The Numbers Game

The Numbers Game

Last season we started with what we were told was a strong squad but only one left back and boy did we suffer as a result.

Its a simple numbers game, two players for each position, but its one we seem to struggle to understand. Two players we are currently trying to get rid off are Sigurdsson and Dawson, their situations could not be more different. In Siggi's case you could say he is unlucky but the simple fact is we have too many central midfield players.

You can argue for and against each of them but the reality is we need to reduce the numbers. There is no point in having a player on your books if he is never going to play or is only going to play out of position. But if we have an oversupply of players in central midfield the opposite is true in central defence. Kaboul's injuries mean you can't rely on him, Cliriches is an accident waiting to happen every time he goes on the pitch. That just leaves Vertonghen, we are trying to get him to sign a new contract but no guarantee he will, and Dawson.

So as a bare minimum we need one more central defender and hope that Kaboul stays fit, Cliriches stops giving the ball away in our third, or Fryers makes it as a central defender. If we can bring in two decent centre halves then Dawson becomes surplus. But that's not what seems to be happening, rather like BAE last year we seem to be trying to dump a player without having secured a replacement. Last season Dawson played more games than any of our other central defenders, not because he was first choice but because he was fit. That's the reality of the Premier league, its why the numbers game is important.

I still don't see how we could have a better fourth or fifth choice CB then Dawson. I'd keep him and sign one more good CB which would gives us proper competition int eh CB department and also keep a safety valve for Kabouls knees!
A decsion then needs to be made about Fryers - is he a CB or a LB and then stick with it, the last thing we need in the squad is another young player who is a Jack of all trades and a master of none!

Certainly the decision to sell caulker last season was Bizzare when you consider we need five CB the year previous and got fourth, with only four last seaosn and two of them absent through injury and the other here in body but not spirit it was ultimately what cost us in the league - not the strikers!

jod not really an inside into much to be frank. Also your analysis of CHIRICHES (please also not spelling) is dismal and suffice to say you have never defended in your life before... But that's just my opinion... We are not "getting rid" of anyone, it's a simple factor of buying and selling players. I'm not into witchcraft but if you could also let us know who and how our players will get injured in the future that would be great! As for BAE he was a disaster waiting to happen which has clearly been proven. Danny Rose was given a run to prove himself and we had Naughton, Fryers and Verts for cover so can't really complain much there. As for the obvious current 2-3 months discussion regarding this topic I agree we need a LB and at least 1 CB....

It is funny how the difference of opinion varies so much, even between us fans. For me Chiriches is a footballer who may make a mistake but he's intention is to retain possession 99% of the time. Dawson for me is a typical old fashioned English defender, one who gives possession back to the oppostion almost every time he has the ball. He is a row Z, if in doubt put it out player, which he needs to be because his footballing ability (ball control) is awful. This is part of the problem with England too. Football has evolved since the 70's only the English mentality and style hasn't caught up.

I think it was Brendan Rodger who once said "I will not discipline a player who makes a mistake trying to do the right thing".

Part of the problem was that Naughton was deemed cover for both LB and RB (whilst good at neither), plus Vertonghen was deemed both CB and LB, and Kaboul was somehow deemed a CB option, when he had no guarantee of ever regaining fitness and form. Those all screwed up the numbers. Add on top of that, Rose, who was declared our LB, and did not really deliver, and Walker got injured when it really mattered. Our management then flooded our midfield with such a confusing array of midfield players. I do think that simplicity is key. This is why the title is often won by sides with a settled core team. It only works if your core have no ambiguity in where they play. Yes, the priority is LB and CB - Davies and Caulker for me. Caulker could give us what Dawson gives us whilst adding youth and on the ascendancy in terms of his ability. Caulker is not the finished article, but we need the sort of stability that he could give us.

