Bringing the Cheque book to the World Cup

Bringing the Cheque book to the World Cup

The World Cup of 2014 is now upon us. This veritable feast of football will take place in Brazil, the spiritual home of the beautiful game when once again 32 teams from all over the globe will compete for the biggest prize of all. Millions of people around the world will be watching from their sofas, their favourite bars or even from their work break room in anticipation as to who will lift the famous trophy aloft come the 13th July.

Although there are no THFC players in the England squad this year, the club will be represented via some of the other nations on the pitch, but one would think also that our Chairman, our DOF, and maybe even our manager might make the trip to Brazil to cast their eyes over the assembled talent. The hypothetical question is, should they bring their Cheque books with them? Is buying players based on their World Cup exploits inspired or complete folly?

There are many potential pitfalls to this approach, 1) Basing a player's suitability for a squad place on his performance during a three week tournament is risky. 2) International football is completely different to English Premier league football in style. 3) Most importantly, how would you know if a player who may have had a great tournament could actually maintain that form 'on a wet and windy Tuesday night at Stoke'. 4) Over hyped players may have their price tags inflated if they have a good tournament.

There are some advantages as well though and if lucky you may be able to find a 'gem'. THFC does have a history of recruiting players following World Cup appearances. The two most famous who spring to mind are Ossie Ardiles and Ricky Villa. Both of these players were signed by Spurs after the World Cup of 1978, and went on to be etched into the Folklore of the club. Other players signed include Nico Claesen, Ilie Dumitrescu, George Popescu, and more recently Dider Zokora and Roman Pavyluchenko who was actually signed after the Euros of 2008, but same principle.

Those players represent a mixed bag of success, but I will let you the readers decide as to whether they were worth their fees or not. Should Mr Baldini, bring his cheque book with him to Brazil, is it good idea to sign players in such or way or is it equivalent to doing your scouting via You tube or Match of the Day. Apparently, we need a new left back, will that player be at the World Cup this year? What would people think if we signed Costa Rica's first choice left back or Australia's centre forward based on a couple of good games at the World Cup.

Anyway, I hope you all enjoy the tournament and I look forward to your comments.

A great opportunity to rubber stamp the man you've been after.... However we are not in a position to sign someone 'cold' as it were .... Not in our current position.

If I recall correctly, Liverpool signed Phil Babb on the back of a decent showing at the 94 World Cup, never regaining that World Cup form he can maybe be used as a prime example as the negative.

As for will the LB be at the World Cup this year...Yep!...and he plays for Switzerland. Hope we have our Blankety Blank to hand.

I would hope, considering what we pay him, that Baldini has already got a list of bright young players to discuss with Pochettino...if any are featuring in the world cup then that represents a further opportunity to watch them, I would be sceptical about signing a player who wasn't on the radar already purely due to his performance at the tournament though

Am sure that most on here watched the game yesterday. Did anyone see the stat that Paulinho played 18 minutes of the second half and whilst his team were dominating possession, he touched the ball zero times. Yes, that right, a midfielder touched the ball not once in eighteen minutes before being subbed. Not great.

Whilst some players may come to light during the tournament, I am of the belief that players surely must have been identified prior, and the World Cup should only be used as another opportunity to watch the player further. Flashes of brilliance over a few games may be considered great, but the fact still remains, it must still be considered an impulse buy, not the way to recruit IMO. Identify targets over a period of time, makes more sense to me.

Windle...That's some stat. I wrote on the other thread that I feel he runs about a great deal, but does not really do much. The game yesterday passed him by. Certainly not a player to boss a game.

A most unlike Brazilian display from a Brazilian team. None caught the eye. I thought the Brazilians players who deserve the 'who are ya?' Chant the most were Hulk and Fred. Was the Croatian goalie an ex Spur?

Did we perhaps buy Paulinho on the strength of his Confederations cup appearances? One good tournament means nothing. It was however the first match of the tournament last night and players can and do often grow as it goes on. There is a chance though that Jose may be dropped after his poor show last night. Modric's brother looked good though. How much would he cost?

