Big Break!

Big Break!

I just took a quick look at the Tottenham squad on the official website and one or two names made me think about their and others futures and potential to develop under the new regime.

Names of players such as Benteleb and Carroll are sure to be high on Pochettino`s list of possible players to add to the squad, but what of others that seemed to be forgotten in recent times, but find themselves amongst the 30 names of players in the Spurs first team squad.

I noticed that Ryan Mason is named along with Iago Falque. But there is no place for Jon Obika or Alex Pitchard, who remain as development squad names. Just a case of a lack of space or an indication of who is wanted or at least to be given a chance or who already know they don`t have a future at the club.

We have heard that Obika is wanted by the likes of Doncaster and Barnsley, whilst Pritchard, a player that made his league debut in the last Prem game of last season, has been talked about for some time as a target for Leicester and others, either on loan or in a permanent deal. Perhaps the club already know their futures and for the short term at least (in the case of Pritchard) it isn`t at WHL.

So what of Mason and Falque? Is Mason a current poor mans version of Adam Lallana, a player that works anywhere behind the striker, is technically excellent, has an eye for goal and has genuinely good vision and creativity? Based on what they have seen, regardless of his very average injury hit loans, is he a player to write off or one where they see genuine potential?

What of Falque? A player that showed first team potential and offers a more technical ability from wide positions than for example, Lennon or Townsend. Maybe he is seen as more of a like for like player to cover Erik Lamela for example and one who might thrive under Poch and his new way of playing?

I have just looked at four players, based on age similarity and the squad on the official site, but clearly there will be others that Poch and his team will already have decided they like or dislike the look of and the players will be treated accordingly.

We already know that Grant Ward and Grant Hall are on loans, Kevin Stewart and a few others have been made available or already officially or un-officially let go, but what of the likes of Milos Veljkovic, Ryan Fredericks, Shaq Coulthirst, Ruben Lameiras, Cristiam Ceballas and others that may or may not be seen as players to push forward. What are your thoughts?..

Good question, Ox. I find it impossible to comment on the youngsters (unless they’ve featured in the first team) because I don’t see enough of them to have an informed opinion. It would be interesting to hear comments from supporters who have seen these players in action.

I used to go to the Swindon Games and watch the lads. (My missus worked there so It would be rude to go home and have to return to collect her after the game so i'd hang around)

Pritch to me has an incredible amount of talent and one that we will see in the future, whether it's this season who knows. Personally i'd like to see what Poch can do with him and him get some game time for us. Pritch, and Mason deserve to stay at WHL and mix it with the big boys. Pritch has a sensible head on his shoulders and when he had the ball would look up, decide where to pass the ball and put it damn near to where it should be. (Almost "Hoddle-esque") I believe he'll stay at WHL and get a few cup games, few sub appearances and give a bit of cover, by the end of this season if he hasn't started more than 5 then he's obviously not in Pch's plans and he'll be moved on for a few quid or sent out to the likes of Norwich for a season further. i prefer to see him make it as he has (something we have heard a lot about these past few weeks) a low centre of gravity. Potentially he's going to be our very own Maradonna/Hoddle love child prodigy!

I'd be very surprised if we sold Pritchard. Not too long ago Inglethorpe was trying to take him to Liverpool with him, the likes of Barcelona were also making enquiries. 6 goals with 10 assists for Swindon in the league is not too shabby.

However, here's the thing, yet again once more we arrive at the crux of the problem. Gametime and is he ready?. Pritchard plays as an AM, is 21. We already have numerous players who play this position, have done so for their countries. Whilst I understand that Holtby was just too cheap for Levy to say no, we now have so many midfielders that blooding new emerging talent has become a whole lot harder. We need to allow a few spaces along the way for the likes of the emerging talent to get gametime. Maybe not sign a plethora in the same position, but give some of this youth a chance, was it really sensible to sign Holtby, loan him out and watch Pritchard fall further down the pecking order. Just like Bentaleb, play a few here and there more often, cups and early Europa maybe, if they are good enough, they'll be fine, don't go overboard with this wrapping in cotton wool idea, the thought that you could ruin their career. Continually shipping players round the country on loan season on season and still selling at the end is not beneficial to development either.

