'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Tottenham Hotspur vs. Schalke.

As the making money and friends tour is completed, it's Poch and his boys that will make their anticipated home debuts this afternoon.

In terms of new faces, we haven't seen anything too drastic, but there is a realistic feel good factor, over the way we seem to be looking to play, with the emphasis on the team, as opposed to individuals.

It would seem that several of our World Cup players will either be missing or only playing a minor part today and that actually sounds good to me, as Poch doesn't seem to be influenced by names or reputations and seems happy to show faith in players that have so far performed well in the four other pre season games.

That may well also apply to the Shalke team, who the likes of Draxler, Howedes, Huntelaar and our former 'legend' Prince Boateng are all WC participants, but who might not be deemed ready to face Spurs.

Shalke, were the the best of the rest in Germany, as they finished third behind Bayern and Dortmond, so we should expect a tough game, which is just what we need to test our players, especially after last weekends pathetic showing from Celtic...

play the guys who will start v the hammers
tarkan mardinCOYS
i expect paulinho, jan and dembele to feature
tarkan mardinCOYS
Agreed, play 'the' team for this one.
Tottenham Hotcore
3 articles in half an hour Ox, freeing up the rest of your day? Need to start focusing on the West Ham game and who and how we will play against them. Can't stomach the thought of losing to that lot again!
spurticus87
dont know what to expect from schalke tbh.they got smashed at home v newcastle 3-1.
tarkan mardinCOYS
Ideally, Play what you think is your first 11 ( if you know it !!?)....3-0 up at half time....bring on the 2nd string players. Perfect preparation plan.....we'll see.
82spursdebut
If Shalke field a team anything like they did against Wet Spam then I think even our reserves could have fun with them. It would be nice to see strong lineups from both sides so we can get a view of what to expect for our opening PL game. I mean I know it will be 3 points for Spurs but I'd like to know how many goals I can expect to see :)
RyanHotSpur
If MP knows his first XI (and I have my doubts) then he should play them at some point today. Preferably at the start of the game. I'd like to see both the Brazilians play at some point as well as this new guy Dier who I know little about. The other two new guys from Swansea are class acts and can be relied upon for a decent performance. Vorm on for the second half would be a bonus. Finally - give Lamella the whole 90.
CarryOnSpurs
Anyone hear anything on the supposed midweek behind closed doors match? Surely with all these club insiders we should know if there was a game, who played, who we played and what was the score?
Slurms McKenzie
What time is kick off?
Slurms McKenzie
3pm KO
CarryOnSpurs
Spurs to win 3-0!!
Geofspurs
According to our tickets Kick Off is 5.30pm COYS FOYT
Godspur'e
Kick off is at 530 I think with live coverage on ITV4 from 515 BST.
Highgatespur
5.30pm kick off. Poch will still mix it up and give players a chance. He has selected a formation and style of play and then will fit the right players into that for the right matches. Today will be fun.
Windlespur
Keep Capoue protecting that space in front of back four, get Dembele playing where mason has been and let Lennon, Lamela and Eriksen create in front of them. No spot in that set up for the average Paulinho in my opinion.
Windlespur
Holtby should also be knocking òn door should Lamela or Lennon not turn up.
Windlespur
Sorry for off-topic, but was intrigued by this:

http://www1.skysports.com/football/news/11688/9413670/transfer-news-heurelho-gomes-lifts-the-lid-on-tottenham-frustration

One quote in that which stood out for me was...

“When Tottenham signed Lloris, Andre Villas-Boas told me he had not asked to sign him......"
Critical_Spur
I hope we see both teams strong their respective managers idea of a first XI. Be the perfect test for us in terms of stepping up into the next season. a 3-1 Spurs with a Lamela goal and assist would do a nice time out.
ThundaJay
I really hope that Eric Dier plays and will show some on here who say, he is one for future, that he is certainly good enough. He is older than Everton's John Stones who had a very good season and got called up by Woy, is 6ft 2 and has had a very good footballing education playing in Portugal and at every England level u21 and below. He may reassure some of you and is same age as Caulker when he made debut for us. Good enough, so old enough. play him and he will get better and better - lets face it, won't be any worse than what we saw last year and talk in Portugal is we have got ourselves a real talent...
Windlespur
Critical, what Gomez doesn't say is that he refused to move for a pay cut, so was happy to sit till end of contract. good riddance to a clown.
Windlespur
I agree Windlespur - I just wish the ex players just keep quiet - they got their money !!!
Highgatespur
Critical spur, I do not think that Quote means anything. I.e..I remember the Van der Vaart / Harry Quote...i.e...Mr.Levy phoned Harry and said...we can sign VDV...for X amount. Harry..said cor ! yeah he is world class....love to work with him on board. Thus, I doubt very very much that AVB said...Don't sign Lloris.
82spursdebut
Windlespur, Highgate, he also goes on to say that QPR wanted him but 6 million was too much! I am not defending Gomes, but tbf, he should've been allowed tol eave just to cut our losses and save on payroll. We continued paying his wages for what?...so that Levy could play his bean counter role? Shame to see someone's prime being screwed up by a Club. But hey ho, yeah, we'll all need move on from that episode as long as lessons are learnt. COYS!
Critical_Spur
Shame about Gomes' consistency. He was quality in snippets.
RyanHotSpur
Loved Gomes...but just wobbled too much in the highest demands.
82spursdebut
Critical - who's being the bean counter (an insulting term for a successful man IMO) Gomes refused to drop his salary demands with new club - screwed his own career IMO. He's left so why bother talking about the club ? He got his money didn't he ? Hardly destitute ... COTMS
Highgatespur
I don't like Gomes talking in the press. What I recall is that there were teams in for him. I recall Harry, as with Pav, not wanting to let him go as we'd be short. I also recall that it was an issue of valuation. What I do not recall is him complaining about wages. We hold on to players we don't want for far too long. Once Friedel had come in, Gomes was not going to play for Harry. I thought AVB would give him a chance, but he was clearly unconvinced as well. As for Lloris, reports after AVB left suggested he did not want Lloris. That does not necessarily mean he did not want him just that he wanted another player. Moutinho, Leandro, Willian etc. AVB just had the decency to keep such things internal. I presume Gomes said wtf, I thought I was back-up and he was told, you were. Not my call. They have bought LLoris. Gomes should be professional enough to just get on with it. COYS
peterballb
Why not 6 Geof :) COYS!
a.k.a.james1spurs
With hindsight Highgate, yes, incorrect reference to our chairman. As much as I have voiced my views on the excellent work ENIC have done over their tenure, sometimes the man does tend to drag things out for the sake of 'for a few dollars more'. I, nonetheless, sympathise with Gomes for his career being stalled once he was ostracised at Spurs.
Critical_Spur
PeterB, you keep presenting AVB as some God from Mount Olympus who would have made us into CL winners if only the real world had not got in the way. He demonstrated at Chelsea that he could not be successful even with the higher calibre of players there. At Spurs he demonstrated that he could not succeed with a group of lesser players. You keep attacking Harry for his signings policy but when he made statements like "there is no one better out there than we have already" whet he was saying was that there was no one that Levy would be prepared to pay for that was any better. AVB is similar in my view to van Gaal who reminds everyone how successful he has been at top clubs which is relatively easy if you have half a brain and some of the world's best players. Whilst Poch wasn't my first choice I am hopeful that he will show how to create success from an average bunch of players that we currently have. If he does that he will qualify as an excellent manager, especially compared to AVB.
Harry-Kari
Peter, how are you mate? I have to agree with Harry-Kari though. The only thing AVB proved was that he had limited man management skills. For all his faults Harry got us 2 top 4 positions. I'm hopeful for Poch but feel in another 18 months we will have another new manager and no further forward!!
RAF Yid
Careful lads, Peter has all the stats to show that getting failing at two PL clubs in two years is actually a sign of greatness.
Love totty
AVB had the highest win percentage of any of the modern managers.
RAF Yid
I’ll be surprised if the team that plays today is the same one to face WHU next week. I think MP is still working it out (couldn’t do it myself) and he has another week and several training sessions before the season starts. It will be a work in progress for some time unless MP is a miracle worker ... by the end of the season we should know if he’s truly the messiah, or just a very naughty boy!
Geofspurs
James ... Well I suppose there could be three in each half!
Geofspurs
Harry-Kari what do you mean by average bunch of players? Average in ability or performance last season? Considering the turmoil at Spurs ( if it was Liverpool or Man Utd we wouldn't hear the end of it in the press) we did well to get top six. COYS!
a.k.a.james1spurs
Critical - gotta agree with you regarding the man's negotiation skills there. But Gomes could've taken a pay cut if he was so eager to leave ... Anyway...
Highgatespur
James - totally agree ....

I'll double check...
MAN ON!
So what RAF? The EL was largely the reason for that. We won nothing and lost the fans at the Lane and in our armchairs with the most boring brand of football I've ever had the misfortune to sit through while watching Spurs. I will however never forget my unadulterated joy at OT when we won there in his first season when hopes were high.
Love totty
No Dembele or Paulinho eh?
Love totty
Dawson picked up an injury against Celtic, Tarkan.
Love totty
To suggest that AVB failed at Chelsea and Spurs is silly. What yardstick do you use for his failure? Do you use the Abramovic yardstick that sacked Ancelotti and Mourinho for winning the league and Di Matteo for winning the CL or do you use the Levy yardstick of loyalty personified, just don't ask the umpteen managers he's sacked. If AVB is such a failure why is he one of the highest paid coaches in the world coaching a CL team? Yes he wasn't faultless, yes he made mistakes but to not let him finish the season taking into account the amount of players coming in with no pre-season was pathetic from Levy.
ItalianYiddo
Where is Capoue ?
Thats Entertainment
italian-avb was crap.it took a complete novice in tim sherwood to show him up.
tarkan mardinCOYS
World cup players, been training at Lodge, 10 players following different programme, said on official site.

