Spurs close to Dier Completion.

Tottenham have confirmed that they gave agreed terms to sign 20 year old centre back, Eric Dier from Sporting Lisbon.

The deal only requires the player to complete his medical, so you would assume that barring a last minute hitch, Dier will become a Spurs player over the weekend, if not later today. An England U-21 player, Dier is a ball playing centre back, who also have the ability to play in a defensive midfield role, should he be required.

I have to confess to have never seen the boy play, so can`t really comment, though it seems he has the right mix of technical ability and defensive mindset, to make him an appealing prospect. He is suggested as being two footed, which is always a bonus, but it is will now be interesting to see what plans Pochettino has for him in the short term.

We have all seem that Poch is very happy to play the kids and at 20, he is almost a veteran compared to the likes of Shaw and Chambers at Southampton, so is he a player that will jump straight in to fist team contention and if so, at the expense of who?

With the futures unclear on both Dawson and Chiriches, does this move allow one or even both to move on? The cautious side of me, would worry slightly that selling Dawson for a 20 year old with barely 30 professional games under his belt is a major gamble, but Poch`s style perhaps lends itself to both ball players and also young legs, neither of which are Michael Dawson, whilst who knows what the future brings for Chiriches...

Dont know much of him, but a promising acquisition! I dunno but theres alwats something more satisfying about buying young British players. ..
thfc1989
Not sure playing Frank in CB instead of Dawson would be too much of a gamble. Sounds like we continue to identify the key areas and right talent to play there. Pleased with this buy, far more than say a Lovren deal. Sporting fans really rate this guy. So, a CB and LB in, as well as back up keeper. Top three priorities, tick. Now for one special in Danny ???
Windlespur
Another player to be developed into a good player and just when he begins to make a difference he will be sold, for profit, by Levy as always.
jordtheyid
Windlespur not sure I agree. We still have the gaping whole that is our left wing and no adequate backup up front. You cannot call 2 goal from open play Soldado adequate backup.
jordtheyid
I've seen him, and although young, seems more mature, turned down the chance to play for Portugal, big enough to hold his own, introduce him slowly and will develope into a top player
Algarvespur
Jordtheyid remember the players we sold for profit where either surplus to requirements or the players wanted out I.e Berbatov, Carrick, Modric and Bale. VDV also wanted to go back to Germany after his stint in England. COYS!

Right now id prefer to sign and play peter crouch in central defence instead of Dawson. Too slow and loves defending so much every time he gets the ball he gives it back to the other team, admirable but not for me. OX, THE SITE IS NOW SO HEAVY IN POP UPS AND ADVERTISING I COULD NOT USE IT ON MY PC! I GENUINELY HAD TO GO GET MY I PAD! Please have a word with those upstairs because it's going to ruin vital vs soon
spurticus87
Great positivity there Jord, few posts back everyone was saying we need a CB and IMO we have gotten one of the best young English cbs out there, really like Dier could be just what we need our own Stones,. Plus all but like 2 clubs lose players theyd want to keep.
ThundaJay
LM however should now be the target and for me the perfect guy is Jay-Rod can cover LM and ST so just want we need and knows the manager, if that inj hasnt affected him at all be great. I wanted him from Burnley before I knew he was comfortable coming from the left. However, if he is not for sell is Ings worth a punt very similar but actually he's quiet a bit quicker.
ThundaJay
This link has an interesting article on why we didn't pay so much for the player http://www.thetottenhamway.com/2014/08/01/spurs-exploited-a-clause-in-eric-dier-s-contract-to-sign-him-on-the-cheap/?

I cant believe what im reading, is it worth coming on here to read crap, we buy a young 20 year old with talent and english and some one talks about spurs getting rid when he gets older, what a joke.
spurs50yrs
spurticus87... I recommended adblock to you a few weeks ago... Google it and download it. It works!
MAN ON!
Our direct competition Everton has the 'Rolling" Stones, We have Dier Staits. Both have played a similar number of games at "top" level. Who got the better deal? Btw, any truth we are lending him back so he can get i year CL experience?
10iscoach
we've been watching this guy for ages...so hopefully they've seen something recently as the buzz around him seemed to have gone flat (as I thought had his form!)....I would suggest he's not ready for 1st team duties in the PL if he can't hold down a place in the Sporting team...
shedboy2
Good luck to him, not sure if he will go straight into the first team squad but has potential. Will be interesting to see who flies out for our friendly tomorrow and who stays back.
Kong
MAN ON..is right get adblock it does the job
spurs50yrs
The pleasing thing here, or one of them anyway, is the potential for growth when the price is considered. Because we chose to dip into the foreign market we got ourselves a bargain. As we saw with Shaw, Chambers, and maybe even our own Ben Davies to a degree, buying home-based players whacks up the price something chronic. If we have tried to buy an established England U-21 centre-back from a Premier League rival you could have easily put a '1' in front of the figure we've paid. Top bit if business, and a player who I admittedly have limited knowledge of but who comes with glowing references from all concerned. No complaints from this fella. Come on you beautiful Spurs!!!
LilyWhiteHart
Man On, tx, read the thread and downloaded it. Godsend, hope it lasts
10iscoach
I did read that we're loaning him straight back to Sporting... Not sure if it's true.
MAN ON!
A lot of Faith being put into the new coaches and excellent training facilities......for these Young Signings. Hope they bare fruit.
82spursdebut
Not seen too much of this lad, but I was chatting to a friend last night who has seen him play a few times, twice by being at the actual game....sounds like he's a good prospect, nothing more than that - and I don't see that as a bad thing. I've heard he's in the Ledley / Rio mold (fingers crossed he's half as good as The King), reads the game very well & doesn't so much tackle, as take the ball from people, before distributing it well....I think this is the end for Chiriches though. Lastly, 4 million is peanuts for an England u21 international. Happy with this signing.
King26
With all respect to Michael Dawson and the years of mostly good service, can he play better than last season, or will his age actually make him play worse (horrors)!!! this kid can only improve, and even if he only match what Dawson did the season before last, its an improvement on last season. Kaboul will probably only play PL if management is smart, alongside Verts(hopefully), so i suggest between Dawson, Fryers and Dier Straits they will get plenty of cup time. any news on the portugeuse defender we were linked with? Btw i write Chiriches off as sold already.
10iscoach
Good buy... 20 years old... U21 International... big and strong by the looks of him.. could be a great move by Levy there.

More movement to come? Davies, Dier and Vorm.. i m happy with up to now..

Zakkari Bakkali was the one i personally wanted. I think PSG have got him for 2-3m... amazing future talent...
Yidmarks
Meant to add, I have to say I'm happy with the signings thus far. Whether or not they're the 3 players I, or any one of you would have selected, is obviously up for debate....but we were all saying how important we believed a b/u keeper, a left back and some cover at centre back were...Pochettino has now addressed those 3 positions with his 1st 3 signings. Like I say, personnel wise, I'm sure we would all have targeted different players? But we have a manger who, on paper and past systems at Southampton, will play football in the way we like seeing it played - high pressing & fast....we have to trust that he knows what he is doing & therefore trust his opinion on players until we're given reason to doubt him.
King26
MAN ON... i heard the same at the start of the story a week ago..

I think he will go straight onto our squad now..!
Yidmarks
as opposed to last year, some thought seems to have gone into our tfer dealings this time round, no knee jerk panic over inflated buying!! will we get every target, as we have already seen, NO!! but there seems to be a plan B for astute buys to strengthen the squad, looking toward the future. i feel we still need an experienced CB, for the long ball grinds up north, someone like Shawcross, no nonsense, i'll kick ur *** defender. a deep lying playmaker, altho in Holtby i personally think we have one. ALM we seem lite. A young striker with speed at the right price. Kane is young and has prescence, but speed, no. The balance of the squad looks better. Still feel 2 of Dembele, Sandro and Paulinho will be sold tho.
10iscoach
I don't think this will be our last centre half signing this transfer window but it's great news. With Veljkovic's showing in US and Dier joining we are starting to go down the right path where these players can learn to play to Poch's philosophy. That cannot happen with Dawson who surely has to go now.
muttley
Morning all. Well, I feel a tad more upbeat today so Iíll try and start off positive. Young, played in the top division of the respective country, and English. A ball winning centre back by all accounts that we need so if all goes to plan, a younger better Dawson. Great signing if he is good enough to come straight into the squad, but my suspicions are that he will be going out on loan, which leaves us in the same boat with a big bloody hole in it!

Ok so we now have Vert, Kabs, Vlad, Daws, Dier. I assume by this that one will be going so who is the no1 pairing? Daws is still average, Kabs is still a ticking injury bomb (and he has NEVER regained his best form), Vlad is still up for debate as heís either been brilliant or abysmal, so do we assume that Dier has been brought in to pair with Vertonghen?

What really would make sense is if we see Daws AND Kaboul / Vlad sold this window and Another TOP CB brought in. Then we would have Vert and ďinsert NameĒ as no1 paring and Kaboul/ Vlad and Dier to play in cups etc whilst developing Dier in the League slowly. Maybe thatís the plan.
hudderspur
Off Topic - Genoa have announced the signing of Iago Falque, one in and one out.
Kong
Doesnt Dier's age qualify him as a free home grown pick? if thats the case frees up a squad place. might be worthwhile keeping Dawson for some games this season cos of his exp, Ones with big strikers. Daws is normally pretty good in those, where his speed or lack thereof isnt exposed. Early rounds of cups, he is unlikely to be found out often, and younger defenders can learn from him. He has leadership skills, experience, and feel he would be an asset to Spurs for ONE more season, til Dier Straits and Fryers properly bed in.
10iscoach
Hopefully will develop into a good player, but I seriously doubt the idea is to push him straight into the team.
jod
Kong - that's great news as well. We have to keep thinning the squad and Poch has had some time to assess him. If he's deemed as surplus then so be it.
muttley
Deal confirmed on official site dependent on passing medical. No report on there about being loaned back soi looking like he is straight into the squad, unless things change.
BigSpursFan
Someone pointed out that Jan has yet to sign his offered extension. I'm hoping he does this soon and that he's not considering any potential offers. Am I right in thinking that Jan will still be our only left sided/footed CB? Milos can play left but is right-footed.
MAN ON!
Thanks man on, will get on it! Almost punched my laptop! Personally I think if your good enough, your old enough! At 20 he is a man and there is no reason he can't be a valued squad player this season! Was there a worse cb in the league than Dawson last year? He can't be worse! Just look at the hammerings we took with him at the back last season
spurticus87
Dier subject to a medical....reading that Chelski have been linked in the past. If we end up with a smug Mourinho again, I'll do something terrible!!!
King26
spurticus87... It's free by the way..
MAN ON!
Off topic, i see Ade in squad for Celtic. first preseason game in how many years.....?
10iscoach
spurticus87.. I agree that age is not a problem if you are good enough but CB is considered a position where experience and maturity is usualy needed. This guy may be mature and strong for his age, I don't know but, he's not played many competitive matches up to now.
MAN ON!
I never knew there were 7 Dawsons playing at spurs, Dawson in goal, 2 CB Dawsons, RB & LB Dawson, and 2 MF Dawsons, now i understand why we blame him IT WAS ALL HES FAULT, all the other players were fantastic, they were passing the ball around and scored lots and lots of goals, soon as we get rid of Dawson we can we all the cups and the premiership, sorted
spurs50yrs
any word on that other defender Mussicio or however you spell it? the Portugeuse guy...... Dier IS a free pick isnt he, same as Fryers was?
10iscoach
Win all the cups, sorry
spurs50yrs
coops - Spurs need to find a defender with a rare ability i.e. a fully functional football brain :-)
muttley
I forgot Zeki Fryers who is left-sided.....
MAN ON!
Man On - I have a feeling Fryers will be out on loan. He's only had 26 senior appearances across Utd, Std Liege and Spurs. I don't think we will discard him but can see him out on loan where he can play every week. Still waiting on news that Ekotto has found a club as well. It's all quiet there.
muttley
Dier is apparently another player that has preferred us to the Gooners. Always good to hear, if true.
MAN ON!
muttley. You could be right there.
MAN ON!
Those who have been crying out for the new Stadium can hardly complain when the club starts signing players and renewing contracts to see them through the redevelopment phase. YOung promising CB and a new five year contract for Rose. Tied all together by the appointment of a coach who has s reputation for developing young talent!
Slurms McKenzie
We now have a lot of very good and young talent from home and abroad. I think the future is looking good.
MAN ON!
Everyone is saying how great Dier is, I guarantee 90% of those have never seen him play a single minute of football. The optimism is blind from THFC fans yet again this summer as it was last summer when Baldini put the final nail in the coffin. We simply have no ambition, where are the top signings? Everton have even moved ahead of us in terms of financial ambition and buying quality players to actually improve a team rather than a balance sheet in the future.
jordtheyid
jordtheyid, what do you want us to do, criticise Dier. If he is joining us then we need to support him and big him up.
Kong
The window has not closed yet, 3 signings and still same old clap trap
spurs50yrs
The season is just over 2 weeks away and the TW is open for the month of August. It may be the shop window but we can't just turn up at the fantasy football store and purchase a team full of high end Internationals. If only it were that simple.

