The Numbers Game

Last season we started with what we were told was a strong squad but only one left back and boy did we suffer as a result.

Its a simple numbers game, two players for each position, but its one we seem to struggle to understand. Two players we are currently trying to get rid off are Sigurdsson and Dawson, their situations could not be more different. In Siggi's case you could say he is unlucky but the simple fact is we have too many central midfield players.

You can argue for and against each of them but the reality is we need to reduce the numbers. There is no point in having a player on your books if he is never going to play or is only going to play out of position. But if we have an oversupply of players in central midfield the opposite is true in central defence. Kaboul's injuries mean you can't rely on him, Cliriches is an accident waiting to happen every time he goes on the pitch. That just leaves Vertonghen, we are trying to get him to sign a new contract but no guarantee he will, and Dawson.

So as a bare minimum we need one more central defender and hope that Kaboul stays fit, Cliriches stops giving the ball away in our third, or Fryers makes it as a central defender. If we can bring in two decent centre halves then Dawson becomes surplus. But that's not what seems to be happening, rather like BAE last year we seem to be trying to dump a player without having secured a replacement. Last season Dawson played more games than any of our other central defenders, not because he was first choice but because he was fit. That's the reality of the Premier league, its why the numbers game is important.

JOD I fully agree with your article and your comments on Chiriches!
Slurms McKenzie
I still don't see how we could have a better fourth or fifth choice CB then Dawson. I'd keep him and sign one more good CB which would gives us proper competition int eh CB department and also keep a safety valve for Kabouls knees!
A decsion then needs to be made about Fryers - is he a CB or a LB and then stick with it, the last thing we need in the squad is another young player who is a Jack of all trades and a master of none!
Slurms McKenzie
Selling Dawson at this point is mad and considering how close to a testimonial he is spiteful.
spurdon
Certainly the decision to sell caulker last season was Bizzare when you consider we need five CB the year previous and got fourth, with only four last seaosn and two of them absent through injury and the other here in body but not spirit it was ultimately what cost us in the league - not the strikers!
Slurms McKenzie
jod not really an inside into much to be frank. Also your analysis of CHIRICHES (please also not spelling) is dismal and suffice to say you have never defended in your life before... But that's just my opinion... We are not "getting rid" of anyone, it's a simple factor of buying and selling players. I'm not into witchcraft but if you could also let us know who and how our players will get injured in the future that would be great! As for BAE he was a disaster waiting to happen which has clearly been proven. Danny Rose was given a run to prove himself and we had Naughton, Fryers and Verts for cover so can't really complain much there. As for the obvious current 2-3 months discussion regarding this topic I agree we need a LB and at least 1 CB....
Mix26
spurdon we tried to sell him 2 years ago too? What's the point? Keeping Dawson is committing defensive suicide once again. Hell u probs want his captain again...
Mix26
Whatever players come this summer, one thing is for certain, DANIEL CLUELESS, TASTELESS LEVY will dress them in by far the ugliest Tottenham Hotspur home shirt I have seen in my entire life!!! Red, White, Yellow and Navy Blue, what does it mean to you??? http://shop.tottenhamhotspur.com/
Pele10
colours don't mean squat just the little crest over my heart is what matters!
Slurms McKenzie
Pele I don't care about what the shirt looks like, I care about if we win or not and the players performances. IMO the shirts look good but then again unlike yourself I am not a fashion fairy...

It is funny how the difference of opinion varies so much, even between us fans. For me Chiriches is a footballer who may make a mistake but he's intention is to retain possession 99% of the time. Dawson for me is a typical old fashioned English defender, one who gives possession back to the oppostion almost every time he has the ball. He is a row Z, if in doubt put it out player, which he needs to be because his footballing ability (ball control) is awful. This is part of the problem with England too. Football has evolved since the 70's only the English mentality and style hasn't caught up.

I think it was Brendan Rodger who once said "I will not discipline a player who makes a mistake trying to do the right thing".
yiddyboy
a solid post yiddyboy!

Part of the problem was that Naughton was deemed cover for both LB and RB (whilst good at neither), plus Vertonghen was deemed both CB and LB, and Kaboul was somehow deemed a CB option, when he had no guarantee of ever regaining fitness and form. Those all screwed up the numbers. Add on top of that, Rose, who was declared our LB, and did not really deliver, and Walker got injured when it really mattered. Our management then flooded our midfield with such a confusing array of midfield players. I do think that simplicity is key. This is why the title is often won by sides with a settled core team. It only works if your core have no ambiguity in where they play. Yes, the priority is LB and CB - Davies and Caulker for me. Caulker could give us what Dawson gives us whilst adding youth and on the ascendancy in terms of his ability. Caulker is not the finished article, but we need the sort of stability that he could give us.
TonyRich
Mix26 - Chiriches is a disaster waiting to happen, the number of times he gives the ball away in dangerous positions through a combination of trying to play football in the wrong areas of the pitch and a simple lack of physical strength is beyond belief. Naughton is a right back, after last season do you still not understand that playing a right footer at left back doesn't work. Vertonghen is happy playing left back for Belgium but not for us. We could have used Fryers last season, mostly we didn't. If the management aren't confident in him then he's not cover. The whole point about having two players for each position is you don't know where injuries will occur, so you have to try and cover all your bases. Buying and selling players may be simple but we keep getting it wrong. We're trying to sell Dawson to Hull before bringing anyone in, as I said if we sell him we need two. What are the chances we won't get them and will start the season light ?
jod
It's funny that a few seasons ago we didn't try to sign Vermaelan because we said he was not tall enough only for a few seasons later to sign Chiriches??? we only had to see the West Ham games where they punted it to Carroll with Chiriches trying to mark him and funny enough we lost all 3 games!! he is not tall enough or good or physical enough, Daws is too slow in the high line game so it leave's Verts and Kaboul(sicknote) .... why are we not getting Caulker back? why not go for Audeweid the good Belgian? he can play along the whole back line! Another strange one is paying £30 million for Lamela when Konoplanka or Griezmann are going for a lot less, crazy decisions from Levi who is being guided by the useless Baldini. Same old Spurs getting there players in last minute when they should be signed so they can all do pre-season training together! dear o dear.
neil1
Yiddy in the long term Chiriches may well prove to be an outstanding CB but last season he suffered due to a steep learning curve, unsettled defensive line ups and unsettled defensive partner. However all these factors came into play last season because of the lack of cover in our back line, which meant players were getting injured because of excissive playing time covering other injuries. I am not suggesting that Dawson should be number one of the team sheet but as JOD rightly says he played more then the rest because he was fit. As poor as his footballing ability is he would still be useful in early Europa games, cups rounds and weaker league opposition to allow for adequate rotation, rest and recovery for the rest of the defesive squad. I don't see selling dawson and replacing him solving any of our problems as in my mind we still need another CB. if our transfers this window are to be limited to only 2or 3 I would rather just sign a new CB retain Dawson for cover and concentrate on LB and LW. If we can keep our favoured back line injury free then Dawson's game time will be limited and he may well want out in January or next June at which point we can repalce him or promote from within.
Slurms McKenzie
I am not really looking into whether Dawson is due a testimonial or not - IMO he has earned plenty at THFC and time the club went away from being sentimental... I'd prefer if Kaboul went... Unlike you jod, I'd prefer a Chriches and Verts centre defence in the absence of any additions... hopefully Veljkovic will be given a proper run out in the first this year... I don't really care about the shirts nor the colour of the logo - I did when I was a teenager ! No longer a teenager... Looking forward to Seattle - calamity Rose to have his best game ever at LB for Spurs ?

Mix - you may well say some truth on Dawson given his age and the high line tactics that we are increasingly employing, but selling Dawson now without a replacement is also defensive suicide. Caulker could cover what Dawson gives us, but I'd still keep Daws just in case the same thing happens again - Kaboul's leg falls off, Chiriches manages 14 games in a season again, and Vertonghen is required to play emergency LB. Daws would be content to stay and fight for place - or rather wait for the others to drop like flies. As Highgate correctly says, it would be better if Kaboul goes rather than Daws. At the very least you know that you can get a season out of Daws. At least you know that Daws does not want to leave. If Kaboul was fit, he would have run his contract down and left anyway. Kaboul showed last season that getting back to some degree of fitness did not mean that he retained his form. He is not ledley in that respect. As for Chiriches, I am not a fan - BUT he had too few games to judge on, and hopefully he has finally adapted. There is no doubt that he prefers the ball on the ground, and is very accomplished on the ball.
TonyRich
jod firstly I disagree with your Chiriches analysis if I had not made it clear already, obviously u cant even spell the guy's name right but hell what do I know. You assume a players ability to play a position depends on what foot he chooses to use. What sort of cover are u expecting? Please enlighten us of the team who has the privilege to have an outstanding cover who does the job better if not the same as the first choice. We sold Caulker because Dawson would not leave, it's simple really as currently Dawson is on his way out and I would assume we are working on his cover as we speak.
Mix26
@ McKenzie Watch last seasons West Ham games with Chiriches getting owned by Carroll in the air and goals resulting from it! would have Caulker over him all day! another bad decision from Levi/Baldini to let Caulker go....Crazy!
neil1
TonyRich I don't know that about kaboul and its unfair to suggest it. I would however be reasonably happy starting the season with Vertoghen, Kaboul, Caulker, dawson and Chiriches as our CB options to allow either Dawson or Kaboul to leave would mean that Fryers is a proper CB and he steps up or the Velljkovic is a proper CB and steps up but either way a sustained campaign across European FA and League cups as well as 38 league games plus a smatterign of international games means the squad needs 5 CBs!
Slurms McKenzie
As for the shirt. The problem is not the red. It is that there are too many clashing colours on it. If the logo was pink or orange, the same problem would occur. Navy + yellow + red on white is too busy. We all remember the purely white 'n' navy shirts as the best. Why is it that the Wimbledon tournament can demand plain white outfits, yet we cannot demand a navy/black sponsor...? It is not a major issue for me, merely slightly annoying... Just do not expect me to buy the shirt... Just as I did not buy the one with the revolting yellow sides...

