Returning World Cup Stars

Returning World Cup Stars

Whilst watching the Seattle and Toronto games, the commentators frequently made reference about missing our '7 World Cups stars'. I was just wondering what we all felt of each of their individual World Cups and what now becomes of their Spurs futures. Once Pochettino gets to work with them, I'm guessing we'll find out more in due course. Here's one mans opinion on each player:

Lloris: Probably the easiest one to talk about. He showed in the WC what a class act he is and there's probably no argument from any Spurs fan. Lloris has signed the new contract and we're all left wondering does he get the armband.

Ekotto: the Spurs forgotten man played in the WC and then got in more controversy by head butting a team-mate. I believe it is a matter of time before we figure out which hooped team from Shepherds Bush he'll be lining up for next year. In my mind, he is the Spurs past not the Spurs future and we need to move him out.

Vertonghen: once again showed his versatility by occupying the left side of defence for Belgium. He actually played very well going forward but I'm not sure he was really up for defending and sort of left that to his team-mates. No doubt we're all a little worried about links to him leaving but I'm hopeful he'll be the next player to sign a new contract. After an indifferent season, most of us want to see him on left of central defence and back to the form of 2 seasons ago. Another option for the armband.

Bentaleb: for Algeria, we saw exactly what we expect from him. He was neat and tidy, very intricate at times and didn't look out of place at that level even at 19 years of age. I also thought it was a bit harsh that he an unused substitute when they finally went out to the eventual winners, Germany. Perhaps exposed in the wrong games last season, he definitely deserved to be in amongst the 1st team squad. He is also a free pick so Pochettino can keep him in the squad setup this season and leverage his talents.

Dembele: I'm a little gutted for Moussa. His World Cup was like his season. Half fit, patching himself up to play and therefore performing less than his ability. Eventually he just sat games out and we don't know now whether he is fit again now. We're still waiting for the silky player we bought from Fulham running at defences. I actually think this will be his make or break season for Spurs and I hope we see the best of him. He has the rare blend of silk and steal but we need more from him.

Paulinho: Unfortunately his Annus Horribilis continued in his home country. Glimpses of quality but never really asserted himself and ended up as a sub rather than a starter. Pochettino has a tough decision to make with him. He needs to decide whether he can unlock him and turn him into a free-scoring midfielder or cash in. I'd personally love him to stay and prove his doubters wrong.

Chadli: His World Cup seemed to be mostly from the bench. He didn't really make his mark but I'm not sure any of the Belgium`s really did. For Spurs, the jury is still out. He started off playing wide left and looked like he was making progress. By January it looked like Sherwood wanted him loaned out and by the end of the season he was in centre midfield. He's another one that Pochettino has to make a tough call on. He probably deserves another season but might be sacrificed if the right offer comes in. I would keep him.

So in summary, an indifferent World Cup for our players but it will be great to see them back training with the main squad. I think that at least 2 of them will be gone by the start of the new season. I'm just not sure which ones at this stage.

What do you think?

It will be good to see the whole squad together and see how pochettino deals with everyone. According to reports we have bid for various players which means that some players will leave, will be interesting to see how the WC players will fit in with the new regime.

Seriously though, it's hard to say who'll stay and who'll go. We (as a club) might want to get rid of x, y or z, but we need to find someone to take them and also pay them the wages they want. Also, we know every player has a price. If someone offers us silly money for a player, we (like all clubs) would sell.

