'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Chicago Fire Vs. Tottenham Hotspur.

Spurs enter their final game of their three game tour, with so far more positives that negatives in my opinion.

Sure there has been plenty of rust and a juggling of personnel, and I`m sure there will be more of that tonight, but in a squad that is without ten senior players from last season, I feel we have plenty to feel good about or at least not to be to dismayed over.

Defensively we have been a bit of a mess, but Danny Rose has looked better so far, whilst we also have the new arrival of Ben Davies to add surety and competition. In the centre, Milos, Veljkovic, at 18, looks a very composed young player. is he someone that Mauricio Pochettino will look ti trust with some defensive duties this season. For me, he has looked better that Zeki Fryers in the role, however is that also due to the quality of their partners>\

Anyone watching Erik Lamela in Toronto, must have got excited. The idea of him and Christian Eriksen gelling is mouthwatering, whilst I also feel that Soldado looked clever in creation and movement, whilst Lewis Holtby has been busy and imaginative. Surely Andros Townsend will feel better for his goal and another 45 mins, whilst the same will apply to Etienne Capoue, who I felt covered his defensive duties excellently on Thursday morning.

Tonight, I feel we will have pretty much the same method of swapping the team around. That seems sensible, when we are still without so many players. lets look at fitness and getting the playing patterns more ingrained, as opposed to looking at a best XI. I feel that Poch has the idea of team over individuals, therefore fitness and understanding the system is what really counts even over another win tonight...

Hope the 2nd half team does better this time around! COYS!
Critical_Spur
Good to take a look at some players but with lots of players still not available. Dawson, Soldado and a couple others are literally playing for their Spurs career!
LuvWhites
Same team that played 1st half at Toronto, but swap Mason for Holtby, have been impressed with his play pre-season. Most of the younger players have played well, agree Ox Veljkovic has been solid in defence.
CanUkSpur
Come on you Spurs!!!!! Looking forward to Lamela again ... Wgwerever you go you always take Lamela with you .... Lalalala Lamela!!! COTMS!!!
Highgatespur
Another three goals....let's keep the tally going! Soldado + Lamela to shine......and Andros and Hotby in the A team! COYS!
Critical_Spur
Highgate, we need to change that tune to read....everywhere Ugo... :0)
Critical_Spur
Have been impressed with all the youngsters - reckon Dawson on last legs Hull probably beckoning - or is it QPR ? Thought the front line have done well so far (both first halves) the link up play has been fantastic... Soldado playing very well - another goal will help - but Townsend.... whooops... COTMS
Highgatespur
Critical - nice one - glad you understood my (lack of) typing skills !! Hopefully the 1st half v Toronto forward 6 will start again!
Highgatespur
Mix them up again but try to get abetter balance in the two sides put out than the toronto game. Three dmf playing in front of daws in his half game.lamela is only warming up thank god for that. Coys

What time is game??????

Highgate, I was trying to give our U21 coach a bit of exposure in the lyrics!

I'd like to see a more balanced Team A and B, else you are bordering on segregation!

3am kick-off here...

Sitting in the garden with the laptop.... i will either see the whole match or end up waking up being beaten by bugs...

I am not convinced that this wholesale change at half achieves much. Putting the likes of Andros, Hotby and Kane amongst the 2nd tier served little purpose IMO. May be they were to act as 'leaders'?..and I deliberately excluded Dawson from that list! Makes more sense to overlap some the backbone/quality players in to 2nd half. Did Kane look average because of average players around him, Hotby (a lot of energy), but little end result because quality missing alongside? Surely fitness levels must be rising and I expect some of the players to stay on for nearer 75 mins. COYS!
Critical_Spur
Yidmarks, that's a nice formation and I too would like to be entertained by that group. However, be interesting see what it may look like with WC returnees + Ade in the fold.
Critical_Spur
BT SPORT 2 free for sticking with the bad service.but worth it to see the spurs other than my internet for spurs tv living in the hills.coys.

To any one at spurs please sign bakkali.thankyou best regards.one team.

Yidmarks ... I posted on the last article about Capoue and Holtby as the 2.Not over sure I'd include Andros but it'd be good to see if he's learning from MP.

Our team tonight: Freidel, Walker, Dawson, Veljkovic, Rose, Holtby, Capoue, Mason, Townsend, Lamela, Kane.

Our team tonight: Freidel, Walker, Dawson, Veljkovic, Rose, Holtby, Capoue, Mason, Townsend, Lamela, Kane.
longtimespur
Our subs tonight: McGee, Fredericks, Naughton, Davies, Kaboul, Lennon, Eriksen, Ceballos, Falque, Soldado
longtimespur
Looking at the subs, Dawson might be playing 90 minutes
longtimespur
Critical the well done was for the Ugo mention! IMO the least publicised appointment perhaps 'unveiled' with MRP!!!! LOL ... Btw I did think it was an attempt to mix it up last time - hopefully more so tonight. Gonna stay up !!!
Highgatespur
Wonder if Mason or Holtby will be with Capoue or whether they'll be a 3 and go forward as and when. Floating 3 up front as well.
longtimespur
Sorry Highgate, you have a better command of the language than me and sometimes it goes over my head, Lol! Yep, I'm up for the game too!
Lts, I think we will see Kaboom + Naughton 2nd half. Unless Dawson has shown something in training that he deserves a stay of execution! COYS!
Critical_Spur
Interesting team - might be seeing how veljkovic reacts with Dawson / Kaboul ... Let's see if the improvement in Rose and Townsend continues / starts ... Will be definitively staying up ...
Highgatespur
Oh, sheet!, think I bolded the site!...best leg it!. Be back with a fix! COYS!
Critical_Spur
Critical .... what you done? Bold of you .lol. Yes I missed Kaboul among the subs.

