Seattle vs Spurs

Tottenham face the first of three American opponents tonight, as they start their pre season workout against Seattle.

With Adebayor, Sandro and Chiriches injured and the World Cup players still to return, it will be a somewhat makeshift team, as is the usual routine in early warm up games, but when there is a new manager, even with no new players, it often gives a little hint at what may be and who is and isn`t in his plans.

Talk that Sandro isn`t injured and is closing in on a move to Italy or wherever, may be true, but so much can and probably will happen over the next few weeks, before we face west Ham in the opening Prem game. Is tonight a chance for Michael Dawson to show his quality and save his Spurs career?

What chance for Soldado, Lamela or whoever else to recover from disappointing seasons to prove their worth. Though usually disappointing, half paced affairs, opening pre season games are very much must see football, regardless of the result and performance for what happens off, as much as on the pitch.

It will be interesting to see what influence Poch has had on the team, in terms of shape and attitude, even if we have only minor clues of the team personnel. Some selections will as such pick themselves. Friedel in goal, Dawson and Kaboul in defence, with Rose/Fryers and Walker/Naughton at Full back. It will also be interesting to see if and where the likes of Archer, Fredericks and Veljkovic, Mason, Falque and a few others

With Paulinho, Dembele, Bentaleb and Sandro missing, is this a game for Capoue to impress or just keep the place warn for Morgan Schneiderlin? Alongside him, will we see Tom Carroll get some much needed game time? The reality is that we are severely lacking senior midfield numbers on this tour. Will this be the time we see Lewis Holtby move from No10 to No6?

Lennon, Townsend and hopefully Lamela will be available, Eriksen, Holtby and the wherever bound Sigurdsson, will make up the creative spaces behind, the only two experienced (ish) strikers of Soldado and Harry Kane. Will there be any surprise appearances? Has Poch identified a little known gem from the development squad and we get to be amazed at the quality of their play? I have no idea, but this is what excites us about pre season games or at least should do...

The World Cup should've really raised the exposure for football (soccer) in the USA. It'd be nice to see a good attendance/atmosphere.
Critical_Spur
Clint plays for them. Not Eastwood, Dempsey.
MAN ON!
They do have a tidy RB in the shape of one Yedlin. Impressed at the World Cup, not sure if he will feature, seems to be in the midst of a drawn out move to Roma.

The World Cup was fun but it will be good to get back to club football again, even if as a friendly, the widening of mental horizons for players in all team involved in the Spurs tour, and as a means of Spurs players getting rid of 'rustiness' after the summer layoff. Clint Dempsey will ensure it is a competitive affair and it will be good to see him playing again after his fine performances for the USA.
Airwave
For SEattle, Dempsey and Obefemi Martins are very good up front. Frei is excellent in net. BUT, the one to watch and appreciate is Yedlin. He will be playing in Europe in the next few years. He suits a Klinsmann system to a T and is really good on the fundamentals. Perhaps the best young American player out there atm.

Should be an interesting match. It is always tough to gauge anything from these because there will be wholesale changes for both sides at the half which always makes the game disjointed. Seattle is in late-season form whereas we are in pre-season. Be most interested to see how hungry players like Fredericks and Kane look. I am also expecting players like Soldado and Lamela to look very fit. They should have huge things to prove to the team, the fans and most importantly, themselves. COYS
peterballb
Critical it's 3-0 for Geof! interesting after what MRP said about future signings! Looking forward to the newbies ...
Highgatespur
A good run out to see how the players are reacting to Poch's ideas. Be good to see most of the youngsters getting game time during these 3 matches. Not expecting a lot as Seattle will be much fitter than we are. It's just great to have Spurs back playing again. COYS
longtimespur
As Peter said, can't really read too much into the match as a whole but if friendlies have taught us anything. The first half team will consist of the XI that have impressed the manager the most so far/those he thinks can start away to the spammers. Second half will be run outs for those close to the starting XI. FIrst half performance will be interesting. Personally I think that the side that starts against Defoes team will be the one that starts the season, not including new recruits.
devils-advocaat
I'd personally try Lamela as a second striker tonight. Give him a bit of freedom to move across the front line and get in space without having to think about tracking back. Afterall, he's more about trickery, slick through balls and a left footed drive rather than pace, power and athleticism. This is a good opportunity for some to save their careers or prove their worth so my starting XI would be: Friedel

