Crunch Time

Crunch Time

Just as we don't appear to have much patience when it comes to managers we seem to have a similar attitude when it comes to players.

One thing that the club have improved a lot in the past ten years is the development of young players, admittedly from a very low base. Its something Sherwood deserves some credit for and I keep asking myself why, if Levy had no intention of keeping him as manager, he was prepared to put the academy at risk just to fill the manager's shoes for half a season.

One point Sherwood made about player development was that even with the loan system there comes a point where you have to play these prospects, or there is no point in developing them in the first place. But its the close season and once again its all about transfers, about bringing in players. This would be fine if we were City and could buy anyone we liked, but we aren't.

Like any club trying to punch above our weight we need to make the most of whatever we already have and spend money to fill the gaps. There are at least two players at the club for whom next season is to my mind crunch time, we play them regularly and develop them or we waste them.

The first is Nabil Bentalab, three years younger than Christian Eriksen and already representing Algeria in the World Cup - yet Spurs fans seem to completely under rate him. Maybe its because, in Sherwood's words, 'he has a bit of everything' rather than being a clearly defined type of player. But a player who can control a ball, hold off an opponent and pass accurately and also defend is valuable to any team.

His game still needs work, his tackling particularly, but if he can play like this at 19 imagine what he could be like at 22. Harry Kane is a year older, so theoretically less room for improvement. But quality strikers are the rarest and most expensive players in football and at the end of last season Kane showed he could score goals in the Premier league.

The problem is a manager, especially with our hire and fire culture, focuses on short term results, if that means we don't develop the talent we should its the club's problem not his. He doesn't worry about the long term because for him there probably is no long term. Which is why I will worry until I see exactly how Pochettino is going to operate. F

or me a club like ours can't succeed unless we turn the prospects we are now developing into the finished product, we can't buy a successful squad we have to build it. That takes a long term view, unfortunately we have a short term culture.

Why does sherwood deserve credit? How do we know what he actually did in the youth setup? Chris Ramsey was part of the youth setup long before sherwood came on the scene, maybe he should take more credit. Sherwoods talent spotting leaves a lot to be desired. As reports have stated, he turned diwn sterling and suarez!!!

The academy will benefit having Pocho as head coach. Pocho will look at the academy as a rich source of untapped talent and will look to improve the kids to help the squad. Why spend millions on players when you have home grown talent at your disposal. IMO this is Pocho and Levy's thinking for now and the future. Levy has seen what Pocho has done with the kids at Southampton. Things are looking up at Spurs. COYS!

jod. Good article and I agree with your sentiments. I've read a lot of people saying that Nabil should be loaned out. Kane too. Why do that when both showed good promise the minute they were promoted to the first team? I'm almost certain that if we'd bought them both for a few million each and they played as they did, they would have been more appreciated. Kane looked confident, worked hard and took most of his chances very well. Bentaleb has looked more assured in the Wold Cup than Paulinho, Dembele and all. I think they could be suffering from their association with Sherwood bringing them on. Forget him and focus on them. He's gone and they remain... I would love to see those two in particular, feature a lot more next season... I also hope that Pochettino can give a few more a chance to progress and develop in the first team. I myself find it far more satisfying watching young talent come up from within THFC than, when spending a fortune on an outsider. One that may be won't have the same desire and loyalty as a younger talent brought through the academy or, as with Bale, a young player with potential to shine and up their game in the PL. Not on loan with QPR or Norwich etc., but with Spurs........ Yid Army!

Bentaleb is not rated by many Spurs fans, He was the target for moans and complaints "not ready" "not good enough" when introduced to the side last season. Forcing Sherwood to drop him. But if not played at this level how can h develop further!Harry Kane gets a similar encouragement. Why!