I hope to stay awake for the game too. COYS

Hope my BT Sports won't play up.
longtimespur
Well done critical fixed !! That's probably the first time that commended me on my command of English !!! Thanks Critical ;-)

does that first half team verbally look like it includes most of those who've yet to get into the groove ? Especially at the back ? Probably thinking too much into them !! COTMS
Highgatespur
HGS I would say it's most of these need to get up to speed and keep Lamela running as he did last game. Confidence in scoring!
longtimespur
Lamela was well supported by Soldado and I think he should click with Kane also. My only worry is AT getting in the way of things and glory-hunting. Hotby and Capoue should be fine as some wanted to see that combo. Daws and Rose in defence?....let's hope Rose is on a progression curve, but not sure I can say the same for Daws....finger crossed may be! COYS!
Critical_Spur
Enjoy the game night owls!
MrFrancis
Mr Francis are there Sheff Weds fans on here?
longtimespur
Right I'm off to watch. Enjoy the game all. COYS

Trevor Francis, first UK one million pound player, I believe.
No I am Tottenham for my sins.
MrFrancis
Here we go ten minutes of live bloopers on 'Spurs TV'.
Keller has no affection for Spurs what so ever.
MrFrancis
Verts & Velkjovic will hopefully get a good run out together.. Im hoping there is some chemistry between them, as they could well be our starting CB's in the PL... I can see Poch wanting/needing to seriously look at who will play alongside Verts, and why not the youngster! Unless we bring in a new CB like Vlaar or Shawcross id be playing Velkjovic over Kaboom.

Id be interested to see A front 4 of Eriksen, Lamela, Ceballos & Soldado/ Ade (when he returns from recovering from HIV in Africa... as i believe the story to be so far)
Yidmarks
3am here... just about staying awake.. just sat and wrote the above... then realized Verts is no where to be seen.
Yidmarks
Yidmarks,
You beat me, it is 2am where I am (Barcelona),
Where are you based?
MrFrancis
OK... my point was... i think that Verts alongside Velkjovic would be perfect in the PL...

Youth alongside experiance and a player that can be moulded... as Poch was a CB he has the opportunity to make him a much better player and a player that plays Poch footy...
Yidmarks
And that Ade has Malaria Virus!... Like Slurms, you need coffee LTS!
Critical_Spur
oops!..I meant yidmarks!
Critical_Spur
Come on Spurs, missed the goal, whats the line up? LVG has a point about these monster pre-season tours. Especially in an international tournament year. The commentators on my thread seem a bit more clued in!
Slurms McKenzie
We look awful shakey at the back! Is Dawson playing in this half?
Slurms McKenzie
Ooh just a slightly better pass from townsend and Lamela was in, good to see townsend being aware of Lamela's run and trying to find him.
Slurms McKenzie
High pressure defense is the new Spurs way, working well Chicago have to shift the ball very quickly meaning passes are going astray. Great save Brad!
Slurms McKenzie
Nice unselfish play by Hoiltby for the goal ... Mason shpwing up well as is Veljkovic.
Highgatespur
Focus is the the feeling of clarity and alertness! When did focus become a feeling? Still I could do with some of that now!
Slurms McKenzie
Again great movement from the attackers an new Pochettino trait! Seems to be alot of space in front of our back four nott sure mason is strong enough to boss the midfield. Lamela looks a class apart!
Slurms McKenzie
Good call Yidmarks 0 was really impressed with Veljkovuc ever since he came on as a sub - a loy of composure ... The 'V" mean !!!
Highgatespur
Our main striker will struggle for goals their role seems to be as a foil for the three attacking midfielders! Not sure Ade will like this approach!
Slurms McKenzie
Rose and Veljkovic seem to be working well together, Walker and Dawson look alot less comfortable. Lamela making the late night worth while very lively and threatens everytime he has the ball
Slurms McKenzie
Great shots by Lamela but woeful crosses by Andros and Kyle.
Highgatespur
I think Mason is suppose to cover the left flank when Chicago have ball because there is no one dropping back from the front. Its not working huge amount of space infront of Rose and Veljkovic. Capoue and Holtby are working much better on the right side.
Slurms McKenzie
Townsend, Lamela, Holtby and kane just not as fluid as Lennon, Eriksen, Lamela and Soldado.
Slurms McKenzie
Holtby working hard around the pitch, Lamela looking impressive, Townsend the weak link. Not enough going forward and no tracking back on the left wing.
Slurms McKenzie
Ward's doing well as well...
Highgatespur
Capoue and Holtby closing down a lot of attacks between them and shielding Walker and Dawson. Mason, Veljkovic and Rose having to an awful lot of work on their side. Enjoyable first half better passing by either side in the final third and there could have been at least two more goals each!
Slurms McKenzie
I know it's preseason but that was poor from us.
Jables
What crosses Highgate? something we are very much lacking the odd attack to down to the byline and swing in a decent cross, everything is down the middle all the time!
Slurms McKenzie
Lamela class above the rest. If he can do the same in the PL and stay fit then I see big things coming from him. For me Townsend once again shows he is just not that good, his movement is one dimensional and I cannot see him being a starter by a long chalk. Holtby works hard and needs better players around him to shine, he is useful. Kane is a bit laboured imo and the attack is not slick like it was first half of last game, Lamela hasn't good enough players around him to hurt opposition. Defense hasn't really been tested and I think Capoue and Mason have been steady, Mason has done ok and Capoue is improving with fitness but the left side in front of Rose is exposed again. I would love to se Lamela with Eriksen and Lennon again but may not happen if Poch changes the whole team again.
BigSpursFan
@Slurms... your comment about Ade not liking this set up: he always says it's about the team, not him scoring goals. ;)
Jables
Fair comment re fluidity Slurms
Highgatespur
Jables that's a bit harsh we controlled the game without really pinning them back and we are a goal up. Certainly there are weaknesses and it will be interesting to see what the second half team look like and if Poch addresses these issues!
Slurms McKenzie
Hmm, some nice play, but have to give different combo's a chance. Hasn't quite worked, but threatening to. Nicked a goal, the type our defenders would can easily relate to! Walker and Townsend imo running in to dead ends. Kane, apart from the goal, not threatened. Hotby the new box to boxer. Let's hope for proper buzz in 2nd half. COYS!
Critical_Spur
Jables I thought Ade said it was all about the me in Team!
Slurms McKenzie
Not having a pop at ade more so speculating on how his style will fit in. I now he likes to go looking for the ball and drops back or out wide to give an option, but Poch's system sees to require the striker to remain in t he attacking role - which is novel!
Slurms McKenzie
I do think Ade when he is up for it will press harder than Kane and Soldado, but its when he is up for it.

