshing last night but Rooney was the weak link and doesn't deserve to start imo. He has had his chances now lets see either Barkley or Lallana start. I forgive Baines, he is new to WC and he didn't have enough help from midfield. I don't rate Johnson but he had one of his better games. The weak player imo was Rooney and I thought Gerrard was quiet. I still think we can qualify and expect Italy to drop points. It's a tight group and I think any two of the four can qualify. I would stick with same team but swap Rooney for Lallana and use Barklay as a sub, may be Milner if we get tired legs and may be Rooney as a sub if needed, may be being on the bench may give him a kick up the assss.
BigSpursFan
Back to Tottenham - I am excited for this coming season.

BigSpursFan.. I agree. I think Rooney is once again not full recovered from injury, tired and also overawed by the competition. He may do well as a sub. The young lads did very well and Roy should be commended for blooding them.

Ricardo Rodriguez should be lining up for Switzerland at LB today. Interesting to see if he can deliver on the national stage, mighty fine player for his club Wolfsburg. I will be casting a beady eye over this one.

Thought England played well in parts, time to omit Rooney or play him in the middle for the next game IMO, on a final note...don't forget the tournament favourites Iran play tomorrow, after numerous heavy bets, the bookies have suspended the betting. I'm having a Persian party tomorrow, hubbly bubbly, plenty of hot tea and of course my old favorite Chelo Kabab. Iran...the home of football. Got a ring to it, yeah I'm feeling good about this, think it was a good idea using my house deeds as a form of stake to bet on Iran winning the World Cup.

England played well against a very good Italian side. Italy are masters of defending and at times we got the better of them. Pirlo was just majestic and Sterling was fantastic. When I return I expect to see an article on the ups and downs and ins and outs of WBA. Let's be topical.....
MAN ON!
MAN ON - I don't agree re Rooney not being fully recovered, I actually predicted when he came onto the scene all those years ago that he wouldn't NOT become a legend in a BIG tournament. My son disagreed with me at the time (he was only young) unfortunately for England I am being proved right. Even back then I just got this gut feeling and I said he will be over rated and I think he is. Yes he is a good player, but inconsistent even at Utd and while he has bagged a few goals for England he has not shone at any big tournament imo. Injury has nothing to do with it imo. Now the problem he has this time at the WC is that we have up and coming youngsters who play without fear and who are capable of doing a good job, hence Sterling last night and Rooney is not imo first choice, or shouldn't be, he has genuine competition and he hasn't been able to deal with that either. Too much being seen as no 1 at Utd and too much money and psychological rubbish going of in his head. I mean he admitted himself in previous WC he didn't enjoy them. Well sorry if you are in a WC for your national team surely the least you can do is enjoy it. Nope for me injury or no injury he is another Barnes, will do ok against weaker opposition in a England shirt, but when it comes to the big stage against top opposition he isn't up for it.

I hope I am proved wrong for England's sake but in all honesty I would drop him and play Lallana instead. If it was another player playing in their third WC and put in a display like last night they would be dropped, he has had his chances, rather see someone else given a chance. May be he can come on for Sterling at 70mins whe the lad has run himself into the ground, something Rooney ought to be doing.