Who the hell are AVB and Sherwood anyway!? Please don't mention any one called Harry, unless it's Kane.
MAN ON!
My Goatee informs me that we will win this one by 4-1. He's never wrong!

So no Worm, Walker, Dawson, Vertonghen, Chiriches, Ekotto, Capoue, Dembele, Paulinho and Chadli one week before the season starts. Only at Spurs !!!
muttley
this is i a bizzare line up with so many ommissions.
tarkan mardinCOYS
Yeah, well my goldfish is saying 3-2, has been wrong in the past though!
Thats Entertainment
Love Totty, I would take Harry over AVB all day long. I was suggesting the stats are favourable for AVB. To me, our failing is not keeping a manager for a long period. Too quick to change!!
RAF Yid
Interesting to see how we cope without Capoue. Looking forward to seeing Dier.
Harry-Kari
They've all been sold mutely!
MAN ON!
What's ridiculous Tarkan, Dawson's rubbish!?? I think it's genius... Hopefully he'll be gone next week! Good chance for Dier and Kaboom to stake a claim to start next week. Dawson shouldn't be near the first team.
LuvWhites
Muttley, who is Worm?
MAN ON!
Muttely... Why is not having BAE so strange?? He won't be in 25man squad this year!
LuvWhites
what is the schalke team?
tarkan mardinCOYS
Man On - Michael Worm.

LuvWhites - I'm not in denial either about the "extras" Spurs continually stockpile. Ekotto is still a WC player and we're paying his wages so I expect us to either use him or sell him.
muttley
Who's gonna be first with the words: "well played Rose" and "great goal Andros?" I'm just gonna slag 'em all off myself. No favouritism from me today...
MAN ON!
Sorry to pick you up mutely but it's Michel Vorm...
MAN ON!
Harry-Kari, his remit at Chelsea was to bring along the younger players as it was obvious that the older players were holding things up. He did what he was asked, and the owner decided to allow the players ton be the boss. Same thing happened at Spurs where Adebayor, and what he wants, is more important than the team. You win nothing when there are players that are better than the others and don't have to work like the others. Look at AVB's win percentage as a manager. He's not a god, but with all of his "failure" he stacks up there. Also is one of the very few to ever win the treble. Oh, I know, everyone is doing it. The press and fans never wanted him, neither at Chelsea, nor at Spurs. Whatever. Harry and his one cup and 40% win percentage is all that. Ramos 45% win percentage and as many titles in England as Harry has, AVB and his 60% win percentage and his treble know nothing. Pochettino and his 35% win percentage is better than them all. Chelsea fans had no time for Benitez either. The fans and the press know what they like. It often has absolutely nothing to do with quality. It's like arguing with people who make their own wine and beer without any real ability, know how, or quality ingredients. Whatever.

Pochettino is our coach. That's who we have. Others are in the past where they belong, rightly, or wrongly. They will all, in time, be judged for what they did, or didn't do. Exciting football that ships three points every week and sees us not able to compete in cups gets really old really quick. In the end, you play to the style and quality of players you have. It's why teams park the bus. They are doing what they have to do to keep the cash cow that is the PL. Sometimes, winning ugly is the only way you will do it because others just have a higher level of quality. This is not rhythmic gymnastics. There are no style points, no matter what the press and the fans state. It's about points in the table. No matter. One week to sort out this year's squad and then qualify for the group stages. COYS
peterballb
Sorry spellcheck muttely.

Good reception for MP....
MAN ON!
Enjoy the win everyone..... Lamela to score at least one.
MAN ON!
Yes, finally Holtby, Eriksen and Lamela on the pitch at the same time! Holtby hopefully as a cm. Good to see Dier get his depute! Our midfield and attack are close to what we will see against Wetspam, I reckon.
Jables
And one more thing, the desire from the press to get AVB could not be more evident in the articles we saw in the last two days about Gomes and Limassol. One was made to question his competency for what he considers a decent keeper (highly doubt AVB would disregard the France Number 1 and captain - just may have wanted another) and the post-match Limassol comments were somehow turned in to advice for Spurs and that the man doesn't know how to break down teams that park the bus. Neither article reflected any level of fairness whatsoever. Limassol had not even been drawn against Spurs at the time, so how it could have been advice at all, and any comments AVB would have made to Gomes about Lloris would have been two years back and his record clearly shows he rated Lloris above both Friedel and Gomes. Honestly, it's just jab, jab, jab. Get some more in because you know he will take the high road. 60% win percentage and the treble is the only answer he will ever need. COYS
peterballb
RAF great to see you back as well. Hope all is well with you. Hopefully we'll do a better job of hooking up next time I am in the UK. COYS

peterballb
Up the Spurs!
MAN ON!
Hmm.. no Draxler. Let the transfer rumours start. He played like 0 minutes in the WC so that cannot be the excuse.
Jables
Peter, u are wasting your breath mate. Some people never wanted AVB from the start, sniped at him for his entire tenure despite us winning more games than we ever have and then delighted at him leaving. Completely unfair and most of it media driven but thats life. Hopefully Poch will get the time and support from owners, fans and media alike to build something. Its a difficult job whoever is manager - the least we can do is back the man in charge over a reasonable time frame.
StillRickyVilla
Good start by Dier
ro6ertj
Odd Naughton and Kaboul start one as cap no less, unless is as a last ditch attempt to have them in the shop window. Great to see Dier starting. Happy for Lennon that was offside if not had he hit the post wouldnt be help to change some fans perceptions.
ThundaJay
Is this White Hart Lane? Their making noise!
Jables
Excellent athmosphere!
Jables
well defended, pack defence
ro6ertj
Peter, I'm in for that. Gomes, very bitter, perhaps if he was as good as he makes out, someone from the German League or Prem would take a chance. AVB was hounded at Chelsea by the older players, I'm not sure that was the case at Spurs. It's okay in Portugal to be the Daddy, but he needs more skills here. Man management poor, I wouldn't like to manage Ade but I would have insisted that he went before taking job.
RAF Yid
Great ball through by Eriksen. Team looking like a .... Team !
ro6ertj
Oh yes .... well thought out .... 1-0 Coys
ro6ertj
Good 1st half performance, gonna miss the second half as I have to go to work. Dier looks good! "Danny Rose, excellent defending yet again!" Not my words, the words of Clarke 'oh my days' Carlisle. .. what do you think Highgate??

Lennon and Rose have been excellent. Lennon has been good throughout pre-season. COYS!
a.k.a.james1spurs
Holby is all over the pitch, looking good!
Durbanspur
Nice steady first half. Rose has done well, good to see Lamela running around a bit ! Holtby has played well other than that tackle.

Team looks more assured than last season. Still have alot of players to return also.

Some good movement off the ball also...not standing still and waiting but trying to get to space and attack.

Good header by Kaboul .. Coys

ro6ertj
Solid...
MAN ON!
Good solid 1st half, Holtby & Lennon both looking lively, enjoying the way the TEAM is playing so far. Wonder if we get wholesale changes for 2nd half.
CanUkSpur
Great to see a good crowd at the Lane, can't wait for the first proper game there. I am expecting great things from Lamela, Eriksen still subdued.
ItalianYiddo
First half impressions: Ade took his goal well, otherwise has been rusty. Dier looks like a good CB in the making, apart from two poor passes. Eriksen and Lamela are not getting the ball enough. Lennon looks lively, but should learn the offside rule. Holtby everywhere, maybe too enthusiastic. Bentaleb meh. Kabool, Naughton and Rose doing their job.
Jables
i still have my doubts about erik lamela.once the intensity of the epl kicks in im not sure he would want it
tarkan mardinCOYS
He wants it. He's no pushover.