Tonight Townsend weakest link again, he just hasn't got a clue how to move, create or press. ALL he wants to do is run with the ball, but he gets pushed into no mans land. He isn't intelligent or slick enough to make a difference, a lot to learn AT, Poch will demand more.
BigSpursFan
Sluirms there wre two attempts to cross not from the byeline but from around the 18 yard area ... both awful...
Highgatespur
arsenal miss out on more trophies!
Slurms McKenzie
Rose was giving Palmer some rough treatment and was rightly booked. Hope to Davies in the 2nd half. I thought Vorm may have joined up and make an appearance.
Critical_Spur
I also thought we looked more laboured, are they tired from the travelling and he heat
BigSpursFan
Now I have an awful hankering for a big make club burger, with apple wood smoked bacon. mmmmh! I look like Lamela I'm doing that much dribbling!
Slurms McKenzie
I don't know why Sandro didn't join them. I am sure he would have been alright after a few days off with a virus
BigSpursFan
Rose was a tad reckless towards the end of the half dived in feet first after cutting back over from behind Veljkovic and left the Chicago lad in a heap luckily he got the ball first! and then the booking
Slurms McKenzie
BSF, I think it is the 'transfer injury' with Sandro.....as per Bale last summer.
Critical_Spur
tottingham10 Mason was noted to be the better prospect than Nabil last season before nabil's breakthru. He has an awful year with injuries as well. I thought he would be one of those we's let go but impressed with his displays in these matches
Highgatespur
Soldado then spends the first 5 minutes of the second half proving me wrong about the strikers not dropping deep!
Slurms McKenzie
Ten minutes in and the space in front of our left back has disappeared!
Slurms McKenzie
We appear to be playing 4-2-4! Soldado with a great tackle on the edge of our own box!!!
Slurms McKenzie
There has been absolute nothing going on in the second half. We're not gonna win over any new fans playing like this.
Jables
First cross from the wings by Azza!
Highgatespur
I think Vrom came straight from the beach to sign and has gone back to his break... as for Sandro there could be another reason. THE US immigration don't allow anyone in if already carryiong a virus. I think I read that on the immigration card once... I coul;d be mistaken !
Highgatespur
awful game against woeful opponents. zzzzz
topspur53
Yea it getting tough now to stay with it, a lot of nice passing around the midfield but no real cutting edge.
Slurms McKenzie
ref seems to be loosing the plot a bit! penalises Fredricks for being pulled down by the Chicago defender and then books another Spur player for a small shirt tug!
Slurms McKenzie
keep it up lads...cant see the game....following ur commentaries....lol....coys
rovinella62spurs
Good goal by Azza - well played,,, where's the humble pie ?
Highgatespur
Worth staying up for great goal for Lennon! but what abut the passing between him and Eriksen before he was realised with a ball over the top!
Slurms McKenzie
Sorry Rovinella62, it must seem like the most bizzare game ever for you!!! I'll be honest I didn't think Lennon would be one of the players who would flourish under Pochettino but in the last three games he's been like a new signing!!
Slurms McKenzie
rovinella62spurs, no internet?
MrFrancis
Eriksen through on the keeper one on one after a mistake in the Chicago backline but plays it into the keepers mid-rift, he needs to be putting those chances away!
Slurms McKenzie
3 minutes of injury time for Spurs to get a third goal and maintain our goal scoring average!
Slurms McKenzie
I'm liking the solidity of the play tonight... Do I hear 'Yid Army' being chanted ?!! COTMS!
Highgatespur
Dawson makes a good block from Fondi Cox to stop a certain goal right after Falque should have made it three for Spurs
Slurms McKenzie
we need a striker like Bony please. i just dont see Soldado cutting it in the PL. boring game time for bed
topspur53
slurms..actually im enjoying the commentary...lol.....mr francis.....yes ,net but pre.paid and wont see out the game....got cable but the stations not on there.........im way in jamaica......coys
rovinella62spurs
Thought Eriksen too casual, bit laid back, but not worried he will pick up. I thought all players looked tired. Lennon played well, moved about a lot, he is still a mile better than Townsend, his movement, passing and dare I say it creativity is better than Townsend and he scored as well. I see improvement in Lennon already and see him being a starter.