Let's start playing a few a little more often, they'll get to know if they have a future at Spurs, we'll know whether we have the talent emerging at the club as opposed to writing another cheque to steal a place from under their feet.

It depends on the date of births of the players. Last years free picks that would now need to be named in the squad are Eriksen, Lamela, Fredericks, Fryers, Carroll, Ceballos and Lancaster. The ones that were already 21 or over are Hall, Mason, Falque, Khumalo and the free picks are Archer, Bentaleb, Veljkavic,Pritchard, Kane etc. In my opinion, Poch will keep the free picks until January because of the Europa League and Capital One cups. He will have some tough choices with the rest though because he can only name 25 and he has a bloated squad. That gives Veljkavic, Bentaleb, Pritchard and Kane a huge advantage over Kuumalo, Carroll, Falque and Obika. Ultimately, Poch will need to thin the squad quite considerably if he wants new signings.

By the way, my assumption is that anyone born after 1st January 1993 counts as a free-pick and the rest are senior pro's. That means Pritchard is a free-pick but Ceballos is not.

Caroll high up on the list??!!! Did you not follow his latest loan away.... Overrated IMHO. I'd let him go for 5mil.. In fact, apart from Bentelab & perhaps Kane I'd be dissapointed to see many more of the youngsters near our first team! I get the romance of it all, but you're dreaming if you think we have the next Ledley King in out ranks! Until we do, let's buy the quality potential. Like we did for Bale & Lennon. Davies from swansea a good start!

Another point that kind of re-iterates my belief that we should introduce one or two of the youth a bit more often. Today, and for the last few days, we have been linked with Ben Davies, he only turned 21 in April, and has already a minimum of a season prem football under his belt.

Many are excited and delighted by the prospect of Davies joining, have to admit, I'm happy, he is a steady player and hopefully can excel over the years. Here's my point, he was playing in the Prem aged 19 same as Bentaleb, he has proved he can handle it. We need to start putting a few younger ones out there and see if they can handle it. I know it's hard keeping everybody happy, Taylor the LB at Swansea is now not happy his place is taken by Davies, but unless we start playing some of the younger ones, we might just let a great slip through our fingers, and or spend money we could reinvest elsewhere.

Spurs50...I've said numerous times that Fryers future is at CB. A position he has openly stated he prefers and sees himself, and a position he was afforded when playing the few cameos at United. Lose both Kaboul and Daws, reinvest in Schar or Savic and have Fryers as an option also.

Bit off topic, but I haven't seen much of Ben Davis as I didn't spend too much time streaming swansea games last season! what is he like? I can't find anything on scouting sites or youtube of any value, and his stats look fairly similar to Rose! If they've reached 21 and they've played more matches elsewhere than at Spurs then take the plunge and promote them within the club. If they're not showing any sign of being good enough then sell them. We have to gamble occasionally and see if any of these guys fit the bill.

And if he's one of our youth players he must be utter crap. Man On - I'm not sure! I'm excited by Poch, never wanted Sherwood.. It depends on this Summers activities! Some clearly need to go and we definitely need a few faces in (pace important), if we get this right who knows.. Dawson, churches, Siggy and Soldado gone from 1st team would be a good step, 2 quality centre backs, left back and a striker in would be a real positive! Lots of players deserve this season though to prove their worth (Chadli, Paulihno, Rose, Holtby). Most of the 21yr old kids to go on loan in prem in a make or break season... I'll know more about our chances at the start of August :)

With game time both Betaleb and Kane showed they are more then capable of holding their own in our squad and as much as we hated Sherwood neither of them would have gotten thoses chances under AVB or Harry. Hopefully par tof Pochettinos mandate is to promote from withint eh clubs ranks. Sell on Holtby and Siggy and give their game time to our own future superstars.

