Is Jan the Man for Barca?

It appears that Jan Vertonghen is the latest and not unexpected name to be linked with a WHL departure.

In reality it is hardly a surprise that Vert is wanted elsewhere, as he is clearly a good mix of defender and footballer, ideal for the demands of todays game. You could also see a logic in him attracting interest from a club like Barca, even if his performance and attitude didn`t seem quite to standard last season.

Speaking of possible interest, his agent Mustapha Nakhli said: 'Several teams are interested in Jan, I cannot confirm or deny whether Barcelona are one of them. 'Tottenham is not a small club. It's too soon to give them an answer. Several clubs have registered their interest in Jan. We'll see."
Of course that means nothing at this time and we all know that agents see their roles as getting the best deal for their client, whether they like it or not.. What we don`t know is what the player himself wants and also whether Barca are truly looking at him as their prime target.

Should this actually develop, what would our valuation of Vertonghen be and is there also a potential that we might be able to do a deal with one of their emerging players that might interest Pochettino?

In my opinion, he's not good enough for Barca.
muttley
Also, based on supply and demand Jan is probably worth over £30m. Every top club in the Prem and several other clubs like Barca want centre halves so they will have to pay over the odds. There simply isn't the supply of great centre halves to choose from at the moment and a lot of clubs looking.
muttley
you are right muttley
tarkan mardinCOYS
He has the ability but is prone to switching off. Barca may risk him but I'm sure they have defenders as good as; if not better. He needs to get his head down and deliver the goods for us in the new season. COYS!
a.k.a.james1spurs
Based on last season: It's goodbye Jan. Based on the season before: Please don't go. No doubt there'll be a lengthy couple of posts telling us his life story and how he's such a great talent and future captain. Blah blah. Who cares? He either wakes up and proves he's a winner or he can go and mope about elsewhere.
MAN ON!
Hot on the heels of the ITKs and rag top football sources getting the Lloris transfer dead wrong we now have the next player they would like to see leave The Lane?
Slurms McKenzie
if the choice is between him or matt hummels for barca than im sorry its hummels all the time
tarkan mardinCOYS
Based on his dreadful performances last season Barca probably think they can get him on the cheap. If they pay the right money we should get rid of him, he is clearly not interested in putting in 100% effort for this club and £25-30m would be a good price. Our defense was better last season when he wasn't in it.
StripiestPilot
Jan actually stated during the World Cup that he was committed to Spurs, and that MP had called him after his appointment and that Jan was looking forward to playing under him. Nothing is ever sure in life but that is a fairly recent and clear statement of intent. He has said in the Belgian press that he knows last year was not the best, and that he knows he can play at a higher level.
BelgianSpur
BelgianSpur. I hope he meant it.
MAN ON!
I also think that playing alongside Dawson, who I felt was dreadful last year, made it more difficult for Jan. He had thge odd lapse in concentration but I do think that his "sulking" was largely overblown by the typically excessive British press.
BelgianSpur
vertonghens agent said"sevral clubs are interested in jan.i cannot confirm or deny if one of them is barca.Tottenham is not a small club.its too soon to give them an answer.we will see."
tarkan mardinCOYS
BelgianSpur... I don't take any notice of the press. I saw the attitude quite clearly, close up at WHL, other grounds and on TV for myself.
MAN ON!
As far as being good enough for Barca, I certainly think he is. On his day, he is a top 5 CB. Harry Redknapp said last year that Man City's weakest link was that they had no one of value to partner Kompany and that if he was running the team, he would put in a 40 million bid for Vertonghen. Are ther better defenders out there? Probably, but not many. Is Hummels better? Maybe, but look at his injury record. Better to spend 40 million on Hummels and see him miss 40% of the season every year, or Vertonghen and see him start 85% of the games? Not to mention the versatility (he helps out a left back and is actually not half bad there).
BelgianSpur
belgian-vertonghen is over rated.his also a slow coach
tarkan mardinCOYS
IMO, you cannot blame any other player for another players faults. Why make excuses for him? If it's down to the other defenders being so bad then why was Lloris so good?
MAN ON!
To be fair, and I don't want to defend Vertonghen at all costs (although I am biased), wouldn't you have the ump when your team is leaking goals at the back like crazy, and you are doing your best to cover for Dawson's lack of pace and Rose's mistakes? Because he's got the talent, people expect him to perform miracles and do 3 defenders' job. Both him and Lloris looked less than pleased with the way certain games went. Should they throw teammates under the bus? Probably not. But I can't fault them for being upset at the situation and showing it. Sherwood should have been fuming as well.
BelgianSpur
Belgian- michael dawson was much better than this guy last season.i know you want to support your fellow countryman but dont talk nonsense
tarkan mardinCOYS
I mean, why not blame him for the others mistakes? They are and will all be responsible for themselves and the team as a unit. They sink or swim, as a team.
MAN ON!
Tarkan- anyone can make a statement to say this or that player is overrated. But that's personal opinion isn't it? Vertonghen was statistically the 6th best defender at the World Cup, and 11th overall. Those are facts, based on various metrics collected by FIFA (passes completed, interceptions, goals,...). Overrated compared to who?
BelgianSpur
Because he had to make more saves MAN ON! ;) COYS!
a.k.a.james1spurs
you probably think dembele is great too
tarkan mardinCOYS
I watched Verts closely in the World Cup and he does not encourage his fellow team mates. If a pass to him goes ashtray he shrugs his shoulders and moans at the other player. If one of his passes goes wayward he still gives his team mate a look as if to say, why were you not where I placed the ball? This is an attitude problem that has nothing to do with the players around him.
MAN ON!
No Dembele was *****e and hasn't lived up to expectations, neither has Chadli so far. I just don't see Barca making any inquiries about Dawson, that's all. On the other hand, Hull are. You are definitely right when saying that Vertonghen had a crap season. I'm not disputing that one bit. But one player started a World Cup quarter-final, the other stayed at home to watch the tournament. Can you really make a case for Dawson being a superior defender?
BelgianSpur
I agree with the first comment.
Geofspurs
this article is about vertonghen but no doubt michael dawson will get mentioned more than jan.
tarkan mardinCOYS
MAN ON!- Agree that his attitude could/should be better, and moaning never helps the team. But on that basis, we've seen our fair share of players at WHL with attitude problems who still turned out to be productive players (Adebayor, Berbatov, Robbie Keane to name a few).
BelgianSpur
Hahaha Dawson's nuts still clinging on like a couple of dingleberries. Maybe if Jan had a stupid smile on his face things would be different. Instead his perceived "sulking" is his annoyance at the shocking team performance and the fact the two players left and right of him were so poor. It's no surprise that Jan is linked with Barca and the likes and that Dawson is linked with Hull etc. the gulf in class is beyond measure in each and every department. It's sad some people wish the club to move backwards by holding onto below average "nice guys"...
Mix26
Belgian ... Quoting 'Arry'! We could spend a lifetime doing that!
Geofspurs
MAN ... your last comment is very true.
Geofspurs
Apparently He was ranked in the top ten defenders at the world cup? scoring, whilst not his top priority, also got him exposure, and he may be suited to a slower passing style in Spain. depending on what they offer us, should we take it? but more importantly, what is our back four line up for next season, ideally? Walker albeit injured for part of the season hardly came on leaps and bounds, Younes is quality but lacks consistency, i'd like to see Davies turn up as LB, but who else? we do need to shed some dead wood, Capoue, Rose, BAE, Lennon, Dembele can all go. as for future Captain, I'd make Sandro captain if Daws leaves us.
falmouthyid
Vidic, Roy Keane, John Terry, Ferdinand, to name a few of players that were no nonsense players who never played with "smiles" on thier faces. They were hard and unforgiving.
Mix26
BelgianSpur. I don't dislike Jan and I believe him to be a talented player. I lost some faith and patience with him and many others last season and I'll not make excuses on their behalf. Players making mistakes is all part of the game and even the very best are not always the best. I just want each and every one of them to play like winners, every match. I think it's all about confidence and hopefully it will be restored and in place for next season, whoever is in the team/squad.
MAN ON!
Mix26 - my point exactly. Let's sell Vertonghen and look for a replacement. Great plan. Who are we going to buy, and at what price? As discussed in other posts, we're offering no CL football, and we have a limited wage structure. We can either deal with the attitude problems of a talented footballer who is already at the club and under contract, or take our chances in the transfer market to try to find a replacement who will be expensive and who may or may not work out. I fail to understand the logic of that argument on any level.
BelgianSpur
who believes barca is interested in vertonghen?not me.none of the spanish outlets are leading with this.his not good enough for them,in fact the way his been playing i dont think he is good enough for us .COYS
tarkan mardinCOYS
If the right money comes in (30m) i say sell, there are 2 or 3 CB in england we can get in and wont spend half that, hes performance was shocking and i dont care who was in the team.
spurs50yrs
you speak through a position of strength.
tarkan mardinCOYS
MAN ON! - I can fully agree with your last statement. Everyone needs to fight for the shirt and for the fans. I just dislike the vendetta towards certain players and how fickle some fans can be, without thinking the problem through. Selling a player only creates one more problem. This isn't FIFA or Football Manager. Transfer dealings are tough.
BelgianSpur
Mix26. True but smiling or not is not what it's about.
MAN ON!
BeligianSpurs - FIFA can stick their stats where the sun don't shine. It doesn't work that way for defenders. Defending is an art form that is about reading of the game, positional sense, communication and ultimately the ability to defend your goal. Did Vert's do that well at the WC. Absolutely not. He was completely fallible a few times albeit playing out of position. I bet the stats didn't show how many times he let his marker get goal side of him. I bet they didn't show how may times he left a gaping hole that a player run through. I bet they didn't show where he was directly or indirectly responsible for a clean shot on goal or even a goal itself. Don't get me wrong, I rate the guy and his indifferent season was still way better than Dawson, Rose etc. He wasn't a great defender though either last season or in the WC and I'm a little surprised Barca are in for him. He needs to benchmark himself against guys like Kompany. That's who Barca should be after if they want to emulate the team they had a few years ago. Vertonghen needs to get his head down and prove that he is first and foremost a great defender. We know he can do all the other stuff that gets measured by stats. I think he can be a great defender but he's definitely not there yet.
muttley
spurs50years - name them. 2 or 3 CB's in England who are just as good as Jan Vertonghen, available for a transfer, affordable, and whose club will be willing to sell to a potential PL rival. I can name several who are as good/better, but they're either playing for a bigger club, or will never be sold to a direct rival.
BelgianSpur
and if this place degenerates into a michael dawson bashing i dont want any part of it.you will not get my input in the matter
tarkan mardinCOYS
BelgianSpur. I agree but this article is about Jan. I'm feeling peeved about most of our players. Like I said I will accept mistakes and loses as long as I can see the effort and teamwork of winners. I look forward to a new start and a fresh outlook, come the Hammers match and from there on.
MAN ON!
BelgiumSpur it's absolutely ludicrous to consider selling such a talent that requires the absolute minimum other than to work on his "attitude" apparently. Jan is a winner and from my perspective I can understand his frustration. It amazes me that posters who comment during match threads on how bad DR or MD is playing and how they lack commitment etc and/or how DR hits 1/10 crosses yet they believe our "human" players on the park are in no way effected by this. I would prefer a disappointed player over a player that accepts the avg
Mix26
muttley- stats don't tell the whole story, for sure. And no defender is perfect (and certainly not Kompany at the last WC either, although the guy is pure class). Jan makes mistakes. But somehow, despite our expertise in football, managers are still picking him. He must be doing something right.
BelgianSpur
People will complain about certain players being picked on and then in their next sentence go on to slate another. We need a team of performers and they're all in it together.
MAN ON!
Here here ManOn. We have a coach who should put the heat and passion back into this talented squad for sure. No slow build up like AVB and no complete horse shiet like DS. Attacking high pressing football with desire and heart. Def looking forward to this season!
Mix26
And for the record, I love Michael Dawson and he's been a great servant to the club. I just think that if the club is to move forward from a footballing perspective, the defence should be built around Vertonghen, not Dawson. I still think Dawson has value as a squad player. But surely he cannot be starting for a club with top 4 aspirations.
BelgianSpur
Ox, another thought provoking article... whether Verts is fit for Barca is not for me to think about but I definitely think he is definitely one of the players to rake Spurs onto the next stage. It never ceases to surprise how quickly the Spurs 'fans' jump on the bandwagon led by the anti-Spurs media. It was all how Lloris was playing well fro France to enable him to jump the ship called Spurs... funny how it all went quiet yesterday ... and today it's Jan's turn. Likewise with Jan, all the noise about Jan being substituted in the first game for Belgium but strangely it all quiet when Jan proved to be the valuable player for the rest of the games.