Federicks looks up for it when he comes on, he may well have a bright future.

Soldado, again doesn't inspire me although he got about a bit more tonight. He sometimes makes a pass and stands still, he is the player I struggle watching, I did last season and I am starting to again pre season.

I think these friendlies have shown who is going to compete for a first team start and who needs to be on loan, but we still have several players to see under Poch so who knows.

Was it worth staying up to watch probably not, but hey we love Spurs
BigSpursFan
Not sure what I learnt from this game. Winning mentality, Lennon's goal, more fitness for some, whether some will be around at the start of the season or not. Time for some serious business back at base with the full squad in training. COYS and nite/morning all!.
Critical_Spur
Right bed time. Its over Rovinella! Second half very solid little or no penetration kind like early last season. Noughton looks much better then walker at right back. Davies again not really aske dto do much got forward a couple of times and had one shot that could hav ebeen rifled in. No goal from Soldado but great work rate. lack of crosses a worry Two in the fist half one from lennon in the second.

Overall a solid win, never really under pressure and a clean sheet. Very little excitement in the game apart from Lennon's goal!
Slurms McKenzie
Okeased with the tour - lots of positives .... great support from the SpursUS... a few folks to wave goodbye to for the season and beyond. Good night folks
Highgatespur
Critical-possibly re Sandro.

Slurms-agree re Lennon, like he has had the freedom to express himself.

Sheit I don't know what I did and certainly don't know how to fix it, I just added a line break good damn slow witted text box or ultra fast keyboard something missed a close bracket along the way. Chaps who stood out. Only watched the 2nd half and Lennon looked the most dangerous until Fredericks came on. Wow 3.50am. Time for bed. COYS!
a.k.a.james1spurs
Chicago was horrible, although not as horrible as the American announcers. Shills for MLS and have nothing intelligent to say about the match.

Spurs weren't much to enjoy either, but they showed some patience setting up triangles and passing the ball about. Townsend, as other noted, was horrible. Bits and pieces of good play by our lads, but nothing sustained. But the team hasn't settled in under the Argie manager and a lot of our lads haven't laced up a boot yet, so what can we expect. Lamela looks alive, which is better than last season. Lennon too. Daws less horrible than in Toronto. But a lot of work to get ready for the season. Now where close to being a good team on the pitch at the moment. Flashes of decency only, so far.