Hopefully to break through this season would be Ceballos as was the most gifted from those mentioned. Will all depend on how MP sees our youth's current ability and potential advancement in the cups. If not will be loans again for most of them. Ben Davies would be a step up for us at LB over DR as at least he can defend.

Slums, I'm not knocking all the kids, I'm saying we're pushing champions league (or should be).. Let the lesser prem teams blood out youngsters so we can see if they cut it! Signing seven or eight players isn't an option this window, it failed miserably last season and it will fail again this season. we need to address the areas that need fixing. LW is a priority, Davies would solve LB, Rose then as his understudy? Dawson is the ideal four choice CB and I would keep him ahead of the failing Kaboul. I have very little faith in Chiriches but he gets a pass because of the shambolic season we had affected nearly every player in the squad. Use Fryers to replace Kaboom. and thats your lot, two signings, maybe a striker if Bony can be gotten for reasonable money, but we do need a wrecking ball type striker who can plough a lone furrow up top!

Luvwhites the best place for them to learn is from our coach and our first team squad. we should have been blooding one or two players into the squad over the last four to five years not doing this has caused a huge back log of youth players who we just don't know enough about. Prem teams are limited to the number of loanees they can sign and usually they try and get proven players to shore up their teams as they can't afford to actually buy these players - look how Kane got on at Norwich!

If we are to utilise Pochettinos main selling point, of being a very good coach at bringing on the young, talented players with the Saints, then we need him and his staff to get on with it at Spurs. I'm with Slurms on this. The best place for them is at Spurs and not running around a bit or, up and down the touchline, for Harry and the like.

There were many supporters on here complaining about the amount of game time Bentaleb got last season. If that is the thinking, how on earth are we ever going to give young players with potential the time they need to develop. In retrospect TS made a pretty gutsy call on that one. He may not make it but, if he doesn’t, we won’t be left thinking about what might have been. If the supporters demand or expect CL football after next season we will never develop our youngsters ... or the team.

Dublin...The only way I can describe Davies is as steady. There have been plenty of comparison stats of late including Prem LBs. Some show Davies to have actually outshone Shaw, some have put Rose ahead of Shaw.

The latest one I read had Davies beating Rose in the attacking side of things, but winning less defensive tackles. However, Davies played something like 14 games more and only made 1 defensive mistake in 36 games, Rose made 3 in 22.

Rose will offer more pace wise, Davies will be the better passer. I like Davies, but he really is all about potential, we are not signing the finished article here. Rose might actually cope better this season if we played a true LW ahead who is willing and able to track back as opposed to Rose having to marshall the whole left side.

Yes Rose needs to be better in his decision making, but maybe I have been a little harsh in hindsight regarding his jogging back and poor crossing. I expect the lads legs were like jelly continually having to run the whole of the Left side. Maybe as stated before, he should pick his forays forward more carefully.

In conclusion, I'd be happy with Davies as a LB addition, but still remain somewhat disappointed that we have not signed a finished article, maybe that's just me and my Rodriguez love in LOL!. However, that said, Liverpool, City and Atletico to name a few have all been linked with an interest previously, so one would think the lad has something.

While we expressed our disgust at Saurez biting incident, I reckon it's about time we did the same about diving - his man has been doing it for so long he thinks it's ok, even to the point of 'admitting' to it in public without one degree of shame. It's a disgrace.

I agree with the thoughts that we are holding on the 'promising' youngsters for far too long. The amount of investment delved into the youth development has not reaped the returns over the years. I think it's time to release those 'youngsters' who are passed their 'youth' development at the club and yet still waiting for their 'breakthrough'. MRP is meant to be good at youth development but he isn't a miracle worker...he's still has the mere job of developing the first team... Strongly believe that youth continue to develop with a strong and stable structure at the club and that includes a strong first team - no matter at what level.