Pretty solid performance - some players still undercooked. Slightly concerned about the WC contingent and Walker though!
Durbanspur
Unbeaten in pre-season. You know what that means... we're getting relegated!
Jables
IY - didn't agree with appointment at the time - but would agree with you that AVB can't be judged as a failure just face didn't fit .... But it's all history.
Highgatespur
Love Totty how did you figure that the crowd was lost in AVB - the crowd figures remained the same at approx 36,000+, unless you have extra knowledge....
Highgatespur
entwisle-townsend easily.
tarkan mardinCOYS
soldado and lamela still worry me hugely.
tarkan mardinCOYS
Thought it was an effective display - one thing is shining through is that the squad is looking in good shape. One of the best displays from Mr Rose and there didn't seem to be any left wing cover ... Well done the miracle man MRP please Rose continue this and might have to order a whole batch of humble pies! What a display from Dier - looks v similar to verts ... Excellent interview b4 hand and crowd in good voice !!! Come on lads repay the faith and CL qualification this year please. Yellow kit is the best of the three! COTMS
Highgatespur
Peter, there you go again. Bottom line, AVB won as much in the EPL as Tim, Harry, Jol ie: nothing. Did he get CL, no. Highest win percentage only if you include the Europa League. Did we win that? No. Was the football we played good to watch...not without Bale. Was he let down by Levy? Yes but no more than any other manager. Is he a nice man? Probably Is what he achieved or didn't relevant to what is happening now? No. So why does he keep popping up in many of your posts?
Harry-Kari
Thought both Lamela and Townsend were good ... Can't be directly compared as they play a different role I feel. Good to see AT run straight and look up and then shoot on target ! WOW - someone has been busy - well done MRP !!
Highgatespur
How are you doing Highgate? Agreed new era, looking forward to the new season, the newbies were always going to be stronger second season, providing we tighten up at the back we should be alright. Capoue or Sandro must start every game if fit, for some games I would play both. Horses for courses. COYS.
ItalianYiddo
To be fair peterballb is not the only one who mention previous managers ...
Highgatespur
IY I'm doing fine - good to see you back... New era indeed... Most apt to say horses for courses - we've a the squad there sir - very fine. An excellent strategy to give the WC (late ones) more time to gayer their paces. Really liked the look of Dier... Btw no ITK predicted that !!!! pleasantly surprised b both labs and Rose ... Well fond to the boys for a good display !!
Highgatespur
peterballb-for such a stats orientated bloke you never choose to bring up tim sherwoods win ratio.best ever.60 percent
tarkan mardinCOYS
Dier looked calm and assured, Rose done well better than Davies maybe is true what they say, competition focuses the mind.
ItalianYiddo
Regarding today's game I didn't see the high pace passing and slick movement that was shown in flashes on tour and just had the feeling that we were lightweight again. Dier looked as good as any CB we have when on the left, Rose looked better than Davies but I think we missed Capoue who seems to raise the whole tempo of the team and moves the ball forwards quickly whereas Holtby and Bentaleb played too many sideways and backwards passes. Can't really judge on this game but I felt that an EPL team would have walked all over us. Ericksen and Lamela were ineffective. Interestingly, there was no high line which puts more pressure on the Front 6 to be creative and defensive and I don't think that happened today. Improvement needed for next week I think.
Harry-Kari
highgate-how can you say both townsend and lamela were good.jermaine jenas spoke sense to me in his round up.he said lamela needs to show productivity like anton
tarkan mardinCOYS
Sherwoods loss ratio is also the worse of all recent managers, had Llorris not being MOM for most games under him the win ratio would'n have been too good either.
ItalianYiddo
italian-If my auntie...
tarkan mardinCOYS
Poch is unbeaten. That's all they matters to me right now. ;-)
MAN ON!
one thing that worried me whilst watching the game was when both commentators said that southampton tired out in the last 20 minutes of games because of the high intensity training regime.
tarkan mardinCOYS
What position does your auntie play tarkam? Well coached teams don't have their keeper as the star player, keepers should be heard not seen.
ItalianYiddo
i really hope poch is sensible about things
tarkan mardinCOYS
I have said it quite a few times, Southampton lost the most points from winning positions, it's a worry.
ItalianYiddo
I've said the same Tarkan but it was pointed out to me that they had a much smaller and less experienced squad. The team will have to pace themselves. It won't be easy but when is it ever?
MAN ON!
southampton having a small squad is something of a myth.just check out the squad from last season.
tarkan mardinCOYS
tarkan mardinCOYS. I said the same also but was corrected. I didn't check it out myself. We can say that our quality in depth is far superior though.
MAN ON!
Who knows?
MAN ON!
They could all be dropping like flies, come January...
MAN ON!
I don't think they will tire themselves out if they play like today. Maybe Poch is trying a slightly different approach this season. I didn't think the intensity was there today. Maybe saving themselves for the season?
Harry-Kari
Bring in west ham next week, that result is what matters, good run out again and game time for the lads, quite a few players not played today so will be interesting to see the team next week. I would start Townsend, Eriksen and lamela behind either ade or soldado. Attack west ham with pace and skill.
Kong
i still maintain sandro and paulinho are not his type of players and would not be surprised if both were moved on.and than going in for morgan late in the window
tarkan mardinCOYS
I agree it was a good run out. Kaboul was looking quite sharp and Dier looked confident and solid. Nuaghton and Rose looked good but Davies was nervous but, it's early days.
MAN ON!
also not a shoe-in ben davies will be number one ahead of danny rose.
tarkan mardinCOYS
Entwhistle - interesting name - I would start with Lamela next week with Lennon and Eriksen and then bring on AT if needed in the last 25 mins or so...
Highgatespur
If Sandro was placed with Holtby and Lewis continues to play all over the pitch, then I think he could struggle, unless he is fully fighting fit.
MAN ON!
Whoever players good will keeps their spot in the team, good to have competition, players should keep their places on merit.
Kong
Holtby was full of energy but I think his play just needs a bit more discipline. He doesn't need to be everywhere....
MAN ON!
There is talk that QPR want Townsend, not sure how true that it is but I want our transfer to be sorted this week but doubtful.
Kong
Was capoue injured or rested?
Kong
Goog performance without all the chances being taken. Dier looked good, composed and potentially a very good acquisition.. Townsend also impressed.. Lamela I am still unsure of, and I worry about Kane, nice few touches but will he get 12+ goals a season,, good to see Defoe back at the lane, he would get double figures playing Kane's roll. Not sure on people's views of Kaboul, I am starting to go off him as a first choice, even when fit he's no where near the standard of a king, woodgate type player, we certainly need another centre back.
T.H.F.Chris
you watch one of the hammers thugs put in a challenge on lamela first 10 minutes or so,he wont fancy it i fear.thats what sam allardyces talk will be.
tarkan mardinCOYS
I think it's Lamela that still needs easing in. I would play Townsend on tonights performance but fitness and training will also be the deciding factor for who Poch will pick next week.
MAN ON!
I'm confident we will beat the Spam... Good night, I'm off out! Up the Spurs!
MAN ON!
Highgate - I meant that he lost the support of the crowd not the numbers. It'll take more than the manager blaming the crowd to stop them coming to the Lane. Supporters tend to last more than a season and a half. :)
Love totty
Lamela isn't afraid of a challenge, he puts a shift in and goes for it. He will give as good as he gets against west ham. Let west ham worry about us.
Kong
Townsend was poor second half of last season and was coming back from injury so made things harder for him to get his confidence back. Lamela was injured for a long part of last season too so is only just getting a run of games, he will come good.
Kong
Love totty totally agree about he crowd and AVB, those were dark days, never scored more than 3 goals at home in 1 and half seasons, boring 1-0 wins mainly thanks to Bales maginficents. And he fcking moaned about us!!
T.H.F.Chris
Entwistle, I would start with both unless Townsend gets sold.
Kong
Whats all the fuss about Townsend, never in a million years is he going to eclipse Lamela who has vision, Lamela and Ade will be a powerful force this season IMO FOTB.

Does Verts not playing mean he is a possible transfer out??
Big Ron
TE. Couldn't have it said it better about AT; lol
Highgatespur
Every player needs to be given a chance, Rose actually looks like he has improved, has he though is another matter. Will be interesting to see the first 11 next week
Kong
Entwistle did you see the goal ? Lamela's pass was crucial.
Highgatespur
tarkan mrdinCOYS, I have brought up Tim's winning percentage plenty. It's 50%. Yes, I know, you all excuse him for his 1W, 3L 1 D record in the cups. They all count. You will also note how quickly other teams have bothered to take him in. Such a great manager. Probably still no coaching badges, and only half of the players couldn't wait to see the back of him. Awesome. That's what we need. Stick with that. Onward and upward. His winning % is 10 percentage points lower than AVB's and his is a very small sample. 0 trophies last I checked. COYS
peterballb
I also note how you had no issue with Adebayor looking crap in possession on most times, failing to get shots away when set up brilliantly, but Soldado goofs up on one and you are all over him despite his goal and his great passes and link-up play. What does he have, 3 goals and 4 assists in 5 halves of football. COYS
peterballb
Well put peterballb !!
Highgatespur
Went to the game and a typical pre season match which was not that exciting. The plus points for me were - no Dawson, Danny Rose played very well ( and I am not his biggest fan), kaboul and Dier looked a good combination and I really liked Diers positioning, the front four that started worked hard. The negatives and concerns are: Capoue - he was not in squad a week before season despite being excellent in us ( just a niggle hopefully), Bentaleb ( made me nervous when he had the ball, sloppy passes, risky and negative), Harry Kane - his touch was poor and always on the floor and diving was embarrasing. another win, but both teams playing at half pace, so more intensity needed next week.
Windlespur
HGS, what did you think of Dier today, I watched game on TV, but I think you was at the game, I must say I was impressed with him. Things are looking up at last, on a low note see our mate is back, playing the guitar now ffs LOL COYSS FOTB.
Thats Entertainment
Another plus: Townsend looked dangerous when he came on.
Windlespur
Thanks Windlespur ... Looked pretty much like that on the box - although missed the errors of Nabil ... Weird seeing the lane on the box and not being there!!
Highgatespur
A that's entertainment - I was there and Dier looked very good. A couple of sloppy passes, but excellent positioning and never caught out of position. A great and strong cover towards the end of the game. A very solid debut, if, admittedly in a slow paced game. I would play him and give him a chance, especially as there was no Capoue in front of them. Strange that verts and Dembele / Paulinho were not in squad, even for twenty minutes of game time. Carroll also looked far better than Bentaleb when he came on.
Windlespur
TE nah not at the game - made the decision not to attend friendlies few years ago... Tempted for today's though... One of the best decisions made on the 13th May and the appt. of MRP. Thought dier looked do accomplished - thought he has the same stature as verts ... Looking forward to the game ... Missed that - will keep a look out ... I'm sure Ox will be looking out as well. On to next week and the whamboyz - going to that.... Take care mate.
Highgatespur
Highgate - Bentaleb is young and clearly a good prospect. however, for me he displays an element of arrogance which often sees short or misplaced passes, a lack of urgency and he rarely creates breaks or forward moves. he shows up for the ball, but really slows the game down when a focal point in the middle. for me, Mason looked better in this formation, which is clearly ( as seen today and in America) a 4, 2,3,1 formation. Lamela worked hard defending from the front, but didnt happen for him today.
Windlespur
Any news on Capoue - a niggle or on his way somewhere? Hopefully nothing serious as we need him at west ham.
Windlespur
Windlespur, looks like we've made a very good signing re Dier, I think a lot of WC players were deemed not fit enough to play today.
Thats Entertainment
Left hand side was interesting. As in USA, seemed it was Lennon playing on the left and Holtby covered that side well. Lamela played more central and Eriksen right. neither had the same positive impact as they did in us today, but am certain that will be the line up next week. The interesting thing will be the two behind them. Holtby and Bentaleb today, sandro and Carroll came on and in USA, mason and Capoue looked very solid. For me, I would play Capoue and Holtby or Dembele.
Windlespur
KANE = USELESS We need another striker urgently IMO. Doldado may come good but can you imagine when Ade goes to ACN, if Soldado got injured - Wow!
LuvWhites
LuvWhites - I hate to agree with you, but Kane was awful today and in the English PL, it is so often a striker that wins you games. If we had this squad and a Tevez, I would be so much happier. remy, Bony, Benteke are others who I would happily see added to our squad and even loan Kane out to see if he proves us wrong. laying every week may help him, but we should not be relying on him IMO.
Windlespur
The miracle man (Poch) has impressed me. Danny boy Rose is a different player. I also liked Townsend's contribution today. No row Z, one fluffed effort, three great strikes on target. So I think Poch should definitely be our manager against West Ham!....as for the team....I'd be happy with his decision. COYS!
Critical_Spur
The best thing for me is that players are off the treatment table and getting some game time under the belt. Regarding the missing WC players, perhaps Pocho wants to see how hungry the other players are. I hope so. No player should expect to play every game, they should earn it.
vicspur
Who cares about previous managers because by my recollection they were all as bad as one another & for various reasons.