Falstaff the Fool
I thought we looked a bit tired and jaded for much of the game. We were a fair way from the intensity and slick passing of the first half against Toronto a few days ago. The opposition offered little to worry about. Maybe it's been a tiring tour but I did not get the impression that our boys were playing to impress the manager and the future of their Spurs career. I was surprised at the lack of pace to move forward at times and we seemed quite content to stroke it around sideways and backwards, waiting for a break or something to happen. But, having said that, it was what it was ... a pre-season workout. Players have had another run out and added to their fitness, and MP has had another opportunity to look them over. When you think of the players still to become involved, MP has got a mammoth task to pull out the best eleven, or close to it. I have absolutely no idea who we should play against WHU, or even what system we should play. But thatís what pre-season is all about and thereís still some games and a lot of training sessions to go. So, good luck MP! COYS.
Geofspurs
Michael Dawson team captain again? I thought preseason was all about creating a system, building a bond between players, and a team captain is the central focus of this, the main man to organize the troops. The man who puts into action the coaches instructions whilst on the pitch. The man other players in the squad look to for guidance. A team captain is the central motivator, the leader, the driving force! Daniel Loser Levy has awarded his favorite central defender (324 appearances thus far) 3 separate contracts that span 9 season, just like as he gave his number 1 played creative midfielder JJ (statistical fact) of the ENIC era, three contracts to keep far superior out of the team. It took Modric over 2 seasons to claim the CM role from JJ! No wonder LOSER Levy has the personal honor of having the worst trophy per season percentage of any THFC chairman in 7 decades....... Statistical fact! ENIC OUT!!!
Pele10
I wonder who's idea having the yellow Mr Byrite streak's all over the Navy Blue Kit were? The tasteless, yellow streaks up the back of the socks are vintage Daniel Levy design!!! From Petticoat Lane to White Hart Lane... We really have a rag trade boy running us!!!
Pele10
Now go to the appalling tacks website of 4.5 billion quids worth of THFC board members. Only goes to prove, money can't by style... http://www.tottenhamhotspur.com/
Pele10
tacks? Meant to write tacky...
Pele10
I like the look of the navy kit! Don't think who the captain is matters on a tour where 22 or23 lads play every game.
Slurms McKenzie
Out of sight out of mind, Hugo. Rose now get's my vote for Captain. Someone for Ben to look up to..... The goalkeepers get to wear the dodgiest kits. What ever happened to them wearing a simple green shirt and the team shorts and socks? As for the day glow boots, I wouldn't be seen dead! Lennon is my vice captain. Hey, everyone needs a vice! Up the WHL!
MAN ON!
Didn't get to see the match so thanks for the running updates, Slurms. ITV could have done with you on their commentary team.
MAN ON!
...At the WC, i mean....
MAN ON!
Just watched the game. A lot of huff and puff but nothing to get excited about. What concerned me a little was that our few chances were normally from their mistakes. The 2 goals definitely were but credit to Holtby and Lennon for them.
muttley
I do hope we're putting some serious effort into adding more goals to the team and not focusing everything on Schneiderlin....I have to say my expectations for this year are quite low...some will think that is a good thing but if it's a view shared by many it means the excitement is diminished or as Peter puts it we're no longer 'part of the conversation' that means less chance of picking up fans across the globe...and overseas marketing is worth much much more than even a 100k seat stadium....well it is to THFC perhaps not to ENIC...and there's the rub....time for them to put THFC first for a change....
shedboy2
bazdog, in 3 halves of football Soldado has set up 3 goals and won and converted a penalty. Seeing him score in open play might be good but I'd be more than happy to see that kind of return in competitive games. To put it another way, of the 8 goals we've scored in pre-season so far he's had a hand in half of them and only played for half the time! The way we seem to be setting up at the moment the 3 behind the striker look likely to be far more involved in scoring. As critical as most of us were over Soldado's scoring rate last season I'd happily argue that he was our 2nd most creative player behind Eriksen. If he can get back to his goal scoring ways then fantastic, but if he can just add a few more to what he got last year and remain as creative for the 3 behind him he could still be a very potent choice up front.
flipper
jeeze pele- did DL run the kit up himself in a Stamford hill sweat shop? No. take a chill pill mate
topspur53
if all the team follow Holtby's work rate we will have a vast improvement on last season. mind you, that's not saying a lot. lol
topspur53
Another assist for Holtby, tap in for Kane (who I thought was offside) and a great through ball from Soldado for Lennon's well earned goal.
longtimespur
Must say that I don't much like the yellow in the kits. Nor the red in the white kits. Oh well. I'm not sure I'd blame that on DL personally, though. But who wants to have THFC associated with having a yellow streak? Ouch! That wasn't thought through.
Falstaff the Fool
I think yesterdays formation and set-up was designed to see how well we could contain the opposition. It was noticicable that we weren't as attacking as against toronto but we retained the ball much better and had some great passing especially in the second half. If this is the case then the boys are obviously listening to Poch and implementing his ideas, even when experimenting.
Slurms McKenzie
flipper I agree re: Soldado but I think we appear to play more of a front 4 the way they all interchange.
longtimespur
Missed the game last night does anyone know of a site that is showing a replay?
Rapm
topspur53 to my thinking a fast improvement on last year would mean CL. We finished 6th last year. Little improvement = 5th. Vast improvement =2/3/4th...lol
longtimespur
Falstaff the Fool- agree on the yellow streak..it has such negative connotations....and it doesn't look good to me..
shedboy2
Rapm, you do not want to waster your time watching this game! All you missed was two shots from Lamela. The second half made me wish I hadnt woken up at 3 am to watch this game.
Jables
Fair enough. I'm glad I got my beauty sleep.
Rapm
Stand out players Lamela, Holtby and Veljkovuc. With half the side still to join up with the squad, it's not a bad start to Pochettino's rein, at this rate he might last to Easter rather than Xmas. COYS
Chelmspur
Hmmm...Plus's.....Mason, 2 footed composed, eye for a forward pass. Now a forward thinking CDM...rather than CAM without pace. A week at Home..on the training ground...with the World cup chaps. Just wish we had 3 top competitive games before the 1st prem' game, rather than 2. Lots of decisions...to be made in the next few weeks. Hope a real striker goalscorer is on our ....to buy list.
82spursdebut
Morning all. Had my lie in after the vigil and thought I'd just add the following observation: (and for those who may be watching the replay may confirm this):

The crisp passing remained in evidence. However...
I felt it was one pass forward and two back. But here's the important part, the two back passes took us about 10/15 yards back, the forward pass was designed (and often worked) to move us 20/25 yards. It was the back passes that frustrated me as a s1deways pass may have been more effective, but for the ball holder failed to see the available option. OK, I was happy with the 20/30 yards penetrating forward pass, but on few occasions such pass was easily intercepted by the oppo and we were fortunate not to be punished.

Dawson tried his 50 yards diagonal hoofs with the predictable result. Lennon a good run and finish. Think he is being asked to focus on his (new) role rather than a jack of all trades. Lamela MotM for me,....miles ahead of others. Still work in progress, hopefully I won't be saying that in about 3-weeks time! COYS!

Brad after the match:

"The (tour) was a success and on the training pitch it was a big success," Friedel said.

"We trained twice a day most days; he's a very demanding manager but also very enjoyable (to work with).

"The style of play changes whenever a manager changes. I think you'll see a lot of pressing, a lot of attacking football, I think you'll see us try to play from ther back. You've seen a glimpse here of what we'll try to do."

My take on last night's game. Firstly I would really like to commend Capoue again. Worked his socks off closing down the spaces, their players and getting in some good tackles breaking up their play. He also spread some good passes forward quickly once he had won the ball. Lamela another good performance with a couple of rasping shots. Friedel not much to do but did it well. Milos again competent and calm. Holtby was tireless and good work to win the ball and set up Kane for the first goal. competent. Mason had a solid steady game again, nothing flash butRose's petulance showing through again. Bit of a liability with his lack of mind control but playing better than he was last season. More restricted going forward so the defensive unit is better. Walker looks all at sea and unfit. Daws is Daws but some good blocks as usual. Townsend must get his head up when running with the ball! Also needs to control his passes, yesterday he tried to play a couple of through balls but the speed wasn't right. But at least he tried, so that's an improvement from him. Kane ran around and tried to make things happen but, apart from his goal, zilch. After the break all the half-time replacements were better than those replaced apart from Eriksen/Lamela swap. Falque for Holtby also no improvement. Fredericks was a breath of fresh air when he was introduced and certainly increased the speed of our attacking. Nice to see McGee get some gametime and did nothing wrong although I was nervous a couple of times when playing keep ball with Dawson. As I say all IMHO. Was Kaboul's lack of play a sign of his injury problems? Can't think why MP would play Dawson for 90 minutes unless to have a look at his stamina?Anyway unbeaten tour and everybody got some game time to get them up t

Good first post longtime. I can't agree with the second one.
MAN ON!
longtimespur, that's what I was getting at. I meant the 3 behind the striker would be more involved than last season in trying to score, not that they would be the main threat. Much more freedom up front and to my mind it doesn't really matter who is getting the goals out of them but that they're all showing their worth and fully involved in an attacking sense. Holtby, Lamela and Soldado have all shown they work well in that set up...and surprisingly Lennon looks far more effective and is doing really well playing in that system.

