'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Tottenham Hotspur vs. Queens Park Rangers.

Welcome back Harry! Glenn, Joe and Kevin! Enjoy your day at the Lane, if not the result!

It`s Poch`s first game at the Lane so no spoiling the party!! And, if its good bye Dawson for the signing of Sevilla defender Federico Fazio in the next few days, I sincerely hope he gets a great testimonial.

Momentum........no matter how pedestrian the opposition, winning breeds confidence!
However, our old frailties at the back showed again.... West Ham were the better side for much of the game and Noble's spot miss let us off the hook. Poch will also be a relieved man after we were again outplayed in large periods on Thursday against Limassol. The most worrying aspect of our game right now is how Kaboul got bossed by Cole against the spammers and Rose was being skinned by Downing.

With Kyle Walker's still having pelvic problems and Naughton suspended, Ryan Fredericks' has had no game time that means Dier will probably be moved to right-back. That means Kaboul partnering with Verts and Rose at the left and Dier on the right.

Adebayor, Christian Eriksen, Younes Kaboul, Aaron Lennon and Etienne Capoue are available having been rested from the 2-1 Europa League play-off win over AEL.
Against AEL on Thursday Dier looked confident and strong at CB. Vert made his first appearance of the season and looked a little short of match fitness. Dier was arguably the stronger out of the two in the middle of the defence.

Davies, however, was weak defensively on his debut, letting his man get past him for the AEL goal, and unable to stop attackers getting shots off on another couple of occasions. So our back four looks incomplete and vulnerable.

With Dawson out of favour and Chiriches apparently on his way to Roma our CB choices are limited which is not ideal with a front two of Austin and Remy for the Hoops. We should be prepared for a manic time in front of goal, especially if Remy is coming to WHL, he may want to perform in front of his new home fans.

Paulinho needs his bumps felt! He failed to exert his authority on the AEL game and also lost the ball in the lead up to the AEL goal. We moved the ball around much better once Chadli and Dembele came on and Paulho came off. Townsend is still trying to do everything himself and he has to learn to distribute the ball. Dembele, however, is starting to look good and he should get a start against the hoops.

I think Poch is not going to rotate the squad for PL and EL he is going to pick the individual players depending on the opposition.

Poch will know that QPR are still feeling their way back into the Prem. Their record in the Prem is not good: QPR have now won just four of their last 40 Premier league matches and have taken just one point from seven opening weekend matches in the competition.

Tottenham have won eight of their last ten Premier League home games;  QPR have lost seven of their previous ten Championship away matches. QPR are without a clean sheet in seven away games.

Harry knows only too well how costly a poor start can be after a 16-game winless run at the beginning of their last top-flight campaign in 2012-13. Harry has signed Rio Ferdinand, Steve Caulker, Jordon Mutch and Leroy Fer, as well as bringing in Chile international pair Mauricio Isla and Eduardo Vargas on loan to strengthen the squad but against Hull, although they had the lion`s share of the possession, they were still not clinical enough in front of goal.

I expect Harry to play: Green, Dunne, Ferdinand, Caulker, Isla, Traore, Barton, Fer, Mutch, Remy and Austin. Eduardo Vargas is ineligible due to work permit issues.

With Joey Barton lurking around to break the odd leg or two and the fragility of our defence I expect Poch to put some steel in the middle of the park to protect our back four. We know enough about QPR`s CB`s, they ain`t the fastest so I hope Soldado, Eriksen and Ade can turn them with Lamela and Lennon providing some service as well as some width.

It will be an interesting day with the former management team sitting in the away dug out and some former players coming back, it will be something of an Old Boys Reunion.
On paper we should flatten the "Gr`s" and to get three wins on the bounce as well would help settle the squad, the nerves and build some momentum.

I got a bad feeling about this one. I can just see Remy scoring and ole Arry smiling his head off as the Gr's nick a goal at the death. We need someone to neutralise Joey the axeman barton

Team for QPR, Lloris, Dier, Kaboul, Vertonghen, Rose, Capoue, Bentaleb, Eriksen, Lamela, Lennon and Ade. That's what I think MP will go with, I'd prefer Soldado and Sandro instead of Ade and Bentaleb. Going today, hope Harry gets a good reception but more importantly we get 3 points.
RAF Yid
Over 30 years in management, a win ratio of 40%. 1 FA Cup, 1 Intertoto and one Div 1 trophy in over 3 decades of being a manager. Most over-hyped manager in history. Enough about Harry, there's only one legend coming to WHL today and that is Hoddle. Great to see him back at the lane.

As for the game, Poch must have over 20 players vying for 11 shirts. Let's hope it fires the team to win at home.
muttley
Muttley, it will perhaps be more interesting to see who he leaves out? Only 18 but we have at least 24 players fit today.
RAF Yid
A good win today could elevate us to the dizzy heights of top four on the ladder. Nice of Everton and Arsenal to draw. Be just as nice if Pool and City draw tomorrow!
Geofspurs
Picking the team is like picking the lottery numbers ... almost impossible. It's much easier to pick the score!

Forget the Ice Bucket Challenge, I'll drink a pint of ice cold cider for every Spurs goal scored..... By 3.30 pm this afternoon, I'm gonna be totally off my face! Up the Spurs!
MAN ON!
We should have too much for QPR today, although I don't think we're going to have it all our own way. There is always an unknown quantity when ex players and managers visit and QPR have that in spades today. Providing the ref gets a grip on Barton early I don't see him causing too many problems, I do worry that one "welcome to the game son" challenge on Lamella may cause him to vanish though. All things being equal, I foresee a 2-1 victory with Erikson and Soldado scoring for us. COYS
devils-advocaat
Oh and I look forward to seeing Levy doing the ice bucket challenge after being nominated by AVB. Shame it's not waterboarding but you can't have everything eh!
devils-advocaat
There are two ways QPR can achieve a result at WHL. 1. Sit deep with 10 players and hope we do not score, counter-attacking 2. Come with guns blazing with high pressuring our ball possessor at every oportunity, because everyone should already know that if we are pressed high we struggle. I hope Harry chooses neither! COYS!!!
Jables
Funny all the soldado expectations... He was dote last season and won't be any better this season, I'm expecting him to be an unused sub again today and will be gone by the weekend! Fingers crossed.... 3-1 spurs today, Lamela Eriksen & Ade COYS
LuvWhites
Lloris... Dyer, Kaboul, Jan, Rose... Capoue, Bentaleb... Lennon, Eriksen, Lamela... Adebayor.
MAN ON!
Dream on, you delusionist lot! Presently, Spurs are no more than a mediocre team. They'll struggle against ANY team. They are weak in defensive midfield and hopeless in defence and struggling up front. For all the pre-season talk of needing to strengthen the squad, Poch has done very little in this regard - he just brought in a couple of AVERAGE players, that's all. All summer I've been fed up with all the media talking up Spurs getting such and such a star. All to fizzle out in the end. Maybe Levy has got Poch's hands tied well and proper. What is worse is that now Poch is dismantling by selling Vlad, who probably is his BEST defender and most suited to his much-vaunted high-line policy. Goodbye Spurs.
dagobert
dagobert... I love your optimism... Always good to see a fellow Spurs supporter get behind the team. All we need is 9 more Vlad's and we'll be good to go.
MAN ON!
Shame Rose started against Spam...he was poor but that heaped pressure on Davies all to evident during his debut....now we have two LB's with issues...Rose may get the nod but he has to stop the cross! I'd go with Dembele and Capoue in the middle...up top it's difficult -Ade for his presence or Soldado for his movement and trickery?...I might just lean towards Soldado, confidence getting there and should be rewarded for his goal...Lamela right...and get this I'm almost tempted to pick Andros for the left...he will really want to do well in this one but I might just save his adrenaline for the bench...so a toss up between Chadli and Kane but again rewarding good play and link up with Soldado and Lamela Kane gets the nod....I'd start him off the left and have Eriksen pulling the strings but if Eriksen doesn't sharpen up he'd get the hook and depending on the game move Lamela or Kane in behind Soldado bringing on pace (lennon or Andros) if they are chasing or a goal threat (Ade/chadli) if they are sitting deep....we could also push Dembele up as Capoue should have it covered.