Pochettinno is the man now so what`s happened has happened & no banging the same drum 20 times a day will change that or make ones opion better than another,it`s all academic.

Very impressed with our style of play,& over the moon to have a manager who doesn`t continue to talk complete bollox & have to be the centre of attention all the time.Very refreshing for Spurs to have a manager who goes about his business in a professional manner & does most of his talking by his football results.

My MOM goes to Adebayor because his attitude at times is dreadful, but today it was spot on.I really hope Ponchettino can get the best of Adebayor because he`s clearly a fine player.Adebayor can be one of our main key players next season & i hope today was a start of things to come.IMO Adebayor was great today
Fanny adams
Windlespur- I want Kane to come good , just it's too much pressure if were relying on him ... Any of your mentioned strikers would be great, is ring Ksbe for cups and 2nd halfs this season best I think. I wsnt 3 proven strikers and soldado is already a risk after last season. Remy for Townsend would be great!!!!
LuvWhites
I would prefer we kept Townsend. e looked far more disciplined when he came on today and also dangerous going forward. however, if Remy were to come the other way - would be better. Just wait till after we have played QPR..... For me, Kane is not a top four striker and that must be our benchmark. loan him out this year and lets see, but bring a top striker in instead. Apparently on spurs community, JJEtset the supposed itk's says he doesn't think MM or MS are dead deals yet and some outs...... Who knows, probably not the itk's
Windlespur
you could have pace and be brainless like rose and walker unless they decide to improve ( this is there season now) or you coildbe slower and use your brain to defend, IE Corluka.id keep 1000 for this season hopefully poch can develop, its a different ball game when seasons starts, as pre season is nothing....when it kicks off he will no he will have to deliver, but for me he tries to hard tries to be a hero to much.
123spurs
I agree that Kane will have to do better. Staying on his feet would be a good start. Would like to have seen a bit more of Eriksen, he's still inclined to go missing sometimes but he made some nice through balls. Naughton and Kaboul looked really strong on the right side but Sandro looked very rusty when he came on. Good work out before the main event.
Love totty
I will now call you HumblepieGate! I swear if you had laid into young danny after todays match I would have had you down as a racist and not left you alone on this topic over the season, I would just like to add although DR was good today it was nothing out of the norm from him. COYS bring on the spam! Xx
thfc1989
Fanny .... Got to say that I didn’t see the game and, collectively, the comments did not inspire me too much. But then I read your comments and, knowing how critical you can be, felt more optimistic. Also, you get huge credit for your comments on Ade, knowing how you usually view him. I hope he keeps it going this season. Cheers!
Geofspurs
Maybe we need a competition on here to see who can guess the starting line-up for the WHU game. Anyone who wins that should be elevated to VS legend status!!!
Geofspurs
Most posters seem impressed with Dier. That's a promising start!
Geofspurs
The most relevant and meaningful pre-season game is, unfortunately, only beneficial to two teams each season; the community shield. City and Arsenal will jump slightly ahead of the pack with such a competitive game under their belt ... and it will be competitive.
Geofspurs
Just watched the goals; Soldado’s goal was either very weird, or a great, well-timed header ... I’m going for the former!!
Geofspurs
It's a tight competition at the top of the leaderboard ... but beware of the 'tall poppy' syndrome guys!!
Geofspurs
Watched the game. Have to say disappointed not to see more WC players get a run out. VERY concerned about Walker. The only players I have seen on outer injured list are Dawson, Chiriches and Dembele. I can't see Naughton going anywhere if there is an injury question. (have to say I think Naughton is improving).

Generally speaking 1st half thought back 4 looked solid. Needed Capoue in midfield. Holtby at times I thought his passing was off. (Jmho) Lennon was unlucky to be called offside once when he wasn't. Think that is a plan of MP to have him with his speed run through middle of defence. He's not really playing wide as much. Adebayor looked happy;)!!!!! Played okay given he had Malaria!!!!

think lamela and Eriksen in particular could have played better with through balls on ground from better midfielders behind them . I am not convinced that holtby/Bentaleb combo is the right balance to get that combination of lamela/eriksen/Lennon playing the system we want. I am not saying I don't like holtby or Bentaleb. Just my opinion that Holtby likes to play balls over the top, longer range. These three don't play to the best of their abilities like that. They need ball to feet. I just think Holtby/Bentaleb would be better suited to a different set up.

Spurschick
Okay second half hmmm where to start. I feel a little for fryers as I don't think he was intended to be a CB more so a LB. Once we had Dier, Fryers and Davies at defense, we looked naive and vulnerable. Townsend. Well he may be improving to some, but and it is a. BIG BUT he still needs to learn to pass instead of shoot when there are better options on. To me he is still infuriating. Yes he had a decent shot saved, BUT he had another player more central in the box that had a much easier shot due to the goalie going across goal to Townsend. I know we won, I know it was a friendly BUT in the season it's moments and decisions like that that are the difference between hanging on for a win, and putting the game to bed. We HAVE to improve our goal difference this year. I have a feeling this year 4th could come down to goal difference as I think it will be tight at the top. Second half, I wasn't convinced. But I don't think our starting 11 was the perfect starting 11 either.
Spurschick
Geoff my ideal starting 11 would be

Lloris,

Naughton (I have a feeling Walker is injured) Mussachio (if signed in time;)!!!) Vertonghen, Davies,

capoue, Paulinho,

Chadli, Lamela,Eriksen

Adebayor Who I THINK will start Well rule out any WC players except Lloris ;( as I don't think they are ready.

Lloris

Naughton, Kaboul, Dier, Davies

capoue, Holtby

Lennon, Lamela, Eriksen

Adebayor Just my thoughts as I think Dembele is on injured list, Paulinho and Chadli have not had enough preseason for my liking in the public eye. Not sure Vertonghen will be match ready either. Sandro again probably not fit enough to start. Not entirely convinced Adebayor is fitter than Soldado given recent illness but think he will get the nod as a) a confidence boost, and b) for height reasons.
there again I could be well off the money;)
Spurschick
Spurschick ... I agree with your remarks on the players. Your team looks okay too. Full marks for having a go ... I find it too impossible even to try because I keep wanting to change it! Saturday will be a very interesting day. :-)
Geofspurs
MAN/Slurms .. Can you two stop posting for a while and give longtime and me a chance to catch up ... or I suppose I could just write the first things that come into my head even if they don't make sense ... like you guys do! :-)
Geofspurs
Geoff, thanks for the comments. Do I get bonus points for being the first to name a team;)

I have unfortunately had a load going on to be on here anywhere near as much as I would like. Trying to slowly get caught up!!!! Been trying to keep up with things in general, and luckily now living in the states have been able to see all the games live on tv (today's on spurs tv;)!!!) the only thing I miss is not being able to get to the Lane anymore;( my DH is already dreading the start of the season as he knows it's all I'll talk about from here on in;)

unfortunately I don't think! even in preseason we have seen our starting 11. Every "team" I have seen on the pitch has had its weak points, and some players, whilst I think may be better than others individually, don't quite gel together in the same system. Tweak the system and they thrive, so I am not convinced that we will necessarily see the best 11 players on the pitch at the same time so to speak.