i remember seeing this dude on football focus some time back
tarkan mardinCOYS
Just seen this photo of the new centre back on the Spurs website. What is interesting is the shirt Dier is wearing. (I can't comment on is ability, never seen the kid) The England shirt which is designed by Nike, which is is more a real Tottenham looking shirt that anything I have in several decades. Simple clean and stylish! http://www.tottenhamhotspur.com/news/dier-move-agreed-310714/. A classic Tottenham shirt! (without the huge red AIA logos of course!) I would would love to buy myself a Spurs shirt, but I'm not buying this disgusting tasteless, crap!!! http://shop.tottenhamhotspur.com/branch/kit

jordtheyid... The optimism isn't blind. We could easily say that your negativity is blind. None of it is blind, it's just a point of view.
MAN ON!
A player that really impressed me in the pre season games is Yago Falque. I was hoping he would step into the first team this season. Moved on of course by the bean counter...
Pele10
Man on, I agree that centre halves mature later but if he has the talent then I would like to see him involved in Europa and cup games to develop a relationship with the rest of the defence whilst bringing him on. SPURS50, my apologies on the Dawson blaming, he has irritated me for years sending long balls to Defoe and Lennon. It is not fair to blame him alone, I also blame Rose largely too. I font believe schmiechel, cannavaro and cafu could have stopped any onslaughts with those 2 alongside them

If we need to offload another cb as well as Dawson I think we should dump Kaboul as he is injury prone and mistake ridden.Vlad we must keep as a good squad player. He is young ,a great tackler and can look dangerous when coming forward. He makes the odd mistake but who wouldn't standing next to that dithering numpty,Dawson.Even Verts looks nervous paired with Daws!
Greavesaboveall
In fact I've read that he compares to a young Rio...
MAN ON!
a good signing on the face of it.one for the future but still need a centre half for the here and now.a proper hard ugly bruiser type
tarkan mardinCOYS
i would have re-signed Caulker and brought in Ferdinand for the top level experience he would have brought the club, rather than go for an unproven kid... It's clear Rio wanted to return to his London roots and we could have had him. Even if Rio only played 50% of the games his experience, (Has won everything at club level, would have been huge around the club!)) Anyway, he can't be that good if top 4 Harry (twice) bought him. Can he???
Pele10
There's still Micah Richards as a possibility. I'd take him, he's still young but has plenty of PL experience.
MAN ON!
He is right footed but has played left.
MAN ON!
It's times like these I really appreciate Coopsieyid's input. Everyone was drawing a blank on Dier and a bit unsure about the quality of our purchase. There you go, within an hour the doom and gloom has been lifted. Thanks Coopsie for sharing the snippets. More of the same on our other targets please. COYS!
Critical_Spur
I read that Dier will cost around 4 million, which represents very good business if we can train him up and sell him on like Caulker and double or triple the club's investment in him! The bean counter is up to his same old, empty trophy cabinet, no CL football, ENIC Auction House, buy to sell tricks...
Pele10
cynical pele.very cynical indeed
tarkan mardinCOYS
Pele, I note where you are coming from re experience, but what (IMO) Poch is attempting to do is assemble a squad that HE feels he can coach to meet is style. I have already seen the impact he is having on Rose and conversely the failure of Daws to learn new tricks. Rio, like Daws, offers very little moving the club forward and let Harry recruit all the geriatrics! We need the new generation players in Poch's vision who will learn and adapt. So, I think we are going about it the right way......so far! COYS!
Critical_Spur
And the transfer windows is far from closed!
Critical_Spur
JordtheYid - How on Earth have Everton added anything to what they had last year? All they have done so far is tie-down two players who they already had on loan to permanent deals. That isn't improvement to last year, it's status quo. And as for castigating some of the fans on here for their 'blind optimism' in support of the Dier signing, I really don't know where you get the neck to do so. Would you rather we all revert to your brand of 'blind pessmism' and write off an obviously sought after young player who has top-flight experience despite his age and who we have managed to get for well under the current market value?! Come on you beautiful Spurs!!!
LilyWhiteHart
It looks very much like a plan for the future to me..... No stop-gaps these past 2 seasons, apart from Sherwood. I'm happy. Let's hope our football keeps me that way.
MAN ON!
tarkan mardinCOYS, How can you not be cynical after a decade and a half of ENIC? The Arsenal have come above us in each and every season of Lewis/Levy running the show! We haven't reached a single FA Cup or European final, and Joe Lewis has the worst trophy per season percentage of any THFC owner since world War 2, despite being the most wealthy owner in the club's history by several billion! Imagine If we would have been told those statistical truthful facts ahead of ENIC's arrival? That we knew our future over the next 14 seasons? We would have been screaming ENIC OUT before the little LOSER had the chance to seat down on his plastic ENIC thrown, up there in the directors box!!!
Pele10
I mean last season and the coming one...
MAN ON!
Pele10 - Rio has been in decline for years now and is not at top 6 level. Considering he's 35, is injury prone and will have sizeable wage demands means he would be a poor option, especially considering the type of football Pochettino seems to be wanting us to play. He's a classic Redknapp signing, let Harry have him.
rahn DMC
In regards to Eric Dier, he seems like a good prospect, I'm not going to get over excited because I've never seen him play, but I like the fact that he's highly rated, sounds composed on the ball and is English/young and only £4M. Pochettino worked well with the young players at Southampton so hopefully he can do the same with us. I hope we don't rush the young players and then overhype them as soon as they have one decent game.
rahn DMC
It wasn't so long ago that Dawson was chosen by Cappello as back-up to Rio. Times have changed but Dawson is still good enough to be back-up for Spurs, IMO.
MAN ON!
There have been rumours about this player's ability for a while, so I am glad that the signing has been made. I hope to see him play for Spurs.
Airwave
but remember their was even bigger hype with zeki fryers and to me im not sure about him.
tarkan mardinCOYS
Critical_Spur, You write, "Poch is attempting to do is assemble a squad"... When has LOSER Levy given anyone of his head coaches the opportunity to assemble and create their own squads? Have you not heard what AVB, Harry, Ramos, Santini, Jol etc etc said about the huge frustrations they had, not being able to choose, select, their chosen players to create their own teams... Ramos and AVB both spoke of this as recently as last season...
Pele10
They say a Leopard can't change it's spots but Mr Levy is not a wild cat, he's a very shrewd, level-headed and successful businessman. To be in his position requires flexibly and a will to learn by one's mistakes and move forward progressively. Could it be that is exactly what he is doing with Spurs? He is no fool.
MAN ON!
Pele if Caulker had kept is pecker in his pants and not tried to rattel teh owners grand-daughter he might still be at the club. He was sold fo rths reasoan dn was never coming back fo the same reason.
Slurms McKenzie
Fryers seems like the odd man out. Third choice LB and seventh choice CB at the moment. withthe signing of Dier we now have 6 CB backs at the club and Fryers and capoue who can both "do a job" there! Why are we still looking for CBs??
Slurms McKenzie
Grant Halls ...THFC contract expires May 2015....will be well over 23 in age. Currently on season loan to Birmingham.
82spursdebut
Slurms - because we're looking for new homes for centre backs. It feels like only Verts, Velkjovic and Dier are safe. Dawson surely has to go, Kaboul has only 1 year left on his contract and seems injury prone whilst Chiriches is strangely being linked away which I find a bit strange. Khumalo is still driving around London looking for WHL. I have no clue what Poch's next chess move will be at the back.
muttley
muttley-you want to get rid of the most dependable players in dawson and put youthers in?
tarkan mardinCOYS
Personally I think Vlad needs to go, he doesn't fit in as he is a right sided player and he will not be good enough to play with Vertonghen. We have brought Dier right sided and we have kaboul and Dawson, I see no place for Vlad. Dawson and Kaboul compliment Vertonghen and with the look of Dier I think he may well do as well, but Vlad doesn't.
BigSpursFan
Having not been convinced by Vlad last season, but not really based on anything other then a limited number of games when we were in complete tourmoil at the back, it seems harsh and unfair to rule him out while insisting that Dier and Veljkovic are the bees knees. If all things were equal I would have Verts and Kaboul as my CB pairing (yes Kaboul has suffered injuries and a drop in form but he is the perfect compliment to Verts game). I feel Dawson's biggest weakness is his inability to guide the younger players around him. For this reason I don't see him as a good fit for our back up back line. Vlad and Dier with Veljkovic also getting a look in could be a useful set-up for weaker opposition and cup games . The big IF is can Kaboul stay match fit? If he can't then we still need an expereinced CB in the mould of Kaboul. Either that or Dawson becomes Verts CB partner!
Slurms McKenzie
Who is struggling with the concept of home-grown? Surely its not that difficult an idea to grasp. He was a youth player in Portugal so is homegrown to any protugese team. Like ceballos is Spanish but a home grown player for any English team.
Slurms McKenzie
Jordtheyid - you don't have to read any comments if you don't want to. You want to assume that our coaches & Manager have seen him play & rate him highly, so why does it matter if 90% on here haven't FFS. See we also got 4 million for I Falque today. Got a talented defensive prospect in a position we needed IN & a position we didnt need OUT. Balance.
Windlespur
TARKAN - did you really say 'Dawson is our most dependable player' ? I know that we can depend on him to make mistakes, give goals away, lose possession.
Windlespur
actually just to correct myself Erik Dier actually played 15 games last season for lisbon and 15 again the season before.30 in total
tarkan mardinCOYS
I've hardly seen Lamela or Vlad play and they've been with us for a year! I'll not be writing them or Spurs off, in the pre-season.
MAN ON!
tarkan mardinCOYS. 2 Less than Vlad then.
MAN ON!
I'll give them at least until just after the Hammers match......
MAN ON!
I envy Jordtheyid, Pele and Shedboy, they can't be disappointed, they can only have their expectations met or exceeded. What a wonderful place to start the season from. We "fans" who believe that Spurs will do well, that poch will be a success, that Dier will captain Engalnd for the next decade are the fools. We will suffer agony, dispair, gnashing of teeth and lamenting what might of been. While those who start each season knowing the team they support will fail, that anyone associated with the club is only there to destroy it and tear it down will smugly point to how they were right all along because Spurs only finished 6th or 5th or 4th but with no cup success, or only a Euro league trohpey and a league cup medal but a 7th place league finish as proof of how their doomsaying was the correct position to adopt. If a miracle should happen and Spurs win the damn league they will cock an eyebrow and say yea but that was inspite of the club management not because of it and besides they'll only sell off all our best players like Iago Falque and sign cheap replacements like Dier. No roller coaster seasons for these guardians of the negative and purifiers of hope! Lucky basterds!
Slurms McKenzie
Pele10, Mate, please stop living in the past. Enjoy life for what it is NOW! We HAVE progressed under ENIC ....FACT. Fine, not to everyone's liking, but every season has been different under ENIC, but for me there are signs that ENIC/Levy are also adapting. A learning curve for ALL. Who would've thought Poch would get a 5 year contract?, Who were predicting LLoris and Verts will be sold?, did we not just by the LB that we have clamouring for over the past few seasons?, Have we not been given a latest positive news about the stadium?. Is Levy/ENIC not responsible for that?...there are numerous positives if you want to look. So please be a bit more balanced with your critique. COYS!
Critical_Spur
coops-theirs a lot of complementary articles about the guy.even as far back as 2011.im just wondering why than would sporting lisbon let him go for such a small fee?
tarkan mardinCOYS
Looks promising and wish the lad luck. Thanks for the links Coopsie. Pele10 how about u call Mr Levy to have a chat about ur issues. Maybe u could even learn a thing or two ey?
Mix26
AND...before you remind us of the empty trophy cabinet, I am sure if were to win one this season, then that too will be seen as a negative in your revised criticism (2 trophies in a decade)!. I am so glad I support Spurs and not Southampton. Equally, at this moment in time, I wouldn't want a sheikh or the Russian mafia owning us. I like the ups and down of life, including Spurs. It's never boring! COYS!
Critical_Spur
Tarkan I belive that was addressed further up, something about a clause in his contract that if a bid in excess of 5million uro was made for him sporting had the option of matching the wages offered and only if they couldn't would the sale be allowed to proceed. So Spurs affered more tehn their wage structure could match!
Slurms McKenzie
And as we know from recent history the price tag paid for a player has no bearing on his ability or how he will perform, eg Soldado, Torres, Andy Carroll, Veron, Michu, eriksen etc!
Slurms McKenzie
Personally, if I was down about Spurs for any reason, I would be grateful to those that showed me some optimism and good reason to be positive. I would be happy for them as fellow Yids. Not because I'm some kind of Hippy but because I'm a Spurs supporter, through and through. Football is no different to anything in life, it can be both good and bad but, why make it sound dirty and ugly? For that, I would follow a bent politician and wear an Arsenal shirt to bed!
MAN ON!