Agree with your team there MAN ON! Think that's the line up we will see. Though would love holtby in there somewhere
special too
dagobert- yep Levy controls the purse strings - always has...no point blaming Poch he was hired as a yes man....he is only a coach and will have to work with what he gets....(sure he'll make suggestions but...)
shedboy2
Their potential line up doesn't look that bad by the names, though pretty aging...not an easy game I fear
special too
Jables.. yes we are still not able to deal with opposition playing the pressing game better than us...were pressed by Limasol and suffered in the 1st half and a bit in 2nd. From what i saw on the terrible internet link !! Maurico has to make sure we contain QPR, as Harry will go with the counter attack game plan, using Remy speed..
Block D Spurs
shedboy2.. I think I might prefer your selection. I'd swap the positions of Kane and Eriksen, although I don't think it matters.
MAN ON!
QPR have some good players but what are they like as a team? How much is MP still experimenting? I wonder how much influence Glen will have on Harry's team and tactics? How many goals will we win by?
MAN ON!
Jables ... There's really only one way to win a game - one team has to score more than the other team.
Geofspurs
special too... It's the team I think Poch will pick but I'll be happy with one or two different choices. Dembele for Nabil and Roberto for Ade?
MAN ON!
Last season’s home record left a lot to be desired and has to be improved ... starting today. We, of course, also need to maintain our away record from last season.
Geofspurs
Are we still able to use Glen as a sub?!
Geofspurs
Glenn can step into our dugout as interim head coach when MP is fired at half-time.
MAN ON!
Man on they will interchange but I would like Eriksen to have a little more influence on games and Kane will work going backwards...That said I think we'll see your team but I think it's disjointed...Ade drops too deep into Eriksens space so the 3 supporting all bump into each other, Bentaleb doesn't offer enough in either direction for me, Lennon is not very good on the left and doesn't have enough goals in him for the formation even when he swaps flanks...it's a team of individuals and lacks balance...they are good individuals and will beat a lot of teams...but they are not a unit to bring back the swagger or compete for top4....
shedboy2
Shedboy2, I like your selection too
MalaysiaSpur
Geofspurs... Our home record did improve in the last part of the season but... don't mention the stats.

Yidmarks
We need ADE up top as Rio and Caulker are big boys.

Dembele is ready to start and looks hungry. I think he will thrive next to Capoue.
Kane, Eriksen & Lamela are must-starts.

COYS
Yidmarks
Yidmarks... Good point re Ade but he doesn't tend to play very central to the attack. (I think Kane could trouble them centrally)... We could overcome their height but lack of speed at the back, by keeping the ball to feet with some quick movement and interplay off Roberto. If QPR play defensively deep then there may be too much emphasis on playing the long ball out to Ade. Not MP's game I know, so hopefully we can out manoeuvre them in midfield and catch them on the back-foot.
MAN ON!
All the teams suggested above look okay ... that's the bloody problem!!
Geofspurs
Rex ... Well, we have to blame someone! Some people don't seem to understand that goals against us aren't always someone’s fault ... some are just good, well taken, goals!
Geofspurs
Geofspurs : "There's really only one way to win a game - one team has to score more than the other team."

Try telling that to Legia Warsaw
In-spurs-ational
I've had a change of heart... We should play Remy, Fazio and Mussachio, schneiderlin and Bony. Stick Wellbeck and Rodriguez on the bench.
MAN ON!
We have at least a game of football today, with yet another player linked to us, Franco Baldini wants to bring Swiss international centre back Fabian Schar to Spurs this summer and watched the 22-year-old in action for Basle at Sion last week, reports the Mirror. With Vlad looking likely to join Roma, and Fazio still up in the air, Fazio never featured in last nights 1-1 draw with Valencia, http://www.marca.com/en/football/2014_15/laliga/matchday_1/sev_val/online.html and Welbeck declaring (if true) he would be up for joining us, then what of the Remy to us media hype, if he starts today is that on the back burner? COYS SPURS put on over on churchill, oh yes, yes, yes, tell Arry the england job is up for grabs, that should be enough to take his mind of QPR, it worked well with us.

As i have a massive dislike for Harry Redknapp i hope we batter QPR today.
I`d rather lose to Arsenal than lose to QPR so i hope we wipe that smug grin off his face with a great performance,& a win by a fine margin.Kill 2 birds with one stone & i`ll be enjoying my beer immensely with victory today, just like we did with West Ham last week.Should never have won that against West Ham but we did & it tasted sweeter as it was never on the cards & it pi$$ed West Ham right off because they know that.
I`m going Spurs to win 4-1 against QPR.

Rex, so true about Davies.
RAF Yid
Rex, the press seem obsessed with Spurs. The other clubs don't seem to get the coverage we get about trivial and less than factual information. I will take any win today. Happy to start with 2/2 wins, get some momentum going and let Lamela build some confidence before we play our traditionally early season game against the goons. COYS.
vicspur
I don't dislike Harry but I still want to beat the hell out of QPR. I like Hoddle more but I still want to beat the hell out of QPR! Up the Lilywhites!
MAN ON!
As those in the know constantly remind us that Harry was a hack, with no plan B and failed to get the best out of our top 3 squad, we should hammer QPR by 5 or 6 given that we now have a master strategist in charge and a squad full of Top, if not quite Top Top players and Harry has a group of pensioners to manage. Anything less than 4-0 will be failure.
Harry-Kari
Harry doesn't park the bus, he will try and win it today, so some room for us, lets not be wasteful with our chances and the 3pts are ours, hopefully Barton to get sent off early, he won't be able to resist fouling Lamela. COYSS!!

My team choice again bar Chadli for Lennon. I'm very happy to know that Poch has been reading my emails and is following my expert advice. Harry has not. I told him 442 and he's gone for a Hoddle like 3-5-1-1! Up the White Hart Lane!

I think Harry has bought well, with Ferdinand and Caulker at the back, and Fer and Mutch in MF, and will always be a threat with Austin and Remy up front, and of course possibly the best signing of the lot, Glen Hoddle, who has struggled with management jobs, but is probably the best, and most knowledgeable and advanced thinking, English coach of his generation. He will certainly nurture and develop any talent he can find within their squad.

Slurms, I'm on the verge of getting too enthusiastic, so I needed to rein myself in a bit reminding myself that it is qpr, not chelscum or citeh. but god, they're playing well today.
Falstaff the Fool
Rose sitting back at LB Veronghen with so great timed tackles and bursts forward with the ball. Chadli looking sharp, Lamela a real standout player, Dier very composed at RB this boy is going to be awesome! Erisken a little anonamous but thats okay when the others are on fire and he can still threaten from set pieces! Ade needs to get forward more and thrust his Left wing a bit more. Capoue and Bentaleb have choked the life out of QPR's midfield. Capoue caought out by one long ove rthe top ball but other then that has been solid.
Slurms McKenzie
Falstaff I know dude I can't keep the grin off my face either!

As I wrote before the first kick, welcome back Harry. Indeed.
Falstaff the Fool
Ade finally gets a ball in the box and doesn't convert from 4 yards out, Erisken starting to come alive, Lamela and Chadli are pulling the strings! I think Kane or Soldado in the second half could get real joy!
Slurms McKenzie
For me - Chadli proved his worth to us in Benfica, just needs a run of games, but delivers goals and assists. Lamela had talent, but clearly had much to prove still and this week more than any he has done so, in a very impressive way. You were saying Ruud gullet - humble pie on MOTD tonight.....

Tremendous performance so far, congrats to Lamela in particular, and Chadli. The guy doing the match reporting on SSN is drooling about Spurs performance, and suggests there could be a cricket score. Quite a WHL baptism for Pochettino, hopefully he is starting to prove many including myself wrong, along with Lamela and Chadli. I will be delighted to admit I was wrong if Lamela becomes a force.