For me, the biggest barrier to Spurs succeeding left on 13th May. NOT one Spurs player had a good season last year - and now we can look forward to a brand new season with a refreshing change of a knowledgeable coach on tow and look forward to a season with hope.
I wonder why the likes of Rose, Dawson, Naughton, Kaboul, Adebayor aren't afforded these speculative stories... no clubs such as Barca are looking at them as a source of improvement. Get the picture ? Slurms, my betting is on Dembele and then Chadli being the next on the 'scrutiny' list...

NOT one Spurs player had a good season last year - and now we can look forward to a brand new season with a refreshing change of a knowledgeable coach and look forward to a season with hope.

It's up to us Spurs fans who claim to be support Spurs, either virtually, make believe or in person, to get behind the squad / club and see us succeed.!!! COYS!!!
Highgatespur
As good as Jan was last year oh yes
spurs50yrs
Point well taken MAN ON. I just feel that some players deserve blame more than others, but that's also quite subjective I suppose. Football remains a team game.
BelgianSpur
Belgian - I get it. I would absolutely pick Vertonghen but it would be with conditions he hasn't had before. He needs to take more responsibility and work harder on his partnerships at the back. Dawson is an absolute mess and I will never defend him. No positional sense, no reading of the game and I'm shocked he's even at Spurs let alone wearing the armband and in the side. Chiriches though is the most intelligent defender we have. He is like Carvalho in that most of the great stuff he does 80% of fans don't notice and that's the way it should be. He reads the game and gets a toe in where most defender have to have a full blooded tackle because his brain is engaged first. Kaboul though needs a leader alongside him to talk to him and keep him focused. We have 3 fantastic centre halves and we need a coach to organise them. Selling any would be counter productive to what we are trying to achieve.
muttley
The only noise linking Verts with Barcelona is coming from his agents mouth. That alone speaks volumes. The Spanish press are notorious for fanning any flames regarding the ins and outs of their 'Big Two', and yet there hasn't been a whiff from the rags. This is an agent attempting to instigate a bidding war when so far there is no tangible evidence of interest from anywhere. That isn't to say he won't have attracted interest, especially after the World Cup, but it's all ifs and buts for the time being. And if the smoke is evidence of fire, and his head and heart are already elsewhere, then we can demand top dollar based on his current contract. If Luke Shaw is worth £30+ million, then we ought to at least ask for that to be matched. As for replacements? I am sick of us offering no aerial threat whatsoever from our set-pieces, or aerial cover from our opponents set-pieces, and so I'd like at least one centre-back who gives this and also puts defending as his priority. I wouldn't cry my eyes out if we brought in Shawcross for example. A centre-back in the mould of Dawson, who puts his head in where it hurts, but who actually gives confidence when the long/high balls are flying in either box. Come on you beautiful Spurs!!!
LilyWhiteHart
a.k.a.james1spurs. That's not actually true. I know what you mean though.
MAN ON!
spurs50yrs not really going out on a limb there are we? ;-). Agree Jan was shocking at times last year, but he remains class overall is my point, and any chance of losing him (to Barca or any other club) should be bad news to any Spurs fan IMO. That's all I wanted to say.
BelgianSpur
I have officially stopped listening to what the media say. They get a slight scent of something and sensationalise it to get hits and sell papers. Jan said a few months ago he needs to think about his future after the WC, hinting that he would be open to a move. Less than Two weeks ago he said that he wanted to be at spurs next season and looks forward to working with MP. That supersedes what he said months ago when we (and he) was in a bad place

If Barca come in and offer 15m then he won’t be sold. If they come and offer 25-30m he will be. It’s that simple. Every single player at THFC is for sale at the right price. All I ask is that unlike every single transfer window before, set a deadline for departures. If Barca do want him (again no evidence whatsoever) say its X amount by next week or don’t bother calling again. AND STICK TO IT

I just hope the wheels start turning with our business, if we do any! Top 4 is looking impossible as it stands. Chelsea have massively improved, Arsenal have just signed Sanchez (so many people do not realise how big that signing is!!!) and are in for Khedira and a boat load of other A listers if you believe the rumours. Liverpool have arguably strengthened although they have lost their best player. Man U will be a different animal this season and city are just city. If they want Neymar on deadline day they could probably get him!! It just really concerns me that with a month to go before the season starts the only confirmed target we have enquired about is Ben Davies, and we still couldn’t get that over the line FFS.

a.k.a.james1spurs
I love the way people are making excuses for Jan, how his form was everybody's fault but his own. One of the things that makes a player great is his mental strength, Jan doesn't have it. I simply can't imagine Kompany allowing anything to shift his focus from doing what he had do in a game, maybe why he is first choice for Belgium and Vertonghen relegated to left back. The real problem for us is simply numbers. At the moment I would only regard Jan and Dawson as actually being adequate for the premier league, Kaboul's injuries and Cliriches mistakes being the problem. We already need two centre backs, get rid of Vertonhen and we need three.
jod
The point is we are talking about last year, lets say we dont start the season well and we lose a few with some 4 nils thrown in, is he going to revert to last season again, if so get rid now while is stock is high
spurs50yrs
I've posted this before but now is not the time to be losing our best centre halves. Utd have lost Vidic and Rio and have a decent budget. City have lost Lescott, Richards could go and the jury is out on Demechelis. Arsenal will lose Vermaelen and will need cover there. Liverpool are actively looking hence the comments from Lovren. Chelsea have sold Luis and probably need cover. That's just in the top 6 in the Prem. Then you have the other clubs like Barca in Europe. Seriously, Spurs won't win bidding wars with most of these. They might be able to stir the hornets nest by bidding for a homegrown player like John Stones but other than that it will be about buying either a younger player and nurturing or finding an old head. I'm still surprised Garay went from Benfica to Zenit. I'm sure he was coming to the Prem.

It would be nice to see the reincarnation of players like Perryman, Mackay, Mabbutt, England, Roberts, Naylor, King, Hughton etc. Not all of them were the greatest talents in the world but they at least put in the hard work and effort week in and week out. We need this as much as, if not more, as we need the individual flair talent and technique of a player like Eriksen.

Why would we sell one of our better players even though he was not too professional last season and his game was not up to scratch. CD are not easy to come by and with Dawson aging, Vlad still having 'L' plates on in the PL and Kaboul injury prone I cannot see Vertonghen going unless he pushes for a move or if we get silly money for him. I would say 25+m.

I would be surprised if he goes, Poch is not going to want too many changes in his first season and it would be hard to replace him and bring in another. On the other hand if he is unhappy at Spurs then I doubt we will keep unhappy players. Problem is we really don't know what Vertonghen wants. yes he was not himself last season then again who was. Until we know his mindset I expect him to be a Spurs player.

Here we go again totally disregarding the events at the club last season and taking out our frustrations on a player who the season before had been our greatest signing since whenever. Even earned the loving nickname "SuperJan". So all of a sudden he isn't good enough for Spurs. You lot make me laugh! Unfortunately not a happy laugh but a sad one. As someone said on another thread, I really hope our players don't read this site.

hudderspur-It does seem everyone is spending and strengthening but not all of them will work out. Ozil to Arsenal last season didn't turn out to be as good as we thought. He is not looking as good for Germany or Arsenal as he did with RM. I can understand if our club decide not to buy too much, the new lads still need to be given a chance to prove themselves and so does Poch. Whether we like it or not this season is another season to test and find out about players and the new manager. No point in spending for the sake of it, we need to see what Poch can do and if these players are good enough. Last season was a disaster with AVB leaving, we never gave time to the players to climatise to the PL and gel or for AVB project and then Tim well that has to the most laughable silly appointment ever, I cannot imagine the players were taught or shown anything, they spent half a season with no plan, direction or valuable input imo so we just don't know how good these players really are. This season we will find out and we will find out how good Poch is as well, then when all that is assessed we engage in the transfer market. This is why we have to lower our expectations this season and be patient.
BigSpursFan

Jan is good enough for Spurs, he had a poor season last season which wasn't just down to him. However, his attitude was down to him, we all have a choice how we react to adversity, he let himself down, hopefully he will have learnt from that. As for being good enough player for us, of course he bloody well is.

So we do a post on Lloris and he signs an extended deal. Are we hoping for the same here? His attitude last year was poor, and IMO, was as a result of all of the interest from Barcelona. He's had a good WC and Barca are poor at the back. There are very few CB's who suit their style of play. He is one of them. I'd suggest Shaw money is what it will take. Anything north of 25M will probably suffice if he wants out. How often will Barca come calling? If there's interest and we do not do a deal, I suspect Jan will pout and will not sign an improved deal. We'll see. We certainly don't pay what they will on the wage side. COYS

Tarkan -Ryan Shawcroos surely deserves a bigger club, but I still struggle to put him on the same level as Vertonghen ability-wise. The key is getting the best out of Jan, but if MP can do that, there is no way Shawcross' best day comes anywhere near Jan's best day. Just my opinion.

jod- this is actually where you get it wrong. Belgium's biggest weakness is that they have no decent full-backs to select. This is why Marc Wilmots is obliged to play two CB's (Jan and Toby Alderweireld) out of position at LB and RB respectively. And out of all the CB's he could pick, he plays Jan on the left because he is the most talented and versatile. Wilmots has said numerous times that if he had better players to pick at LB, Jan would be starting alongside Kompany in central defense. The fact that Jan relegated Vermaelen to the bench also says how much he is rated. He is Belgium's vice-captain and according to Wilmots, one of the first names on the team sheet. Belgium have plenty of CB's to choose from, but no full-backs. The fact that the only two players picked from the Belgian league, Ciman and Vanden Borre, were both full backs should tell you how big the shortage is. So rather than interpreting the fact that Jan plays on the left for Belgium as a negative, it should actually be seen as a positive. Wilmots has repeatedly said that he'll always find a place for Jan, and even though it's not in his best position, overall the Belgian team is stronger with Van Buyten and Kompany in the centre and Jan on the left than a lineup with Jan and Kompany in the centre and a no-name (or one of the other centre-backs ie Vermaelen) on the left.

tarkan - may I suggest watching more Stoke games then? There are plenty of players over there with that playing style. Not this club's ethos, IMO. And one other thing: when was the last time a team of "bruisers" like Stoke won anything? I'm all for putting the effort in, and fighting for the shirt. But modern football requires a bit more technical ability - which is why England have failed to win anything on the international stage for years now.

BelgianSpur - Saying that of the centre backs Vertonghen makes the best left back is not saying much. The Belgian manager is going to say whatever he thinks will keep his players happy, what he does is something else. I'm not sure how Vermaelan comes into it, he's gone so far backwards I'm amazed he's still in the Belgian squad.

so Arse are starting to spend big from a position of strength, Manu have a got a class manager and spending big, City are consolidating, Chelsea are spoilt for choice, Pool are spending the windfall from selling the guy who couldn't play anyway...and us? trying to hold on to our best players....to think we were in the CL just a few seasons ago...such a shame we didn't capitalise on it...

Pochettino will do everything he can to keep players who are hungry to fight a place and to play for our club. Everyone gets a chance to prove themselves. The last thing our manager is going to do is play someone who is moping around…that will work against the team and the player will make things worse with this attitude. We can expect everyone here at spurs to be working their arses off (inc Jan) so I’m ready to see who can actually Claim a place in our team, it won’t be easy for them. Interesting - 'As of right now, the two favorite targets for Barça are Valencia's Jeremy Mathieu and PSG's Marquinhos. According to multiple sources, Barcelona have reached a personal agreement with both of them, including contract details. The problem here is that neither of the teams want to sell, for different reasons. Valencia has been clear that they'll only negotiate if Barça agrees to pay the full buyout fee, of €20 million. The Blaugrana have offered €14 million, and the talks haven't advanced because of it. Mathieu has held meetings with Valencia's board to force his exit, but his club will not change their minds unless Barça pays them. Marquinhos' case is a bit different. He has told Paris Saint-Germain that he wants to go to Catalunya, but PSG won't let it happen until they sign a new CB. They've already bought Brazil's star David Luiz to play with his fellow national team defender Thiago Silva, but they lost another Brazilian, Alex, in the process. If they don't find any replacement to Alex, Marquinhos is going nowhere. If those deals don't materialize, Barcelona has a Plan B, according to sources. That would be Tottenham's Jan Vertonghen, who impressed as Belgium's left-back at the World Cup, showing his versatility to play at a different position, along with his already proven defending skills. Vertonghen's buyout fee is currently set at €22 million, not high for such a quality player.' - Get your head down Jan. COYS.

a.k.a.james1spurs - you misunderstand my point. Belgium is in no way a superior footballing nation, and certainly not when it comes to winning big trophies. Small country, limited resources. This being said, this is in no way meant to criticise England in any way. I would want nothing more than for England to win a major tournament in the near future.

