Spurs in Brazil: The report!

Spurs in Brazil: The report!

Well, seeming all the teams in the World Cup have played at least one game, I thought now would be a good time to reflect on how our Spurs lads have fared thus far.

With most on display in the Belgium vs Algeria fixture, seems the obvious place to start. Belgium line up in a 4-2-3-1 formation. LB saw Vertonghen, Dembele paired in the middle with Witsel and Chadli was afforded the hole in behind Lukaku. Algeria went 4-1-4-1, with our 19 year old Bentaleb lining up for Algeria.

Belgium...Dark Horses was the cry, a thought that a few had directed at Spurs prior to last seasons start after much spending. It seemed rather apt, for I saw many similarities to the way Belgium played in this match to as to what I witnessed last season from Spurs. However dark horse it was not, I'd suggest more an albino Shetland Pony. The similarities come from the slow, un-penetrative often clueless brand of attack. Add to this the defensive lapse, and speculative shots from range, people...am I jogging your memories?.

Dembele...Again once more gliding past players, then a release to a team mate or a scuffed half shot. However, what does usually happen after Dembele's surge forward and pass, is his continual belief that he should stop as soon as the pass is made. Why?, if he can glide past so easily with the ball, it should be a stroll in the park to continue the run without it. Please can you look to start playing some good one, twos with players?, you have all the skills required, but a lack of belief, far too often I witness this at Spurs, reaffirming my view in this game.

If we look at Bentaleb, he is different, he gives the pass, and many times, the first thing on his mind is to drive forward to receive it straight back, or at least stay on the move to present an option albeit from pretty much whence it came. On the point of Nabil...Loved that first time ball out to the wing for the cross that led to the penalty, and what about the forearm smash on Dembele...payback for a flailing arm by Moose. One looked accidental, the other...Have that!. Ah! yes, that brings me nicely on to the penalty.

Did anybody else notice prior to the penalty, a little time before there was a cross that went into the box from the Left, seemed in the area for an age, Vertonghen was nowhere to be seen. I know the TV cameras can make player positions seem worse than they actually are, but I sat thinking to myself, Vert's will be here to help with this, nope, nope, nope. In fact he never arrived, even the commentator mentioning that was almost trouble, but Vert's had left it for others to attend. At least he tried to get back for the penalty, but let's be honest, pretty shocking positioning from a ball that has travelled down the opposite flank prior?.

Chadli, not alot to say really, couple of bursts with no end result, same as Dembele. I do appreciate it was hard, Algeria defended deep, sat deep and basically said, break us down, heck even Lukaku had to be subbed, no service equals ineffective. Now who was involved with this argument before?...our #9?...Bet Lukaku will be forgiven though. After all, it was not his fault, was it...?

All in all, I thought Algeria played the best way they possibly could, and nearly got the rewards. Harsh result on them in the end, but to be honest, Belgium did not cover themselves in glory, partly because Algeria stuck to a good game plan in most part, and partly of their own making. A final thought on this match, my last similarity between Belgium and Spurs in this fixture...Belgium went a goal down, but fought hard to win. Go Spurs!.

Come on keep up!...Brazil vs Mexico... Well Paulinho kept his place, surprising really, I thought he was poor in the opener, this was just as bad. Here's the thing, most of the Brazil side have looked poor, so it may seem harsh picking out Paulinho, but I am only looking at his performance as he plays for Spurs, I do however understand he is not the only player guilty in this current Brazil team.

What is it with him?...He has a habit, bugging me the more I see it unfold before my eyes. He very often seems to run in the proximity of a player, but seldom to make the tackle, he's never close enough. He shifts left, but the opponent speeds up, and doesn't actually beat Paulinho, because now Paulinho is jogging close, but behind and leaving it for another, even in attack, he seldom busts a gut with these late runs into the box. I watched time and time again in this match and Brazil's opener, he spent far too much time literally just jogging around, few challenges, little in the way of lung busting drive forwards, merely just running close to an opponent, but without actually being close enough to...well...do anything.

Now I know he has had a very long time playing without a rest, or a small break at best, so this has been noted, but a World Cup in your homeland, come on mate, midfielder who won't touch the ball. Of course I will give him this season, said I would for all the 7 new signings, but boy has he got to step it up. Maybe a good rest and sit out the opening few Prem fixtures?.