Wonder stuff from Spurs, I take it back, everything I said about the "Spurs Way" you can play good attractive football and slaughter someone at the same time. Barring Dier, this is the same team that started last season and was available for most of it. Where were these performances AVB and Sherwood?? Hmmm

Qpr are all over the shop with their new system, but credit to the boys, some of our play has been fantastic, the true test is next week.

fantastic performance so far. lamela has been fabulous, and so impressive without the ball too, the way he presses is so great to see. very promising signs for the pochettino era. can't believe I didn't put dier in my fantasy football team :)
Guernman
I have a gripe. We are not being ruthless enough. Its games like this that we need to be more ruthless and get more goals. End of season goal difference can make a difference. Now its second half HR will change things and make it difficult for us so we ought to be learning to take advantage when we can get as many goals as possible, and that was in that half. If we had moved the ball quicker while QPR are all over the place we probably could have had a couple more. Other than that very good football against a poor QPR

That half was superb. However, it certainly showed what we can be if we can upgrade Adebayor. He's missed his chances and not got in the dangerous positions. The football is sublime and it should be more, but most impressively is our work ethic. The front four are running themselves into the ground to such an extent that Bentaleb and Capoue as dm's have not been overly exerted. We are winning the ball high up the pitch and showing some great football. Credit to Rosé, who has also been excellent going forward. s some have said, need to start the same in second half, same fight, same tempo and we could get five. I never had any enthusiasm for Harry, Slurms. He always struck like a crack addict who always went for the immediate thrill at the expense of long term health problems. I was happy to see his backside in spite of the CL season, which was the short term thrill. But the second half of the season total collapse we saw for both of his last two seasons told me that he needed to go faster rather than slower. Wouldn't mind an evening in a pub with the old reprobate, though. I'm sure he'd sling some entertaining tales with a few pints in him.

All told, what a wonderful day in North London today. Yesterday the two rivals Arse and the Toffees spilt four points between them. A nice weekend it has been.

I really enjoyed the game, great result, great performance. Lamela was superb, Chadli took his goals well, Bentaleb and Capoue dominating in CM and Eriksen is such a clever player. I really liked the way that when the players had the ball, their first instinct was to play it forward. Lots of nice interplay and pressing from the 3 behind Ade. Very positive display today, not much needed in the TF window. Well done Poch, I'm now looking forward to the Liverpool game.

Hard to know if we took our foot off the gas second half or if the tactical changes made it more difficult for us to play through them!

It was very obvious that Lloris and the back four were under instructions not to lump it forward, Verts seem a lot happier with this approach and probably explains why Dawson is frozen out!

Always difficult being so far in front at HT, our movement, passing and hard work closing them down made them look ordinary, a great result and 4 goals to go with the 3pts. MOM LAMELA for me. Love him as a player and was pleased when we signed him from Roma, he is a real footballing talent, great to have him, it's like a new signing after his first season, suffering a long term back injury.

re: Lamela's injury. Slurms, I never was clear about what the supposed injury was with Lamela last season. But he surely looks decent now. As to the two numpties, Poch seems to have reunited the myriad pieces of humtpy dumpty. What a difference a decent manager can make.

I agree Vic Spur the best he can do now is plateau and just stay where we are but its more likely that we will slip down the table under Pochettino!

Falstaff so far he has shown that the arguments about who was Better AVB or Sherwood were a waste of time!
Slurms McKenzie
Pressing in second half was excellent and more like I thought Poch would have us playing from the start in games. Im delighted with that however as my biggest concern has always been that you cant play high press for 90mins unless you have exceptional ball retention. Very fluid shape but with a solid base and I thought our 2 DMs were exceptional in that first 45. I wanted to reserve judgment on Dier until I see him under the cosh but he looks an absolute steal. Very noticeable that Rose kept his shape more first half, was obviously told at half time to penetrate in the second with the space in behind.

Falstaff the Fool
good all round performances Rose who was awful last week had a good game and only gave away 1 sloppy free kick to remy a vast improvement. Dier looks so calm and relaxed and it was excellent to see a RB cutting out the ball with a header...another goal to settle the nerves, looks a real player...Lamela and Chadli showed how the flanks are supposed to operate in this formation - no need for head down running when they are quick over the first yard, know what they are supposed to do and can do it! Capoue is a rock...and can distribute really well....there were some warning signs there though..QPR were very poor yet could have had 3 goals from set pieces! and Bentaleb can't give the ball away so cheaply at the start of games against 'Pool we'll get punished if we don't tighten up...
shedboy2
I wonder if Dier shares Vertonghen's determination to only play CB if possible, because based on his performances so far I would say that he could easily displace Walker for the RB position. He is clearly a greater goal threat, while defensively he reads the game better.
Guernman
If Levy can cash in on Dier before the window shuts, he could make a handsome profit.
MAN ON!
Brilliant performances, but yes Shedboy 2, warning signs on set pieces. Caulker could have had a hat-trick. Looked like zonal marking
voltspur
shedboy - agree, we still look weak from corners. As for Bentaleb, I'm so happy that we have Poch looking after him now. He will hopefully do a better job putting him in, benching him and resting him. Also, if guys like Dembele and even Schneiderlin are there then the competition for places will be intense. I was pretty convinced Sandro would go this window. I'm starting to wonder whether Paulinho will as well now I see Poch's trust in Bentaleb.

One other thought though. Yes, we could have conceded 2 or 3 goals from set pieces but what may have happened if we had a better finisher than Adebayor up top today. If we hadn't known Chadli was an attacking midfielder we could have been forgiven for thinking he's a number 9 in the way he took his goals. Adebayor just doesn't look the part and I'd still love to see someone like a fit Benteke in a Spurs shirt in Poch's system.
muttley
Excellent performance helped by some woeful defending by QPR. Lloris, easiest day of the season, a couple of minor saves but very comfortable. Dier, our goal scoring right winger. Superb, he looked as strong as an Ox, couple of big tackles, positioning not bad either. Verts and Kaboul led the team well, only one run by Phillips to think about. Rose looks good, I sometimes worry that he's a bit of a "heads gone" player but was excellent today.
RAF Yid
Wish the site would update the table so we can be shown as No 1 on here.

In midfield Chadli May get the headlines with 2 excellent goals but Lamela worked his backside off. This pressure game was typified by him, excellent in possession he played very well. Eriksen, good again, Bentaleb solid and Capoue looks a better player already than last season. He was big and strong but read the game well. Adebayor played well, I'm not his biggest fan but at times he is unplayable, I just wish it was more often. MP excellent, tactics spot on. The only comment about the subs was that Dembele looked "fitter" he looks like he has lost a pound or two. Time will tell. We are top ....

It 's been a long time since I've last seen Spurs playing as a unit, as a team...as 11 players hungry for the ball and unselfish...willing to give a better positioned team-mate a chance to score. Totally Pochettino's way...great philosophy to play under. So many good performances it sounds unfair to pick a single player. Chadli was great...and so was Lamela. Capoue was immense and so was Adebayor. Even Rose is playing well. What to say about Dier ?? The lad looks like an U-19 player, neverthless has scored twice and played a superb right-back role. Erikssen was Ok, but not on one of his best days. Only Kaboul seemed somehow out of frame: Slow and poor positioned when it mattered. I don't mind being taken as underdogs or whatever as long as we keep showing grit, resilience and flair like we did today. COYS !!!!
AlexSpur
Yes, we do need to tighten up but this was only our second league game, first at home so I will enjoy the positives - we look a different team. I like the new formation and the work ethic Poch has instilled - even the pressing game seems to be planned switching on and off to suit. Biggest positive for me is that it is already evident that players will have to fight to get a place in the starting 11.
Durbanspur
What a fantastic performance. The front 4 worked hard for the cause and made Capoue's job look easy. Not keen on zonal marking. Much prefer pick up neareat player and don't give them any space. Dawson has gone to Hull
Love totty
Best of luck Dawson. In truth a best move for all concerned
Fanny adams
I think it`s for all to see that Lennon just does not do enough offensively & he needs to be moved on.

Really happy for Lamela because as shown today the best form of attack is defence, the more we attack the less Lloris has to do.Nice one Chadli keep that going.
Also Dier is already looking like Buy of the season,as with any player consistency is the key.