Hugo - World class, top 5 keepers in the world IMO, nothing needs to be said. Ekotto - I really hope he goes. We've now got him, Davies, Rose and Fryers. I can see both Ekotto and Rose going now Davies is in. Vertonghen - We need to keep him, we need stability at the back and he is by far our best CB. Bentaleb - Didn't see loads of him at the world cup as I missed a bit of the tournament but based on last season he did alright, played well in some games but also looked out of his depth in others. To be quite honest with you I think he needs a quality Championship/Premier league loan. He's shown he can handle himself at this level and therefore needs regular game time, which with all the current midfielders I don't think he'll see enough of. Dembele - An exciting yet frustrating player, if he added a bit more end product in the last third to his game then he would be an absolute beast. His ability to drift past people is brilliant, but he holds the ball too long and I feel that needs to change (especially under Pochettino), I still think he can be a class player and a real driving force from deeper midfield. As you say he has had niggling injuries and we should take it easy with him, let him fully recover. Paulinho - Well the Brazilians say we "broke" him, and I agree. He came to us as one of THE top Brazilian players. and I feel he (like many players) was completely mismanaged last season. He looks tired now and a shadow of his former self. However he still scored goals last season and has repeatedly shown glimpses of true class. I think he needs a genuine rest because he's played a lot of football over the last few seasons. I don't think people should write him off however, and I think under Pochettino he can be that Lampard esque, goals, skill and steel in midfield player that we signed him as. Chadli - I agree not many of the Belgian players had that great a tournament, for example Hazard was really poor. I would like to see how Chadli would work under Pochettino, alongside Eriksen and Lamela in the 3 behind the striker. I think there's a lot of creativity and movement there, they could also all switch around a bit in between games. All in all though only a few players on that list had a decent world cup. Although I hope we stick with these players.

I think Bentaleb is an ideal player for Pochettino's style of play. He doesn't dwell on the ball and is very efficient at moving play on, progressively and at at pace. I don't think he should play every game but I want him to stay in and around the first team. I can't see any benefit in loaning him out...... Lloris is my choice for Captain.

Chaldhi and paulinho just don't cut the mustard for me, Dawson should be sent home and left in the reserves. If he is going to hold a gun to the clubs head and prevent a quality defender from coming in then let him know he won't be a part of the first team! Nice guy, awful awful defender! He has only ever looked half decent alongside King

I always feel that barring complete disaster on a Rasiak scale, signings should have at least 2 seasons to prove themselves - especially those signed from abroad. So Chadli 'n' Paulinho should have another go, with a new manager and system. I feel that Poch will employ the attacking midfielders better than AVB did, and allow more opportunity to get numbers into the box. This should help Chadli. With Paulinho, I feel that he is likely to be a goalscoring midfielder type. His record last season indicates this. Dembele has been here a bit longer, and for me is never going to be consistent enough for what we need him to be. I would move him on. Perhaps Poch can make him work, but I have my doubts. Lloris still may go, so it is good that we have Vorm as contingency.

Nice article Muttley, I'm actually struggling to disagree with a word of it to be honest. I'm firmly behind Hugo for the armband. I'm generally not a fan of 'keepers as skippers. But his attitude and application last year really stood out, along with his performances of course. Bentaleb could be a very handy squad player in what could be a very long, convoluted season to come. Paulinho, it has to be worth one more season with him if we can't bring in a like-for-like replacement. I feel he suffered more than most at the hands of the press during Brazils World Cup campaign. He was admittedly poor, but it is and was a poor Brazil side and Fernandinho's performance in the semi-final was far worse than any of Pauli's in the group stage. Moreover, I felt in the last 10-12 games of last season he was just beginning to find his feet a little in terms of contributing to our attacks rather than screening the back four which I don't believe is his best facet at all. Both Chadli and Dembele, in my opinion at least, would fit nicely into Pochettinos preferred attacking patter/formation/style, and so we need not look to replace them. To quote Drop the Dead Donkey, 'The mood is one of quiet optimism'!! Come on you beautiful Spurs!!!