Anyway, Lloris. Not had alot to do...France looked good though, and all without Ribery, must admit that Griezmann looked tidy coming in from the Left. Reckon he would work a treat lining up with Lamela and Eriksen. That's fluidity!. Any thoughts on ex Spurs players at the World Cup?.

Modric playing for one of, if not the biggest clubs in World football, we all know how he is performing. What about Dos Santos?...Good opening game, does anyone miss Corluka?, what about Red card Wilson?. I was reminding myself the standard of crosses we have been missing from the Left of late thanks to BAE. He whipped in some beauties for Cameroon. What about Deuce...5th fastest World Cup goal of all time for USA, and from the Left. We got good money, but should we have held onto him a little longer?. Maybe Dempsey Left, Eriksen in the hole. Maybe you'd like to name your player of the tournament thus far?.

Well good people, this as they say is your lot...Well for now at least. On a closing note, you can still get quite favourable odds on Iran winning the World Cup. Not bad when you consider they sit second in their group only behind Argentina. Might want to stick a pony on that!.

Between AVB year 1 and AVB year 2 something has happened in Verts life. He is just a shadow of the man he used to be. Doesnt look to be enjoying football at all. Mousa, "i beat you, then give da ball away", just doesnt seem to know what to do in possession. i suggest he becomes our backup goalie, cos he's lost once he gets near the opponents box. Chadli looked better playing number 10, but who we gonna pick there, Ade, Eric, Eric? Sigs? Kills me to say it, Dim saw something in Nabil, and he was right. Must have been Ramsey's call. Pauli starting to look better, box to box. We missed a trick with Dempsey and Gio, let them go too soon, class, pure class.

It seems that the ex spurs players are playing better. I rather our players play bad in the world cup and turn on the style when the season starts but will that happen.

Paulinho isn't a very good player, after a year I think its fair to say this! Chaldhi is slightly better but isn't top 4 quality, good versatility though. Bentaleb has great potential, dembele is one I would like to see potch work with! I think Vertonghen could actually be better as a holding mf, get Lescott to play lcb-far better at defending!!

Sorry Cider, posted first, read second, lol. Is the Mexican left back available for transfer, shut Pauli and Oscar down completely. Mexi's are dark horses, very well organised. Benni showed Rose how its done at left back. One thing i have noticed about this world cup, is that most of the countries have a ball playing midfielder. As Spurs, who fills that role for us, Moussa, Pauli, Beast, Capoue? both of ours were out on loan at other clubs, one was put on left wing duty, and the other went missing. Bearing in mind we havent signed anyone, if Spurs are to play a 4-2-3-1 shifting to 4-3-3 formation, i suggest both Beast and Capoue as holding(at least Capoue can pass, Beast cant), Eriksen, Holtby, and Lamella to rotate behind Ade as floating midfielders. Shores up defense, has creativity, movement, ball playing midfielders who can spot a pass. i picked this based on what we have BASED on what i have seen at WC, not on Fantasy football

10is...Good man!...I too have been calling for a ball playing CM. We have far too many ball carrier types, and to be fair, based on last season, types that are not really all that at the ball carrying. Dembele, slows the play down, not enough product. Paulinho, much the same.

I agree with the double pivot being BOTH Sandro and Capoue, because based on what we have, Capoue at least can pass well and build good attack through passing. It is maybe why I was also excited about the prospect of Ever Banega coming to Spurs, great ball playing CM, another who is maybe yet another ball carrier, but is exceptional in the dribble and assists well for goals is Alvarez from Inter who can play CM, but also gets stuck in defensively.

I think I heard the commentator say Gio scored 11 goals for Villareal last season. He also set up 8. Most of which came from him coming in off the Right and utilising his left peg. Seems like we may have already had our Lamela under our noses...if only he could stay out of the nightclubs.

I'll raise the point again. Do you think the amount of London derbies makes our job a little harder compared to the likes of Liverpool, United and City?. It is said by many that a derby fixture usually sees the underdogs raise their game, are we placed somewhat at a disadvantage to so called bigger teams who play outside London?.

Highgate I disagree somewhat. Liverpool vs Everton, and United. They are billed as the old enemy derbies. City will be seen as a main rival, no history like United and Liverpool. Everton only really have the Merseyside derby. United have City and Liverpool.

