Spurs in Brazil: The report!

Well, seeming all the teams in the World Cup have played at least one game, I thought now would be a good time to reflect on how our Spurs lads have fared thus far.

With most on display in the Belgium vs Algeria fixture, seems the obvious place to start. Belgium line up in a 4-2-3-1 formation. LB saw Vertonghen, Dembele paired in the middle with Witsel and Chadli was afforded the hole in behind Lukaku. Algeria went 4-1-4-1, with our 19 year old Bentaleb lining up for Algeria.

Belgium...Dark Horses was the cry, a thought that a few had directed at Spurs prior to last seasons start after much spending. It seemed rather apt, for I saw many similarities to the way Belgium played in this match to as to what I witnessed last season from Spurs. However dark horse it was not, I'd suggest more an albino Shetland Pony. The similarities come from the slow, un-penetrative often clueless brand of attack. Add to this the defensive lapse, and speculative shots from range, people...am I jogging your memories?.

Dembele...Again once more gliding past players, then a release to a team mate or a scuffed half shot. However, what does usually happen after Dembele's surge forward and pass, is his continual belief that he should stop as soon as the pass is made. Why?, if he can glide past so easily with the ball, it should be a stroll in the park to continue the run without it. Please can you look to start playing some good one, twos with players?, you have all the skills required, but a lack of belief, far too often I witness this at Spurs, reaffirming my view in this game.

If we look at Bentaleb, he is different, he gives the pass, and many times, the first thing on his mind is to drive forward to receive it straight back, or at least stay on the move to present an option albeit from pretty much whence it came. On the point of Nabil...Loved that first time ball out to the wing for the cross that led to the penalty, and what about the forearm smash on Dembele...payback for a flailing arm by Moose. One looked accidental, the other...Have that!. Ah! yes, that brings me nicely on to the penalty.

Did anybody else notice prior to the penalty, a little time before there was a cross that went into the box from the Left, seemed in the area for an age, Vertonghen was nowhere to be seen. I know the TV cameras can make player positions seem worse than they actually are, but I sat thinking to myself, Vert's will be here to help with this, nope, nope, nope. In fact he never arrived, even the commentator mentioning that was almost trouble, but Vert's had left it for others to attend. At least he tried to get back for the penalty, but let's be honest, pretty shocking positioning from a ball that has travelled down the opposite flank prior?.

Chadli, not alot to say really, couple of bursts with no end result, same as Dembele. I do appreciate it was hard, Algeria defended deep, sat deep and basically said, break us down, heck even Lukaku had to be subbed, no service equals ineffective. Now who was involved with this argument before?...our #9?...Bet Lukaku will be forgiven though. After all, it was not his fault, was it...?

All in all, I thought Algeria played the best way they possibly could, and nearly got the rewards. Harsh result on them in the end, but to be honest, Belgium did not cover themselves in glory, partly because Algeria stuck to a good game plan in most part, and partly of their own making. A final thought on this match, my last similarity between Belgium and Spurs in this fixture...Belgium went a goal down, but fought hard to win. Go Spurs!.

Come on keep up!...Brazil vs Mexico... Well Paulinho kept his place, surprising really, I thought he was poor in the opener, this was just as bad. Here's the thing, most of the Brazil side have looked poor, so it may seem harsh picking out Paulinho, but I am only looking at his performance as he plays for Spurs, I do however understand he is not the only player guilty in this current Brazil team.

What is it with him?...He has a habit, bugging me the more I see it unfold before my eyes. He very often seems to run in the proximity of a player, but seldom to make the tackle, he's never close enough. He shifts left, but the opponent speeds up, and doesn't actually beat Paulinho, because now Paulinho is jogging close, but behind and leaving it for another, even in attack, he seldom busts a gut with these late runs into the box. I watched time and time again in this match and Brazil's opener, he spent far too much time literally just jogging around, few challenges, little in the way of lung busting drive forwards, merely just running close to an opponent, but without actually being close enough to...well...do anything.

Now I know he has had a very long time playing without a rest, or a small break at best, so this has been noted, but a World Cup in your homeland, come on mate, midfielder who won't touch the ball. Of course I will give him this season, said I would for all the 7 new signings, but boy has he got to step it up. Maybe a good rest and sit out the opening few Prem fixtures?.

Anyway, Lloris. Not had alot to do...France looked good though, and all without Ribery, must admit that Griezmann looked tidy coming in from the Left. Reckon he would work a treat lining up with Lamela and Eriksen. That's fluidity!. Any thoughts on ex Spurs players at the World Cup?.

Modric playing for one of, if not the biggest clubs in World football, we all know how he is performing. What about Dos Santos?...Good opening game, does anyone miss Corluka?, what about Red card Wilson?. I was reminding myself the standard of crosses we have been missing from the Left of late thanks to BAE. He whipped in some beauties for Cameroon. What about Deuce...5th fastest World Cup goal of all time for USA, and from the Left. We got good money, but should we have held onto him a little longer?. Maybe Dempsey Left, Eriksen in the hole. Maybe you'd like to name your player of the tournament thus far?.