Shedboy, I dont personally think we are in the conversation this year. Lets face facts the big 4 or 5 are spending zillions on already stronger teams. I see us finishing 6th with hopefully signs that Poch is a long-term fit for us. Although Peles posts are tedious in their monotony he is essentially right. The only way we can really compete is for a wealthy benefactor to throw a billion pounds at us. With talk of a London NFL franchise around 2017 perhaps the stars are aligning for some sort of joint venture with NFL to build the stadium, properly compete and instantly make us massive in the US. Would be an attractive proposition for a new owner. Just need to stay in the mix until these kind of opportunities present themselves. It could all change v.quickly! In the meantime im just going to enjoy the season for what it is. Expectations pretty low but we have squad to at least be same as last year.
StillRickyVilla
LTS referring to the performance on the pitch, not the league position. Poch has a lot of work to do, in a short time

I think it's the curse of ENIC that causes all these BOLD and double posting here!....may be the colour yellow is getting to us!
Critical_Spur
As to all the back passing, especially in the second half yesterday: This was a planned activity, with lots of triangles set up with the point of the triangle receiving a backwards pass, then looking to hook up with a down field pass. My guess is that the lads exaggerated these triangles and their back passes because the plan was to use the match to practice the formation. I doubt we'll see the same thing in such an exaggerated form once the PL matches start for real. It was much like a musician practicing scales to get the sensori-motor patterns down before going onto the stage to play actual music.
Falstaff the Fool
Hmm.. here we go again.. according to Pele 10...Levy is responsible for backing his managers (at the time Harry) decisions on players.. the same manager who saved us from 2 points in 8 games, took us to wembley in Carling Cup (lost to Man Utd i was there) then semi final FA cup (lost to Pompey, i was there again!) qualified for Champions League, then beat both Milan Teams, then lost to R Madrid in 1/4 final, while playing the attacking game (quality players, Modric Bale Ade, )for almost 3 seasons and which was the best in PL, as admitted by Alex Fergi ...Levy also Built the new training ground at Enfield.. the best in Europe.. Now he is blamed for the kit design, and physically manufacturing the socks and shirts.. The fact that the sponsors of the club, yes those that pay £ millions are entitled to display their logos / colours in our kit... so THFC can build the new stadium, and have money to buy in players, pay wages etc. We do not have the necessary financial income, to spend...small stadium, delayed cos of Archway Steel for 3 years... Yet we are in the top section of PL, every year, playing in Europe for last 9 years, and we compete against 4 clubs who can out spend us any day of the week... despite our Boardroom people / shareholders.. COYS

Block ... Hell, I didnít realise Levy was so bad until you explained how poor he has made us. We should really be in the fourth division by now with that kind of record. Itís hard to believe that he managed to get us to the third round of the FA Cup every year.

Style is a matter of taste. I love the away kit. Yellow doesn't bother me at all. The red in the home kit is probably worth 20 Million pounds a year, no problem with that either.

Erratic refereeing, to say the least. TV commentators hung up on statistics that just got repeated, thus emphasising how relatively little stats on their own say about a player. Eriksen still pre-season-fuzzy but you know he'll have his characteristic nimblefootedness and precision when it matters, while his creativity is so natural as always to be 'on'. Capoue good again, likewise Holtby, Lennon, Fredericks. The happier Lamela is purring and playing already, and Rose and Davies are noticeably focused. Soldado contributed a fair bit, certainly paid his way, without being attention-grabbing.
Airwave
LTS apologies I thought you were talking about the company we find in VS!
Highgatespur
Airwave, agreed with everything you said. Soldado only really had one good shot at the goal for which the defender made a good sliding block. I just hope we don't get to see the frustrations on his face like last season, else it could become the psychological thing that haunts him. In this game he certainly didn't play as a LONE striker, more a part of an attacking trio. COYS!
Critical_Spur
Just watched the game, probably the worst of the three performances on the tour. There appeared to be less crispness and tempo about our play, poor ball retention, no really outstanding performances against, what according to results this season, is the worst of the three teams we have faced. I suppose the only eye catching performance was Holtby, for his effort, his mobility, and his pressing of the player with the ball. Capoue did OK, as did Lamela. I see Dawson is still determined to play one Glen Hoddle pass, in his career, or are those 60 yard humps up the pitch, just simply that. Surely there is a replacement for him on the agenda.
Frank
Interesting news about Remy and L'pool - I say get in there Spurs and sign him up - remember Demba Ba ... Remy for 6m - GREAT deal
Highgatespur
Critical, I do like the idea of 3 attackers and I hope Soldado keeps on contributing to creating goals for others - to me it doesn't who scores as long as goals are scored. There's been plenty of goal scorers who had a great time in creating the chances. So, I don't mind if Soldado doesn't score as many as we hope he does as long as others are taking up those chances being created by him!
Highgatespur
Frank, a lot more positives, overwhelming I'd say, than the negatives that's come out of the tour; No new negatives in my mind, just confirmation of those we knew that were there before. Now for the real work, the integration of the whole squad with their new coaches - about 11 of them...
Highgatespur
Absolutely Highgate But I am nonetheless concerned about the psychological effect that can impact players, despite him being very experienced. Just adds unnecessary pressure. Hope Poch supports him well. COYS!