Rooney is never worth 300k a week and imo is so so over rated. His agent has played a blinder, got him better deals when the club have been in a fragile boarder line crisis, so that they couldn't afford to let him go. The last couple of years under fergie the Utd squad were fragile, you could see it was coming to the end of a era and Rooney was important because they didn't have the depth in the squad so his agent managed to use that, but had the squad been strong I doubt he would have got such good deals, they would have let him go.
BigSpursFan
BSF - his interview said it all really - the interviewer didn't have cahonas to ask him about his own form...
Highgatespur
I'd love the flexibility deployed as our squad seem to be capable of - hopefully MRP can see it as well...
Highgatespur
I just thought Rooney could have played better, that's all. I'd prefer now to see Lallana on the left, Sterling on the right and Rooney central behind Sturridge, if played. If not, then Welbeck. Danny was criticised on here last night but I thought he played well.
MAN ON!
tottingham10. I think that's probably the first time LVG has used a 3-5-2 formation and it worked a treat.
MAN ON!
WHLN17london-don't know what your getting at. The conversation I had with my son re Rooney was when my son was a teenager, not before he was born. Secondly, there was no competition, it was a discussion and I often see a player and see things in a player that makes me give an opinion whether they will go on to become a good player or world class player, my son just happened to disagree with me. End of conversation. Really not sure what your post is about, is it a 'dig' is it a bit of 'fun' who knows, each to their own.
BigSpursFan
Don't think Rodriguez has touched the ball yet !!
Highgatespur
Highgate-I noticed he wasn't asked about his form in the interview. I am not one for kicking people when they are down but I do like to give my opinion with no malice behind them. I don't think Rooney deserves a place and needs to step up 'if he can' to earn his starting place. We have some hungry young players this WC and they are playing without fear and deserve a chance, get the experience for the future, Rooney has been at two WC and had his chances. Like I said I have never rated him as much as others have but we all have different opinions about players so I accept if others think he is top class. I do just think some players don't do it when it comes to big tournaments but can be very good for their clubs, may be Rooney is just one of them. I remember Barnes, he just didn't do it at international level, yet for his club he was great at times. Still England shouldn't carry a player if there are other options, and I believe this time round there are other options and Rooney should be dropped and imo in favour of Lallana on the left. Don't see why Sterling should be take from that central position after last night's performance.
BigSpursFan
BSF - I'm with totally - well almost ... I don't think Rooney does it at club either too often. No near to justify that 300k / week - I think he's at the same level as quite a few high performing players. I remember him saying after 2008 CL final that he'd like to emulate Messi in the future - well 6 years on I think the difference between the two has got bigger more than anything else. IMO he has been living on reputation for a long while. I think Barkley's reaction to his interception said a lot and hopefully signals a changing of the guard I hope. He certainly should've been influential in a lot more high profile/impact games that he has been. The level which HE claims to be in.

Just heard the first mention of Rodrigues with a good cross!

I reckon WR always flatters to deceive.... agree with Scholes - reckon he hit the summit when he was 22-24!!!
Highgatespur
Compared to the last England-Italy game when England were chasing shadows, a decent performance by England. I think Italy pretty much controlled the game, allowing England possession when in front and the more offensive team at 0-0 and 1-1. From an England's fan perspective it must be disappointing that Hodgson was unable to counter Italy's threat from the right, having lost De Sciglio and having to play a centre back at left back, Italy posed no threat on the left so you would think they would be able to concentrate their efforts on the right. Stelling England's best and Rooney should be dropped.
ItalianYiddo
Alex Fergusson didn't have a clue did he? I've heard that he only ever played Rooney because he felt sorry for him.. 19 goals in 40 last season was due to the Moyes effect. In the 2011-12, title winning season, Rooney could only manage 34 goals in 43 matches. Lucky or what? Overrated for sure. LOL! Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm. I am a sarcastic bar steward aren't I.
MAN ON!
Capello should have dropped Rooney in South Africa too, but you can understand managers giving star players more slack hoping that they turn it on.
ItalianYiddo
And what was it with the England players and cramp? Are these not super fit athletes at the top of their game?
ItalianYiddo
Rooney should never have gone to S Africa.

MAN ON!
Actually he wasn't as bad as I think. He just couldn't manage to score.
MAN ON!
IY, I don't know about that - there are many examples of 'star' players being dropped in the past and at present... like the French with Ginola and Cantona for the 98 Cup and Nasri this year. The managers are being paid so much they ought to be able to make those decision rather be scared.