Tony I can assure u we could find a better replacement in the championship within a week for Dawson so I'm not concerned in the least...
Mix26
However if one of the new players from last season gets pass because of the management upheavel and injuries then they all get it. i wasn't impressed with Chiriches on what I saw of him but I am willing to give him the benefit of the doubt , but we still need 5 CBs.

Mix26 - we sold Caulker because we could not guarantee him first team football in a world cup year when England were not sorted at the back. Plus we got a good offer for Caulker. I wanted Caulker to stay, but I cannot complain about the logic - barring the fact that 3 CBs + Kaboul were clearly not enough - and Fryers clearly was not ready to be considered.
TonyRich
Come on guys ... weíve got the best squad on the planet. It seems obvious what we need .... a good GK to replace Lloris, a good MF to replace Eriksen, and weíre good to go!
Geofspurs
Mix26 - there is a "better replacement" in the Championship, and he is called "Caulker". But Chiriches was no replacement for even Caulker as he did not play enough. It is not that straightforward. I would love to pick up a CB from the Championship - as long as he has promise and enough heart, pace & strength to survive.
TonyRich
Geof careful now, your persona is slipping and your inner Levy is peeking out!
Slurms McKenzie
As long as dawson is playing we will never see CL again.great guy servant and so on but a second rate deffender that as held us up for years.time to move on. 18th to 12th place player that is what the hope or lack of it from open eyes me.
bazdog
Carroll dominates pretty much anyone in the air!

SLURMS I'm not saying sell Dawson I'm just highlighting his game. AVB wanted to play a high line, as does Poch, this simple means Dawson is not a suitable player for this formation/style. If we play Dawson in a high line against the likes of Alexis Sanchez, Stirling or any other player with pace I'll guarantee the mess will be worse than what Carroll did with Chiriches in the aerial battle. We need to play a system that suits the players available, if Dawson is the only fit CB then for those games highline shouldn't be an option, or we should replace Dawson with a player who can handle the high line..
yiddyboy
GET RID, winners wanted losers out and daws can head the que.
bazdog
Should we read anything to selection fo players to promote the new jersey? Specifically Verts and Paulinho? but Ade is also an interesting one!
Slurms McKenzie
Tony I think Caulker realized that with Dawson staying he had no chance at Spurs. I don't disagree he had a lot of potential but I suspect that boat has sailed. As in he is signing for QPR
Mix26
Yiddy I can of get that we are arguing both sides of the same coin and yes obviously its horses for courses ahen it come sto defensive formations. My point is that in the absence of two CB signings I don't see Dawson as 4th or 5th choice that much of a catastrophe. I also would not be a fan of the high defensive line as it squeezes the space available to our midfield and also removes the safety option of playing the ball back to your defenders as they are more or less part of the action and get closed down far quicker (again part of Chiriches problems last year). As well as leaving us very vunerable to quick counter attacks and runs from deep!
Slurms McKenzie
Mix QPR are trying to sign him but no real indication that he wants to go there, especially with Rio ahead of him in the pecking order!
Slurms McKenzie
Slurms - Harry felt signing Rio would encourage Caulker to join them to learn with him, so they think he will go. Hope we come in with a late bid, Arry will then turn to Dawson again :)

Win Win Windle!!!!
Slurms McKenzie
We sold Caulker because he disrespected Joe Lewis' daughter, it was for non-footballing reasons.
Crissybwoy
Slurms I'd be happy to have Dawson as 4th/5th choice, the question is would he be happy with that, if yes then keep the guy and as you mentioned earlier, he is great for earlier Europa games, or championship or lower cup games.
Kaboul cannot be relied upon due to his injury record, Verts needs to buck up as he was dreadful in many games last year. Having said that I would like to see Verts and Chiriches given a run of games in the middle.
yiddyboy
Caulker certainly isn't the great white hope and long term I would only see his as part of our back up Cb pairing the question who makes up the other three spots. If Verts is in then great paly him beside a resurgent Kaboul and we'ed have one hell of a CB pairing but if we get a repeat of last season from both then its car crash central! Chiriches plays better ont eh left side of cb? as does caulker? as does Verts. Kaboul and dawson are righties so if daws goes we need a right sided CB who can run fast and is strong in the air but can also play the ball on the ground and has a good awareness of teh players around him. When you stack it all up Bony is really the best option for CB!.
Slurms McKenzie
Wilfred Bony to Liverpool,ah man can we just sign somebody already.
Our rivals signing players for fun is making me twitchy, even West ham are set to spend over £20 million with their 5th signing.
If someone buys West ham out with that stadium we could be in trouble.
Fanny adams
I think some people see defending as an art form and others judge it on what they see on the pitch. As en example, it's easy to see where Chiriches has overplayed it or is adjusting to the pace of the Prem. The problem is fans don't see the subtle things like him using his brain to snuff out an attack before it's even started. It's the same as getting a toe in and nicking the ball versus a full blooded tackle. Obviously, the fans enjoy the latter but the purists enjoy the former. They also don't see the subtle things like when the ball is out on the right wing and Dawson moves out 10 yards for no reason and then sees the ball go over his head. That stuff you can't teach and guys like Rio, Carvalho, King etc just wouldn't have moved over in the first place. They would have held their ground and made the cross impossible.

Must admit, I would love to replay last season and for every minute on the pitch that Dawson had give it to Caulker. We would have been much better off in my opinion and I would guess that Caulker would have been in Brazil. Personally, I will be disappointed if Dawson is still here at end of August. He doesn't suit Poch's style of play from what I can tell.

I also don't agree with the comment in the article about having one LB. Fryers was 21 years old and proved each time he played that he was equal of not better than Rose. He just got treated badly. Neither may not make it but they are somewhat protected as they are homegrown. In fact 5 of our 8 defenders are homegrown (Walker, Naughton, Dawson, Rose, Fryers) and it creates a problem. Poch can't just go out and buy the best defenders in the world as he'll end up with too many foreigners or too little homegrown whichever way you look at it.
muttley
Yiddy Verts and Chiriches together with both commited to playing for the team could be an interesting prospect and the lad isn't a full romainian international because he's useless! However the CDM deployed infront of them is equally as improtant!
Slurms McKenzie
Chill Big Fanny, Davies could be in by the end of the day. Not marquee, but a start and an improvement on what we have.

Highgatespur
Don't know if anyone on here goes on Twitter but the comments people make on there infuriate me!!! Yes we need a LB and everyone says it however don't forget we have 3 on the books! Why would Levy as a business man looking after Spurs interests from a financial point of view sign another until we have certainty players leave!? We have money to spend on players but we have to sell that's a fact! Why would we sign another striker when we'll be playing one up front and we're paying big wages to Soldado and Ade and also have Kane as back up? They won't all fit on the bench! Some fans need to get real.

Thank you crissybwoy. That's what I heard too. The fact of Caulker's move was through disrespecting Lewis' daughter. I think the first team football thing was to save face. As for Chiriches, I'm in the like him camp but I don't think he and Verts would be good together against an aerial threat. Neither are good or robust enough against a Carroll or Bony or Lukaku type of player. All IMHO of course.

Crissybwoy I am chilled just a little nervous as i think our squad has holes in it & i believe as it stands,we`re again going to make hard work for ourselves.

