Big Deal for Harry Kane!

Spurs have confirmed that Harry Kane has signed a new five year contract with the club.

21 year old Kane has effectively cemented one of the current three striking positions with an impressive end of last season and his early form under the new manager. As things stand, Harry might consider that his versatility is an added strength to his game, as he seems happy to play through the middle as a lone or supporting striker, whilst has also looked useful cutting in from wide or deeper roles, something he made his name for in the academy.

Although at some stage, I expect Spurs to bring in another striker, I actually think that Harry is the safest bet of the three to remain at the club. Everyone knows that Adebayor is an up and down character, whilst we are still waiting for Soldado to click, if he ever does. You imagine that Harry will be content to take his chances when they arrive this season, but with more games and confidence, I feel he has real potential to become a top player.

It will be interesting to see how he works under Pochettino and I will be interested to see if he ultimately develops as a main striker or one in a supporting role..

I though the Rose deal was mad, but this is just craaaazzzyyy. Given a FIVE YEAR new deal…….for what exactly?? Utterly bonkers IMO

Imo another home grown given a long term contract to allow our quota to stay current.

Having said that, he is looking better in pre-season. Lets hope he continues to improve. coys

ro6ertj
This is all rather strange with him not being in the euro games. Does it mean he is first choice striker under MP?

only time will tell......all will be answered....coys
rovinella62spurs
i do like this emphasis on youth under poch actually
tarkan mardinCOYS
Unless MP works some serious David Blaine style magic on Kane then I just don’t see the logic in this move. Danny Rose was our first choice LB last season, so as daft as it was its understandable that he got a new contract. Kane has had a handful of appearances in the PL. Sorry but what happens if he doesn’t improve this year? We have him on our books for another 4 years is what happens. This is exactly the problem at spurs, we keep offering long contracts to fringe players. MP cannot seriously be considering letting Kane have a regular spot in the starting 11. Getting a spot on the bench is risky enough!! Im all for building a team around young players and that’s ok if Kane were back up striker to say Augero and Suarez, but when your forward line is struggling as much as it is how can you give a 5 year deal to a 3rd choice, unproven, bang average striker. Serious concerns about levy at the moment.
hudderspur
I have yet to be impressed with Harry Kane. Perhaps they're hoping to sell him for a few million to a championship club. Hopefully I'm wrong.
Shannon
I expect all the Spurs negative supporters to apologise on here to Harry Kane when he "makes it" but no thanks to them for helping him. Knock Knock who's there . Ans A Spurs supporter.

Camper - How is anything said above negative? He has yet to prove anything, so how does he deserve a new FIVE YEAR contract!! It nothing personal against the man, its just how it is.
hudderspur
agree camper, the bloke was given the chance to show whether he could step up to the first team and his taken it.well done tim sherwood for showing faith in him
tarkan mardinCOYS
He'll be on small money so no big deal which ever way you look at it.

i rather have kane up front than soldado.thats for sure
tarkan mardinCOYS
How can people say they're not impressed with Harry when he has played just 7 PL games for us last season and scored 3!? Half the amount of Soldado who played in 28 PL matches. Give the guy a chance already!
MAN ON!
i think he would be on 12-15 grand a week.not bad money
tarkan mardinCOYS
Have you seen the price of pies?
Love totty
hudderspur If we never take a risk on a promising home grown player, why have an Academy. Anyway some "names" we have sighed are as big a risk. Kane can do a good job for us, while on I guess lowish wages.
camper
It's big money that can root a player at a club not the length of his contract. He'll go where he can play if the wages are matched.

It's Eels in Aspic down at the Boleyn ground on Saturday.

ertwisle- Kane can do that.

First up - The Tottenham Hotspur squad for the qualifying round of the Europa League has been given to UEFA. Brad Friedel is the number two and not Michel Vorm for the two games against AEL Limassol (Cyprus). Kyle Walker has been included which suggests he is not a long way from fitness, Tom Carroll is included amid loan speculation and Ryan Mason who emerged on the North American pre-season tour is included. Goalkeepers; 1 Hugo Lloris 24 Brad Friedel Defenders; 2 Kyle walker 3 Danny Rose 4 Younès Kaboul 5 Jan Vertonghen 6 Vlad Chiricheş 15 Eric Dier 16 Kyle Naughton 20 Michael Dawson 33 Ben Davies Midfielders; 7 Aaron Lennon 8 Paulinho 11 Erik Lamela 14 Lewis Holtby 17 Andros Townsend 19 Mousa Dembélé 22 Nacer Chadli 23 Christian Eriksen 28 Thomas Carroll 29 Étienne Capoue 30 Sandro 38 Ryan Mason Forwards; 9 Roberto Soldado 10 Emmanuel Adebayor The first game is next Thursday 21st August away in Cyprus, shown on ITV4 in the UK and the second leg at White Hart Lane is the following week (28th August) before we play Liverpool that Sunday. - See more at: http://tottenhamhotspur.blogspot.co.uk/2014/08/no-vorm-in-europa-league-qualifying.html#sthash.fSfbDklC.dpuf