Our players seemed to reflect the teams they played for. Algeria showed heart and skill in over achieving, the Belgians and Brazilians didn't live up to the hype. I worried about the lack of character of may of our players before the World Cup, nothing I saw eased my worries.

muttley, I agree when you say "I think that at least 2 of them will be gone by the start of the new season. I'm just not sure which ones at this stage." I don't believe Levy or Poch know either. It all depends on which of the World Cup players attracts the highest bids in the ENIC Auction House? In-spurs-ational sums the ENIC mentality it up when he writes "If someone offers us silly money for a player, we (like all clubs) would sell." This of course is not true. Liverpool refused the silly money for Suarez last summer. Decided it would be a better football and business investment to hold onto him for a year and sell on once Champions League status had been achieved. Very clever business, because Liverpool FC are now a Champions League club, will receive a huge amount of revenue from the CL this coming season, have made the squad stronger, and will still get top dollar for the biter! Which is why LFC finished 2nd last season and we finished 6th... Liverpool FC have an owner who although is only worth a third of Joe Lewis vat wealth, has the skill, the vision, the will and the desire to bring the Liverpool FC fans success on the pitch. This was confirmed by their head coach when he explained his decision to choose Liverpool over our beloved Spurs. Brendan Rodgers choose Liverpool over Spurs because he wanted to work with a chairman who had his heart set on on the pitch success, knew he would be given the time, and the support from the LFC board to do his job to the best of ability. Rodgers knew full well that Daniel Levy is a back stabbing bean counter... And has been proved 100% correct! Since Rodgers turned down Levy, two spurs coaches have been hired and fired!!!

I did ask this question a couple of weeks ago but instead of any kind of answer, I was reminded of Ade's life story, for some reason but, here goes: If Paulinho is in need of recuperation, how do we go about it? He needs to be match fit but, according to many, he has played too many games in the past couple of years and needs a rest. If he stays, how do we manage this? Do people really think it's tiredness or, is he just not suited to Spurs and/or the PL? (I have no idea myself). If he is broken, how do we fix him?

Rahn, can't really argue with your summary, although I personally would keep Bentilab in house. A loan now, when he's so close to the starting XI, may set his development back. He showed last season that he is capable of performing at this level, so why not keep him with the squad so he's up to speed with the managers philosophy should he be needed? I'd let BAE go, as someone has already said, he's the past. I'd also let Dembele go, for me, he has always flattered to deceive, plus he now seems to be an injury worry so he wouldn't be in my 25. Not convinced about Chadli either but along with Pauli I'd give the manager until the January window to see what he can do for them. Would like to think that the South American influence could bring the best out of Pauli, we all know there's a world class player in there. Off topic but Vlaar for Holtby would, imo, be absolute madness.

Not sure about having a keeper as captain, although I wouldn't begrudge Lloris as he was outstanding last season. Personally I think having a keeper as captain only really works when you have leaders/players who read the game in outfield positions. For me it would be an in form and motivated Vertonghen.

I think the focus of attention is on both Dembele and Paulinho. Both of whom have flattered to decieve last sason, Struggled to assert themselves within he first eleven and probably never really were deployed in a position or role that truely suited their skill sets.

However as I watched the swift intercahnge of ball and players from our front four against toronto it did occur to me that this is not something that either Dembele or Paulinho have played behind in some time. Wheither it was kick it to Bale and see what happens or kick it to Neymar and see what happens or kick it around betwen your static team mates and see what happens, there has always been an expectation on our secondry midfielder to some how sit back and let others perform while still being a creative force who covers the back four but should also be bombing in to the opposition box. This very muddled and confused approach to the role has severly hampered both players IMO.

With Pochettino seeming to be putting alot more focus on the front four creating chances themselves and terrorising the opposition we might actually have an apporach that suits both Paulinho and Dembele, they can sit slightly deeper as a secondry option to re-set an attack and also arrive later into the box to unleah the odd hammer blow. The high intensity pressurising of the ball from the front will also take some of the responsiblity for shoring up the defense off Paulinho or Dembele and hopefully allow a bit more freedom to creep into their games. Sort out the Dodgy CB behind them and play a proper left winger and we could yet find two very accomplished midfielders are already present in our squad.