Spurs...West Ham, Chelsea, Arsenal all with massive rivalry, add to this QPR, Fulham (relegated I know), Palace all considered derbies and all add a little something because of this fact to the fixture. Newcastle vs Sunderland, who else?, WBA vs Aston Villa, occasionally Wolves, who else?. We have far more teams in London, and I may just go and see result wise whether the close proximity of other teams and the derby status does have a bearing.

So, with their performances in the WC, do we put the myth of "poor management" to bed or re-assess at the end of the group stages? There hasn't been a standout performance from any team really, so may be, still early day? May be the WC is missing Lamela!

Critical if any of our players started well in the WC they would have been slaughtered on here for not caring enough. Of course bad management had a lot to do with their form - even the die hards would find it hard to say otherwise. I'm just hoping that the new season will bring a new lease of life. Cider, back to the derbies, I think we'd have to agree no matter what, our record against the 3 main rivals were disgustingly appalling which others would have to try their 'hardest' to match us!!! 7 defeats out of 8 with a goal difference of -14 was truly disgustingly shameful!!!

Highgate, I appreciate that our players are in a no win position re their performance. I watch international matches for the sake of football foremost and of course keep a close eye on our players. Extremely disappointed that we have no representative in the England squad. But for others, I can't believe not a single stand-out performer in the opening stages. Hope it proves to be the spectacle that we all wish for. WC is a platform for the individuals to 1) shine and display their skills and 2) to return to their respective clubs holding their chins high and oozing with confidence for the next season. Hope that will be the case. ...oh, unless it was Ade then expect an extended vacation!

Maybe I should explain that some more ... I’ve always thought derbies are between the closest neighbours, ie, Liverpool/ Everton, United/City. Chelsea/Fulham, etc. I think, over the years people have confused local derbies with deadly rivals, hence Pool playing United becomes a derby ... deadly rivals can change but not the neighbour.

I thought that Brazil could not play any worse than their first match. They did.... I think some people are finding it easier to criticise Paulinho playing for his country than at Spurs. I remember the anger of some posters when he was dropped last season but, for being just as bad. Scolari must be one of those THFC supporters, as I can't understand why he played him again last night.... Vertonghen looked as disinterested for Belgium as he did for most part of the season with us. I won't however judge Belgium as a whole, on one match... Nabil looked tidy, if a bit nervous but, no more so than anyone else playing their first WC match. Lloris looked outstanding just moving around his area with nothing much to do. He needed a rest. BAE looked confident as usual and is still a Spurs player. (I don't think he will be come August). Who cares about GDS? He's an ex that never looked at home at WHL. The rest? Not much to say, really.

Not just ours but imo there's been no stand out player at the tournament so far...Belgium were in complete control got caught on the counter...fair play algeria, the only way to play is sit 11 behind the ball and try and catch on the counter but Belgium tweaked it and broke them down....Portugal imploded to make Germany look good...while LVG and Herrera deserve credit for setting up their teams to counter the threat posed by Spain and Brazil respectably with LvG getting a spectacular success....in short the managers have caught up, there aren't many teams going gung ho 442 against the bigger teams as they know they'll get battered that way...

I watched Belgium against Tunisia?, they played the exact same way, very slow, very predictable, dont managers see that when playing at that pace it give the opposition time to re-organise, they eventually won the game 1-0, not that i continued watching the 2nd half, they are going to be a massive disappointment if they carry on playing the way they have been. I agree with what you said about Pauliniho, what does he actually do? doesnt tackle, doesnt really attack, a few side ways passes, i dont like the players who are OK at everything and great at nothing.

Dublin, agree with Cider one of the best banners around... it's good to appreciate good things around you. I'd hate to see the tonking our players would get if they were to have played their FIRST and for Paulinho SECOND game of the WC... anyway I wonder how players like Fred, Hulk, Alves, Marcello and the rest are feeling having played so well and having to put to put up with Paulinho... such piety is a good example to us all!!! I just wish the players use this period to 'shower off' the effects of last season and come back to N17 all refreshed for the new season... coming for the Schalke match ? - first home game for MRP!!!

So, how many points you reckon from the first 9 games ?

Paulinho seems to have lost his mojo. Fingers crossed he'll be fired up for the new season. COYS!

Greavesaboveall. I wasn't playing professional football.... I'm a complete idiot now but not when I'm working. It's ok to be young and virile but if it affects their play on the pitch then it's not worth standing by them. It's not as though he was playing like Gazza or Best after a night on the tiles.
MAN ON!