Very interesting!...not the Kane contract but the duration. Rose 5 years, Kane 5 years, Poch 5 years, Yedlin (5 years) because although offered 4 years, not starting 'til the 1015 season. So, the conspiracy theory would be if Poch leaves in 5 years we will have a Southampton-like clear out at the same time!!...I wonder if Vert is being offered 5 years too. COYS!
Critical_Spur
Next came Churchill over at QPR wanting Townsend and Kane for Remy.

Another article I saved when ''not so daft levy'' gave Danny Rose a 5yr contract:- Do you think that Levy has agreed to give Rose a 5 year contract because he believes he is the answer to our prayers at left back?Since the Bosman ruling came into play, Rose’s contract was almost up so sign him for 5 years; give him the reserve left back spot; include him as one of the home grown players in the squad, we need a certain amount of home grown players, and sell him for decent money in a years time - certainly by a lot more extra than his small wages. It is what Levy does; it is what every club should do. Why did we increase Falque’s contract? Have you not noticed we just got £4m for someone who has played for us once, when we bought him for £1m. We have given Obika a new contract - is this because we believe he is going to be the answer to our prayers up front? Levy is managing to keep us near the top with a tiny stadium. He has built the most staggering training ground - if you haven’t seen it go and see it. The plans for the new ground are incredible and the funding is in place. Tottenham have this vision because of the business acumen of our chairman. Feel free to write an article next year headlined ‘How the hell did we get £8m for Danny Rose’.
spu 4 life
His just done the same with Harry Kane, so good luck to the lad and if Levy decides to sell him at a later date, he can get more money for him, plus his home grown, like Levy's lettuce and runner beans.

Love totty - I would not eat anything from around that shi7 hole...

I wish Harry Kane the very best of luck. It's just that I think he'll need every bit of it.

I honestly can't see why people think this is mad! I was quite impressed by him nearly every time I have seen him play and think every time he has been given the chance, he has done well...like we saw at the end of last season. He is home grown, is Spurs through and through and is hardly earning top wages. The new contract means that our manager has confidence in his abilities - and he has seen more of what he is capable of in training than we have. I think it's a real shame some supporters complain about bringing a youth through that has done absolutely nothing wrong, is still young and shows a bit of promise. I think he will do well when called on this year.
trevox
Pleased for Kane. The boy has ability. Look forward to seeing his contribution to Spurs in the coming seasons. COYS!
a.k.a.james1spurs
The fact that he is home grown and Spurs through and through should be a bonus, not the reason he gets a five-year contract.

Harry Kane scored 3 goals in 7 PL appearances last season. And yet he's still not good enough for some on here. Soldado 6 goals in 28....

If Kane was Kanaldo and had cost us 25m from an Italian or Spanish club I'm sure a lot more would be saying, hey 3 in his first 7 PL appearances ain't half bad is it?

I am sorry, but whoever said he was looking good in pre season clearly has not watched too much or just the odd highlight on TV. Harry Lane gave an awful performance against Schalke and we need better. Sorry, but a loan and see at best, not a five year deal. We need better than Lane and he needs to stay on his feet, his diving is embarrassing.

I'm chuffed that we have Harry tied down for another 5 years. He has a great touch, strong in the air, a rocket shot and is improving and filling out. I would much rather we sold Ade and Soldado and gave Kane the backup role to somebody like better than the forementioned two. The problem with Kane isn't the five year contract, it's the two strikers in front of him, in my opinion an on-form Kane looks more dangerous than Soldado already. Ade is only here in fits and starts, unplayable on his day, but those only come around occasionally.

Better to get a Bony, Benteke, Remy type to be our main threat and give Kane the number two slot. We would still need a third, even if we were only going with one up front, Wickham would do me fine, still regret missing out on him the first time.