I am afraid it will be a balancing act. At the end of the day, Pochettino would want a squad that is able to a) at least maintain our respectable position in the PL and b) allow the development of the youth....AND development of the SENIOR individuals. The fans and the board will need a large dose of patience if several youth are to be introduced from the outset. Once our jigsaw is complete, I would like to see a greater PART TIME use of the youngsters. Throw them at the deep end at your peril. I have always been an advocate of their introduction as per Sir Alex Ferguson, i.e., cameo introductions to more game time. Until our transfer activity is concluded, it'd be difficult to predict whom or how many of the youth can be afforded the opportunity. All the talk of Pochettino as a 'developing from within' manager, THFC is a different proposition to Southampton. So will wait and see the comings and goings to form an image of the future. COYS!

Geof, to aspire to the highest level will only inspire those who strive for the best for the club; anything else is a repeat of the past of the 80s, 90s and 00s. Not willing to lower the aspirations of the club - of course the club need to lower the prices they charge if they or us change what we aspire to do. Mention Bentaleb's game time - can you imagine what the impact would have been if that was managed better and with meritocracy in mind ? I dont think being short sighted will help any of us IMO.

Great article, some good points raised. It is difficult to know who will succeed at First team level. Lallana is now 26 years old and only recently emerged as a class player. (thanks to Pochettino?) Could be the year Tom Carroll breaks through, if he has toughened up after last season. But any player stepping up a grade, Bentaleb or even Ledley King when he first played in the first team can appear shaky and unsure until 4-6 games played. I think if I remember correctly seeing Ledley against Man Utd in an early game when he looked lost! So SUPPORT for young players in the their first few games in the Premier League can help make them if they have the character and attitude to persevere

Cider, I fear you are in the positivity mood of holidays ... Highgate...Whilst I understand Rose is a couple of years further down the road than Davies, a couple of points still need to be remembered. Bearing in mind this in conjunction with us maybe signing Davies.

Rose was actually more successful than Davies regarding defending last season, Davies whilst being better in attack only contributed one prem assist and has a measly 19% crossing accuracy. Davies' strength is holding onto possession.

As much as I believe Rose is not of the standard required, It would be wrong to ignore the fact that he was hung out to dry for vast periods last season, I have stated that he should have maybe considered his forays forward last season, but to add balance could it not be argued that he could have fared a whole lot better with a LW willing to track back and cover space left?. I think this may have had something to do with crosses at times and his apparent jogging back as opposed to sprinting, the lad was fecked running the whole Left side. I'd still like to see what he could do with a true Left sided player ahead who is able to work the Left side in unison with Rose, not saying we don't need a LB, but would equally like Rose to be given a fair crack in a proper set up. As for his marauding runs forward, could it be he was just following instructions, Walker has Lennon to help, Rose has??.

A little side thought, Davies is mooted at circa £8 million, a value many, myself included have felt is probably half of what he should cost. 21, prem experience scope for good improvement...Did we sell Caulker to cheaply on that basis?.

Bentaleb looks mature beyond his years. Playing in the WC and doing a great job for his country speaks volumes but you have to be careful and pick the youngsters at the right time. You want them to play when they're full of confidence and in a game where the result is not as important as the PL (cup game) and in a less hostile environment. This is why Pocho and his backroom staff earn their crust and by his track record with the kids at Southampton; he seems to get it right more often than not. COYS!

Cider, as you know I dont hold too much on statistics, it hides a lot of valuable aspects of a player: attitude, capacity to learn, propensity to take regard to play... and so on... Cider, Rose may have been "hung out to dry" when foraging upfield... how many ended with a product... was he hung out to dry when crossing, shooting, tackling, scowling at team-mates, show of temper to anyone around him, showing no awareness of those around him, shrugging shoulders when goals conceded because of his absence ? Highgate...Wires crossed maybe? ;-) You may have read that I do not believe Rose is of the standard required, his petulance duly noted and commented on previously also. I am trying to do nothing more than explain maybe why some areas of Rose's game were sub standard, they might not be the cause, but my case in point is that they might just be. Without seeing the other side of the coin, namely a LW who is prepared to work in tandem with Rose how will we know?. We can't. He supposedly was doing alright at Sunderland when he had a player ahead to work with, top 4?, I doubt it, but I still think only fair to see what he can do in the right set up.