Highgate, it takes some balls to drop star names, if the team has a poor tournament and you have left your star player at home you won't recover from it. Re. the cramps, apparently it wasn't particulary hot last night and to suffer in the 90 minutes is a bit odd.
ItalianYiddo

WHLN17london-I guess I only mentioned it because it wouldn't occur to me that others may not believe me, when I said I predicted it. Any way it's not that important, non of what I say is that important, in the vast scheme of things because I am not involved in the England set up neither am i involved in any footballing matters other than having a few conversations on here, to share my thoughts and opinions, but as I said it's not that important.

I am sure Rooney is disappointed and like I said some players just don't emulate there club performances, I wish he would because when he does play well he is unstoppable, may be the problem with some players is that they get 'world class' status too soon. I remember many months, even a couple of years ago on this site there was a conversation re a player or manager being a legend at Tottenham and my thoughts were different to most. I felt players get this 'legend' status too easy, and so do some managers. I am old school and feel players need to earn it. Same with the world class status players are often given. Too much too soon, no wonder players like Rooney struggle to live up to such silly images. I am not anti Rooney, I am not anti any player, in fact any 'human being' but to discuss footballing matters on such a forum one has to have an opinion, and I gave me mine and just backed up my own thoughts with what I 'did' predict many years ago. I also predicted on this site Ramos wouldn't last, but can I prove it. I do have a tendency to predict, but non of it is important really, even if I predict right, it is not my intention to 'prove' anything just 'discussing'.

As for Rooney, I stand by my opinions that he needs to be dropped, that he has had enough chances, but if he isn't then fair enough, that is Hodgson's choice and I hope he finds his form, not only for England but for himself. I wouldn't want the pressures and status of a footballer these days. We live in a mad world and football reflects that madness.

MAN ON - Rooney did have some good seasons, I am not saying he hasn't I am just saying he has been lucky at times, some players can score goals without playing well, some players can play well and not score goals. Still I am not going into another dialogue re Rooney and Utd, respect your opinions and I laugh off your sarcastic manner lol.

Final note, I think we all have different opinions as to what 'world class' status is so many of us will disagree over players, I am happy to agree to disagree and say imo Rooney is NOT world class.

And the big booty!

Thought so Dublin - up the garden path but the front door firmly shut!!! aye ??!! Some carry that big booty to their advantage and some don't !!! Too early to make that call on Stirling...

What a goal - fancy Rodrigues doing that for Spurs next year ? Rose ? LOL
Highgatespur
Well 2 goals for Switzerland, two assists for Rodriguez. could have been 3, but a perfectly good goal chalked off for offside. Rodriguez does deliver good ball, tackles well, but again today IMO his lack of pace slightly concerns me. He is often still up the pitch same as Rose, and does not bust a gut to get back, but he does offer far more than Rose in the final 3rd and I'd suggest his forward runs are more considered.
Cider spurs
BSF - agree with you especially with the tags of 'world class' and 'legend'... far too easy. I'd've thought WR would've played out of his skin to prove his old TEAM-MATE wrong yesterday but he knows best... Came across this - interesting - nearly mirrors the thoughts of the ones expressed on this forum..

Highgatespur
BigSpursFan.. Sorry, I was just having some fun. I do half agree with you anyway.
MAN ON!
cider - hello- impressive ... concentrated on the defending duties in the earlier parts of the games... wouldn't mind the mistakes at the back as long as there was some products out of those attacking forays ... which Rodriguez did today... Anyway ...
Highgatespur
Hello Highgate...I suppose one should not complain, a LB who could have provided 3 assists in a single game is not too shabby. Like I say, he is quite a muscular built type, built more for strength as opposed to speed, at present that would be my only slight concern.
Cider spurs
Afer today's display no concern at all - it's a definitely an upgrade of several folds on the present state ...
Highgatespur
rooney is not world class he never was all english hype yet again
123spurs
Just to add, McManaman was another player that never performed well out of Liverpool.
Critical_Spur
Good luck Hugo, my player of the year, without him we would have finished below United.
ItalianYiddo
If we're looking for an attacking left mid - Antoine Griezmann is one to watch.
rahn DMC
WHLN, fair point re 'huff and puff' v 'flair and pace'. Vocabulary remains my Achilles heel! However, I am not convinced about the flair bit from the last night match. IMO, our preparation was not right for the climate, nor the oppo. The climate issues out there require intelligent play. Pace will work fine if you can grab a couple of goals earlier on and slow down the game, thus knackering the opponents. Like you also observed, the master (Pirlo) was pulling the strings. Why was Gerrard not doing the same? Also, imo, the trio of Welbeck, Rooney + Sturridge reduces our creativity in the midfield and I'd have started Lallana ahead of one of them (Welbeck).