It's also possible to ignore a guys potential because they have a bad tournament. It's all over-hyped and exaggerated if a player does well and the same if they don't show up. There's been many great players that have failed to impress in one major tournament only to be a star in the next one..... We got lucky with Ossie and Ricky but remember, Burkinshaw could have well dropped Villa for the FA cup replay against City, after his poor performance in the first game. We all know what happened next...

If your name is Harry, it's a player that you don't know and you watch them have a commanding performance and score a goal against France then you obviously rush in with your cheque book. Then 4 years later they will be at loan at Doncaster Rovers, you're now managing QPR and your former chairman is wondering why it's hard to break even each year when he's left with a dud.

As I posted on another thread - tournament scouting is not the way to go...this is not the 70's when you could see players you never saw before...there are scouts scouring the globe, analysing and assessing players talents all the time- if our scouts don't already know a great deal about all of the players on show at the WC then they are not doing their jobs properly...the trick is seeing which players are going to kick on and reach their potential or those that have peaked and are on the wain....

Highgatespur - yep, the grappling was noticeable last night. Admittedly I do not know what more you can do about that barring their experiment with an official behind the goal. I personally favour retrospective action of some sort. It is all on camera. And it can be reviewed later, and perpetrators can be punished later in a cumulative fashion - i.e. the more they offend, the bigger the punishment. A referee on the field can check for only so much: ball not taken from correct spot, ball out of play, fouls, handballs, offsides.

Yes of course Baldini should be there but more than likely to monitor the players he was previously tracking. It's a great show piece for players but to suggest they are only signed on these tournaments alone is farcical especially with Levy as our chairman. A good WC and the price doubles. We all know this. The usual suspects bashing our players I see, good on u guys for pointing out the negatives of Paulinho. The Brazil team were lost completely last night and were lucky to win that. Paulinho was asked to fetch and carry and push on into the box which he did effectively and got off a couple of shots. There was only one outstanding player in the match who was Oscar. The sad thing is Gustavo (amazing talent) should have been much deeper with Paulinho further up in MF for me, they had a almighty task trying to get round the full backs with zero down the middle. Talk about passengers what of 50 million pounds of nothing in Hulk!

Mix26, for me Hulk seems to be lonely in your post so I will add Fred to that ... two of the worst displays I have seen I think... As for Spurs I'm sure the plaudits will come to force with Nabil's and Chadders' MoM performances... I do think Modders faded away badly in the second half...

Highgatespur - but that was my problem. The ref and linesman must look for all the things I mentioned before and also look for grapping happening all over the penalty area. They will still miss some of the offences. Pulis' Stoke used to get away with murder because they had Robert Huth blatently offending on the goal line during Stoke corners because he learnt the precise times when the ref could not possibly be looking at him. The ref can only be looking in one place. I wish it could be as simple as how you say.

GDS's talent was never in question, he has bags of it, the problem has always been his attitude. It is one thing to be up for a game like today on the worlds biggest stage, where I wouldn't be surprised if he excelled... quite another to be prepared to give 100% playing away to Stoke for example. In this respect I still believe that Paulinho will prove to be a good buy for us and despite his performance yesterday he could still have a decent tournament. He has shown enough during periods under AVB to be given time and support IMO, considering the changes endured to switch from Brazil to England I think it is only fair to start judging Paulinho from next season

Highgate - I was talking about Bongani Khumalo. Apparently still a Spurs player after stints at Preston, Reading, PAOK and finally Doncaster. Right now, are very own Mr Levy is paying his wages as he sips his Pino Colada on some exotic beach. Obviously, we have made about £12.50 on merchandise from buying a South African after the WC and we probably has some sort of alliance with Supersport in Pretoria that gets us their best young talent. I don't think having a WC necessarily means success in the PL. I would go cautiously, often people play better in big tournaments and don't replicate it at cub level vice versa. I would say we have a good enough squad for Poch to take a good look but we do need a couple of changes but may be the WC is not the place to do that.