What next a new 5 year contract for Brad. How average do you have to be at Spurs to get a new contract. I'm really not looking forward to this season. None of the signings will propel as into the top four and I think we will struggle to make the top six will the squad we have. I think clubs have figured out the way Levy works in the transfer window, in wanting silly prices for throw away players and then putting in low bids for transfer targets. For years we have needed players that will improve the first team and we always seem to improve the squad but not always the first 11. He should be working on getting players in and out of the door and sort out new contracts once the window shuts. He needs to tie down Verts if there is one player we need to keep. Then provide the new manager with the tools he needs to do the job in hand. I would love to know what the min expectations are for the team this year from Levy. I do love the comments from the manager about having a great squad. I agree that we have a great squad but still would not say we have a great first 11. Still weak in certain areas. Up front is still poor including the new five year contract boy. Still think we need another left winger and if we do not get in a top centre half then the same problems against the top teams will happen. Sort out the in and outgoings first.
nothappyharry
Yes tarkan that was the tune and we should sing this for harry. He was one of few players I thought would never make it for us when he first appeared a few seasons ago, but after last season he has shown some talent and deserves his new deal.
thfc1989
I like the boy, not sure he''ll make it at the top of the PL (but chances are we won't be there either!) as long as he's not on silly money that would put the likes of Hull off buying then there's not a problem...
shedboy2
nothappyharry- I share your concern over our transfer activity...it seems the fight and ambition has truly gone out of the club and we're preparing for years in the wilderness...time will tell but I'm not liking the mood music one bit....

Hull! There's an idea ...

Indeed. Looking bleak. Again.

How is it looking bleak? Dier davies signed both 21 or younger.. lamela Eriksen 22 and 24? The future is lily white... u miserable bunch!

Eriksen, yes, he can play.
Shannon
On kane im sure if you saw Shearer, sheringham drogba klinsmann etc at kanes age you all would have thought they werent good enough for us either.
thfc1989
He's 21 already!
Shannon
Shannon... That means he has got a good few years in him to be a top player for us then. He'll be at he's peak in 5 years and we'll all be begging for him to extend his contract. We can dream!
MAN ON!
MAN ON!, I sincerely hope you're right and I'll be very pleased for the young man if he makes it. I'll be pulling for him, I really will. Come on Arry!

So shannon you would have let kane leave for free rather then a long term relatively risk free contract meaning he has a transfer value for the next 4 and a half years?
thfc1989
Pulling!?
MAN ON!
Yep.
Shannon
I fail to understand why people are unhappy with this contract extension. If he is part of the future we probably extend him again in a couple of years. If he is not, we sell him and get our valuation as he is under contract. Everything suggests he has some ability, the question is whether he will continue to progress or whether he has already hit his level. Like the Rose contract, it is protecting our interests whether the player will stay or will go. Seems wise to me. COYS

Entwistle, he's not quick, but he does seem to have the knack of finding space in dangerous areas. He's also decent in the air, which for us is important as our other strikers arn't so good with their heads. I agree with you that we do need more up top, butI'm happy for Kane to be involved in the cups and some of the PL matches either as a sub or an understudy.
Cleveland ARTSPURS
It's obvious what is happening. Poch sees enough in these youngsters and feels he can improve them. We give them a long contract and time for Poch to do his job in improving them. Once they have improved they will either be good enough to play for us or sold at a higher price than we would get now because they will be better players and under contract. It makes sense. Levy obviously trust Poch and his coaches to get the best out of these players and is investing in them, and so he should. If These players improve over the next season or so but don't quite improve enough to be with us for the length of their contract they will go to a mid table team for a better price. However, they may well improve enough to be back ups and play in the cups. There is a plan and Levy is obviously buying into it on both accounts, buying into Poch philosophy and investing in these players. Look at the youngsters at southampton, they have fetch silly money. English players go for high prices, Levy has seen that and feels Poch can improve them. Its a win win situation, they will not be on mega money. As long as Poch does improve them I see no problem.
BigSpursFan
on his current rate of improvement it will take him another 2-3 years to warrant a permanent starting place. I have no objection if it takes him that long, the only thing I ask is we do NOT rely on him during that time. We need another striker but I don't think we will get one this window so we should focus heavily on defence. CB is essential!!