Well 64k for Saurez is a bargain in day. Just shows you how good Levy is at getting top dosh for our players. I know Saurez has his problems but his goals, work rate and overall contribution and threat was brilliant at times. I would have thought he would have gone nearer to 70k had he not had this ban and biting problem, a better reputation then nearer 75-80k. Liverpool have lost out I feel due to his reputation. Saurez will bring at least 20-30 goals may be more. Barca will have a nice setup with Messi, Neymar and Saurez. As much as Liverpool are investing and will invest more they will miss Saurez, not just as a player but psychologically they will have to adjust and that takes time. It's was the same for us, we missed Bale as a player but also psychologically, we had become reliant on him, it's not ideal but almost impossible not to do that when you have a great player among the ranks.

I am glad he has gone, he was a menace, a constant threat, that says how good he was at times.

He lets himself down with the biting thing but in a way you have to feel for the guy. he cannot help it, the whole occasion gets the better of him, he needs help. Barca will be the happier of the two clubs imo.

Right now Jan is worth more to us than money. We need consistency and we cannot afford to make too many changes. Sometimes you just have to accept that money is not everything and in this case I would say that is so.

Next season may be different if he wants out and we get a good price. This season we have Dawson aging, Kaboul injury prone and Vlad with L plates, we cannot afford to lose Jan imo. If he has a good season then his value will remain. I do think we need a CB and we need to let one go. That one imo ought to be either Vlad or Kaboul. My reasoning Kaboul injuries and Vlad is a right sided player and if we keep Jan I do not believe he can play with him. We will miss the presence of a strong player who can head the ball out, Dawson or Kaboul. Vlad and Jan would not be strong enough.

If we keep Vlad then we need a Dawson, Kaboul type player to play left side to compliment Vlad. That could work, but the new left sided player would be second choice and so would Vlad and they would be the second pairing behind Jan and either Dawson/Kaboul. It has to be looked at 'pairing' which side of the CB positions players can play, their natural positions. At the moment we have vlad, Kaboul and Dawson all right sided, two similar players and one different kind of player. If Vlad was a natural left sided player it would have been perfect, him and jan battling it out.

Jan started off well at WHL, but last season he was a disaster (not the only one). Others must have noticed Vertongens very strange World Cup. He seemed to play a deep lying winger role, always needing cover from Kompany etc. He did put in some good crosses but defensively he was absent. And who noticed his position at the central free-kick against Argentina (Messi)? Is that a new tactic which I don't know of? He could be a better player, but his attitude is a problem. Rather sell him now as have another sulky Berbatov around.

Of course he is good enough for Barca, that's why they want him, they don't buy dummies, unlike some. In his first season here he was superb, but then came the manager upheaval firstly playing to AVB's game plan and shipping tons of goals, then playing for a manager's labourer for whom he probably had no respect understandably, getting messed about so he didn't know where he was playing. If he leaves, together with Dawson (hopefully), we will be left with Chiriches, is he good enough, and Kaboul our permanent resident in the treatment room. we would then have to get our skates on to get in 2 proper PL standard CBs, not buy one get one free, or liquidation or charity shop sale bargains, but genuinely decent quality CBs, time for Baldini to earn his corn and get out and find them. Is this what Lloris means by the ambition and the chairman's vision, less than a month to go to the start of the PL and potentially no proper CBs.

shedboy2, it was all lost the year we were competing in the CL. The second we quaified for the group stages that season, all that should have mattered was getting top 4 again. Harry wanted to win the CL and lost sight of the only prize that mattered. We did not get CL, did not win any cups and certainly did not win Europe as Crouch was knocking the bus over after Harry had thrown Aaron Lennon under it. After that, there was nothing left in the tank and we went in to relegation form for a few months with players completely spent. Getting in to the top 4 is only the first step. We thought we had arrived and didn't realize it was just the drive-thru. COYS
peterballb
Hi Belgianspur no worries. Thanks for clearing that up. I agree with your assesment of the Belgium team as it stands now. Far better technically than England and as good as any in terms of ability but I don't agree that the lack of technical ability has been England's problem winning international competitions, unless we are talking about post Hoddle era which was the start of the decline imo. COYS!
a.k.a.james1spurs
Suarez get's his wish with his move to Barca, no doubt hurried along by his biting incident and ban, how convenient it has turned out for him, perhaps he ain't so daft after all. Barca are also no doubt quite pleased to get him for £64M, a bargain price because he is now "damaged goods". We will see who they get in place of him, Bony looking favourite, but of course they also have another 20+/season striker in Sturridge, so they will be OK.
Frank
What a difference between the actions of Liverpool having just qualified for the CL, and the reaction when we did. Did we go out and sign some quality on the back of our qualification, or to ensure we could sustain a challenge on both the CL and the PL fronts. Incidentally of course Redknapp tried to win the CL, surely that's the point of qualifying. There is no point getting into the top 4 if you don't intend to mount a genuine attempt to win it, our QF place was at the time the best performance from a rookie club. The problem was we made no attempt to sustain our position. Oh how we have regressed since, we have just struggled by the skin of our teeth to get into the EL, and will struggle to sustain our 6th place, due to a lack of ambition and determination to recover to our position of 4 years ago, as our current total lack of transfer activity compared to our rivals indicates.
Frank
BigSpursFan - I thought Vlad was left-footed and supposed to be cover for Jan? As far as I know he is definitely a left-sided player. When AVB bought him the reasoning was that he could cover at LB like Jan if needed, and it was to balance out the fact that Dawson and Kaboul were right-sided players. My opinion (for what it's worth) is that Dawson should no longer start, and Kaboul is not consistent enough (performance and health-wise) to be in the squad. I believe that the defence would be fixed if we could find a decent right-sided CB to partner Jan, and a better LB than Rose. Get the Ben Davies deal over the line, and look for a decent CB. Lovren was mentioned, he could be the sort of physical presnce and aerial threat we need. I can understand the reasoning behind MP's interest for both those players.
BelgianSpur
If any player wants to stay and the coach wants him, they will stay. If any player wants out and our valuation is met, they will go. There really isn't anything magical about it. That applies to every club out there. Messi is for sale. I believe the quoted price was in the neighbourhod of a quarter of a billion Euros. Thats billion with a B. Oddly, there have been no takers. Ronaldo was always up for sale while at United. RM eventually stumped the cash. There is a price for Aguero, Suarez, Bale - name your player. None of these are relevant to Spurs as we cannot afford any of their wages nor do we have guaranteed CL, which is what they all expect. If ManU do not get back in to the CL (and it is not as given), they will lose players. City, Chelsea, United, Liverpool, Arsenal, Spurs. 2 of those clubs will not be in the CL. Other than Spurs, which of those clubs can afford to miss out? Yes they are all spending big and increasing wages. One of the other 5 (and if we can sneak in 2) will suffer some pain as a result of missing out. This season will be made or lost by what the top teams do against the bottom half of the table. Allardyce, Redknapp, Martinez are usually good for taking points off of top teams. Beat the bottom 10, home and away and you are at 60 points. Then find 15 points out of the remaining 18 matches and you have CL. Not pretty. Probably ugly. All that matters is getting there. Personally, I'd love to see United and Liverpool miss out with Pool falling back to 7th. They would then have a large squad for 3 competitions and would have serious issues (no playing time, large wages, lower revenues). As mentioned, if United are not in CL next season, they will be in meltdown mode especially if they sign some of these aging players that are being mooted. It's going to be interesting. There will be corollary damage. Which of Martinez, Pochettino or Rodgers deals best with 4 competitions, rotation etc. The expectations on all three have been ramped up. Can't wait for this season, just from a fan of the PL. There is a lot going on. COYS
peterballb
Frank you are comparing apples to oranges. Liverpool have resources to pay players huge amounts (Suarez and Gerrard wre both on over 200k/week). We already had a bloated squad when we qualified for CL because we were in Europe every year. It's not the same at all. Liverpool, since falling, have been paring down their squadsize. They also have a lot of aging parts that need replacement. They don't have to sell to buy. They can just buy and they can pay the players monies we never would. No comparison. COYS
peterballb
I agree, interesting season ahead. I wish we could do without the nuisance of the EL ourselves. Liverpool may buy a striker but much like us after losing Bale, they just lost their talisman and it will be hardfor them to adapt. I guess we'll see how good Sturridge really is with defenses focusing on him alone. Man U still have to revamp their squad further. Either they go for a big bang approach and buy lots of new players (like us last year), but that may prove challenging from an integration perspective (especially for the foreigners such as Ander Herrera). As things stand, Arsenal, City and Chelsea have all strengthened and I think that'll be the top 3. We're looking at 4th at best, although I expect better performances from last year's signings. We should be better even if we don't sign anyone.
BelgianSpur
Belgian, I am pretty sure that Chiriches is a right-sided player. He is cover at RB, if required. He looks composed when at RCB (even if he dawdles on the ball a bit too much for the PL) and looks completely lost on the left. There is potential there, but he is not one that can be moved around willy-nilly and succeed. Given his skill set, he might actually make for a very good RB. It's a large reason why we have not really gone in for Alderweirald who is another one who needs consistency in partner and needs to play on the right side. I am always shocked at how many mistaes that Alderweirald makes (for club and country). Most are when he ventures out of his comfort zone. He needs constant baby-sitting. Vlar, Schar, Lascelles would all help without being ridiculous on the wage or fee fronts. COYS
peterballb
Actually, we could do worse getting Lang, Schar and Rodriguez. They are al very good on the ball, are young and have been playing senior football for quite a while. Just saying. There are options out there. COYS
peterballb
Vlad is two-footed, is preferred on the right, but can also play left.
MAN ON!
Frank, deliberately or not you seem to have overlooked the difference with our 'qualification' with that of Liverpool's. We only qualified for the CL after beating the Swiss Boys in late August. We couldn't guarantee anyone the CL until that qualification - it was a pretty close run thing... Btw your thoughts on Sanchez ? Another failure coming up ?
Highgatespur
Apparently he played on the left side of the CB pairing at Steua, but he plays on the right side for the national team. I stand corrected. But if that's the case, I'd like to see him and Jan play together - maybe that is the pairing we need.
BelgianSpur
Frank, it does seem to me that the "biting" incident was a little too convenient for Barcelona. It would not be the first time that they have been involved in shenanigans. The Neymar deal is still under investigation (as is Bale's with RM). The transfer fee is about 20M less than what Liverpool should have been able to get (even with the ban). It was being suggested in January that his market value was over 100M, though if there was truth to the 70M foreign buyout, I guess that was the fee/valuation. Again, even that makes no sense. Bale goes. Basically sets the market value. Suarez is on fire and looking to be far more productive than Bale and they give him a new contract with a significantly lower buyout than Bale's sale price. Makes no sense to me. Again seems too convenient. COYS
peterballb
peterballb - don't forget age and contract length also come into play when determining a transfer fee. At the time of the transfer, Bale was 23, Suarez is 27. Bale had just signed a new 5-year deal, not sure what's left on Suarez' contract. These factors do come into play. Whether they justify the difference in price is another matter...
BelgianSpur
Man On, on point as usual!!! and Peter so agree with your post in reply to Frank's ...

peter- you can't blame Arry for our failure to buy quality players when we qualified for the CL...the problem is higher up...Arry as we all know will spend whatever you let him...the board moved focus to the stadium and that has meant no new money spent on the team ever since....so much for backing AVB...and no sign of backing MoPo yet (clock's still ticking)...hopefully the stadium delay will mean we eventually buy players rather than risk paying tax!
shedboy2
shedboy2 - AVB had 100 million to spend (and he did). Granted he had to deal with the departure of Spurs' best player, and granted, overall the club broke even, but he still had 100 million to spend on players of his choosing. That is hardly "not backing the manager" IMO. To be fair, we have been spending money in the last windows. Levy has balanced it out by selling some players but that's fair enough. We've just missed on some of these signings and that's where to problem lies.
BelgianSpur
Noy backing the manager is selling a good player, then using the funds of the sale to finance other areas of the club. Essentially David Moyes' life at Everton.

shedboy2, xcept Harry stated that we needed two or three quality addiions. Gallas, VDV, Pletikosa and Pienaar were hardly unknowns, were all wanted by Harry and definitely improved the starting XI and options off the bench (not to mention Sandro). The problem was that Harry forgot that there were not only 15 players in the squad and burnt out those who were used. The players themselves compl;ained that they were knackered before Christmas. Whose faut is that? Blame ENIC all you want but all of those guys wee at the top of our wage scale and were all what Harry wanted. He just forgot that Kranjcar, Corluka, Pav, Bentley and others were on the bench and that Pletikosa was even in the squad. We again went in to relegation form the following year for the same reasons. Under Harry, there are starters and there are the rest. Same at QPR. The team he inherited from Hughes was good enoug to survive the drop. He spent loads more, played his favourites and left the others to depreciate and rot. I suppose that, Pompey, West Ham, Southampton and Bournemouth wre all ENIC's fault too. ENIC are also to blame for Harry's scouts (funny, when it happened Harry said himself that "he" did not believe Suarez and VDV could play together, but now, as it's clear buffoonery, it is now his scouts that dun dunned that) not wanting Suarez. It's all ENIC's fault that they did not bring in players that didn't want to come and put them on wages the club could not afford. It's thanks to ENIC that our wages were not 110% f turnover when Harry left as it was with Pompey and is with QPR. COYS

I really don't get this concern about our lack of transfers. I still say, we have to evaluate the players we have first. This impatience is what gets us into trouble. How can people say levy needs to give managers time, be patient then supporters act impatiently. I say get over it, this season is 'evaluating' and allowing Poch to get his ideas across. As long as we stay top six I see no reason for spending money this season unless we look like dropping out of that top six. I say save the pennies until the evaluation season is over and go for it next season.

