Tottenham Hotspur vs. AEL Limassol

Tottenham Hotspur vs. AEL Limassol

Following the glorious 4-0 thumping of QPR at the weekend, next on the list for Tottenham Hotspur and Mauricio Pochettino is negotiating what promises to be a tricky second leg against AEL Limassol, which would secure a place in the group stage of this year's Europa League.

Theatrically, the tie remains in the balance, however, having grabbed two away goals in Cyprus, you would think most of the job has been done and Thursday night is just a case of seeing out what remains of the tie, with another clean sheet on the agenda this time, something we couldn't do in the first leg.

As far as injuries are concerned, we don't look too bad, with the only long term absentee being Kyle Walker, yet Roberto Soldado has been ruled out of tomorrow night's match with back and neck injuries respectively. Good news however sees Vlad Chiriches being included in the squad after his return from a back injury that has kept him out since April, and the Romanian will be keen to make a good impression for the new man in charge after recent reports had been linking him to a move away from the club.

Sandro, Paulinho and Lewis Holtby will also look to prove they still have something to offer, with the two Brazilians looking surplus to requirements so far, whilst I would like to see maybe one or two of Mason and/or Ceballos given some game time to continue their good work in pre-season.

Line-up wise, like many other fans, I don't have a clear idea of who will get the nod, as Mauricio has used the large squad at his disposal quite wisely thus far and mixed it up frequently this season, but nevertheless I would guess he would go with something along these lines: Lloris, Naughton, Chiriches, Kaboul, Davies, Sandro, Paulinho, Mason, Holtby, Townsend, Kane.

I fail to see this one as a ‘tricky second leg’ ... not as tricky as the first one anyway. Should be a game everyone involved in Spurs can enjoy. Maybe give Lloris a day off for this?

Geofspurs, it's "tricky" if we just turn up and expect to win. As long as we play to our abilities, we should avoid any MK sized shocks.

I suppose any match can prove to be a tricky one, with football often being unpredictable. (Look at the Dons v United). If Limassol get an early goal and make a real game of it, you never know. Still, I do believe we can win this comfortably in front of what I expect to be a buoyant WHL crowd, after Sundays fun and games against QPR. Another 3, 4 or more Spurs' goals will lead us nicely into the Liverpool match, on a high and hopefully full of confidence. Up the Spurs!

You'd expect with our squad depth we'll field a lineup just as strong as the away game. Playing at home should make things easier for us, but never count your chickens before they hatch. We still need to do a job and the idea will still be to score at least 1 more than them. Hopefully another entertaining night of football for Spurs fans and football fans alike.

As an aside, can anybody explain why there are several stories on Spurs Media Watch claiming the we are hoping to qualify for the CL via the "Europa loophole"? I would suggest that if you win the Europa, (complete with the CL dropouts), you've proved yourself worthy of inclusion. (A bit like winning the CL and taking the place of the team that finished fourth in the league. That wouldn't happen would it? Oh, wait a minute.......)

It wouldn't be a loophole if say WE won the Europa league, but it would be a loophole if a CL group stage drop out won it the Europa league whilst failing to qualify via league position.

MP Barclays Manager of the Month, no thanks, that's the kiss of death, give it to Van Gaal spent over 130m and not won a game to date. Game tonight down at the lane, what's the team going to be, resting up as many as possible for sunday I hope and getting the job done without risk or injury. COYS.

At the game tonight. First game this season. I (personally) hope to see Davies play as I want Rose and Davies to fight for their spot. Besides, it would be good to have both as true options as they may suit different opponents and scenarios. I hope to see Naughton because his pre-season was reported to be pretty good. I would love to get a good look at Dier, but perhaps he should be given this game off. Besides that, I would like to see Holtby in the middle, Paulinho, Lennon and Kane. As for Mason, I haven't seen him play since a friendly match 3 years ago. Lastly, Vorm would be nice....what's up with that....?

All I ask is that we treat this second leg as still a live tie, take AEL seriously, pick a decent side, roll up our sleeves and nullify them early on, and earn the right to play our more expansive football, and to relatively relax, enjoy ourselves, and win comfortably. We must guard against complacency, think this second leg is over, is a formality, better and bigger than us have fallen into this trap, and paid dearly for it. The same goes for the forthcoming League Cup tie v Notts Forest, that will be a proper game, they are no mugs, and deserve respect, we must not add our name to the list of PL clubs who have already bowed out.

Frank, in a way the MK Dons result was a good one for us. It knocked a premier league side out of a competition that is winnable for us and, with MP in the stands watching on, it showed him that unless you take each game seriously, you can seriously mess up.

Like to see Vorm in goal. Expecting to see Naughton at right back....and wondering if Holtby will be involved ( thinking he is wanted back in Germany ). As for Welbeck....looks like Mopo'..is looking to gain him on loan to a permanent move, covering the possible loss of Adebayor..to the ANC..qualifiers, this Autumn...and Winter. Be surprised if Man.utd would accept a loan deal...and help a competitor out.....but cannot predict football / Man.utd. If...it came to Buying Welbeck or loseing him to another team......I say go for it, for no more than £16mill'. "Come on you Spurs".