I think we must have mucked up Man City's plans for the season. First we managed to sign up Rose on a 5 year deal, so they then have to get Silva to stay and give him a 5 year deal. Then we tie down Kane for 5 years so they have to give in and do the same for Agureo. Think they know we have all but signed on the dotted line a 5 year deal for Dawson and that is why Kompany got a new deal.
nothappyharry
Good business, might be third choice striker at present but you have to assume he is happy with that role. In any event, should we sign another striker surely he would not be the one to make way. On another note it's highly unlikely that he will be on a wage that would be prohibitive to selling him, should we decide to at the end if the season as some have suggested.

MM played for Villareal and by all accounts was man of the match. Doesn't sound like someone about to leave the club.
Chelmspur
Chelmspur, all I have heard and read about Musacxchio is that terms etc are all agreed. Only issue is between Villareal and the other owners of the player. Apparently we have already agreed a fee but they want a higher cut of the proceeds. 3rd party ownership is such a dirty game. Him paying may well just be a message to the other owners that they will not be selling and therefore they will not currently be getting anything. Could be a tactic. Could just be Villareal saying, business as usual. Likely a deal for the close of the window, unfortunately. COYS
peterballb
Geofspurs, there is nothing to say that that 5 year contract does not have an early termination clause. I cannot see ENIC, given their penchant for firing coaches, all of a sudden deciding to give a guy with a 37% win percentage free reign for 5 years. COYS

So is Kane still number 37?
thfc1989
You can still transfer list players under contract, so what's the big deal with Rose and Kane having 5 year deals. It's better than giving them a 3 year deal and watching them walk when you might have got an over inflated price for them being homegrown. These contracts are a no brainer for Spurs and in no way mean we've committed to have these players in the first team. As for Kane, I don't see it yet. Works hard, tactically astute but seems to be missing some ability that will make him top drawer. We shall see.
muttley
he's home grown and doesn't have a foreign name so he must be crap, I despair of our fans sometimes.

How does having a player on a 5 year deal protect the clubs interest if the player does not make the grade, and the player refuses to be sold like Dawson, or no one wants to buy him? In these cases THFC are stuck with a player on large wages for up to half a decade, like JJ, Bentley, Dawson etc etc. Of course if the play does make the grade, Levy can charge more money for the player because of the power of the contract. So it is a gamble. One that Levy has lost far more times than he has won over the years. Sure he has become a very famous chairman for selling the likes of Berba, Carrick, Bale, Modric to two of the biggest clubs in the world, but the vast majority of his players he has wanted to move on have been sent out on loan to rot, Prince, Adel, Benny etc, or moved to smaller clubs, Hudd, Mendes, Caulker etc etc to bring in a few mil, to balance the books with a few mil profit. The buy to sell policy at the club has been nothing short of a disaster as ENIC's worst trophy per season stats of any THFC owners since world war two 100% confirms. I mean what's the point in buying quality players if you sell them before they win anything? Unless of course you get rocks off from playing Fantasy Football rather than winning trophy's, or competing in the Champions League, as seems to be the case with our esteemed chairman???
Pele10
If we don't sign some players we are screwed. Imagine Ade gets injured and we're left with 2 goal from open play Soldado and Harry Kane. It really is laughable that we have not strengthened the team this summer and looks like we've done our business now. So many players in our squad are way off what we need I can't believe Levy has allowed this to happen. From CL to struggling to get 6th in 3 years.
jordtheyid
Pocho seems to like Townsend, which might mean he could be part of the 3 attacking midfielders to interchange with the main striker. Townsend, Eriksen and Lamela with Soldado, Ade or Kane. I think it's shaping well. We need a CB and another striker. I think Remy will go. Cheaper than Bony and can play across the forward line. COYS!

Best deduction yet notsohappyharry! 5 years seems to be en vogue ! Anyone had a look at our squad if five years ago - interesting read ....

I've got no problem with Kane getting a new deal. Sure he's unfashionable, he isn't lightning quick, and he would benefit from some speech therapy tuition from Peter Beardsley, but he did enough in the last few weeks of the season to suggest he's a handy enough squad player. I would be worried though, if I thought the deal meant we are out of the market for another striker. It is now the position where we are most thin on the ground, especially with the ACON in mid-season taking Ade out of the equation. I dare say there is wiggle room, as I seem to think that Lamela has played the CF role for Roma with some success. And unless I'm going bananas did Dembele not start out at Fulham playing up top? Not ideal options I grant you. But with plenty of pre-season goals coming from midfield it suggests we won't be solely reliant on a number 9 finding the net. Still, with the transfer window days rapidly dwindling, it would be not signing a striker that I believe could turn out to be our biggest regret in the coming season. Fingers crossed!! Come on you beautiful Spurs!!!