Mix26 - Chiriches is a disaster waiting to happen, the number of times he gives the ball away in dangerous positions through a combination of trying to play football in the wrong areas of the pitch and a simple lack of physical strength is beyond belief. Naughton is a right back, after last season do you still not understand that playing a right footer at left back doesn't work. Vertonghen is happy playing left back for Belgium but not for us. We could have used Fryers last season, mostly we didn't. If the management aren't confident in him then he's not cover. The whole point about having two players for each position is you don't know where injuries will occur, so you have to try and cover all your bases. Buying and selling players may be simple but we keep getting it wrong. We're trying to sell Dawson to Hull before bringing anyone in, as I said if we sell him we need two. What are the chances we won't get them and will start the season light ?

It's funny that a few seasons ago we didn't try to sign Vermaelan because we said he was not tall enough only for a few seasons later to sign Chiriches??? we only had to see the West Ham games where they punted it to Carroll with Chiriches trying to mark him and funny enough we lost all 3 games!! he is not tall enough or good or physical enough, Daws is too slow in the high line game so it leave's Verts and Kaboul(sicknote) .... why are we not getting Caulker back? why not go for Audeweid the good Belgian? he can play along the whole back line! Another strange one is paying £30 million for Lamela when Konoplanka or Griezmann are going for a lot less, crazy decisions from Levi who is being guided by the useless Baldini. Same old Spurs getting there players in last minute when they should be signed so they can all do pre-season training together! dear o dear.

Yiddy in the long term Chiriches may well prove to be an outstanding CB but last season he suffered due to a steep learning curve, unsettled defensive line ups and unsettled defensive partner. However all these factors came into play last season because of the lack of cover in our back line, which meant players were getting injured because of excissive playing time covering other injuries. I am not suggesting that Dawson should be number one of the team sheet but as JOD rightly says he played more then the rest because he was fit. As poor as his footballing ability is he would still be useful in early Europa games, cups rounds and weaker league opposition to allow for adequate rotation, rest and recovery for the rest of the defesive squad. I don't see selling dawson and replacing him solving any of our problems as in my mind we still need another CB. if our transfers this window are to be limited to only 2or 3 I would rather just sign a new CB retain Dawson for cover and concentrate on LB and LW. If we can keep our favoured back line injury free then Dawson's game time will be limited and he may well want out in January or next June at which point we can repalce him or promote from within.

I am not really looking into whether Dawson is due a testimonial or not - IMO he has earned plenty at THFC and time the club went away from being sentimental... I'd prefer if Kaboul went... Unlike you jod, I'd prefer a Chriches and Verts centre defence in the absence of any additions... hopefully Veljkovic will be given a proper run out in the first this year... I don't really care about the shirts nor the colour of the logo - I did when I was a teenager ! No longer a teenager... Looking forward to Seattle - calamity Rose to have his best game ever at LB for Spurs ?

Mix - you may well say some truth on Dawson given his age and the high line tactics that we are increasingly employing, but selling Dawson now without a replacement is also defensive suicide. Caulker could cover what Dawson gives us, but I'd still keep Daws just in case the same thing happens again - Kaboul's leg falls off, Chiriches manages 14 games in a season again, and Vertonghen is required to play emergency LB. Daws would be content to stay and fight for place - or rather wait for the others to drop like flies. As Highgate correctly says, it would be better if Kaboul goes rather than Daws. At the very least you know that you can get a season out of Daws. At least you know that Daws does not want to leave. If Kaboul was fit, he would have run his contract down and left anyway. Kaboul showed last season that getting back to some degree of fitness did not mean that he retained his form. He is not ledley in that respect. As for Chiriches, I am not a fan - BUT he had too few games to judge on, and hopefully he has finally adapted. There is no doubt that he prefers the ball on the ground, and is very accomplished on the ball.

jod firstly I disagree with your Chiriches analysis if I had not made it clear already, obviously u cant even spell the guy's name right but hell what do I know. You assume a players ability to play a position depends on what foot he chooses to use. What sort of cover are u expecting? Please enlighten us of the team who has the privilege to have an outstanding cover who does the job better if not the same as the first choice. We sold Caulker because Dawson would not leave, it's simple really as currently Dawson is on his way out and I would assume we are working on his cover as we speak.