Tarkan I suppose vital Sporting might have teh answer to that although according to most of the comments repeated here they are as baffled as you as to why such a good and promising player was allowed to leave so cheap! Credit to Baldini and Levy for this one I suppose?
Slurms McKenzie
tarkan - the words "dependable" and "Dawson" don't belong in the same sentence. There are guarantees though. He will guarantee not reading the game, being in the wrong position, diving in, being flat footed, being slow, hoofing the ball from RB to LW etc. He will also guarantee giving 100%, hitting big tackles (normally after being out of position) and being a top bloke. He's especially great at being fit when much better centre halves are injured. My opinion, but he should be part of this next phase of Spurs under Poch.

Lilywhite I may have gone slightly OTT in my critisism of the club. I actually think the signing itself could of course be good as you say. I'm just getting a bit frustrated with the fact that we haven't added any players in their prime in key positions. I'm not as pessimistic as I may seem. I think this year the focus is on playing good football, MP MUST be given the time he deserves to build something here. I think 5th/6th this year but as long as we approach things the right way and start to implement an attacking style I will be happy.

Falque move now up on official website. There is also an interesting interview with Danny Rose. Seems the THFC PR team are looking to promote his image with the fans.

For Tarkan

Sporting Lisbon have claimed that they were forced to sell defender Eric Dier to Tottenham Hotspur due to an agreement already put in place between the player and the club's previous owners.

Spurs announced on Thursday that they had agreed a five-year deal with Dier, but Sporting have indicated that they were unable to offer the defender a fresh contract in an attempt to keep him in Portugal.

An official statement read: "Sporting Clube de Portugal announces that during July, the club started negotiations with Eric Dier over the renewal of his contract.

"Unexpectedly, Sporting were confronted by the father and the official representative of the player with a transfer offer from Tottenham Hotspur, who referred to the current administration an agreement signed by previous directors and administrators, which obliged a sale of the player for a sum not exceeding Ä5m, or for Sporting to equal the proposed salary, which is impossible due to the wage structure in place, the ongoing financial restructuring and necessary sustainability of the club.

"Additionally, Sporting were informed that the player does not want to stay at the club even if the proposed salary was matched. And even if Sporting received a superior offer, whether in terms of a transfer bid or salary, from another club, the player would not accept it.

"Given the constraints outlined above, Sporting announces the sale of all economic rights for the player Eric Dier to Tottenham Hotspur, for the value of Ä5m net, without any future rights or guarantees."

Pele (probably) right about Tottenham, wrong about Rio, too old and well in decline now. He'll find it really hard playing at such a lesser club like qpr even if he is in London. We need a proper quality 25-27 yr old defender to come in and play along side Verts.
T.H.F.Chris
Coopsie, time for a nonsense thread please! COYS!
Critical_Spur
pele-don't agree your assessment of Caulker and Rio being good additions. Rio would have wanted mega money, HR gave it him, he always does. He wanted to end his stint in the PL with HR who he started his career, he said that in an interview, noway would we have got him for those two reasons. I don't think we need that type of player either, we are now at a stage that Levy has invested in Poch (FIVE YEAR CONTRACT) that shows signs we are looking to the future with stability, that he has finally accepted the new manager will need time and that because of the financial fair play thing, and the new stadium we needed and got a coach that will bring the younger players through, this will of course mean we may go backwards in terms of challenging for CL but may be not. Our purchases have been younger players to fit into Poch very competitive fitness way of playing, Rio would not have been that type of player. Why waste a season, transitional season on a aged player, best to use a transitional season on blooding in youngsters, they need experience.

Caulker I think would have been fine but would he been automatic choice, I think he would have wanted that guaranteed after his stint at Hull. If the stories about upsetting the owner is true then it was never going to happen, again for those two reasons Caulker was not coming back.

I much rather we have two seasons, first transition to find out with embraces Poch's ideas the second to build on the first using younger players mixed with experienced and take it from there than bring in players like Rio who bleed clubs dry. We already have Ade on silly wages at 30 and Soldado who is not getting younger, we cannot afford to take on players at the end of their career who want huge wages unless it is an exceptional player.
BigSpursFan
Coops some great stuff thanks.

The links are Diar are interesting. I think we need to be aware of his comments about his time at Everton. he said it took him six months to settle, England is different to what he is used to. Hope fans realise just because he is English it doesn't mean he will come over and settle straight away. He has live a Portugal life, effectively he is a foreigner and we need to be patient.

I have a good feeling about this lad from what I have read and he looks very well built for his age.

I can see one defender being sold now if he is competing and not loaned back, which I doubt he will be. That CD I would sell Vlad. Injury prone, right sided player who doesn't compliment Vertonghen. Keep Dawson for experience and he deserves his testimony. We always moan at the lack of loyalty so we ought to try and accommodate those players that have stayed loyal and Dawson is one of those. If he is happy to fight for his place then keep him. Vlad needs game time and he isn't going to get it above Kaboul and may be now Diar.
BigSpursFan
Coops-Sandro staying imo is good news. Whenever a player has a bad injury the following season they struggle. Same with Kaboul although there are rumours his injuries are similar to King, but that has never been confirmed so that could just be rubbish. Don't think we ought to write Sandro of yet.
BigSpursFan
So if Sandro is staying and Capoue stays there are your two DM's. I would expect them to either play together or compete. Be interesting where Chadli, Dembele and Holtby fit in as well as Paulinho.

None of that means that Sandro is actually staying or that he will indeed get over his injuries. Surely he was supposed to be fit when he played last season. He didn't look it...... Pochettino is the new Fergie. Is Sandro our new Keano? Bring on the trophies!
MAN ON!
coops-I agree re Paulinho and Dembele. Both are quality players technically but both have weaknesses and I don't think either of them will embrace Poch ideas but more to the point I don't see Poch feeling good about them. Dembele holds the ball too long, not Poch style and he seems to be in his shell, very poor return on creativity and goals. Paulinho I just don't see he will embrace the closing down and fitness style of Poch ideas. I would say at least one of them if not both will be moved on. I see the front line mainly being Eriksen, Lamela and Lennon/Townsend/Holtby even Chadli with striker up top. So that leaves two places and we have Sandro, Capoue, Dembele, Bentaleb, Carroll, mason now and of course if Holtby if he doesn't play in the forward line who can also play CM. Too overloaded and while Paunlinho and Dembele are better quality players to the youngsters including Holtby they imo are not going to fit in to Poch style.
BigSpursFan
MAN ON you are right,,, Sandro is hardly going to say 'Adios' to some punter at St Albans.... But Keanes injury does sound like fate, especially as the both have six letters in their names - bring on the medals ;)
T.H.F.Chris
I have stated preivously on numerous posts that sandro adn capoue are ideal competition for each other. Playing schneiderlin along side them makes perfect sense as it allos our attacking four more freedom. With Bentaleb also flirting around the first team, Mason's cameo in the us and Holtby's ulitity perhaps we could see both Demble and Paulinho depart. I can possibly see Dembele operating in that fluid attacking midfield three either central on on the right but Paulinho looks like a square peg in a round hole both as the second DMF or as a more mobile attacking midfielder.
I have also pointed out that prior to Sandro's serious knee injury he was one of the best DMF's in europe and his Stats (god I hate them) backed that up. He was as influencial as Bale in our last season under Harry and if fit will again reagin those heights! The new Cork boy from Brazil! I don't want him to stay because he can play a guitar and I don't have have a *****ter account so I don't follow him on social media!

Oops sorry Twitter but with an a in it! Hand on heart I don't see Andros townsend really suiting that fluid attacking midfield trio either do take him and paulinho out of BSF's list add Ceballos to the optiosn for the attackign trio and we currently have 6 player sto cover those three positions and if Mason goes out on loan we have four to cover the two more defensive midfield positions dembele beign one of those so possibly swap him for Schneiderlin!

As I see it, he is 20, has never played in the Championship let alone the PL and has 30 Senior games in Portugal over a couple of seasons. He is a prospect. There's lots more still to happen. COYS

Coopsie, I believe it would be a huge mistake to sell Paulinho. He is well suited to certain games, allows flexibility in Cup games and would be the goal scorer from MF that can be brougt on when we are chasing a game. He simply offers something that the others do not.