Hope the news about Wellbeck is untrue because any attacking player who goes a whole year scoring only one goal has no place in this team.
Fanny adams
If the rumours about Dawson are true I wish him all the best. Spurs player to the heart but his best days are past him and this move is surely a win-win-win situation for all parts concerned. About Wellbeck, I´m not so sure he would be a waste of resources if we could also move Lennon on. Wellbeck played for Fergurson´s United and that kind of winning, never say die mentality would surely help us in tough away matches.
AlexSpur
My view from Upper East Stand. We looked good in first half..a bit easing off 2nd half. Lamela confidence growing.. Erricson a bit rusty in missing passes, and his free kick. Chadi well positioned, both his goals. Dier, what a young player he is, fantastic. defends and can score..bargain £4m. Rose has improved,.. Kabul & Verts ok, Hugo not much to do.. Capue CD good, covered Kaboom when he went forward. Nabil is still below what we need, he did not look around and see the pass he should have made..Ade did as expected, hold the ball up, and took his chance from a good pass by Rose. So I'm well pleased with this result !! Onto Thursday game, looking for another score line like this... COYS

Went to the game and. I never overreact but that's the best football I've ever seen us play. Chadlis third goal had 48 passes!!! 48!!! That's incredible. The front four roaming were majestic. Wonderful wonderful stuff. The player ratings I'm about to give I believe are not an over exaggeration... Lloris- n/a. Had naff all to do lol. Dier- 9/10. I've never seen a defender who jockeys his man, keeps his eye on the ball and times his tackles so superbly an with aggression. His pressing is also phenomenal and another goal to boot. I really don't know why I haven't given him a perfect ten... Kaboul- 7/10 getting back to the old Younes. Never really troubled an own everything in the air. Well done. Vertonghen -8/10 for me the only reason he ain't a nine is cos I thought dier was so good. Back to his best. Wonderful calmness and composure on the ball and read the game superbly snuffing out any chances before they could arise. Rose-9/10 the best way I could describe Rose right now is he has grown from a boy to a man. He now defends solidly an breaks forward at the right time. Plays with so much aggression and his technique seems to be a lot more consistent. Capoue-8/10 shielded us brilliantly and plays his role in the team to perfection constantly making up as the third CB. Great passing and toughness in the tackle. Bentaleb-8/10 plays with so much confidence. Does his job every well. Lamela-9/10 oh my this is the real Lamela. His flair, movement and skill is great. He's very tough as well shrugging people off who try to tackle him. The amount of times he won the ball high up through his pressing was admirable. His pass to Chadli for the third was exquisite. What a player. Eriksen-7/10 it's weird. After being our go to guy last year he's now almost taken a backseat. Still some very nice touches and movement with a wonderful free kick. Although he wasn't our best player still a very important member of that roaming three. Chadli-8/10 ahhhh so this is why every manager you have played for rates you so highly. Very very imtelligent footballer who took his goals really well. Really hope he keeps this up as I like him. Adebayor-8/10 well done Ade you worked hard and linked up really well and got a goal to show for it. Well pleased for you. As for the subs I'm not going to bother I've gone in long enough.

Didn't see the game due to BT failing to connect my new Internet service this week, in spite of 3 weeks notice. Sounds like an impressive display from the lads, but next week will tell us more. Good news is that I still won't have an Internet service next week either so the omens must be good for another thrashing (of Liverpool of course!). Well done lads and Poch.
Harry-Kari
Alexspur - not surprised we're linked with another homegrown player in Wellbeck. Carroll put out on loan, Dawson linked away and no firm signs that we'll get Schneiderlin or Rodriguez who are HG's. Townsend also not in match day squad. At the moment we have 5 HG fullbacks and I expect either Naughton to go or Fredericks put out on loan reducing to 4. We then have Lennon, Townsend, Mason, Ceballos and Obika of which we would need 4 of them to have a 25 man squad. Makes you wonder whether Poch will even bother with 25 senior men when he started with 2 HG's today in Dier and Bentaleb and bought another on one, Kane. Wellbeck is a Poch type player though, he'll work hard all day and has pace to burn. Just not sure about him as an out and out centre forward though. I'm not convinced Utd would let him go either.

Chelmspur
Brooksy good to get a report from the game, that's the problem with not seeing it live and that's the movement players make running off the ball, just going back one, the movement Soldado made for Kane in mid-week getting onto Lamela pass to score. Having just watched Man U and Sunderland, how many times did they both give the ball away, I still can't decide, but is just me or does Downing or O'Shea look like a Paddy McGuinness double aka Phoenix Nights, Rooney is Peter Kay that's for sure. Welbeck came on as sub holds the ball up well and would be good if we added him into our squad, put in some effort when he came on, dead ringer for Grace Jones.
spu 4 life
Muttley, so far I am not against welcoming Welbeck to WHL as a squad player, a hard-working one that could allow us to free Lennon. Maybe he does not want to come but if United needs to make room for Di Maria he might not have other options than leave. Still think, however, that our defense cries out for improvement. Dawson and Kaboul are not long starters for a side pushing to a Top $ finish.
AlexSpur
With respect guys, Frank's old school and was watching before when we won the double, so I think he knows a good footballing side when he see's one, I got the back end of that side and not really knowing that much about football, apart from the way they moved the ball around, lucky for me I watched Jimmy Greaves score a shed load for SPURS, when I see a goalscorer half as good as him, I will let you know.
spu 4 life
Nice to see a human side of Levy with the ice-bucket challenge and his nomination of Perez was first class. Well done Daniel.
Harry-Kari
Naughton won't be going, not with Walker still not fit, but he looks like he will be cover for Dier, who was a master class for our scouting set up, after next week it's a break for international week, wonder if woy will be adding Dier to the squad, my money is on a YES.
spu 4 life
Alex, agree we are still short at CB. Happy to let Dawson and Chiriches go but they need replacing, even if he has a good season Kaboul has only 30 starts in him. Vertonghen is great but we need others. Dier, yep but he's young, same with Fryers. Not sure about the boy from Sevilla, how about Toby Alderweireld?

With some people it almost feels like compliments through gritted teeth. Comical. I Thought verts looked like the kind of player barca would be linked with. U can argue he wasn't busy but along with 2 excellent dms we never allowed anything to stick for qpr so they just couldn't build any play. We gave their cm the kind of going over that we had far too often last year. A good old fashioned shoeing! Now for the acid test next Saturday and a team who will attempt to do exactly the same to us. Can't wait to see how Mopo fairs against Rogers after he schooled both our managers last year. Big relief for me is that it hasn't just been all out high press. We've picked our moments well and haven't had the high line issues we had early with AVB.
gatch75
So the days of Glory and cock-sureness have returned! Capoui was superb and really snuffed out any attacks from QPR. Lamela obviously got out of the right side of bed this morning and gave an excellent demonstration of what defending from the front means; the amount of times he dispossessed and generally closed down QPR before they even got the ball out of their half was commendable. Special mention goes out to Lloris who was on fire today; Alert, switched on, commanding and alert. At one point he even had to save a shot on goal, and he did! The amount of goals conceded indicates how well he did today.

Also, Why was Hoddle sitting in the stands? Surely his place was in the dugout. Was it out of respect for Spurs or something?

Can't believe some of you guys saying Erikson wasn't having a good game? Did you see some of his silky touches? Yes he misplaced a few passes today but he could probably feel we were in full control. Rose had his best game for us, Capoue was great and Lamela will get better with every game he plays, you can't buy class, you are born with it. Personally I thought Bentaleb was our weakest player, gave the ball away three or four times, against top opposition we will be punished, the boy is a good player and will get better but we need to choose the games he plays in. COYS.
ItalianYiddo
Although we have 2 clean sheets, a goal difference of 5 and 6 points to our name, which is a great start to the season, we have only played the likes of QPR and West Ham. I'm glad we're picking up points where we should, but the real test comes when we play Liverpool.

Very pleased that we're going into such a big game on the high of such a good performance but hopefully we do a job at home to Limassol without it taking too much out of the players and approach the game focused and fatigue free!

While I'm posting, what do people think regarding potential signings of Remy / Welbeck. Would they be improvements on Soldado, Adebayor and Kane if there is any truth behind the rumours and would they fit into the team well?
RyanHotSpur
Fantastic news that Danny Wellbeck wants to come to Spurs.I hope we sign him because really could do with a striker who can go a whole year scoring just ONE goal.We have Aaron Lennon who does that,so the more goal shy attacking players the better. If we don`t score much we`ll easily get top 4.

"We`re going to score,no more than you,Tottenham"

We showed today it`s all about being on the front foot & putting the opposition on the back foot. With poor attacking players you`re playing right into the other teams hands, make them worry about you not you worry about them.If you can keep a team on the back foot you give your own defence & goalkeeper an easy game.

