Returning World Cup Stars

Whilst watching the Seattle and Toronto games, the commentators frequently made reference about missing our '7 World Cups stars'. I was just wondering what we all felt of each of their individual World Cups and what now becomes of their Spurs futures. Once Pochettino gets to work with them, I'm guessing we'll find out more in due course. Here's one mans opinion on each player:

Lloris: Probably the easiest one to talk about. He showed in the WC what a class act he is and there's probably no argument from any Spurs fan. Lloris has signed the new contract and we're all left wondering does he get the armband.

Ekotto: the Spurs forgotten man played in the WC and then got in more controversy by head butting a team-mate. I believe it is a matter of time before we figure out which hooped team from Shepherds Bush he'll be lining up for next year. In my mind, he is the Spurs past not the Spurs future and we need to move him out.

Vertonghen: once again showed his versatility by occupying the left side of defence for Belgium. He actually played very well going forward but I'm not sure he was really up for defending and sort of left that to his team-mates. No doubt we're all a little worried about links to him leaving but I'm hopeful he'll be the next player to sign a new contract. After an indifferent season, most of us want to see him on left of central defence and back to the form of 2 seasons ago. Another option for the armband.

Bentaleb: for Algeria, we saw exactly what we expect from him. He was neat and tidy, very intricate at times and didn't look out of place at that level even at 19 years of age. I also thought it was a bit harsh that he an unused substitute when they finally went out to the eventual winners, Germany. Perhaps exposed in the wrong games last season, he definitely deserved to be in amongst the 1st team squad. He is also a free pick so Pochettino can keep him in the squad setup this season and leverage his talents.

Dembele: I'm a little gutted for Moussa. His World Cup was like his season. Half fit, patching himself up to play and therefore performing less than his ability. Eventually he just sat games out and we don't know now whether he is fit again now. We're still waiting for the silky player we bought from Fulham running at defences. I actually think this will be his make or break season for Spurs and I hope we see the best of him. He has the rare blend of silk and steal but we need more from him.

Paulinho: Unfortunately his Annus Horribilis continued in his home country. Glimpses of quality but never really asserted himself and ended up as a sub rather than a starter. Pochettino has a tough decision to make with him. He needs to decide whether he can unlock him and turn him into a free-scoring midfielder or cash in. I'd personally love him to stay and prove his doubters wrong.

Chadli: His World Cup seemed to be mostly from the bench. He didn't really make his mark but I'm not sure any of the Belgium`s really did. For Spurs, the jury is still out. He started off playing wide left and looked like he was making progress. By January it looked like Sherwood wanted him loaned out and by the end of the season he was in centre midfield. He's another one that Pochettino has to make a tough call on. He probably deserves another season but might be sacrificed if the right offer comes in. I would keep him.

So in summary, an indifferent World Cup for our players but it will be great to see them back training with the main squad. I think that at least 2 of them will be gone by the start of the new season. I'm just not sure which ones at this stage.

What do you think?

Hugo is our one true world class player.

coopsieyid, I agree, Levy out - terrible the way he has let Aids spread.
In-spurs-ational
And Lewis and Enic out too (sorry forgot to mention them)
In-spurs-ational
It will be good to see the whole squad together and see how pochettino deals with everyone. According to reports we have bid for various players which means that some players will leave, will be interesting to see how the WC players will fit in with the new regime.
Kong
Seriously though, it's hard to say who'll stay and who'll go. We (as a club) might want to get rid of x, y or z, but we need to find someone to take them and also pay them the wages they want. Also, we know every player has a price. If someone offers us silly money for a player, we (like all clubs) would sell.
In-spurs-ational
When are they all due to rejoin the squad?
MAN ON!
Hugo - World class, top 5 keepers in the world IMO, nothing needs to be said. Ekotto - I really hope he goes. We've now got him, Davies, Rose and Fryers. I can see both Ekotto and Rose going now Davies is in. Vertonghen - We need to keep him, we need stability at the back and he is by far our best CB. Bentaleb - Didn't see loads of him at the world cup as I missed a bit of the tournament but based on last season he did alright, played well in some games but also looked out of his depth in others. To be quite honest with you I think he needs a quality Championship/Premier league loan. He's shown he can handle himself at this level and therefore needs regular game time, which with all the current midfielders I don't think he'll see enough of. Dembele - An exciting yet frustrating player, if he added a bit more end product in the last third to his game then he would be an absolute beast. His ability to drift past people is brilliant, but he holds the ball too long and I feel that needs to change (especially under Pochettino), I still think he can be a class player and a real driving force from deeper midfield. As you say he has had niggling injuries and we should take it easy with him, let him fully recover. Paulinho - Well the Brazilians say we "broke" him, and I agree. He came to us as one of THE top Brazilian players. and I feel he (like many players) was completely mismanaged last season. He looks tired now and a shadow of his former self. However he still scored goals last season and has repeatedly shown glimpses of true class. I think he needs a genuine rest because he's played a lot of football over the last few seasons. I don't think people should write him off however, and I think under Pochettino he can be that Lampard esque, goals, skill and steel in midfield player that we signed him as. Chadli - I agree not many of the Belgian players had that great a tournament, for example Hazard was really poor. I would like to see how Chadli would work under Pochettino, alongside Eriksen and Lamela in the 3 behind the striker. I think there's a lot of creativity and movement there, they could also all switch around a bit in between games. All in all though only a few players on that list had a decent world cup. Although I hope we stick with these players.
rahn DMC
I think Bentaleb is an ideal player for Pochettino's style of play. He doesn't dwell on the ball and is very efficient at moving play on, progressively and at at pace. I don't think he should play every game but I want him to stay in and around the first team. I can't see any benefit in loaning him out...... Lloris is my choice for Captain.
MAN ON!
Loser levy and Enic out! It is their fault that fifa milked so much money from the Brazil World Cup and millions were spent on it whilst the poor starved!
spurticus87
Chaldhi and paulinho just don't cut the mustard for me, Dawson should be sent home and left in the reserves. If he is going to hold a gun to the clubs head and prevent a quality defender from coming in then let him know he won't be a part of the first team! Nice guy, awful awful defender! He has only ever looked half decent alongside King
spurticus87
I always feel that barring complete disaster on a Rasiak scale, signings should have at least 2 seasons to prove themselves - especially those signed from abroad. So Chadli 'n' Paulinho should have another go, with a new manager and system. I feel that Poch will employ the attacking midfielders better than AVB did, and allow more opportunity to get numbers into the box. This should help Chadli. With Paulinho, I feel that he is likely to be a goalscoring midfielder type. His record last season indicates this. Dembele has been here a bit longer, and for me is never going to be consistent enough for what we need him to be. I would move him on. Perhaps Poch can make him work, but I have my doubts. Lloris still may go, so it is good that we have Vorm as contingency.

Nice article Muttley, I'm actually struggling to disagree with a word of it to be honest. I'm firmly behind Hugo for the armband. I'm generally not a fan of 'keepers as skippers. But his attitude and application last year really stood out, along with his performances of course. Bentaleb could be a very handy squad player in what could be a very long, convoluted season to come. Paulinho, it has to be worth one more season with him if we can't bring in a like-for-like replacement. I feel he suffered more than most at the hands of the press during Brazils World Cup campaign. He was admittedly poor, but it is and was a poor Brazil side and Fernandinho's performance in the semi-final was far worse than any of Pauli's in the group stage. Moreover, I felt in the last 10-12 games of last season he was just beginning to find his feet a little in terms of contributing to our attacks rather than screening the back four which I don't believe is his best facet at all. Both Chadli and Dembele, in my opinion at least, would fit nicely into Pochettinos preferred attacking patter/formation/style, and so we need not look to replace them. To quote Drop the Dead Donkey, 'The mood is one of quiet optimism'!! Come on you beautiful Spurs!!!
LilyWhiteHart
Our players seemed to reflect the teams they played for. Algeria showed heart and skill in over achieving, the Belgians and Brazilians didn't live up to the hype. I worried about the lack of character of may of our players before the World Cup, nothing I saw eased my worries.
jod
muttley, I agree when you say "I think that at least 2 of them will be gone by the start of the new season. I'm just not sure which ones at this stage." I don't believe Levy or Poch know either. It all depends on which of the World Cup players attracts the highest bids in the ENIC Auction House? In-spurs-ational sums the ENIC mentality it up when he writes "If someone offers us silly money for a player, we (like all clubs) would sell." This of course is not true. Liverpool refused the silly money for Suarez last summer. Decided it would be a better football and business investment to hold onto him for a year and sell on once Champions League status had been achieved. Very clever business, because Liverpool FC are now a Champions League club, will receive a huge amount of revenue from the CL this coming season, have made the squad stronger, and will still get top dollar for the biter! Which is why LFC finished 2nd last season and we finished 6th... Liverpool FC have an owner who although is only worth a third of Joe Lewis vat wealth, has the skill, the vision, the will and the desire to bring the Liverpool FC fans success on the pitch. This was confirmed by their head coach when he explained his decision to choose Liverpool over our beloved Spurs. Brendan Rodgers choose Liverpool over Spurs because he wanted to work with a chairman who had his heart set on on the pitch success, knew he would be given the time, and the support from the LFC board to do his job to the best of ability. Rodgers knew full well that Daniel Levy is a back stabbing bean counter... And has been proved 100% correct! Since Rodgers turned down Levy, two spurs coaches have been hired and fired!!!