Personally, I'd rather we hang tight with what we have barring any great deals or great prospects that turn up at the last. Barcelona and Vertonghen have to be a worry. Their Plan A did not work out and he was, as I understand it, one of 2 options as Plan B. He has not signed and the money and opportunity to move to Barcelona would probably not be ignored. It would be far more than what is in our improved wage packet. I still think we should be getting in Vlaar and Schar and then seeing what develops. Rodriguez will be even cheaper in January and will be free the January following. He will have to be moved or they risk gettin nothing. Could he even pass a medical at this point? Where's Baldini? What has he got in the fire? COYS
peterballb
Sandro is off to Finland for the friendly so he is over his virus.
Kong
Peterb I don't think that Paulinho will be happy with that role within the club and I would suggest that after the world cup he will be looking for an opertunity to rebuild his reputation.
How Chadli performs over the next few weeks could dictate how urgently we need to recruit a player like Rodriguez, this fluid attackign three may well suit his skill set far more then being deployed wide left. Time will tell.
Slurms McKenzie
Really looking forward to seeing the full squad against a humiliated Celtic tomorrow, would have much rather the Celts were buzzing after dispatching Leige Warsaw but how and ever! Anyone what the deal is with Subs in Finland will we see 9 or ten subs for the second half or are they limited to five for the tournament?
Slurms McKenzie
Sorry, but I can't really see a great deal to get excited about regarding the Dier signing, another "one for the future", when to be honest what we need particularly at CB, is a proven, battle hardened, experienced, and competent defender, one for the present. We already have two young CBs in the Swiss guy, and Hall, and even Fryers and Chiriches are supposed to be expected to improve into regular PL starters. The problems we have are current, now, as we proved against the top teams in the PL last season our defense is porous to say the least, we conceded goals by the barrow load, and still have the same personnel, we only have Vertonghen who is quality, Kaboul who is a fine defender but never fully fit, only plays at very best half a season, Dawson who is nowhere near good enough, intelligent enough, or quick enough, and shouldn't still be here, Chiriches who has failed to materialize as a PL standard CB. I hope Dier is not seen as the answer, not after a dozen or so league games for Sporting Lisbon, if he is, then I am seriously worried about our decision making, it seems not to have improved, even after squandering most of a £109M spend last summer, when we got one player out of 7 who made a difference. Time is now seriously running out, with only 2 weeks to the first game, so if we don't want to continue with last season's embarrassing scorelines, we had better pull our bloody finger out and get something sorted, our transfer activity in this window, resembles somebody trying to run through treacle.
Frank
Well just read Morgan has been told again he is not leaving and has been warned about his conduct. Seems that avenue is closed, are we moving on?
BigSpursFan
The idea of Lamela, Soldado, Paulinho AND Chadli coming good next season is ridiculous; maybe one of them, I hope for Lamela and Soldado at best, get rid of Chadli and Paulinho before the window closes with Schinderland coming in the other way.
T.H.F.Chris
celtic wont play any of their first teamers.they will save them for the 2nd leg
tarkan mardinCOYS
jordtheyid, while we can afford the transfer fee for most players, we cannot afford the salaries of premium players in their prime. We valso do not have CL which many top players, in their prime, expect.

We did not want Bale to go. As I undersand it we got together all the wheelbarrows that we could, loaded them with cash and were willing to have Bale on a 5 year 180k/week salary which would have represented 1/10th of our total wage bill. Unprecedented and the absolute best we could do. He got significantly more from RM. Liverpool, to keep Suarez happy, gave him what Bale was getting at RM. The club just cannot afford those wages. I have said for a decade now, it's not the fee, it's the wage. We can't even move Dawson despite a deal being in place without buying him out. He's not on wages that he would have been on were he at City, Chelsea or United. But, the wages are far too much for the clubs that would consider buying him. Wages are the killer. It's what sinks teams. Buying an 80M player who is valued at 80M is not really an issue. The wages though will be beyond us. COYS

Yes Knog but the appointment of AVB and Sherwood will look even worse!
Slurms McKenzie
Slurms, he's part of the squad. He was not, even under AVb, ever going to be a guaranted starter. We have two games a week and only 2 or 3 (if sub) CMF'ers will be selected from Sandro, Dembele, Capoue, Paulinho, Bentaleb, Carroll, Mason, and perhaps Holtby. So long as we qualify for the Europa Group Stages (my biggest concern) we will have 2 games a week. He will have opportunities to demonstrate his value. It has to be earned and surely he understands that. COYS
peterballb

tarkan mardinCOYS
Ken Stone, that was the point of FFPR. Every club should be run within a sustainable model or they should not be permitted the revenues from Europe. It still permits you to overspend, but you must bring it back in line within the next two seasons. That's where wages get you because they are not just for one year. If we go in for Huntelaar (as an example), he will come relatively cheap. But his wages will not be low and they will be for 4 or 5 years (last contract). If he is no longer at the level in 2 years, you are on the hook for those wages and he cannot be moved. If he is on 5M per annum and your wage bill is 90M, you now need to cover all the players that are at the level for 85M. All because you have a surplus player on wages that cannot be moved. Dawson, if he is surplus and will not move, willbe 50 or 60k/week that cannot be paid to other players. You can not name him to the official squad etc, but his wages will still count against the wage budget and that is not likely to be increased because we goofed. COYS
peterballb
Just listened to Vorms interview very nice guy is my impressions. Humble and seems to me he is up for the challenge. I see him playing cup games early rounds of Europa, happy with him
BigSpursFan
I agree Tarkan.
Kong
Kong, I recently looked at the market valuations for the 7 players we bought last season. As a group, they had only depreciated 4M. We can probably all agree that even Erikssen has more in him than he showed, so if they all play to potential or close, that investment will look very good indeed especially if they are all performing in our squad. COYS
peterballb
Harsh on Naughton I always thought he was decent back up to Walker but got used alot ont ehleft which didn't suit him. Freedicks look decent in the states though. Is he ready for the step up I dunno, but I guess we'll find out because walker really didn't look match fit or match sharp!
Slurms McKenzie
I see him as cover primarily for Vertongen. Dawson should move on and leave Cheech backing up Kaboul (when fit) for the RCB spot. I'd send Fryers, Carroll, Fredricks (or sell Naughton), Mason out on loan and either sell Dembele, or send Bentaleb out on loan also. Loan them out to Prem clubs that will give them 30+ games in the season or at least Championship clubs.
alee
Slurms Kaboul can play RB while Walker improves his fitness if Federicks is not ready to step up
BigSpursFan
I want to see players that are over 21 who go out on loan to go to PL clubs where they get playing time. Otherwise we can evaluate whether they can cut it or not. Last season Carroll in championship didn't imo help him or us
BigSpursFan
I agree Peter, apart from Soldado the others we can still get good value if we ever sold them.

Well I for one have only heard good things said about young Dier. Tags such as "The New Terry", "The new Rio" to name a few. Never like the tag thing, far too early to place pressure on one so young's shoulders. Looks an absolute excellent piece of business, many others have cast admiring glances, we have acted. Takes a pretty tidy free kick by all accounts also. A two footed Cb, 6' 3", comfortable on the ball, decent in the pass, English youth International, £4 million. ALL DAY LONG!, Welcome aboard young man.
Cider spurs
T.H.F.Chris. We bought Chadli for 8M. Why could he not be a quality squad member? I rate him better than Sigurdsson who just went for Davies. Paulinho's value, in what was an up and down season, has already appreciated. There is interest out there in him. Simeone is reportedly willing, despite last season, to offer 30M Euros for Lamela. he might know something. As for Soldado, the man can score goals, is automatic from the spot and looks to have a great understanding with Lennon and Lamela. I fail to see any of that as bad. Chadli and Paulinho would probably be fair exchange for Rodriguez and Schneiderlin, but Southampton will not pay the wages that Paulinho is no doubt on. COYS
peterballb
market value according to who?
tarkan mardinCOYS
Kong - agree and I think Eriksen would sell for more. I would expect Vlad, Chadli, Paulinho Capoue to sell for similar amounts we brought them for but Soldado we will lose out and as for Lamela, could go either way depending on how good a season he has.
BigSpursFan
IF the players bought last summer come good, make a difference, and suggest they were worth the money, IF MP reproduces his Southampton form, rather than his Espanyol form, IF Liverpool and Everton struggle to cope with playing in 4 competitions, IF LVG is unable to reserrect Man Utd, IF we are able or indeed intent on making any more signings in this window. Its all IFs, BUTs, and May bes, we have done very little from a positive point of view, only indulging in a "swop" deal, Sigurdson for Daies and a few quid for Vorm, to ensure a hoped for improvement on last season, whilst others have continued to build, still no CB, Striker, no additional creativity. To rely on IF is dangerous, IF your auntie had bollox she would be your uncle, but it is highly unlikely.

And all this fretting over whether Wayne "the granny shagger" Rooney will become a wonder striker again if LVG hugs him hard enough move on the jugged ear pube haird troll is earning 300'000 grand a week and he can't be bothered to break his backside very week for the cause!!!!!

You are right Kong the appointment of Sherwood wasn't a very wise decision by Levy, yet again. I am surprised really, because if there is one thing that he has had plenty of practice at, during his 14 year tenure, it is hiring and firing coaches. Only time will tell whether his latest "rabbit out of a hat" appointment, Pochettino at last proves, that as a football chairman rather than a land management expert, he does after have half a clue as to what he is doing, or whether he has got it spectacularly wrong yet again.
Frank
Frank, can't really say as I am blown away with the Liverpool signings (though if they add Falcao, that will be noteworthy). Have Arsenal really improved? OK, City and Chelsea were up there and continue to spend as if the FFPR dont matter and as if their money does not matter. Can't do too much about that. United can rebuild and will only have one game a week, so they prbably are best positioned to bed players in and take a run at the title. But how will the new players do? How will Van Gaal do? There are still lots of question marks there. How will :Pochettno, Martinez and Rodgers manage their squads in Europe and in the League? Both Everton and Liverpool have some age issues at the back end. I think it will be a highly competitive season and there will be at least one team that needs CL revenues going forward to pay out what they are paying for player. If we were to sneak in, it would be two. None of ManU, Arsenal and Liverpool can afford to finish outside of the top 4. COYS
peterballb
Peterb at this stage of the new Pochettino era I see United Liverpool and ourselves battling it out for the fourth, fifth and sixth spots. anything above 6th i will see as an impressive first season, 6th I will call adequate and accept it as part of the rebuilding process but currently City, Chelsea and the gooners are beyond our capabilities. If we can limited the points losses to these teams it will a major boost to our league aspirations!
Slurms McKenzie
Win home and away against the bottom 10 teams and we'd need another 5 wins to secure CL. Any points taken away from City, Arsenal or Liverpool and we are ahead of last season and they are worse off. All sorts of ways to get the job one. COYS
peterballb
So have we signed Dier yet?
Slurms McKenzie
Slurms, of course LVG believes his own hype, that's what outstanding success buys you, all outstandingly successful people are arrogant, and rightly so. I daresay that Alex Ferguson, Jose Mourinho, Pepe Guadiola, Carlo Ancellotti, all no doubt believe or believed in their own hype to an extent, that's your right when you are a legend, one of the best. It is the same in any sport, when you are the best, your are entitled to tell everyone. Your trophy cabinet identifies how good you are. The problem arises when people think they are good, or the best, tell everyone, and fail.
Frank
Peterbalb we can't even do that, if you check over the last few seasons you will find that we have lost at least once to a team relegated. Last bloody season we lost 3 times to the might of West Ham United.
Frank

BigSpursFan
LVG with his cameras. media man isn't he. something about him I cannot warm to but he is a winner. will he be the next best thing in the PL or will he flop.
BigSpursFan
Tarkan Agreed and if we finish 6th with some very good cup runs and possibly a trophy I'd call that a very decent first season for Pochettino, but I can't help look at Liverpool and see them as vulnerable, I think United's squad is so depleted that even with their silly money spending spree they haven't sorted out their back line and have lost nearly all of their experience from there so I think we may be able to over haul both of them into fourth! And arsenal have perfected being just good enough to scrape fourth that Wenger has to slip up soon!
Slurms McKenzie
Didn't we dodge a bullet with Willian in the end? what a waste of money!
Slurms McKenzie
Yes, by all accounts Pochettino is a great guy and his players love playing for him. I'd go on further, but there is nothing more. That's all to be written. Just out of curiosity, what would people on here consider to be a failure? COYS
peterballb
Peterballb, relegation will be failure!, bottom half of the table will be unstatisfactory, 10th-7th will be less then adequate, 6th will be acceptable above that will be overachieving. A trophy will change some of those ratings especially if its the Europa League (or whatever its trading as now) and champions league qualification.
Slurms McKenzie
Now I'm off to enjoy the bank holiday weekend and hope to be on here discussing another two new signings in the coming days! Probably will chip in with a few thoughts on the Celtic game, looks like I'll be stuck in front of a grainy internet stream again:-(
Slurms McKenzie
Sounds like a good signing. I feel sorry for Eric Dier though, being branded the "new John Terry" isn't something I'd wish on my worst enemies. Expect all the Spurs players to buy chastity belts for the missus.
Crissybwoy
If things keep going the way they are Ox should really buy the broadcasting rights to the Lego movie theme song and play it on loop on every thread!! I already have it playing inside my head on continuous loop!!!