We have a large squad as it is and we need to know who is really good enough, we cannot go by last season, that was disrupted with AVB going and then having a rookie in charge. Think positively, may be all our signings will come good and be like new signings. If Paulinho comes good, Erikensen continues his good work, lamela comes good, Soldado starts smashing them in, Kane steps up, Vertonghen gets back to being Vertinghen, kaboul has a decent season and Vlad becomes accustomed to the Pl and reaches his potential, Townsend and Lennon improve, Sandro and Kaboul have good season without too many injuries, Ade contributes enough, Capoue comes good and we have a surprised step up of a couple of youngsters, then I say we have enough in our locker to challenge. Fact is we don't know. Last season was supposed to be a season of gelling and changing things, but it was disrupted and so we lost that season, and it has to be this season now. Then by the end of the season we will know what we have both in terms of players and manager.

peterballb, on yet another Harry Redknapp attack forgets to tell us that Harry got us top 4 again the season after he took us to the quarter final of the Champions League. He tells us that we hit relegation form after that wonderful CL campaign and yet we just missed out on top 4 finishing in 5th position which qualified us for the Europa. Harry nearly relegated us according to peterballb and yet still got us European football??? The following season, Harry took us back to the promised land of CL football once again only to have that old curse of ENIC strike when THFC were to become the first and last club ever to be kicked out of the CL because Chelsea won the CL, who we finished above. Cor blimey Harry finished above the mighty Blues on a shoe string in comparison to to the huge CFC player personal budget and finished just a single point shy of 3rd spot! EUFA have since banned that pathetic rule! Yesterday peterballb proudly boasted that ENIC overachieved us (what a total loser) when they got us top 4, forgetting to mention that it was Redknapp who achieved this twice? Redknapp's record in his 3 full seasons was 4th, 5th, and 4th and yet peterballb has written literally hundreds of posts on here slaughtering the guy. He still can't let go of his disdain of Redknapp all these seasons after he overachieved ENIC???
Pele10
peter- tired old arguments as to why the board didn't stump up when we hit CL...Sandro was already agreed, Pienaar came in the winter window, VDV was too good to turn down and almost too late ...what was the excuse for AVB not getting the LB he wanted? nor any of the names on his list? the truth is they are excuses....the stadium seems to be sucking the lifeblood out of the club....and that doesn't look likely to change for years, if not generations....
shedboy2
BelgianSpur, the players AVB got, regardless of the sticker price, were not the players that AVB wanted. He wanted Moutinho. He wanted Willian. He wanted James Rodriguez. He wanted Laendro. All deals were apparently close. None got done. Every other player we got were further down the list. In fact, there is an awful lot to suggest that some of the players AVB got, he did not want at ll. Baldini wanted them. All managers have been backed. None of the managers, except Jol and Harry were left to carry out what they were doing. Harry wanted Defoe, Keane and Crouch when all of Suarez, Dzeko and Falcao were available for the same amounts. Harry got who he wanted early on. His pursuit of players in their 30's was never going to happen so he was backed no further unless it cost nothing (Nelsen, Saha). AVB was backed and then allowed to walk only 3 months after bringing in 100M of players. Still, he had it better than Ramos who won a trophy, lost our two best strikers without really replacing them and losing most of the starters with new foreign players. 6 games in and ENIC were already talking to Redknapp. The problem with ENIC is not, IMO, getting in players or spending money on transfer fees. It is in backing the coaches that they hired and for whom they spent all of the money, that ENIC, in my books, fails this team, time and again. COYS
peterballb
peterballb-I agree re HR. He may have gave us some good football and CL that season but he basically got us a squad of players that lost their value and he run the best players into the ground.

I think the problem with managers at Spurs is the pressure of getting top four, they dare not use squad players, they cannot trust them, the manager is under constant stress of getting top four, but the only way to achieve success is to use the squad and get they all playing to a similar level. HR, AVB were managers that focused mainly on the best players, and what I would call managers rather than coaches. Poch is coach/manager imo and will use the squad and get youngsters up to scratch I believe. He will not be so fearful, well I hope not, I hope Levy has said top four is our aim but not immediately. Until our squad, youngsters are up to scratch, both footballing wise and mentally then we will not be able to sustain anything.

The youngsters, the squad members that are not starters all need help mentally to adjust to being part of the whole, so when they are called upon we don't see a huge gap between them and the starter. The mentality of the youngsters and squad members I believe is weak at Tottenham, because of the likes of HR and to some extent AVB. They never believed they would get chances, so if they were called upon their head wasn't right.

AVB was trying to use the squad and was an improvement on HR in that way but he still disregarded some players and did we see any youngsters coming through.

In this financial climate, madness of football, a club like ours need to utilise and prepare all players, from the youngsters to the first team squad, they all have to be ready, both footballing wise and mentally, to do that they need to believe they have a chance and are needed and wanted. I am hoping Poch can bring that.
BigSpursFan
peterballb writes, "BelgianSpur, the players AVB got, regardless of the sticker price, were not the players that AVB wanted. He wanted Moutinho. He wanted Willian. He wanted James Rodriguez. He wanted Laendro. All deals were apparently close." Totally true that AVB wanted those players, but a total bull that the deals were close apart from Willian who LOSER Levy forget to sign a subject to medical clause after agreeing terms with his club. What a plonker! Remember Jose taking the tiss out of us on that one? As usual under ENIC, it's so close and yet so very, very, very far... Unless they are selling our best players of course! Then it's a certainty!!!
Pele10
Pele I am fully aware of where we finished in the year we got top 4 with, what was, in my and other posters opinions, the third best squad in the PL. I never said Harry relegated us. I said we played relegation level football for two months whioch is why in both seasons we went from being in for the title to on the outside looking in. Colour it how you wish, it will not change the facts. As for an old curse, it's like luck, you make it for yourself. Those who wat around for luck always sit, head in hands, at the end, wondering WHY ME? Had we done the business against the teams that were relegation fodder we would have not had to worry about losing that spot, but we fell down to fourth because the focus was on the wrong target. You are free to call it as you see it as I will continue to do. Harry is a hack. That squad was the best I have seen in a Spurs squad ever. He just couldn't see them behind his favourites. It cost him and it cost us. Like Adebayor, e is concerned with I, no we. He always referred to the team as they and had the temerity to call supporters of the club idiots. I will continue to disagree with you. I will not call Harry names as you feel you have the right to do with Levy and now I see I have joined the list. Harry didn't overachieve ENIC. Spurs gabve him a platform well beyond his ability. Sounds awful familiar. Who else might that apply to? They really should stay well away from management appointments. Beyond that, they know what they are doing. Look at what those "losers" are worth. BTW, where is your 1B so that you can show us all ho it's done? COYS
peterballb
Pele, perhaps you should look in to the facts before you post things. William was almost done when Anzhi came in and gazumped us paying what even AVB called "stupid" money for the plyer. Reports suggested that wages were a done deal and that it was the 5M extra that made us lose out on it. Leandro, as report of the time indicated, was within a Million of signing and Moutinho was withing half a Million. This was all in January 2013 long before we almost got Willian again in the summer of 2013 when he went for wages we cannot afford and used us, as many others have to get that - see Rossi, Aguero and many more. Bu hey, on't let those silly facts get in the way of your crusade against the windmills. COYS
peterballb
We had a 13pts lead over the scum that season that we let slip. The scum finished 1pts and 1place above us. Shame.
Arky
BigSpursfan, I do not agree with your assessment of AVB. I believe he ued the squad very well. He made mistakes in Europa in the first season by making too many changes (thus having essentially an A team and a B team) which caused us to lose games we should have won because of lack of sharpnes nd cohesion. We walked through cup games last season because he took it seriously rotating to avoid fatigue but making changes with more of a flow to them. Unfortunately he was hindered in all that by haing 7 new faes to England, 2 loan returnees and injuries to Sandro, Kaboul, Rose and Lennon, not to mention Adebayor being Adebayor, and he really didn't have a lot of options in the squad. Lamela, Eriksen, Chiriches were not ready to jump in. He was forced to play Paulinho, Capoue (who then got injured) and Soldado from the off along with Townsend who wasn't ready. I said at the time, it would not be until January that he would have any clue about his best XI and even after he left we never saw it. I never wanted AVB as coach, but I respect and understand what he was doing and had he been left to do his job his way he would have wn cups wth Spurs. There is no doubt that there would have been a lot of boring football until every player got themselves established, but I could see what he was doing. Don't kid yourself, the reason Chelsea won the CL was because the veterans (who would carry the club at the and of the season) were rested and had more in the tank for the cup run ins. DiMatteo was fired the next season as well because the players didn't want him either. Very few coaches have more power than the players nowadays. How often do we see top players go out the door because they do not see eye to eye with the coach. Instead the coaches get the sack and a new boss is brought in. AVB will be fine. He's in the CL next season and while his team have no chance of winning it, getting beyond the group stages will not be out of the realm of possibility regardless of what group they are in. They will not be an easy team to beat. COYS

Fanny adams - agree with you mate. We finish 6th and are already going backwards. arsenal are sending out a big signal, they were leading the prem last year and slipped. They dont want that to happen again. As for anyone saying that they will have problems keeping Sanchez, Remy , Walcott and ox happy, ox and walcott are injured most of the season anyway. They have loads of midfield options now and I am sure they have not finished yet. Man u are going to strengthen even more and chelsea will add as well. That just leaves liverpool, who have already signed about 5 players. Anyone who thinks we can sustain a top 4 challenge with our squad is delusional.

I hated harry as a person but for what he done whilst manager cannot be denied. His last year he did nothing more than show his true colours.
The one thing i hated about harry redknapp the most is i hated praising him,i disliked him as a person.
Harry Redknapp would have done really well at Spurs if he loved the club as much as he loved himself, his loyalty was only with himself & his bank balance.Probably the most selfish manager of all time.

peterballb your arguments are so badly flawed it`s unreal.Proof is in the pudding & you usually end up where you deserve to end up.

harry redknapp only looks good though because Enic have failed repeatedly to get someone decent in the club as manager.

When harry redknapp is the best you can do in 10+years then there is something seriously wrong with Levys manager hiring policy.
IMO Spurs are not that much better than Newcastle in the circus show we have become. They are the worst but we are not that far behind.