Well good people, this as they say is your lot...Well for now at least. On a closing note, you can still get quite favourable odds on Iran winning the World Cup. Not bad when you consider they sit second in their group only behind Argentina. Might want to stick a pony on that!.

Belgium looked like Spurs last night
10iscoach
Between AVB year 1 and AVB year 2 something has happened in Verts life. He is just a shadow of the man he used to be. Doesnt look to be enjoying football at all. Mousa, "i beat you, then give da ball away", just doesnt seem to know what to do in possession. i suggest he becomes our backup goalie, cos he's lost once he gets near the opponents box. Chadli looked better playing number 10, but who we gonna pick there, Ade, Eric, Eric? Sigs? Kills me to say it, Dim saw something in Nabil, and he was right. Must have been Ramsey's call. Pauli starting to look better, box to box. We missed a trick with Dempsey and Gio, let them go too soon, class, pure class.
10iscoach
It seems that the ex spurs players are playing better. I rather our players play bad in the world cup and turn on the style when the season starts but will that happen.
Kong
10is...I kind of thought I touched on that in the article. LOL!.
cider spurs
Mexico keeper is a free agent. Thought he put himself in the shop window to good effect last night.
cider spurs
Paulinho isn't a very good player, after a year I think its fair to say this! Chaldhi is slightly better but isn't top 4 quality, good versatility though. Bentaleb has great potential, dembele is one I would like to see potch work with! I think Vertonghen could actually be better as a holding mf, get Lescott to play lcb-far better at defending!!
spurticus87
Siggy, chaldhi, ade, ciriches, paulinho, dembele, soldado, rose, naughton, Lennon! If all of those left who would you actually miss or want to stay?
spurticus87
Sorry Cider, posted first, read second, lol. Is the Mexican left back available for transfer, shut Pauli and Oscar down completely. Mexi's are dark horses, very well organised. Benni showed Rose how its done at left back. One thing i have noticed about this world cup, is that most of the countries have a ball playing midfielder. As Spurs, who fills that role for us, Moussa, Pauli, Beast, Capoue? both of ours were out on loan at other clubs, one was put on left wing duty, and the other went missing. Bearing in mind we havent signed anyone, if Spurs are to play a 4-2-3-1 shifting to 4-3-3 formation, i suggest both Beast and Capoue as holding(at least Capoue can pass, Beast cant), Eriksen, Holtby, and Lamella to rotate behind Ade as floating midfielders. Shores up defense, has creativity, movement, ball playing midfielders who can spot a pass. i picked this based on what we have BASED on what i have seen at WC, not on Fantasy football
10iscoach
We have West Ham away for our first game of the season.
Kong
10is...Good man!...I too have been calling for a ball playing CM. We have far too many ball carrier types, and to be fair, based on last season, types that are not really all that at the ball carrying. Dembele, slows the play down, not enough product. Paulinho, much the same.

I agree with the double pivot being BOTH Sandro and Capoue, because based on what we have, Capoue at least can pass well and build good attack through passing. It is maybe why I was also excited about the prospect of Ever Banega coming to Spurs, great ball playing CM, another who is maybe yet another ball carrier, but is exceptional in the dribble and assists well for goals is Alvarez from Inter who can play CM, but also gets stuck in defensively.
cider spurs
Sorry Cider for going off topic with the fixtures.
Kong
can someone give out the first 6 and last 6
tarkan mardinCOYS
I'm glad to see that our players play just as poorly for their national teams as they do for us. If they'd been brilliant at the World Cup after what we saw last season at our club I'd have sued them all for defrauding us.

Excellent article Cider - especially about Lukaku ... ex spur impressing me the most is Gio ... Nabil - sent off ?

I think I heard the commentator say Gio scored 11 goals for Villareal last season. He also set up 8. Most of which came from him coming in off the Right and utilising his left peg. Seems like we may have already had our Lamela under our noses...if only he could stay out of the nightclubs.
cider spurs
I'll raise the point again. Do you think the amount of London derbies makes our job a little harder compared to the likes of Liverpool, United and City?. It is said by many that a derby fixture usually sees the underdogs raise their game, are we placed somewhat at a disadvantage to so called bigger teams who play outside London?.

WHLN...Your knowledge never ceases to amaze me. The 25th you say?...I'll stick it in the diary. ;-)

Cider, the northwest have a similar no. derbies in reality as the do stances aren't that different to London's... Burnley, Everloan, lpool, citeh manure are all within close proximity .... Should be looked as an advantage - less travelling time ?
Highgatespur
Reports that Chelsea want £32 million for Lukaku. Ouch!. Did read yesterday that Bony to Spurs shortened quite alot in the betting markets.

i have to admit it im not that enthused with the new season just yet,i have world cup fever
tarkan mardinCOYS
Cider, green and yellow always a good combination, I think !!! LOL
Highgatespur
Highgate I disagree somewhat. Liverpool vs Everton, and United. They are billed as the old enemy derbies. City will be seen as a main rival, no history like United and Liverpool. Everton only really have the Merseyside derby. United have City and Liverpool.