Dier a defender who has scored 2 goals in 2 games is a fine example of this,it allows others to push on,even Kaboul got in on the action but this is not possible if you`re constantly getting pushed back.
Well impressed with everything about Spurs today. There is no such thing as parking the bus, parking the bus is a lame excuse for a poor offence.Defending in great numbers should be an early XMAS present for superb offensive players & manager strategy. It always gets used when your team don`t score, but when you do it doesn`t get mentioned, that`s having your cake & eating it.

RyanHotSpur - a win is a win.... so enjoy the moment ... I do not want Welbeck and not sure of Remy - if one to be signed - prefer the latter...
Highgatespur
I don't think Welbeck offers anything more than Adebayor to be honest. Ok so he is English which makes him homegrown, fills a quota I guess, but I don't think he is a natural goalscorer. His attributes as a forward in my opinion doesn't add anything further to what we already have.

Remy on the other hand is a striker I think could bring something different. He's a little quicker on the turn, agile on the ball with an eye for goal. We didn't see much at all of him today, but he severely lacked any sort of support from the midfield. I sort of hope the Welbeck transfer is rumour, but I wouldn't be too sad to see him replace Adebayor / Soldado.
RyanHotSpur
Highgatespur I know what you mean about quality, Dembele appears to have, but as Hoddle pointed out last season, spurs lacked a continuity player. Releasing the ball a split second quicker than others, Mikel is master at it, so is Bentelab. They sometimes just help the ball on its way. Dembele likes to dribble and take two/three touches. If he could do one touch sometimes he would be better. The problem is you beat a player two or three times in the same move by holding on to the ball allows the opposition to regroup as sideways passers often let happen. The kid could frustrate opposition as he passes one touch enters the space and is immediately available for the return or to block any attack. He keeps it simple.

Highgate a win is a win and these type of wins are important. I don't disagree this. Every game is important but the real test comes when you play your rivals. We have harder games to come, and I look forward to seeing if we can still perform in the same manner. Hopefully it's the case. Really excited for Liverpool.

Highgatespur
IY - I think they could have hit the ground running sooner, but to be fair, Lamela and Capoue were injured for far too much of the season to show us any of what they could do. I seem to remember Chadli being limited for a place too. I still think Soldado was money badly spent however. We all saw hints that they were great players, goals and performances in UEFA showed that. Had they have been for last season, I'd argue we could have stole 5th, 4th at a push.

Dier has been a great addition and I have a sneaky feeling Rose is working his butt off to keep Davies out of the picture.
RyanHotSpur
TE, I think we'll have to make sure that it is hard for Dier to leave the club in the future by winning the PL, CL, FA Cup , CC and the rest several times over in the next few years. What a player!!! And no ITK predicted it!! Take care.... COTMS!!!

Reports Dawson deal to Hull agreed in principle, perhaps we will now see how much Dawson actually wants to play. Was in the Park Lane today and I was a bit worried before the game that we had no width as the team was announced. We did play narrow as every time we came inside, but the movement into the wide areas was superb. Those saying Ade was too much in wide areas were wrong as the interchange with the other front 3 was great to watch. Pass and move is the way to go and we have been sadly lacking in that with the same personnel. Full credit to MP. Most comfortable first half I have enjoyed at WHL....... well forever....

Typical Harry statement. Looking for more money to buy players from his trusted policy of buying only players from the old boys network. Maybe Phil Neville could come out of retirement--------"I don't know if that is a problem," he said when asked about his formation. One aspect of today seems to have been missed by posters here is that we have won after the EL Thursday! Maybe an omen or the coach knows how to use the squad ? Take your pick but certainly we're being shown a different way of doing things ?
Highgatespur
Big dilemma now is, who do we start on Thursday? Cb looks a bit stretched now with Vlad injured and possibly on his way out, and Dawson also all but gone as well, with Jan having played 2 games in quick succession, Dier having played 3 on the bounce and Kabs being made of glass. The tie is still very much in the balance and so therefore I doubt we will bring in the younger lads just yet. I would go for: Lloris, Naughton, Velkjovic, Kaboul, Davies, Sandro, Paulinho, Townsend, Holtby, Kane, Soldado. Thoughts?

I am extremely pleased with the all round team performance with great individual display of skill as well. 4 great goals. We were all over them for the entire game. Highgate - the Lloris interview said that before the World Cup he met with Levy. Dissappointed how far off the top sides we were and keen to compete and win things. He came away happy to extend and reassured by the clubs ambitions. e also spoke of the mutual need for stability managerial ly and says he is very happy with everything. That was before yesterday btw. The squad just seems united and yes, a few upgrades will be good such as Dawson out/ Fazio in, but hope we keep the likes of Holtby and Dembele who are keeping the others on their toes. Think sandro and Townsend may also go this week.........Rex won't agree, but just my thoughts.

It's so nice to actually enjoy watching Spurs again after the rubbish served up by AVB. Great tempo and movement with a good deal of skill thrown in. This was especially pleasing after having to play in 38 deg heat in Cyprus which seems to been overlooked by the dull-brains. But there is no room for complacency as QPR offered little for most of the game and then could have scored a couple late on. Most pleasing though was the way Lamela got stuck in - he's no shrinking violet. True test next week against the Poo.
Love totty
I see Soldado is now on VS - voting for himself.
Love totty
Love totty, why are you bringing up AVB with virtually every post, he was trying to implement his system with 7+ 2 players with no PL experience and yes the football wasn't always pretty but it wasn't the finished article and it wasn't always as bad as you make out we played great football against Everton away and Chelsea at home. Playing great football against that calibre of teams is different to playing QPR coached by a tactically inept coach like Redknapp, lets play great football against Pool on Sunday and then we know we got a team. COYS.

Has Dawson been sold or is he still argueing over personal terms?
Slurms McKenzie
Block D, Levy has done a decent job getting us to where we should be, 4th-6th but he wont take us any further, Lamela, Eriksen, Llorris, Capoue, Verthonghen will all be sold in the next couple of seasons if the right offer comes in and than we start again. The players know that there is no real ambition for us to challenge for the title and will want to go to clubs that win things, we can never make that challenge by not investing "real" money as opposed to recycled money. COYS.
ItalianYiddo
Ok lets not get carried away...QPR were poor....our defenders and lloris didn't have a lot to do....it's good for Lamela and chadli to get confidence and good for the group all round but we need to increase the tempo against pool because they will be closing us down not sitting back and admiring our passing like QPR did...
shedboy2
shedboy2.. I didn't see us playing at a slow tempo yesterday. We moved the ball around swiftly and accurately... Of course it will be different and tougher against Liverpool and in response our game will be different too... QPR playing badly, does not mean we didn't play some great football.
MAN ON!
block d - far too early to start crowing....let's see if we finish above 6th to see if there has been any improvement on the pitch...1 swallow doesn't make a summer. And as for Levy and ENIC let's see what sort of state they leave us in....people will still be clapping them as they walk out with hundreds of millions in their back pockets....a bit like Tony Blair and Gordon Brown spending everyone's money only for the people to realise after they had gone that it was the people that would have to pay it back...years later, we're still paying...tell me where did Lewis put that 50m?
shedboy2
man on- we were knocking it around in our own half at training speed..we had all the time in the world...yes we played well but QPR were as bad as we will face this year...
shedboy2
Don't you kind of wish Spurs were playing again today? Limassol seems to far away lol
RyanHotSpur
Shed: Did you not see the pressing, the chasing down and the tackles we put in? We worked hard and moved the ball around with quick one and two touch passing with plenty of movement and skill. Yes we slowed it down when we had the time and space and a 3-0 lead but, the off the ball running and moving fluidly in to space made that all possible. QPR were chasing shadows.
MAN ON!
I'm not getting carried away myself but I'm certainly not going to take the shine off our performance yesterday against a dull QPR, just because we have yet to play Liverpool.
MAN ON!
Although we totally humiliated QPR, murdered em, but lets not get too carried away. next weekends game v Liverpool will a more relevant measure of where we are in the pecking order, we need to be tested by a proper contender.