I am sure he will be late back again and maybe just doesn't like / fit in with poch's set up! I think he will be gone. Bentaleb does need playing time so a PL loan may be best for him. What's clearly evident is MP new system allows for players like Paulinho,Chadli, Dembele to play a key role and one far more attacking than we have ever seen. The questions will be asked as to who will be starting? There is going to be some tough decisions ahead for MP. Paulinho will make his mark this season, I am confident of that. He has been written off way too early and shamefully so by Spurs support. I see Chadli and Lennon battling for position, Paulinho and Dembele, Beast and Capoue, Lamela and Bobby, Ade and Lamela. Exciting stuff to look forward to! Verts and Kaboul CB, Rose and Davies fighting for LB and Walker and Naughton for RB. We need to go as far as we can this season in all competitions and we must push hard to win EL. Once Dawson is sold along with Ekotto we would finally release the worst of the last remaining relics at Spurs. COYS

If Ade contracted some kind of virus in the second half of last season, then I hope to all Holy Hell that it's highly contagious in our dressing room.....the guy was eating lightning, crapping thunder, and was simply unplayable. And without him we would have been looking at 8th or worse. I've been massively criticalof him in the past, but if he can recapture/maintain that form and motivation then I'd hang onto him like Grim Death. Come on you beautiful Spurs!!!

Cheers for the article Muttley.

Lots to consider, but most of all, the idea that Poch is supposed to evolve and improve the team over 5 years as opposed to finished article in 5 weeks.

Some may not fit his ideas, he may know this of some already, some may be given another season to prove their worth, some might not actually want to play for Spurs, or the Prem in general.

Many of us are basing our fantasy ins and outs based on what we witnessed last season, whilst this is fine, some areas were glaringly weak last season, what we do need to remember is the management fiasco and all that created negativity wise last season. Add to this injuries preventing us numerous times of playing a settled, familiar first 11, and it's only rational to assume we are not really in a position to have learnt all that much from last season.

A good example being Chadli, this lad can score goals, make no mistake, but he's not going to do so from CM all too often, or hugging the Left Wing touchline, but what's to say he can't get back to banging the goals in playing as an inside Left behind the striker as part of the 3?, what about Soldado, many have commented on his neat touches and through balls around the edge of the box, but lack of goals. Would it be so wrong to actually shift his role to the hole behind the striker and continue with Eriksen Left, a position he did rather well at last season.

It may appear a strange idea, but as the AM/10 at least you know if he does get in to shooting positions, Soldado is a competent finisher, but one who is able to play deft little touches in and around the box. Here's the thing, it's pointless writing anyone off from last season as of yet, none of us really know what roles Poch has planned for certain players, who wishes to stay, who is surplus. One thing however I will stand by, we should not be looking to get rid of any of the 7 signings last season unless they do not fit into Poch's plans, a first season from abroad mixed with the shambolic state of affairs that followed does not really equate to a true reflection of what they could achieve performance wise, something I am hoping a good coach and settled squad will bring to the fore this season. COYS!.

Man on, trouble with adebayor is that you never know which one is going onto the pitch until it's too late and you can't waste a substitution just because you front man doesn't fancy it today. Plus if you take him off after 20 minutes, as should have happened at times last season, you've got yourself a negative adebayor to deal with and that carries all kinds of issues with it. More trouble than he's worth imo.

Cider are we not in danger of being over stocked now in the AM/CAM role? Chadli, Lamela, Eriksen, Holtby even Soldado (which I suggested during the match on wdenesday night shoudl have been tried) can all do a job there. the one weakness I saw was that both erisken and Lamela and lennnon preferred to come in from the right wing and not the left. Although Lamela appears left fotted he seems ot prefer the right side. Obviously I will wait to see what Chadli can produce ont he left of the three but I still feel another player is need there and another CB I would not be looking to replace any other player at this time.