As for last night game I thought Brazil were average and expected that with the first game, they will improve. Thought Hulk and Fred were never in the game but then I have never really rated them as much as others. As for our man Paulinho, average at best. I watched him of the ball, quite lazy at times, he stands around a lot, may be the heat has something to do with it but not so sure. I think he is Brazilian without the magic. Meaning he likes to play passing football, short passes, ball to feet but technically isn't fantastic. Whereas Sandro I don't see him as Brazilian as much. He likes to get stuck in and tackle, not Brazilian way, but doesn't have the technical ability of the Brazilian way. There fore I can see why Sandro is more suited to the PL than Paulinho has been and I wonder whether he will be this season. For me Paulinho didn't show me anything last night that convinced me he is nothing special and certainly nothing to prove to me he will become a class PL player. Yes he makes a few good runs, but in the PL there has to be a lot more movement, lot more getting stuck in and a lot more than he showed last night. Having said that it was his first game in extreme heat, so with the heat and nerves I will hold of judgement until I see more of him.

I didn't think Oscar was brilliant, better than Paulinho, but too restricted on the wing imo. However, he kept going got some good crosses in and actually looked better when he came in centrally and scored his goal.

Time will tell whether Brazil have enough in their locker to go all the way. I predicated they will through some luck and with the home advantage and be in the final with Germany, but Germany to win the final.

Brazil have a match winner in Neymar can score out of nothing even if he scuffs his shot, they were lucky last night with the decisions, but that is bound to happen in a tournament, there will be many dodgy decisions this is when we see who gets lucky.

I think Brazil have a decent defense and will be hard to beat, it will be a matter of whether they can score enough and get more out of the players like fred and Hulk and the midfield.

David Bentley retired - well it was a sad time for him at Spurs. Was the move a wrong move for him - may be. We don't know because we don't know the facts. May be he saw the bright lights of football when he came and decided it wasn't what he really wanted, if that was the case then may be it was the right move, or may be the move ruined his career, lost his confidence then it would be a wrong move. Only Bentley will be able to answer this question. His life change when he came to us, whether it was for the better or worse we don't know. People will say a waste, bad move but they don't know. There is more to life than football, may be he saw the light of it all and has grown beyond the dizziness of ego and money this game produces, we will see, or will we, unless Bentley talks and tells us how he thinks and feels it's all speculation.

Good luck bentley, I hope you have peace and happiness.

We gonna have an extremely thin squad next season based on supporters hypothetical assumptions of what constitutes actually playing for Spurs. God help any foreign player who has yet undergone the rituals and initiation whereby he swears to pay all homage to Spurs and then subsequently cuts his hand to sign the supporters agreement in blood! God help any player who even dares to drop his head, look defeated or dejected. We currently have 2-3 players deserving starts next season according to the rules of "supporting", I wonder how we will find another team to commit and play on the level worthy to wear the shirt. Sad sad times...

Credit has to be given to croatia..they knew how brazil would play and asked them to come and break them down(we know how that feels)...what we saw was a Brazil lacking the flair (or plan b) to break teams down...they mitigated that by bringing on hernanes and Bernard but had the ref not had a stinker that could have been a draw....it appeared to me the croats were as technically able and just as fit as the brazilians which meant it was down to tactics and team play...until the ref stepped in to decide the winner...

Thanks for the comments everyone. I wanted to write a quick WC article with a THFC twist, so this was it. Of course we shouldn't be buying players just off the back of a good international tournament, and I would hope and suspect that DL and Baldini arn't going to do that this time. It has happened in the past, and the risk for me is epitomised in Pav's signing after Euro 2008. He was great in that tournament, but never really lit it up for us, even though he did show flashes of brilliance at times. When we signed Ossie and Ricky after the '78 WC, it was maybe the first time that we got a really good look at them as players. Clubs probably didn't have extensive international scouting networks and many of the players on show weren't European based. Nowadays, many players from the big teams play their football in Europe and you would hope that the people that matter know where and who the talent is.

On the game last night, I was really unimpressed with Brazil, not a patch on the great Brazil teams of the past. No real flair at all. Hulk, Fred, crap,Neymar overrated, but nice hair. Gustavo and Paulihno didn't impose themselves at all. Alves and Marcelo can't defend, only Luis looks competent back there and for me Oscar was their only threat going forward. They'll probably go far!! If Croatia had had more pace, they would have won that game.