shedboy2
GeofSpurs - Agree with you completely mate. And I have high hopes that more than one of our midfielders will get into double figures this season. Pre-season has shown a much better level of interplay between our 'front-4', something that Soldado seems A. comfortable with, and B. effective at. It has unlocked defences, and resulted in goals. I see no reason why Eriksen, Lamela, and Chadli (and maybe a more disciplined Townsend) shouldn't score regularly with their finishing abilities. Come on you beautiful Spurs!!!
LilyWhiteHart
I welcome the fact that THFC / Kane have committed themselves to eachother. We've seen he has a eye for a goal, quality assists, good football brain, two footed, strength.......reminds me of Mark Falco...and slightly to a lesseer degree...Clive Allen. Niether were quick and pacey....but read the football game very well. For me, Harry..is currently a ideal 4th striker in a 25 man squad , wanting to achieve better success. Plus, at still a young age....may progress to become a top 2 striker in a 25 man squad......time will tell.

Monster season for Kane, i'll stand by my opinion that this guy will be playing for England in the Euro's 2 years from now.
coys1717
COYS1717 - I am loving your optimism, and nothing would please me more than seeing your prediction come true. Thing is though, after supporting Spurs for over 30 years........well, y'know!! Come on you beautiful Spurs!!!
LilyWhiteHart
Lol, i'm tellin ya, the guy has got the ability and the physical attributes to be a decent striker my concern when he was in his teens was his work rate, but the back end of last season I saw massive leap in his commitment to getting in the right areas. If anyone any stats on goal scoring opportunities i'd love to see a comparison for Kane and Soldado.
coys1717
Like I said above, I agree that in the last 10-12 weeks of last season Kane looked the business. And I'm more than happy to have him signed onto our squad. I think he suffers from being unfashionable (an old-fashioned English striker, whatever next?!??!) and not exactly graceful or eye-catching, but I seem to remember Pochettino sniffing around him in January so it's no big surprise that he's being given his chance. If he is no.1 choice in the cups and impresses, and manages 8-10 goals in 20 or so league games, then this time next year we will be looking at one of two things. The prospect having a home-grown 1st choice striker. Or clubs having to stump up £15 million plus to pick our pocket for him. Either way, win-win!! Come on you beautiful Spurs!!!
LilyWhiteHart
LilyWhite ... 'Old fashioned English striker' ... Bobby Smith, Alan Gilzean, Shearer, etc ... sounds good to me! :-)

Another underwhelming act from Spurs!! Has Jan signed his new contract? only positive to me is Lloris signing a new contract, will just have to see what the season delievers.....
Ossie
Arsenal sign Sanchez, Chelsea sign Costa, Liverpool sign everyone, Everton sign Lukaku and we give new contracts to Kane and Rose, it's gonnna be a long season, I just hope the football improves

ossie-us not signing these sort of players has nothing to do with harry kane.its not a case of kane or other signings.

we should be doing both
tarkan mardinCOYS
Here here Geof......I wasn't knocking that type of player at all, I just think it's a factor in a lot of the criticism Kane receives. He is what he is, and he's learning to use what he has. And whilst I can't quite share COYS1717's optimism on Harrys future, I do feel pretty happy having him in our ranks. Come on you beautiful Spurs!!!