I did ask this question a couple of weeks ago but instead of any kind of answer, I was reminded of Ade's life story, for some reason but, here goes: If Paulinho is in need of recuperation, how do we go about it? He needs to be match fit but, according to many, he has played too many games in the past couple of years and needs a rest. If he stays, how do we manage this? Do people really think it's tiredness or, is he just not suited to Spurs and/or the PL? (I have no idea myself). If he is broken, how do we fix him?
MAN ON!
Rahn, can't really argue with your summary, although I personally would keep Bentilab in house. A loan now, when he's so close to the starting XI, may set his development back. He showed last season that he is capable of performing at this level, so why not keep him with the squad so he's up to speed with the managers philosophy should he be needed? I'd let BAE go, as someone has already said, he's the past. I'd also let Dembele go, for me, he has always flattered to deceive, plus he now seems to be an injury worry so he wouldn't be in my 25. Not convinced about Chadli either but along with Pauli I'd give the manager until the January window to see what he can do for them. Would like to think that the South American influence could bring the best out of Pauli, we all know there's a world class player in there. Off topic but Vlaar for Holtby would, imo, be absolute madness.

Not sure about having a keeper as captain, although I wouldn't begrudge Lloris as he was outstanding last season. Personally I think having a keeper as captain only really works when you have leaders/players who read the game in outfield positions. For me it would be an in form and motivated Vertonghen.
devils-advocaat
MAN ON! Malaria plays for Mosquito FC... ;-)

I think the focus of attention is on both Dembele and Paulinho. Both of whom have flattered to decieve last sason, Struggled to assert themselves within he first eleven and probably never really were deployed in a position or role that truely suited their skill sets.

However as I watched the swift intercahnge of ball and players from our front four against toronto it did occur to me that this is not something that either Dembele or Paulinho have played behind in some time. Wheither it was kick it to Bale and see what happens or kick it to Neymar and see what happens or kick it around betwen your static team mates and see what happens, there has always been an expectation on our secondry midfielder to some how sit back and let others perform while still being a creative force who covers the back four but should also be bombing in to the opposition box. This very muddled and confused approach to the role has severly hampered both players IMO.

With Pochettino seeming to be putting alot more focus on the front four creating chances themselves and terrorising the opposition we might actually have an apporach that suits both Paulinho and Dembele, they can sit slightly deeper as a secondry option to re-set an attack and also arrive later into the box to unleah the odd hammer blow. The high intensity pressurising of the ball from the front will also take some of the responsiblity for shoring up the defense off Paulinho or Dembele and hopefully allow a bit more freedom to creep into their games. Sort out the Dodgy CB behind them and play a proper left winger and we could yet find two very accomplished midfielders are already present in our squad.

Good posts rahn and lillywhite! Good article Muttley!
slurms. I agree, surely Africa would be one of the worst places to recover from malaria! I don't believe a word of it! I am sure he will be late back again and maybe just doesn't like / fit in with poch's set up! I think he will be gone. Bentaleb does need playing time so a PL loan may be best for him. Or even better abroad. Dembele is the only one I have a question mark over, but let's wit til they have all worked with the coaches! No decisions on any til at least January.

Ade is not in Africa, he was diagnosed with Malaria in the UK and hasn't left the UK since unless I missed something and he is in Africa now.

Dublin it has to be true both Coopsi and In-Spurs said at teh start of the article that Ade was spreading around africa and it was Levy's fault
Slurms McKenzie
Slurms McKenzie. That's an astute observation and I believe you may be right. I think Dembele especially, could be revitalised in MP's way of playing. As I said, I'm uncertain about Paulinho but I feel he should be given more time, as I do with the others that came in last season.
MAN ON!

Like it or not (not, in my case), we're going to have to put up with the antics of Adebayor because a striker doesn't seem to be on the radar. The man is a law unto himself and should be replaced at the earliest possible opportunity.
devils-advocaat
Dublin Hotspur, not true! Ade has gone to Africa to be cured by the Malaria witch doctor... Hopefully he can get someone to cure THFC from the deadly ENIC virus, syndrome as well, whilst he's there... ;-)
Pele10
Is there a cure for Ade? Just let him play... I hope he stays, as I think he'll also fit in very well with Poch's game.
MAN ON!
What's clearly evident is MP new system allows for players like Paulinho,Chadli, Dembele to play a key role and one far more attacking than we have ever seen. The questions will be asked as to who will be starting? There is going to be some tough decisions ahead for MP. Paulinho will make his mark this season, I am confident of that. He has been written off way too early and shamefully so by Spurs support. I see Chadli and Lennon battling for position, Paulinho and Dembele, Beast and Capoue, Lamela and Bobby, Ade and Lamela. Exciting stuff to look forward to! Verts and Kaboul CB, Rose and Davies fighting for LB and Walker and Naughton for RB. We need to go as far as we can this season in all competitions and we must push hard to win EL. Once Dawson is sold along with Ekotto we would finally release the worst of the last remaining relics at Spurs. COYS

If Ade contracted some kind of virus in the second half of last season, then I hope to all Holy Hell that it's highly contagious in our dressing room.....the guy was eating lightning, crapping thunder, and was simply unplayable. And without him we would have been looking at 8th or worse. I've been massively criticalof him in the past, but if he can recapture/maintain that form and motivation then I'd hang onto him like Grim Death. Come on you beautiful Spurs!!!

Cheers for the article Muttley.

Lots to consider, but most of all, the idea that Poch is supposed to evolve and improve the team over 5 years as opposed to finished article in 5 weeks.

Some may not fit his ideas, he may know this of some already, some may be given another season to prove their worth, some might not actually want to play for Spurs, or the Prem in general.

Many of us are basing our fantasy ins and outs based on what we witnessed last season, whilst this is fine, some areas were glaringly weak last season, what we do need to remember is the management fiasco and all that created negativity wise last season. Add to this injuries preventing us numerous times of playing a settled, familiar first 11, and it's only rational to assume we are not really in a position to have learnt all that much from last season.

A good example being Chadli, this lad can score goals, make no mistake, but he's not going to do so from CM all too often, or hugging the Left Wing touchline, but what's to say he can't get back to banging the goals in playing as an inside Left behind the striker as part of the 3?, what about Soldado, many have commented on his neat touches and through balls around the edge of the box, but lack of goals. Would it be so wrong to actually shift his role to the hole behind the striker and continue with Eriksen Left, a position he did rather well at last season.

It may appear a strange idea, but as the AM/10 at least you know if he does get in to shooting positions, Soldado is a competent finisher, but one who is able to play deft little touches in and around the box. Here's the thing, it's pointless writing anyone off from last season as of yet, none of us really know what roles Poch has planned for certain players, who wishes to stay, who is surplus. One thing however I will stand by, we should not be looking to get rid of any of the 7 signings last season unless they do not fit into Poch's plans, a first season from abroad mixed with the shambolic state of affairs that followed does not really equate to a true reflection of what they could achieve performance wise, something I am hoping a good coach and settled squad will bring to the fore this season. COYS!.

Man on, trouble with adebayor is that you never know which one is going onto the pitch until it's too late and you can't waste a substitution just because you front man doesn't fancy it today. Plus if you take him off after 20 minutes, as should have happened at times last season, you've got yourself a negative adebayor to deal with and that carries all kinds of issues with it. More trouble than he's worth imo.
devils-advocaat
Cider are we not in danger of being over stocked now in the AM/CAM role? Chadli, Lamela, Eriksen, Holtby even Soldado (which I suggested during the match on wdenesday night shoudl have been tried) can all do a job there. the one weakness I saw was that both erisken and Lamela and lennnon preferred to come in from the right wing and not the left. Although Lamela appears left fotted he seems ot prefer the right side. Obviously I will wait to see what Chadli can produce ont he left of the three but I still feel another player is need there and another CB I would not be looking to replace any other player at this time.
Slurms McKenzie
Devils we should just get rid of the bad one and remove the confusion.

I'm feeling awful posiitive about Spurs this season. really enjoyed how the team seems to be shaping up and adpting to new ideas. Slurms McKenzie
I think we should sell Dawson and keep Kaboul.

I also think if they made Pochettino wear a Gillet, speak in a husky voice while leaning out of a range rover nearly every spurs fan would be happy with the manager!

I also think I need a coffee as I just re-read the first few posts and I realilse that I was in too much of a hurry to complain about Ade. They did not mention Ade's in africa I apologise for any confusion and abviously wish Emmanuel a speedy recovery.

MAN ON! I hope you're right but history tends to suggest otherwise. I'm not sure that he'll get the kid gloves treatment from Poch that he got from Sherwood either. Favouritism isn't the best way to create harmony anywhere, let alone the dressing room of a professional football club.

devils-advocaat. I agree... Who knows, he may respect the new coaches ways and work as hard as anyone else. He has to play with confidence as much as anyone but different players need to be handled in different ways and that's not about favouritism, just good man-management. MP has been criticised for having his favourites at the Saints but, is there a manager/coach that doesn't.
MAN ON!
82Spursdebut - I would actually prefer to keep BAE as Davies's back-up and for cup games as opposed to Rose. Rose would still bring in a decnt transfer fee, whereas we would essentially be giving BAE away. And in my (admittedly worthless) opinion, in all aspects other than age, Benny offers more. Come on you beautiful Spurs!!!
LilyWhiteHart
Man On having favourites as a coach is only a problem if there are better players then your favourites who are not getting a game!
Slurms McKenzie
Slurms...I agree with your post regarding cutting in. That said, Eriksen was not too shabby coming off the Left last season, would Chadli be better suited playing a tad more central as opposed to wide Left?. Lamela has to be central or Right for me, too Left footed to be the Left side option, think it would limit his shooting options. Chadli and Eriksen can shoot with either foot.