I would like to see. Chadli in front of Davies. I'm not saying Rose isn't improving but with the way Rose goes forward he kind of pushes Chadli narrow. When. Chadli has been allowed to play on the wing I have been impressed with some of his crosses. He is not a typical winger, in the sense he is quite big for a winger, but his body strength impresses me getting past players. He is one player I don't think we have seen the best out of yet, but I feel that's down to being played out of position. I want to see what he can do. Oh and Holtby needs to calm down a bit in his tackling or he will spend a lot of time suspended !!!!!!
Spurschick
Spurschick ... Well, you're the winner ... so far! I'm still Sitting on the fence about quite a few of our players (Chadli, Lamela, Soldado, Paulinho, Dembele, etc). Chadli is a dark horse for me. I sense that he has a lot to offer but hasn’t had enough opportunity to show us yet. Townsend and Rose have great potential but are bad decision makers. I hope MP can coach them to maximise their performance. I think Holtby tries too hard, probably out of desperation to be a first teamer?! Finding the best eleven from our squad is almost like looking for a needle in a haystack at the moment! We’ll have a better idea in a few weeks of how the team is to be set up, and how effective it works. I get to watch all the games on Foxtel in Australia, but the kick off times are a pain. This is the part of the season where every football supporter of every team is full of optimism ... shame the season has to start really!!
Geofspurs
Thanks Geoff;) I hope I am still the winner at the end;)

Half the problem isn't so much the season starting, it's more the transfer window not closing first. For the first few games, there is no guarantee that by the end of the month the players playing together and gelling will still be at the club, or replaced and been benched. I would much rather go into the season with a "here's what we have, what we going to do" approach than have turmoil with uncertain futures.
Spurschick
I agree. It's almost impossible to get stuck into the season properly until the window closes. Hard to find any sense in that really. Hope our level of optimism is still just as high in six months time! :-)
Geofspurs
I think we should be concerned. Walker is out meaning Naughton will start the season which is a disaster that he's still even there let alone starting. Davies is horrendously slow, I actually think Rose should start ahead of him at least he is dynamic. You don't see many of our competitors with full backs of such awful quality. lamela looks lost any time I've seen him against decent opposition. Granted he looks good against tin pot sides like Sheriff and Chicago Fire but against the big boys I can't see the hype. £30million should buy you a ready made world class footballer, I have seen no signs that is the case.Up front Soldado is useless, despite a reactionary goal he has been a laughable signing. Add to that we STILL have no left winger. I mean Levy has yet to make a signing which improves the first 11 and we are 1 week away from West ham. pochettino has been shafted and unless something radical happens in 7 days we have absolutely no hope of finishing above 6th.
jordtheyid
How some people on here are calling for Chadli to start is beyond me. He should be sold immediately.
jordtheyid
jordtheyid.. It's not looking good, is it?
MAN ON!
Biggest worry for me was the poor finishing, we should have had more goals. The same was true of Schalke, other opposition might be more clinical. Dier made a great start, Davies dissapointing, especially with how well Rose played. The fact Holtby played 83 minutes suggests he won't be off on loan this season. Not really sure how our midfield will line up against West Ham, we just have so many options.
jod
Jordan we actually DO have a left winger - he is called CHADLI the point is he's not been played there. Rose is not a great dynamic LB either. He is currently as good a LB as Bale was! Okay he is improving but I guess I need another beer and agree to disagree with your comments.
Spurschick
Sorry auto correct changed your name jord;)
Spurschick
Geoff, I think you are right about Holtby but yesterday showed to me that have players we are relying on to create and score goals who seem too easily pushed off the ball and are not very good at effective pressing either. Eriksen and Lamela in particular seemed weak. Also we do not have an effective goal scorer and therefore we are looking to Eriksen, Lamela, Lennon and Townsend to score plenty. I know Poch's philosophy is that the team as a whole will produce the results but I have my doubts whether we have the components. I believe that Capoue must play as he does free-up the weaker players to create and maybe Holtby then has more time to play forward than yesterday with Bentaleb. It will be interesting to see how the theory translates into practice next week. One thing for sure is that the Hammers will not be taking prisioners!
Harry-Kari
Harry ... It's true that it's an asset to be physically strong to play in the EPL. If you don't have a strong physique you need to be fast, skillfull and intelligent (two out of three might work - Modric was skillfull and intelligent). Given this, I agree that some of our squad could find life difficult. Time will tell.
Geofspurs
Modric is also a strong little cookie... I think it was playing in the PL that toughened him up.
MAN ON!
My observations from yesterday.Ive been one of holtbys biggest critics but he was def motm, thought bentaleb was very good, screened well, incisive, used the ball well, was very noticeable to me when sandro came on that the cm ball retention wasn't as good. His crowd favourite persona clouds a lot of failings that since modric left are all too apparent. Bentaleb Imo is going to be an outstanding player. Lamella and erricksen didn't click. Lamella in particular disappointed after a good pre season and townsends direct play was a big improvement, rather than continually drifting in field to congestion. Rose and naughton were good. Guess what Rose is being coached , is more disciplined & unsurprisingly looks a good player and for me starts day one. Lamela for me is the big conundrum for me. It a big case of absence makes the heart grow fonder. Imo there is minimal evidence to warrant, we can pin our hopes on him to the extent we have. My son was one of the thousands who had a lamela shirt yesterday. I know it was a friendly &im being a bit of a tart but i wanted a bit more reassurance, to see him dictate a bit more, and look threatening. And more importantly to justify me shelling out 55 sheckles.
gatch75
Lamela cannot be fully match fit as yet but I don't think he is as much of a pushover as he seems. I think he has it in him to get stuck in and be a strong contender as well as a skilful one.
MAN ON!
Yes, he was pretty strong .... not sure Lamela can cope but I hope he does. Fitness is a big helper.
Geofspurs
Erik could probably do with at least half a season to get gelling with the rest of the squad.... I just hope that if we do purchase more players that they can fit in pretty quickly as there's not really time or space in the PL to get it too wrong.
MAN ON!
My team for next week? Lloris and 10 others!
MAN ON!
Not sure about Lloris. The rest look good!
Geofspurs
My only thought on pre-season is to stay fit. Results are meaningless. I am concerned about our lack of quality at centre half. There seems to be a go slow on the transfer policy, probably down to Levy's pockets!! Team for Saturday, Lloris, Naughton, Davies, Kaboul,Vertonghen, Capoue, Holtby, Lennon, Ericsson, Lamela and Ade.
RAF Yid
I'm a bit confused as to why MP rested all the WC players except Nabil and Hugo. Will any of them be considered against WHU having not played in the pre-season matches?
MAN ON!
Your not far wrong Man on. As my friend and i were discussing yesterday, we have a very good squad, you can write down 2 teams of a 11 that are almost like for like. The positive is that it shows we have more strength in depth than at any time I can ever remember. The flip side however is that it shows we lack players who have that really sprinkling of stardust, that rise to the top. Erricsen is possibly the only exception. Lamela was or is the big hope. Whether that hope is justified ir not is the big question.
gatch75
RAF Yid.. Why would you choose Davies ahead of Rose?
MAN ON!
RAF - I'd say your team with Rose in for Davies. My only doubt is Verts as something tells me that he'll be off to MU for big money now Vermaelen has gone to Barca.
Love totty
My thoughts on it ...... Only from TV viewing and all IMHO. .......... Lloris one great save and not much else to do. Naughton did OK, couple of great interceptions in second half when we were under pressure. Dier had a very sound debut. Better with Kaboul than when Fryers came on. Kaboul good strong performance, I'm worried that he went straight down the tunnel when subbed (injury probs again) Rose, who is this new guy? Unrecognisable from last season. Well played despite my rating of you in the past. Bentaleb did what he does, cleaning up in front of back four. Never exciting but efficient. Holtby played with tremendous enthusiasm (too much at times, red card for one tackle) and better with Capoue alongside him. Eriksen hasn't slotted into MPs system yet nor has Lamela, both need to work more. Lennon is a revelation this season, much more direct and unlucky not to beat the off-side trap a couple of times. Ade was a bit hit and miss, took his goal well but missed other easier opportunity. Soldado was quick to react for his goal, made some unseen runs and played a couple of excellent passes to open up Schalke's defence. Second half ... Davies wasn't as good as Rose although his reading and positioning is better. Townsend was lively and a problem for their defence. Assist for Soldado's goal but wasted chances and shooting instead of passing to Kane who was better positioned. Kane looked clumsy at times definitely no better than Lamela who he replaced. Carroll was enthusiastic and played some good passes but the defence suffered once he and Fryers came on for Bentaleb and Kaboul. Ceballos did ok and was unlucky not to score in his few minutes on the pitch. Great save from their keeper.
longtimespur
There has to be some doubt against Verts staying. Why has he not played and/or signed a new contract yet, that he's supposedly been offered?
MAN ON!
Geofspurs ... my team v Spammers would be ..... Lloris, Naughton, Dier, Kabooul, Rose, Capoue, Holtby, Lamela, Eriksen, Lennon, Soldado. Subject to injuries. Subs Adebayor, Townsend, Mason, Vertonghen, Chadli, Sandro and Vorm
longtimespur
Cant really argue with holtby starting after a very impressive pre season. He has benefited more than anyone. For me i still worry with him playing against more dynamic cms. Spammers will at times play direct with mf runners looking for knock downs. They will come out of the traps like a house on fire. Think of the last 10 mins of the game last season after we had dominated. Id be comfortable with a more solid 2 screening at least until we take the sting out of the game and their fans start demanding for Sams head. Not sure where Capoue was yesterday but hes tailor made.
gatch75
longtimespur. Why Dier and not Jan?
MAN ON!
I don't think Holtby should play next week. He needs to calm down and be a lot more disciplined and, I'm not even thinking about his rash challenges.