Muttley Kane is definitely tactically astute, I would give him a 5 year contract for when he booted the ball off the pitch, best bit of time wasting ever at old Trafford... https://vine.co/v/hVTBZTe5h7j I might not make his wages to high for the skill shown after.
T.H.F.Chris
No Vlad, Jan or Michael tomorrow so it looks like Kaboul, with Dier to get an immediate debut... No Paulinho, Dembele, Chadli or Walker, so the selection is narrowed down by at least 6 players. It'll be a very interesting squad tomorrow..... As I won't be going to the Boleyn, I'll refrain from commenting on the match tomorrow, as I believe you have to be there in the flesh to really know what you're talking about. Just read the official West Ham prematch review, they think paulinho and Bentaleb will start in the midfield two!
Slurms McKenzie
boy oh boy is there rot on VS... How sad to see such vile abuse towards our players...
Mix26
For me Capoue starts, I'm not sure Holtby suits the deeper role and I think either paulinho or Dembele depending who is fitter. Soldado, eriksen and lamela start with lennon probably getting the nod for the left side slot. Noughton, Rose, kaboul and Dier of Verts isn't fit. I'm going out on a limb and say Lloris in goal.
Slurms McKenzie
Lamela with on from the edge of the box across the keeper and low into the bottom right corner, soldado with the assist, Soldado with the second just before half time after a scramble in the box from a Lennon run and snap shot. Eriksen will get the third with ten minutes to go, from a free kick won by Kane who came on for lennon. The third goal is greeted with a chorus of boos and shouts of Big Sam Out. 3-0 Spurs!
Slurms McKenzie
Agree on Capoue Slurms, Holtby is far to pre-occupied with hunting down the ball and his aggression seems to instinctively get worse in the holding role. That said we must give him a start tomoz, we will need him. We look a lot more solid at the back with Davies and I hope he starts over Rose. Ade has to start with Lamela and Eriksen.
Mix26
I see on average 6000 people a week are paying not to watch Arsenal. Apparently Spurs are the only prem club to us a head count through the gates for their official attendance numbers!
Slurms McKenzie
Mix, re ade, I wonder is he fully match fit yet? I certainly expect to see him on the pitch tomorrow what I like about both these players is that they change how we attack dramatically which will make setting up a defense very difficult. I say Rose only because he has had more pre-season football, but I would be happy to see Davies as I think he is better defensively.
Slurms McKenzie
Agree Slurms perhaps leave Ade for the last 20 min of the game. He did look empty after 20 min last week. Davies tends to understand his role far more than Rose, I can understand Rose has picked up his game a hell of a lot but we saw how Wetspam caught us on the break last season. Then again Big Sam has apparently changed his 19th century tactics to entertain the pikeys.
Mix26
entwistle nothing wrong with starting Bentelab. Nothing to do with Dim Sherbert either. MP has previously given roles to a lot of young players. I do however feel that Betelab should not be starting! On the basis that we have better players in mf at this stage unless they are deemed unfit.
Mix26

MAN ON!
Ossie sums the whole underachieving situation up at THFC when he writes, "Arsenal sign Sanchez, Chelsea sign Costa, Liverpool sign everyone, Everton sign Lukaku and we give new contracts to Kane and Rose,". Many thought the signing of VDV was the start of many great signings in the future. But is it was no more than a a lucky piece of last minute bargain basement shopping, like winning a bargain on Ebay at the last second because everyone is offline at that exact moment. I guess Danny Baby got lucky with Bale as well when he thought he was buying a left back, until top 4 Harry had the vision to convert him into one of the most deadly attacking free role midfielders in the world, the most expensive footballer in world football. Remember his goals in the CL for us??? So not only did Harry get backed stabbed by LEWIS for making us a CL club, he also took the dagger for converting a failed left back into Ronaldo's strike partner, making Lewis a fortune. Shame he handed the dosh over to his apprentice who promptly blew it all (with a few mil in change) on his magnificent 7!!! Same old ENIC...
Pele10
entwistle, well Modric has gone for a tidy profit and has not been replaced.. Ericksen has not as yet proved himself as world class so his transfer to Real, United, or Barca is on hold... Patients Danny... Pauli, lovely footballer who was sold the great Gareth Bale is staying lie, is an unhappy Paulista who cant wait to get away along with his mate the mighty Sandro! Ade, well he ain't going no where whilst City are paying half his wages, Lloris is gone next summer which is why the new keeper was singed up now, Verts??? Well it hurts...
Pele10
Kane is a championship player at best.

If Kane is our 3rd choice striker we could be in trouble, this team badly needs another & put Kane 4th choice for desperate times,he`s pants.

Also believe Spurs were mad to announce such a poor deal for an average player with less than 24 hours before the big first season opener. This has put a dampener on it as i`m excited about tomorrow.
Rose & Kane 5 year deals? Keep them quiet because i`d prefer not to know such ridiculous decisions by our club.
Fanny adams
Ou est le match day thread? If we can't be blindly optimistic now when can we be?
StillRickyVilla