I am actually just as concerned that players like Rose,Dawson,Adebayor,Lennon & Naughton are still here. They are deadwood who hold us back with inept performances.Get rid already.
Fanny adams
Big Fanny, I think (and hope) maybe Rose and Walker to an extent will benefit from actually having a game plan from the manager and knowing when to press, push-up, hold etc. Poch is the very opposite of "just ****** run around a bit", maybe with guidance they can improve, if not, I'm with you, get rid. Only time will tell.
Crissybwoy
Agreed spursbynature. Like Ade or not, if we can get him firing we're better with him than without, unless we can get a GENUINE replacement (which we probs won't) then for me he stays. Whether people like it or not he's one of our best players, you don't play for Real Madrid (even only on loan) if you don't have talent. Just got to keep him motivated. For the record I'm happy to keep Soldado, I think he's got more to show, it's easy to slate his goalscoring record last season but how many times did Andros balloon it over the bar when he should have passed to a team-mate, give him service and he'll score goals, just got to get the confidence back. People raved about Negredo's early season form, but didn't he score something like 1 goal after Christmas? He went from looking one of the bargains of the season to a donkey. Confidence is key, otherwise you snatch at the chances when they come and it's gone. Nothing is a surprise to our buys last summer now, it's time to step up to the plate in surroundings they're now familiar with. Wishful thinking but I'm always optimistic.
Crissybwoy
yep two for each position....so why are we talking about Daws?...we have 4 for 2, why are we talking about CM's? we have loads...we need a LB (benny isn't considered one anymore and the jury is out on fryers) we need a left footed LW option...Andros isn't one and not up to snuff on the right either...and a striker...there will be times when we want to play two up...to only have 2 snr strikers and a young Kane is not enough.., someone is going to get a good buy in Konoplyanka....

Left back needed (for the last 3 seasons), CB needed with Daws too slow, Verts maybe leaving and Kabouls njury problems. We've got plenty of midfielders, (attacking AND defensive). Attackers, I think Soldado will show why we bought him and keep Ade interested in playing. Finally, for the fifth year in a row, a bloody back up keeper. As dedicated as Brad is, he's too old!
spurboy61
Soldado would benefit from proper wingers, AVB's slow tempo and inverted wingers meant the chance was gone by the time the opposition regrouped. Poch plays higher tempo, meaning the defence doesn't have time to get organised as the majority of chances created are from winning the ball back higher up the pitch. He'd benefit from a settled team, we had too many players last season that we seemed to rotate just to keep them all happy. How can you build an understanding when you have different personal playing all around you every week? I haven't looked into it but I'd be surprised if we played the same players for even just two games in a row last season. One week it was Siggy left wing, the next Lamela, the next Townsend, then Eriksen, and on a couple of occasions Lennon. No wonder they looked like a team of strangers.
Crissybwoy
Yes, play early crosses for Soldado to be effective. COYS

Highgatespur
Mix26 - Did you actually watch Naughton trying to play left back last season ? In particular Raheem Sterling going outside him repeatedly and forcing him to try and tackle with the left foot. It was a disaster, in the end he had to be taken off. With a left footer there the winger can only go to his weaker side if he goes inside towards the covering central defender, I would have thought it pretty obvious that a full back is more exposed on the outside than the inside and the winger determines which foot he has to tackle with. If the covering player was better than the first choice wouldn't he become the first choice ? you aren't making sense.
jod
TE - that would be my biggest concern - the lck of rotation.... memories from the 2011 2012 2013 makes me shudder!
Highgatespur
Block D, I heard that Caulker said she, "looked like a tart", or words to that effect, but at the time he didn't know she was a relative. Just what I heard.
Crissybwoy
Block S Spurs, yes, that's exactly what I had read in a number of different places when the "shock" transfer was done. It was madness to sell Caulker who has everything (except pace) to be a solid CB for the next decade. There are better, but where he lacks he makes up for in positioning and he has the potential to score quite a few from set pieces. I had no doubt that what was related was correct. Remember, Gallas had been let go, Kaboul was injured leaving us Dawson (who AVB preferred to sell) and Vertonghen as CB's when he was sold. It was a Lewis decision and, I presume, it will be a cold day in Hell before it is reversed. COYS
peterballb
muttley - Alen Hansen once made the point you should judge a defender not on how good he is but how many mistakes he made. He also said that even the best defenders sometimes have to launch it into the stands, what marked out the really good defenders was they knew when they had time and when they had to just get rid of the ball. Chiriches doesn't seem to have that awareness at all. What compounds the problem is he is so lightweight even a wispy winger can nudge him off the ball with ease. you could contrast it with BAE who was so strong even a center forward twice his size couldn't force him off the ball, consequently he got away with things he really had no right to. What makes it worse in terms of defending headers is even if Vlad was in the right place he would usually lose the header anyway. Defending isn't about subtlety or even power, its about efficiency and cutting out the errors as far as possible.
jod
Crissybwoy, first I heard was that he tried to pick her up (no doubt for a long-term fulfilling relationship), she stated she wanted nothing to do with a "footballer", no doubt as derogatory as it can be said, and he stated something along the lines that he wouldn't want to have anything to do with a "bra**er". Whether he knew who it was or not, he should have just moved on. He put it out there, she declined the opportunity, he should have gone on to the next one. COYS
peterballb
HGS, I reckon you're going to be pi$$ed off this window, Levy IMO isn't going to splash 20-30 mil on a forward unless Ade or Soldado go, which I can't see happening, so its onemoreseason at WHLN17, LOL COYS FO BP.

It was def along those lines peter, either way a mark was overstepped and he was shipped out sharpish. Shame, but then footballers aren't know for intelligence and most of them are nob-heads anyway. I met Damien Duff when out clubbing once, proper horrible little ****. Not saying they're all the same though. But I still remember a campaign where they were trying to get all Premier League footballers to give 1 DAYS wages to support underfunded nurses, think about 95% of them declined. Must be tough thinking about only taking 60k a week home instead of 70k for one week.
Crissybwoy
jod, and if he'd grown up in the English game, you could perhaps accept what you are saying. He rarely played last season. Had injuries to start and lots of niggles over the season. He was coming from a league where there is way more time and space. He has undeniable skills and is a rock in the Romanian defence, so I would suggest he be given a full season played in position, not on the left side before coming to any conclusions. There are a great many in our squad who could do with living by the old adage, when in doubt, kick it out. Dawson does this, yet is slagged all the time. Dawson also goes to ground all the time (in general, a no-no) yet he seems to get the ball and does not concede many penalties given how often he does it. Chiriches needs the season, Kaboul need to be healthy, Dawson needs to be played when appropriate or needed, Vertonghen needs to sign a new deal and we need to sign one more quality CB (Schar). Chiriches is also very good on the ball and can play RB, so he has a very useful skill set. If Fryers can double as CB and LB, Chiriches as RB and CB then Naughton could be sold along with Rose (who will not be second choice), if we get Davies. Sell BAE too (or loan out if there are no takers) and our back four could be any of the following: Walker, Schar, Kaboul, Vertonghen, Davies, Fredericks, Chiriches, Dawson, Fryers. Still potentially a bit weak on the left but Vertonghen can play out there just as Capoue can play CB, if required. COYS

TE, as said right from the odd - would be happy with 2 if not 3 .... a LB needed very urgently IMO ... CB +LW urgently - that is all... glad Bony and Remy lost interest cos I did as well!!! BP?

QPR have bid accepted for Caulker but he is considering other bids. Aren't we supposed to have some sweetheart discount deal to re-sign him as first option?

Slurms McKenzie, I don't think it has to do with re-signing, so much as we would get him for less as they would not have to include the sell-on, which is probably in the 25% area (so 2M if it's an 8M deal). COYS

Pete 6 million seems like a cheap fix, still if Joes *****ty looking grand daughter wants to keep grinding the axe it could be an expensive point of honour.