tarkan mardinCOYS
Who who who?
MAN ON!
Man-On, it's just a case of being the better defender. I suppose because of my age, I always wanted the full backs to be good defensively. Rose is far more offensive minded and I think we will score. You?
RAF Yid
I'm guessing but wouldn't surprise me if Man.td, made a double bid for Dembele / Vertonghen...£50m...would secure the deal. My team for Wetspam > Lloris,Naughton,Kaboul,Dier,Rose,Bentaleb,Eriksen,Lamela,Kane,Townsend,Adebayor. Subs;Vorm,Davies,Fryers,Sandro,Holtby,Lennon,Soldado.
82spursdebut
Lamela starting over Townsend is by no means a given. It was plain to see yesterday who was the bigger threat. Personally for me id start lamela purely because i think hes by and large warranted it after a good pre season, he will gain confidence, and Townsend always has an impact off the bench and is perfect when the game is stretched. Erricsen on the right and lamela central however is not for me, im all for interchanging pieces but erricsen central imo
gatch75
Lloris Naughton,Kaboul,Dier,Rose, Eriksen,Bentaleb, Lamela,Kane,Townsend, Adebayor
82spursdebut
RAF Yid. I think Rose looks ready and able to start next week but I can't see Davies being up to it yet. He looks nervous to me. I think he's a good player but will need easing in, unless he is desperately needed because of injuries etc.
MAN ON!
i think we are behind the 8 ball in terms of finalising a team for next week.to me poch seems like a fitness fanatic and those who are not at optimum will not get selected.
tarkan mardinCOYS
Play Eriksen alongside Bentaleb. Holtby is too rash, in the tackle. Always has been and doesn't change.
82spursdebut
this is a high risk strategy that will isolate players.double even triple sessions in the day.
tarkan mardinCOYS
captain sensible required.
tarkan mardinCOYS
As much as Holtby has a good spirit and engine, I feel he is just as likely to make a telling mistake that leads to a goal against, as much as he could also score himself or set one up. I just think he could be too much of a risk next week. He's strong but can still be easily barged off the ball or misplace a pass when under pressure.
MAN ON!
Have a good day fellow Yids...

Thfc1989 what an ignorant comment ! With thoughts and assumptions like that your comments truly truly belong to the gutter. Shameful thinking !
Highgatespur
the hammers will be targetting holtby next week.he needs to calm down
tarkan mardinCOYS
Ive said many times rose in the right system, and with good coaching will be a fine player. Wasn't a coincidence yesterday he had Lennon infront who offers excellent protection and provides width. Rose had until and Imo ott flack last year with errisen playing off the left drifting in field. This put huge onus in the fb to push upfield providing width but as erricsen was infield meant the fb was unbelivably isolated if we lost possesion. This is where rose got all the flack about wanting to bomb forward like a headless chicken. That's purely down to tactics, and not some brain dead half arsed attitude. Was noticable yesterday that the fbs were more compact.
gatch75
As you say Man On...Holtby doesn't suit a Cdm position, in top level competition.
82spursdebut
Love Totty, I have the same thoughts regards Vertonghen. I thought he was nailed on for $ity but it's gone quiet. With Vermaelan (spelling) gone to Barcelona, I guess they won't another left sided centre half. We need to be big and strong,
RAF Yid
Against WHU that is!!

Holtby is full of energy but like others have said he is sometimes like a loose cannon, he needs to calm down a bit. Not sure what is going on with the WC players that didn't play, you would have thought some would be on the bench. Let's wee what this week will bring us and then bring on west ham.

Watching yesterday and other pre season games, we have to have Capoue in our side against Spammers. Sorry Gatch, but Bentaleb did not have a great game yesterday. he kept leaving passes short, lost it too many times and did not make the interceptions like Capoue that the role he was in demanded. I hope he develops, but he has an arrogance which makes me nervous and more often than not goes backwards and slows play up. This doesn't help our Lennon/Lamela/Eriksen formation. Capoue and Mason were better than Holtby and Bentaleb. I would get Dembele alongside Capoue.
Windlespur
MAN ON .. I don't think Verts will be match fit and I'm still not certain he's staying. Be so easy to kill speculation by signing but he hasn't. entwhistle .... IMHO I think Townsend is by far a better impact sub than a starter. I cannot say the same about Lamela. How do you know Soldado wants to leave and we are trying to move him on?
longtimespur
you would have Sandro ready to come on, if that was the case.
82spursdebut
I feel lamela plays better with soldado, they have a better understand. Will they play each other is doubtful. Pochettino has said 25 players for a squad is enough and we have too many players, time to trim the squad.
Kong
their have been suggestions that soldado could be moved on but no one has come in.only athletico who want him on loan.
tarkan mardinCOYS
Lamela..comes inside most of the time.....Kane and Adebeyor...also filling, in, the middle....alternating....on occaisions.
82spursdebut
a loan makes absolutely no sense to me.
tarkan mardinCOYS
We all have opinions and we all have favourites BUT it doesn't matter one iota what we think. Only one man will pick the team and he will be held to account by all on here. If it goes well he'll still get stick for playing A instead of B. Or not playing C when he played D. See all these new players we have and nobody new about ... lol
longtimespur
Spurs played well yesterday I felt. Very compact and played good football. Not spectacular but showed intelligence and good possession against a good German side. No loop sided, gung ho run a round a bit football. Everyone did their job. Lamela was very quiet and Eriksen was in neutral for most part. Lennon and Rose were the best players in the 1st half. I feel Lennon has a big part to play in the coming season. COYS!

Yes, absolutely right....Been a very difficult pre season, for Mopo...so many Ego's etc. But they have kept winning, to their credit.....gaining more followers from around the world.....BUT ..all means very little if we lose to Wetspam ( not that I think we will ).
82spursdebut
We looked decent in 1st half. Should have had 3 goals in 2nd half.. decision making passes in the box was bad, by Townsend, Ceballos. Their goal was totally bad defending, nobody within 5 yards of KPB.. Lots to improve this week on training ground. Dier looked good, so with Verts Kaboom will make our CB more solid. Sandro looked slow to me..hope he gets better and injury free. I can excuse Holtby for the two footed tackle, as he was against former team and trying to impress.. should calm down in PL games, after MP has a word with him. Lamela will be ok, bully opposition players will not worry him.. cos he played against Serie A ...Italy's hard defenders, and Argies League...COYS

I know its easy to come up with conspiracies when the WC players are absent but I'm just wondering whether all clubs are giving them extended rests from pre-season. That way, they will last the season better.

As for the game, I think it went to plan. Both strikers scored which is always a good outcome from any game. Guys like Rose, Lennon, Naughton seem to have upped their games since last season and we look a tight and competitive unit under Poch.
muttley
All about opinions windlespur, i think bentakeb is in the rose Townsend naughton camp that get constant unwarranted flak. i thought the ball moved far earlier and forward far more when he was on than sandro, of the 3 deeper cms sandro capoue and bentalaeb the ball retention is better with bents and capue. Sandro doesn't trust his technique. You can have an out and out ball winner when u have midric but without him sandros limitations are plain to see. Personally i would start capoue and bentaleb Saturday assuming moussa is not ready
gatch75
gatch75 .. re Sandro, I would have him on the subs bench in case we needed to see out the game. As much as I love the guy he hasn't that much going forward but he sure can break up play. Capoue, to me, is the more complete player. Don't forget that Sandro is still only 25 and has time to improve
longtimespur
Valid point longtime

Regarding our current poll, It would appear on yesterday's perfomance, that Rose's 5 yr deal is a great decision. Only time will corroborate.

On saurday we are playing one the rare teams who play a traditional high temp old school British type game. They will hit the striker early, getting mf runners to pick up second balls. And cross early. To me if hes fit daws is nailed to start, dier would be far too big a risk and it would be a real baptism of fire. The 2cms will be in a real scrap which is why id play capoue and bentaleb, in that sense thetef be an argument for sandro be he looks unfit. There's no better way to alleviate a high press than to play direct. First 30 mins or so will need us to take the sting out the game.

Guess what, I don't agree about Dawson. I do want him to start next weekend.....for Hull FC :-)

Muttley.... if Dawson starts for THFC I sure hope Dier doesn't have to play alongside him.
longtimespur
I'm off to watch Lpool friendly on BT Sport. followed by Charity Shield catch up later.