Walker, Dawson, Kaboul, Rose

Townsend, Capoue, Holtby, Eriksen

Lamela

Soldado
bernio3000
Just some info on Seattle, from an american :-) ....... seattle is currently the best mls team out there. Have splashed cash on proven epl players such as Dempsey. Microsoft pays them a lot as their shirt sponsor (levy take note) so they have money. They play in an nfl stadium and will have about 64,000 fans attending the game. The weather in the nw USA is similar to the UK. Usually rainy, not much humidity, so the players should be ok. Also, they play on a grass/astro turf mix pitch. Should be interesting to see how the lads take to it.
jefferyhyde
By the way, is there a way of preventing adverts from starting automatically? One of the reasons why I rarely come on this site any more is because of the ads, which is a shame because that aside, I think it's a cracking place to talk all things Spurs.
bernio3000
bernio... Download an app called adblock. There are both PC and Mac versions.
MAN ON!
4-2-3-1 for me. Loris Walker, dawson, Kabul, fryers Hilton, capoue Lamela, Eriksen, Townsend Soledad
jefferyhyde
It will be possible for players to blot their copy books in front of Pochettino, though I don't know how hard a taskmaster he is. He may just reiterate to any offending individual what it was he was asked to work on or to do and leave it at that. However, not so tense an affair that players like Lamela and Soldado can't express themselves for fear of some bloody goal they're supposed to score. Get those two playing again and stay off their backs, get in welcome loan returnees Holtby and Carroll, and let's have Capoue and Eriksen work something out. Plus youngsters, because all this is fun, it is serious, it is ambassadorial, it is getting the gears moving again.
Airwave
bernio3000-i used to get too many ads but now i have ad blocker installed and it is fine now.

I think the best we can get from this tour is seeing how senior players that do get time play, the likes of Dawson, Kaboul, Lennon, Townsend, Eriksen, Walker, Rose, Siggy, Soldado, Capoue for example. We can at least make an comparison from last season, to see if they do anything different.

I don't think we can do the same with Lamela because he didn't play enough, he is unknown quantity but we will see what he has in his locker. As for formations, players positions we may not get too many insights as we are too many short and I expect some youngsters will get playing time.

It's the senior players that I am interested in finding out 'how' they play, and also looking forward to seeing some youngsters to see if they could be good enough, like Carroll, Mason, Federicks and so forth.

What I don't like about our pre season is we always seem to be a little behind other top teams, Liverpool will have played two to our one. I wish we did the usa tour a little sooner or get a game in before the tour. I also question whether our pre season games are strong enough opposition at times.

OH YEAH!!!

Anyone know where Eriksen actually wants to play, or where he played for Ajax?
T.H.F.Chris
BSF, the pre-season this summer may have been affected by the focus of so much of our part of the football world on the World Cup. Different in countries where this may be mid-season for them. Pre-seasons go amiss not so much for lateness as when they prove too taxing, cause serious injuries and so unsettle plans for the forthcoming Premier League season. Indifferent results don't matter unless they border on the humiliating. That can be a necessary wake-up call though. Or a good pre-season can mislead planners into thinking that everything will work out fine longer term. As for supposed lateness, there need to be enough later games after the North American tour to accommodate returnees from the World Cup.
Airwave
Marketing question - when 70% or something like that of the population are overweight! why is the new Spurs shirts for adults fitted, slim fit to you or me. Do you think anyone from UA has ever visited a match or do they think football fans are as fit as the players, Ben Arfa excepted.
Chelmspur
Can watch the game on Spurs TV. Members can register to view all the USA games for free.
Chelmspur
Airwave-I understand what your saying. I do agree we need enough games after the USA tour for the senior players who are missing this tour, have we enough booked! Not sure we have, but I think sometimes they do a game or two behind closed doors.
BigSpursFan
C.O.Y.S - So glad we are back. Really excited to see the lads and the new regime working together. Seems to me Poch is being given time at the club from ssn - saying his first task is to get the footballing philosophy right first. He also said we are different to southampton, we are a big club that needs to win. So he recognises the task ahead, I am liking what I hear from him, and what the lads are saying about him. Really hope this is the man finally to bring us some silverware and some great football.