I will also declare, I too am guilty of "I want that player" syndrome, maybe premature when considering we've not really witnessed anything Poch is aiming for regarding 1st team and set up. Would I take Scneiderlin?...All day long, but only because he is an upgrade and knows Poch's ethos, do we need him?, that's the tough question, and again without harping on about it, it's hard to tell because last season was shambolic so very hard to gauge where we are. Yes we were carved open numerous times, was it all management mistakes, I'd suggest ethos did not help at times. Would I like Griezmann...Again all day long, but not because I am saying Chadli can't nor won't maybe score loads playing inside a touch, but more about the flexibility Griezmann would bring. He can play wide Left as a natural winger, but also very capable of coming inside and scoring well, add the pace and close ball control, and again somebody I would consider as an upgrade, but this does not equate to me thinking that Chadli could not add something. Has he been given a fair crack?.
Cider spurs
Lilywhite I agree, your opinion is worthless. LB is one area we are certainly overloaded with "talent" BAE, Rose, Fryers and now Davies not to mention verts or Noughton playing out of position but who can do a job there! Ideally Davies first choice Rose second, Fryers loan and BAE sold!
Slurms McKenzie
There wasn't a better forward than Ade for us though, last season.. ;-)
MAN ON!
Ekotto is History Ben Davies , Danny Rose in front of him. The Belgium players in the World Cup with the exception of Hazard seemed to go walk about. Dembele is always excused because he is not fully fit Hmm. Vertonghen is suspect for pace with balls played behind him. Chadli Paulinho and Bentaleb hopefully will benefit from Pochettino's coaching if the boo boys and knockers lay off.

Yes, element of sense in your thoughts. Hard to name the 25 man squad... Personnally, I would keep Rose, for this season.but that's b'cos'..I'd be trying a 3,5,2...system....with wingbacks. Thus, Davies,Rose,Townsend..competeing for the left wingback position. I see Mr Van Gaal..is trying unusual systems..3,4,3.

devils-advocaat - Yeah I just wonder how much game time Bentaleb will realistically see. Completely agree with you about Holtby for Vlaar. I see Holtby as a perfect deep lying playmaker in Pochettino's system. He works hard, has a brilliant eye for a pass and with Eriksen/Lamela/Lennon/Chadli/Townsend etc in front of him that bodes extremely well.
rahn DMC
I do have the feeling that Davies is back-up for Rose and not necessarily first choice. He's young, inexperienced and has made a big step-up coming to Spurs. He did initially only get in to the Saints first team as cover for their regular left-back. (name?). He was however good enough to retain the position, when the other guy was fit.
MAN ON!
Slurms, no worries mate......I figured you were razzing it without the need for clarification haha!! I honestly believe though, that of our fullbacks the first out of the door should be Rose. I just think his stock is as high as it's going to get at the moment, but sadly so is his talent/potential, and so it is the optimum time to rake in top dollar. I had actually forgotten about Fryers, so I'll take that oversight on the chin and ask, has anyone seen how he's done in pre-season? I shamefully admit my own exposure to our two games so far has been limited to clips of our goals. Come on you beautiful Spurs!!!
LilyWhiteHart
82 I think Poch will be using the old 4-2-3-1- formation!

Cider you're almost there what your missing is that Eriksen on the left certainly did a job but tened to drifted in field which left our LB exposed. I would welcome a player of the calibre of Griezmann to compete with Chadli for that left sided role schneiderlin in only if we loose Sandro or Capoue but having at least one player who knows exactly what the manager wants and to be his representative int eh dressing room is always a good thing for a new man coming in!

Lily, fryers has played as the left sided CB with Dawson as his partner and been poor, a couple of very good tackles but positionally weak as I say Dawson was there too so probably didn't help. He did get a run at left back for about twenty minutes in the second half against Seattle and did much better and he has a surprising turn of pace about him.

As for BAE, I don't know. I always liked him but has he still got it? He looked ok at the WC.
MAN ON!
IMO we should welcome back the returning players with open arms. Then let the induction into the MRP system begin. I do think MRP will have devised a different manner of players with these different players. I would hate to think MRP is thinking of only one formation to deploy. The seven plus 3 haven't been involved in the US game - so a different way to deploy or fit in with one way . IMO possibly see BAE to the door other than that fine. I am extremely positive about the season - hopefully Holtby will be at the club... really don't like the loan system. Still say Verts for the captaincy wouldn't be bothered if Lloris is instead. Lennon and Dawson are proving me wrong - in the opposite way.... making Dawson and Townsend the 'meh' response. I'm excited at the various permutations of our talented squad. Off topic, I bet BFS is on his way out at Whamboys after the latest news re Revell and Carroll ! Rather them than us - here's to unity at the club!

If I remember rightly, Poch did sometimes move to a more 442 formation mid way through some matches, depending on how the game was panning out and in response to the oppositions set-up.
MAN ON!
Cheers Slurms, to be honest that was the general impression I've had of Zeki whenever I've seen him play. Looks much more comfortable at LB than CB (although I seem to remember him playing a bit of a blinder in the 2nd leg against Benfica at CB Alongside Sandro I think?), and certainly not afraid of making runs and offering himself higher up the pitch. Very Rose-ish, but maybe more sound defensively? Again, just my own impression. Come on you beautiful Spurs!!!

Not sure why I just wrote that. A passing thought......

Cider Spurs - Good suggestion on Soldado at AM/10! I can see him playing similar to how Totti does at Roma, the false 9 position. Soldado is a very clever footballer with great awareness, and his passing/creativity is actually pretty good. The two goals Lamela scored against Toronto provided examples of Soldado's abilities. He didn't blast one high or wide, but instead passed to a player in a better position, which is good to see.
rahn DMC
Sl;urms...Good point regarding Eriksen drifting inside leavind LB exposed. I know the thinking is under Poch's regime we should be attacking and defending as a unit, but is Eriksen strong enough in the tackle to help out?. That's the beauty of Konoplyanka, he works the whole wing, often found helping the LB, but does not let that stop his attacking prowess, not sure if I see him as creative as Eriksen, he is more a LW in the true sense. Griezmann is the one who has it all, can we afford, are we indeed interested, is he and can he bring his form to the prem. ooOOHHH!...I do like a good gossip!. ;-)

Soldado....has his qualities ( a few !!! ).....Lennon was the real assister, in one of the goals, with his stepover. Praise to Lamela....for hitting the target.

Are there two Ade's? Hope the one that played last season plays just as well this season ... that's the one that never stopped running, scored goals, held the ball up well, and always seemed happy to play for Spurs!

What was evident against Toronto, was the joy of the team when Lamela scored. There seemed to be a good spirit among the players. A lot of smiling faces.

Cider/slurms. Re lamela. I saw a lot of him on the left, right and pulling the strings in the centre v Toronto. Wasn't his second goal from the left after a lovely through ball from bobbie? Try to remember these are pre season games and the first time these boys have played together like this, in a roaming 3. The signals are good. I don't think we will be seeing a set in stone left, right and no. 10 this season. Throw chadders in the mix too and I think it's pretty exciting up front.

Morning all - thanks for the comments. I'm sensing that the fans are starting to recover from last season's hangover and start to look forward to this season. Personally, I'll relax when I see a new centre half join. The rest will take care of itself. Right now we need Poch to have access to his full squad and hopefully this time we can keep them all fit.
muttley
muttley... Thanks for a good article.
MAN ON!
Dublin - what you describe is the difference between a 4-5-1 and the 4-2-3-1. In the 4-5-1 players stay loosely to their positions with width. In the 4-2-3-1 I think the 3 are supposed to be completely fluid and move about where they want. As long as they get back into shape when we don't have the ball it doesn't really matter which one is left, centre and right. In guys like Eriksen, Chadli, Holtby and Lamela they do that naturally. I'm less sure Lennon and Townsend can though. Ceballos and Falque also seem comfortable floating around as well.
muttley
Get rid of Dawson and get a proper cb in.A new left winger would be nice like Angel di Maria-world class. If Arse can sign a superstar in Sanchez, why can't we sign a boy called Maria.Real don't need him now they have signed Rodrigues.I think the rest of the team I'd leave well alone and see how they improve under Poch.Bring it on!

I also think it is important that all front 4 ..attacking players provide a good amount of actual attacking threat. I.e...shoot...on target....and assist. Emphasis...on...Good amount.....Consistency and frequency of threat. Example....In Toronto game....Lennon..great position..shoots wide !! Toronto game...9 shots 1st half...9 shots 2nd half....(approx') These figures...need to be increased...and with better Percentage of accuracy. If we want to compete..for the top level.(i.e...top4 ...in all comps'). This..is our Goal

For me the 4-2-3-1 style formations only work if the 3 behind the striker are free to roam. AVB had it far to rigid, and spread them too far away from each other, making them easily marked. In turn this isolates the striker. Hopefully Poch adds the flexibility. I then think that all our attacking midfielders can thrive - especially Lamela & Eriksen.
TonyRich
I think we've got a lot of goals in our squad. Remember the first half of last season, we had so many efforts on goal but not enough were converted. With a bit more confidence and understanding they may just start flying in, left, right and centre.
MAN ON!
I agree to a point with you Pele regarding the ambition of the owners but you are totally wrong regarding Liverpool and Suarez. Last year Arsenal offered £1 over the buy-out clause, not silly money and more importantly not the club that turns the players head. This year Barca came in with silly money and his bags were already packed.