Like someone else mentioned, Italy didn't suffer from cramps. Now we face two other teams in the group that are both from S. America, who'd have no issue with the climate. Getting out of the group is going to be 'less easy' (better than difficult!).
Critical_Spur
Dublin...I forgot to say, I did in fact get an e-mail from OX the other day, he did in fact pick #14, however, he sent me the e-mail at 7.30 a.m...did not arrive my end until 11.49 a.m, and was not even picked up by myself to later that evening...Whoops!.

Anyway, because Ox has missed out and asked whether I allocated him a number, and considering he was actually the first person to ask, I thought it only right to allocate my number 10...Iran is now Ox's selection. I have too much going on at present, so unlikely that I would get to watch the lesser games. A bracket I feel we can put Iran in, so from now on, feel free everybody to direct your Iran banter at Ox as opposed to myself.

ItalianYiddo
So a solution for our leftside problems: left back Ricardo Rodrigues, left midfield/winger Antoine Griezmann. Levy, expect you to complete these two deals asap!
Jables
Critical-some fair points. A bit naive in our approach, went at them time after time and without the goals we were then left shattered. In climates like Brazil you need intelligent play as you say. You can go for it but with intelligence, short bursts.

Italy were intelligent, they didn't need to do too much, our players wore themselves out without punishing them enough. Still inexperienced players but Roy ought to have known these things. I agree with the lack of creativity in the middle, I guess the emphasis was on the forwards to try and score but I think this is the fault of having this attacking force without midfield creativity, someone who can create something from deep rather than three or four forwards bombing forward. Gerrard was quiet and ought to be doing a Pirlo in the role he has, but I would prefer we played a 4 1 2 3 with Gerrard as deep DM (1) then I would play a semi DM with a creative midfielder (2) and three attackers. So may be Lallana with Henderson and then Sturridge, Sterling and Welbeck (Rooney). Playing Lallana with Henderson would gave us a bit of creativity in midfield and Henderson could help Gerrard and Lallana help the three attackers.
BigSpursFan
BigSpursFan, Gerrard has being playing that role for Pool this season very well but last night he was up against the relative heat and a very good technical Italian midfield. I can see England beating Uruguay and they will be back in the fold.
ItalianYiddo
ItalianYiddo-interesting article but I do agree with some of the points. I think the PL plays different football. I have been watching RM this season and I have seem how poor Bale is compared to his team mates at playing possession football, his skill level at keeping the ball and movement is lacking, although he had a good season. He has an exceptional skill at shooting and scoring and he has pace but close control and possession football is not so good. The way RM, Barcelona and AM, BM play is possession football and the best international teams play the same way but England international team don't, it's the mentality that comes from PL. Fast and bombing up and down. There are managers trying to bring change, AVB did but he didn't get the time or the balance and to transform the players mentality along with loads of new players caused predicaments. Rodgers, Martinez are both heading towards possession football combined with fast attacking, Poch is in the same category, with Southampton. Football I think changed to a more technical game, then it changed to more tactical, and now it is has changed to a more intelligent game and England are always lagging behind because of our mentality, we want the fast physical game in the PL and so our footballers don't always have the footballing brain that other continents have.
BigSpursFan
WHLN17london-Sterling to me played more of a attacking player not a midfielder, gerrard and henderson were our midfielder's. I mean a creative midfielder playing deeper.