LTS, well into the game I see.... just hoping a few of the players are being put on the shop window... looking forward to seeing Yedin and Dempsey and refreshing to see the Spurs again w/o the dynamic duo...
Highgatespur
tarkan, you would assume that the vast majority of the players will only play 45 mins, and its surely better to have a mixed squad, as opposed to a first team and reserve for this, when the main objective is to get fitness as opposed to team cohesion. Oh and of course we need to look good for the sponsors...

DAWSON & FRYERS HAVE NO CLUE.. PLEASE GOD WE REPLACE DAWSON WITH LOVREN, VLAAR OR SOMEONE OF QUALITY.

Tarkan I thought our backline gave him a free run at our goal for charitable reasons, turns out dawson was trying to stop him!
Slurms McKenzie
Best players imo Holtby, Carroll, with Kane working hard, Rose doing better than usual and that is it. Very poor defensively especially Dawson and poor Fryers he is struggling as Dawson is having a shocker. Towsend poor, Capoue not doing much, expected more from him. naughton doing alright similar to last season. Lennon not in game, not happy with Townsend and Lennons positioning, Lennon wil only do his best RW and Townsend doesn't seem to want to play LW - just hoping we see Lamela and Eriksen and we see improvements. Defensively is a huge problem. Not sure Dawson likes to play out from the back, it shows, I like the guy but I think he has passed it as a starter these days.
BigSpursFan
What disturbs me is I don't see a plan or phillosophy here, its obvious Poch ideas are not being seen.
BigSpursFan
Veljkovic - really want to see him play again... i think he could be a real gem, just like Benteleb.

Ceballos to get a game today... he was the kid-prodigy at Barcelona.. lets see what he has..

Yidmarks
BSF - I think his philosophy works... the players are the problem.. there will be a big difference with a bit of quality on the pitch in the second half.
Yidmarks
I think you can definitely see patterns in play and movement. We are zipping the ball around quickly in their half with good movement. We are pressing high an getting three four men around the opponent who has the ball which is good. The problem we have is when our midfield is bypassed the defence look a mess. The defenders have also struggled to play from the back today as well. In other words I'm hopeful that with more game time an work with the team as well as the inclusion of our first choice defenders with a signing or two we will see big improvements. I'm already enjoying our football more than I did under Sherwood purely because I can see evidence of a style and system
BrooksySpurs
Our first game was never going to be pretty and in one sense its good to see our weaknesses so obviously exposed! Makes improvements alot easier to identify!
Slurms McKenzie
Holtby and Rose have been our players of the half. Kane has worked well up top. Dawson and Townsend have looked so off the pace. my early thoughts on Andros was that he has learned nothing in a year
oxfordspur
My 2 pence worth. Carroll, Kane and Holtby. Quality play for the opening goal. Rose is playing very well. Capoue is making it look easy. His anticipation in the middle has been impressive. Lost count how many times he nicked the ball. Not much from him offensively but quietly going about his business. Dawson is having a mare. His distribution is letting him down. At least he's trying. Clearly uncomfortable but I guess Pocho is giving them licence to pass from the back. Holtby stands out and Naughton is doing ok. COYS!
a.k.a.james1spurs
First half showed our customary charitable defending, no change from last season. If Dawson's intention was to convince MP that he should be sold, and replaced ASAP, he absolutely succeeded, he was awful. The penalty was a penalty all day long, he gave the ball away 4 or 5 times, and hardly won a ball in the air, he is slow both physically and mentally, totally pedestrian, his time is well and truly up, he should be out. Some of the forward play was promising to a degree, but we often struggle to keep the ball. The goal was well worked, and I liked Holtby's energy. It was 20 mins in before we knew Lennon was playing, and Townsend was well Townsend, running in straight lines until he is tackled or falls over. I know it was a first outing and there were many missing but presumably they were all 25 squad contenders, as such there needs to be a massive improvement especially at the back in time for WH away on 16th August. I thought naughton and Rose did OK, Capoue was largely anonymous and it worries me to see Zeke Fryirs continually running round the ball to get it on his left peg. friedel should be told he can use his hands rather than to try and save everything with his feet.
Frank
68 secinds into second half and we already look more solid at the back, and we seem to have a more attacking edge.

Durbanspur
Just heard on the commentary. Ugo Ehiogue to be recruited as a coach for the development squad??? What do we all think of that?
Cleveland ARTSPURS
Better second half the youngsters did better than some of our senior players. Soldado did nothing to impress me or show me he will be suited to Poch style.