We put in a fantastic performance of football shed and you're talking about Brown and Blair. That's a strange and depressing way to be thinking the morning after.
MAN ON!
Shedboy2.. Why do you say the "people" of THFC have to pay the £'M ENIC sell up for?.. No Logic there, They have built this club up from a mid table position, ageing and inadequate training ground & stadium...into one of the top 12 richest clubs in Europe, using their own money, and from their running of the business, players, sponsors, merchandising, stadium naming etc.. A buyer will have a substantial property and assets. Anyway the buyer will be carefully chosen i think (Levy is a spurs fan after all he still has his seats in East Stand). Yes you are right about Tony Blair and his cronies..left the UK £900B in debt.. his party do not deserve to be elected again...like putting an alcoholic in charge of an Off licence.
Block D Spurs
First it was Musacchio, now it appears that the Fazio deal has cooled. We never get any momentum into our transfer business, it just drags on and on, many deals just don't get done in the end. You see massive deals like Balotelli to Liverpool, and Di Maria to Man Utd, moving at pace, getting done in days, rather than the weeks of dithering in ours. The Fazio deal is the triggering of the release clause of £8M, what could be simpler, if we want him get it done. There are 6 days to go in the window, at the pace that Levy/Baldini do business, anything that it not already under way, will run out of time. If as reported Dawson is going, and likely Chiriches as well, we will be left with Kaboul (until he breaks down), Dier and Vertonghen as our CB options to play hopefully 55-60 games in 4 competitions. Come on Levy/Baldini pull your bloody fingers out, and get it done, and while you are at it, get a bid in for Welbeck as well, he will be a bargain @ £15M, get Soldado sold or out on loan, and move on.
Frank
I don't see anyone getting "carried away" i just see people enjoying a great result and performance from their club, like a football supporter is supposed to do.. Teams have come to WHL and played crap several times over the past 2 years or so, yet I don't recall us putting in a performance like that. Does that mean we'll thrash Liverpool? Of course not, but it's promising to see the same players who looked so dysfunctional all last season, put in a high tempo, yet controlled display from start to finish yesterday. when we play badly and lose, im 100% sure the comments on here will reflect that, as they always do!

Frankly Franky Franky - Musachio deal hit a snag for obvious reasons, Fazio is apparently on a plane after being linked a few days ago. Dier took less than a week as did Yedlin. Do you not think perhaps some of these rumours that don't materialise are just that and then the paper backtracks with an excuse to cover their credibility?

Anyway it isn't just us, look at United with Depay, Liverpool with Reus, Arsenal with Benzema and that's just to name a few examples. It's the nature of the transfer window pal.

guyver great post, thoroughly agree

I think this quote sums up the performance yesterday

"It's one thing to beat a bad side but it's another to dismantle them and they beat them clinically. I liked that about Tottenham Hotspur." - Andy Gray http://hereisthecity.com/en-gb/2014/08/25/andy-gray-asks-should-tottenham-be-considered-title-challengers/

RyanHotSpur, how about Dawson to Hull - just how long has that been going on for

I'm pretty confident we'll bring a CB in before window closes, not so sure about a goal scorer though, that's going to leave us short with ANC, injuries etc.

Italian - everything is relative and I use the AVB experience as a low benchmark in assessing our current situation. I was not an AVB hater and at one point thought that he was getting there. We were solid and getting results against the top teams and I hoped that the style would come. On the contrary it transpired that it was only Bale's brilliance that sustained him and once he was gone it all fell apart. He lost the crowd and the players not one of whom improved under him. And as for his substitutions........ It's early days for Mauricio so all we can do is give him the same support that we initially gave AVB and hope for a better outcome but recognise that AVB had a much better opportunity with Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelski briefly falling back.
Love totty
One more thing. If we looked like we were playing the ball around as in a training session but, in a PL match, to me that is a positive thing. If all our matches were made to look like training sessions then we'd be one hell of a confident team of footballers.
MAN ON!
I don't care if QPR were poor, we played our game and won easily, let's enjoy each result, last week we beat west ham and some say it's lucky and let's wait for the next game, now we win and it's the next game again, beating Liverpool won't mean we will win the league, enjoy each result. Great win.
Kong
ISA - It's been off and on and on and off. Perhaps this is because of the collapse of Musachio deal collapsing? I'm sure we're looking at a 1 in 1 out policy and don't want to leave ourselves short. If the Fazio deal doesn't materialise I will take a good punt that Dawson will still be a lily white.

I'd also like to say that football is a business and it doesn't make good business sense to just buy something without proper assessment on whether it is needed, how much it will cost, how much it will cost to run etc, and as we are dealing with a person it makes deals all the more complicated. We can't expect them all to be as simple as a player being valued at 20m let's throw the money at the club and it will happen.
RyanHotSpur
Don't get me wrong, I am not trying to detract from yesterday, you can only beat what is put in front of you, and we did that very convincingly. The point I was making is that next weekend's game v Liverpool will be a more accurate measure of where we are in the grand scheme of things, the simple truth is that they are a significant upgrade from Palace, AEL, and QPR.
Frank
Kong, very true you can only beat what's in front of you, and lets be honest we bloody murdered em!! COYSS!!

Man on! - agreed! If we can make pl games look like a training session then we're on to a good thing. We expected a result against QPR and got one! What do people expect vs Liverpool at Anfield? I'd want to win, be complacent with a draw but expect not to lose by more than 2 goals personally.
RyanHotSpur
IY, 2 years ago QPR were relegated, finished rock bottom of the EPL, they visited WHL in late September having not won a single game all season. We scraped past them 2-1 to win our 1st home game of the season with a poor performance. Since when has a team coming to WHL with no shape and no plan, stopped us from playing crap/mediocre? Yesterday was promising and as you say enjoyable. Descriptive words that, imo, do not apply to the vast majority of performances over the past 2-3 years.
Guyver
I think it natural for some peeps to understate our performance of y'day. It's been such a long time awaiting a performance like this (Newcastle home last season?) that peeps daren't even pinch themselves to see if they are in dreamland. Me, I am buzzing and looking to read anything +ve Spurs in the media seeing that the Cockerel is sitting pretty atop the PL!!.