I can see the sense in Dawson if Carroll was playing for WHU. However we should also look to keep the ball, therefore Sandro and Dawson should be benched.
RAF Yid
Id personally move him on as well mutley, been a good servant, however I just dont think Poch would start Dier over Daws against a team like West Ham. This is one of only a handfull of game that actually suits Daws. The game in general has moved on from the traditional Ball winning CB who defends his 18 yard box. I got a feeling Spammers will look to win the game early and put us right under the cosh.
gatch75
Eric Dier was fantastic yesterday, only one game & a friendly but he`ll become a fan favourite with more assured performances like that.
Fanny adams
gatch - I thought Big Sam was going to play a more attractive brand of football this season and had brought in Teddy to help in the forward areas. You might be right though that it will still be a lot of balls in the air at our defence but I'd still go with Vertonghen, Kaboul or Dier ahead of Dawson. Kaboul is a beast in the air anyway.
muttley
Big Sam and attractive football?? That just doesnt go together. Id be MORE THAN HAPPY WITH vERTS and Kaboul. I assumed Verts wouldnt be up for selection after not even being on the bench yesterday.

tarkan mardinCOYS
longtime .... I just see Ade as our most likely scorer and I think he has a much better all-round game than Soldado, and Kane. Well, imo.
Geofspurs
The way I see this season is, 5th or 6th would be considered successful as we would have continued to be in front of the chasing pack. But, the next season will need to see two ‘world class’ players brought in so that we are in the top four mix with a realistic shout for 1st. By then we will know which positions they need to be in. That will mean spending whatever it takes to get them! Every top four team has match winners except us ... Ade could be an outside exception to this, but that’s debatable. The cups are a different story as we have a squad that could carry one of them off. Of course it all depends on how MP gets the squad to perform, so, who knows .... ?!
Geofspurs
Thinking back through the years it has never been difficult to pick 6 or seven starters for the team sheet. The spine of the team has usually picked itself. But not now. We have so many players with an equal claim for a first team place. I’m not sure what this says about us at the moment except we’re good but not good enough .... depending on expectations.
Geofspurs
I said something similar on an earlier post Geoffspurs. The positive is that we have the best squad I can remember, 2 full teams of pretty much even quality. The flip side is we lack players with real game changing quality who rise above the others. All our competitors for top 4 have them. We are now looking for Poch to develop them like Rogers did last year
gatch75
Gatch/Geof, sorry for the downer but I still think we have a limited squad. I like the addition of Vorm and Davies but we are still short at CB. Ade is Ade, Kane I think will come good but not yet and we are a long way off knowing our best XI. Granted we have had some good results but the league will be different.
RAF Yid
gatch75 ... We both agree on that.
Geofspurs
ahh ***** my satellite is fecked because of the weather
tarkan mardinCOYS
Good result yesterday, but hardly a barometer of where we are, as both teams were missing either most of, or all of, their WC players. I am still not sure if we, or even MP knows with any certainty, what is our best, and starting X1, just one week from the end of the season. I am still convinced that we need to conclude the Musacchio deal, or find an altenative CB, before the window closes, rather than place any reliance on Kaboul's fitness, or Dawson's ability to drop clangers, and concede goals, and I would also like to see a genuine CF in to pressure opposition defenders, I still think Soldado is a CB's day off, and unlikely to score regularly enough in the PL, to justify his massive fee, he is a neat footballer, without enough about him, to frighten anybody. In an ideal world it would be nice to have a proper wide man, who can produce crosses, and diagonal balls into strikers, but I can't see it happening. I am not to fussed about whether we get Schneiderlin in or not, I think Capoue can do an adequate job in the DMF position. So please can we have a CB and a striker, then I would be confident, we could have a go for top 4. If we stay as we are, remembering last season's failings with the same players, I see us at 6th, 7th.
Frank
RAF I think the supporting cast is very good and compares favorably with most squads in the league, 2 TEAMS OF GOOD QUALITY pREMIER LEAGUE PLAYERS. But as mentioned the fact we have so many variations of what is our best 11 is also concerning as it shows we lack start quality. The issue for me is our starting 11 whatever that may be is lacking any true gamechangers. Whether that be a Kompany at CB, a Modric in CM, a Sanchez or Silva behind the striker or Van Persie up top. We arent gonna go out and but a James Rodriguez or Falcao. So our approach has to be to develop players ala Rogers & LFC with Sterling Coutinho, Henderson etc and rely on Good management and coaching to make us more stout as a unit defensively. Theres no denying weve lost ground in the last 18 months and our competitors have all had very strong transfer windows.
gatch75
Just popped innow and still not really sure of the final score, based on comments I'm guessing 3-1 or 1-1 not sure which! Re the starting line, can some one clarify if West Ham have hopefully faxed through their staring line up for next weeks game? Hmm, thought not, so why the fork would we give them seven days notice of our starting eleven. A half oaced kick about is no kind of warm-up for the premiership. Plus most of our World Cupbreturnees were playing qualter finals and semi finals less then four weeks ago. They are hardly that ring rusty. Dier appears like a good addition to the squad, holtby was played out of position, he's Eriksens cover. Youngsters get more games which is great because it'll be alot harder mid season. Finally, as I said all summer Kaboul had another good performance at the back so where the CB crisis we've been screaming about all summer!
Slurms McKenzie
Of course I meant to say one week from the start of the season.

tarkan mardinCOYS
RAF ... Your comment is not a 'downer' ... I agree with you, mate. CB is a must, imo.
Geofspurs
Slurms, regarding Kaboul. He is a good CB when fit, but has only started 72 games in 4.5 years after his return from Pompey, so is rarely match fit, how long will he go this season before another lay off, after playing competitive full paced PL games, rather than kickabout pre-season friendlies, as he has this summer. In addition to that, he is entering the last year of his contract, so the dilema is, 1) Do you offer him a new deal, I doubt it, given his injury record, 2) Do you simply let him stay through this season, and allow him to walk on a "Bosman" for nothing at the end of the season, or 3) Do we sell him either in this window, or in January, and at least recoup a fee for him, if only maybe £3 or £4M, but better than nowt. Better to face the situation now, and get a quality CB (Musacchio) in, give him a 5 year deal, and build a stable partnership with Vertonghen, with Dier, Dawson/Chiriches, whichever one is to stay, and Vujkevic or Hall or Zeki Fryers as cover, and back up, and the CB future is secure. We would then have disposed of Kaboul and hopefully Dawson or Chiriches and the CB situation can be put to bed for 4 or 5 seasons, rather than stumble on for this season, hoping that Kaboul avoids injury, then face facts, and have to rebuild, when Kaboul walks at the end of his contract. I consider this to be a very dangerous strategy, based on wishful thinking that statistical evidence suggests, is grossly misplaced.
Frank
My name for next week:

Lloris
Kaboul, Dier, Verts, Rose
Bentaleb, Holtby
Lennon, Lamela, Eriksen
Adebayor

Walker would have been in at RB if fit. Kaboul chosen over Nuaghton as it's against an Allydace team, big men at the back over sharper quickers ones. Dier looked good enough, very impressed. Lamela gets the nod over Townsend as You've got to put faith in him, also,I think Townsend can be more of an impact sub if needed. Soldado will have to become prolific very quickly if he wants any part this season....
T.H.F.Chris
Tarkan ... I don’t think Pool will fold this season. They’ll remain competitive ... but not to the extent of last season. I think without Suarez, and with CL, they will find things a lot tougher ... well, I hope so anyway. But they’re still a good shout for top four.

How are west ham going to cope with the Olympic stadium, they haven't even sold out for their first game of the season, which also happens to be their cup final...all this after last seaso.... Startford is going to be a very lonely place when they are in league one, about 2021 I reckon.
T.H.F.Chris
I feel it is time to move Eriksen into Cdm...but alongside who !?...be the question. I see La' Arse' have Chambers playing CB today.....perhaps they need a CB. I wouldn't sell Kaboul before Dawson, at present.

poch needs to get us playing the tottenham way-i dont think their should be an expectation as such.its the 2nd season of his tenure we should judge him.IMO
tarkan mardinCOYS
Geof I was a bit worried about that but I think being the first game of the season will be a real benefit for us, players take time to warm up and bone crunching challenges are quite rare in August.. Had this been a wet Novermber night we'd get slaughtered with that midfield but in the dry hot August conditions I think we've got a chance. Sandro on the bench though.
T.H.F.Chris
the competition is too severe.liverpool according to the bookies are 5th favourites and are way ahead of us-

Lpool look impressive, 4-0. Quick and decisive with and without the ball. Plenty of movement and a lot tighter in defence than last season. Wait and see how they cope come the season. Home to Saints then away to City and us.

The season hasn’t even started and news outlets can’t agree on the league ladder positions ... most have us at 18th, VS has us at 15th! Poetic licence? We are officially THFC not Spurs but, a Danny by any other name, plays just the same, ain’t that a shame, what’s in a name?!

Geofspurs
Sounds daft but I can see reasons to keep Dawson. Kaboul is injury prone and can be sold, no question. With good youth performers, Dier, Fryers and Velejovic, they can hold the EL team with one other, maybe Chiriches or Dawson. If Vertonghen wants out which I still suspect is the case, we could be in big trouble.
RAF Yid
When / if.....Vertonghen..commits himself to THFC. Then Dawson becomes surplus to THFC.
82spursdebut
If were able to get good money for Kaboul then I would agree about selling him. Let's be honest, it's gonna be £5m or less so there is absolutely no point. He is the superior centre half over Dawson who needs to go so we might as well use him within the squad. Hopefully, we'll land Musacchio and I was super impressed with Dier. We have Vertonghen and Chiriches as well. There is no point keeping Dawson who is average at best and doesn't fit the style of play under Poch. Kaboul has had a decent pre-season whereas Dawson has been shocking for most of it. With Chiriches injured and Musacchio or ANOther not yet signed, it's a no brainer to keep Kaboul.
muttley
Liverpool won just like we did, does it mean more then our result, no as it was a friendly, the real test starts next week when pochettino selects his 1st 11, then we will get an idea if who us really in his plans.