Spurs...West Ham, Chelsea, Arsenal all with massive rivalry, add to this QPR, Fulham (relegated I know), Palace all considered derbies and all add a little something because of this fact to the fixture. Newcastle vs Sunderland, who else?, WBA vs Aston Villa, occasionally Wolves, who else?. We have far more teams in London, and I may just go and see result wise whether the close proximity of other teams and the derby status does have a bearing.
cider spurs
So, with their performances in the WC, do we put the myth of "poor management" to bed or re-assess at the end of the group stages? There hasn't been a standout performance from any team really, so may be, still early day? May be the WC is missing Lamela!
Critical_Spur
Thanks ledleygomez and Tarkan for the fixtures saves the looking up!!! COYMS!
Highgatespur
BTW, a fair reflection Cider.
Critical_Spur
I agree WHLN. Also, the 1st games in the WC generally tend to be tense. Hope it livens up a bit. If there was any of our player looking at the WC as a 'window' then they need to buck up!
Critical_Spur
Critical if any of our players started well in the WC they would have been slaughtered on here for not caring enough. Of course bad management had a lot to do with their form - even the die hards would find it hard to say otherwise. I'm just hoping that the new season will bring a new lease of life. It is far too easy to damn those affected by the damned !!! Let go and try to enjoy the WC - that's what I'm trying to do !!!
Highgatespur
Critical...Cheers mate. Never nice pulling apart our own players performances, however, I always try to give an honest reflection on how I saw the players perform. Hopefully a more positive article to follow as the World Cup plays out.
cider spurs
Cider, back to the derbies, I think we'd have to agree no matter what, our record against the 3 main rivals were disgustingly appalling which others would have to try their 'hardest' to match us!!! 7 defeats out of 8 with a goal difference of -14 was truly disgustingly shameful!!!
Highgatespur
cider ... Great article! I've really only considered Spurs/Arsenal as a derby; both being (arguably) from N. London, the rest are just EPL games to me. Of course there are teams we love to beat more than others but ....
Geofspurs
Highgate, I appreciate that our players are in a no win position re their performance. I watch international matches for the sake of football foremost and of course keep a close eye on our players. Extremely disappointed that we have no representative in the England squad. But for others, I can't believe not a single stand-out performer in the opening stages. Hope it proves to be the spectacle that we all wish for. WC is a platform for the individuals to 1) shine and display their skills and 2) to return to their respective clubs holding their chins high and oozing with confidence for the next season. Hope that will be the case. ...oh, unless it was Ade then expect an extended vacation!
Critical_Spur
Maybe I should explain that some more ... Iíve always thought derbies are between the closest neighbours, ie, Liverpool/ Everton, United/City. Chelsea/Fulham, etc. I think, over the years people have confused local derbies with deadly rivals, hence Pool playing United becomes a derby ... deadly rivals can change but not the neighbour.
Geofspurs
I thought that Brazil could not play any worse than their first match. They did.... I think some people are finding it easier to criticise Paulinho playing for his country than at Spurs. I remember the anger of some posters when he was dropped last season but, for being just as bad. Scolari must be one of those THFC supporters, as I can't understand why he played him again last night.... Vertonghen looked as disinterested for Belgium as he did for most part of the season with us. I won't however judge Belgium as a whole, on one match... Nabil looked tidy, if a bit nervous but, no more so than anyone else playing their first WC match. Lloris looked outstanding just moving around his area with nothing much to do. He needed a rest. BAE looked confident as usual and is still a Spurs player. (I don't think he will be come August). Who cares about GDS? He's an ex that never looked at home at WHL. The rest? Not much to say, really.
MAN ON!
It took 3 Spurs players to beat one last night. We bought 7 players to replace one and look what didnít happen!
Geofspurs
Not just ours but imo there's been no stand out player at the tournament so far...Belgium were in complete control got caught on the counter...fair play algeria, the only way to play is sit 11 behind the ball and try and catch on the counter but Belgium tweaked it and broke them down....Portugal imploded to make Germany look good...while LVG and Herrera deserve credit for setting up their teams to counter the threat posed by Spain and Brazil respectably with LvG getting a spectacular success....in short the managers have caught up, there aren't many teams going gung ho 442 against the bigger teams as they know they'll get battered that way...
shedboy2
As for the fixtures, looks like we'll be dropping a few points in the first few weeks. I'll blame AVB and TS if we lose to WHU on day 1.
MAN ON!
didi hammann is laying into paulinho quite badly
tarkan mardinCOYS
Geof, I grew up thinking wham and chelski were miles away and the only derby were the games vs the nomads of N5, as their home was then. Norwich regarded us as their 'local derby'!!! The pressure games now include manure, Lpool and so on...
Highgatespur
I'll second third fourth and fifth the banner comments. Brazil reallllllly looks good so far. I think Chelski dodged one with De Bruyne, Pity!!! Swiss defenders anyone?
10iscoach
We have to remember that Paulinho has been playing non stop for the last three years with no break other than the injury period. It would have been better for him and Spurs if he hadn't been picked for the World Cup. I'm not sure he would agree.
ItalianYiddo
the hammers despise us more than the chavs or arsenal for some reason.i know a few
tarkan mardinCOYS
Have some of you never seen a pair of bikini clad breasts before? A woman, without a head, (or is it a transexual), never did look that attractive to me!
MAN ON!
ItalianYiddo. He was given a rest at Spurs. He rested mostly, whilst still on the pitch and, looks like he's now enjoying a 4 week break back at home.
MAN ON!
I watched Belgium against Tunisia?, they played the exact same way, very slow, very predictable, dont managers see that when playing at that pace it give the opposition time to re-organise, they eventually won the game 1-0, not that i continued watching the 2nd half, they are going to be a massive disappointment if they carry on playing the way they have been. I agree with what you said about Pauliniho, what does he actually do? doesnt tackle, doesnt really attack, a few side ways passes, i dont like the players who are OK at everything and great at nothing.
coys1717
I love, love, love the picture! Well done oxfordspur!!!! Good news about our players not firing is they won't be in the market to move on! It's gonna take a while to shake last season off for most of them! Their coaches believe in them, so do I. They will pick up I'm sure!
Dublin Hotspur
I'm hoping that Suarez has as much of a nightmare WC as so many others are..... I'm always disappointed when England don't have any Spurs players in the Squad but it is probably a good thing. To have 3 of them under performing, as with Belgium last night, would make for some uncomfortable viewing.
MAN ON!
Dublin Hotspur. Does your wife know where you are?