I can assure anybody, any player regardless of how fit or fast they are cannot be expected to run the whole Left side of a pitch from back to front without it having a detrimental effect on their performance, no way, of course pace and tracking back will drop off, as will crossing effectiveness, legs become jelly like and once slowed, lead like. All I am stating is this too needs to be factored in when writing off Rose.

When a player can't decide for himself whether to concentrate on his main job or not it's a worry; remember Cider, some of the foraging were carried in the first few minutes in a games - legs ought not to turn to jelly by then, should they? We can't afford to have a liability such as Rose for another season. Success for Sunderland should not be a feature in the analysis of Rose's skills.

Have Spurs dropped their interest in Rodriguez, Swiss international ?

I don't see the point of looking to the kids until Senior players are sold. Carroll and Bentaleb are great examples. I like both and believe both are PL quality. They both need to be playing week in and week out. But does either get in regularly ahead of Dembele, Paulinho, Holtby, Sandro, Capoue, Eriksen in the middle? That's without even contemplating players like Chadli, Lamela and Sigurdsson who all have the ability to play in behond a striker. I don't see it as things currently stand. Now if Sigurdsson, Holtby and Capoue or Sandro or Dembele are sold, we may be talking. For now, at most positions, there are just too many bodies that deserve the spots. Pritchard and Fredericks have more chance, but they too have a number of players ahead of them.

Neither the Senior players nor the kids can sit on the bench. Kids can be loaned out. If they are to play regularly, players ahead of them must be moved on. Either way is good so long as it's what Pochettino wants. Getting the squad size down is one of the new struggles Pochettino will face as he learns his job. For good or bad, we are where we are because of the 30 plus senior players in the squad. If we don't qualify for the group stages of Europa, that number will need to get down to about 18. To include kids in the regular players lowers that number further. Does anyone else see the problem? Our numbers and place in the CL mix means that kids are less likely to play and to take up spaces in squad numbers. Just reality. COYS

Highgate...I'd suggest Rodriguez would cost circa £15 million with many suitors. Can't see Levy paying that, especially with a sniff of Davies at £8 million. Shame because I think he would bring so much to the team, great defender and crosses the strikers would die for. As for Rose, correct, all his weaknesses would not disappear as a result of having a LW, but maybe not so many weaknesses and therefore not so much highlighting of his shortcomings. I'm not making excuses, his attitude at times stunk, same with tracking back, if he can't get back, don't get forward, but he is part of the problem, not exclusively the problem. Soldado is proven, not in the prem, but proven. He struggled also this season, but many correctly called it, stating he was not serviced and aided correctly, fair question, was Rose helped as much as he could have been in his breakthrough season at Spurs?.

Rose had as many crosses as Walker until he got injured and made fewer defensive blunders that led to goals. Neither were getting assists, nor were their crosses anywhere near the intended targets. I just have a huge problem hanging one out to dry when the one on the other side who normally benefits from Lennon's cover, is far more a liability and no more a threat.

That said, Davies (who played far more than Rose but got the same number of goals and assists) is a far better defensive player and is 3 years younger. There is no way Rose starts ahead of him which means Rose will surely go. Which brongs me to my next question, Who do we pick on next? COYS

onemoreseason, If Benteke was not injured I would have preferred to go for him but like you said would be good to know when he is likely to be back. I agree about Bony and Lukaku.

Get a right back and push Walker to improve his game or turn him into a marauding winger. COYS!

Peterballb, this is a forum where we are meant to share thoughts ... I doubt many players or reps from the club read it .... surely you are not suggesting that we don't give our thoughts on here ? I don't think this dialogue constitutes picking on.... We are just 120 supporters / fans of the club (that no. is negotiable as some seem to have multiple aliases!!!) with no influence on the club through this...

Got to love Levy.

Knowing what we now know, that's right, Suarez likes a munch on opponents, Under Armour seems a very astute move from Levy. Won't bite through that!.