Please try to be real with your comments. We as a club have a place in the food chain, we might be the 12th richest club in the world but the key thing you forget to mention, there are 5 richer clubs in our very own competition and all 6 are vying for 4 CL places. Could you do the math and come back with the answer when you have worked it out. Until then please only comment on the ENIC out article!!

MAN ON - Goals in the squad is a big thing. Last season we lost Bale's astonishing 21 goals from the season before. On top of that, we sold Defoe and lost his 11 goals. We also sold Dempsey's 7 goals. Also Caulker's 2 goals... That's 41 goals from 2012-13 season that we let walk out of the door. That was too much, and all our attempts to replace those goals failed. To make matters worse, Ade was not getting played by AVB. Guess what? We struggled to score. Eriksen & Lamela need to get scoring. Paulinho has shown an eye for goal too. Chadli had a good goal record in the past, and should be a goal threat. We need to get the most from Ade & Soldado too.
TonyRich
Cider ... re: Lamela being left footed. You are right he is more left footed than anyone I can remember. Both his goals on Weds were left foot across the keeper from the left hand side of the penalty area. So IMHO it isn't a problem for him playing left side. However, as demonstrated in that game, all 4 players were allowed to move across the pitch. There was no right/centre/left sided player. How they set up at kick-off mattered little, All appeared to have licence to roam. If you consider Eriksen had, for him, the worse game I can recall and Lennon was unused to this set-up, doesn't it bode well for the season once they are all intune with each other and the system. Also, not from you, re: Soldado, I twice saw him make runs in behind their back for with no pass coming. Once was Capoue, who didn't seem to notice his movement, and the other time the ball was passed to a nearer team mate. Given time I think our attacking part of the team will really good. It really is about shoring up our defence which, apart from Verts, is probably nothing to do with this article. So sorry for putting it on here. But I've written it now so I'll post it. Else I'll forget most of what I wanted to say ... lol.

Our returning WC 7 players will further add to our squad strength, or some will. BAE is probably past his sell by date at Spurs, Paulinho has been a massive disappointment and it is up to MP whether he stays or not. I think Dembele is massively over rated and has never looked at Spurs the player he was at Fulham, Verts and Lloris are class performers, Benteleb is WIP, amd Chadli has a lot to prove, so we shall see. I personally think that only Lloris and Verts are shoe ins to MP's team.

Critical I'd say we're more Sainsbury, M&S/Waitrose are CL's definites and Tesco/Sainsbury are the wannabees. :-)

Back on topic, I'm happy to get behind Poch, I think he'll get the best out of the players we have returning that have somewhat disappointed last season for one reason or another. BAE seems surplus to requirements, Lloris is top drawer and with the right mentality, on last seasons performance Lloris is the standout candidate to be captain based on his attitude during the games I watch, whether he was keeping a clean sheet or picking the ball out of the net for the 6th time he always seemed to be giving 100%. Can we say that about anyone else?

I believe all players are playing for the futures, if they are not up for the challenge then ship them out, irrespective of who they are. I'm not a lover of Dawson as a player but you can't knock his commitment, this is what I expect all the players to be like. Can you imagine if everyone plays to their potential.....Wow, i'm off to change my undercrackers!!!

longtime...Hello mate. Hope all is good. Yes, have to agree somewhat, almost seems weird me saying Lamela would be a little wasted playing on the Left when he has just scored a brace from the Left side. My point, the position for the shot and goal was all good, I just feel if he played too wide Left, because of his reliance on his Left foot, I see it hard for him to get in the right shooting positions.

I might be totally wrong, but I just think that when you are reliant on one foot, surely inverted winger role lends itself to better shooting options as a result of the goal appearing to offer more, curled efforts to the far corner, a Left winger won't be curling efforts to the far corner from the Left, he would be pretty much limited to shots across the keeper. Does this make any sense?. I do however believe the 3 behind the striker should all interchange and be fluid, as long as we don't have all 3 wishing to come off the right at the same time, all is good here my end. Looking forward to the new season. COYS!.

Cider ... yes, fine here thanks buddy, glad ur 2. I see where you're coming from with Lamela not playing left wing but I don't think wingers (as such) will be in the set-up. More a case of marauding full backs. As I put earlier it appeared more of a roaming front 4 when we had the ball in the oppo's half. Soldado seems to be the focal point when we have the ball in our half and as such makes runs in behind but once we get nearer to their penalty area they all move the defence around by swapping positions. Great to see. I wouldn't mind Konplyanka if he came though. Be another option to Lamela, Soldado, Chadli, Lennon, Eriksen, Ade, Kane. maybe Townsend could learn the system too. Our "CLEAR AND PRESENT DANGER" is CB or lack off.

Nice read. I think of the returning players I wouldn't be too bothered to see any of Dembele, Chadli or Paulinho leaving if it means we can bring in a quality player to improve the starting 11. Dembele really flatters to deceive, which may be due to consistent injury problems, but he has far from lived up to his potential. Chadli I just don't see what he offers at all or what his best position is. Our next priority should be a centre back, then a winger.

Mix26 obviously did not read the very interesting article fully, because muttley ends his article by saying "So in summary, an indifferent World Cup for our players but it will be great to see them back training with the main squad. Rightly or wrongly I keep reading that some do not care if either Paulinho, Sandro or Dembele leave. This in itself tells me that whilst we have a plethora of Midfielders do we actually have the senior players in this role as required.

We can all make plus and minus points regarding their inclusion or omission, are we really as strong as we need to be in CM?. Of course we need a quality CB, but I'd be busting a gut to get the Schneiderlin link turned into a reality. It would be another example of building from the back, he'd be a good upgrade to Midfield.

It really is a dilemna, is Chadli good enough for the 3 in behind?, I say yes, so do we need a LWF?, is Paulinho just tired, his usual form something of the nature we saw in his best game vs Stoke pre injury?. Like Dublin has alluded to, myself previously also. These guys that came last season were not just crap random picks, they performed well in their respective leagues prior, producing goals and assists a plenty when attack minded type, or looking classy in defence when defending or running tirelessly when box to box.

I call for Schneiderlin because his all round game is better than Sandro's, maybe not Capoue's because we have not seen enough, Morgan's signing will allow for trimming a bloated squad, with age on his side maybe a loan to a prem side for Bentaleb and a sale regarding Sandro?. Dembele I would lose over Paulinho, that basically comes down to time given to improve and show performance. Dembele could be a monster, but seems to lack belief in his own ability, he does the hard stuff easily, the easy stuff he fluffs. Again, could this on-going injury niggle hampered him, can Poch get him firing.

One thing that will need to be remembered, if we do indeed set up with 3 behind a lone striker, the 3 are going to have to be able to score goals. Pointless just having a fast runner, we need players who can finish, I know we have a few, we've just seen them played in the wrong positions or not at all.

Good thinking LTS.... I think we might be seeing the end of dedicated wingers ... Flexible roles of forward 4 plus the full backs as you explained ...

Quick couple of bits: We have definitely made an official offer for MS, Pool are still a way off Saints valuation for Lovren(Has gone quiet), J-Rod still very much on the gaffer's radar. Still no contact from the club to Villa for Vlaar, although as my mate told me this morning the agents have been told how much their players can leave for so, it doesn't mean we haven't been speaking to the agent.

Would just add the fee for Lovren is just north of £20mil which is why Pool have backed off, and why we probably have shown little interest lately.

Totally agree about Shneiderlain Cider, his passing is an excellent part of his game and importantly over long distances. I feel that was an area we struggled with last season as all of our current midfielders are short pass and move type players. Or dembele who is a dribbler more than a long range passer. Shneiderlain could spray the ball instantly upon winning it back allowing our front 3 and striker to receive the ball in less congested areas. yes we have good quality in CM in some ways but Shneiderlain is a no brainer, like a Huddlestone that can run and put himself about.