Jod, just read the article. You are seriously the most negative spurs supporter I ever was in contact with! Thanks for the effort. I disagree with everything you say about our vlad. You make me feel so low!!!
Dublin Hotspur
jod, Naughton was not all that bad. You mention one game. No, he is not a left back but he covered there so that Jan did not have to play there and becauseWalker and others do not have any ability on the other side of the park. The whole reason that Naughton started playing at LBwas because he and Walker were both exceptional backs but Walker was useless on the left and since Blackwell wanted his best players on the pitch, Naughton played on the other side. He also did so with fair aplomb at Norwich where he played all of RB, LB and CB. He is not as electric as Walker and, I would imagine, does not suit a Pochettino style of play, but he is nowhere near as bad as people make out. If available, there will be takers. Personally, I'd prefer Fredericks to push Walker with chiriches available in the event of injury. I like Naughton. I just think he needs to be first choice RB. He'd make a great addition to Hull City. COYS
peterballb
His team, he can do with it as he wishes. From all I have read, Pochettino is his decision. The board were told who they were taking. Levy and the board wanted FDB which is why there was all the speculation and why he spoke fairly openly about wanting it. I suspect the board had decided that's who they wanted, it wasn't possible until the summer, so TS was brought in as a replacement for the here and now. If correct, then it shows that Lewis does care and is willing tro exert his ownership influence. Doesn't mean it is the right move but it does show that he expects better and will try to pull the rabbit out of the hat himself. That also explains a relatively generous 5 year contract for a man who has only manaed for 5 years and who has not won anything. COYS
peterballb
Lads its not good news. Schneiderlin has just followed the official spurs twitter. The signs are there that he actually will sign and that sandro will leave. Really upsetting because I believe both sandro and capoue are better than the frenchmen and bentaleb also has potential to overtake him. Schneiderlin no doubt will be 20M/ more, is that really worth it considering Capoue was bought for 8M?
SpursSnM
Crissybwoy, I agree with your analysis in part on Soldado. I just think attributing the blame to AVB is a bit much. What options did he have? Our only real winger was Lennon, and he was injured. Thus no crosses. After that we had Townsend who believed all of his press and figured he would cut in ad nauseum, ignore the runs of Soldado and blast it in to the seats. Thus no crosses. Paulinho, when on the ball would burst forth and, again, would ignore the runs and blast in to the seats. Thus no crosses. Sigurdsson, too slow and, while there were crosses, he was not quick enough to hit Soldado when he was ready. Then we had Walker and Rose competing to see who could throw in the most poor crosses. Both did wonderfully well in that regard and, as I recall, after 10 games, they were both up there in crosses attempted and at the bottom of the league in effectiveness. Now I say all that and the logical conclusion is that AVB did not play the proper players. But who was he to play. Eriksen was poor until January (flashes here and there). Chadli was struggling. Lamela couldn't even settle. We didn't rotate to keep players happy. We played players that weren't ready because Kaboul, Sandro, Rose and Lennon were out while Adebayor was not there. All of Soldado, Paulinho, Capoue, Eriksen, Lamela, Townsend, Chadli were playing way more than I believe AVB would have intended. He showed with Lloris that he expected players to earn their spots. These players were just thrown in there because there was no other choice. Our top players also had to play a lot more in the cups because of all of the injuries.

AVB is very deliberate in his style of play. He believes in possession football, but he also believes in quick counter-attacking football. Porto were exciting to watch, domestically an in Europe. There were just no horses to get the job done and when the one guy who could do it tried, he ignored his teammates and shot in to the stands. We all saw it. Lots of people complained of it. Reality is though, until Lennon came back, there was just no one except the fullbacks to get the job done and they weren't hitting Soldado with anyhing. Soldado is a fox in the box. Let him run on to the ball splitting the defenders and he will score plenty. Hewould have greatly benefitted from Lennon at the start of last season. COYS
peterballb
I didn't blame AVB peter, just said that his tactics weren't conducive to the type of football that would get the best out of the players he had, something he should have realised. AVB had plenty of options so I disagree, he just made the wrong choices. Siggy left wing? When was that ever a good idea or even going to work. Let's have round pegs in round holes from now on. Football is a results business, but lets not forget the primary objective of any paying fan is to be entertained. AVB got some results, but the football was mind-numbingly terrible. No one to blame for that than AVB, he sets the style, shape and tone. Lennon's assist record is poor, it's not like Soldado will score lots of goals when his supply is so dismal. Again, down to AVB.
Crissybwoy
After watching this video I have completely changed my mind over Schneiderlin LOL. Really didnt think he was that good, watch and ***** along to this guys. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gELm5Gb3ACU
SpursSnM
Schneiderlin is a tough one. To me, it makes no sense. Why we would even look at a MF unless the deal is so ridiculous you can't say no, I know not. Schneiderlin is far better on the ball than Sandro, but Sandro is far more intimidating and I would imagineif you asked the opposition who they'd rather face, the answer would be Schneiderlin. Everything I see in Schneiderlin, I see in Bentaleb and Capoue. So why do it? If Sandro needs to go because we are going to choose two of Capoue, Bentaleb, Dembele, Paulinho and Holtby, and someone has to be the dd man out, it probably makes sense. I love how Sandro plays, but the likelihood is that his injuries are going to follow him, so m sentimentality falls off in favour of logic. If we are then selling Sandro and Dembele, then I can see it. Schneiderlin and Capoue both have far better ability to spot the pass and get the shot on goal than Dembele, who, despite his brilliant dribbling and acceleration whichsees him glide by players, his moves always wind up in the same cul de sac with no option to get it through to the striker and no option to get it out wide. Inevitably, the play comes back and then goes out wide. If we sign Schneiderlin, three of Sandro, Capoue, Paulinho, Holtby, Sigurdsson, Dembele, Bentaleb have to go. I don't see us doing that. We can't have a squad with 5 players competing for 2 spots (assuming Eriksen will be AMF with Chadli and Lamela as cover and assuming we sell Sandro and Sigurdsson). If we did sell the three (Dembele, Sigurdsson and Sandro) we'd probably be adding 5M to the kitty after buying Schneiderlin. Oh, and we'd still have to decide what to do with Carroll and Mason. COYS
peterballb
Oh, and his "inverted-wingers" bull***** tactics might work if you've got Messi and Neymar or Ronaldo and Bale, but not Siggy and Townsend.
Crissybwoy
Schneiderlin is home-grown, pretty sure we're all in agreement that our home grown players lack quality, so an instant upgrade.
Crissybwoy
Crissybwoy, but his style of play reflected what he had in the team. He played Sigurdsson on the left until Chadli was up to speed. Then Chadli was clearly out of depth and he played Eriksen and Sigurdsson out here. Same results. None of these are fast players. All are better in the middle of the park, but you still had the problem of no one to play. All well and good to suggest square peg and round hole, but who was the fit on LW that we had in the squad. As for Lennon and assists, he has led the team as often as not over the past 6 or 8 years. No he's not great, but he does put pressure on their LB which often requires the CB to come out of the middle which frees up space in the middle. He is effective in that he affects the shape of the other team and we have used this many times to get results where Lennon did not get an assist. My hope is still that Lamela arrives and Lennon becomes a player that is surplus. But until that happens, he is the best option out there and he will get the ball in to Soldado or Adebayor or Kane and his cutbacks could be incredibly effective with Paulinho or Eriksen or Capoue arrivinglaterin to the box. COYS
peterballb
Crissybwoy, I am not an advocate of inverted wingers unless they can cross with their other foot to effect. Lamela and Chadli can do that. IMO, Townsend is far more judicious with his cut ins and way more effective with his crosses from the left, which is where I would play him. For me, Chadli and Townsend duke it out for the left and Lamela and Lennon duke it out on the right. Sigurdsson and Eriksen are not wingers, but they do need to be able to go in and out as the play dictates and both are sharp when it comes to keeping our width when the winger does cut in. It is essential if you are going to create any space in the middle. COYS
peterballb
Really think that the fact he's followed Spurs' official twitter means he is 95% our player. He only follows 55 other people, most being southampton and french international players. He doesnt follow irrelevant people, therefore Spurs must now not be irrelevant to him.
SpursSnM
peter, correct me if I'm wrong but under AVB we brought in Dembele, Paulinho, Siggurdson, Eriksen and Chadli, ALL of whom could possibly play the attacking midfield role. Why sign five players for one position? Down to AVB, he should have asked for a winger if he wanted, not overload ONE position. Sorry but that is totally inexcusable! Reminds me of a few years ago when we had four right-backs in the squad, pointless.
Crissybwoy
"Townsend is far more judicious with his cut ins and way more effective with his crosses from the left". Sorry peter but how many assists did he get from the left? I can't even remember one. So more effective as in no effect at all, just like his crossing from the right.
Crissybwoy
I've invented a new tactic:- using inverted full-backs. It's probably rubbish but we should stick with it for months even if clearly doesn't work. :)
Crissybwoy
Crissybwoy, it is ridiculousto come to the conclusion that because you did not get an assist that your cross was not effective. Having watched him play both (mostly on the right last season but a few games on the left) he was, IMO, far more effective and far more what one seeks in a winger on the left than on the right. He has incredible pace and ability on the ball. What he needs to be taught is when to cut in and when to stay out wide. He also needs to work on his shooting technique because he tends to lash at the ball as he rushes to get the shot off. These skills can be harnessed and are teachable. We have a manager who is purported to be able to refine young players and get them playing to potential. Townsend has potential. Let's see if Pochettino does too. COYS
peterballb
Levy brought in Dembele and Sigurdsson, Baldini brought in the other three. The only one that was reportedly on AVB's list was Paulinho. Dembele and Dempsey were bought in late as upgrades on players like Hudd, Jenas, livermore (hard to argue there), Sigurdsson like Vertonghen was signed before AVB was named, and, if reports sre to be beleved, several of our late signings last summer were not wanted by AVB, but his job was to coach and he coached what he had. He wanted, Leandro, Moutinho, Martinez and Willian in January 2013. Which of those players did he get? COYS
peterballb
But would it look worse defensively if we put Walker on the left and Rose on the right? COYS
peterballb
He needs to learn fast peter, we've been saying that about him for about 5 years now, I remember watching him in a pre-season friendly about four years ago and he had the exact same problem, always chose the wrong option. He's 23 now, hardly a pup and by all accounts should be nearing the prime of his career in 2 or 3 years. A bit like Walker, I'm not sure if he's got the bus-fare to become a great player. You can't teach brains, you've either got them or you haven't.
Crissybwoy
Crissybwoy, I have far more faith in his IQ than that of Walker. Te ting is, many of his loans were not advantageous to him. He did well at QPR for about a month. The balance was what we saw the first part of last season. The problem was, he looked good in a couple of games, got drafted in to England (based on what, I know not) against the wishes of his manager (not because he didn't want his player playing in a friendly, just that he was not deserving) and then, when he returned,he became so big-headed, he was stumbling all over the place. People started saying he was the Bale replacement and that he was all that. AND HE BELIEVED IT!!!! He was not ready. He had not earned anything. It was all given to him and he thought he had made it. And as so often happens when you fly too close to the sun, you come crashing down. I think (just a guess here) that he was so eager to put the ambling scandal way in the past that he got ahead of himself. His progess was greatly hindered by Lnnons injury and the England call-up. Had he had to fight for Lennon's job, he would have had to get results. Instead he was playing because he was the only speed-demon we had.