BigpursFan, as for Pochettino bringing along the kids, time will tell. Personally think it is all more a fortuitous circumstance than reality. Which of the Southampton kids were not already "developed" before he came in there? I am not minimizing that he got them to play better than they previously had, but they were all young players who were still developing (as many of our squad players are). 12 players appeared in 25 or more PL contests. He used the same lineup every game (plus ou moins). Martinez did too. Rodgers did three. It will be very interesting to see how they all do this season in four competitions. Expectations and the stakes are so much higher for all of them. I just think that the whole idea of his bringing kids in from the academy and making them stars is a myth. It will also be extremely difficult to do at Spurs where you have 30 senior players. I like him. I don't think he is qualified, but, if ENIC give him the time to learn and gain experience, he can succeed. He is a task master, sets his teams up to play attacking football and expects 100% of all of his players. The fact his former players speak glowingly of him tells me that he is a good guy and that he is fair. He certainly deserves some credit for the development of the players, but most of them had already been brought in to the club by Southampton's scouts, who really deserve the largest plaudits in all of this. If he gets our squad to play to their potential, he will be worth every farthing and we will be back in to the top 4. That's how good I believe our squad is on the potential side of things. Execution is where we have been let down since Jol (who overachieved in his last two seasons, but also showed he did not have much further upside). COYS
peterballb
Fanny adams, that's right, you usually end up where you deserve to end up. If we had the third best squad and we finished fourth, guess what, the talent did what talent does. We did not overachieve and just because you think differently does not mean I am incorrect or getting done. Harry is what he is. Look at his career numbers. They are what they are. Look where almost all of the clubs he has managed have gone after he left. He is a manager who brings in players that are above the level that the team can afford, runs them in to the ground and finishes below where their potential should have them leaving the club in far orse economic shape than when he came in to the club. No doubt you'll blame the owners (two minutes after complaining that evy doesn't back his managers) but Harry generally gets what Harry wants. I don't dislike him because of his time at Spurs. I saw his dog and pony act for what it was a decade before he was even contemplated at Spurs. The proof is in the pudding. He is what he is. He barely got a PL club back up to the PL. Good for him. Should have won the Championship in a trot with the players he had at his disposal. COYS

The CPO could have and should have been done months ago. This is dragging on despite being in the best interests of the area and having support from all levels of government concerned. Yet it dragged. The granting of the CPO is only the next step as there are appeals and, no doubt, negociations will begin again with Archway to see if a middle ground can be reached before Archway, at the last second, file the appeal to which they are entitled. This just moves the process to the next step and confirms that Archway will, eventually, have to sell or be told what they are getting. It is not, as is claimed, a go-ahead, unless that go-ahead is the go-ahead to the next step. It just means that it is much more than likely that Archway will not get what they want. What they will get is not yet determined. COYS

Not because I felt like wasting my time listening to all of the polemics involved, but because it is a minimal requirement. Some interesting topics. Firstly, we can absolutely blame Harry for not getting his 2 to3 big signings. He was the stupid idiot that took the wage bill from £67m to £92m whilst the squad proliferated out of control with mediocrity. He ended up wasting his transfer budget on wages of ostracised players who were sitting on the jacksie and taking millions in salaries. Those like Peterbalb who read the financial reports know this stuff. He will also know it took AVB 2 summers of offloading 25 players and only bringing in 14 to clean up the mess Harry left. Levy was also to blame for letting his manager get out of control.

It's also a double celebration today. Compulsory purchase are tough to get clearance for and whilst too late is a massive step for the stadium project.

Father played for Dumbarton. He pushed me to play other sports (baseball, hockey, squash and rugby). My eldest plays hockey, "soccer" and baseball - quite good at all three while the youngest plays "soccer" and will be starting hockey in the fall. "Soccer" was a sport I always "hacked" around with. Enjoyed fooling around with it when I was not actually playing other sports but I was farly busy and there are only so many hours in a week. On the pitch when goofing around with my friends who played rep "soccer" I was not out of place. You can't do everything. As soon as I got good at baseball and rugby, there really wasn't time for anything else Winters I played squash to keep up the cardio only going back to hockey in my mid-20's. I was never a great skater (likely thanks to my father's "soccer" genes) so was pleasantly surprised to see that my eldest skates effortlessly like the wind. Pretty good rushing defenceman, when he can be bothered (applies to most 7 year olds). As with any of the other kids I coach, I just want him to love playing the game and to be able to continue to do so through adulthood. COYS

Dublin, I think it only means that construction in the two phases where the hold up was Archway Steel can commence so long as the works are extraneous to Archway Steel's property and business. We still need to get an agreement on the sale and relocation costs and Archway needs to move out before we can really do the rest. All this does is cement in stone that Archway will now have to go. Will it be by agreement or will it be as a result of the government fixing a price. This is not over. The conclusion is just no longer in doubt (as if it ever were with all levels of government in on the NDP). It has just taken a long time to get here. CPO's normally take 3-6 months, depending on complexity. This was dragged out to 14 months. Read in to that what you will. COYS

Highgatespur, I think that Beckham, whether intentionally or not, got the woman's game to flourish.Woman's football is so far ahead and I think that many of the stars that pushed it aong Mia Hamm, Kara Lang etc, all had such a fascination with how he played the game, and, as the movie states, wanted to "Bend it like Beckham". He'd of course, have to get Posh's permission first (hint feed her then ask her, she's just really, really hungry). Seriously though, he breaks down barriers and he gets people working together. It's the only reason I cold understand us wanting the OS (though it was always a side play). That would have brought Beckham and his people in to the naming rights etc. I'm sure hs intent is here. Can he get people to remove all of the obstacles and ancient thought processes out of the way of the game. That is the challenge. COYS
peterballb
As for the CPO developments, am I enthused? It's a step closer. This does not, as some are suggesting, mean that we can raize the Archway Steel site tomorrow and start the build. It's the next step and now any chance that this will not go forward has been removed. The time frame, however, is a long way from being put in place. It seems incredibly optimistic tht we'll be in the completed stadium to start the 2016/2017 season, the same time West Ham will be able to move in to the OS. Archway are still there. There has not been a deal agreed. They know that have to sell, but when will there be agreement on a "fair" rice or will the government have to determine that as well assuming there is not a meeting of the minds. It's good news. peterballb continues to make the lower resources of THFC compared to the likes of Liverpool and Arsenal his continuing excuse for our multi billionaire owners failings both on and off the pitch at THFC, forgetting to mention that it's the board of directors responsibility to create higher resources for the club so the club can compete on a higher level. How did Arsenal achieve this? How have they pulled away from THFC vastly since ENIC took over OUR club on a resources level? How did they raise these resources? The AFC board knew it was 100% essential to get more bums on seats to create higher resources, so went out and did the old Audere Este Facere and borrowed the money to buy themselves by far the best football stadium in the capitol and almost doubled stadium attendance. Took a huge risk, put the club into huge short term debt which forced them to sell many of their star players to service the debt, but still maintained Champions League status because they gave their head coach TOTAL control of the football side of the club. Have a great relationship with Wenger, something LOSER Levy has never had with any of his coaches! AFC created these higher resources by building a state of the art stadium, and maintaining CL status and the vast revenue that comes with it! And because AFC built a brand new stadium were able to attract resources from the naming rights that came from Emirates! They have created their own resources!!! In contrast 4.5 billion quids worth of THFC board members have increased stadium attendance by only a couple of hundred seats in a decade and a half, and without the huge debt AFC have had to carry for their stadium, have failed to invest in the team sufficiently to create a CL level squad. ENIC have failed both on the pitch and on the stadium front. Refused to spend to build a stadium or invest in the team sufficiently! Then of course their is merchandising revenue. The AFC board have done shrewd business deals with Nike who have produced them top quality kits and training gear which can be seen all over the world from their customers. And have just pulled off a massive deal with Puma who out bid Nike on their new kit and merchandising deal! In contrast Levy has refused to do business with both Nike and Adidas because they control 100% the distribution and marketing of their products. We have Under Armour because they allow Mr Byrite a 100% an exclusive launch for several weeks in his crap shops and appalling almost unnavigable website, and allow Levy to choose the release date. Our merchandising revenue is tiny in comparison to AFC! So ENIC have failed to produce CL football despite their vast wealth, have failed to build the club a a new stadium in what will be at least two decades, and refuse to business with the two top guns of football merchandising. They have also ruled out 100% the other possibility of higher resource as the owners of Liverpool Chelsea, Man City, etc etc have by not spending a single penny of their vast wealth on the very team their own??? But it's even worse than that. ENIC have created a system at THFC where the only resources that are made available to the head coach are through the sells of players. The head coach has absolute no access to any form of stadium revenue (European or domestic) to fund his team. No access to the sponsorship money that comes in from AIA, and no access to any of the merchandising revenue that come in from crap Under Armour. The only form of the clubs resources that the head coach is given access to are from the sells of his own players. This is exactly why no purchases have been made thus far this summer. No players sold equals no new players. Meanwhile our bitter rivals the Arse are investing heavily again in their squad along this summer with the other top Premiership teams. Pulling further and further away from us... And it will be West Ham United next... JOE LEWIS OUT!!!

man on- I'm not so sure I've always been consistent...many years ago I used to defend Levy and the wage structure...I thought we were being run as a football business but very well...keep wages below 70% t/o reinvest player sales added with a transfer budget, like compound interest it was always going to deliver at some point...but then the property plan became apparent I realised we are being duped...Pele and I don't agree on a lot of points...but he's right in that our owners don't know how to leverage or market the brand...
shedboy2
Schneiderling, Bony seem to be who we are most consistentl linked with, which is strange considering Verts is nearly gone (according to some on here) and our obvious weakness on the left which suggests the papers ITKs don't have a bulls notion about Spurs let alone our transfer targets. I think I'll just wait for official announcements and not sweat the sill rumours and sheetstirring others are getting involved in.
Slurms McKenzie
Slurms, join the club....I'm just waiting for the reaction regarding the Yahya from Nigeria rumours... it must be 1010th player we have been linked to this summer.
Highgatespur
It's amazing how many thousands of lines of opinion are generated on this site in the absence of anything solid to discuss. Of course, when all else fails the old chestnut of Levy and ENIC vs Football is always good for a few thousand lines (I'm firmly with Frank, Shedboy2 and Pele). The lack of transfer activity could be down to any of the many reasons stated on here but could also be that Poch got the job on the basis of not spending much if anything in Net terms. After all, his main claim to fame is his ability to improve players so that would fit Levy's spending strategy perfectly. I am looking forward to the season as much as anything to see which of the scenarios plays out....if Poch is tuck with the same squad can he adapt his tactics to the players and improve results, does he have a Plan B in games (Southampton fans have suggested not) or will we stagger from match to match with square pegs in round holes. I'm not expecting much this season to be honest because I think Poch has a very difficult job and he will have to adjust to a higher level of operation with the Europa and domestic cup games. Will his high-pressing tactics cause players to fade as the season progresses or will he have a more sophisticated approach. It's going to be interesting whichever players we do or do not sign.
Harry-Kari
MAN ON!, not sure consistent is a good thing (with due respect to the alleged 'consistent' posters)! We live in a dynamic environment. Spurs should imo be consistent wrt flair, style and improvement. There are far too many external factors controlling everything in life and Spurs! Bolton and Wigan were consistent and forever fighting relegation. IMO, the views on this forum MUST be variable, dependent upon the dynamics at the club. I dislike a particular player today, but under a new manager I might begin to love that player. That is NOT hypocrisy, more keeping up with the dynamics. I am not defending anyone here as they are ALL entitled to their opinions. Whilst many (including me) slagged off Ade for his attitude at the start of last season, I loved him when he returned under Tim and did the biz. Let's see if Poch can swing the mood here!. COYS!
Critical_Spur
In fairness, lots of players had poor attitudes last season, as did our interim coach. We need a couple of winners and leaders in this team as well as keeping our best players such as Jan, lLoris etc. Someone above mentioned Shawcross and whilst not the best, to add his heart and fight to this team (and he is better than Dawson, knows the pl) would be a good thing. Lets get a left back in and a centre back for starters. We already got 6million for Livermore, so do the deals now and let poch work with those players FFs.
Windlespur

More euphoria on here because a tiny little steel company have been ordered to sell their land to Joe Lewis? That's only the first stage of course. Now we will have to wait (conveneinetly for ENIC) a couple more years or so for a settlement to be reached. My god how Loser levy will draw this little battle out as long as possible, whilst he tries to find some mug to fund his stadium. The sheet metal company are not the major problem of course, never have been, because all they have been waiting for all along is to get the money they want, as any company would who are being ordered to leave their home. The major problem holding up the new stadium is ENIC not having come anywhere near to raising the budget for the build! AFC secured their naming rights deal with the Emirates after they secured the vast majority of the stadium budget from that famous Bank of Scotland loan. This is what encouraged the Emirates to come on board. At THFC not a penny has been borrowed to build the stadium. Levy is totally relying on naming rights to fund the vast majority of the build. Always the wrong way round with ENIC! What mug is going to give a British Tax exile who is worth 4.5 dollars, 300 million quid up front to build his stadium. "Here you go Tax exile, here's 300 big ones for your stadium. I'm quite happy to wait 3, or 4, or 5 years for you to put my name on your roof." "I'm fully prepared to trust my cash with you apprentice for all those years" "Don't worry Big Joe, I will wait as long as it takes for your apprentice to deliver"... Meanwhile West Ham United FC have the stadium, with a new roof to increase atmosphere, transport links, the retractable seating that LOSER Levy's so called experts never even thought of, and Adidas on board already. Now just watch further major investment poor in whilst LOSER Levy spends the next couple of years in the courts haggling over a few mil with Archway Steel...
Pele10
Critical_Spur. I completely agree with you but, I'm not talking about the dynamics of life and having an open and flexible mind..... (I too have criticised Ade for the exact same things and, changing my stance on him, is not being a hypocrite. Likewise with shed boy changing his mind on ENIC). With Ade, It was about being able to forgive and forget and appreciate the here and now... When I speak of hypocrisy, I'm referring to people who insist on telling others how to behave, think and conduct themselves on here whilst not recognising the fact that they are displaying the very same traits as those they criticise and mock.... 95% of the time I disagree with Frank, Pele and Shedboy but, I will always admire their consistency of thought regardless of wether I agree or not, or even if it angers me... I don't have any ongoing battles with anyone on here bar one. I wonder why that is, even though I agree with most of what he writes re: Spurs. Up the Lilywhites!

