Seattle vs Spurs

Tottenham face the first of three American opponents tonight, as they start their pre season workout against Seattle.

With Adebayor, Sandro and Chiriches injured and the World Cup players still to return, it will be a somewhat makeshift team, as is the usual routine in early warm up games, but when there is a new manager, even with no new players, it often gives a little hint at what may be and who is and isn`t in his plans.

Talk that Sandro isn`t injured and is closing in on a move to Italy or wherever, may be true, but so much can and probably will happen over the next few weeks, before we face west Ham in the opening Prem game. Is tonight a chance for Michael Dawson to show his quality and save his Spurs career?

What chance for Soldado, Lamela or whoever else to recover from disappointing seasons to prove their worth. Though usually disappointing, half paced affairs, opening pre season games are very much must see football, regardless of the result and performance for what happens off, as much as on the pitch.

It will be interesting to see what influence Poch has had on the team, in terms of shape and attitude, even if we have only minor clues of the team personnel. Some selections will as such pick themselves. Friedel in goal, Dawson and Kaboul in defence, with Rose/Fryers and Walker/Naughton at Full back. It will also be interesting to see if and where the likes of Archer, Fredericks and Veljkovic, Mason, Falque and a few others

With Paulinho, Dembele, Bentaleb and Sandro missing, is this a game for Capoue to impress or just keep the place warn for Morgan Schneiderlin? Alongside him, will we see Tom Carroll get some much needed game time? The reality is that we are severely lacking senior midfield numbers on this tour. Will this be the time we see Lewis Holtby move from No10 to No6?

Lennon, Townsend and hopefully Lamela will be available, Eriksen, Holtby and the wherever bound Sigurdsson, will make up the creative spaces behind, the only two experienced (ish) strikers of Soldado and Harry Kane. Will there be any surprise appearances? Has Poch identified a little known gem from the development squad and we get to be amazed at the quality of their play? I have no idea, but this is what excites us about pre season games or at least should do...

The World Cup was fun but it will be good to get back to club football again, even if as a friendly, the widening of mental horizons for players in all team involved in the Spurs tour, and as a means of Spurs players getting rid of 'rustiness' after the summer layoff. Clint Dempsey will ensure it is a competitive affair and it will be good to see him playing again after his fine performances for the USA.

For SEattle, Dempsey and Obefemi Martins are very good up front. Frei is excellent in net. BUT, the one to watch and appreciate is Yedlin. He will be playing in Europe in the next few years. He suits a Klinsmann system to a T and is really good on the fundamentals. Perhaps the best young American player out there atm.

Should be an interesting match. It is always tough to gauge anything from these because there will be wholesale changes for both sides at the half which always makes the game disjointed. Seattle is in late-season form whereas we are in pre-season. Be most interested to see how hungry players like Fredericks and Kane look. I am also expecting players like Soldado and Lamela to look very fit. They should have huge things to prove to the team, the fans and most importantly, themselves. COYS

A good run out to see how the players are reacting to Poch's ideas. Be good to see most of the youngsters getting game time during these 3 matches. Not expecting a lot as Seattle will be much fitter than we are. It's just great to have Spurs back playing again. COYS

As Peter said, can't really read too much into the match as a whole but if friendlies have taught us anything. The first half team will consist of the XI that have impressed the manager the most so far/those he thinks can start away to the spammers. Second half will be run outs for those close to the starting XI. FIrst half performance will be interesting. Personally I think that the side that starts against Defoes team will be the one that starts the season, not including new recruits.

At some point tonight would like to see Lamella, Ericksen, Dross, behind Soldaddo with capoue holding. Be good to see this lot given 45 big ones. Then see the likes of Falque, carrol, Fredricks, Holtby and Kane Muntiny. Want to see hoe we approach the game and if we are playing a pressing game with a high line. Score irreleavnt but would be good for Slo to net a couple of glorious goals.

I'd personally try Lamela as a second striker tonight. Give him a bit of freedom to move across the front line and get in space without having to think about tracking back. Afterall, he's more about trickery, slick through balls and a left footed drive rather than pace, power and athleticism. This is a good opportunity for some to save their careers or prove their worth so my starting XI would be: Friedel

Walker, Dawson, Kaboul, Rose

Townsend, Capoue, Holtby, Eriksen

Lamela

Soldado

Just some info on Seattle, from an american :-) ....... seattle is currently the best mls team out there. Have splashed cash on proven epl players such as Dempsey. Microsoft pays them a lot as their shirt sponsor (levy take note) so they have money. They play in an nfl stadium and will have about 64,000 fans attending the game. The weather in the nw USA is similar to the UK. Usually rainy, not much humidity, so the players should be ok. Also, they play on a grass/astro turf mix pitch. Should be interesting to see how the lads take to it.

It will be possible for players to blot their copy books in front of Pochettino, though I don't know how hard a taskmaster he is. He may just reiterate to any offending individual what it was he was asked to work on or to do and leave it at that. However, not so tense an affair that players like Lamela and Soldado can't express themselves for fear of some bloody goal they're supposed to score. Get those two playing again and stay off their backs, get in welcome loan returnees Holtby and Carroll, and let's have Capoue and Eriksen work something out. Plus youngsters, because all this is fun, it is serious, it is ambassadorial, it is getting the gears moving again.

I think the best we can get from this tour is seeing how senior players that do get time play, the likes of Dawson, Kaboul, Lennon, Townsend, Eriksen, Walker, Rose, Siggy, Soldado, Capoue for example. We can at least make an comparison from last season, to see if they do anything different.

I don't think we can do the same with Lamela because he didn't play enough, he is unknown quantity but we will see what he has in his locker. As for formations, players positions we may not get too many insights as we are too many short and I expect some youngsters will get playing time.

It's the senior players that I am interested in finding out 'how' they play, and also looking forward to seeing some youngsters to see if they could be good enough, like Carroll, Mason, Federicks and so forth.

What I don't like about our pre season is we always seem to be a little behind other top teams, Liverpool will have played two to our one. I wish we did the usa tour a little sooner or get a game in before the tour. I also question whether our pre season games are strong enough opposition at times.

BSF, the pre-season this summer may have been affected by the focus of so much of our part of the football world on the World Cup. Different in countries where this may be mid-season for them. Pre-seasons go amiss not so much for lateness as when they prove too taxing, cause serious injuries and so unsettle plans for the forthcoming Premier League season. Indifferent results don't matter unless they border on the humiliating. That can be a necessary wake-up call though. Or a good pre-season can mislead planners into thinking that everything will work out fine longer term. As for supposed lateness, there need to be enough later games after the North American tour to accommodate returnees from the World Cup.

Marketing question - when 70% or something like that of the population are overweight! why is the new Spurs shirts for adults fitted, slim fit to you or me. Do you think anyone from UA has ever visited a match or do they think football fans are as fit as the players, Ben Arfa excepted.

C.O.Y.S - So glad we are back. Really excited to see the lads and the new regime working together. Seems to me Poch is being given time at the club from ssn - saying his first task is to get the footballing philosophy right first. He also said we are different to southampton, we are a big club that needs to win. So he recognises the task ahead, I am liking what I hear from him, and what the lads are saying about him. Really hope this is the man finally to bring us some silverware and some great football.

tarkan, you would assume that the vast majority of the players will only play 45 mins, and its surely better to have a mixed squad, as opposed to a first team and reserve for this, when the main objective is to get fitness as opposed to team cohesion.