Agree wholeheartedly with you though, he needs to get it all together this season. Personally, I would give him every opportunity. If he's still at sea in Jnuary, sell him on, bing Pritchard back off of loan. COYS
peterballb
I am so proud of the fact that we have such an amazing squad of players, that it cannot be improved. This must be the case, as we are officially confirmed as the only one of the 20 PL clubs, to have spent nothing, and signed nobody. When you think that even those that won the league, and finished in the top 4, a distance in front of us, and those that finished close behind us, have all spent considerably to sustain, or improve, their positions for 2014-15, our players must be of an impeccable standard, so as not to require any improvement, isn't it wonderful. We obviously think we can break the top 4 with the current squad. Similarly I of course assume I am going to win the National lottery on Saturday night, even though the odds are 14,000,000/1.

Is anyone actually watching the seattle game? ''spurs tour pass'' aint doing nadda this end, soooo frustrating :((

Tottingham10, Kaboul is not able to play any line, high or low, he is a "sicknote", he needs repatriating behind the lines, he is what is known in technical terms as knackered, hence we should be signing at least one, preferably 2 CBs.

Arky
Frank, it's not that we cannot be improved. Obviously we can. So can City, no matter how much they spend. Messi is still out there I hear. 250M Euros and he is theirs. The point should not b that we have done nothing this window, but rather that we have spent the past 2 years adding 2/3 of a squad. It simply is not prudent to go whole hog and have the merry go round continue until Pochettino gets his hands on the lads, works with them, and sees who anproperly be developed in his mold. Say what you will about Freund and video but it is not the same as being on the pitch. He is also uilding a "team" and there may well be some players that you or I believe ought to be out on the next bus who actually benefit the team by being there. Pochettino is supposedly a developer of young players who can get them to play to their potential. Since any player in the squad not named Lloris under-performed to some degree last season, there is a heck of a lot of room to do better. What we need right now is a settled squad with a plan and a willingness to go through with th plan. Pochettino has never won anything as a manager. Not even got close in fact. He too needs to learn and learn fast. The players seem to like him (early days and AVB was liked by all but a couple of terrible attitude players). If a great deal comes along, super, snap it up. If there is someone you will not play because they are just too far down the pecking order, sell them on. Beyond that, wait and see what we have and move forward in January towards the plan so that the team he has in a year will be closer to the one he wants to kick on with. Europa should still be achievable this season and if United and Liverpool have the issues I believe they will, we could pip them for fourth. Certainly don't expect it. I expect to see a style of play that is better on the eye and one that is solid at the back. Find me an example of a manager with 5 years or less of managing experience, who has never won anything, never managed in four competitions and never qualified for Europe that has gone and gotten CL at their first real opportunity in one of the big leagues. It just doesn't happen. You either succeed from the off because you are a cut above (Mancini, Guadiola - both who benefitted from the systems they were brought up in) or you learn your trade and little by little you get better and better. This is a huge jump for him. He has notgone to City or Chelsea where he can buy whatever he wants. He has to work with what he has and live within a budget. It will take time. COYS
peterballb
peterballb, every time you write that MP has not won anything, an acute stab of pain races across my heart. Fearing the worst for the upcoming season. God help us if MP is unable to deliver.
Arky
Arky, that's just it. What are your expectations and what are you basing it on? If it's on the coach, what does his resume suggest? If it's on the players, what does their proven quality suggest? Then, how does that stack up against the other PL teams. I believe only Chelsea and City have nailed on better squads. Pellegrini, Mourinho, Wenger and Van Gaal are all proven winners and have way more experience. Rodgers, not so much. To my mind, the story this season is who best manages the four competitions, Martinez, who will not have the squad but is in his second year there, Rodgers who is the longest serving at his post but who will have a bunch of new players and who has lost his best player, or Pochettino who is in completely new territory, but with a more settled squad. There's the battle. The rest is hope and a prayer, though I don't think ManU will have an easy time of it. What do I expect? For Pochettino to coach Spurs in a more appealing style, with more cohesion at the back and to develop the talent we have in the squad. Where will that take us in the table? Who knows. Uncharted territory for this manager. Rodgers has finished second. Martinez fifth and he has won a cup. COYS
peterballb
peterballb, I do not disagree with you. The fact that MP is so green and the gamble so great is what scares me. Your accurate assessment that he has only moderate success is a good peek behind the facade being sold. It just reminds me of our precarious situation. Hope and prayer indeed. My hope is for a cup and my prayer is for a CL spot. Maybe MP should not focus on all four fronts? I want to deprive Man Utd or Liverpool of a CL spot.
Arky

We as fans will not be able to "fortress in" WHL, and influence games from the stands, Until us fans become more positive about the team. Can we all not stop knocking players and poch , at least til we have experienced a season of them engaging into the system? Do we have to find a fault and a negative? If love the whole support of THFC to be buzzing. Instead it's us fans bitchin and fearing in the stands. ( me included) That won't help the team! Right. Off for a kip. Been up all night! ( not for the good reasons;)
Dublin Hotspur
positivity is generated..and as much as people would like that to come from fans it's hard to be positive when you see a board not trying, when you see players that have failed time after time warming up to fail yet again, when you see the best players sold etc, etc...like it or not in order to keep a team at the top of the PL you need to constantly be improving on the weak links (not shuffling the stronger areas!)...we couldn't score enough early season and conceded too many later on...of course there was a huge difference in approach and available players but it does mean we do NEED to improve...we've sold defoe who despite his faults scored a lot of goals...they need replacing and our two snr strikers are not spring chickens, LB obvious, LW was a massive problem last year, CB -injuries and age can we go one more season with the current 4?...there's work that needs to be done, that should already have been done...Baldini it's time to earn that salary and Levy it's time to spend some of the money you take from fans to watch a football team and spend it on the team they watch!
shedboy2
MP's record of wining sliverware is about to improve.. he is now at a big club in PL.. best squad he has coached, and players who will play for him. So therefore it is logical we will be in at least one semi final of the 3 cups available. Euro League is the one we want..entry to Cl next year. Or FA cup with top 4 place.
Block D Spurs
block D- that's not logic...wishful thinking...he should do better with better players than he did at Saints so logically we should finish above 8th....but the variables have changed (others improved different teams etc) so even that is not a given....he did manage to bring through all the kids at Espanyol and only managed to take them to the foot of the table, yes rock bottom! so logically he shouldn't be able to do any worse than that!...;)
shedboy2
I'm actually excited about the new season, mostly because of this list of players - Lloris, Walker, Vertonghen, Chiriches, Kaboul, Sandro, Capoue, Dembele, Paulinho, Bentaleb, Eriksen, Holtby, Lennon, Townsend, Lamela, Chadli, Soldado, Adebayor. Those 18 massively excite me as the makings of a great squad. If we can add Ben Davies and other signings like a centre half and backup GK then it will look an even more impressive 21 players. Then you have guys like Rose/Fryers and Naughton/Fredericks perhaps making up the numbers but able to do a job knowing you can also push Vertonghen and Chiriches out to FB as well. Brad can be number 3 GK and if we then sign a 3rd striker up top then I expect VS to be absolutely buzzing.

