Brad Friedel

Brad Friedel deserves his place in footballing history, having signed a one-year deal with us, this would mean to be the oldest player to play in the Premier league, Brad needs to make one appearance on or after November 2nd during this season 2014-15, that could be as sub or starting, Brad's date of birth is May 18 1971, reaching 43 this year.

The record currently stands at at 43 years, 4 months and 26 days held by John Burridge. His senior career started in 1994 - 95 USSF apps 0; 1994 Newcastle loan 0 apps; 1995 Bronby on loan 10 apps; 1995 - 1996 Galatasary 30 apps; 1996 - 1997 Columbus Crew 38 apps; 1997 - 2000 Liverpool 25 apps; 2000 - 2008 Blackburn Rovers making 287 apps and he even scored. On February 21, 2004, in an away game against Charlton Athletic, Friedel scored a goal from open play in the 90th minute, from a corner kick. Friedel's goal equalized the game at 2-2, but seconds later Charlton scored again through Claus Jensen and went on to win the match 3-2.

He became the second goalkeeper in Premier League history (excluding own goals) to score after Peter Schmeichel for Aston Villa in 2001. He then joined Aston Villa in 2008-until-2011 making 114 apps; In 2011 Brad joined us and has been with us ever since, Brad has made 82 apps for the USA Team.

Tottenham confirmed on their website: 'Brad Friedel has put pen to paper on a new one-year contract with the club, which will also see him become a club ambassador with a particular focus on our work in his native United States. 'Our goalkeeper's ambassadorial role will have a wide-ranging remit that will include greater involvement in our global coaching programme and engaging with our 30 supporters clubs from across North America as we continue to increase our global presence and bring our international fan base closer to the club.

I don't know Brad on a personal note, but he is a fine upstanding gentleman when interviewed or on TV as a pundit during the world cup, for all that is good about this club and Brad Friedel give him that honour. spu 4 life.

If breaking a record was a priority for either the club or the player it would have been totally wrong for all concerned. IMO he'll only be called for early rounds of the LC or the EL ... Otherwise on the bench or on the USA and selling our club to the US public.

Lot of time for the professionalism Brad has displayed since joining the prem, not just us....however, he needs to play for as long as possible as a series of bad investments mean that financially, he was broke a few years ago!!!

Not saying he should be allowed to use our club for that, I don't think he is...it's a deal that works out well for both parties, we have a model prob, what I assume will be a good coach, and a great ambassador for the U.S......his on field decisions have always been very good, off field however, questionable!

Spu 4 life beekeeping is actually hard work. Lifting supers full of honey requires specialised gym training and years of practice. Try it sometime but beware making bees angry (e.g. by saying things about them) can provoke a sting back lol

Brad Friedel is, or should be, a role model to all young sportsmen or women. His longevity, and his record regarding consequetive appearances, go to show what you can achieve if you look after yourself, and work at fitness, and diet etc. and don't dwell on minor knocks etc. that put many players out for a week or two. He is a pro footballer of the old school, he gets paid to play, so when selected he just plays. The fact that he can maintain his standard of fitness, to be able to be full time professional GKer at his age, is amazing. As far as his GKing is concerned, his technique does not really suit our current high line defensive system, Hugo Lloris who is is an extremely mobile, and very quick GKer/sweeper, which better suits this role. Brad on the other hand is a keeper that mostly stays on his line, and relies on Physical size, anticipation, and reflexes to perform his shot stopping role. Having said all of that, I am absolutely certain that the club should ensure that Brad makes the appropriate 1 appearance he needs, to break John Burridge's record, this is the least they can do, even if it is only as an 85th minute sub in a game that is being comfortably won. I think in his new role Brad can be a very good ambassador for the club, particularly in his native USA, his background, character, and personality, will ensure his success. Yes the club possibly were remiss some 3 years ago regarding getting in a younger keeper in, firstly in the first team, and then as a competitor to or back up for Hugo Lloris, a truly world class keeper, after his arrival, but this wasn't Brad's fault. The back up role has now been sorted with the arrival of Vorm, but Brad will still probably need to be registered as 3rd keeper, after Archer's loan.

One more season as a pro then move to full time ambassadorial role in the USA for THFC. Hope he get's another few minutes on the ptich to set the new record too. He is our 3rd GK this season as Archer is now out on loan..

Top man, and we shouldn't forget he lost his money trying to do the right thing by young kids in the US. He was unlucky or made bad calls but his intentions were absolutely honourable. Agree with HGS, that isn't our problem but he clearly can play a role as our number 3 keeper. If Lloris and Worm both stay fully fit he shouldn't play. If one gets injured then he should step in.

Exactly Muttley but he will take up a valuable squad number in the 25, which would not have been the case with Archer who I believe was a free pick.

At 43 you would have thought the FA would give him a wild card and not have to be listed in the squad. That said you can get a 50% reduction on the TV Licence fee if you’re blind/severely sight impaired. Your licence will also cover anyone who lives with you. Q. Do they have to be blind as well, what a joke.

Frank - Archer is a free pick but has been put out on loan this last week. A strange one actually as I recall it was a Div 2 side and he wasn't guaranteed a starting berth. I understand if Poch wants Archer out on loan and it's Brad that's sitting around twiddling his thumbs as injury backup. What will be funny though is if Brad plays as an over age in the U21's. I think we're allowed 3 but I see a logic to reduce this to 2 if Brad is playing :-)

Muttley I think Archer is only 20 and his first team football chances are severly limited a the club. He has gone to League two but to challenge for the No one spot so he has to prove his worth and earn his spot. Makes sense at this stage and playing behind a weak defense will mean more work for him as well!!

Space on the roster really? We get 25 players. That's 2 per position, a third keeper and 2 utility players 21 years or older. Younger players do not count. I'm sure we can fit him in. Having three keepers count against the 25 is not uncommon.

As for the record, it cannot be a token appearance. That is appropriate when it is a Make a Wish event but not one for the record books. He needs to be the keeper for the game. Anything else is, IMO, disrespectful to the record books. He is either able to play, or he is not. COYS