Slurms...I agree with your post regarding cutting in. That said, Eriksen was not too shabby coming off the Left last season, would Chadli be better suited playing a tad more central as opposed to wide Left?. Lamela has to be central or Right for me, too Left footed to be the Left side option, think it would limit his shooting options. Chadli and Eriksen can shoot with either foot.

I will also declare, I too am guilty of "I want that player" syndrome, maybe premature when considering we've not really witnessed anything Poch is aiming for regarding 1st team and set up. Would I take Scneiderlin?...All day long, but only because he is an upgrade and knows Poch's ethos, do we need him?, that's the tough question, and again without harping on about it, it's hard to tell because last season was shambolic so very hard to gauge where we are. Yes we were carved open numerous times, was it all management mistakes, I'd suggest ethos did not help at times. Would I like Griezmann...Again all day long, but not because I am saying Chadli can't nor won't maybe score loads playing inside a touch, but more about the flexibility Griezmann would bring. He can play wide Left as a natural winger, but also very capable of coming inside and scoring well, add the pace and close ball control, and again somebody I would consider as an upgrade, but this does not equate to me thinking that Chadli could not add something. Has he been given a fair crack?.

Lilywhite I agree, your opinion is worthless. LB is one area we are certainly overloaded with "talent" BAE, Rose, Fryers and now Davies not to mention verts or Noughton playing out of position but who can do a job there! Ideally Davies first choice Rose second, Fryers loan and BAE sold!

There wasn't a better forward than Ade for us though, last season.. ;-)

Ekotto is History Ben Davies , Danny Rose in front of him. The Belgium players in the World Cup with the exception of Hazard seemed to go walk about. Dembele is always excused because he is not fully fit Hmm. Vertonghen is suspect for pace with balls played behind him. Chadli Paulinho and Bentaleb hopefully will benefit from Pochettino's coaching if the boo boys and knockers lay off.

Yes, element of sense in your thoughts. Hard to name the 25 man squad... Personnally, I would keep Rose, for this season.but that's b'cos'..I'd be trying a 3,5,2...system....with wingbacks. Thus, Davies,Rose,Townsend..competeing for the left wingback position. I see Mr Van Gaal..is trying unusual systems..3,4,3.

devils-advocaat - Yeah I just wonder how much game time Bentaleb will realistically see. Completely agree with you about Holtby for Vlaar. I see Holtby as a perfect deep lying playmaker in Pochettino's system. He works hard, has a brilliant eye for a pass and with Eriksen/Lamela/Lennon/Chadli/Townsend etc in front of him that bodes extremely well.

I do have the feeling that Davies is back-up for Rose and not necessarily first choice. He's young, inexperienced and has made a big step-up coming to Spurs. He did initially only get in to the Saints first team as cover for their regular left-back. (name?). He was however good enough to retain the position, when the other guy was fit.

Slurms, no worries mate......I figured you were razzing it without the need for clarification haha!! I honestly believe though, that of our fullbacks the first out of the door should be Rose. I just think his stock is as high as it's going to get at the moment, but sadly so is his talent/potential, and so it is the optimum time to rake in top dollar. I had actually forgotten about Fryers, so I'll take that oversight on the chin and ask, has anyone seen how he's done in pre-season? I shamefully admit my own exposure to our two games so far has been limited to clips of our goals. Come on you beautiful Spurs!!!

82 I think Poch will be using the old 4-2-3-1- formation!

Cider you're almost there what your missing is that Eriksen on the left certainly did a job but tened to drifted in field which left our LB exposed. I would welcome a player of the calibre of Griezmann to compete with Chadli for that left sided role schneiderlin in only if we loose Sandro or Capoue but having at least one player who knows exactly what the manager wants and to be his representative int eh dressing room is always a good thing for a new man coming in!

Lily, fryers has played as the left sided CB with Dawson as his partner and been poor, a couple of very good tackles but positionally weak as I say Dawson was there too so probably didn't help. He did get a run at left back for about twenty minutes in the second half against Seattle and did much better and he has a surprising turn of pace about him.