Congratulations Shedboy and Fanny on seeing the wood from the trees as far as the way ENIC and Levy take the supporters for a ta ta season after season, you are certainly in the minority. When was the last time we "nett spent" in a window rather than simply re-cycling most of the income from sales, as well as trousering a few quid as last summer. This includes under Redknapp when we "re-possessed" the likes of Defoe, Kaboul, and Keane, who hadn't been paid for. Yes Fanny you are absolutely right, Spurs charge top top prices, and provide a mediocre product. Shedboy, if the emphasis, and focus ,is entirely on building the stadium, when is it not happening, and how long can a snotty nosed owner of a tuppeny halfpenny metal bashers outfit, hold it up. I can't think of anybody else with Lewis's financial clout allowing this to happen, if they were really determined to prevail. There is surely more than one way of skinning a cat, and "convincing"or "persuading" them that it might be in their own interest to move, never mind messing about with fat arsed Pickles.
Frank
Just read that at long last the CPO has been OKed by the Govt at last, now let's see how fast we progress now.
Frank
Well said MAN ON. I don't usually post often because of time. But all I ask for is for posters to be fair in their assessments of players. Believe me I understand how difficult that is when you are passionate but it really sends the thread into a dark place when we get on here and slag this or that player. I totally understand where Pele10 and Frank are coming from. There are both passionate about the club and see ENIC/Lewis/Levy as moving too slowly to bring glory to the club whilst others look at the fact that from a positional point of view they have reversed the fortunes of the club which now sits in the top 6 and contends for top 4 every year. All I ask is for some measure of fairness in posts. Be that as it may, I respect everyone's right to post what they feel less the personal fights.
jvd
PELE10 are you suggesting that the local business which has been ordered to sell its property, will appeal the ruling? I don't think they will as they is too much local opposition against them as well as it could get expensive for them to continue to fight. I also suspect that once the ruling has been given THFC will begin work on those areas of the plan which can go forward without that particle parcel of land. I agree that we are likely to see 3 or 4 years pass before we open the new stadium but not for the reasons you espouse. I really don't believe financing will be a problem for them.
jvd
Yaheya, the Nigerian wonder kid has signed a pre contract agreement a while back. He trains with us for the summer and then goes back on loan at Celta Vigo. A project.
jvd

tarkan mardinCOYS
Pele it is not logical to think Levy/ENIC are delaying the build. A new stadium would increase our value and make us more saleable. Regardless of what anyone thinks about their footballing skills they are obviously exceptional business people so the arguement about finding finance doesn't stack up, Levy would sort that in seconds. Agree trophy rate is terrible, success on the pitch could hardly be worse and if MP gets sacked in 18mnths (I would have liked to have seen Benitez/Mancini showing a statement of intent) ) then I'll be in the ENIC out camp but sometimes I think you have got to take the good news as what it is, good news mate, parliament have finally approved plans.
T.H.F.Chris
Jvd, I am passionate about Spurs, after all I have supported the club since I was 8 or 9 years old in 1950-51, and yes I remember with affection the hey days of the Nicholson era, and vaguely remember some of the era when Nicholson was actually playing in the Arthur Rowe team along with Alf Ramsey. I realize we went through dark times under Scholar and Sugar and were for a time in financial distress, until ENIC came along. The thing that frustrates me about their tenure however, is that we made gradual progress, which culminated in the CL qualification and getting to the QF under Redknapp, failed to build on this success, and have gradually regressed back to from whence we came, and are now in 6th place, and just qualifying for the EL, by the skin of our teeth. There seems to be no apparent drive and ambition to halt this regression, and to get back up there where we were 4 years ago. It would be understandable if we were genuinely seriously financially constrained, but with Joe Lewis's considerable wealth, it appears we should be one relatively short step from competing, if not with City, Chelsea, Utd, or now it seems Arsenal, mainly due to the fact that missed the opportunity during an era of "cheap money" and have failed for 14 years to build a stadium, to improve revenue streams etc. but surely it should ring alarm bells when the likes of Everton, with Bill Kenwright's very limited funds, finish above us. Regarding assessing players, can anybody in all honesty not admit that we should have been entitled to expect more from the likes of Soldado and Lamela given the huge fees paid for them, and the mediocre at best contributions from the rest of the 7, with the exception of Eriksen who did well in a first season. It may seem negative to comment on the shortcomings of the team, but I am sorry, but without notable improvement by 2 or 3 key signings, I just can't believe that we will improve. I also think that we are in danger of getting carried away over Pochittino, who after all has never managed a big club, and never won anything as a coach. He will be on a very steep learning curve, and he is after all an unknown quantity. We will have to see.
Frank
Regarding new signings, and our ability to afford those likely to improve us, there is of course another way. Everton narrowly missed out on CL qualification, by filling key positions with loaned players in Lukaku, Barry and the lad from Barcelona all making a considerable difference. As well as helping the club, it gives fringe players at bigger clubs opportunities for games. I disagree with the rule that allows loans in the PL, but while it is in place, we should perhaps look at taking advantage of it. One thing is for sure, we can't afford to continue on our current downward path to finish further and further behind the best teams in the league.
Frank
Colinlee, who do you see in our current club being able to play wide and provide assists for the forwards.
Thats Entertainment
Good posts Colin, sensible assessment of where ENIC have taken us. Problem is, as I am sure you'll agree, 5th place and no trophies is good enough, personally I don't see any difference between that and 8th, they need to move us on to the next level to make anyone happy. Losing Jan will not help, he is a top for player for sure and one we want to build around not sell on - so he'll be at Barca next year.

Frank I am probably about a year younger than you and well I remember the double and the great players. I used to take great pride in once having never lost a final at Wembley and our great record in FA Cups. Would love to have that feeling of pride again. But I have learned (through many medical journeys) to temper my passion for Spurs with the fact that I have no control over them other that to stop buying their product (shirts etc.) and thus not supporting the ENIC machine. But no matter how hard I try I cannot stop watching them play. I hope for all us "older" fans, we get another chance to "feel the pride". COY Pochettino
jvd
Sorry Frank I have rechecked my birthdate and I was 9 in 60 so I must be more like 8 or 9 year younger. Same feeling though. The double was when I started following Spurs. In those days we listened on the BBC to the game. Still hoping we are both around for the next double.
jvd
Nice post jvd, don't remember double but was born in 61, my claim to fame!!

I think ENIC choose not to take us forward that quickly, Joe Lewis is worth some £2.4 billion, Ambramovich £6.4b (good google facts). But you are right about TE management being our only realistic route to success and that's an area ENIC haven't impressed me. AVB, Sherwood just the most recent failures; Poch really has to buck the trend, it won't be acceptable if they keep choosing unproven managers who can't cut it. Don't get me wrong I'm 100% behind Poch and ENIC this season, but will be 100% against them if he doesn't do it.

I can see him wanting to go, and I can see Barca bidding but I don't think it will be anywhere near as much as Levy wants. Levy will point to Luis going for£50m, Vertonghen is 10 times the defender Luis is and equally as good going forward. The rumoured £22m ain't going to cut it.

Well I think we can surely say Paulinho has been poor all WC. He has shown us nothing to suggest he is anything more than average. No way has he shown to be a 17m player. I also do see him being part of Poch plans, his game will not be suited to Poch way unless he has a complete change of playing style.

If a good offer comes in then I would sell. I don't think he will come back full of confidence either.

Brazil have been average at best, the adrenalin and Neymar kept them going, but they have been found out.

There you go, Hoddle just mentioned Paulinho, not having a touch of the ball, he is lost.
BigSpursFan
That's Entertainment-not sure Brazil are better than England, wouldn't say there is much between them.
BigSpursFan
David luiz must be the worst player at the WC, he gives away yet another goal, world class more like world class flop, and whats with hes long balls? And hes the most expensive defender. All about money and location. I cant take football seriously any more. Shame a game I use to play and love. Its gone GAGA now, robben world class player, but also a world class cheat and diver but its accepted.

tarkan mardinCOYS
Paulinho in that last run showed me how technically weak he is for a Brazilian. The defender wouldn't let him through and he made no attempt to do any skill to try and beat the defender, so predictable. Brazilians of past would be so skillful around the area, go either side, they didn't have a weak foot, they were so skillful, these Brazilians are not, especially Paulinho

Highgatespur
ColinLee when I talk about loans, I am not talking specifics, just using Lukaku and Barry and the Barca lad at Everton as an example. Of course i wouldn't have wanted Barry at Spurs, and maybe Chelsea wouldn't have loaned us Lukaku, but all I am saying is that loan players can fill problem positions if you can't afford, or in our case, refuse to, or pretend you can't afford to buy the required players. The loan system is there, for now, and as such we should use it for our benefit. Incidentally access to, and the cost of borrowing money was far easier 10-12 years ago before "the crash" than it is now. That was when Arsenal borrowed to build the Emirates, Utd extended Old Trafford, Sunderland built the Stadium of Light etc etc. unfortunately we missed the boat and until the CPO decision made in the last few days, have suffered at least 10 years of limited revenue, as a result of missing the proverbial boat. I agree with T.H.Chris re ENIC's ability, or comittment, or willingness, to invest at the level necessary to take us any further forward from a football point of view. We are a football club, not an addition to a business tycoon*'s property portfolio, or an investment to be prepared for an extremely profitable sale, this means that we will never be allowed to really progress on the pitch, it is too expensive, and unlikely to produce a tangible return when the sale happens. Far better for a non football person owner, to ensure that we retain PL status, and operate a tight frugal ship, at minimal cost, therefore maximising the eventual profit. We are not owned, like some clubs, by people who wish to polish their egos, by running a successful football club and winning trophies. We can mock, and envy, and cast doubts on those that spend their money to this end, accusing them of criminal activity or whatever else comes into our heads, but the fact remains that these owners win trophies, and we will never emulate them, under the current ownership regime. We always settle for second, or third best, whether it is in the transfer market, or in the recruiting of managers, pleading poverty as the stock excuse for lack of success.
Frank
One of the more impressive PL players in this WC has been Ron Vlar the Aston Villa CB with Holland. He is a pure and simple defender, no frills, no delusions that he is a "ball player" or is "creative", he understands, and accepts, that he is a defender, he sticks to his disciplines, wins it in the air, gets his tackles in, gets his blocks in, uses his size and strength, and operates a "you will not pass me, and stay stood up" philosophy, and would add some muscle and solidity to our back 4, something we lacked all last season. He is like Michael Dawson with some pace, positional sense, and a functioning football brain. He has shown that with decent players around him he is a competent defender, rather than trying to survive the Alamo alone every game, in the Villa back 4. Villa are skint, Vlar is entering his last year contractuly, and a decent bid would shift him, Lerner would no doubt be chuffed to get him off the wage bill, and surely the player would jump at the chance to better himself. This is precisely the type of situation we should look to exploit to our advantage.
Frank
Oops! Yes Highgate, my thoughts were drowned by all the negativity here to have omitted Verts in my list. At least we have 1/4 of our squad sorted....over to Poch to discover the remaining 3/4. Hopefully Rose has come along leaps and bounds with double training sessions of last week, Lamela has mastered cockney, Soldado has score a hatful in training, Dawson is house hunting in Hull, Townsend's vision has been un-blinkered, ....... COYS!
Critical_Spur
Frank, Vlar was a complete numpty when Villa played us, if I remember correctly. I think he has been THE best PL based player, in my opinion. It'll be interesting to see how he plays in the new season. It's difficult as well as hazardous to judge players in just 7 games...