christian atsu on loan to everton from the chavs?its almost done.wow
tarkan mardinCOYS
For all you old farts on here that haven't heard of colour TV and don't approve of young people and their new fangled machines:

Everything is awesome
Everything is cool when you're part of a team
Everything is awesome, when we're living our dream

Everything is better when we stick together
Side by side, you and I gonna win forever, let's party forever
We're the same, I'm like you, you're like me, we're all working in harmony
Slurms McKenzie
tarkan, so?
Crissybwoy
wow everton have signed a player on Loan, guess they blew their budget signing their team from last season!
Slurms McKenzie
Have an awesome weekend peeps! I'm going to go for it, a cheeky little 3-0 Spurs :-)
Slurms McKenzie
so the toffemen will have lukaku, atsu and finally fit arouna kone(who i rated at wigan).getting past everton wont be an easy task
tarkan mardinCOYS
I disagree tarkan none of them are defenders, stopping Everton scoring might be more difficult though!
Slurms McKenzie
and we will have a fully fit Lamela, a firing Soldado and a rejuvenated Lennon as well as the cool Eriksen, getting past us won't be easy.
Kong
Again Kong I don't see any of them fitting well into our back lilne!
Slurms McKenzie
They might do well in defence if we gave them a try, Lennon would be a good right back.
Kong
theyve got one of the best central defensive partnership in the epl in jagielka and distan and the young stones as reserve.
tarkan mardinCOYS
Talking rubbish Tarkan, they weren't in europe last season, we were and STILL finished above them.
Crissybwoy
fack me they actually have a decent outfit
tarkan mardinCOYS
Alright, just below them, too many shandy's.
Crissybwoy
mourinho the sheithead trying to do what he tried last season in sending guys on loan to everton so that they get points off the competitors.
tarkan mardinCOYS
for those who havnt seen christian atsu before trust me he is a brilliant talent.
tarkan mardinCOYS
Slurms, the only thing that rubs me up the wrong way re LVG, is that gang of prats At Man Utd sacked Moyes at the worst possible time, (they should have given him another season), and we would have probably got LVG. We nearly copped for a Bentley, acknowledged quality, and settled for a BMW, decent motor, but dodgy on ice, hopefully we get a warm winter.
Frank
i say we go for the cups.what cups?any cups.give poch a free hit with the promise of good football.but he needs to target the cups.
tarkan mardinCOYS
We should aim for winning the europa tarkan, play the youngsters in the group stages and then introduce more first-teamers as the competition goes on. We've more chance (imo) of qualifying for the Champs League that way than finishing top-four.
Crissybwoy
chrissyboy-its getting more and more competitive getting in through league positioning.thats not to say we are not capable but i hope poch does not throw away the cups so readily like he did with shampton
tarkan mardinCOYS
He's not 'one for the future', more the very near future.
Airwave
Agreed tarkan, I'm not too bothered about league positions this season, just one cup win will make me happy. It's good to dream!
Crissybwoy
Hi Coops and others. Many thanks for answering my questions re homegrown and Musacchio. latest reports seem like he was unlucky (or maybe lucky) not to be included in Spains world cup squad. Established Laliga CB at Villareal. problem with many owners tho. Dier is not yet 21, is he a free pick, or is that just for homegrown youngsters? on a side note, this is the best thread i have read for a long time, as comments have stayed football, and not gotten personal. what would a thread be without the obligatory ENIC OUT from He who shall not be named, lol. any news on the team for this weekend. COYS
10iscoach
10iscoach, he'd have trouble getting called-up by Spain as he's Argentinian.
Crissybwoy
that settles that, thx Crissy
10iscoach
lol - looks like Lisbon aren't happy with Spurs or Dier's dad. Just as well, I didn't want him loaned back there anyway !!!
muttley
I glossed over the article too quickly, my bad. the fact that that he IS argentinian makes me wonder all the more if Poch is a factor in the link. Poch is very well respected by the current Argentinian players, so this could have legs. could this be the player we have been looking for as a permanent solution to partner Verts? comination of Kaboul, Daws(for reasons stated earlier), Dier and Fryers as cover and for cups.
10iscoach
So Everton have signed Barry and Lukaku permanently and have added Atsu to replace Deulofeu. Failing to see where they are better, or better equipped to deal with another game a week or any younger. Essentially, same squad, a year older, with more games to play. They did not really have injury issues last season, whereas we did, so I really don't see them as a sticking point. Hopefully they will take ponts off of Liverpool, Arsenal and United and we beat them home and away. COYS
peterballb
Crissybwoy, I do not agree with that assessment of how to treat Europa. AVB got that right last season. Play to get through as quickly as possible (assuming we qualify) and then play the kids and those who need playing time. We have a large squad, and so long as injuries do not bite us in the butt as they did last season, we should be able to rotate competent teams in and out. Get the job done early so that players can be rested and ready for the heavy Christmas PL schedule. And, if you don'tcare about League position, go all guns in the three cups. That could guarantee us Europa and get us in with a shout at CL. Doesn't matter the how. Just the result. COYS
peterballb
I am fairly happy with what we have done on the younger end of the squad and development squad. Davies and Dier could be solid players over the next decade and Yahaya and Lazar are both very highly regarded youngsters already playing with the big boys in Spain and Romania. This is how you resolve the home grown rule within an affordable framework. COYS
peterballb
peter when I said "play the kids" I was talking about Dier, Ceballos, Carroll, Fryers etc whilst rotating the first teamers to allow game-time for those not starting in the league games. Otherwise where are people like Fryers going to get the games to learn, europa group teams are generally poor (as we're seeded 1st), so no need to play any of Vertonghen, Lloris and anyone else we deem as vital first team players. If we can't get out the group with a sprinkling of youth with some older heads then I'd be very surprised. I think AVB got it WRONG last season on a grand scale, most of our defeats came after mid-week europa games, if he'd been a bit more intelligent he wouldn't have loaned out ALL the kids meaning he had to play our first teamers in sheite games like Tromso, and we suffered big-time because of these poor decisions!
Crissybwoy
Carroll and Ceballos named in Spurs XI squad that faces Dagenham & Redbridge tomorrow. Strong indication they are not in the first team plans.
Kong
Not necessarily Kong, you can only use so many players in a one game friendly, why take a squad of 30 players when ten of them won't get a game.
Crissybwoy
Got to make way for the returning players as well. There's a lot that Poch has only seen in training this past week
MAN ON!
No Crissybwoy, not one of those, IMO, is ready. Caroll is on the cusp, but reports are he is going out on loan. Ceballos looks well behind Falque. As things stand, Vorm, Naughton or Fredericks, Dawson or Kaboul, Chiriches, Rose or Davies, Sandro or Capoue, Dembele or Paulinho or Bentaleb, Lamela or Lennon, Erikssen or Holtby, Chadli or Townsend, Kane or Soldado or Adebayor. As you can see, other than Lloris and Vertonghen, there are players fighting for positions. If one is in on Sunday, the other needs to be in on Thursday. That still will not guarantee all players playing time. Playing the kids will yield the same results as it did for Hary. A loss against teams we should be smoking and then having to play our best players in late November and early December to try to squeeze in (which didn't always work). That same thing is why Harry got bounced from domestic cups early too. Play the best XI you can given the surrounding fixtures, player fitness, players that need game time and tactics and then, if you are through in first with two games to go, you play whatever kids you can. Now, none of that precludes starting one kid and having a couple on the bench (as Fergie did with Fryers). But if the plan is to throw Dier, Fredericks, Veljkovic, Mason, Carroll, Kane all out there together, the result if fairly predictable. We get to go home and will have a squad of 25 players and U-21's, most of whom will not play at all because there will only be one game a week. If you are not going to take the cups seriously, you should not be managing at Spurs. COYS
peterballb
peterballb-never miss a trick to mention old avb i see.the standard of the early europa is garbage.it is tantamount to conference standard.i say play worms and only the deveopment squad.if they cant finish 1st or 2nd they shouldnt have a future at thfc
tarkan mardinCOYS
So scanning through the vast majority of posts here, most feel we will get top 6 at tops! Have accepted the Arse and the Chelsea will do us again, that United will come back to take us out. From mid table to top 6 in 15 seasons, a decade and a half, without a FA Cup or a European final reached, only 1 CL experience on the back of a relegation rescue mission. No protest, just total acceptance of our lot, as also rans, total acceptance that we are an inferior football club to the Arse and CFC. Let's leave success for the big clubs the mantra is on here. I refuse to accept this, will protest until we have our Tottenham back!!! On yer tax free yacht to the Bahamas, Loser Levy... And you know what you can do with AIA logo... JOE LEWIS OUT!!!
Pele10
I think you've taken my idea to the extreme peter, my suggestion was 'a few' of the kids, I don't think a team of:- Vorm, Fryers, Dier, Dawson, Walker, Dembele, Carroll, Paulinho, Chadli, Kane, Ceballos (for example) would struggle against many teams in the group stages, but we'd obviously put out a stronger line-up against the second seed in our group. What is the point of having games to blood youth if they just watch from the bench, or worse still not get games. If not in the europa group stages then loan ALL our kids out as it's pointless having them around.
Crissybwoy
Can you here the LOSER LEVY fan club members sing???
Pele10
pele-dont know about top 6,theirs everton to consider now.personally i see man utd, city, liverpool, chavs and arsenal top5.than a gap and a straight fight between us and the toffemen
tarkan mardinCOYS
BigSpursFan,
I agree he came across very well.
MrFrancis
i get what you are saying chrissyboy.avb got it so wrong playing strongest possible sides v nobodies.
tarkan mardinCOYS
Crissybwoy, what is the point of having 30 Senior players if you are going to never play 12 and blood kids instead while getting turfed from all of the cups. It's just like when Harry would not use any of Gio, Kranjcar, Pav, Bentley et al, would play them all out of position itha bunch of kids to complete the XI and then all would wonder where it all went wrong.