It was a good run out but disappointed with Lennon, Townsend, Capoue, Dawson, but thought Holtby was best player with Carroll
BigSpursFan

a.k.a.james1spurs
Ah feck it, twas a good opening preseason game, what you want - plenty of goals and entertainment and Soldado showing a bit more feistiness! Second half was big improvement, wonder strike from Alonso for their second, I'm sure some will be worried that we scored most of our goals from set-pieces ;-). But Falque headed wide from a Soldado flick and we could have had another goal in the second half. If I was Lennon or Townsend I'd be worried watching Lamela, Ceballos and Falque. Yedlin really isn't all that! Fryers better at LB then CB people and was still missing for their third! Kaboul miles better then Dawson and Kaboul had Veljkovic as his defensive partner!
Slurms McKenzie
Cleveland, he's been working for us a few years now - think in the U 17's
Durbanspur
Left wing in the first half was a big problem, second half we caused all their problems down that side! Capoue was solid nothing more rotation player on that evidence but then He had no options either wide right or left. Holtby full of energy and aswell taken goal! Rose did well covering the left with no assistance. Carrol again solid and looks like a useful squad player.

Gripes: Dawson's performance no excuse he's had four weeks off and look like he'd last kicked a ball 14 months ago. fryers was all at sea not sure if it was because of Dawson or because he's just not a CB. I would have liked to see Lennon on the right and Townsend on the left wing or was this a case of Pochettino trying to find a spot for Lennon in his team?? Lack of attacking threat in the first half was really disappointing reminded me of everything that was wrong with AVB's last few months!!!!
Slurms McKenzie
@Durbanspur, I didn't realise that, not such big news after all lol. Anyway, entertaining match, thought Ceballos and Falque did really well.

Really liked Lamela when he came on, bit of bite to his game and not without skill. Rose ok, but still kept getting caught up field. Dawson your time is up, great servant to the club, but the pace of the game is too much for him. Brad had good time in goal despite 3 getting past him. Enjoyed the game rather 3-3 than 0-0. COYS
Chelmspur
It was great to see Spurs back in action, I think we have solved a few issues with the wider squad based on second half performance. However first eleven or fifteen is a bigger worry. Lennon, townsend, dawson, and Fryers as a Cb did not look comfortable or up for it. Two more games to go for these lads but the signs aren't good maybe Dawson might pick up an MLS contract out there? If Davies is signed and Rose can perform to that standard consistently then maybe LB has been solved! Cb need urgent attention and we are very weak on the left wing on the right we now have lamela, cebellos, lennon, townsend, for the one position time to moveon lennon and townsend.
Slurms McKenzie

I thought naughton and Rose did OK, Capoue was largely anonymous and it worries me to see Zeke Fryirs continually running round the ball to get it on his left peg. friedel should be told he can use his hands rather than to try and save everything with his feet.

nice wind up man on you got them going. i remember we won all our pre season games smashed roma 5-0 we had super keane, berbatoss, bentdefoe. i wouldnt read to much in to this, like any other team its to get noticed and get money nothing more.
123spurs
Second half, nice to see some of the younger players given a run plus Soldado and Lamela. Kaboul introduced at back, but still looked totally open through the middle, we seriously need a CB to partner Vertonghen. No great creativity in MF, we still are in dire need of a player to dictate the pace, play the killer pass, be the fulcrum, play the Pirlo role. We have Christian Eriksen who is a richly talented player, but he is alone in having the creativity we need. We have run around merchants like Holtby, lazy loping about, achieving little like Dembele, box to box on a good day like Paulinho, defensive MFers like Sandro (for now), and Capoue and Benteleb, but we lack creativity. Will Carroll and the other youngsters step up, the jury is out. If we get Ben Davies, I think we should bid for Ron Vlar, a striker, and back up for Lloris, Friedel is no longer a PL keeper, and Archer is too big a risk. This is what I would like to see, but I fear that we may get Davies and that will be that.
Frank
123 - thus 3-3 draw was an excellent result except for the kerfuffle at the end. 2nd half was pleasing... the camera was too far away I thought than usual.
Highgatespur
Well, I must admit, I looked forward to the game and enjoyed it for what it was intended for. One or two posters have already pointed out definite signs of a different style being introduced. Crisp passing and attempts at building from the back. However, the latter is a culture shock to our defenders, especially Daws, but really that is the approach being adopted by top teams. What's the point of hoofing and giving away possession when two quick passes from the back can get the ball in the oppo's half?. 3-3 was fair and value for money entertainment for BOTH fans. Nice also to see a good crowd.