ps., we now have to accommodate Ade and others. BTW, agree also about Remy. Finally, for me I was quite impressed with all the kids' showing in the friendlies, even the young goalkeeper getting a few minutes and showed confidence.
Critical_Spur
On the kit I don't know why we can't ever design something that looks good, promotes the sponsors and is always based on white top, dark blue shorts and white socks, no shi1 colours, hoops on the socks, or white shorts FFS... This is one area Pele is right, Levy has not managered the fashion department at all well... I actually make all my spurs gear by buying something decent and putting a spurs badge on it, looks good, get lots of compliments rather than looking like a tw4t with a big yellow stripe all over you on the bus home... This post also represents how interested I am in friendies....

If Remy has failed a Liverpool medical, would he pass a Spurs medical. Haven't we had enough bother with sick notes in the past, do we need another potential problem. Of course you could sign him in spite of, or without a medical, and how much insurance would we be able to get.
Frank
Remy went to QPR was loaned out and now he's going for cheaper than Siggy. There has to be a good, (or bad) reason for all of that.
MAN ON!
No, Pele is neither right nor is he correct. He is stating an opinion. He doesn't like the kits. Others don't either. Is it perhaps possible that ENIC, UA and the Sponsors (all opt whom have integral input on the kits) have a different audience in mind with their designs than those who will shell out the monies each and every season on kits whether they like them or not? Could it just be that they are developing products that will appeal to certain markets while also leaving a touch of the traditional so that the products still have appeal to the "older" guard fans? Could it be that the stadium and the plans already have something to do with the NFL and other ventures and that ENIC (a billionaire corporation) has every intent to exploit those possibilities. AS for other owners coming in and spending their own monies to win, careful what you wish for. Isn't that what the Hull Tigers are doing (sounds like a baseball team - who is that marketed to?), isn't that what Fernandez is doing at QPR (he is backed by ridiculously wealthy owners who refuse to dip in to their own funds), isn't that what was happening at Rangers in Scotland, isn't that what Monaco is doing while playing in front of 12k fans for home games, isn't that what Kroenke is doing at Arsenal (he owns an NFL franchise, NHL franchise, Arsenal, MLL franchise etc). You see, if the goal of the owner is to build the brand and make svn more money, they are unlikely to just spend money for the sake of it. There aren't very many Russian Oil Ty*****s or Sheiks out there willing to spend just for the sake of it. Anyone buying in to the PL knows there are only 4 CL spots. There remain Chelsea, United and City who can compete up there every year. Liverpool and Arsenal also have monies. There are no guarantees. Still wondering how West Ham will be overtaking us when they are playing in the OS in the Championship. Spurs have rich owners. Like Arsenal's owners, they are businessmen and are running a business. Since, in both cases, the value of the asset continues to appreciate, they are both doing a good job. Read the audited financial reports. They all say that the clubs are well run. Again, to change all that is really simple. Take 1B out of your bank account, plunk it down and the team will be yours. Using PSG, Chelsea, City and Monaco as recent examples, after you plunk down the 1B to buy, you then need to plunk a further .5B to 1B in net transfers and hope that it all works out. Normal time for success will be 3-5 seasons. By then you will be 2B out of pocket with an asset that may have slightly appreciated. No worries though. It's you money and you don't care. Since that's how all Billionaires became Billionaires, you clearly have a great working model. All you need to do is put down the monies. What are you waiting for? COYS
peterballb
The reality is that no one is going to sign Remy unless he is 100% healthy. He wants a wage increase (already on ridiculous wages). WE'll take him, if he comes for about 5M and if he takes a wage cut. Oddly, pretty much why Arsenal didn't do it. I believe they were willing to pay the 8M but were insisting he take a salary cut. My question is, if he's all that, why would QPR not want to keep him? Won't his great play and goals keep them in the PL. Isn't that their goal this season? He is clearly damaged goods. 5M on a 4 year deal at 60k/week, that would be my max. COYS
peterballb
Peter; no, I think whoever is in charge of kit design is just cr4p at it mate, they think by putting really stupid colours on it will stand out and get more attention... Winning cups and playing in a the champions league will do that, having a decent looking kit will mean loads more sales in the UK... Pele is right, Loser Levy has fckd up here.
T.H.F.Chris
peterbalb has analysed it, though, and it's enough of an all-things-considered analysis to be worthwhile. The player Remy has a problem.
Airwave
No Peter it is an obvious retaliation by Levy against Pele10. Danny boy is clearly a student of Vital spurs and has made it his mission to extract revenge on Pele by designing, stitching and selling spurs kits that will not appeal to Pele! I wish this war between the two of them would end, pele points to Levy's lack of trophies so the dude delays the stadium. Pele askes why the stadium is delayed so levy sells Gareth bales. Pele accuses levy of squandering the profits from Bales sale so Levy hand paints a yellow stripe on every away kit. And as usual as this titanic battle rages we innocent Spurs fans are the true victims. Is there no end to this madness, will someone please think of the children?!
Slurms McKenzie
I stopped liking kits the minute they put sponsorship logos on them. It is however a very big money spinner and it won't be changing anytime soon. Personally I don't wanna wear any item of clothing that makes me a walking advert for a multi-national company, with or without the Spurs emblem.... They should be paying me for the exposure not charging the earth for me to be a moving promo... I say one thing, whatever any of us think about Pele, he does get people talking and that's what it's all about... Up the Petticoat Lane!
MAN ON!
MAN ON! you almost got it there. The club gets paid by the sponsor to use the club's goodwill and image to get you to advertise for the sponsor. As the club needs to maximize those revenues they sell to the highest bidder and allow the kit-maker who will pay the most for the privilege of having their brand out there too, to produce the kits. The decisions are not Spurs alone. There is input and demands made by Spurs, UA and AIA, all with a view to maximize the exposure. What benefits one, benefits them all. As I said, they are not marketing to those who buy the kits every year. They are marketing to those who don't. Just have a look in the stands when we host QPR. I'll bet a full third of the fans in the stadium will have a shirt with AIA in bright red on it and virtually all of them didn't like it. So who's the smart one. COYS
peterballb
peterballb. Exactly!
MAN ON!
Out of the 9 closest people around me (paying £970pa season ticket so obviously can afford it) only one had last seasons kit, no where near a third. The main reason was the stupid blue logo in the middle...