Sure it is tarkan mardinCOYS, which is why we got turfed a few years back in the group stages. If it is not taken seriously, the results (or similar lack thereof) normally follows. Take a look at the current squad list, and try to get them allplaying time once a week. Have they changed the rules to pre-season rules where we can swith out all players at the half? 14, at most will play, on any given game day. COYS
peterballb
It is but a 1B payment away. Go ahead, make their day. COYS
peterballb
i have faith in the development squad.asking them to get through to the next round of the europa is far more beneficial than any poxy loan to a division 1 team
tarkan mardinCOYS
How did AVB play strongest possible sides? He played the squad players who needed game time interspersed with players who were fit and enjoying a run of games. We have a large squad. You have to use it. COYS
peterballb
There's a difference between then and now though peter, young players need guidance and to know their role in the team, "just ******** run-around a bit" isn't the way to learn and improve. With guidance our younger players could do well, theres's a structure in place now, something missing from 'Arry's days. The more established players will get games, if we have 3 good cup runs then there's plenty of games to go around.
Crissybwoy
Pele10.. Just 3 questions if I may: How many years was it before Man City and Chelsea won the league title before their recent successes? Has their recent success coincided with an enormous injection of funds? Should a mad amount of money be the be all and end all of a clubs historic achievements? It's only a handful of clubs worldwide that can boast a history as good as ours. We're not the best right now but, history doesn't stop today... History is in the making and who knows what tomorrow may bring for THFC? Spurs are not in the same category as City and Chelsea at this minute but, we're closer than most. Let's enjoy what we've already had but not write off the near future so readily. History is ongoing so, be prepared for success, not failure.
MAN ON!
we keep hearing how it is beneficial to league when you are out of europe.this way for a half a season the players will be out of europe.
tarkan mardinCOYS
I don't really get your point pele10. One thing though, red was on our FIRST EVER KIT, you clearly know little of our tradition.
Crissybwoy
Surprise, surprise, Sporting Lisbon are upset by the way Eric Dier's father, who doubles as his agent, and THFC, for the way his transfer was conducted. Can I suggest they join the queue of clubs disgruntled, and upset, after dealing with Levy and his cohorts, and who attempt to avoid repeat business in the future. I wouldn't be at all surprised to see Southampton reluctantly agree to Schneiderlin's exit from the club, as long as he joins Arsenal, rather than Spurs, shades of the deal resulting in Pochettino leaving them for Spurs. I am afraid Daniel bless him, rarely endears himself to anybody, he is not the most popular of souls.
Frank
frank-it does seem their was a bit of naughty business going on.
tarkan mardinCOYS
Agreed tarkan, my point exactly. Europe for us should "start" in February. AVB lost his job over playing too strong a team in europe (amongst other things). Leave the big guns at home when we travel to Israel, Belarus or wherever. 10 points in generally enough to qualify, win our home games and draw one away game minimum, job done!
Crissybwoy
Sounds a great plan. Have a dozen senior players *****ed off that they are not playing at all and have the kids play in Europa and the cups so that swe have one game a week as soon as possible. I have a better suggestion. Just throw the qualifying. That way we don't all waste the time and that way the players can start complaining in September because they are sick of sitting on their duff. It'll make for a great season. We do not have a small squad. We have lots of players that need time on the pitch. COYS
peterballb
peterballb-i dont think the senior players will be upset.they more likely would be jumping for joy.they believe because of their egos they should be playing in the champions league
tarkan mardinCOYS
"A few" of the kids peter, please read what is written and not what you assume is meant. If Fryers and Carroll go on loan then Rose and Mason can replace them, if still at the club. The way you see it, none of our kids will get a game ever. Sounds a great plan, to quote yourself.
Crissybwoy
Steady rotation is what is required, in all competitions. If poch can't keep the squad happy then we have too many players.
Crissybwoy
Crissybwoy, I am not arguing that there is not a benefit of kids playing in the system. I'm all for it. If we can pare our side down to 22 senior (over 21) players supplemented by a few u-21's and some development players, it seems a great strategy. But we don't have that. We have Friedel, Vorm, Lloris, Naughton, Fredericks, Walker, Dawson, Kaboul, Chiriches, Vertonghen, Davies, Rose, Sandro, Capoue, Dembele, Paulinho, Mason, Carroll, Holtby, Erikssen, Lennon, Lamela, Townsend, Chadli, Soldado and Adebayor, without counting Bentaleb, Fryers, Kane and now Dier. That's 30 players to have in game shape. To bring in more like Veljkovic, Ceballos et al just moves the numbers higher. There are only so many games that we will be in, even if we win all of the cups and have replays. Players need to be playing. Practice is not enough. COYS
peterballb
obika and coulibaly can see off the group stage of the europa.
tarkan mardinCOYS
tarkan mardinCOYS, so you believe we have no chance at CL,but the players will be jumping for joy not being bothered by the cups and not playing because only 14 of 30 can play, but that if it was CL they'd play. No, they al want to play. Their international careers depend on it. If they are not playing, they will not be selected for their country. That actually matters to a lot of players not from England. COYS
peterballb
Your first paragraph was the point I was trying to make peter and I agree with the smaller squad, I should have mentioned that. A few of those in your list I expect to be gone by Sept 1st so hopefully having the 22 registered players (plus youth to bulk up the squad) would be ideal. I don't think Friedel will play any games next season, Naughton looks to be maybe going (Dier can apparently also play RB and DM), same with Daws (possibly). Still think we'll sell one of Sandro, Paulinho, Dembele or Holtby. Chadli needs to prove his worth or for me he's out in January, if not sooner.
Crissybwoy
Tarkan mardinCOYS, Harry could not have said it better. We'll agree to disagree. COYS
peterballb
Anyway I'm outta here, laters.
Crissybwoy
It won't be all of them but, I'm certain that we will have a good few players from our first team that would prefer to be working out at home during the week, rather than be travelling to the outer reaches of eastern Europe on a stormy and cold December night to play an amateur 11 chosen from the local fire brigade and Police dept, knowing they have to play City away on Sunday!
MAN ON!
Seems to be taking a long time to confirm Dier has passed is medical, whats the hold up.

I am starting to think Morgan may end up at Arsenal, Giroud apparently trying to convince him to go there.

Interesting to see what happens as I for one didn't see Rose signing new contract, or know of this Dier and although I knew of Davies and Vorm that happened unexpectedly.

The media give lots of false reports, may be we are dealing with other targets that are unknown to us.
BigSpursFan
BSF: He's lost in the dimension that exists somewhere between fantasy and WHL. Baldini is there with him so we may be alright.

It makes me nervous when someone only supposed to have to pass a medical which shouldn't take all day and we still don't hear anything
BigSpursFan
BigSpursFan.. I don't think he's even arrived in London yet. I'm not sure. I'm surprised it's been announced officially before it's been completed.
MAN ON!
There is never anything straight forward about Spurs transfer deals BigSpursFan, others go in, agree a fee, medical done, player signed all in a week, we should get used to being wound up, told all sorts of bollox, and then gradually let down, only for the player to go elsewhere, it has happened many times over the years. Willian last summer was only the latest example, there have been several before.
Frank
Davies did play straight away In the USA after being confirmed and that was good PR as much as anything else. May be they are waiting for maximum publicity tomorrow, in Helsinki....

MAN ON! that is the point of getting the busines done early. That way, when you have a game in Tromso in December that does not matter in the least you can leave players behind. This was done last season. Had we not had all of the new faces and injuries, it would have been even more the case. COYS
peterballb
Must say I'm glad Danny Rose is staying, has a lot of passion and will improve under MP. We have good back up with Davis, have a feeling at least one more defender will come in and hopefully a striker, a proper one, you know 20+ PL GOALS COYFSS!!!!

peterballb. I'm stuck between you Tarkan and chrissyboy on the EL debate. I see valid points from both sides of the fence. All I know is that I want us to compete to win in every match and in every comp...... Rotation is never as easy for a coach as it may seem.
MAN ON!
Good night and Hod bless all.............

Frank - totally agree with your last two posts regarding transfers. i fully expect MS to go to arsenal. remember Levy trying to be smart with leaving Bale deal till last min only to look a fool because Wenger had already done the Ozil deal on the Quiet. I wont be surprised if they bid for MS while Levy plays his games. We never do anything straight forward.
topspur53
As for the Europe debate, you have to remember a lot of the players actually think more of the competition than some of us fans. Mix of youth and first team imo
topspur53
If champions league qualification is the holy grail then we are far, far more likely to achieve this via the Europa cup than we are via the premier league. There is only 7 meaningful games in the Europa at best, qtrs, semis, final and possibly two other games throughout the tournament, the rest are gimmes. Compare that to the premier league we lose to a bottom three team every year we realistically have 7 gimmes during the season and the other 31 are a real test.

For this reason we should approach the EL with our best 11 every game, even when we have qualified so they are used to playing in this tyoe of competition. The EPL should be used to build MoPo's philosophy where results (baring London derbys) don't matter as much as the transition and quality of the football. We've been doing it the other way round for years and as Einstien says expecting anything other than a trophyless season and 5th place finish would be madness.. Plus winning the Europa Cup mean medals, I prefer medals over 4th place stickers.
T.H.F.Chris
topspur5, I don' think that is correct re: Ozil. I understand we wanted him but he had no intention of coming. Bale got done when they stumped the money. Bale going in was always going to signal Ozil leaving. It just wa never going to be to us. COYS
peterballb
MAN ON! which is why I think this year will be very interesting. Balancing PL and Europe is not the same as other leagues. The physicality of ther PL can eat teams alive. I don't think Van Gaal will have an easy time of it. Further, none of Rodgers, Martinez o Pochettino have had to balance the different competitions. In and of iself, that should prove interesting. COYS
peterballb
Yesterday, the Spanish press covered Spursí reported interest in Villareal defender Mateo Musacchio. This was followed, as usual, by the ITKs before it was picked up by the British media, including Goal.com. surely there is a way of getting dier as a homegrown...he may not have been at a club but he has been under the English FA representing them at u18-u21 (ie 3 years) and for 1 year in the prem by the time his b day come round....

Mateo Musacchio looks quality if the 19 million euro transfer has any legs.

Anyone else think fees are getting ridiculous? Yes, if true, seems a competent, young CB. COYS
peterballb
Levy was trying to be smart and failed, pete. he enquired about Ozil and was told he was not for sale supposedly. He hung the deal out, but wenger got his man anyway. if he tries similar with MS i think we will lose out to le'arse again. Our scatter gun approach last year did not seem very well thought out, as Frank said
topspur53
i totally agree that fees are getting way out of hand, but so are players wages.19mil for a CB seems OTT and i will be surprised if Levy would sanction it, although it makes more sense spending it on a CB than another midfielder provided we keep Vert
topspur53
topspur53, it's peter. We did not fail with Ozil. He absolutely did not want to come. We would not pay the salary and we did not have CL. He was for sale the second the Bale deal was done. We knew it, Madrid knew it and Arsenal, the only other interested party, knew it. As for Schneiderlin, if it's to pay above the odds, we will not do it. If it's 27M, Arsenal can have him. IMO, we got the better man in Eriksen while Arsenal got Ozil. First season goes to Eriksen and he was poor for half a season. He is also 3 years younger and likely on half the wages. COYS
peterballb
AS I understand it, it's 19M Euros. Still a fair amount, all things considered but half of what Shaw cost United. He's either coming to pair with Vertonghen or Vertonghen is off and he is to replace him. I suspect if Vertonghen is off, it will be for a fair farthing. COYS
peterballb
Again .. as i mentioned on another thread.. Levy is a sharp business guy..., who will build the stadium on time...., and can spot a loophole in a contract before others can.. Sporting Lisbon have themselves to blame, for not locking down E Dier's contract.. So their complaints are self inflicted... COYS .. and Levy In In in.... lol
Block D Spurs
What side does Musacchio play right or left CB
BigSpursFan
From video looks like right footed right sided. If he comes then he will partner Vertonghen and either Dawson, Kaboul or Vlad are going.
BigSpursFan
Peterbalb - Agree totally, the fees (this summer especially) seem to have gone through the roof - Suarez, Rodriguez, Luiz, Shaw etc. It looks almost impossible to get a decent priced good quality player anymore. I mean, £27M for MS?! Absolutely no way. The worst though I think has got to be the £11M Fulham stumped up for Ross Mccormack... They got well and truly mugged off.
rahn DMC
This tells us some inside story about this defender, is he right for the PL, like the article says, not strong in the air like Vlad. This is why Vlad needs to go, right sided player to be first choice with Vertonghen would leave us weak in the air, he cannot play with Vertonghen and as Vertonghen will be first choice left side Vlad will never be first choice right side.

http://tottenhamhotspur.blogspot.co.uk/2014/08/musacchio-1198m-bid-complicated-by.html
BigSpursFan
rahn - agree. I think Utd have been mugged with Shaw. Apparently Shaw said LVG moaned about his lack of fitness. I know he is young and has a bright future ahead but its different playing for Utd than Southampton, will he step up, maybe but the amount they paid I think was excessive, a bit like us with Soldado and lamela although they were both proven in other countries they were not in the PL.
BigSpursFan
BSF - Yeah agree they paid too much for Shaw as well. He's obviously got potential but £30M+ for a 19 year old LB?... It was the case as well that because he's English another £10M gets added to the price. I think we over paid for Soldado and Lamela but I think they're both clever footballers and both really struggled to settle last season - They'll come good. I think they'll have much better seasons this time around, I'm really excited to see Lamela get proper game time!
rahn DMC
fees are governed by the market there are a couple of clubs that can afford anything someone asks and then there are the rest. Fees are not cast in stone they are negotiable...as we saw with Ade sometimes you can pay much less than the last fee they went for and sometimes if you want to prize away a player like Bale you have to pay through the nose....trouble is when clubs are prepared to use TV money, ticket money and other revenue they earn to buy players we just can't compete...then of course there is timing, bring the money to bear when others aren't (for whatever reason)
shedboy2
musacchio looks a similar player to Vlad....he's about the same size (perhaps a tad shorter) a little slower but strong....a good ball playing CB...will he be dominant enough in the air? will he take to the prem? I don't know...would have to trust the scouts that they now the mans character....and who is he to replace Daws? Vlad? Kaboul?