Ramsey headed the youth academy, not Sherwood. Poch has brought in his team and we are sourcing more underage players as we speak. Some will play for us if good enough, but we can't rely on kids to fulfil our destiny! We do spend big and we have bought great talent. We have a great squad. Mismanaged to date, and I believe poch will have them playing closer to their full potential in their natural positions. Bentaleb needs a loan. He is not the best player we have for his position. He has potential but you can't do what Tim did in big games and sacrifice the likes of sandro and capoue for a youngster with potential. Selective selection or a loan for him IMO! Mcevoy is the lad we need to see this season, in early cup games or subbed on when we are winning

Prospects fall into a few categories. Some need playing experience. These are the ones who need to be loaned out if they are not going to play each week. This often applies to young defenders, who really just need to learn from mistakes when playing frequently. Other prospects you need to find out whether they can cut it or not. These guys could benefit from a premiership loan, or could benefit greatly from some EPL playing time. Tom Carroll is this. We really need to give him a start or two. Take him off at half time if need be. Then perhaps an EPL loan may be moe possible once everyone sees him. Other prospects are in a congested area of the field. Bentaleb has this problem. He has to fight for his place alongside seasoned EPL and international players. It is going to be difficult to accomodate him, and for that reason a loan may make sense - but that is only if we do not lose a couple of surplus CM options. The other option is to make him a permanent choice for cup games. But is that enough? I think loans are useful, but sometimes it tells you nothing - for example with Kane. He had a better record for us in EPL than on loan in the 3rd tier. Perhaps some of that experience is rubbing off now, but ultimately you cannot tell how good a player is until you play him in the first team alongside the regulars. Easier said than done. Hopefully this season coming we play more to potential, and have a few games that we "walk", and in those, a couple of young'uns can be brought on.

a.k.a.james1spurs - yes, that is right. Bentaleb came in, and did initially well. But when the honeymoon period ended, we realised that Bentaleb was a fixture and Sandro was not even being considered for selection. It is a bit like that wierd scenario years back where England were selecting John Barnes who was well past his best, and there were boos. It wasn't Barnes' fault, it was his persistent selection. In this case, Bentaleb stopped being effective, and still being picked. So people moaned. Overall, Bentaleb did really well for us in tricky circumstances - change of manager mid-season, hammerings, no holding midfielders, 4-4-2 etc...

The ideal situation would be if our "partnership" with real was infact a partnership. Be great to send a few over there to play b team or even a few a team games. But it's not, so we have Swindon, qpr, and now more so hull to loan them too. Hull is a good team to loan players to. I do think nabil will be a good player. How good I don't know. I haven't seen much great play from him at spurs. But last season very few played to their best. For Algeria I have seen a bit more freedom than he was allowed at spurs, but still a bit cagey and the safe ball option being used. But it is Algeria after all. No stars there, just players playing with heart. A good trait and one I hope to see in nabil in a spurs shirt in the future. For now, try get him a loan to hull or palace. Keep him away from Tim if he ever gets another job though. He will again misuse him to help prove his own worth.

As MAN ON mentiones too many fans tarred Bentalab with the Sherwood brush. He always looked composed when I saw him play, the only real negative (if it is one) would be he is a little lightweight although I would say that is not so important if your skill/talent outweighs it. He is young, hungry and has an abundance of ability.
Kane did show he has improved although I not convinced he's ever going to become a 20+ goal a season player.
I'd llike to see Pritchard feature this season too, I think he has something about him.

Bit off topic, apologies. I have been mulling over the Suarez issue this morning. I can see the bale sale scenario panning out at Liverpool. It is now likely Suarez will be banned or sold. Many new potential signings at pool will be buying into CL football and playing with the cannibal. If he leaves, I can see a lot of rebuilding going on and a lot of peed off players at pool? Can they survive a season like we had in that respect? Albeit with a better coach in place?

Suarez missed 19 or more matches for Liverpool, within a couple of seasons, through suspension... Scored a hell of a lot of goals but also could be, in a big way, responsible for Liverpool not quite making the PL title theirs. It's all ifs and buts, apart from the obvious....

No jod, he is not versatile. He was played on so many positions in the hope he clicked and Tim hit the jackpot. I seem to remember him having a dire game as an AM. More a DM or box to boxer IMO. But needs to shake the short safe pass out of the majority of his play and start looking to build attacks from his position. It will come with experience I am sure, and proper coaching. Capoue does this already to a high standard and should be first pick for this position alongside the beast. Bentaleb would really benefit from some time away to gain this experience playing regularly. Tim putting full responsibility on him, and then dropping him must have shattered his confidence too. Hopefully the WC has picked him back up again.

There you go, in the end Suarez could set Liverpool back to where they were without him. Was it worth all the money and risk, if it pans out that way? Equally, If he does leave Liverpool, it could also have a positive effect, as may be he was relied upon too heavily, only to ultimately let them down. I'd rather have Bentaleb and Kane at Spurs than a genius with cannibalistic and racist tendencies.