tarkan mardinCOYS
Why are we always going for complicated deals. Villareal defender, third party complications. Southampton player, not being allowed to leave.
BigSpursFan
Is our bean counting friend having a "mid life crisis", why is he throwing around 5 year contracts with gay abandon, to at best, moderate "run of the mill" players. Are Rose and/or Kane, likely to be headhunted in the same way as Modric and Bale were, or as Eriksen and Vertonghen are likely to be. If the answer to this question is no, then there is no need, indeed it is pure folly to award them 5 year deals. All it achieves is firstly to make the shifting out of players when upgrade is required difficult, and secondly removes the need for players to stay on their toes, and continually to impress to stay in employment. A 2-3 year contract is the length that should be given to ordinary players. If they are unhappy and feel badly done to, let them seek to better their deal elsewhere, and if they are successful, they won't be difficult to replace.
Frank
Frank, the only problem with 2-3 year contracts is that if the player is any good, he could leave for nothing just after proving himself. With a five year deal, so long as the wages aren't huge, if the player isn't doing too well it would be easier to move then on or, in the worst case scenario, take a small hit on wages.
In-spurs-ational
Frank-it can work the other way. Giving players the security and stability to be at a club that have come through the system may bring the best out of them. I wouldn't say it would be the same for average overseas players who haven't the heart of Tottenham in their system. Rose and kane both been around for sometime and have done the loan deals, may be they need the security that they are wanted and that they need stability mentally so they can knuckle down and 'know' they can give everything.
BigSpursFan
My guess is that we are wanting to do well in all competitions and these players are good enough for early Europa and cup matches and some PL matches. If they don't get enough time on the pitch because they are not good enough they will 'want' to leave, Rose already shown he wants game time and I think Kane would be the same. I don't see them as being the same as Dawson, end of his career looking to stay for testimonial and possibly coaching. Neither do I see these two youngsters as like Ade, on top dollar and not bothered if he plays or not, if he is getting a good deal he sticks it out on the bench or even like last year, out with the youngsters, he is a top player and can afford to do that. Kane and Rose are different. I doubt they are on mega money and they will want to play, if they don't they will want to go and we will get good enough money for them from a mid table PL side. Rose already shown he was happy at Sunderland, having these lads under long contract imo makes it easy for us to sell for more money if they don't make it. Think about it. If they don't get enough games this season due to not being good enough, they will request a move next season, these lads just want to play, they are not going to sit on the bench when they are hardly on huge money are they and let their career go down the pan when they could probably play for teams like Sunderland, QPR, Swansea, or any newly promoted team. They are not big stars and if they do become great players we have them under contract. At the end of their contract they are not even going to be as old as Dawson, so they are not going to be the same as Dawson, if the stories are true. dawson for me wants a testimonial, why not and I think he would like to stay involved at Tottenham in some capacity, retire with us, I understand that. We moan when players don't show loyalty and when they do we moan.
BigSpursFan
IMO, the manager and Chairman are working in unison on these contracts and that it is being seen as a win win situation. Poch must be confident that he can develop these players. Dependent upon the progress they show, a decision can be made further down the line whether to continue down the 'further development' route or 'end of progression' and sell. Whether they play a bit part or 1st choice in the team, they are definitely (IMO) squad players worth keeping.....AS LONG AS we have BETTER 1st eleven. Years of not really giving youth a chance to having several youngsters in the squad is a bit of a culture shock for us all. We have a coach who is renowned for coaching/developing. Inevitable that some will be up in arms about these contracts, but I don't have an issue with it. I said last season that Kane could be a PL striker. Would we rather see players like him develop at Southampton and then pay through the nose at their developed stage? I think Poch is mixing youth/experience well. I also believe our goals will be scored in abundance from all over the pitch. Excited?, I sure am. TW is far from over and there are deals to be done. Let's make judgement at the end of the TW. More so, let's hammer the Hammers! COYS!
Critical_Spur
My guess is Kane and Rose will play parts this season and by the end we will now if they are good enough to stay on. If they are not Poch if he is still the manager will tell them to find other clubs as they don't feature and due to the relative low wages they will be on and the fact that they will want to play they will go to another PL club for similar wages but if we sold now while they haven't lengthy contracts we would get less than if we sell next summer or later imo. Probably by about 5m. English PL lads go for more especially if they are under contract.
BigSpursFan
Critical-AGREE. I am not concerned at these contracts as I said I can see the reasoning. Poch is not stupid, he brought young players through at southampton so he will know if he can improve them. If he does we benefit on and of the pitch (when we sell). Look at the money southampton have got for their youngsters. I personally didn't think Lallana is worth that kind of money but Liverpool obviously did. That could be us in a couple of seasons.
BigSpursFan
I also think there is a bit of psychology involved. We have the best training facilities and yet we don't give the youngsters a fair go due to the demands of wanting top four. Now we will because we have a coach that works well with the youngsters. It will psychologically boosts the confidence of the other youngsters at the club, seeing that these lads have got contracts and we have a manager who will give them a chance. I think Tim had the same idea but problem with him was he went at it like a bull in a china shop, trying to prove a point and alienating international senior players at the same time.
BigSpursFan
BSF, I wonder if the average age of our squad is the lowest in the WHOLE of Europe! I thought it was low under AVB, but Poch seems to have gone a notch lower. Shame as Friedel is the one a) taking up a squad place and b0 tipping the average age! As a 3rd keeper I'd have preferred our youth (can't remember his name) who could've been given game time in early rounds of the cups. COYS!
Critical_Spur
I predict Lennon will get a England call up this coming season
BigSpursFan
CS-Hmm may be and as for Brad it seems silly to me in a way that he takes up a place when we have Vorm. We don't need 3 GK' but I guess football is a business and they want Brad to represent the club and he obviously doesn't want to retire yet so may be the club compromised and gave him an extension to keep him at the club so he can help build our reputation and awareness abroad especially USA
BigSpursFan
"That could be us in a couple of seasons." BigSpursFan