Happy with the Young British chap signing. Worth the risk IMO. BUT....another link to a Defender..at greater cost, REally ! Prefer to be seeing spurs linked to a Top Goalscorer, before the season starts. V' Chiriches......still can be a asset ( assuming he is fit ).....could be utilised in a 3,5,2 system on occaisions........that I believe spurs could adapt to with our Very good fullbacks / Wingbacks. Will be assessing our goalthreat Vs Celtic.....Confidence comes from goals.....

Frank writes, "I am afraid Daniel bless him, rarely endears himself to anybody, he is not the most popular of souls." Very true! The guy has an awful reputation in the football business, not only as an on the pitch failure, with his worst trophy per season percentage of any THFC chairman since world war two, but also in the manner on which he conducts himself on a business level. The guy is disliked by many football chairman who have had dealings with him! On the playing side of things, Jol, Santini, Ramos, AVB, Harry etc etc, have all publicly stated what a nightmare it was working with the man, and of course it won't be long before Poch takes the ENIC dagger too! Sometimes, winners in sport are nasty pieces of work, are arrogant and ruthless, their only concern being winning silverware at all costs, but at Tottenham with Daniel Levy, it is very different, because we have ourselves an arrogant, ruthless, backstabbing, penny pinching LOSER running the show... ENIC OUT!!!
Pele10
Pele10...agree with you on the Spurs home shirt...too much red issue. BUT...not so much on the Mr.Levy Vendetta. BUT...if that shiny brand new stadium is not ready for use by / for season 2017/18....then I will be singing / shouting ....the same tune, as you. Till then....enjoy the trip.

I think I read somewhere yesterday that no player won more ball in the defensive 1/3rd last season than Musacchio. Of course, questions relating to his aerial ability, but he certainly reads the game well and snuffs out danger along the ground. Couple of big defensive lapses last season, but the likes of Utd, Liverpool and Barcelona have all cast a beady eye. Like the fact that he is Argentinian, working both ways to help both himself and Lamela to feel comfortable around the place.

Sure he plays RCB, and is comfortable on the ball, the Argentine's are usually known for their tough tackling, so I'm kind of hoping that the hustle and bustle of the Prem would not pose a problem. If he can continue the form he showed last season at the Yellow Submarine, then for me, this signing has to be considered yet another quality acquisition. Add to the fact that he is only 23, and it appears we have started to make some very good moves this window. MS and J-Rod would be the icing on the cake for me.

Some may argue that once more this would again represent too many new signings, but let's consider, MS and J-Rod know Poch's set up and style, Davies and Vorm now how the Prem is for quickness of play and aggression, Dier will be nurtured into contention with a manager who is said to be good with youth integration and Masiccho, well, we'll have to see, but let's not forget, the only real mainstay in the CB role last season was Dawson, a player many deem not good enough for starting berth, so again, does his signing really present a problem?. Happy Days!.

82spursdebut, And what if Levy continues his appalling on the pitch failings until the start of the 2017/18, season. Has won nothing and has failed to qualify for the CL? Will a new stadium (which Joe Lewis will cash in on) compensate for 17 seasons of on the pitch failure???

on musaccio is a decent player from the times ive seen him.is he worth in excess of 15 million is a big call imo.thats a lot of money
tarkan mardinCOYS
I'm sure he will be answerable to a few. My guess....is that his main focus, will be to consolidate THFC as a top 6 club. A bit of luck here and there..and we might do better in the 3 cup competitions..and prem'. PLus....we might get a very lucky substantial offer/s for our players....that could be utilised to improve the balance of the squad. Plus....we might get lucky and progress a youngster or two...and turn them into a world star. All part of the trip.........do you do the Lottery ?

ENIC and their staff have not ever featured in our starting 11, Levy is not a miracle worker and I'll not write us off for the near future... I'm not unhappy with our owners or chairman. I think they're doing a grand job. Winning a trophy or two would be nice but it's not something you can guarantee by change of ownership. My support for Spurs encompasses it's entire history as a club and not just the past few seasons. I will continue my support, with or without a trophy and meanwhile some nice football to keep me going would be rather good.
MAN ON!
MAN ON! Did you not see my "see you in Turin posts" before the LOSER Levy offloaded AVB and brought in his Tim when we were still in the Europa? I am always open for LOSER Levy to prove me wrong. I will be the first to say congratulations if Levy wins his first major competition (League Cup not included, because it is a B team crap competition)... Levy is the only one who can actually prove me wrong, because until he wins himself another trophy he will continue to have a worst trophy per season percentage than his mentor SUGAR... Imagine if we were told 15 seasons back that Levy was going to have a worst trophy per season percentage than Sir Scum. No one would have possible believed that one would could be possible... Well Sugars apprentice has gone and done it!!!
Pele10
I see a transfer link outwards.....i.e.....Swansea interested in Naughton. I' value Naughton...in the £10 to £12mill' Bracket...before I would consider selling him. We do have Fredericks.....who I feel ...could become a great asset.
82spursdebut
It seems Certain posters on here always ignore the facts of THFC financial position... during the Irving Scholars years, .. we were on the brink of going bankrupt . Sugar saved us..ENIC have consolidated and improved the infrastructure / value of the club, increased the squad players value, and our league position to top 6.. when we were mid table regulars for years... check the records every year since 1970 (relegation is in there).... While Levy is not be a sweetie pie chairman, he is a tough man to deal with, and there is always people complaining, when they are out smarted in business dealings. Levy has got many a transfer deal for the benefit of THFC.

Over £150m sales for Bale Modric Berba Carrick when buying them for about £25m... So who would we have have.. running the club.. A chairman who spends all the money, wins a few bits of silverware.. then goes bust.. (Leeds. Pompey etc.) Or one that builds up the club to be in top 13 richest clubs in Europe, and one that is getting bigger, with International Exposure , hence more fans, around the world.. adding more value to the club in Merchandise etc. which helps to make the club able to afford a new £400m stadium, better players...better sliverware.. CL for example... Yes this also benefits ENIC.. but also benefits us.. the fans, now and for years to follow.... COYS

MAN ON! You have just stated that you will continue your support with or without a trophy, which is the same with all Spurs fans. You cant change what's in your blood. But let me tell you this, Joe Lewis is not Spurs, he is a football mercenary now at it his 6th pro club, and in my opinion we will never have the back the glory days until the man has cashed in and moved on, or pushed out (like Sugar) and the AEK Athens who had massive protests which forced Lewis out. The truth! I'm Spurs til I die, but ENIC ain't Spurs... We will have OUR Tottenham back!!!

Pele-your very negative, what you put out you get, the saying what you sow you reap. football is a business now and of course levy buys to sell to make a profit, if he didn't we would go bust. Why should he sell the club, its his business or Enic. If you had a business would you want people to tell you to sell it. I just cannot understand why people think they have a right to tell someone that they should sell their business. just because it is football, thats why. Football is no longer just a sport its business the problem with fans like yourself if you don't seem to be able to distinguish that fact from emotional fluffy idea of what football is now days. why should Levy or any one else invest money in a business its non of our business what they do really. If we don't like the business go elsewhere. Stop romantising about football, its a business and you are free to decide whether you support the business or not. Its actually no different to whether you support your local take away. If you don't like the way the local takeaway is run, if it doesn't have enough investment for your liking, not enough stock, you go elsewhere. You don't go in and tell them to invest more money. Too many fans on here let their emotional fantasy they feel as a 'FAN' get in the way.

Ken - totally agree. This site is not what it used to be. Its fine to have opinions and thoughts about how players and mangers are performing as well as how Levy is as well but this site is often spoilt by people who are so negative. Its so naive to think they have the right to DEMAND, I say if you don't like the business which is what football is go elsewhere. It gets worse when people then start falling out. Oh well people reap what they sow.

Pele10
Dier done and dusted at long last, better late than never. It now seems that we are genuinely interested in Mateo Musacchio from Villarreal as the ideal partner fpr jan Vertonghen, not to replace him. It is suggested that if this deal was to be done, together with t, he will cost circa £17M, and if it comes off the whole thing seems the ideal scenario. We get rid of a couple of sub standard CBs and get in some quality.
Frank
BigSpursFan. I agree with your sentiments but, passion and high spirits can get the better of people, including myself, sometimes... A lot of people do come across as being negative by coming on here just to complain about other posters opinions being a downer but, without contributing anything positive to the debate themselves.

I hope Spurs buy Mateo Musacchio from Villarreal,he looks mustard.

Mateo Musacchio from Villarreal & a very young Eric Dier would be 2 very shrewd signings IMO.
I hope Cheriches stays because i think there`s more from him to come.If we want to juggle 60 games in one season, then we will need everyone chipping in.

If we sign these 2 dier & Mussachio, then we should then go all out for a centre forward.

If Adebayor can commit himself more,Soldado do what we all know what he can do more,Kane great backup & one more striker of high quality then that`s a good strikeforce.I just really hope Adebayor gets his head on the game, because he`s clearly a really good player when he wants to be.

If we are in for the Villarreal defender then we are starting to get overloaded in defense so I expect someone or two be sold.