Dublin Hotspur - From your comments you seem to favour playing two DMs, no idea what Pochettino will actually do. I've seen Bentalab playing cautiously too, the only problem was so was everyone else in the side. I don't think anyone would expect a nineteen year old to be providing the leadership in the team, thats what experience is supposed to be for. Judging from his performances in Brazil I think its safe to say his confidence is fine.

Hope you're right regarding his confidence jod, especially back at spurs and possibly not being first pick. Nice one jod. I have to agree with everything you said. I recently saw a comment that Bentaleb should be loaned out next season. What’s the point of that? He was played by TS (to his credit) and given a good run in the first team (which seemed to break from the culture of impatience we are driven by) and he performed well. He needs to play for Spurs and learn what is required when he wears the shirt; he doesn’t need to learn how some mediocre Championship team play. He now has some experience in the EPL and needs to continue to progress at THFC. He also has WC experience now which can only enhance his confidence and belief in himself. Same with Kane. Both of them have been given the opportunity to play for the first team. To loan them now would be a backward step. Use them or lose them! If they do not maintain their progress they will disappear in any case.

Now hold on here, Bentaleb is a very promising youth player. He got his break last season under Sherwood and he showed that he could cut the mustard. He then was used to cover the midfield while, Sandro, Capoue and Paulinho were unavailable, he got a decent run in the team, when the more experienced players became available he started to be used from the bench and then the bench filled up with more experienced players his chances became more limited again. To be honest thats what you want to see from your youth players that they are good enough to come in do a job for the team and keep the squad ticking over. If they show enough ability and potential then it gives the club more freedom in the pitch if we should have a walk out player or a monster bid comes in for Dembele or Paulinho!

I can see a bigger role for him at the club next season but I certainly don't see a loan move beign beneficial to him. Send him to a club where he gets first team action all season and suddenly he loves it there and wants a permanent move???? No with Paulinho being so sketchy and sandro so injury prone Bentaleb is the ideal solution.
As regards Sherwood obviously he can be credited with no good work at the club and anything that even remotely represents an achievement or success has to be as a result of someone elses work. the question you have to ask is would Bentaleb have gotten the same chance if AVB had seen out the season? But then whats the point of that lne of thinking as we have a new manager now who one of his strong points (according to Cider's statements from ex-players) is developing younger players and improving the players who play for him. On this basis Bentaleb needs to be kept at the club as does Kane who showed last season that he can have an impact for us and he actually does know where the back of the net is.

I am very very excited about Nabil Bentalab. I see a brave and intelligent player. Who with games will be the defensive fulcrum that all good sides need. Patience is relative...do we really want to use our first team as a training ground for players that may or may not be up to scratch? would we be happy being say a Villa...who sold their best players and just gave their youngsters a go?...Kane has done well on loans and in cameos and deserves a few more to see if he can sustain at our level but to rely on him or have him as a key player would be madness (see Rose last year)...I'm not sure where all the love for Bentaleb is coming from? he looks a decent player nothing more so far. He faded (as young players can) after his first few games and became a safety first sideways player....nothing wrong with that but we had 6 players that could already do that and had more to offer in other areas! IMO a loan is absolutely the best thing for him and us...we get to see if he can cut it in the PL and he gets regular game time...the alternative is that we sit or sell a guy who has already proven themselves at the highest level to play Bentaleb and hope that he progresses rapidly, worse is that he carries on playing like JJ and costs the team points and places...

man on- disagree...by learning his trade with us you are prepared to gamble on him at the expense of results and also lose a player that has shown that they deliver consistently at a high level (pick any of Dembele, Pauli, Sandro or capoue) Livermore is at Hull not because we loaned him to them (would be nice if it worked that way as Townsend would be with 10 other clubs) but because he was considered not to be as good as what we had, surplus to requirements and importantly a salable asset....if we needed a player like him he could have come back to the 1st team this season...indeed if you gave him a call and offered him the chance of first team footy for us or Hull I'm pretty sure he would have run back...

We complain all too often that we didn't snap up young potential from other teams when they were relatively cheap and cheerful, whilst watching their stock rise elsewhere but, are not prepared to gamble on our own. Hindsight is one thing but foresight is based on risk and potential. We can't ever be sure, even if a player has already proved themselves elsewhere.