Dublin. In football you only get 90 mins to shake it off.... Were the whole of Belgium and Brazil playing for Spurs last season?

Gio was young and randy when he was with us.He's grown up now and heavens what a player we let go.Thanks Harry!
Greavesaboveall
It's tough playing the world cup in your homeland and it being a once in a lifetime privilege. If I was playing right now I'd be showing some effort at least. Paulinho, Jan and the rest are professionals, supposedly living the dream. I say step it up for both club and country or just concentrate on your modelling careers. Presuming they'd still have one. Wake up and play some bloody football.
MAN ON!
Maybe that is just how Paulinho is, we have seen glimpses of what he can do but more of what he can't do. This might be just the way Paulinho's game is and he is consistent at it.
Kong
Gio was getting paid to grow up at Spurs? No he was getting paid to play football.
MAN ON!
Dublin ... The bad news about our players not firing is ... weíre stuck with them. Theyíre going to have to start firing soon, we all hope!
Geofspurs
It looks like half of them at the WC have spent more time at the hair salon than on the training pitch. Far too many peacocks and not enough lions and tigers....
MAN ON!
Australia tonight! They only have to beat Spain and the Netherlands and the final is in the bag (hehehehe). Has to be 3-0 to someone!
Geofspurs
Why is it that the underdogs are more exciting to watch?. Mexico gave it a good go and had their chances. Russia v S Korea was very enjoyable too. Then again, I thought England were underdogs too.....somebody had to break the trend!

As for the England group, seems obvious that apart from Italy, it will go down to the last games for the 2nd place. Mentality.......just like spurs, is what is needed.
Critical_Spur
Sometimes you have to cut young players some slack if they are talented. You were 20 once upon a time Man-on,how responsible were you then?I was a complete idiot.
Greavesaboveall
Looks like the Kid has to be our new club captain. I think we should build the team around him.
Geofspurs
Dublin, agree with Cider one of the best banners around... it's good to appreciate good things around you. I'd hate to see the tonking our players would get if they were to have played their FIRST and for Paulinho SECOND game of the WC... anyway I wonder how players like Fred, Hulk, Alves, Marcello and the rest are feeling having played so well and having to put to put up with Paulinho... such piety is a good example to us all!!! I just wish the players use this period to 'shower off' the effects of last season and come back to N17 all refreshed for the new season... coming for the Schalke match ? - first home game for MRP!!!

So, how many points you reckon from the first 9 games ?
Highgatespur
Paulinho seems to have lost his mojo. Fingers crossed he'll be fired up for the new season. COYS!