Whether this is a great marketing ploy or not (we'll never really know or get to the end of an arguement) the fact is the kits are rubbish. Winning trophies may be difficult but designing a decent kit fans are proud to wear should be easy and morally an essential requirement of any football owner.
T.H.F.Chris
T.H.F.Chris. That is true for a lot of fans. I made up my mind not to buy shirts for the reasons I've said but if one came out that I felt really proud to wear I might just ignore my principles. I do see a lot of fans wearing their favourites from seasons past but I know that a lot will also buy the latest one but not be seen to wear it. It is objective though and one mans meat........
MAN ON!
I mean *subjective*......
MAN ON!
T.H.F.Chris, we'll see. There were an awful lot of this hideous HP logo shirts out there. I noticed a lot of red AIA shirts in the three games in North America. Personally, I liked one of the HP kits (did not spend the $), liked most of the Aurasma and Investec ones made by UA, and only one of the previous ones made by Puma. WE all have our likes and our dislikes. I'll take a good look when we play QPR to see what people have. On another note, you pay 970 GBP, or just under $1,800.00 CDN. Best tickets to watch Spurs play TFC in a friendly were over $180 CDN and the majority of the tickets were in excess of 30GBP. Anything close to the sidelines was at least 50GBP. For a friendly match. COYS
peterballb
Peterb. At WHL the prices per game.. adult ticket £45 - £73 depending on where you sit, and opposition team. Upper East Stand restriced view (damn grey posts in way of half of Paxton Goal) £865 this year for 19 games + 2 cup games.
Block D Spurs
MAN ON I was interested to hear your principles on why you stopped buying,,, the problem is sponsorship does work,, example: you were spurs a bit before my time, I started supporting spurs us during the Holsten period and I still buy the odd can to very strange looks of my [fellow spurs] friends... Equally I will never buy anything JVC related or fly Emeriates - unless Ryanair are the only other choice...

Peter, I hear what you are saying I just don't get why they can't do both, good sponsorship and a good looking kit, the neon out there elements is just i creative marketing, real idiots guide to getting your kit noticed....... On the tickets even though the tour matches are friendliest they are sold at a premium because of basic supply and demand, if spurs only played three times at WHL tickets would sell be £100's,,, obviously not a fair comparison but I don't suppose the potential NFL matches will be that cheap over here, UK based US citizens would love to see their team or at least favourite sport. COYS !!
T.H.F.Chris

T.H.F.Chris
They still do Holsten?
MAN ON!
The training kits are often okay because the don't have the bloody logos!
MAN ON!
I'm old fashioned Chris, in that respect. I want my labels, to be on the inside of my clothes... Shoes, trainers etc., should never have writing on them. I understand how sponsorship works of course and it's just a personal bug-bear of mine.
MAN ON!
So you still follow the bear.....
MAN ON!
that's why I find it interesting mate, I can't imagine football, life without sponsorship,,, wasn't questioning your knowledge on the subject either, just saying how annoying (and brilliant) it is the fact it works - physiology and all that...... And yes, Holsten still going, that 1988 deal was a good investment for them!
T.H.F.Chris
I'm a sucker for advertising and hype as much as anyone. Bloody hard not to be.... ;-) I know you wasn't questioning me on that.....
MAN ON!
I'll no it's gone too far when the International teams are being sponsored...
MAN ON!
I'll know...
MAN ON!
The other thing that is interesting is we'll all get used to the kit and like it by October, that's probably one of the reasons they used to bring it out so late after the season started...
T.H.F.Chris
True. Like I said though if one came along that I really liked I would ignore the Logos, if I think they don't look too much out of place. It's personal taste as much as anything.
MAN ON!
It can all sound trivial talking about the kit like this but it is our emblem, our identity and badge of honour.
MAN ON!
Good night...
MAN ON!
Haha, indeed; trivial, tribal and much more interesting than friendlies...
T.H.F.Chris
If we are winning, more will be bought. If people believe in the players and the coach, more will be bought. Further we go in cups, more will be bought. They sell every year. The question is, how many more will we sell in North America and Asia? I believe that to be their target group. COYS
peterballb
I liked that kit Spurs wore the other day when playing in Chicago, especially the clutch of yellow lines leading up to the front collar.