Cider spurs, I would actually suggest that we need all 5 players in front of the DMF scoring goals and we need contributions from every player on set pieces etc. Schneiderlin is a very good player. Of that there can be no doubt. The thing is, where do you envision him playing? Is it in the place of the DCM (where I see Sandro and Capoue), or is it in the Dembele/Paulinho box to box role? IMO, it is the latter which is why I have said, if we are to bring him in, the odd man out is Dembele. They are the same player, but, as you correctly (IMO) state, Schneiderlin gets the ball out quicker and has the ability to make the long Hudd/Perisic type passes whie also being very good defensvely. Paulinho, IMO, is much more of a direct threat and will score goals as he proved last season. Is he the perfect player? Is he great defensively? No, on both accounts. But he is a footballer, has very good touches, did score goals and has always scored goals, and offers way more of a threat off the bench or as an alternative to the Dembele role. Would I start him in games where the midfield battle will determine the result? Nope. Would I bring him on to get a goal when we are trailing? Yep. Would I have him play in Europa and the Cups and in games where the pace will burn teams? Yep. So, if we were to get Schneiderlin, it has to be in place of Dembele. Otherwise, don't get Schneiderlin and get Dembele distributing the ball quicker. That really is where our rushes stalled. It always puzzled me that he'd blow by two players, run all the way up to the box and be crowded out of the play and forced to play the ball back. The class of Modric was that he'd beat the first guy (whether in dispossession or by his deft first touch) and then would have the ball out of his feet the second that a second player was looking to engage him. He was always ruining the shape of the other team. Same thing Lennon used to do when he had Corluka behind him. He'd fly down the right, beat the full back, pull a CB out of the middle and then deliver the cross. It messed up the other team's shape. Lamela, while not as quick, offers the same. One touch and he's past you and someone then has to cover. In and of itself, it creates space. We did none of that last year because our distribution was far too slow and ponderous. If we are to be a possession based quick attack team, the ball needs to move instictively and early. It cannot be progressive and ponderous. COYS

yiddyboy, we are only 6th in food chain (as you call it) because ENIC have only added 200 hundred extra seats in 15 seasons. Have not created revenue streams from getting more bums on seats. Have only qualified for the CL once in 15 seasons. ENIC have not invested sufficiently to compete with our bitter rivals the Arsenal who around the time of ENIC's arrival had only entered their third CL campaign which has now become 17 on the spin.. The AFC owners invested in the team and the stadium, maintained CL status throughout and created their own revenue streams that have blown us away, both on and off the pitch! WHUFC are set to take us out as well... Atletico Madrid have proven that you don't have to be one of the richest clubs in the world to seriously compete. Little up and down the League teams like Portsmouth and Wigan have won FA Cups, whilst THFC under ENIC and Sugar have failed to reach a single FA Cup or European final since 1991. Even Fulham and Boro made it to the Europa League final. So you Math concept, especially as we have 4.5 billion quids worth of THFC board members don't add up. We have done no better on the silverware front under ENIC than Birmingham, Boro and Swansea etc and have been blown away by much less wealthy clubs than us in the Europa League as well. Oh and by the way yiddyboy I am free to comment on whatever article I so choose, as long as I am not being abusive to other Vitalspurs members or use foul language. Calling Levy a LOSER is not foul language is it? I mean, in sports there are winners and Losers, right? ;-)

Peter...Some good points well made. For me, I think a pairing of both Capoue and Schneiderlin in some games would be the absolute way forward. Schneiderlin able to get forward, Capoue able to concentrate on the DM duties, both able to play good quick long passes on the counter, but Schneiderlin also to add a little more in the defensive side as an addition when required.

here's the thing, Paulinho is most probably better at getting in the final 3rd and putting himself in the scoring position as opposed to Schneiderlin, but Schneiderlin beats him hands down on many other aspects of the game. As you rightly state, it's all about horses for courses, I myself see Schneiderlin as a replacement for Sandro, basically a fine tackler, but when required has the guile to get forward and link quick ball to the attackers. I just see Schneiderlin giving us alot more robustness in CM whilst still offering an attacking threat by way of his quick outballs to those ahead. If we are chasing, by all means a pairing of Paulinho and Schneiderlin could work well with the latter concentrating more and adopting the Capoue role, whilst Paulinho concentrates more on the attacking element.

This is the thing are we setting up with 1 DM and 1 box to box?, or 2 box to box types?. Either way, I feel Schneiderlin best lends himself to whatever we wish to play, so hoping we can get him in, currently 4/6 with Skybet. ;-)

Pele10 - Not one of us would swap with Pompey, Wigan, Fulham, Birmingha, or Boro. They would swap with us. You mention FA and Europe cup finals, but conveniently omit league cup finals. Why hide facts? It doesn't make your arguments sound better. You always have to consider what ENIC picked up, which was a mid table team with delusions of grandeur that flirted occasionally with relegation. We were even farther away from CL qualification back then. Farther away from being able to fill a larger stadium. The other thing about blind investment it has to pay off quickly. It is well known that EPL is the most competitive league around. Even if ENIC pumped external money in, there is no guarantee of EPL or trophies either. Money pumped in is usually there in return for more money to be sent back. I'd rather the money came from transfer investment (as ENIC have done) where the money does not need to be returned. Yes some sugar daddies pump money in, but it has to be successful. How many teams had this finance turned off? Anzhi and Malaga? What are you left with? The best way for Spurs to progress is to do what we are doing. The stadium will come, and will answer a couple or your points - more seats, more revenue streams, investment. There also is a global downturn for the last few years to contend with, yet we are still maintaining financial stability. I am not saying our owners are perfect, but it is a tough job, and we are just about hanging in there. I would rather stick with ENIC than risk getting in new guys who want to strip us or are plain rubbish and lose our momentum.
TonyRich
If and when Poch plays a 4231 formation, I'm certain that he expects the 2 to drop back, be defensive and to cover the CD when they are needed to support and cover the wing backs, when upfield. 1 or both of the 2 to link with the forward play when in possession centrally.

Not so sure about Konoplyanka. Is he better than Depaypromises to be or is he better than Griezmann. Myself, I'd be looking a lot closer to Dzagoev than the others mentioned. He can play right across the top as an AMF. He can score goals and is very good at providing assists from open play. Before I would do any of it though, I would rather we see what Pochettino can get out of Chadli, Townsend, Lennon and Lamela. We have Pritchard who aready looks verty good for Brentford and McEvoy who is off to the Posh. Both look like electric wingers. It seems bizarre to hire a "developer" coach and then proceed to bring in a bunch of players rather than develop what we have. If Griezmann or Schneiderlin cost 25M, is it really a wise deal? They are both probably worth 7-10M less. Heck, Lovren is now at about 20M. I'd rather have Tomkins. COYS

from what we have seen so far in pre season, the only thing that worries me is the 2 CB positions. Someone like Aguero would rip us a new one. Dawson and Fryers are no way up to scratch pre season or not and we only have Vertonghen and Chiriches as other options when there back. we need to lose Dawson and sign a quality comanding CB.

TonyRich, You can make excuses all day on here for Joe Lewis, multi billionaire, but it does not hide the fact that Lewis has the worst trophy per season percentage of any THFC owner since world war 2. Seville just won their 3rd Europa League title in the ENIC era and are not as wealthy as us. Seville are a genuine Europa League competitor to us, and have blown us away, just like the Arse back home... ENIC OUT!!!

peter...Lennon as received a fair bit of flack in the past, whether rightly or wrongly. My only concern with Lennon is his shooting ability, he may just be a bit better when played more central, but would it be wrong to state that numerous times we see a poor shot or scuffed shot from Lennon?.

Townsend we know was often accused of shooting wildly over the bar, but maybe that was more about his decision making at times when the build up could be continued with a simple pass. Both at present represent enigmas to me, that's not saying they can't or, won't produce, but I have to admit I hold more belief in Chadli and Lamela's finishing ability as opposed to the 2 aforementioned.

I'm pretty sure Levy's picked the team for well over the last decade and Harry/AVB/Jol etc were just there for show, so agreed it's entirely the chairmans fault that we aren't as great as the mighty Fulham, Portsmouth and Wigan.
Crissybwoy
Pele you are right, Spurs are in decline since 1991 as they have not reached a European nor FA Cup final. The likes of Fulham, Middlesborough, Wigan are far better off now they're in the Championship because they can clean their trophies or programmes from the European final, be careful what you wish for

I'm not saying ENIC are great, far from it in fact but since they took over the premier league has not been won by any team other than Arsenal, United, Chelsea or City. The FA cup has been won by Portsmouth and Wigan and the 4 previous mentioned clubs, the year Wigan won it Spurs lost 2-1 away to Leeds United, and in Portsmouth's glory year we lost to United at Old Trafford (3-1). So in all but 2 years of the ENIC reign the FA cup has been won by a club with more financial muscle than us, when 1 of those teams didn't win it we lost to one of them (Utd). So you right, we should have beat Leeds and won the FA cup that year, 100% Levy's fault....

Your agenda is clear and somewhat boring although you do have some good points, but remember 2 things.
a) the grass is not always greener
b) Your comments are valid and you have the right to air them only, although it would be very nice to hear your opinion on other issues, topics, players, managers, tactics, even what you ate for lunch on Wednesday's. We have Townsend who is a one trick pony (IMO) and we have Pele10 who is a one trick poster. Let's hope both change and become assets to the club and VS respectively.
yiddyboy
I'll answer my own question Re: Paulinho.... Stick him on the bench for a good few matches and only play him as a sub, when he's really needed. It's the only way to keep him involved and rested at the same time. If he really does need to rest then, this for him, shouldn't be a problem. A lot of our supporters will probably then say why is he on the bench whilst the inexperienced and inferior Nabil is playing? What can you do?
MAN ON!
Boy Pele, you just don't like to use facts at all. Atletico play in a 2 team league where 4 teams get in the CL. 8 of the past 10 years RM and Barca have finished 1,2. In the past 30 years Barcelona have been in the top 2 22 times and RM 21 times. Next closest team is Deportivo La Coruna with 5 top 2 placings. Yes, they pulled off a glorious season last year (title, CL Final, which has now caused RM and Barca to spend like thieves while Atletico are selling their top players. So they won't be winning this year and probably will fall back in to Europa.Portugal, France, same thing. Better off comparing the EPL to the Bundesliga or Serie A where the finances and the resources are more representatively distributed. At the end of the day, those with the largest resources tend to win the most