Greavesaboveall. I wasn't playing professional football.... I'm a complete idiot now but not when I'm working. It's ok to be young and virile but if it affects their play on the pitch then it's not worth standing by them. It's not as though he was playing like Gazza or Best after a night on the tiles.
MAN ON!
Greaves .. I'm tempted to predict MAN's response to that.

imo Gio showed real potential when he was with us....but we didn't play a system that suited him...and even if he'd stayed under AVB he'd have got blasted by our 'knowledgeable' fans for being an inverted winger, which as they constantly write doesn't work...
shedboy2
Levy looking smug in the banner...then there would only be one tit!?

Paulinho played a full season for Corhintians, straight into the Confederations Cup, full season at Spurs and than straight into the World Cup. Yes, just like every other player.

Teams are not just going to come flying out at Brazil, Spain, Argentina et al and allow them to play through and around them...those days are over...unless of course Roy sets us up to do exactly that!...;)

TBH Highgate, I am not sure how he won the player of the tournament in the Confed Cup (may be a sign of how average the tournament was). Perhaps be he needs a couple of his shots to go in to get his mojo back.

Paulinho, Chadli and Dembele are unfortunately 3 of the most overrated players in world football. How Paulinho and Chadli get in their national sides is beyond me. Both should be sold this summer we need better.

clivetheyid - just like Oscar, Willian, Hulk, freehand Rooney !!!

All of the Brazilian team looks nervy compared to confedí cup. Paulinho has far from being their worst player. Marcelo own goal, making big deals about challenges, lousy crosses. Oscar scored a cheeky goal but is being muscled off the ball way too easy, not putting in a decent shift. Hulk?? Fred?? Very Very pooooor. The guy who gets the award for worst moustache in the worldcup2014, what is he doing?? At least Pauli has been charging forward and has come close to scoring himself. He does need to improve, but the above even more so or I see the whole Brazil squad shifting around. Didnít watch Belgium. Dos Santos, where the ***** did that little twisty ferret come from?? We only got half a whiff of that type of play at Spurs. Wonder if he can keep it up. COYS.

Hey James, Yes I am. The Australian game stars at midnight so Iíll watch that and record the Croatia game and watch it tomorrow ... I donít know why though; I get so depressed! It looks like being an interesting WC.
Geofspurs
Even more depressing Geof about a certain player linked to Chelsea :( COYS!
a.k.a.james1spurs
James ... Shhhhhh! :-)
Geofspurs
james, he'll never go there - he's got it all made at Madrid!!!
Highgatespur
Those boobs have been on the go now -for the last few years, she must be fairly ropey at this stage but many say she looked worse when she was a man, any chance, what with the world cup in Brazil and all, that we might see an up dated banner image for brazil, Only the Blonde Hag is in worse shape.
Slurms McKenzie
Gonna grab a couple of hours sleep before the game. Címon Aussies, Címon, Címon! COYS!
Geofspurs
tottingham10- michu's value must have dropped...and he could be a good option who could play with Ade or Soldado...
shedboy2
Slurms, interesting you know all this.... LOL!
Highgatespur
But haven't we already gotm Erisksen at the club, and Holtby, and Lamela and Siggy and Kane and Dembele whoa re all supoosed to be albel to play in the hole behind the striker we don't have many players that can play down teh winds and whip in a cross or cut inside and test teh keeper. Those are the players we shoudl be focusing on and signing. Not padding out our already bloated midfield with more central players.
Slurms McKenzie
Even "play down the wings" only if they don't wash should they be made play down wind
Slurms McKenzie
Attention to Details Highgate both my curse and my gift!
Slurms McKenzie
where's coopsieyid when you need him to bring order?!!!
Highgatespur
He's possibly trying to photograph a new banner image, Ox asked him to do this 18 months ago and seems like he has been unsuccessfully but very productive!!!!
Slurms McKenzie
Slurms, read the absurdity....