I also agree about Rose, who played a more restrained game, i.e., defending 1st attacking secondary. I think he will come through it and will be OK. This brings me to the point of peeps' unfair writing off of some of our players after last season. Being able to see Rose adapting gives me confidence that Poch CAN work miracles. Not getting carried away, but early signs are good. Well done all the 'kids'. Looking forward to the next game!
Critical_Spur
Dawson struggled a bit, what with mis-hits, slowness and over-ambitious passing. Townsend tries to do too much with the ball, when he could pass it. Rather like Nauighton, running up the right with the ball early in second half only to shoot from edge of penalty area through a clump of players when there were 3-4 Spurs players upfront to his left. Waste of effort, and a need for sessions on better decision-making. Spurs good going forward, and some lovely swift passing in getting there, but struggling in defence.
Airwave
havent deen the game, so ill take your word for it.
123spurs
Is there anything significant in Sigurdson being withdrawn from the Spurs starting X1 20 minutes before the start. Could it be the Davies/Sigurdson deal with Swansea is close, or is just me wishful thinking that at last we are going to do something.
Frank
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-2698386/Tottenham-set-sign-Swansea-duo-Ben-Davies-Michael-Vorm-Gylfi-Sigurdsson-going-way.html

Whilst the headline says, "set to sign", the article itself states "Davies, a 21-year-old Wales international, has moved to White Hart Lane". Also Confirms Vorm and Siggy in the deal.
Critical_Spur
May be Dawson will be withdrawn 20 mins before the next game! ......and my guess is that Sandro's injury is a 'transfer injury' as per Bale last season and will be a lastminute.com Levy special!.
Critical_Spur
Critical - Dawson looked a bit spent today didn't he ? Hate when that happens to liked and respected players.
Highgatespur
Highgate. Agree RE Dawson. I've always defended him, but I think it's time for Daws to take a back seat. He looked all at sea today, would hate for the fans to really turn against him.
Cleveland ARTSPURS
Dawson, lennon, Townsend.......daws, you just aren't the quality we need anymore, but thanks for your service. Lennon, you used to be fast, well that is gone and you can't do anything else. Townsend, you are greedy and think you are way better than you actually are, and you are the most frustrating player in a spurs shirt.
jefferyhyde
Liked what I saw from our little German holtby, ran like crazy and a headed goal! Who saw that coming????? I think if poch plays him in a deeper role, the through balls will be coming left and right. Capoue didnt have a bad game, quiet but put in a good foot every now and then. K aboul didnt look bad except for when he tried to set an offside trap on Seattle's last goal. Wtf was fryers doing on that?! He just watched the tap in. Think lamela will own the rw by aug 16. Also think cellabos is ready for a prem loan, or at least a high championship club....
jefferyhyde
Well, it's pretty obvious from that showing there is alot of work still to do. The bacvk four were predictably shambolic and this area needs sorting out asap. Dawson is just not good enough anymore nor is Naughton, Rose, Fredricks and Fryers don't instill me with any confidence at all. If we stick with these then it will be a long long season just like last season.
pratts bottom
Not seen enough of Cellabos but judging on his cameo performance, he looks ready for the next level jefferyhyde. He has the talent and the desire. I trust Pocho so I'm hoping to see more of him in action. COYS!

No match report from myself on this one. Far too early to give a fair appraisal on how players performed. I intend to do a write up after Wednesday's match enabling me to maybe take points from this game into account also.

I stated the other day that I felt we could well be seeing Ceballos and Falque feature for Spurs in the prem at times this season, after last nights performance, I still stand by that belief. Defence still looed shaky at times, and once more it was easy to see how we topped the charts in the top 5 leagues in Europe for defensive mistakes leading to goals.

Rose did well, and the youngsters gave a good account of themselves. There were clear indications that the intensity had been upped, numerous players closing down as a unit. Hard to judge how much of a negative effect the pitch would have had on our passing game, and let's not forget, the Sounders are currently right up there at the top in MLS soccer.