I will be buzzing anyway as I have faith in Poch to deliver with whatever cards he's dealt. That's just me though to see the best in people until they give me reasons not to. I was the same with Jol, Harry, AVB and Tim and the only one that didn't let me down was AVB. He just needed more time and so will Poch at times. With the current mindset on here, I doubt he'll get it as I'm feeling like the last couple of decades have taken their toll and fans have been conditioned to be negative based on being let down by the club so many times. That unhealthy energy needs to be put on the back burner for a while though until we know what Poch's Spurs will be all about. We'll get our first glimpse this evening.

shedboy2, You 100% correct when you tell us "positivity is generated", that the board are not trying to the level that will bring the club success! All real Spurs fans know what you are saying is true! But you can't convince these ENIC plants on here of anything. They come on here season after season praising the richest owner in the clubs history for acquiring himself the worst trophy per season percentage of any THFC owner since world war 2... A statistical fact! They praise him for only 1 CL experience in 15 seasons on the back of a Harry relegation rescue mission, they kiss his backside even though our bitter local rivals the Arsenal have come above us each and every season he has underachieved us! They praise his LOSER of chairman, who has become the joke of all football fans throughout the Premiership. My Chelsea, Arse, and Iron mates adore the little Loser! "Long may he stay THFC chairman" they say, as they bust a gut with laughter! And it is the same ENIC kiss arse crew who are the first on here to slaughter, put down and take the tiss out the very coaches their hero LOSER Levy hand picks, personally chooses and then back stabs. Then the applaud him like he's a hero for the sacking. great decision Daniel, he had to go! And they come on here with there lies about the new stadium project telling us the new stadium will be completed by by 2017, without a shed of official written evidence to back this up, pleading for more time for ENIC after a decade and a half. They ain't Spurs fans, they are fans of a football mercenary worth 4.5 billion dollars who has jumped ship at five, I repeat FIVE pro football clubs before THFC. Rangers, Slavia Prague, AEK Athens, Vicenza Calcio, and FC Basel They are fans of a British tax exile football mercenary who plans to sell THFC for vast profit having failed the club totally on the pitch. Not a single FA Cup or European final reached in 14 seasons! You tell us Shed "Levy it's time to spend some of the money you take from fans to watch a football team and spend it on the team they watch!" No chance of this happening! The plan is in full motion now for the big sell! The only question now is, does the sell happen before or directly after the build??? Please god before, so we can start winning on the pitch!!! Lamela is like a new signing from abroad that won't need to settle into London life, will have a decent grasp of the language and knows his team-mates. He also has a manager from his home country who has played international football and knows what it's like to be an Argetinian abroad. It's all set up for him this year and I have high hopes that he'll be a key player in the new Poch system. I just hope he's over his back / hip injury.

I want to enjoy it for what it is... Football. Not banking and finances, not politics. Not anything else but football. Up the Lilywhites, Yid Army and all that jazz!
MAN ON!
3 players - just get a LB, LW and ST and we're good to go...get Konoplyanka - who Rogers wanted at pool last year until the Dnipro chairman pulled the plug or griezmann, looks a lallana type player..how about Kolarov? or Rodriguez at LB players that have a bit of presence to go with their talent....up front how is Benteke's recovery coming on? Lukaku? or is bad boy Balotelli ready to come back to the PL? all young enough and good enough to lead our line for a few years....just show a bit of ambition instead of squabbling about journeymen...
shedboy2
James, I think Eriksen will continue to shine, and hopefully the rest of the squad will improve under MP.
Thats Entertainment
agree on Lamela....just a shame the one player we all want to see is one that's been here for a year!
shedboy2
Shots on goal...will be my main Desire from tonights game. I.e....I want to see how much goal scoring threat spurs can be under MP'. 50/50 on the new home shirt. I won't be buying it, due to the Large red letters, but my son will be, with his money. Happy with the 2nd top. Not happy that Sandro....is unlikely to be at THFC, for too much longer. Happy that we are being linked with a young decent striking prospect...i.e..Destro. "Come on you Spurs".
82spursdebut
MAN ON!, I like your upbeat stance on what is lets be honest, a distraction on what can be serious stuff going on around us.
Thats Entertainment
of course you are correct man on!...we can control our own thoughts and choose to be positive! However, what may be positivity to some is delusional to others...we can use all the PMA we want but sometimes you just have to look at where we are...we just aren't good enough but will we try to improve?...because that would be positive...not do so...well you reap what you sow....
shedboy2
if shots on goal is your main desire best hope Andros is playing...but of it's shots on target you want....;)
shedboy2
When people look at MP's past record everybody ommits to mention that not only has he not won anything, unlike Frank De Boer who should have got the job, but at one of the only 2 clubs he has managed, Espanyol he got relegated and sacked. It is inconvenient of course to mention this, but unfortunately it is on his CV and part of his "experience", something that makes one twitchy about his appointment. Apart from Martinez how many of his rivals have shared this distinction. So before we do handstands about his alleged coaching abilities etc. let's just remember that it hasn't always worked, we just have to hope he proves to be the first Levy gamble to pay off, following many that haven't.
Frank
Not concerned with Andros. Like to see Fredericks given a better chance this season...( to establish himself in the main squad 25 to 30 players) Yes, I like to see minimum 20 shots on goal per game....all games. I expect....minimum 50% of shots taken, to be on target.
82spursdebut
shedboy - good enough for what? That's the key question in my mind. I don't think I'm being delusional to think that Poch can take pretty much the same set of players, get them fit and organised and expect better than last season. Will that get us top 4? Perhaps not, but it will be a platform to build on where we can get top 4 in the future. That's despite us having a huge financial disadvantage based on the size of our balance sheet compared to the 5 other teams. Even Liverpool have a 40% higher turnover than us which makes a high difference to transfer kitty and salaries.
muttley
shedboy2... A steady and noticeable improvement is all I hope for, for now. We'll see... I'll only be succumbing to any delusions I may have, if I expect too much, too soon...... Andros will score plenty, of course and we'll finish no lower than 4th!
MAN ON!
Frank... That is true about Espanyol but, Southampton were an improved team and finished 8th in the PL. That's progress, is it not?
MAN ON!
Muttley how much debt are Fenway Sports prepared to carry to succeed at Liverpool, who incidentally were very close to administration when the 2 former American owners quit. The same goes for the Glazers at Man Utd, and the situation at both Chelsea and Man City are well documented. It's not only about turnover it is also about ambition, desire, and the willingness to invest in an effort to win and succeed, rather than the ambition to build a property portfolio and prepare to sell at huge profit, whilst wiling away the time on a sun bed in the Bahamas, with two fingers up at the tax man, and incidentally at Spurs fans at the same time.
Frank
I would have preferred FDB but we have MP. He is our immediate future and I see his past as a good preparation for Spurs. He can improve on his CV with us.... I'll give him the benefit of my doubt as, I've no choice but to support him our players and the club. It's my job as a football supporter... It's a dirty job but someone's gotta do it.
MAN ON!
There is no point going over the Pochettino vs De Boer discussion again, we've appointed Pochettino so let's just get on with it. Straight away I have a far better feeling with Pochettino than I ever did with AVB. As previous posts have mentioned we just need to sort our defense out, massive concerns are Dawson, Kaboul, Rose and Naughton all of which are not reliable for different reasons.
MrSpurs
frank- going from memory - I didn't think he got relegated with Espanyol, he did bring through the youth (he didn't have many options to be fair) and did take that team to last place in the table..when he was sacked. So much for developing youth though...and yes FdB should have got the job...we now just have to cross our fingers...
shedboy2
Frank - I don't know but when your turnover and market cap are as healthy as Liverpool's and Red Sox then their prerogative is to take risks. I'm not even sure that Lewis has even recovered from Bear Stearns coming close to going under. He personally lost $1.6b and whilst is still incredibly rich, he doesn't seem to have the inclination to lose money in Spurs like the other billionaires. What he seems to be into is financing our stadium for the long term which could easily be after he's no longer on this planet as he's almost 80. It is ridiculous to think that someone that age wants to take money out of of THFC. He's actually trying to build his legacy which moves THFC up the list in world football. You and others seem to imply that he wants to steal from us and then bury the money with him. Even Berlosconi couldn't spend that much money in his old age :-) I'm not saying that ENIC and Levy always play it right but if people started looking outside-in a little bit more they would collect all of the data-points and be more objective. Ultimately, I expect to see changes in the ownership of Spurs in the next few years. I'm not against it as long as we don't get someone like Randy Lerner or Thaskin Sinawatra. Lewis and Levy will need to vett that carefully just like Sugar did. In the mean time all they can do is keep trying to build the value of the club and stay in the leading pack. We can't yet get £750m sponsorship deals like a certain club that finished 5 points behind us did last season. That's just the reality.
muttley
Loads of posts on Newsnow saying we are to beat Liverpool for the Ben Davies signature. I will believe it when I see it, why he should prefer us to them, with CL football on offer, it just seems highly unlikely.
Frank
As Paulinho is modelling the new kit are we too assume we're keeping the worthless lump.
MrSpurs
muttley - good enough for what? good question and I suspect there would be many different answers...top4, winning anything, to beat west ham, to attract top players etc...and no it's not delusional to think a new manager can get more out of a team(even if that man has never won anything nor managed in the competitions we're in)..trouble is the same set of players...includes those that are getting older, slower and unsuitable we have a staff of c35-50 players a squad of 25 elite all with limited time at the top..and only twice a year can we do anything to improve that situation...not to do so is folly....we may not be a mega wealthy club but why is the 6th richest down at 19th place for net spend over the last 5 years? The elite clubs know how to leverage their brand, they know how to speculate to accumulate, they know that success on the pitch drives everything else forward...Levy knows...property...
shedboy2
MrSpurs. No!
MAN ON!
The worthless lump scored 8 goals for us last year - seems there are a lot more'worthless' lumps than Paulinho out there ....
Highgatespur
Frank - living in London, regular first team football, more money, I can see Davies signing for Tottenham.
MrSpurs
Highgate - Eight goals! wow I didn't realise that. Probably a bit too early for the Hall of fame?
MrSpurs
I'm not sure how many club chairmen are actually football experts. Maybe UEFA and the FA could set up some form of certificated course, akin to the coaching badge qualifications... Is Levy the chairman's equivalent to Sherwood?
MAN ON!
muttley - If lewis was putting his money in to build a legacy why would you expect him to sell? It is ridiculous to think a man that rich and that old would want to take money out of Spurs...but that's what it looks like...build the value, sell...in other words buy the club for less than 100m put none of your own money in (perhaps a loan that can be converted to shares and thus earn more than interest) use the money that could buy players to buy property and sell for c1b...a nice 900m margin....leave the club with a new stadium and the legacy?...how long will the extra 20k capacity take to pay off the 1b the new owner will want back....and that's before the new owner makes a profit...
shedboy2
paulinho decided after the charlie adam tackle nah not for me the leagues too tough
tarkan mardinCOYS
shedboy - Levy clearly knows sponsorship as well. First club to have domestic and european sponsors and when you track the turnover over a 5 year period you see the impact of his hard work there. We know he's primarily a money man but he's has been influential in pulling us away from Everton, Villa etc on the financial side of things. The problem is, we quite rightly don't want to be competing with them. We're looking upwards and that's his biggest challenge.
muttley
Hey Mr Spurs better than most of the others in the team - isn't it ? Let's not go down the road of selective positivism.... so come on besides EA and CE who else contributed more through goal scoring last year ? Leave your prejudice thoughts at the door ....
Highgatespur
this is why it had to be crucial we bought the majority of the players last season who had epl expirience
tarkan mardinCOYS
look at liverpool for instance.targetting epl players.
tarkan mardinCOYS
actually thinking about it...it's not ridiculous to think a Billionaire who earned a vast swathe of his wealth betting against the British tax payer and then taking his gains out of the country so that he can avoid paying tax would want to take money out of Spurs...he's greedy, he always tries to make more money....and keep the money he has...it's probable more ridiculous to think of him having the same morals and ethics as an everyday man...
shedboy2
I see Baldini is supposed to be in Italy working on a fee for Sandro's release, links also state he may well try and recruit Mattia Destro. He is a striker, we may need another, but he is exactly the same as Soldado in his style of play. He'll cost a fair wedge also.