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/football/teams/tottenham-hotspur/10909166/Tottenham-line-up-shock-3m-bid-for-John-OShea-of-Sunderland.html
Highgatespur
Well Ronaldo was a big disappointment. Time to move on to Modric, although he's now unrecognisable without the blonde wig. Ooooh Luka!
MAN ON!
Any chance of any football today? Anyone got any streams for the ex-Spurs' match?
MAN ON!
slurms- absolutely, a couple of players with pace, technique and a goal threat....Michu was a good call as he can interchange but Lukaku, Konoplyanka...and Rodriguez at LB who did look good against Ecuador...these are the sort of players we should be after not trying to 'upgrade' Pauli with Behrami...lol
shedboy2
Highagte takes the prize for the worst transfer story of the window...so far!
Slurms McKenzie
Can we get new Poll about whether we should have a new Poll or not. Because the only poll that mattered when it came to Pochettino has been asked and answered so further polling is kinda redundent.
Slurms McKenzie
Top five whooho!!! and its more then half way through the month, just shows how much vital spurs traffic has dropped off!!!
Slurms McKenzie
If only Fosters did Lager...... Come on you Aussies!
MAN ON!
Slurms, I did say absurdity ...could you just imagine ?!!!!
Highgatespur
O'Shea is good, flexible at the back and a very experienced player. Why not?
MAN ON!
Was O'Shea not one of those that undermined the previous nutter Di Canio?!
Critical_Spur
BTW, anyone know when West Ham are moving to the OS?.. Wished it was next season so we can be party poopers!
Critical_Spur
john o shea is the greatest
tarkan mardinCOYS
Tarkan he is the greatest something, certainly not defender, footballer or Irishman. shockign fitness record. we already have too many water carriers in the squad.
Slurms McKenzie
water carrier ? Slurms - he'd pull up a muscle carrying a cup of water !!! Next will be the Richard Dunne speculation that will be welcomed!!!
Highgatespur
buy one get one free-o shea followed by wes brown haha-maybe 6-7 years ago not now
tarkan mardinCOYS
Highgate only if the new defensive plan is to build up bodies in the goal mouth!!!!
Slurms McKenzie
Where's Dublin - still examining the banner pic ? LOL!!!
Highgatespur
Although John O shea on a hospital bed stacked on top of Richard Dunne on a Hospital bed would be pretty difficult ot score past.
Slurms McKenzie
Either that or washing his eyes with bleech after spotting the scars!!!
Slurms McKenzie
Slurms - plan? You are hopeful!!!
Highgatespur
Slurms -another name and he's on a free - Haangaland?
Highgatespur
WHLN, don't you know Soldado is gonna hit the ground running next season! The Poch factor. or should that be White Hart Lane's got talent! COYS!
Critical_Spur
WoW what a goal - cahill!!!
Highgatespur
Marco van Basten!!!!
Highgatespur
People do imagine stuff... Apart from one season of injury, 4 years ago, O'Shea has played a hell of a lot of matches and been very consistent... Is this yet another case of SAF not knowing what he was doing!?
MAN ON!
O'Shea: 41 matches last season. A darn sight more than our young lad Lamella managed.
MAN ON!
Not that I want him at Spurs anyway but to slag of a player who has 5 PL winners medals is just a little bit unfair.
MAN ON!
Aussies are doing a better job than Spain.
MAN ON!
Critical - I think the OS is due to be infested in 2016....
Highgatespur
Haangaland as a stop gap we could alot worse...
Slurms McKenzie
Ashley Cole's the man for me. Same age as O'Shea but a much better option, unless we're after a jack of all trades......
MAN ON!
Slurms I was only joking re Haangaland -classic way to get a rumour started!!! Watch - we're linked with him soon... LOL
Highgatespur
COYA!!!!
Highgatespur
YES!!!!!! Come on Aussies!!! You ok there ? Geof?!!!
Highgatespur
LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Hmmmmmm.
MAN ON!
Oh no!!!
Highgatespur
What a match! Aussies are well up for it! Fair play to them. Great game to watch!
Dublin Hotspur
I just wish Aussies had scored their 3rd goal instead of the Dutch....
Highgatespur
Slurms, here's the latest ....maybe the reason Franco was in Spain...

http://tottenhamhotspur.blogspot.co.uk/2014/06/tottenham-want-marcelo.html
Highgatespur
It is all over the internet that we are to offer £3M for O'Shea from Sunderland. If there is any truth in this, somebody at Spurs have lost their marbles completely. This would be another Ryan Nelson moment and a drastic retrograde step for a top 6 club (for now). The report is so extensive that there must surely be some hint of truth in this. We seem to be determined to go backwards.
Frank
Unlucky and well played Aussies.
Highgatespur
Frank - it's lazy journalism - a lot of 'reports' are cut and paste... they are determined for that 1000th player to be linked with Spurs this summer. We are an easy target.... But Marcelo ?
Highgatespur
the daily telegraph is a reputable source.i pray to god this is not true
tarkan mardinCOYS
i am dreading this window.daniel levy wont be spending big this time round me thinks
tarkan mardinCOYS
ROJO the left-back for Argentina looks like a decent shout..

Hernandez made a difference in the Mexico team when he came on.
Yidmarks
Yidmarks; I think that's what Hernandez does but wants a starting spot which he is not good at ... anyway one of the 1000!
Highgatespur
EZEQUIEL GARAY

50% of his transfer fee goes to Real Madrid because of the sell-on clause.

He might be on his way to ZENIT to play for a certain AVB...

Have a word LEVY, we could knock that off the slate and nick him for 8-10m...