TonyRich I don't know that about kaboul and its unfair to suggest it. I would however be reasonably happy starting the season with Vertoghen, Kaboul, Caulker, dawson and Chiriches as our CB options to allow either Dawson or Kaboul to leave would mean that Fryers is a proper CB and he steps up or the Velljkovic is a proper CB and steps up but either way a sustained campaign across European FA and League cups as well as 38 league games plus a smatterign of international games means the squad needs 5 CBs!

As for the shirt. The problem is not the red. It is that there are too many clashing colours on it. If the logo was pink or orange, the same problem would occur. Navy + yellow + red on white is too busy. We all remember the purely white 'n' navy shirts as the best. Why is it that the Wimbledon tournament can demand plain white outfits, yet we cannot demand a navy/black sponsor...? It is not a major issue for me, merely slightly annoying... Just do not expect me to buy the shirt... Just as I did not buy the one with the revolting yellow sides...

Mix26 - we sold Caulker because we could not guarantee him first team football in a world cup year when England were not sorted at the back. Plus we got a good offer for Caulker. I wanted Caulker to stay, but I cannot complain about the logic - barring the fact that 3 CBs + Kaboul were clearly not enough - and Fryers clearly was not ready to be considered.

Mix26 - there is a "better replacement" in the Championship, and he is called "Caulker". But Chiriches was no replacement for even Caulker as he did not play enough. It is not that straightforward. Carroll dominates pretty much anyone in the air!

SLURMS I'm not saying sell Dawson I'm just highlighting his game. AVB wanted to play a high line, as does Poch, this simple means Dawson is not a suitable player for this formation/style. If we play Dawson in a high line against the likes of Alexis Sanchez, Stirling or any other player with pace I'll guarantee the mess will be worse than what Carroll did with Chiriches in the aerial battle. We need to play a system that suits the players available, if Dawson is the only fit CB then for those games highline shouldn't be an option, or we should replace Dawson with a player who can handle the high line..

Yiddy I can of get that we are arguing both sides of the same coin and yes obviously its horses for courses ahen it come sto defensive formations. My point is that in the absence of two CB signings I don't see Dawson as 4th or 5th choice that much of a catastrophe. I also would not be a fan of the high defensive line as it squeezes the space available to our midfield and also removes the safety option of playing the ball back to your defenders as they are more or less part of the action and get closed down far quicker (again part of Chiriches problems last year). As well as leaving us very vunerable to quick counter attacks and runs from deep!

Slurms I'd be happy to have Dawson as 4th/5th choice, the question is would he be happy with that, if yes then keep the guy and as you mentioned earlier, he is great for earlier Europa games, or championship or lower cup games.
Kaboul cannot be relied upon due to his injury record, Verts needs to buck up as he was dreadful in many games last year. Having said that I would like to see Verts and Chiriches given a run of games in the middle.

Caulker certainly isn't the great white hope and long term I would only see his as part of our back up Cb pairing the question who makes up the other three spots. If Verts is in then great paly him beside a resurgent Kaboul and we'ed have one hell of a CB pairing but if we get a repeat of last season from both then its car crash central! Chiriches plays better ont eh left side of cb? as does caulker? as does Verts. Kaboul and dawson are righties so if daws goes we need a right sided CB who can run fast and is strong in the air but can also play the ball on the ground and has a good awareness of teh players around him. When you stack it all up Bony is really the best option for CB!.

I think some people see defending as an art form and others judge it on what they see on the pitch. As en example, it's easy to see where Chiriches has overplayed it or is adjusting to the pace of the Prem. The problem is fans don't see the subtle things like him using his brain to snuff out an attack before it's even started. It's the same as getting a toe in and nicking the ball versus a full blooded tackle. Obviously, the fans enjoy the latter but the purists enjoy the former. They also don't see the subtle things like when the ball is out on the right wing and Dawson moves out 10 yards for no reason and then sees the ball go over his head. That stuff you can't teach and guys like Rio, Carvalho, King etc just wouldn't have moved over in the first place. They would have held their ground and made the cross impossible.

Must admit, I would love to replay last season and for every minute on the pitch that Dawson had give it to Caulker. We would have been much better off in my opinion and I would guess that Caulker would have been in Brazil. Personally, I will be disappointed if Dawson is still here at end of August. He doesn't suit Poch's style of play from what I can tell.