Gerrard has been good for Liverpool and I like him, I also think we will still qualify beating C Rica and possibly getting a draw or win against Uruguay. I also think Italy will drop points at some point.
BigSpursFan
WHLN17london-sorry you can't have my underpants, I wear knickers, I am a female.
BigSpursFan
BigSpursFan, I have being watching old First Division and PL football at WHL since 1972, no doubt PL football is exciting and end to end, you lose the ball and then you get it back and so on. At international level you lose the ball and the opposition don't give it back hence super fit PL players end up with cramps in normal time. I do agree on having to be more intelligent with tactics and approach.
ItalianYiddo
BigSpursFan... your short post...Lol.. classic ..:-)
Block D Spurs
ItalianYiddo- well lets hope there is more intelligence in the next game. Football has changed and like you I have been watching many years, supported spurs nearly forty five years and as much as I love the game I also feel sad that it has become huge business. Madness.
BigSpursFan
WHLN17london- No thanks.
BigSpursFan
Well done France, lucky not to come away with some injuries. Want Lloris to have a good tournament.
BigSpursFan
very impressed with france
123spurs
BigSpursFan, I agree that the game is all about money now, look a the CL format, you end up 4th and you are deemed to be a champion? Brian Clough would never have being able to achieve what he did with Derby and Forest in today's money driven football world and that takes away the romance from the game.
ItalianYiddo
ItalianYiddo-I agree. It's such a shame. Often I feel like packing up supporting and watching football as it no longer sits well with me, my idea about life, but I just love the game. I used to love standing on the terraces. I remember being at Sheffield when Spurs played Ossie and Villa and the whole stadium was full of blue confetti, while it was a day to remember it was also a real significant change in the game.

Just back from Leicester Square - great atmosphere amongst the football fans - the Central Americans dominated tonight... good call rahn DMC - Griezmann - thought he was a centre forward...

I was gonna say something but I've forgotten what it was...... Probably not important.

IY - that Neil ashton is the epitome of hypocrisy and also seems to haver deep hatred of Spurs -or was it just towards AVB ?

IY BSF totally in agreement with your sentiments re the way football's gone like Norwich got more money being relegated this year than manure did when they won the league in 2013!!! Will the confetti return for the first game of the season at WHL next year ?

Good game so far. End-2-end stuff. Not sure Messi will have a field day against this lot.

They must have looked at vital WBA highgate!!! lol! we offered our help! IMO, a European ten will win this this year, and I might have a few quid on Holland or and France! Belgium already down 2 years ago at 40/1! all each way bets, but not impressed with S Americans so far…I think European Football clubs have stalled their flair and ruined their natural game, which I loved watching so much for many years! even the kids when they covered there skills on the streets was so exciting, that all seems to have been robbed. Highgate made a good point that more than half the Brazil squad played in England, and most of the rest in Europe…maybe the brazilian clubs would offer more!! I don't know, but they just don't seem to have the spunk any more for the tricks and flair!
Dublin Hotspur
Critical - thanks for that - remember the ticker tape welcome Ossie n Ricky got in 1978 ? Overwhelming!!!

Careful Dublin, my S. American Costa Rica sit atop the group!

Dublin - reckon the European will trail away and hoping for Brazil v Argies final... The only reason they are over here is the dosh!!! Btw remember it's not the way they start but finish... this game is sort of getting boring now - damn that early goal!!! Good bit on Bosnia before the game on BBC.

Critical - reckon they're missing Lamela ?

Yes, remember it vividly Highgate. A world cup idea brought to the Lane to Welcome our new recruits. Probably get locked up for littering now! ...and for assault if you threw the toilet roll!