Having been starved of a decent, cohesive, hard-working, team-like, fluid, pressing style with GOALS and a clean sheet, it's hardly surprising peeps wanting their sanity checked! Blame QPR for our great performance, blame Harry or Hoddle, Blame their players for not taking their chances, Blame other PL teams for not making a 100% start..... You can't take away anything from the team performance of y'day. Early days or not, winning breeds confidence. Let's accumulate as many points as we can before we really get into our stride!! COYS!
Critical_Spur
Love totty, no evidence that AVB lost the players, you say that he didn't improve a single player, how about Bale? You give all the credit to Bale for the previous season but we had Bale before he came, and Modric, and VDV and King.....just think what he could have done if he had those other players to work with. Anyway all in the past new era now and at this moment in time is looking good. COYS.
ItalianYiddo
I would imagine that a new CB coming in will be contingent on Dawson leaving - it is never easy to juggle two transfers and perhaps Dawson is holding things up because he has not agreed terms or is still reluctant to go... who knows. Some transfers will drag on, others will be completed smoothly, same as at any other club
Guernman
I think the most exciting thing is having 2 clean sheets and a goal difference of 5 already!!! We're top of the GD league when usually we're worse off than 8th place in the league!
RyanHotSpur
Dawson is also being linked with Newcastle too by the Times. As for goalscorers, we have scored 5 goals in the EPL 2 from a defender, 2 from a midfielder and only 1 from a striker. I think this is how our goals will come throughout the season. All outfield players will be expected to contribute not specifically the strikers. In the EL we have scored 2 goals both from strikers. So 7 goals in competitive games and split around the team. Long may that continue.
longtimespur
Guernman, I was thinking the same thing about Dawson, does he really want to go? if not he could hang on and block Fazio.
Thats Entertainment
Why does AVB keep popping up? He failed to achieve his targets even after commanding a 100m transfer budget and that is the end of his story. One player does not make a team and we could have signed 2 Bale replacements for that kind of money that would have made an immediate impact. MoPo seems to be doing well so far with the same string of players, he has only signed a couple of young defenders so far for a pittance, and I believe they were meant for backup rather than 1st team selection. Comparison end of the season?
RyanHotSpur
RyanHotSpur, I still think that we are disproportionately "careful" in the transfer market, compared to others. This of course makes last summer's "kid in a sweet shop" spree all the more baffling, and perhaps partly explains why we have reverted to the traditional ENIC stance of "short arms and deep pockets", even though there are clearly obvious shortcomings, still present in our squad. If Fazio is in fact, flying, or has flown in for talks etc. why not a simple 1 line "Sky sources understands...." statement to update us, why the shroud of secrecy?
Frank
Longtime - I think we have no choice but to rely on the non-strikers at the club to chip in with the goals. Soldado is not prolific, nor is Adebayor & although I am starting to hold on some hope for Kane he is not a finished product (hopefully that isn't to cliche). We still need to bolster the front line in my opinion. I wouldn't be too sad to see Soldado and Adebayor replaced.
RyanHotSpur
Here are the top five statistics from the Sunday's encounter between Tottenham and Queens Park Rangers: 1) After assisting only one goal in his first 10 Premier League appearances for Tottenham, Erik Lamela was able to assist two goals in 7 minutes against QPR. The Argentine winger completed six (of ten) attempted take ons, whilst creating three chances for his side. In Mauricio Pochettino's first competitive home match, he emerged as the stand-out player for the Lilywhites....... 2) Despite Lamela final assist tally, Emmanuel Adebayor proved the most creative player on pitch, orchestrating four key passes in total. He played an instrumental role in his side's opening goal, clipping in a perfectly weighted cross for Nacer Chadli to bring down and strike. The Togo international also won more contests than any other player, recovering the ball on seven occasions...... 3) Chadli's second goal of the match had a build-up of 48 passes (double the longest Premier League goal in 2013-14 season). He finished the match on a brace having hit the target from 100% of his attempts as Spurs ran riot against their bewildered opponents. He also completed 93% of his total attempted passes..... 4) Etienne Capoue recorded an incredible 131 touches of the ball in this match, controlling possession on more occasions than any other player. He also fashioned the highest pass total, attempting to find a Spurs team-mate 121 times, 108 of which proved accurate. By full-time he had recorded a pass completion rate of 89%...... 5) Spurs have now scored three, or more, goals in each their last five top flight appearances at White Hart Lane. This latest 4-0 victory sees them assume first place in the Premier League table, leading London rivals Chelsea on goal difference.
MAN ON!
Dawson should be told that he can leave, or if he prefers to stay for the last year of his contract, he will not be selected, he will not train with the first team squad, and he will be able to leave at the end of his contract, if in fact anybody wants to sign him, after a year without football. Or he can go to a club with whom we have agreed terms, and where he will presumably be in their first team picture, otherwise why would they try to sign him. One player cannot be allowed to hold the club to ransom.
Frank
I'm not a big fan of stats but those 5 look pretty impressive to me and so I couldn't resist.
MAN ON!
Liverpool will be a real test, but I don't really think we should be looking at it as a definitive moment. Rogers has been working with liverpool for a few seasons and has had plenty of time to mould his team. Poch has only had a few weeks. Already we have seen very clear signs of the philosophy he is instilling and despite a fair share of luck against west ham, I think the signs are extremely encouraging for the future irrespective of what happens next weekend. One thing that was very evident was that yesterday the players showed a real team spirit and always passed to better positioned attackers. That is one thing that Townsend most definitely does not do, despite his obvious talents, nor does he work hard at covering the defense or winning back the ball. If he can't fit the philosophy of the team perhaps an offer of 12 million from Southampton is too good an opportunity to turn down. Mourinho was right in retrospect to sell Mata because he didn't fit their philosophy, and townsend is no mata.
Guernman
Frank ... sorry, I see you've already read this piece on Fazio. Didn't think you had by your post about our transfers taking longer!

Frank - A club will never make a statement until the player has signed the contract. It saves face.

As for the spending spree, I agree it was out of character, but perhaps AVB suggested he'd need to command such a budget in order to replace Bale and achieve top four, which is probably why he got the sack before the season was over, as it started to look like he'd fail on that promise.

Spurs have more business sense than the Manchester clubs and Chelsea. All that expenditure with no guarantee of a league title. It isn't impossible to win the league with a fraction of their spending, and we gradually improve as a club. We have been unfortunate to lose players such as Modric, Berbatov and Bale, but we have failed to be consistent with our management too, which in my opinion has been the catalyst for some of the more recent departures.

I personally believe if we stick with MoPo for the longer haul, we'll keep our best players and improve gradually whilst turning profits year by year. There's no guarantee us splashing cash will improve our league position and last year proved that. There is however a guarantee that massive expenditure will generated loss!

RyanHotSpur, clubs do make statements before players sign. SSN is full of the latest news on Balotelli, and Di Maria, and Hull talking about Dawson. There was a statement several days ago that "Tottenham are interested in Fazio", nothing since, so it is reasonable to assume it has gone quiet, in spite of blogger's claims that he was seen on a flight into London.
Frank
Win % means nothing when comparing managers.....
MAN ON!
Rex I agree, you can't force the player to leave when you gave him a contract for a longer period of time. Dawson has been a loyal figure to Spurs over the years and he may have lost his place in the squad but he is still a good face to have around the club. I'm not fussed if he stays or goes to be honest, I appreciate all he has done for Spurs up to now for me to be able to say he has to leave.

Frank SSN although the most credible of all football related reporting does not report only facts... The club will not make an official statement until the player signs. The only draw back I saw from yesterday's great win was our defending from set pieces. Caulker should of had an hat-trick in the end. Not just one occasion was he given space. Even in the last seconds of the game he had a free header inside the 6 yard box and managed to put it wide. I'm not sure but it looked liked we were zonal marking. It certainly needs a lot of work doing on it as better teams will not miss those chances. Though I must say it was great to see us score from a corner.

Ryan ... Because there was a bus strike?!

When did we buy Kanoul?
Geofspurs
I think Dawson deserves some respect. He is a long serving tottenham man through and through, until recently the club captain, who no doubt would want to see out his career at the club that he loves. He has chosen to stay and fight for his place before and ended up not only retaining it but being our most used defender last season. I believe that he is not good enough to be starting for us if we have genuine top 4 ambitions, certainly he is not suited to a high line, but what would it say about us as a club if we hold him over a barrel. If he goes, then the best of luck to him, if he stays then he should have every chance to prove himself and continue to serve the club in the exemplary manner he always has.
Guernman
Still more or less the same bunch of players AVB had to work with and look at the difference! I'm more annoyed at all the knockers who scoffed at our transfer business last season and proclaimed that all our signings bar Eriksen were failures and a waste of money. When it now appears the components were all there we just had the wrong tool trying to put them all together!
Slurms McKenzie
Guernman I agree, I don't see retaining Dawson as a huge problem if we keep Kaboul fit and we get our two RB's fully fit then a selection pool of Verts, Kaboul, Dier, Dawson, Veljkovic and Fryers seems fairly reasonable. If the new guy we are linked with is as much of an improvement as Dier appears to be then selling Dawson will certainly increase competition amoungst our CBs! Its hardly Hobson's choice!
Slurms McKenzie
I think Dawson should be given the role of club captain, similar to the position King used to have. He could also be used as a back up CB and he wouldn't affect our squad size as we won't have enough HG players if all the players, some want out do go. They seem to be the English contingent of Dawson, Lennon, Townsend, Naughton, Fryers, Mason, and even Walker have all been touted. Where will our 8 HG players come from this season or will we only have an 18 man squad?
longtimespur
So which is the best result for us tonight? Liverpool to scrap a win and remain cocky coming into our match? A draw which keeps both city and pool 2 points behind us early in the Season? City to scrape by giving Liverpool room to gloss over the defeat by pointing to their good performance? or City to put three or four goals past them and leave Liverpool coming to us with something to prove?
Slurms McKenzie
Rex he's gone, for good or bad we now are two managers further on down the road, let it go, he's not coming back!
Slurms McKenzie
What's the opinion on the likelihood of Sandro, Chiriches, Soldado and Townsend leaving the club this window?