Numerous first teamers to return, but a big positive regarding youth waiting in the wings to step in. I also liked the way that Falque and Ceballos were prepared to take a man on with pace, add Lamela to this and it seemed very promising. Far too early to critique fairly, so whilst thinking their are areas of concern still to be worked on, this match was exactly that, a training and fitness exercise. As long as I remember that and study for improvement, I'll take it for what it is, good and bad. Nice to see the lads playing once more, even if it is only "Soccer."
cider spurs
Just watched game again, plenty to be pleased about, liked the look of Falque. caught asleep for 2nd goal, lack of pace at back, no surprise with Dawson and Townsend, both need selling asap COYS.

3-3 and just about what was expected. The main object of the exercise was to get some game time and match fitness and that was achieved. Anyone expecting something magical to happen because of a new manager is not based in the real world. It would be easy to say that the defence looked shaky, the midfield lacked some punch, and we may have been lucky to get the draw ... but that analysis would be irrelevant given the context of the game. It was great to see some of the young players gaining some experience. I thought they did pretty well and there could be some future promise there. The next two games offer more of the same and then it all becomes a bit more serious with the final pre-season games at the Lane when our returning world cup ‘stars’ get into the action. All good, imo ... COYS!
Geofspurs
Geofspurs, defence was shaky but once this is addressed by MP, with some new additions and solid tactics, I think we will surprise a lot of our critics COYS.
Thats Entertainment
Just seen the highlights, nothing wow, but nice to see some youngsters given a go. Any reason you think Ericksen and Walker were not used. I thought that was a strange choice. anyway we have about 7 or 8 players still to come back from Holidays. Like everyone our back 4 still look like they are on Holiday, lol. Be nice to hear today or tomorrow that Davies has signed. Just a question, do you think it would be worth a punt on Pirlo. bring on Wednesday.
markyboy40
No point in Pirlo, we need to solve our problems not put stop gaps in place. Cider is right we can only judge the squad after the three games but so far we've learned that we were right, we need LB possibly 2 CB and a left winger other then that we looked fairly sorted across the squad. Hopefully monday will see a new LB and reserve keeper and two problems solved. Just a quick mention for Brad he was Man of the Match for me, mainly because of all the work his back line made for him.
Slurms McKenzie
Changed my mind. Just submitted a quick post match article. Nothing too informative, so fore warning, apologies for the quickly assembled article. ;-)
cider spurs
Have my doubts that Friedel should be our back up keeper. I blame him for the 1st SS' goal....i.e...was a floated ball in, that he should have me for. Both Dawson and Kaboul had shaky games.....at fault for the other SS'goals. Fredericks....2 quick runs down the right and 2 end products..i.e...decent crosses.....one of which Soldado should have done better on. Soldado....a "Lie ability"....for me. Too temperamental. Just another reason why spurs need another top striker.....i.e..4 in a 25 man squad. Pleased we are being linked with Vorm' ..ideal back up goalkeeper.
82spursdebut
We have two young goalkeepers in the squad, so I'm not sure why one of them was not given some game time last night. Perhaps we'll at least see Archer play in the next one or two.
MAN ON!
Friedel > floated ball in....that he should have come for.

Oops....sorry my mistake.....I'm referring to the Dempsey near header miss...in the first half. For the Friedel....staticness.

cider spurs... Morning. Thanks.
MAN ON!
I agree....it's time to give Archer some proper game time. We need to see if he could handle first team action / the prem'. Lloris.....will always be a risk..of sendings off / injury.....suspensions etc.
82spursdebut
I'm sure Brad is being used for PR purposes as much as anything, after all, we know exactly what he's capable of. It could also be that Poch wanted an experienced pair of hands for the opener.
MAN ON!
I look forward to your write-up cider as I've not seen any of the match. (I'm desperate for my first Spurs match fix of the season). I'll have to wait until Wednesday.
MAN ON!
Yes, no doubt.....Brad' is a great servant...but also canny in knowing he doesn't want a Collision that would cost him, for his impending retirement. Fair enough.....but, their are times when a keeper must be very mobile / commanding of their box.....even if it risks getting hurt.
82spursdebut
On Pirlo: I can't see how he would fit in. We need to speed up our midfield, not slow it down. Pirlo is fantastic but he doesn't run and he doesn't tackle. I can't see him being suitable for Poch's game or indeed the PL.
MAN ON!
MAN ON!...I have written a wee little post match article. Not very informative, but a platform for debate nonetheless. Not really picked the bones out of any specific player performances and certainly nothing in depth. As stated way too early to fairly assess.