As for the always thrown out as fact comparison to Arsenal, there are similarities, but there are differences too. We do not have the corporate backing and interest that Arsenal do. We have far more "fans" which is why we have the long waiting list that we have. We will not sell the same level of corporate boxes and such that Arsenal have at the Emirates. That's where the money is generated. It is not from fannies in the seats. Double our gate returns and we are still nowhere near Arsenal's numbers. The reason is they have a huge corporate hospitality engine that Spurs demographics will not support (nor will West Ham's). They are not comparable. What Spurs need to catch and overtake Arsenal is success. We need to win titles and we need to convert that success in to international sales and marketing. All that must be done against the backdrop of the fact we currently have the 6th most resources in a league where 4 get CL, and where we find ourselves way behind Arsenal and Liverpool in turnover, and they, in turn, are miles behind the top three. Stadium is not the be all and end all. It is part of the equation. Winning, naming rights, exposure in North America and Asia are also big parts of that. Sure Pompey and Wigan won the FA Cup. At what cost. The answer is relegation. Where exactly are Fulham, Boro, Leeds and any other one year teams that gambled it all for what they got? We have qualified for Europe 8 of the past 9 seasons. How many other teams can make that claim?. We're in the mix. Far better than it was before. New stadium is coming, naming rights, merchandising and exposure continues to increase in Asia and North America. Even with the new stadium we'll still be behind Arsenal and Liverpool in terms of resources. Jus a fact. Buy the team. Do what you want. Just don't read VS because there just might be a lot of people suggesting Pele OUT. COYS

MAN ON!
The only time that I read Pele's posts is when somone picks a fight with him - sad but true. Evidently the "freedom of speech" debate is more interesting than most of the other close season drivel! No excuse for the vile language some self-appointed censors resort to though. Its only a few weeks now to kick off. How the hell can Poch integrate the WC players into his style of play in that time? I can see all but Lloris and Verts sitting out the first month or so.
Love totty
MAN ON!...Whilst I can't comment on Poch's thoughts regarding Paulinho. Wenger it appears has chosen to give his World cup winning Germans time off now with returns expected in October/early November.

Of course none of our players featured in the final, but purely based on the amount of football Paulinho has played either the past two years, I would expect much the similar to happen regarding his return.

I think will look at the fixtures both Europa and Prem, and decide either play him from the off, but lose him in October with a fresh and fit return for the Winter slog, or the aforementioned rest as of now and get him back fit and hungry ready to reintegrate with the 1st team come October/early November.

Every chance I am totally wrong mate, but I have seen you ask a few times, so only giving you a fellow posters thoughts on it.
Cider spurs
Love totty, agree that only Lloris and Verts will be first teamers early in season, but I expect to see Chadli used on left side by MP and scoring goals like the one he got at Newcastle, I can dream can't I..... COYSS!!!!!
Thats Entertainment
Love Totty, I think it will be difficult, but regardless of how many official games we have there will be other "behind closed doors" games. I don't suspect as it will take much for players like Vertonghen, Lloris and Dembele to fit right in, assuming other players are not brought in. The largest issue is fitness and I suspect that the WC players are all in shape. These are also players who can rely on levels of chemistry from the past two seasons, so there really is no need for panic in the streets of London. The more interesting questions surround who will start. Does Rose get the benefit of the doubt or is it Davies' position. Is Townsend even in consideration? WillWalker get his fitness up. Have to say both Walker and Townsend looked a step or two slower. They both rely on speed. Lennon, Lamela, Holtby, Eriksen and either Soldado or Adebayor have to be the considerations for the top 4 and since Eriksen deserves the benefit of the doubt, it's Eriksen, Lamela and Lennon behind either Adebayor or Soldado. I expect that the Schalke, West Ham, QPR and Europa will all be used to fine-tune who he wants as his "starting XI" for Liverpool and that there will befurther fine-tuning up to the Arsenal match, at which point I'd expect there to be a certain coherence in how we play and who is playing. The only wild-card is if we start bringing in more players and ship others out. Yes, people want Dawson gone and one or two more CB's in, but if Dawson doesn't go until the end of August and that is when others are coming in, it could be very disruptive again, especially if Kaboul picks up an injury. Who expected Sandro and Kaboul to not be available last season along with Adebayor? The early injury to Lennon also set us way back. Injuries, newcomers, changes to the dressing room, manager etc cause all sorts of issues. It is so important that we stay healthy so any newcomers can get the time to settle and so that Pochettino is selecting from 25 rather than 15. We need a great start to this season. Win our first six games and the pressure is off of Pochetino and hugely on others. COYS

Thank you Coopsieyid for staying and posting. The amount of abuse you have taken from certain posters leaves a lot to be desired. Well looks like Lovern is a done deal now at Liverpool and southampton are in for Vlaar.

As for our seven WC players. Firstly I don't think Paulinho is going to settle or embrace Poch style and I don't think he suits us, Pl or even the country - so I say he ought to go for his sake.

Chadli hasn't proved much but may be he needs another season unlike Dembele who I feel has had his chances. I think one of them ought to go because we are overloaded. My head says Dembele because he frustrates me and Chadli has only had one season, but I am thinking Dembele does have a lot of skill and may be Poch can unlock that to better use, so may be best if Chadli goes. On the other hand Dembele seems injury prone these days. It wouldn't bother me if any of those go, even both or if they stay.

Can't see any way back for BAE he is not going to get in above Davies, so unless Rose goes and Poch sees him as a back up for Davies I can see him going, but BAE as a back up for Davies if Rose goes isn't a bad back up for a season, guess a lot depends on Rose attitude.

Bentaleb I say stays, although he could do with game time, I think he will suit Poch style and he is young and a freeby I believe.

I must say I haven't missed any of them other than Lloris in the pre seasons neither have I missed Ade or Vlad, so that tells me something.

Personally, I think the red AIA is pretty ugly. Why they could not have used the same letters and colouring with the mountain motif as they have on their website, is beyond me. Far more attractive and the AIA is still prominent. That said, they are paying more than others were willing to pay and the colour throughout their product inforation and merchandise is all red. They also have a link from the home page to their partnership with Spurs where they outline what the partnership mean and where they big up the club. If they can help make the reputed 80M Asian Spurs supporters become 100M, red it is. Just go with the mountain one next season, please. I also suspect this will all tie in with naming rights which will go to AIG (my educated guess) which would mean that this whole thing works in America and in Asia which is what we are trying to do. Now, locate the next top level Asian player, and we really would be abl to crack on. COYS

I saw lamela score two goals from the left side...or was my THFC rose tinted glasses misted up...lol
Block D Spurs
BigSpursFan, every player you mentined there would have been a breath of fresh air in the second half against TFC where only Holtby looked like he belonged. Heck, the Canadian (one to watch BTW) Jordan Hamilton is the direction we should be looking. Strong, quick and knows where the goal is. That's been the case for the past few years in the Canadian National set-up at the U-Levels. Chadli will come good, but he needs to play. Bentaleb, even if Schneiderlin comes in and Sandro goes (wrong person out IMO) needs to be playing every week. There are lots of PL teams that would be able to offer Bentaleb a starting place. Southampton immediately comes to mind. If we get Schneiderlin, Bentaleb and Holtby could go the other way on loa which would allow them to help fill the holes left by Schneiderlin and Lallana. They both work hard and I think their fans would embrace them, though they would not be happy to be deveoping our players. At the same time, Southampton need to stay up. They played essentially 13 guys last season, have lost the manager and coaching staff, Lallana, Shaw, Lambert and look sure to lose Lovren, Scneiderlin and possibly Rodriguez. It will take all they have to stay up. If they do, it will be one of the greatest heists of all time. Keep the PL monies, get all of the monies on the sales and be able to re-invest in a bunch of young up and coming players. They could use this to re-stock an already efficient academy. Brilliant. COYS
peterballb
I watched the whole game and I thought that Lamela was playing a "free role", going wherever he needed to go to find space, and to make himself difficult to pick up or mark. Yes he got two splendid goals from the left side, but definitely wasn't playing as a LMFer. I thought he was excellent and showed for the first time, some of the quality that perhaps persuaded us to pay the huge fee for him, if that level of display becomes the norm, and wasn't a one off, he could turn into a very useful player for us in the PL.
Frank
Several news sources saying that Southampton have slapped a minimum fee of £27M on Schneiderlin in an effort to keep him. This is a hell of a fee for a DMFer, who after all will save you losing, rather than win you games. Koeman says "he is more important to us than Shaw was, so we want at least the fee we got for him". If this is true, unless we can barter them down considerably, to £15-20M, then we should forget it, as after all it is not an absolute priority to get a DMFer in, Capoue is showing on tour that he is more than capable. If we have that sort of money to spend get in a CB and maybe a striker.
Frank
It's good to see posters new opinion of Lamela.. lol
Block D Spurs
Frank...Have to admit. I'm not into Schneiderlin at circa £27 million. With Lovren now seemingly off to Liverpool, I believe he will be going somewhere, maybe Arsenal will stump up the cash. Got to say, Southampton are getting some wonderful prices for their players, but in a way, shame to see a team dismantled in such a way.
Cider spurs
you could argue Pochettino's managing of these player at Southampton has made them near £100m in what i can only describe as slightly above average players. I can see why Levy wanted him.lol

Coopsieyid....Why don`t you write on your articles & only comment on your own articles ?
You`re getting cringing & your gang only makes it worse by constantly licking your arse & fueling your ego.
This is vitalspurs not vital coopsieyid & ffs it`s getting embarrassing how you insult others yet moan about the site being full of insults.
I never go on your nonsense articles because all they are about is posters saying how great you are, that`s not an article, that`s opportunity for people to blow smoke up your arse.

pele is a poster like everyone else & the ganging up on him is disgraceful,he makes some good points but most not for me & i`d rather see how this season pans out first,he could be left with egg on his face if we do well.
An opinion is an opinion but it`s obvious an opinion is only valid if certain people agree with it.