They seem to have dropped down the pecking order for selection and with the need to trim the squad a little are these players we're willing to lose?
RyanHotSpur
Slurms ... A City and Pool draw would be fine. If someone has to win it should be the team that is most likely to finish above in any case ... probably City?
Geofspurs
Guernmam, excellent post re Dawson. I am still not convinced that Kaboul is properly fit and I would be quite happy to keep Dawson as 3rd or 4th choice

Rex the lack of playing time in the prem had severly restricted the new arrivals acclimatisation to the premier league. What has improved them is playing players in positions that they are used to and earned their transfers in. whether its the first day in the league or a ten year veteran inverting wingers, Dropping CDM into CB, CB's at LB dropping strikers altogether will result in decreased performances. What did for AVB was his focus on not loosing games in his second season. which worked when we nicked the goal but was left wanting when we conceded and had no real game plan when goals were needed. With more time could he have improved this situation? possibly I certainly believe the club thought he would see out at least the second year of his contract which would have given him more time to integrate the new players but I got the feeling that he had ran down a tactical cul-de-sac and propably regretted his decision to alledgedly turn now PSG in the previous summer!

Rex, I'm afraid not meeting your targets, getting done 6-0 at Citieh, 5-0 at home to Liverpool, 3-0 at home to Wetspam and boring the arse off paying fans is FALIURE in my book!

The only fact that matters to me is the fact that watching my team bored me to tears under AVB. I'm a realist; I don't expect trophies when other clubs spend mega money they never earned. I do however expect to be entertained when I've devoted so much time to watching the club over the past 50 years. Win percentages count for nothing - it's all about the pride I feel during and after a game. The crowd at the Lane understand what I'm saying. No manager will survive long if he doesn't do it the Spurs Way. If you don't get that you're supporting the wrong club.
Love totty
Rex - Do you know why AVB left the club? Did he say during the interview?

My personal opinion is, he failed to do a job at Chelsea with a team full to the brim with superstar talent, we then signed him with the optimism he could take us to 4th place. He failed to achieve champions league qualification. He also failed to take points off any of our rivals. Huge losses at Liverpool, Chelsea (cup match) and City showed a lot about the motivation he gave to the players... We were an embarrassment at times under his reign, and although he maintained a high win %, he also had a higher loss % than some of out best managers of all time. The team was not improving under him, and there was un settlement at the camp. If he had completed his last season I will dare to say his win % would have dropped significantly. Tim Sherwood was not the most tactically astute manager but he did bring about settlement in the camp for a short space of time, which helped to improve results.

I think perhaps the EPL was not the right league for him. I'm not saying he was a bad manager but he wasn't going to be the man to take us forward I'm afraid.
RyanHotSpur
Further more I don't recall a huge number of people on here calling for AVB to be sacked what the fans wanted was a better balance between attack and defence, something which Pochettino seems to be implementing. Most rational people acknowledge the contribution AVB made in his first season and we had high hopes that the club would ride the crest of his new wave to success and trophies. His defensive record over the first 10/12 games of last season was very impressive but our chance creation stats were pitiful but still a damn sight better then our shots on target stats which were shameful!

I will join in on the AVB side. Jol, Ramos, Redknapp, AVB, AVB not my choice but the best from those 4.I could see what he was trying to achieve but he had to go because WHL and Levy were turning sour against him. Far too soon to judge MP but start is promising. However yesterday was strange, Redknapp, Bond and co watching their team disintegrate by trying to follow the tactics devised by somebody sitting up in the stands. And don’t expect Sterling, Henderson or Sturridge to do a Phillips next week .

Some interesting points of view, my take on AVB was that he had a blue print on how he wanted the team to play and the changes he wanted to make, just the same at chelski only they had high ranking players who would not buy into his way of thinking and they got him out, he got us some good results, but he also got us some bad ones, that's football. The problem was he lost his get out of jail free card when Gareth left, because many times Gareth's goals not only saved us the saved AVB, speaking to a mate who is a season ticket holder and very well known in the ranks of supporters at the lane, some of the players fell out of love with his way of playing, slow, slow build up and the supporters started to get bored with it, that came across to Levy so he did, what needed to be done, appointing Sherwood was to over see the squad for this season, that appointment was never going to be long term, Levy wanted Van Gaal, but Utd sacked Moyes and everything was up in the air again, MP has according to reports, worked them very hard pre-season, to get them fitter and that means the work rate off the ball is stepped up, which I think we can already see, I have never changed my opinion about Eric Lamela when we signed him, I said he is a real footballing talent, the way he played for Roma was outstanding and he scored some great goals, but he was fit and had a great understanding with his team mates, his back injury set him back and given time to settle into another culture and country takes time we are only human, not robots, the same goes for him, when we signed Chadli some said ''he can also play as a striker'' he looked like one yesterday for sure, everyone needs time, AVB needed time, but never got it, the new 7 need time, they had it last season, now they have to kick on and do the job we paid good money for and that's perform at the highest level for our club, with Vlad it looks as if he is moving on, well good luck to him, if the same goes for Dawson good luck to him, it's only two games in, but all we wanted was WINS and we have two, given thursday is our next game MP can rotate the team, we wont win them all, but we should all be happy with the start, that's as much as one can ask.

Can't see my posts but I'll try one last time. I got my loss stay confused with TS but I still think AVB should have done a better job with Chelsea. With the amount of talent at his disposal he just simply should have done better. I think he lacks man management skills. As for his tenure at Spurs, it's true we scraped many a game off the back of Gareth Bale's world class quality. I think the results from the start of his last season indicated his win % was only going to worsen. His overall win % was only 55% with 20 draws and 16 losses against the 44 wins. In the season he was "sacked" he was 8 wins 3 draws and 5 losses including huge defeats to City and Liverpool. Also I'd like to point out many of those games were only 1-0 / 2-1 wins vs opposition such as Fullham, Cardiff (both relegated) Palace, Sunderland (Both lucky to avoid relegation) and hull / Swansea. 2-0 wins over villa and Norwich to make the 8. It wasn't good enough for a side challenging for a top four place.
RyanHotSpur
And just for the record, a tactically inept Sherwood took over and we saw instant improvement. 2-1 win to United away, 3-0 vs stoke, coming back from 2 down to win 3-2 vs Southampton and improved results against teams we'd already lost or drawn to under the first part of the season overseen by AVB. I'm sorry but I think AVB left to soon for it to become glaringly obvious where he was taking us, and unfortunately I don't think it was up the table.

Lads we're top of the table now lets live in the present, the time for navel gazing is the month of June when there is no real football news! we have transfer dealing in and out ot discuss. the mini collapse of United (who most predicted would finish above us and in the champions league- not Slurms though), the settled squad and master tactician at Arsenil struggling to over come middle of the road opposition and the emergence of blinding talents like Chadli, Lamela, Dier, Rose, and a happy and productive Ade. Surely all that is more interesting and relevant then did AVB jump or get pushed despite the man making a statement after he left the club that it was his decision to leave, with a massive pay off and a cussy new job in eastern Europe!
Slurms McKenzie
Actually Slurms, I think you just made the whole AVB thing sound a lot more interesting. How about writing an article?!
Geofspurs
Rex, even though I supported AVB I very rarely bring him up in my posts unrelated to him because he's history now but when people talk crap like all down to Bale when we got our highest point tally and all down to him when we lose heavily to City and Pool I find it difficult not to challenge it. Of course Bale scored, assisted himself and defended to stop the other side scoring, not sure why we needed to field 11 players. Wenger lost just as heavily against them both and of course it was his fault that Llorris gifted two goals to City and against Pool that we had a very makeshift defence and then Paulinho gets himself sent off.

Italian you do talk some sense there regarding AVB's points tally, it was more his style, or lake of it, that got to me.

On the game it was great to be back at WHL, even better to have 4 goals to celebrate there, first time since Harry's 5-0 Newcastle win!! QPR however were useles, said pre-season west ham and qpr were gimmes and fair play to us we've taken them. Lamela really wanted it, will have to go up another gear against real opposition but such a big improvement on last season.. Also fair play to Chadli, I've never rated him but can't do much more than that. COYS.

Lamela clear motm, and still not at his best. Chadli took his goals really well and what spirit at the back and DM. Liverpool will be a different kettle of fish especially now they have dropped points so early. I think they will get at us more and the midfield will be packed. Will be good to see Poch’s attitude and tactics. Very early days and our team still needs time to gel, build up fitness and get used to our style. COYS.