If there any Tottenham fans out there, or ENIC insiders, who can provide their fellow Spurs fans with details of the official revenue amount raised thus far to build the new stadium from any source, could you you please provide us with this information... The last I officially heard was when Sir Keith Mills (THFC director) told the press last summer "The new stadium can only go ahead when £350m funding is secured. To do that, the club need to sell the naming rights. “We don’t have that in place and that’s an integral part of the financing,” says Mills. “Once we get that, it’ll open up the rest of the funding.”... Can you hear the ENIC sing???

I personally think a few in that region is good money for Vertonghen, especially if you take into consideration his strops and uncertainty of whether he was committed to the club recently. I also believe he had a pretty bad season, at least by the standard that's expected by him anyway.

It's understandable that a desire for consistency exists, but I couldn't possibly see how a turnover of players in defence would cause any harm. Does anyone believe that we have a string of defensive players that understand each other and work well as a unit? With Dawson leaving aswell, we have no CB partnership.

I think with the money we would recieve from the sale would allow Poch to approach his targets and strengthen the team in the way he see's fit. This is obviously what we want the manager to be able to do, unless ofcourse you have little faith in his transfer policy.

I can't see us finishing anywhere near top four next season, which means players like Jan and Lloris are going to force a move out within the next few seasons, in the same way that Berbatov, Modric and Bale had done prior. If the club are unwilling to spend big and improve on what they have, perhaps we should sell big and invest in some young talent. Plugging the gaps in those weak areas like LB, CB and ST with potential superstars (I'm going to name Rodriguez, Ginters and Morata as examples here). I can't see massive expenditure with the stadium plans now going ahead, so perhaps we're better off preparing for the future and moulding a team from young talented minds, giving them several years to develop a style of football (something we clearly don't have anymore).

Dublin, this is a Spurs forum. If there was a championship for the most fickle, moaning, negative fans we would win it every year. Not just here but also at WHL, AVB got slated for stating the obvious.

Dublin - know how you feel and at times i stay away. We have also seen many interesting posters leave or banned and it is a shame. However, it is better to see the negativity from some as a different opinion and at the end of the day, this is a forum and people need to be able to express their views, with others disagreeing and that is where the debate comes from. the only frustration is those with no balance and the same monotonous views on every topic. Arsenal of course raised the funding for the stadium first and then invited bids for naming rights. The Arsenal concept was, "we are building a state of the art brand new stadium, have raised the finance, would you like our stadium to be named after your company?" It's always the wrong was round with ENIC! When Levy made the bid for the OS his master plan was to knock half the stadium down and then rebuild it to create more atmosphere??? The porn barren without a highly expensive team of experts, (which THFC paid for not Joe Lewis) came up with the simple idea of building a new roof and retractable seating to create more atmosphere at a fraction of the cost! Just Watch WHUFC eclipse us, just like CFC and AFC...

I think that our defence was awful last year, however, lloris and vertonghen are class and must be kept. For now, with walker and naughton we are ok at right back. With rosé, bae and fryers we have back up at left back - but priority would be to get a number one left back. Then we get to CB. Verts is one and Chiriches needs this season to see. Love kaboul and Dawson, but one is injury prone and one is not good enough. So we need three new defenders in - largely covered by the Livermore / Dawson out funds. Such a shame we did not get Ashley cole in on a free - great left back, winning mentality this squad needs and experience to raise the whole squad.

Negative?...don't shoot the messengers...I'd love it if the the club were trying to build a team to compete at the top instead of just trying to separate as many fans from as much money as possible...it is sad really. But the club have it within their hands to turn it around...go out and buy a Lukaku, Ricardo Rodriguez and Griezmann type trio...only sell a couple of fringe players put some of the revenue they have taken from fans into the product, start showing some ambition...prove to the fans that the stadium isn't impacting transfers, make a statement of intent tell us they don't plan on selling once the stadium is completed and that the revenue will be used to build the strongest first team possible...the multi-millionaire Levy could stop taking a huge salary in comparison to most other PL chairman...there are so many things the club could do...I await the positive news with baited breath...the cynic in me tells me any positive news will be offset...in other words PR spin....

colinlee- not that strong an argument....a scatter gun recruitment of players to act a sop to the fans for selling the best player whilst getting rid of another 12 players almost under the radar...ambition to compete would have seen AVB get his LB amongst other things...Do these players want to play for Spurs? do any players? surely all ambitious players want CL and higher things..they work for a contract and most would leave instantly if they had a chance to go to Barca etc and earn mega wages and win things...the trick is keeping them playing well enough until those offers come in...and squeezing one more year out of them thus propelling us (once again!) towards the promised land...sell those two, bring in the 3 we need...pretty soon we're into gelling all over again...

So it's Sigurdson to Palace for a reported £8M, rumoured interest from Juventus for Paulinho, although reported Levy wants £25M for him. Rumours of Barca interest in Vertonghen persist, but still no news of bids, or advanced talks, re anybody coming in. Surely we are not kidding ourselves that the players who had a disappointing season last year, slipping to 6th and exiting both cups early as well as the EL v Benfica after the "nothing" group stages, against league 1 type opposition, are good enough without help. We quite obviously need some additional quality, and with almost everybody else kicking on, time is now of the essence if there is to be a meaningful pre-season, we seem season after season to miss out on this, and it shows when the season starts, and this season is likely to be a hard struggle to get back into contention for a top 4 place. So come on give us something to get just a little bit excited about, it's a bloody long window with nothing happening.

£20m for Paulinho has got to be taken, Levy will probably eek out £23m and very good money for a player short of confidence and not yet found, and not looking like he'll find form anytime soon. Good to hear we would turn down Barca's move for Verts, whether he'll stay or not we're yet to see but compared to last season (Bale) and Hugo has signed for another year I'm not hugely fussed about Verts.
T.H.F.Chris
colinlee- As you may recall I was one of the few voices who was left frustrated by the last window...the plaudits were all ringing around for Levy and Spurs 'investing' but most of those commentating were not close to the club and premature- they didn't wait for all the outs, they said things like sold 'Elvis and bought the Beatles' because that made good copy....the average lap it up....selling a symphony and buying a boyband wouldn't have had the same ring to it...You want balance? tell me why the club won't spend a penny of the revenue they take from fans on an annual basis on transfers?...
shedboy2
colinlee- you and I will have to disagree on this (again...;)..) ...there is another way to look at it....as I do. I wouldn't be saying the board lacked ambition if I thought they really had it...and I don't see re-cycling money for players as having ambition...far from it, it is a flawed strategy that guarantees reaching diminishing returns and ultimately failure...If the board go out and spend some money (new, I know you know what I'm talking about here) and try and improve on what we have but ultimately fail..fair play, I wouldn't and couldn't criticise them for trying and failing....but their priority is and has been the stadium, they have lost focus on football and it's costing us on the pitch...the stadium will generate fabulous wealth...for those that are already fabulously wealthy!....having philanthropic owner is just the stuff of dreams.

Pele10, There was a post on here a while back that suggested that approx £185M had been raised for the stadium build. Recent reports in the media now suggest that with the CPO decision granted, phase 2 and 3 of the build can proceed, nothing mentioned regarding naming rights.

Remember, THFC were invited by Mayor Boris Johnson to bid for the OS,most likely as nobody else except WHam were interested at the time. The THFC bid served to legitimise what was in fact a patently political issue regarding the legacy of the OS, once the games were complete. The Olympic committee insisted that the track remained. W.Ham will still have to convert the stadium for football use and implement removable seating if that is their wish, a cost that will roughly be between £150M and £190M, they will pay £15M up front and the rest will come from loans and subsidies which they will have to pay back. There are other caveats within the deal which will possibly preclude WHam selling the club within the next 10 years, or at the very least, make them unattractive to investors. In short, that deal is a bit of a mess, so I'm not sure where you are going with WHam over taking Spurs, they won't own their stadium, and they will be large amounts of debt, + third parties involved with any sale. As for Addidas, why would they want to give naming rights to WHam? is it just because they provide their kit? Addidas, have on their books, amongst many, giants such as Bayern Munich and Chelsea, wouldn't you think that they would rather provide naming rights to one of those teams instead of W.Ham? W.Ham's kit deal with Addidas is probably worth a similar amount as their deal with Swansea City, which is approx £1.5M per season. Our deal with Under Armor is worth approx £16M per season. That's a good deal for us considering the size of club we are. You can walk into Lilywhites Sports store in Central London, you will probably see Chelsea, Man U, Liverpool, Arsenal, and probably now City kits heavily merchandised, you'll also probably see RM, Barca, AC Milan, Bayern kits etc, but you won't see that many of the rest, including THFC or W.Ham, so having Addidas makes no difference unless you are an elite club.

. Shedboy, In the media today, City are poised to sign some defender from Porto Mangala, who I suspect not many outside of Portugal have heard of for approx £32M. Coupled with the Shaw to United fee, this explicitly presents the problem for Levy and THFC. If defenders who arn't even top class are now worth £30M+ and David Luis goes for £40M, how are we or anybody else 1) supposed to compete with that and 2) act quickly for decent ability level players before the elite clubs do their business?
Cleveland ARTSPURS
colinlee- in the interest of discretion I won't comment on the 'again' remark. As for avg'ing ENIC's tenure and league position over 14 years and comparing that to a failed regime...that'd be a pretty blunt instrument and not particularly accurate imo.. You can always look back a the success other clubs have 'enjoyed' during and (importantly) after ENIC have left. Or you can look at what ENIC is? Or you can look at the now...we've slipped two years running in the league and haven't spent a brass farthing of the money taken from fans for transfers in that time...

Cleveland- most football people will be all too familiar with who Mangala is...the ones who don't are the ones that were surprised at what a player Rodriguez was in the WC...as for competing with the 'Elite' clubs...we can't financially but we can still get very good players..they can't have them all! And most importantly we can still try...we were in the CL recently but failed to capitalise at all- no leveraging of the brand, marketing, player investment etc it was abysmal ...if we give up even trying to compete we may just as well all pack up, pick an elite club to 'support' and watch a European super-league!
shedboy2
Frank, agree with you on Vlar. Solid, consistent player in a very poor team. Sigurdsson is surplus so if we can find a deal that makes sense for all parties, it should be done. One of Paulinho or Dembele also needs to go as we just have too many players in CMF. Now, even if we were to sell 2 players, we probably still need to shift another 2 or 3 before we can even bring in one player. You could sell Dawson and bring in Vlar or Schar or Lascelles or Lang, but then what. Players still need to go before we address the needs of the club (Vlar for Dawson is likely an upgrade, but still has not addressed any needs in the club). As Dawson and Hudd showed 2 seasons ago when AVB came in, players don't have to go if they don't wish to. Seemed to me BAE was an obvious early exit to QPR. Haven't heard anything on that. Haven't seen anything to suggest he is wanted at Spurs either. But he's under contract to us so he's our problem. WE can't afford the wages of the top, top players, so we have to wait for the next level of players to see if they sort out a desirable CL spot or whether we, at the deadline, represent the best deal they will be getting. It's not easy. I still think we have too large of a squad. We should be going with 22 senior players, 3 or 4 kids that need playing time at the next level with three or four other "kids" out on loan. That way we can always pull the trigger on a deal without worrying about selling players. WE are also dealing with a market where the tone has been set by players like Shaw going for 27M GBP perhaps raising to 34M GBP for a LB who neither scores nor provides assists. He's a prospect. Nothing suggests he is the next Baines or Cole. He may be, but then again, so may Davies. The monies talked about are ridiculous and one look at the transfers that have already been completed tells the tale. The bottom clubs are all bringing in aging experience at higher wages than they wish but for no transfer fee. Liverpool have already spent 40M and will be spending the Suarez money on top of that, Chelsea and United are at 65M and City and Arsenal are also keeping pace. FFPR have no impact (it's just a fine) since the cost of spending more than you are permitted is that you have to pay more. Should more appropriately be labelled Financial Unfair Play Tax. Status quo has not changed. Irrespective of CL, there are still 5 teams in the EPL that will pay more on wages than we will. We will again wait and see who wants to come at the last after we see who we can convince to leave. COYS
peterballb
shedboy2, none of the "leveraging" you mention is going to do one thing to make us pay higher wages. Willian went to Chelsea because Chelsea finally stumped the cash. He makes more there than we would pay. Simples. Yes, we can compete (which is what we have done since Jol's last 2 seasons. We are in the mix. In the conversation. There were lots of guys in the conversation as the next Spurs manager. Look at all of the CV's of the top 15 candidates. Now look at our selection. Look at the CV again. Adjust your expectations accordingly. My only hope at this point is that we qualify for the group stages of Europa. If not, forget about who is coming. Look to how many must go to get the squad to a size appropriate for 1 game a week. Pochettino primarily used 13 players last season. COYS
peterballb
it's the same every year...bloated squad...blah blah...despite the fact the we have sold more than we have bought for several years...when the new coach comes in....it's the same old nonsense about fitness..they are just excuses! We like most PL teams will have a staff of 35-50 players only 25 will make the 1st team squad...no we can't afford the 50m players (even with the mysterious war chest we've been rumored to have ever since we've been skint) but we need to compete or fall further....
shedboy2
Cleveland ARTSPURS, absolutely regarding the kit deals. We were with Puma because they were willing to give us more. We are now with UA because they are paying us more than any others were willing (yes Adidas, Nike, Umbro included). With UA, we are their flagship team in the PL. In fact, we are one of the top football clubs in the world that UA is outfitting. That means we are the focus. Not 20 other clubs and then us. COYS
peterballb
Peter/Frank I am not as confident on Vlar as you two. Yes he had a brilliant WC but he was playing in a back 3/5, having two other defenders to cover you would allow many players to excel, back in the prem he won't get that luxury and likely go back to the form he has shown for Villa, no better than Dawson..