COYS... top class CB
Yidmarks
yidmarks-why havnt we moved in for joleon lescott?yet we are apparently looking at john o shea
tarkan mardinCOYS

tarkan mardinCOYS
1000!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WOW

WHL, apologies for my tardiness. My comment re players being not in the market was tongue in cheek. But I agree wholeheartedly with your response!
Dublin Hotspur
Oh and on your choice of striker in 4231. Robbie. Lukaku will not be sold to us. Ade will be off. Bony will come so there's your choice! It was remy arse were after!
Dublin Hotspur
Highgate. Apologies, just finished washing bleach out of my eyes. Slurms is right! She is ragged now! Nips exploded and Booty collapsed
Dublin Hotspur
If John O shea is the answer the question must be are we skint?....his star waned ages ago...like Lescott it's time to move on...
shedboy2
Dublin - fine details - are replicas available in markets now ? See her bobbing among when she crowd surfaces? Was backing for the Aussies this PM - so near yet so far!
Highgatespur
He struggles to get picked for Ireland to be fair! And that is saying something!
Dublin Hotspur
I think O'shea had a much better season than Jan....
MAN ON!
How is signing O'Shea is better than signing Lescott? As for Marcelo, the journo's really must be bored.
vicspur
Best Spurs player WC IMO is Benny but he aint coming home, is he?
Thats Entertainment
Dublin, shedboy2; I really can't see how he will improve the defence ... from what I saw of him of late - he's been quite error prone... he was on the subs bench at WHL and I didn't go the SoL game - so didn't see last year - so comments from the year before.... I thought MRP prefers the high line.... Anyway Spain to win, for me.
Highgatespur
Just imagine Benny at LB, what an upgrade that would be!!!!
Thats Entertainment
TE , agreed but the quenelle will stop him resurfacing at WHL I think...
Highgatespur
What a goal! Come on chile!
Dublin Hotspur
Highgate I would like to see Chi win, so Spain go home before us LOL
Thats Entertainment
Yeah forgot about that Highgate, Rose it is then, DOH!!
Thats Entertainment
WHL, is the Itai supposed to be an underhand insult? A bit feeble, for someone of your reputation, than again we don't want to go in too strong and get banned like another previous poster who was so desperate to stay on the site that changed his name over and over again, do we know?
ItalianYiddo
Italian, Topo underhand and desperate? LOL.
Thats Entertainment
TE, which topho? There were several incarnations, some would call it an epidemic....
ItalianYiddo
TE - good goal! I think the European teams will suffer as the most of the others know their play by playing in Europe... it was good to see Aussies challenge the Nederlands - btw I did think RvP should've been sent off... Costa not having good un...
Highgatespur
Spain are dire, deserve to go home, the hi-def slow mo makes the footie players look even bigger ponces. They'd be in agony on any crowded bus or train based on the amount of screaming that is done when they slightly brush legs or knees with someone.
Slurms McKenzie
TE who's Rose ? We just gotta sign a LB....Rodrigues or Davies or Marcello - who knows?!!! I see the Belgians had a good one... wonder if he'll do ok for Spurs.... 2-0 !!! Casillas done for I think ...
Highgatespur
Spain paying the price for picking Iker, can't wait to see him in a gooners shirt.
Slurms McKenzie
Every empire rises and falls, Spain's reign is about to fall, maybe Juan Carlos knew something........
ItalianYiddo
Its going home, its going home, tiki taki football's going home...
Slurms McKenzie
Football fans are the real winners, no more boring 75% possesion matches with two shots on target. Revenge for giving Ireland a hammering in the euros.
Slurms McKenzie
Spain ain't lost yet...
MAN ON!
Spain, the first team knocked out ? did anyone bet on that ?
Highgatespur
When I was seventeen, I drank some very good beer.
I drank some very good beer I purchased with a fake ID.
My name was Brian MaGee.
I stayed up listening to Queen.
When I was seventeen.
Slurms McKenzie
odds on Real madrid making a bid on lloris?
Crazyspursfan
Yup I switched over to The Simpsons
Slurms McKenzie
I reckon Spain would still turn us over.
Thats Entertainment
Gotta say old Hodgson looks like a defeated man ...
Highgatespur
Long way to go Highgate, England can win the next two games.
ItalianYiddo
Spain are double champions after all - surely a strong show in the second half...
Highgatespur
What a miss by Costa!!!
Highgatespur
Even Robbie would've got that! It was from within the box!
Critical_Spur
My word, miss of the tournament!
Critical_Spur
To be fair sergio was nearly 2 metres out and only half the goal was open and he was only standing in front of the open half...
Slurms McKenzie
The Spanish are missing Soldado ... LOL
Highgatespur
Whatever team you got in Ciders little world cup draw, you gotta be happy that they managed to stay in the competition longer then Spain...
Slurms McKenzie
Highgate, just about to say the same thing, they're crying out for him, he knew how to miss with flair...
Slurms McKenzie
Ardiles is a legend! Orange tie!! Lol
Dublin Hotspur
Slurms.... plenty of practice I dare say - all good next season!!
Highgatespur
More entertaining then the match Dublin, I'm not sure Bill even knows what hes saying!
Slurms McKenzie
Anyone think the crowd is having a massive influence on the pitch? Need that at the lane again. Especially now we can "sing what we want"
Dublin Hotspur
Whats happened to the Spaniards ?
Highgatespur
At least Isla is keeping it interesting
Slurms McKenzie
I'm sure Dublin, now that we have bolstered other areas!!!
Highgatespur
Highgate, I think they hired Fernando Torres' sports physiologist for the national team...
Slurms McKenzie
Sanchez for Spurs!
Slurms McKenzie
No plan B it seems - even for the double Champions!!!
Highgatespur
Very impressed with Chile. Quick movement, closing down Spain. A combination of tika taka + forward movement at pace. Very good. Can't see Spain getting back in to this game.
Critical_Spur
He's just like Lennon, except he can play football...
Slurms McKenzie
The ex-gooner is on now
Slurms McKenzie
Well Slurms it looks like it .... fancy bringing on someone who hasn't been chosen by them since last summer...
Highgatespur
Nice story from the Lane - please ignore this off topic post if you are not interested...