Two things I'd like to add on this potential signing, firstly, why not Hernandez if we are in for a player in this style, although I actually believe Hernandez' all round game is far superior and he knows the prem.

Secondly, if we are to talk to Roma, the only player I want from there is Pjanic, a CM playmaker, a type we have missed so long since Geofspurs mate left.

Interesting to see if Yedlin lines up for the Sounders tonight. Could be a long old night for whomever is our LB.

Another appreciation of LFC ....
Highgatespur
muttley- Levy knows sponsorship from one side only....getting paid. Not the same as leveraging...

stop being puerile highgate.

Let's see how we play tonight, getting excited for the season now.

Kong, hope diddy has been kept fully updated on the matter Spurs and we have her approval! Lucky mascot may need a new kit tho!
Critical_Spur
We've come a long way since the Hotspur Cricket Club and the Tottenham marshes... I can't see that we've ever gone too far backwards in our history to be such eternal pessimists... Here's to the future of THFC and all who sail in her... I reserve my right to be jolly, enjoy the football and to stare unflinchingly proud in to the face of all this apparent, impending, doom and gloom... Form is temporary, class is permanent. (As shedboy likes to say)... Up the Spuds!
MAN ON!
shedboy2, noticing a distinct change in your approach to the support of Spurs... it's coming across as more interested in the demise of ENIC ... I always thought that the demise of the owners would inevitably lead to a detriment for THFC... your support of THFC always seem so strong.
Highgatespur
3-0 to Spurs (Lloris hat-trick).
Geofspurs
Must share this (sorry) ... My best mateís an artist and not too bothered about football (soccer) although he likes sport in general. Anyway, I dropped in today and he said heíd got something for me in his shed (I was hoping it was one of his three motor bikes) but, no .... he then gave me a 65cm x 40cm painting of Gareth Bale taken from a photo of him shooting at goal. It is brilliant (heís a very good artist) and typical of GB doing what he does best. Gotta love ya mates!
Geofspurs
Critical, Diddy is warming up for the season and getting ready for her mascot duties. She has high hopes, a tottenham baby outfit will do for now :)

Should people on VS be banned for Ďnegativityí?! It's as bad as abuse but in a different way Ox?! :-)

I used to love going to those games on the marshes ... bus service was shocking and it was a long walk.

Is Paulinho enjoying a rest or is he keeping fit, playing barefoot keepy-uppy on the Copacabana beach? Or, Is he just trying to stay awake for more than 5 minutes at a time? Are Liverpool after him?

by the way, are we missing spursbynature? I was waiting on a response from him but his posts vanished??

I am excited to see Spurs in action again tonight, but remember this is a pre season friendly and its the first run out an incomplete squad will have had under Poch. can we just enjoy it and try not to dissect everything after the game? a genuine plea!!

longtimespur
dublin-im sorry i should be singing the praises of paulinho.i do apologise
tarkan mardinCOYS
tarkan... Just do as your told.
MAN ON!
Highgatespur- my support is and always has been for Spurs...not ENIC and what is bad for them is not necessarily bad for THFC...for instance if ENIC sold Spurs for 60m that would be bad for them but potentially brilliant for Spurs! Whilst making 900m is potentially brilliant for ENIC it could be a disaster for Spurs (that's 900m not able to be spent on the team we actually all want to watch and see do well). So you see your premise 'the demise of the owners would inevitably lead to a detriment for THFC.' is not strictly accurate...I am positive...I'm not with all those negative nellies saying be careful what you wish for....I'm positive we could have better owners!...;)
shedboy2
Geofspurs, Diddy has the home baby outfit, growing out of it quick but stil looks good, her sister has the full home kit but only wears it to annoy her grandad who supports Chelsea.

Dublin Hotspur What`s wrong with you?

Picking holes in players is what fans do & as fans who get ripped off it is our prerogative.
Every fan at every club does it,we are their biggest critics & if players don`t deliver it will happen.
Whens the last time Spurs players delivered? the attitude of the club & many of the players has been dreadful for a long time.

They are millionaires have no care to what fans think of them, their world is completely different to ours.Spoilt brats who need putting in their place.
It`s not counter productive,Spurs players need to learn that if they want respect & this lifestyle then they have earn it.

Only player who earnt his wages last season was Lloris & he got deserved praise from the faithful, almost every fan.He was brilliant in talent, attitude & he should be our leader.
Many Spurs players should look at Lloris & learn from him,but too many want the cash the lifestyle but don`t want to work for it,it should not be tolerated.
How can you praise failures? It`s their job & at every workplace you will get hammered if your performances are unacceptable.
Too many fans are far too sensitive over the club & players,i`m not tip toeing around these rich mercenaries who exploit the fans at every opportunity.

But lets roll out the carpet for Mr levy & the players because they are such great people.Wait a minute they just kick a round object about, there`s nothing great about them & i hope to see a massive change of attitude in the players as the body language has been not good for years now.
No self respecting fan would allow to be fleeced so easily & still smile about it,time the football world got knocked down a peg or 2 back to reality.
Manchester Unites new ticket prices ? obscene

Geofspurs
shedboy2, I do understand your POV on ENIc - I can assure you are not on your own... IMO the only way ENIC will sell are Spurs are on a downturn or the stadium is built and all is done... no matter what atm we can't really afford the inevitable downturn of the team when an ownership changes... I am taking the route of a successful team / new stadia and then new owners will come thru...
Highgatespur
Fanny adams. I have learned my lesson from watching Spurs last season. I've decided that I'm only ever going back to WHL to watch us win. I'll pay on my way out, if we do.