Also knowing Levy Vlar is a none starter, anyone who has has a good WC will be overpriced, we won't buy him.
T.H.F.Chris
@Shedboy, Mangala at 23 and Shaw at 19 are just prospects, yet they are being sold for £30M+. Factor in the wages, and we now have a situation where not only are the elite players out of our reach, but also the prospects. Elite teams, hoover up the best talent, at all levels, the best of those go into the squad, the rest either sit and waste their careers away, or go out on loan season after season. In the mean time, the talent pool for the rest diminishes. It is not properly regulated, so elite clubs do what they want. Even if Levy had £50M that he wanted to spend for THFC every season, we wouldn't get those players. I agree that there are good players that we should be targeting, but they are getting harder and harder to acquire. I suspect Rodriguez now, will probably be in the sights of a CL team, he will want it and also his agent will too. All we can do, is to sign the players that fall through the cracks after the Elite club feeding frenzy has abated, and hope that they have missed a few stars. Last season, according to many on here Pauli, Chadli, Soldado, Lamela were all good players, so we do sign good players, but the ability gap between the good and the best players and the fact that we can't sign enough good/great players at any one time makes life difficult, it's just the way it is unfortunately. we just need to sign the best players we can get for the positions we actually need, and hope for the best. The team dynamic is vital. BTW, I suspect a Super league will happen in the near future, will THFC be a part of it?
Cleveland ARTSPURS

@Peter, the UA deal is a great deal for us, UA are a company on the rise, they actually have a larger US market share for apparel than does Addidas. They are second only to Nike in the US and are now moving into sports footware. I don't understand some people's opposition to this deal.

Shedboy2, as you say presumably Baldini is presumably working hard to source the players we need. That is exactly what bothers me, if the players he sources are of the same caliber, and degree of use to us, as those he sourced last summer then God help us. I am only amazed that following that debacle he is still in post, 7 signings and only one, Christian Eriksen, making a meaningful contribution to the team. Yes it was a first season for players unfamiliar with the PL, but that applied to Eriksen equally, and he coped. Were the rest a)The right players for our needs, and 2) were several of them over priced, and not really good enough, particularly Soldado and Lamela who together cost £50M+ and contributed nothing. Unless he gets it spectacularly right this summer, Baldini should be labelled incompetent and sent packing. You are absolutely right colinlee, what was needed was 2 or 3 quality players for obviously weak positions, not somebody acting like a kid in a sweet shop, paying inflated prices for moderate, or worse, players. The problem now will be shifting some of them, to free up squad positions, for those we have desperate need for.
Frank
In the Villa team last season Ron Vlar was like Custer at the Little Big Horn, on his own defensively surrounded by a bunch of kids, with the inevitable result, they narrowly avoided relegation for the second successive season. As he proved in the WC, give him some decent players around him, and play him in an appropriate system, and he is a solid, disciplined, big, hard pure defender, with no airs or graces or frills, he just does what he gets paid for.
Frank
I am genuinely baffled by those who maintain Spurs won't finish anywhere near the top four. We finished 6th last season just shy of fifth after a poor season when most of our stars under performed. How then if the new guy brings a higher level of performance will spurs do worse? And where are the other teams that are going to push us so far down the league? City still look the strongest, Mourinhio looks like he's head for the self destruct button this season, Liverpool have lost their talisman and are doing a spurs on it by throwing millions around Europe. Arsenil have bought a winger oh no! United have far bigger problems then we do so I don't see a phoenix like rise up the table from them and Everton will not be bothering the top half of the league this season. As it stands Spurs will finish fourth.

So Ade misses pre season AGAIN. Suppose this time it is not his fault. Still would have preferred ALL players were there so Poch can make some assessments
BigSpursFan
Highgate, hope it doesn't mean they have to quarantine the whole squad!

I'll put my money on now for an England v Germany final in Russia in 4 years. Algeria beating the USA in to third place... Why not? As for next season, a Spurs FA cup and EL double... Why not? As long as we don't all come down with food poisoning or Malaria or something, on a crucial last day of the season, we might even finish 4th! Why not? We could of course be complete rubbish and get relegated.... Oh dear, what a life! Yid Army!
MAN ON!
shame if ade is missing we need him for the start of the season. now the WC has ended let the games begin. COYS

Thanks Highgate and BSF. Obviously I have no knowledge on these ailments. Hope he recovers as per the reports and raring to go for the start of the season or as soon as.

I was thinking, if Levy's short of a few quid, we should all chip in for at least one really expensive player who can not only play but also gives a God damn... I'm skint myself but I'll start it off with a fiver.... The Save Our Spurs Fund, (SOS), is a worthy cause, don't ya think? Oh Ledley, Ledley........... COYS!
MAN ON!
BSF, yes, Baldini's been conspicuous by his absence. I wonder if Poch was bought on the back of Baldini retained his talent scout?! Personally, I expect Baldini to resign (again) and be allowed to leave. It would've been triple whammy for Levy had he accepted his resignation.

Critical_spur I have nothing but admiration for Pulis who is a great motivator and shrewed tactician, who continually punch bloody noses against teams on paper; should beat his team but I'm talking about Siggy, not Pulis. Siggy should imo be looking to play for a team that will compete for top 6 and a chance to win silverware on a regular basis. I'm a Siggy fan and still feel he can still contribute in a Spurs shirt, but I'm also realistic enough to know that sometimes it's better to move on to better their careers. If Siggy wants to go to Palace than great, I just feel his talent should be rewarded with a team that will realistically compete for silverware. I don't see it with Palace. COYS!

messi great with barce and poor with argentina. siggy is in the same catagory
123spurs
a.k.a.james1spurs, perhaps therein lies your answer??! Apart from may be 4/5 players at spurs, how many in your opinion will fit in a top 6/7 team? Of what I have seen of Siggy, he IS or has been used as a utility player. Don't get me wrong, I like all our signings of last 3 years, but assuming no one had come in for him when we signed him, he'd still be at Swansea......and where are they now?....below Palace! I know what you are saying, but many of our players are just NOT top 6 players.....or their potential has not been developed. there is a general consensus that our squad needs to be trimmed in order to accommodate new (vital) signings. I'd wouldn't be overly upset if Siggy, Pauli and a.n.other are sacrificed. Unfortunately, at the right price Levy will deal. Hope Poch has a say in ALL transfers. COYS!

Could never in a million years support the Germans against anybody, but there again I am of a different generation to most of you, so I have my reasons, and my memories.
Frank
The player of the competition was not Messi for me, but another Argentina player in Mascherano, he gave a DMFer master class all the way through.
Frank
not the same class but who said vlaar was class before the WC
123spurs
James, having re-read your post, sorry, I think I misconstrued as far as I agree he should be playing for the top 6 aspiring (as opposed to established) team. But, I still wouldn't write off Palace for next season!!! They have the momentum. I look at the bottom half of the PL and don't see many teams capable of progressing. I'd say watch out for Newcastle (again) and Palace.
Critical_Spur
Frank, it was just a football team man. Not a bunch of Nazi war criminals.... I have very lovely and kind German friends. Our world, in the west, thankfully, has moved on. It's football, not war. I personally was just supporting the better footballing side, that's all.

Messi was not bad but he didn't stand out. It's often the case with the so called stars. He, like Neymar and Suarez, cannot alone, carry a team on their shoulders. The Germans played as a unit and the team was the star.

Posting here after a long time.... Now the world cup is over, we can concentrate on the real football - Premier League.

As usual, looks like, we are going to have one of those windows - where we stay late on the final day of the window and hope for a miracle.

One week to go to preseason tour, we have done nothing - outs or ins except for Livermore. May be its reasonable to give Poch to assess the squad before making a decision. But we are fast running out of credible targets with kind of crazy transactions happening in market.

Time to get rid of some defensive dross we have & get some proper defenders.

I agree with the theory that after England beat Germany 5-1 in Berlin, they reorganized their football system. Started a squad of young players which stayed together from Youth, U21 full internationals.. to world champions. England have not done this, and results in humiliation and earliest exit from the tournament. Come on all you people at FA wembley office, etc. Get yourselves into gear, and follow the Germans system...

Wouldn't consider selling Vertonghen (unless £50 mill', Luiz type offer came on the table)...I'd make him captain and tell him he is integral to my 3 centrebacks....3,5,2..system, that I wish to play this season. AS for Adebayor....One Big Pain. Let's hope he now doesn't wish to go back to Africa....for the ANC qualifying and Finals....this Autumn and Winter.

Cleveland ARTSPURS, Manchester City do not own the City of Manchester Stadium, but that did not stop Manchester City Football club being bought out by one of the richest living men on the planet. And look at City now.. Champions of England! No one can ever own the City of Manchester stadium stadium or the Olympic stadium! West ham and Manchester City have both leased their stadiums on very long leases and the City owner is currently paying for the stadium capacity to go up to 55,000 out of his own purse, because he understands that more bums on seats equals more revenue! West Ham United FC are a very attractive football club to the next Abramovich, Sheikh Mansour, Khaldoon Al Mubarak, John Henry, because they are buying into Olympic History at a stadium already named Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. All the potential new owner will have to do is to make David Sullivan an offer for his 55% shares in the club that he cant refuse and they will control and be majority share holders in WHUFC and then will quite simply pump as much money into the playing side of the club as they so choose... As for your stating that the conversion costs are up to 190 million. This is not correct. The actual cost increased from 90 million to 130 million. Tiny money for West Ham United to invest in a state of the art stadium... The next West Ham United majority share holder will wipe out that debt in the blink of an eye. The next majority share holder of WHUFC will not be buying the club to sell it on for vast profits like Joe Lewis is doing without bringing success on the pitch, he will be buying into WHUFC to bring the club success on the pitch, just like the new owners of City, Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool are doing!!!
Pele10
I can't see Jan going. We're not exactly blessed in that dept. Dawson not suitable for Pocho's highline pressing tactic, Kaboul injury woes, Fryers is still learning and Capoue as a makeshift CB. We need Jan and another CB. Vlad is the only suitable back up which is not enough. COYS!

Roll on the good times, pre-season just around the corner!!
Slurms McKenzie
@Pele10, The City of Manchester deal and the Olympic stadium deal are completely different in complexity. The City of Manchester stadium was always earmarked as a venue for Manchester City football club, and the deal was done much more efficiently that the Olympic stadium deal. Manchester City could have bought COMS, there was talk that they would, however they chose to lease, they have since renegotiated giving them the naming rights. They are committed to a £1B redevelopment of the area around the stadium; this gives them a huge amount of leverage with the council, that's Manchester City council which is only 1 government body. A W.Ham owner wouldn't have that luxury in E. London. There are more 3rd parties involved in the OLympic stadium deal, any potential owner will have to pay LLDC an indetermined amount if the stadium is sold within 10 years, and the removable seating option is not the preferred choice for nearly all football stadiums. The conversion costs are listed on BBC business as running between £150-£190M, not exactly "pin money". As for the next Abramovich or John Henry buying them, who knows, it could just as well be a Carson Yeung, Venkys, Vincent Tan or maybe even someone like Eggert Magnusson who nearly bankrupted them first time around. As for Adidas, well they just signed a £75M per year kit deal with Man U, so do you honestly still think that West Ham are high on their list of priorities? There is also the FFP regulations now in effect which prevent owners from pumping money into their team without restriction. This further reduces the attraction of buying a PL club. Lots for any new owner at W.Ham to contend with, not exactly attractive, but they will have a stadium that they don't actually own which will more than likely have to remain named as the Queen Elizabeth Olympic stadium in order to preserve the Olympic legacy that the LLDC fought so hard to conserve in the first place and was the reason that W.Ham were the preferred bidder.