Not sure how true all this is and are we really looking to splash 17m this summer, not sure we are. Look at our signings to date, 3 and 4 mil.
BigSpursFan
It's gonna be interesting to see how many changes are made throughout the match today. I think we could do with a more balanced team, from start to finish.
MAN ON!
Not sure Naughton will go for 12 I would expect 8m may be 9 tops
BigSpursFan
Problem is MAN ON Wc players haven't featured or up to speed so can't see a balanced team being done today, only three absentees are likely to start, one WC player then Sandro and Ade that leaves six WC players still not featured. I think we need another game, we are short of pre season games imo due to the lengthy time WC players were absent. I haven't seen Paulinho training or Vertonghen, if these WC players don't feature today for some length of time they have one more game to get up to speed not enough imo. However, Poch will know what's best and maybe they will play behind closed doors or maybe a late pre season game will be added, thats happened before.
BigSpursFan
yeah but paulinho is really tired,he needs a longer rest
tarkan mardinCOYS
BigSpursFan. That's true. Probably does then make sense to arrange another friendly before we kick off the season. A lot of work still to be done but I think the USA trip was a good one and the players seem to be quite happy and confident with the new set-up. I wonder if we'll see Dier today.
MAN ON!
BigSpurFan, of course you are absolutely right in what you say, modern football is a business, rather than the sport it once was, and yes we have to accept that and move forward. What I would say in defense of the views that Pele10 adopts, I think it is indisputable that compared to others of similar wealth and financial capability, Joe Lewis does not invest in "on the pitch success " compared to them. Building a new training facility, and planning the building of a new stadium is all very well, to enhance the value of the business and enhance it's sales value, but on the pitch success would be nice in the mean time. Of course we can't tell messrs Lewis/Levy how to spend their money, but it would be nice, given the exorbitant cost of watching Spurs compared to other top clubs, if Lewis would at least attempt to compete. Unfortunately we will have to live with things as they are, they are not going to change, at least not while ENIC/Lewis/Levy retain ownership of the club. They are not fans, not football people, they are simply hard nosed business men.
Frank
Brilliant post Frank...
Pele10
Apologies re my posting regarding the Dier deal being done, and the possibility of the deal for Mateo Musacchio, who is seen as an immediate first team option. What I had typed, but because my bloody lap top is playing silly buggers, is that this should allow us to out Dawson ( if he agrees to go), and Chiriches (wanted by Roma) as surplus to requirements. This would leave us with Vertonghen/Kaboul or Musacchio as the first team options with Dier and our Swiss guy, and possibly Fryers or Hall as back up, and always remembering that Capoue can play CB in an emergency. This would be an ideal solution, we would be rid of two substandard CBs, we could recoup most of the out lay on Chiriches, get a few bob for Dawson, and hopefully plug the gaping hole through our defense that caused so many embarrassing defeats, shipping goals by the shed load last season.
Frank
not similar wealths......bloody oil, spoils so much !!

A typically underhanded piece of work by LoSEr Levy to exploit a weakness in contract and get Dier cheap. LEVY OUT, cos i need him to do my taxes and save me money, just like he does Spurs. I wanna build a tennis court at my house, he's the man to get me there soon i feel. LOL

Frank-I think your still missing my point I was making. Its non of our business how someone runs their business but more importantly we have a CHOICE whether we support that business. So how can it be 'indisputable'. For us who are more positive and practice gratitude we see our glass half full and not half empty and we are grateful for what investment the owners have made and done, whether they profit or not. We are a top six PL side. It is so easy to compare, when we compare we have conflict in our minds, always wanting more, always wanting better, always non accepting of 'what is' and therefore there is conflict, instead of acceptance, humility and gratitude.

Unless the world stops this greed, this lack of gratitude, and continues to concentrate on the negative, the greed then life will always be full of conflict in our minds and then within the world we live in.

We have the FREEDOM to choose what we support, and saying they are hard nose businessman again is negative. We have absolutely no idea what kind of people they are, we are projecting onto them. What we do know is that they brought a business and its entirely up to them how they run it, again it comes back to fans getting confused bringing in their own beliefs and conditioning into what they think is right and wrong, its all projection. Yet most people don't want to be dictated to in their own lives, yet want to dictate to owners of a business.

Its the false sense of identity as a fan. I love chinese food but I don't go telling chinese restaurants to invest more money. This is all because its football, and people think they have a right to dictate. The only right we have is to decide whether we want to support this footballing business by paying the prices they charge for their tickets and merchandise. Just like its our choice whether we support any other business when buying their products, whether it is a service industry or product industry.

Still its only my opinion. I am a fan of many many years, I love football, I would like to compete and win things but I will not sell my soul doing so in my own life, I don't expect other to have to do so either.
BigSpursFan
I mean look at the language on here. 'Loser Levy' is this really necessary, I know I live my life trying to be the best person I can be, I don't want to use such language, Lev y like us is a human being with feelings, family and children.

Not sure if Dier has travelled. I wonder why this is played in Finland? I would have liked us to play a bigger team before Pl kick of. Man Utd playing Real Madrid, thats preparation. I know America trips is also about publicity but I do think we ought to try and get a least one big pre season friendly to test us a bit more.

BigSpursFan, please don't presume to tell me and those that think like me what to think, and try to deny me to say what I want, when I want and how I want about the style of ownership of ENIC/Lewis?Levy compared to other very rich club owners in the PL. I live in the UK, a democracy not in Nth Korea, I will exercise my right to say what I want. I have supported this club for 60+ years so long before ENIC came on the scene and God willing I will still be supporting Spurs after ENIC have ridden away over the horizon towing their wagon full of money. In the meantime I will carry on commenting how, when, and if I see fit, and I won't be asking anybody's permission. Incidentally you choose whether or not to continue to support your football club, it is in your DNA, in your blood, there is no option, you just carry on until the grim reaper comes calling, there just is no option. Realism is often negative, excess optomism is just fantasy, and your hopes can come crashing down, mine won't.
Frank
Correction.....you don't choose whether or not to support your football club etc. etc.
Frank
I`ve heard it all now, someone says "loser levy" & someone gets on their high horse about it preaching about what a great person they are.
Get a grip already & it`s no wonder football stadiums are so quiet, fans don`t know when to stand up,when to sit down, what they can sing, what they can`t."She fell over" is one of the latest ones to be banned.
What is banter & what is not?Because everybody has got so confused & scared to say the wrong thing it`s becoming extinct
I remember the days you could fart as loud as you wanted in football stadiums & nobody would hear it,some poor sod singing with his mouth open wide wouldn`t appreciate too much though. But now even the silent ones sound like earthquakes,it`s a shame & all because a minority like to moan about everything & go around like their $hit don`t stink.
Embarrassing itself England is big time.
Fanny adams
Frank-I am not telling you what to say, funny how posters on here as soon as someone disagrees with their line of thoughts feel 'attacked' and then twist things, I was merely saying no of us have any right to tell the owners of Tottenham what to spend their money on or how to run it. Sorry you feel the way you do, but I cannot help what goes on in your mind. My conscience is clear, I tell no one what to say, think or do.

As for supporting a club being in your DNA absolutely rubbish, this is the problem, people are deluded, they are living in a dream world, they have no idea what is 'REAL' and what is not, how they are conditioned, how they buy into beliefs. Still each to their own, if you believe its in your DNA then thats your belief. I personally don't live in such a dream, illusions but I love and support this club, I make no excuses and give my power away and say such things like 'I have no choice', if you feel that way, then so be it.

I do find your comments funny, laughing here as I read them.

Any way non of it ultimately matters.
BigSpursFan
Forgot, sure you can say and try and dictate how someone else runs their business but I am pretty sure Levy and the owners don't find you, I and anyone else on this site that important. This site represents a very few supporters, we are not important, in the scheme of things. people like Levy get to where they are because they are business people and they are not affected by a small minority of over emotional, critical people.
BigSpursFan
BSF ... I tend to agree with Frank about the DNA thing ... but Iíd explain it differently. Supporters usually make an emotional connection to a club when they are quite young. For most supporters this emotional connection rarely changes and is only severed when God comes calling (maybe it even continues after that), but the reality is that supporters rarely transfer their connection from one club to another. So, in a sense, and for good or bad, the club does become part of our DNA, figuratively speaking. (Sorry Frank if I got that wrong).
Geofspurs
Geofspurs-I guess we all have our own way of seeing things, what you say is nicely put. To a degree I understand what your saying, I have supported spurs nearly 50 years but I also stand by what I said, its too complicated to go into, but its the mentality that people have when they identify themselves with something and believe that don't have a choice and then go on to behave in a way that imo is not reasonable. This is how wars are started. I guess I try to see the whole picture. I think Frank took my comments to personal, I wasn't trying to tell him what to think, believe, say or not say, I was merely saying imo my reality that how Levy and the owners run their business is their business, and I don't feel myself that I have any right to tell them how to do it, or even to tell them to sell. I see it so many times, people are emotionally charged, just as they are in wars, believing in their own delusions. I mean people on here become so negative and they call Levy etc and each other because they are identifying with something that is outside of themselves, its not real. People do it all the time, they identify with their culture, religion, etc and they kill for it. I see the same on here. What I see is no better than people at war. People are so identified with the club that they build up beliefs as to what is right and wrong and when things don't match their beliefs they attack, hence the hate often shown on here towards Levy and the owners, the negativity, the dictatorship, telling Levy to sell, do this do that, if he doesn't he is a loser and much more.

I could never go and support another team, I get that, but I also get that this identification which you address as being in our DNA is a false sense of self and it destroys any sense of common decency towards others especially the owners.

It is a business that Enic and Levy own and whilst yes it would be lovely if they did things differently I accept that its 'their' business is both accounts, and its non of my business. This means I support the club as a fan but I don't identify with it to the extent that I become negative and cruel towards the owners or other fans.

I wasn't saying Frank was either I was merely trying to point out 'can we really tell someone how to run their business' is it right to be negative and abusive towards fellow human beings. Like I said, we reap what we sow imo. I hope Frank hasn't taken it personally because no intention, but if he has then what can one do, we all have opinions, I have no ill feeling towards anyone having their own opinions, I feel no need to attack anyone. I try to give opinions as to how things are going, players and managers performing but I see no milage in sowing negativity or buying into this belief that we don't have a choice as to how we behave, or what we say.

This site has changed a lot lately, too much negativity for me, just as football as changed, become a business. As much as I love the game and love Tottenham, its so sad the way it has gone and the way it brings the worse out in some people. I admit it also brings people together, when it does its lovely, but like everywhere in life, there are some minds that are just not happy unless they are being negative. Still I remain a fan and take responsibility to what I say and do. Love and peace to all, including Frank.

BSF ... Iím impressed; you put a lot into that comment (and Iím not being patronising). Your effort deserves a response. I agree that supporters do not have the right (or the ability) to tell clubs what to do. Clubs have a structure, a philosophy, and a business plan, and if supporters are not happy with this then they can choose to stop supporting. This is a difficult thing to do as we tend to hold on firmly to things that shaped and influenced us from a young age. This is probably where the confusing ĎDNAí aspect (symbolically) comes into it; some things become part of our Ďemotional and psychological DNAí and are difficult to remove (I think Iíve just invented a new terminology!), but ĎDNAí is not, of course, used in a physical sense. The argument by some on here seems to be that they pay to watch their team and this gives them some kind of ownership. Not true. Sometimes consumers can influence how a product is managed ... but, consumers, just like football fans, donít always agree and you canít please everyone. Big-business understands this and can therefore ignore what many consumers demand. Iíve always been a huge Dylan fan but I donít tell him what to sing. I enjoy Al Pacino, Hillary S*****, and Robert De Nero movies but I donít tell them what scripts to accept. I enjoy reading certain authors but I donít dictate what they write. Iíve paid to see concerts, but I donít own the performers, etc. Itís my choice to enjoy the experience or not. They are what they are and they either suit us or they donít.

A huge factor influencing the way people think is age; younger supporters (people) tend to want everything to change immediately to match their Ďidealí. They donít have the knowledge and patience that time and experience will give them. Canít do much about that.

I started going to WHL in 1960. There are many things I dislike about the money-driven game that it has become ... but whenever 11 players in a Spurs shirt take to the pitch I will enjoy watching them, win, lose or draw. I always will, no matter what THFC chooses to do or how they do it.

As for human nature and war; the planet is much smaller now and unless religion (the most prolific killer throughout history) is seen as no longer relevant, or the Vatican elects a black, Jewish, gay, female, Pope ... human nature will make world peace impossible. Canít do much about that either.