http://www.myoldmansaid.com/aston-villa-away-fans-inflatables-spurs-acorn-donation/?
Highgatespur
Chile were fantastic. Adios amigos...
MAN ON!
Gotta say the Spanish deserve a lot of praise for being three title winners ... brilliant .... now hopefully they will retire from the stage in good grace...
Highgatespur
Highgate, it'd be interesting to see how they re-group and reshape the squad. I think their production line of talent is creaking! Wonder who will replace them for the European glory.....Holland/Germany? May be Pep knew what he was doing when he left Barca...
Critical_Spur
Critical I think Ireland under Martin O'Neil will probably take over from Spain as the best team in europe if not the world. ?.
Slurms McKenzie
Critical - I think Pep might be the one to take over as for the style who knows ... they have had a run unknown to football before...
Highgatespur
England are ready take over the throne from Spain....
Highgatespur
I just got in from work and my fiancť said guess who spurs are linked to today I couldnít believe she told me it was john o shea.

Italy-England final? Odds should be good
ItalianYiddo
I like the idea of youth in the England squad. Good foundation for the future. We've relied on the old brigade for far too long and it needed a radical change. However, I am not convinced that Roy is the man to take us to the next level. Need someone along the lines of Rodgers imo. Can U imagine if Harry was in charge of England....average age would've been 29! And according to The Mirror, "Harry Redknapp says the current England squad is the worst for years."
Critical_Spur
WHLN, would you like to meet up so we can see who's the bigger coward? Anywhere you like in London.
ItalianYiddo
Let me know when you are back, City is fine
ItalianYiddo
IY, that would be a turn up for the books an all European final ... but don't count the chicken as yet .... could it be Spain out tonight and Uruguay out tomorrow ... who knows ? They decide .... LOL
Highgatespur
Dublin, can U give us the odds for the big one please... WHLN v the Italian Stallion! Seems the weigh-in has already taken place! :0)
Critical_Spur
Critical - will cider be there to write a report on the meet ?
Highgatespur
Highgate, Ovyeh for the pre and Cider for the Post! We might even get a bit of ITK on it!
Critical_Spur
And if you want an history lesson I will give you one as you are such an ignorant ****. Are you basing your assumption on the Second Word War? Do you know anything on Italy's involvement? It wasn't Italy's war, it was Mussolini's war, why would the conscripts want to get killed to fight his war, to what end? The whole of Italy welcomed the Allies as liberators not enemies. Did you know any of this you thick ignorant piece of shiete?
ItalianYiddo
Dublin to donate some FREE bets!
Critical_Spur
Critical - to be an ITK on this one the Passport Agency might have to be called into action - I hear they are overwhelmed with work at the moment.
Highgatespur
Dublin will bag all the free bets - quite a few variations here I think!!!
Highgatespur
Mr T in goal for Cameroon?
Critical_Spur
Critical - a thinner version - juice diet probably ....
Highgatespur
Uphill battle now thanks to the sending off!

Btw, Don't think Spain are the 1st team to be sent home early. I have a suspicion the team of 3 Chinese officials that refereed the 1st Brazil game may have been given their boarding passes. Not seen them since!
Critical_Spur
That was sheer thuggery by the ex goon... don't worry they will re appear in the final!
Highgatespur
Amazing.. BAE headbutts one of hi steam mates and had to be restrained by Eto from hitting him at the final whistle. Stunning!!!
Highgatespur
A Daily Spur Exclusive... Sensational!!! Now what shall I have for breakfast?
MAN ON!
It would be good if we could elevate the debate a little on here...we go from the glib to the moronic and just plain ignorant...what happened to the posters that understood the game? too few remain...
shedboy2
slurms- we had half a chance at Sanchez 18 mths ago when he couldn't get a kick at Barca and was very unhappy...that is the time to go hard after a player, to really make them feel wanted...unfortunately we don't seem to do that....
shedboy2
shedboy2. Who would they be then?
MAN ON!
I didn't know Spurs were playing at the World Cup. Nor would I expect many footballers doing well at the World Cup to do as well in the Premier League, what with all the many differences that operate on and off the pitch.