I enjoyed the game although not the presentation by BT Sport. Was it just the americanisation? Just what a "friendly" should be. Main point in the game was that it showed MP how desperate we are for CB's. Also how much practice we need to control the ball on the first touch. (Maybe the artificial surface didn't help). Overall first-half defensively poor although Rose was nowhere near the worst. Passing from the back was terrible at times, mainly Dawson but all 4 at times found opponents. Holtby was immense, Capoue wasn't noticed but he cut out so much and sublime ball to Soldado in the second half. His first touch and movement then won him the penalty. Sadly I didn't realise Carroll was on the pitch in the first half or that Siggy wasn't. lol. Better defense 2nd half and so an improved performance from all the team. Good movement with "and without" the ball throughout the game along with high tempo pressing. Youngsters all acquitted themselves well. Nice to see Lamela playing in our colours again too. Entertainment for the locals and maybe converted a few more supporters from USA to our beloved team. Looking forward to the next.
longtimespur
Archer was ill and not considered for selection last night.
Frank
Holtby the biggest positive, Dawson again the biggest negative. Thought Capoue did his job well actually, nothing going fwd, but covered the space in midfield and kept winning ball back.
Windlespur
Apparently Lamela had to go to the touchline for minor treatment and water poured over his head. I am afraid whether he is too frail and fragile for the rigours of our 50+ game season in the PL, FAC, CC, and EL.
Frank
LTS sorry to hear you missed the first goal - sublime finishing header from holtby but it was bettered by the two passes from Kane and Carroll. Thought it was good for what it was ! COTMS!!!
Highgatespur
Interesting 2 page spread of an in depth interview with MP in today's Sun. apparently he has been instructed that we have to "sell to buy", before buying, and together with the club unwilling to take a hit on outgoing players, he has missed out on targets, and he expects very little change to the squad this summer. I cannot help but feel a bit sorry for the bloke, he has been appointed in front of probably better qualified candidates, and will be judged on results and PL position as can only be expected, but has not really been provided with the tools to really do the job, and give it a good go.Having said that, he is only being treated in the same way as every manager in the last 14 years, and will no doubt suffer the same ultimate fate.
Frank
Frank come on did you seriously think that the club needed or wanted another big launch into the transfer market ? I know this will feed into your negativity but the transfer market hasn't bought a surprise yet ? Sell to buy is the most sensible approach to manage a 'bloated' squad or would you want even a bigger squad like hr used to have....
Highgatespur
HGS, what did you think of the passing? at times I thought we looked quite slick, impressed for first game, barring Dawson and Townsend, woeful! COYS!!!
Thats Entertainment
The passing was good, much of it. Accurate and fast, usually with one or two Spurs players ready to receive. Fairly good at getting the ball back, too. The known weaknesses were evident. Good to see younger players who have been names to most supporters, getting exposure.
Airwave
TE thought it was generally good but had to remind myself of the plastic pitch. But it didn't seem to have that much of an effect on some... Unfortunately ... I was impressed with the second half ... It showed how much andros and azza have stayed still when compared to the younger ones... It's time for the spurs version of MRP's Babes !!! LOL; IMO it's nomoreseason for Azza although mr Rose did ok ...
Highgatespur
Highgatespur, it is acknowledged, or should be by now, that last season's transfer spree was a mistake, with the wrong players being signed for exorbitant fees, this happens, and resulted in our large squad (incidentally probably still not as large as some), rather than just say that's it, we can't sign anybody because we have too many players in spite of the fact that half of them aren't good enough, we must sell to buy, even though we can't shift players, because Levy still wants top dollar for failures. So we have a new coach who is now saying he has missed out on his targets due to this policy. Contrast this with Liverpool, Dalglish went on a mad spree with the likes of Carroll, Downing, and others coming in, they failed so when they outed Dalglish and appointed Rodgers there was a clear out of the players he didn't want, and he built his own team very quickly, so that in 2 seasons he is in the CL, with a PL runner up place. That's giving a new coach a chance.
Frank
It's with a huge lump in the throat that I remember John White, tragically killed by lightning on the golf course, 50 years ago. He was a genious and one of the best players I ever saw in a Spurs shirt, ranking alongside notably Mackay, Gasgoine, and Hoddle, amongst many others.