Shedboy2, I have to say, and not for the first time, I agree with every word you say in your several posts on this article, regarding ENIC, Lewis, and Levy, and their approach, ambitions, and motives, involved in their ownership of THFC. I am just amazed that others fail to, or don't want to, see the obvious. You only have to see the effects elsewhere of careful and realistic levels of investment in the football side of a club, rather than conducting a purely fiscal approach to the financial side of the club's ownership. I also believe that given our history, our kudos as a club, our geographical home in London, now with planning consent for a new stadium, we could attract new owners with an interest in owning a successful football club, hopefully in the ego polishing business as Abramovich at Chelsea, the Mansours at City, the Quataris at PSG, the owners of Monaco or even Fenway Sports and the Glazers at Liverpool or Man Utd.
Frank
longtime ... I have tried to see it your way but I still canít decide if Iím right or youíre wrong ... all I know is that itís one of the two!

Another change and another 4 months to re-appraise. I can't wait for the pre-season kick-off. Whatever additions subtractions to the squad, POCH and co will do what is BEST for the team. Like ALL the previous managers, Levy will provide the necessary support, and in the way that he 'usually' can/does. Shedboy, you know I was referring to support wrt players (ins/outs)!. Of course if Poch if he does not delivery over a 'given' time scale then he will get what he deserves. TE - never could I have said that !!!!!
Highgatespur
Highgatespur, both Fenway and Glazers have consistently invested in players, and in Liverpool's case Fenway are extending the stadium, to be open in 2 years, where's the problem. Yes both clubs are in debt, but so what, this is not the supporter's business, their only concern must always be what happens on the pitch. If you ain't a shareholder, let others worry about the debts.

if you look at our squads, senior and development, we have 32 players that do not qualify under the u-21 rule. we have 15 midfielders in our senior squad alone. so if, as most agree, we need a left back, centre half and striker, we then need to sell or loan ten of these players on top of any younger development players we want to loan. so mr baldini is going to be quite busy !
superspur74
Superspur74 I think the qualifying dob are not necessarily start of season - could be the previous January ...
Highgatespur
Superspur .... I donít see any need for more strikers, at least not until reviewing things in January. We do need a LB and CB Ė maybe 2 CBs depending on if Sandro is staying and how fit Kaboul is, imo.
Geofspurs
Not bad HGS! LOL.
Thats Entertainment
highgate, the rule for this season is anyone who becomes 21 after 1st jan 2014. very sad that i went to the trouble of checking them all, i know but 32 is the number. in our development squad we have khumalo, ceballos, obika and fredericks in the 32. if you add in ryan mason and falque from the first team thats 5 to go ( excluding fredericks of course ) i would add bae, dawson (better replacement assumed ) siggy and then probably need 2 more midfielders out. that allows us 3 in. home grown rules further complicate matters. havn't the time or inclination to get into that ! what do you think ?
superspur74
just to clarify, anyone that turns 21 after 1st jan this year is under 21 for the coming season.

highgate, it is a pretty damning assessment of baldini squad management ( assuming that is one of his roles ) that we have such a bloated unbalanced squad. ideally in my opinion in a 25 you should have 3gk, 9 defenders, 10 mids and 3 strikers. 15 mids in the first team squad is crazy. we do also seem to have too many hangers on. in my opinion once a player is ineligible under the under 21 rule they should be good enough for at least first team back up or they should be gone. if we hold onto them all we are doing is ruining any chance they have of making some sort of career in the game while also inhibiting the next wave coming behind them of making an impact.

I think the squad has been there well before baldinis time... I agree with you re the younger players ... But also with the likes of Townsend and Lennon - just too much sentimentality around for the dross ... I blame the whole structure at the club not just individuals .... You've must have read my comments I have made previously on this so I won't bore you by repeating but IMO there are lots there and others have been there milking off the club...

looking at our development squad we have some very promising young players like veljkovic, pritchard, fredericks, gomelt, coulthirst and coulibaly. these are the guys we need to focus on by moving on the aforementioned. grant hall is also over 21 as is fredericks so baldini needs to clear the logjam. also notice that our obsession with midfielders extends to the academy where we only have 2 defenders between year one and two but 10 midfielders. squad management at its finest.
superspur74
do we ignore the real issues with a blotted and unbalanced squad and that is that when you constantly chop and change managers, you struggle to get balance, as the offloading of players is often impossible without a big pay off, something that we don't seem to do.
oxfordspur
the squad imbalance at academy level also calls into question what our top youth man tim sherwood was doing. i know academies are about finding and developing the best talent but surely we need some balance. it looks like ossie ardiles was in charge of underage recruitment and development ! who needs defenders eh ? the middle third of all our pitches at the training ground must be worn out from the 30 or so midfielders in our system running around in circles ( scott parker style) trying to find some space to operate in !
superspur74
Excellent point Ox - I really thought someone other than the manager wears deciding on the youth and U21 - Chris Ramsay et al ?
Highgatespur
oxforspur, i take your point, it is relevant at senior level. my point though is that this issue seems to be even more apparent at development and academy level. and that is nothing to do with the head coach or manager. that is what baldini, sherwood and ramsey were and in baldinis case are responsible for. we need to be more ruthless with younger players and once they get to the cut off point, use them or lose them. there really should not be anyone over the u-21 cut off point in our squad that doesn't have a realistic chance of first team football. if there are they are only stifling the development of those coming behind.

i know there seems to be a policy of holding onto young players too long to keep loaning them out to eventually get some transfer fee for them. but i would have thought that the relative peanuts we eventually get for them is hardly worth it. plus it is not what our underage development should be focused on. hope pele doesn't latch onto this and start another enic bashing rant !!

Here's the thing folks, and I believe is of something that a lot of people, in this instant gratification society, have completely lost sight. The fans endure. Owners, players, coaches come and go. The board, comes and goes. So, it really doesn't depend on the board whether we, the fans, make WHL a fortress or not. It is up to the fans. It's either to the fans' credit or it's to the fans' shame. Either way, it hangs on the fans. They pay their money and, have, like the players, become so entitled. AVB, who was speaking for the players, was right. Harry basically said the same.

Look, none of what I would like to see suggests that fans cannot be critical of what is going on. In fact, that is the right of the fans. Should it take place at WHL is where the question lies. IMO, at WHL, regardless of the score, regardless of the performance, the fans should be behind every single player, every manager with every fibre of their being. We should be picking up the players and exhorting them on to great heights. Instead, the fans sit there on their hands waiting for the players to lift them. They pay the money. They have the right.

Please ask yourself which way works better for you? Is it better to come to WHL and wait to be entertained before you become part of the show, or is it better to come to WHL and kick the show off and get the players wanting to give everything to deserve what we the fans give them. For me, it's the latter. That way, every game is a party, win, lose or draw. It's just that I suspect that there'd be a lot more winning if we, the fans, stopped worrying about all of the other crap and just came to the game to enjoy the game and "OUR TEAM". Then, after the game, feel free to discuss in pubs, rant and rail as is appropriate on forums etc. There is nothing wrong with constructive criticism. I just see no value in it at WHL. If you wish to protest, do it in a fashion that still supports "OUR TEAM" but gets the attention of the ownership group. Stop buying beer, and merchandise at the Lane and the effect will be felt without affecting the team on the pitch.

On game day, WHL should be a fortress. The fans are the ones responsible for creating that atmosphere. The players are the ones to go out and make sure that the result matches the intimidation. Philadelphia, regardless of the sports team, regardless of their place in the standings, is an awful place for visiting teams and fans to go. A trip to WHL should be dreaded by anyone who is not SPURS. COYS

peterballb: I totally agree with you. I've said as much myself, many times. It's what our away fans do but WHL can be a dire and quiet place to be on occasion. Far too often it's the away support that's heard above the home crowd and that's wrong.
MAN ON!
The fans have a huge effect. When you have 32k Spurs fans chanting Come on You Spurs or singing and stomping and clapping to When the Spurs Come Marching there is nothing the away fans can do. The players hear it. And I can guarantee that if you are an opposition player and the tide seems to be turning in the match that has a huge effect on concentration and focus. It ramps up pressure. You have that atmosphere from the start, you get a couple of goals early and the game is done. The other team is just trying not to get embarrassed. It's what Liverpool did last season. Their defence was poor and old, but when the goals started going in, the only question was, how many? This atmosphere needs to be created every match regardless of all the garbage away from the pitch. COYS

Can somebody please explain to me why both Khamalo and Obika are still at Spurs, they are not, or ever have been, or ever will be good enough to get into a Spurs side, so why persevere with them, and that goes for a fair few others as well. We are not ruthless enough in culling, all but the outstanding prospects, those with a realistic potential of first team selection in the near future, the rest are just cluttering the place up.
Frank
peterballb this home crowd singing is a concern for anumber of clubs, in fact we often out sing the home crowd at the away games (unless they were 3-0 up within the first 20 mins.), Thus the singing sections at Manure and the emptycrates along with a few others. The WHL singing has been effected by the yid factor, new players quite often, no new songs in recent times, LBH strenuous H+S regs (1882 club), the lack of development of the new stadium has led to a lot of disillusionment ... hopefully with events of the close will get the noise up again,