I hope so 82, but I also think if City and Utd turn his head, who knows. The other worry is the stadium. Funds could be tight.

I wouldn't buy this Musacchio chap either....I'd persevere with Kaboul, Vertonghen, Dier, Fryers, Veljkovik, Chiriches (could even lose him )....Capoue....Sandro. They are all Blooded in the Prem'....let them evolve. See what occurs next summer.

It is the start of the season. There are clearly players who are not physically ready. We play 5 games between the 16th and the 31'st, before the international break. Lots of players will play. West Ham, Limassol, QPR, Limassol, Liverpool will be a big challenge. The first four games, we should win. Liverpool is a home game so we had better be up for that. September 1 is the Transfer Window close, so I'd say it is going to be a very busy 16 days for Spurs. Let's see how it goes. COYS
peterballb
I actually think that Lamela will start on the bench next weekend. I think Poch will play Lennon, Eriksen and Holtby ahead of Bentaleb and Capoue with Adebayor up front. Guys like Sandro, Lamela, Soldado, Townsend will give us a strong bench. Diame, Noble and Nolan will be physical but we have the quicker players and will need to keep the ball moving.
muttley
Peter, one CB to buy, where's your money?
RAF Yid
Yes, but alongside who ? Lamela comes inside most of the time..filling space...plus Kane or Adebayor, alternating dropping into midfield. Only need one protective space filling Cdm...in front of CD. As long as the two cdms' work together...maintain shape..and stay disciplined. Eriksen has a turn of speed...that is useful. Can still shoot...take freekicks and corners....along with others. Arteta...Ramires...Fernando..Fernandinho......all smallish chaps....not overly physical. Thus....perfect position for Eriksen....could be better than Modric, when it comes to assists and goals scored.
82spursdebut
Cos' he is a intelligent footballer....listens about Discipline and shape, talented, good ball skills, good forward vision and has a turn of speed. I think he is suited to that position....if suitable players work together as a team. I.e...how Lamela plays...in off the right. Kane and Adebayor alternating..dropping into midfield. Townsend..keeping shape on the left...with direct runs..either at goal or to the byline. Another disciplined holding midfielder must be alongside Eriksen....thus filling in...if Eriksen moves forward...and when defending..alongside him. WHO !?......take your pick....but I'd be going with the players from yesterday...assuming Capoue..is unfit. As for never playing there before....not sure about that. As long as he has a brain and listens. I cannot see him Being as stupid as Holtby.
82spursdebut
I can see Paulinho fitting in. If Poch can put Holtby in the right wing slot to help retrieve the ball from the defence than why can't he put Paulinho in a attacking midfield role or slightly deeper role? COYS!
a.k.a.james1spurs
With MP playing 4231, the 2 defensive mid's both have to be able to defend well. Eriksen is not at all defensive... I noticed that as soon as one of our wing backs is on the front foot, the CB on their side immediately moves in to cover the full back position. this means that if possession is given away and the full back is out of position with the CB covering, the defensive mid's will be expected to drop deep and cover either or both CB's. Christian is not suitable for this role.
MAN ON!
In this instance...the other Cdm falls into the CB position. Do not require two Defensive minded cdm's.....look at the other top teams...as example.
82spursdebut
Written rule......when one fullback goes forward, the other stays back.
82spursdebut
Not beyond the bounds of possibility for Saturday's players to play against West Ham next week, and we see just one WC returnee. Dier was impressive and will surely play a fair bit this season, Rose notably improved, Soldado involved and contributing as was Holtby, but Bentaleb's passes upfield to nobody in particular and yards past any Spurs player were disappointing. I wouldn't be hard on Davies whose attraction for Spurs ddi not involve his speed. Dier isn't fast either but it is intelligence and anticipation as well as capacity to play a decent ball that will strengthen defence. Good goal from Adebayor after several players' neat moves, while Soldado's speed of decision and action in front of goal though from a very awkward angle, did what was required. I do hope that Soldado and Lamela are not going to have their every potential goal-scoring move picked over for its failure, from the off this season. Let such players relax and get into each match and they will come good in team effort.
Airwave
I'm not saying that you need two out and out defensive mid's 82, but I believe they both do need to be able to defend when required. Otherwise, you've only got effectively one deep lying mid, when under attack, that you can rely upon. Looking at someone like Modric in that role, he is pretty good at getting stuck in with a tackle as well, Eriksen isn't.
MAN ON!
I disagree....Eriksen better tackler than Modric......as long as he stays disciplined and on his feet plus puts his body in the correct position, when defending. Hoddle was no great defensive midfielder...and when alongside...Villa , Ardiles, Hazard..........who was the defensive player ?....i.e..no one.....just teamwork...and staying disciplined and in shape. Lamela...Kane ..Adebayor....will do their fair share of space filling.....plus maintain an attacking threat...that prevents the opposition of thinking they can pour forward. We must show intent.....we have the better players.
82spursdebut
82spursdebut if any player pushes forward it's the main responsibility of the dm to slot in or at least cover that position. The CM should then hold back and try and help out defensively. Otherwise a wide midfielder should hold back or CB should move across. It's all about communication and practice in training. COYS!
a.k.a.james1spurs
Hoddle, Ossie and Hazard could all get stuck in when they had to. I haven't seen Christian do this at all. If he gets picked to play in that position any time soon, I'll be surprised.

Spurs fan says - yeah, we won't win anything this season and have you seen our new top? it's terrible!...there was no talk of signings or a fight put up to defend Spurs just a resignation that we're mediocre I know that's just a sample but we really could do with securing the next generation of fan....I think they'll be even more fickle than the one's we have at the moment....

Roberts was a centreback alongside Miller....with Perryman and Hughton as fullbacks. Mabbutt came on the scene a little later. WHY...do we think Defensive midfielder ?......are we a scared team !?.....one that likes to keep the ball in fear of loseing it...and the opposition scoring. BORING...YAWN......YAWN. That is not how to attract fans to THFC......yesterday, 1st half...we had 3 to 4 shots..that puts you to sleep. Who pays to watch that !? We need ....entertainers......hence trying to get the better players on the pitch...but maintaining entertainment and discipline.....showing intent to the opposition ad believeing we will win...b'cos we have the better players. What I'm saying is......we need Heroes....thus keep Lamela and Townsend ...in the side, Let's see shots on goal....Addy and Kane......and keep the on target set pieces. We'll score....5 ....they score 3.......WHY !?...cos' we have SpiderLlorisman....lol

RAF, I have heard in from a few sources that are generally correct, that Musacchio is either happening, or has already happened. Same for Yedlin. I still expect some surprises at the end. Kaboul apparently intends to run his contract down and Dawson will nay go.

I am very concerned that the fluidity we need does not seem to be there and the WC players are still not in. Bentaleb really needs a loan. Like Townsend, he seems to think he has made it. His passing yesterday was woeful. Livermore looks a star by comparison. COYS
peterballb
I said...Eriksen alongside....one other......question is WHO ? One other point.....THFC are not just competing against other sides / clubs....in trying to keep people interested......they are competing against many forms of entertainment. Real Madrid are my 2nd fav' team.
82spursdebut
Putting Eriksen as CM is an interesting idea, mainly as I don't actually know where he wants to play...? It can't be left, he looks much more suited to central but not strong enough for CDM.. I'd give him a few games there in the cup, see how he gets on,,, you'll get away with not defending properly in EL but not in the prem.
T.H.F.Chris
Eriksen is fleet of foot and thought. Not cloggily defensive, so much as deft, creative and attacking by nature. Players should play to strengths.
Airwave
Airwave agree. Eriksen is not a Modric (sorry to mention his name Geof!). Eriksen has either been placed as a left side midfielder or the most advanced central midfielder. Playing him as a deep lying midfielder will lose some of his creative spark. No doubt he has the ability to play off a DM or CM but he would be wasted. Personally I'd give him licence to roam between CM and everywhere in the final third. All he has to do is pick up on the nearest opponent when we don't have the ball. COYS!
a.k.a.james1spurs
Peterbalb, if Musacchio has happened why no announcement, if it is still progressing, confirmation of that in the media would be nice. Same goes for Yedlin, why is it taking so long? Spurs seem unique in the time they take to close out transfer deals.

Spurschick did you see anything to suggest Chadli is good enough to play in the Prem for Tottenham? He was dreadful last season and at the WC for Holland. We need pace in those areas and with Davies towing a caravan playing Chadli in front of him would leave us one paced and bereft of dynamism.

Jordan, I agree about Chadli (except the Holland bit), sounds like he might be off to Sunderland. Davies will be okay, he defends first and will if nothing else drive Rose to have better standards.

Chadli got substituted for the second half of Belgium's first game in Brazil, but played four times out of a possible five for Belgium in the recent World Cup. And compare his performances to fellow Belgians. The man who replaced him in that first game was a big improvement. That same man thereafter played bad game after bad game for Belgium. Why was Chadli mentioned so much in that first and other matches, along with Vertonghen and Dembele? Because our narrow TV commentators knew the names from our Premier League, as they did Chelsea-linked names Hazard and De Bruyn, and knew of few others they could witter about while 22 players contested each match in front of them.