Only problem is, will we still have the same manager in a couple of seasons. Can Levy change the habit of a lifetime and stick with a manager through thick and thin
In-spurs-ational
I actually think lennon, Townsend and Rose all shown improvement this pre season. Lamela did of course and Kane carried on with his end of season work rate. I also think Capoue started to pick up again after a poor end to the last season. I didn't really see much improvement with Soldado and Ade continued as he finished last season. I have not seen much improvement from Carroll which was disappointing and Bentaleb didn't do much but he was late back. Eriksen was off form he hasn't picked up from last season yet. So overall things are better imo already

BSF, your post re the players who have shown improvement and those that have continued where they left of last season.... IMO, the common denominator is Poch. Lennon is playing a different rol, as is Rose (rather he is being made to do what his real job is!), Townsend under control. I am a little surprised that Ade is given the freedom to roam about. Lamela, Lennon, Eriksen, Soldado appear to be building some chemistry. Signs are good. Despite all the changes seen in pre-season, there are defo signs of improvement. Even more excited! COYS!

Wish we'd stop all the bashing of Levy and Enic and all the usual moanings and groanings about how terrible we are and how much Chelsea, Arsenal, ManU and Liverpool are doing more than us. As far as i remember they and we can only field 11 players at a time and I haven't seen one player purchased by those teams who significantly improves them over what or who they put on the field last year.

As a matter of fact Liverpool with the loss of Suarez have to have been seriously affected negatively despite the purchases. In the meantime we have a few players who will finally be coached by a man who knows how to really coach and encourage and lift players up and that is bound to improve those players who many have been calling "flops". I look forward to a really sweet season of exciting football. I am not going to allow myself to slip into the morass of what could have been if only....COYS!!

jvd, you are obviously delusional. Haven't you seen the current league table. All those teams are above us in the league as we sit in 18th place and in a relegation spot. MP out :)
In-spurs-ational
JVD I agree, we have signed more players then United and tackled two of our three problem areas, united have a massive amount of squad building to do to get back in contention. Liverpool have sold their best player and a proven match winner to sign squad fillers and bench warmers. Arsenal have signed a good winger and strengthened the only part of their squad they were strong in, chelsea spent big on a striker and creative midfielder to play defensive football their best bit of business was shifting Luiz! City will be a juggernaut and everton have spent big money to get last seasons squad in place so have not improved at all! Top four and a cup for Spurs

Block D Spurs, The truthful FACT regarding Harry Redknapp's tenure at THFC was that he was fired by Joe Lewis, with 1 year still remaining on his THFC contract, after for the second time in his 3 full seasons at the club, finished the season in a Champions League qualifying position...

entwistle, I thought the one job that all coaches worldwide were respected for applying for, was to be coach the national team of their country. He did not court a job at any other football club in the world did he? I respected Harry had the balls to go for that nightmare job. But anyway he didn't get the job, but he did get us top 4 for the second time in 4 seasons, and was promptly FIRED, by the football mercenary, who is not prepared to fund a CL level club...
Pele10
entwistle, you say "we supported him through a significant health scare, after we stood by and supported him through a very high profile tax evasion/fraud case." Supported him? He was fired at the end of the very season he had the heart problems, went through the tax evasion/fraud (which he was found not guilty), and he still got us top 4 without being given any funding for the team that season...

Supporting a head coach is what the Arsenal board do! At THFC it's been 10 coaches in 15 seasons... Says it all!!!