If coopsieyid wrote an article saying how Spurs have been the worst club the EPL has ever sen there would be posters banging on about how great the article is & how great Coopsie is.Your $hit don`t stink dude? If Arsenal want to pay 27M for him, let them. I would sugges 15-17M is probably a fair amount. If he wants to move on they will have a problem on their hands. This will be a deal that will come to the fore late August. In the interim, I am confident that Sandro, Capoue, Holtby, Dembele, Paulinho and Bentaleb can manage things to the approval of the fans and Pochettino. He has three years left on his deal so the power switches from club to player in about a year, so, if he wants to go, h will get his wish soon enough. Will his value be as high without Shaw, Lambert, Lovren, Lallana and perhaps odriguez around him? COYS

Unfortunately with all freedoms there is abuse. There should never be an issue with anyone expressing their opinion. The problems come when it goes beyond opinion and becomes personal, abusive or racist in nature. Lines have been crossed by several posters. No apologies, contrition or mending of fences attempted. Just "I can say what I want because I have the right to free speech so FO you FN "$&@". All well and good but what happens when your right to say something offends a other's right to not be treated in such a fashion. If all posters respected each othet then no one would be getting banned. If posters who crossed the lines had the not so common any longer decency to make things right, no one would be banned. Clearly Freedoms are not absolute. You csn't even swear on this forum. It is automatically sanitized and for good reason. People lack decorum. Writers of articles and posters should all be respected. If a poster says please don't call me "pete" for example and another poster continues to do so, it shows a complete lack of respect. I am hardly perfect and have gotten carried away. I am also respectful enough to understand that and to apologize. It's not about taking sides. If I don't like a poster I don't engage them in discussions. Life's too short folks. Regardless of right or wrong, lots of decent posters are no longer posting or writing articles because people just can't be respectful and comport themselves accordingly. Not really a big ask, though in modern society we only care about ourselves and not others. Shame that. We all lose. COYS

With the exception of Lloris I can't get excited by any of the WC brigade. I think Paulinho is a class player but he is knackered mentally and physically and needs a lengthy rest, not high tempo training at the moment. I can't see Dembele attaining a fitness level to play in the new system, Bentaleb may adapt but he will have to speed-up his decision-making, Chadli could be good, or not and which Vertonghen is going to turn up...whichever one it is it will still lack pace and aerial dominance. I think the team that played the first half in Toronto will be the the nucleus of the starting eleven minus Brad, Mason and possibly Soldado replaced by Ade depending upon his fitness level. I feel that Poch demonstrated with that selection that he has a viable platform to start the season and the returning players, Lloris excepted will have to fight for a place.

Oh fork off longtime, coming on here speaking sense, offering a simple solution to everyones problem. Yes we could just flick past posts we don't want to read but what if they say something bad about me in it. I know I'm a hateful idiot who clogs up articles with pointless comments that add nothing to either the article or the current arguement and I don't care who thinks that about me as long as they don't post it cause then we'd have a problem.

Pele does his thing and only every defends his position, man on is crazy, Peterballb really only wants to talk football. Cider is help, funny annoying, idiot and insightful depending what way the wind is blowing, highgate has too much time on his hands, Fanny is blunt and forthright but hard to argue against his football observations, tarkan has a range from interesting to spitful but when on topic is generally interesting, coopsie has never claimed to be mr vital spurs has always stated that the rumour mill is nonsense but I like the distraction, does he have a hair trigger and an atomic knee jerk? Poor topho/onemore et al commited sins in the past and cannot get absolution again when on topic I have found him engaging when off topic or at least on certain issues distateful. Ox doesn't post enough comments and IMO is a victim of the success of Vital spurs, I'm a fan of Franks we went toe to toe a couple of seasons back and I had an enjoyable ding dong trading contadicting views with him, he was always the gentleman but well able to hold his own. It's really quite easy. There are No Rights...No Wrongs, just mere opinions. Where it all falls down is the idea that some posters cannot, or will not concede any ground in their point of view. Some become abusive when their opinion is questioned, why I know not, surely posting an opinion on a forum is open for debate?.

Some posters hit the submit button and think their viewpoint is a statement of fact as opposed to opinion. I place my opinions on here same as many, but first and foremost remembering they may be in agreement with another's post, they may not. I would like us to sign X,Y or Z another may choose A,B and C.

Many a time I have backtracked a little on initial opinion after reading a more detailed and informative post from a fellow member, is this a sign of weakness, me being wrong?, heck no, it's about taking others opinions on board and accepting that your own ideas will not always be met with agreement.

If I was to post I wanted player X,Y or Z and the response was written as "Feck off Cider you knob", not needed, a simple explanation as to why the X,Y or Z player was not needed does exactly the same thing, keeps it more friendly. But one thing would still remain, It is my opinion, and that would be another posters. No Wrongs, No Rights...Just Mere Opinions. Not hard is it?. Right...FECK OFF! ;-)

Geof...Must be somewhat of a treat for yourself to be able to get up from your bed and watch Spurs at a respectable time. I'm still undecided as to whether watching in the middle of the night, or wimping out and recording to watch from the comfort of my bed early doors tomorrow morning.

I'll most probably go with the latter, a match report on this one, if I watch in the night and then write one straight after, I'll be hangin' tomorrow morning. I could watch in the night, then sleep, awake and write the match report, but I know I would forget half the things I'm supposed to be writing about.

Yep!...I've decided, record, watch and write. Hopefully many will do the same, if match report is too late, many elements of the game have been discussed. Such a dilemna. Only been up an hour...given myself a headache!.

Cider ... Every game I watch is played at some ridiculous hour, my time. I usually record the games and could watch them at a better time, but my head always wakes me up if I know thereís a game on, so what can you do ...! I might try and train my head this season because Iím always knackered the next day. I hope you get lots of positives to highlight in your report. After the last gameís first half I am really looking forward to this one!

Geof...The current USA and Canada tour form looks like we're good for scoring 3 goals. Will we see a clean sheet also and end up with your old favourite... 3-0...?. Let's hope so!.

I was hoping nobody noticed how the goals against destroys my predictions!! But I'll stay with it because 3-0 is a nice score to win by ... it has nothing to do with logic or reality, just hope and glory! lol

Hi all, great article muttley Now I don't know about all of you but I really don't feel that our players who were selected to represent their nation were actually all that impressive, and with the exception of Hugo (who to me is one of the best goalies in the world) they all put in pretty poor performances last season for us. I felt that the best of our team was actually not even in the World Cup. To be honest I don't even see Poch actually using many of the players who actually went to the WC. In fact I can only see him using Hugo and Verts (if he decides to stay here that is) next season, as I feel that we have far better players in the squad (and if we get Schn then I can see Poch dropping both Paulinho and Dembele completely). But that's just me, I don't know what Poch will do. What do you think?

Mix26 I think after the WC players come back the whole dynamics of the squad is likely to change. I hope MRP has made use of KIT sessions with those players... I am just looking forward to a CB being signed. My expectations of Kanoul and Dawson have now completely reversed in both cases! No way we should sign Scheinderlin at the quoted price !!! Lol ing about the whamboyz result in NZ!

Highgatespur I agree, however how much have these boys missed? It's only fair the fit and ready players get a start except of course in Ade case who will be an automatic starter. Not sure we should be wasting that sort of money unless we sell Sandro. We have enough players in MF to compete.

Southampton are being clever they are putting their prices up because Utd paid so much for Shaw. they are having a laugh 27m for Scheidnerlin - personally no more than 15m and then its a gamble.

Its becoming a war now days with smaller clubs inflated prices to try and stay in business. No to Scheidner at that price rather we spent on CB and/or striker we can cope in midfield, we don't need to spend in that area just yet.

MAN ON - cannot see why Holtby will go out on loan, he has been the better player in pre season and he seems to suit Poch's ideas. I would loan out other players before him, he deserves his chance with his pre season performances. I think its nonsense.

Talking about nonsense would love coops to do another itk nonsense article. I miss them.

Not much to say at moment - can I stay awake until 1am not sure but I will have a good go.

topspur53
There appears to be a major asset stripping excercise going on at Southampton, to the extent that they must be a good bet to get relegated at the end of the season, having now lost, or are about to lose, 5 of last season's team. Having lost Shaw to Man Utd, and now Lallana, Lambert, and shortly Lovren to Liverpool, and now Chambers having a medical at Arsenal, the heart has been ripped out of the team. This must tell Schneiderlin that it is about time to leave a sinking ship. If we want him, now is the time to have a word with his representatives, let them know that we are interested, then leave it to him to engineer the circumstances, and make his feelings known, until we can get involved in a discussion to secure a move, but not at £27M, at a more realistic fee of around £15-18M. In other words we should tap him up, we have suffered this ourselves in the past with Berbatov, Carrick and Modric, and to a lesser extent Bale, perhaps it is our turn.
Frank

TE...Aaron Ramsey I believe. I believe the cryptic points to him. "Good old boys drinking Whiskey and Rye."...Could be alluding to Ryan.