I also don't agree with the comment in the article about having one LB. Fryers was 21 years old and proved each time he played that he was equal of not better than Rose. He just got treated badly. Neither may not make it but they are somewhat protected as they are homegrown. In fact 5 of our 8 defenders are homegrown (Walker, Naughton, Dawson, Rose, Fryers) and it creates a problem. Poch can't just go out and buy the best defenders in the world as he'll end up with too many foreigners or too little homegrown whichever way you look at it.

Agreed spursbynature. Like Ade or not, if we can get him firing we're better with him than without, unless we can get a GENUINE replacement (which we probs won't) then for me he stays. Whether people like it or not he's one of our best players, you don't play for Real Madrid (even only on loan) if you don't have talent. Just got to keep him motivated. For the record I'm happy to keep Soldado, I think he's got more to show, it's easy to slate his goalscoring record last season but how many times did Andros balloon it over the bar when he should have passed to a team-mate, give him service and he'll score goals, just got to get the confidence back. People raved about Negredo's early season form, but didn't he score something like 1 goal after Christmas? He went from looking one of the bargains of the season to a donkey. Confidence is key, otherwise you snatch at the chances when they come and it's gone. Nothing is a surprise to our buys last summer now, it's time to step up to the plate in surroundings they're now familiar with. Wishful thinking but I'm always optimistic.

Soldado would benefit from proper wingers, AVB's slow tempo and inverted wingers meant the chance was gone by the time the opposition regrouped. Poch plays higher tempo, meaning the defence doesn't have time to get organised as the majority of chances created are from winning the ball back higher up the pitch. He'd benefit from a settled team, we had too many players last season that we seemed to rotate just to keep them all happy. How can you build an understanding when you have different personal playing all around you every week? I haven't looked into it but I'd be surprised if we played the same players for even just two games in a row last season. One week it was Siggy left wing, the next Lamela, the next Townsend, then Eriksen, and on a couple of occasions Lennon. No wonder they looked like a team of strangers.

Yes, play early crosses for Soldado to be effective. COYS

Agree, Crissybwoy, last season was a mare re different personal, I reckon MP might streamline the squad a bit, he doesn't seem to be into rotation looking at Saints last year.

Mix26 - Did you actually watch Naughton trying to play left back last season ? In particular Raheem Sterling going outside him repeatedly and forcing him to try and tackle with the left foot. It was a disaster, in the end he had to be taken off. With a left footer there the winger can only go to his weaker side if he goes inside towards the covering central defender, I would have thought it pretty obvious that a full back is more exposed on the outside than the inside and the winger determines which foot he has to tackle with. If the covering player was better than the first choice wouldn't he become the first choice ? you aren't making sense.

Block D, I heard that Caulker said she, "looked like a tart", or words to that effect, but at the time he didn't know she was a relative. Just what I heard.

Block S Spurs, yes, that's exactly what I had read in a number of different places when the "shock" transfer was done. It was madness to sell Caulker who has everything (except pace) to be a solid CB for the next decade. There are better, but where he lacks he makes up for in positioning and he has the potential to score quite a few from set pieces. I had no doubt that what was related was correct. Remember, Gallas had been let go, Kaboul was injured leaving us Dawson (who AVB preferred to sell) and Vertonghen as CB's when he was sold. It was a Lewis decision and, I presume, it will be a cold day in Hell before it is reversed. COYS

muttley - Alen Hansen once made the point you should judge a defender not on how good he is but how many mistakes he made. He also said that even the best defenders sometimes have to launch it into the stands, what marked out the really good defenders was they knew when they had time and when they had to just get rid of the ball. Chiriches doesn't seem to have that awareness at all. What compounds the problem is he is so lightweight even a wispy winger can nudge him off the ball with ease. you could contrast it with BAE who was so strong even a center forward twice his size couldn't force him off the ball, consequently he got away with things he really had no right to. What makes it worse in terms of defending headers is even if Vlad was in the right place he would usually lose the header anyway. Defending isn't about subtlety or even power, its about efficiency and cutting out the errors as far as possible.