Not the classy CB I would be hoping for, can't deny he's a tough bugger, sometimes that is needed, he will certainly get stuck in. Downside, it is said that he is very weak in the pass (Whoscored), I've not seen him enough times to agree or dispel this, but he has just come off the back of a season with Stoke that saw him player of the season, and again, he is renowned for being a no nonsense CB. Not too sure on his turn of foot either. Conclusion from me...fence sitting at present.

Talk back in April/May of maybe Newcastle and Man City showing an interest (Daily Mail?), stated that a circa £12 million bid might just be too hard to refuse. In the last couple of days Stoke have announced that neither Begkovic or Shawcross would have to be sold to fund new signings. That's my lot.

3-0 to Spurs. Enjoy the game lads. COYS!

Just be contemplating the signings that have happened with other clubs and what they have paid. I don't know them all but lets look at our immediate top 6 teams.

Now Utd have brought Shaw for 34m and apparently on 100,000 a week, Mourinho dropped interest because of his wage demands. So 19 year old makes high wage demands. Do I think Shaw is worth 34m NO imo I don't see him being anything special, yes potential but he has proved nothing at a higher level. My concern would be this - many players have one good season or play well in a lower expectation team but when they engineer a move to a more pressurised team they don'y always blossom. He may well be a good defender and have a bright future but at 34m I think Utd have been conned.

Then 29m on Herrera - can't say I know much about him. I am not sure how good he will be - unproven PL although he is seen as a good player. My verdict a lot of dosh, a gamble. A bit like our Soldado and looked what happened with him.

Liverpool - well they have splashed the Saurez dosh as we have. To date I believe four signings and one on the way. Lambert 4m, Llanana 25m, Can 10m, Markovic 20m and probably Loven 20+m now that is a lot of money and a lot of personnel. About 80m worth to date.

I think Lambert will be a bit part player and at 4m is useful. Llanana I think they have been conned. Yes he has some skill and works hard but again one good season, hardly young, average age and yet to do it at the highest level. I do not think he will become anything special at Liverpool, I wouldn't have paid that much for him. The guy Can looks tasty and I can see him settling well in the midfield of Liverpool and the PL, making them stronger in that to break down. Good purchase at a good price. Markovic - I really don't know enough to make judgement but again 20m is a lot of dosh.
BigSpursFan
part 2 lol Now look at Arsenal. Sanchez 35m wow that is huge money but a decent player. I do think he will be decent for them if he adjusts to the PL. Good signing imo but may be a little expensive. The WC got his value up. Debuchey at 10m is decent. He knows PL and is a decent enough player. Good buy imo.

Chelsea - Fabregas at 27m - I think is a lot of money. I just not sure he is worth that kind of money this time round and although a decent player I think Chelsea have overpaid. This signing will strengthen Chelsea a lot in terms of experience and quality but I am not too bothered about Spurs going up against him. Costa at 32m again a lot of money but obviously a decent player. If he embraces PL then no doubt he will be a huge threat, may be the missing link Chelsea were looking for. Now they have Drogba as well who will bring something on and off the pitch good move imo. Mourinho may have paid a lot for these two players but he got a good amount for Luiz - PSG paid over the top there and I bet Mourinho humped at that getting that amount. Luid their new LB undisclosed Brazilian I believe, well I don't know enough about him so no comment.
BigSpursFan
@Slurms, I'm honored to discover that you called me an old fart, and further made happy by your saying that you like the old fart. thanks, mate. I'm not sure what I did right, but I'll try to keep doing it. As to all the personal insults and the like that crop up on the threads here, keep in mind that this is an ongoing therapy session for Spurs supporters, so the personal is to be expected and should be accepted. Someone referred to flying over the coo-coo's nest, but I think it's more a group of neurotics than psychotics, although I may tilt things outside the box a bit. Cheers to one and all. I have a sore throat today and am stuffed up, but the sky is bright blue, the temperature is 29 degrees C, and the beach has enough young women wearing next to nothing but bits of string that an old fart can smile without difficulty. Maybe we should invite vital arse over to hold a potlatch later.
Falstaff the Fool
Part 3 - Tottenham - Davies and Vorm. Tow decent signings for now and the future. When you look at the prices of some of the players other clubs have paid especially Liverpool I think Davies was a decent price as well as Vorm. We may not have brought in a diamond player or enough players for some fans liking but our purchases have been decent so far.

I think last season we got it wrong, we were the club paying over the top, this season it is Liverpool imo and Utd. I think Liverpool are doing silly things as we did and Utd are desperate and taking a gamble on LVG.

I would like to see some of the dosh we spent last season either prove their worth or sold and try and get back as much as possible. I think the two that we overpaid for are the two that have been the worse. Paulinho and Soldado. Chadli at 7m is okish, Vlad at 8m okish, Capoue about 8.6m okish, Lamela 25.8m with add ons well we were robbed although he has time to produce and is young enough. My concerns are Paulinho and Soldado, not sure we would get back what we paid, may be Paulinho but not Soldado and if Lamela doesn't work out not him either but I think Lamela is an investment and pray he makes a mark in the PL with us and that investment proves its worth.
BigSpursFan
I am not really bothered what Liverpool or Man Utd or Chelsea or Arsenal have done in the window, except to say that that group plus City are now stronger than last year (except possibly Liverpool, having lost Suarez, and now involved in CL), and it will be even more difficult to nick a top 4 finish for us. As far as we are concerned, I applaud the signings of both Davies and Vorm, and this puts to bed two problem positions, I just hope against hope that we now concentrate on a quality CB to partner Vertonghen. With a potential 60ish games to play in the PL, EL, FAC, CC, we can't afford to gamble on Kaboul staying fit. With apparent interest being shown in Chiriches from Roma, and the demise of Dawson, who is just so obviously not good enough any more, we should sell both, buy a quality CB, then we would have Kaboul, Capoue and youngsters as cover. Schneiderlin would be a nice addition to the DMFer positions, but at the rumored fee of £27M he is a luxury we probably can't afford, although given we have sold both Defoe and Livermore and got Gomes off the wage bill, since last summer's window, and the fact that we did not spend either last season's, or as yet this coming season's "Sky money", and the Davies and Vorm deals, with Sigurdson going the other way, cost very little, so perhaps there is a few quid in the kitty.
Frank
BigSpursFan, I think your analysis of our signings from last summer is spot on. Yes we paid way too much for Paulinho, Lamela, and particularly Soldado, and we paid well enough for Chiriches, and Chadli, I think the fee for Capoue for about right, and that we nicked Eriksen, he was a bargain. On the basis of pre-season performance, I have hopes that Lamela will be OK, and will develop if he can stay fit, he looks a bit fragile. I honestly don't see Soldado becoming a prolific scorer in England, but I can't see Levy selling him, because he will never get anywhere near what we spent on him back, not at 29 years old, he was just a mistake. I think Chiriches might go, I am not sure he is a PL CB, and Chadli needs to get his finger out, and show why he is in the Belgium world cup team. So yes we made a few howlers last summer, several clubs saw us coming with our bulging cheque book, and some of them saw us off, and unfortunately we let them.
Frank
Surely we can't be after Reid and Morrison of the whamboyz ?!*?!
Highgatespur
Highgatespur, if we are in the case of Reid it would be scraping the bottom of the barrow, and with Morrison he is a pain in the ar$e that nobody needs, good player, but his head is all wrong.

longtimespur
Frank-agree. I wrote about signings as something to talk about, this thread has exhausted itself lol.

I forgot to mention Eriksen, yes bargain imo. I agree I don't see Soldado being prolific in the PL (whoever sanctioned that signing at that amount needs to be held accountable imo) like you said Levy will not sell him because he will not get his money worth. I actually think Soldado has ruined his career because if he doesn't deliver he will be a bench warmer, second rated striker to play cup games until he gets his last contract with a overseas club. He was a mistake.

I think Vlad has to go because he is a right sided CB and I just cannot see him working well with Vertonghen, it would leave us vulnerable in the air so he is not going to be first choice while Vertonghen is playing. If he was left sided he would have been fine as Vertonghen back up, similar player but not as good imo.

I personally wouldn't be upset if Paulinho, Soldado, Vlad, and even Chadli went, but I also feel Dembele has had enough chances and doesn't seem to unleash his potential.

We do need and must get a right sided CB if we don't I fear we will leak goals and for all the attacking play we will be punished.
BigSpursFan
longtimespur-good read. The comments underneath the article is also a good read which I agree with a lot of what was said. From pre season I would suggest our back line will be Walker, Kaboul, Vertonghen and Davies, quite a decent back line until Walker loses concentration or gets caught out if Lennon is helping him out. Or Kaboul breaks down with injury. I think the next game I would like to see Walker with the likes of Eriksen, Lennon, Lamela etc to see how he copes if Lennon continues playing his role like he did in the last game because Lennon over the last couple of seasons has helped Walker out loads and with this new way of playing Lennon will not be doing so much of that, so Walker needs to use his brain and pick his runs more carefully imo.

My concern at moment is if Vertonghen or Kaboul gets injured. Walker and Davies positions are covered with Rose and naughton assuming they stay, but Vlad, Dawson and Fryers and the young lad I am not sure are adequate backups although I have always liked Dawson, but he has got worse lately.
