Tottenham Hotspur vs. AEL Limassol

Following the glorious 4-0 thumping of QPR at the weekend, next on the list for Tottenham Hotspur and Mauricio Pochettino is negotiating what promises to be a tricky second leg against AEL Limassol, which would secure a place in the group stage of this year's Europa League.

Theatrically, the tie remains in the balance, however, having grabbed two away goals in Cyprus, you would think most of the job has been done and Thursday night is just a case of seeing out what remains of the tie, with another clean sheet on the agenda this time, something we couldn't do in the first leg.

As far as injuries are concerned, we don't look too bad, with the only long term absentee being Kyle Walker, yet Roberto Soldado has been ruled out of tomorrow night's match with back and neck injuries respectively. Good news however sees Vlad Chiriches being included in the squad after his return from a back injury that has kept him out since April, and the Romanian will be keen to make a good impression for the new man in charge after recent reports had been linking him to a move away from the club.

Sandro, Paulinho and Lewis Holtby will also look to prove they still have something to offer, with the two Brazilians looking surplus to requirements so far, whilst I would like to see maybe one or two of Mason and/or Ceballos given some game time to continue their good work in pre-season.

Line-up wise, like many other fans, I don't have a clear idea of who will get the nod, as Mauricio has used the large squad at his disposal quite wisely thus far and mixed it up frequently this season, but nevertheless I would guess he would go with something along these lines: Lloris, Naughton, Chiriches, Kaboul, Davies, Sandro, Paulinho, Mason, Holtby, Townsend, Kane.

I suppose any match can prove to be a tricky one, with football often being unpredictable. (Look at the Dons v United). If Limassol get an early goal and make a real game of it, you never know. Still, I do believe we can win this comfortably in front of what I expect to be a buoyant WHL crowd, after Sundays fun and games against QPR. Another 3, 4 or more Spurs' goals will lead us nicely into the Liverpool match, on a high and hopefully full of confidence. Up the Spurs!

We still need to do a job and the idea will still be to score at least 1 more than them. Hopefully another entertaining night of football for Spurs fans and football fans alike.

As an aside, can anybody explain why there are several stories on Spurs Media Watch claiming the we are hoping to qualify for the CL via the "Europa loophole"? I would suggest that if you win the Europa, (complete with the CL dropouts), you've proved yourself worthy of inclusion. (A bit like winning the CL and taking the place of the team that finished fourth in the league. That wouldn't happen would it? Oh, wait a minute.......)

It wouldn't be a loophole if say WE won the Europa league, but it would be a loophole if a CL group stage drop out won it the Europa league whilst failing to qualify via league position.

At the game tonight. First game this season. I (personally) hope to see Davies play as I want Rose and Davies to fight for their spot. Besides, it would be good to have both as true options as they may suit different opponents and scenarios. I hope to see Naughton because his pre-season was reported to be pretty good. I would love to get a good look at Dier, but perhaps he should be given this game off. Besides that, I would like to see Holtby in the middle, Paulinho, Lennon and Kane. As for Mason, I haven't seen him play since a friendly match 3 years ago. Lastly, Vorm would be nice....what's up with that....?

All I ask is that we treat this second leg as still a live tie, take AEL seriously, pick a decent side, roll up our sleeves and nullify them early on, and earn the right to play our more expansive football, and to relatively relax, enjoy ourselves, and win comfortably. We must guard against complacency, think this second leg is over, is a formality, better and bigger than us have fallen into this trap, and paid dearly for it. The same goes for the forthcoming League Cup tie v Notts Forest, that will be a proper game, they are no mugs, and deserve respect, we must not add our name to the list of PL clubs who have already bowed out.

Got to win tonight first before we start chewing nails about Sunday. To be honest at this stage of the season both teams would probably settle for a draw!
I Liverpool fail to put five goals past us will that mean we have improved or they have gone backward?

I also note with an arched eyebrow that all the football pundits who two weeks ago had Liverpool struggling with United and Everton to get that fourth place spot are now confidently telling everyone that they tipped Spurs for big things this season! As I recall all summer we have been written off based on the all the bad transfers from last season and lack of ability in our squad. What changed?

Still a full English LB on the books surely that adds at least five million to his Home grown price tag which adds at least 5 million more. So 10million+ because of his passport and England cap, his talent will then dictate the remaining balance!! Should Dier keep performing at his current level and should Walker regain his fitness we could easily have the bulk of the England back four playing for Spurs!

With regards to Welbeck, I'd have him in a heart beat. Age and abilities are in his favour, with only his finishing to work on. He's a grafter that plays upfront. Sounds like the ideal person to start defensive pressing if that's what MoPo wants from the team. ... Some on here might only want to put up particular stats, stating he's only scored 1 in 5, but I doubt he's ever played a whole season as a striker, often being used wide due to his pace and dribbling ability. He's technically sound, just needs finishing (ruthlessness) training imo. At £16m he's got the English premium, so his value would be closer to £12m to suit people's tastes of value = quality. Alongside our youthful team, he will be a league winner, looking to inspire Spurs. Fergie had lots of faith in him and 9 in 25 league games in a terrible season for ManUre, isn't that bad, considering, is it? Bargain!

I agree with Tarkan re: Liverpool. I think they have an improved squad, despite losing Suarez. I think they did very well without him at the start of last season and will do just as well this time. Suarez, regardless of his goals, could be seen as a liability if we are to be left field with our thoughts. After all, his absence through the ban, could well be the reason for them not winning the title, if you believe that they did badly miss him. Spurs will beat them on Sunday, of course, because we are the superior team. No problem. Up the Spurs!

How many said Rose should be despatched before the season kicked off? Many say 'in Poch I trust'. Well stick to it! Poch's choice, whilst to a degree depends on the PAST performance of an individual, IMO, is more to do with can HE coach him and will he adapt to the philosophy and will the team benefit ONCE he has been coached. If we are looking at Welbeck then fine, it will take him 3 to 4 games to adapt. So, by the time Ade saunters off to ACN, Welbeck should fit in seamlessly. COYS!

I am not Welbecks biggest fan, but his stats are better than Lallana. He is 23 years old, 20goals/90apps ( 1 in 4.5) for utd, 8goals/26 England (1 in 3.3), 16m is cheap when you look at Lallana, 26years old, 25m and 48goals/235app (1 in 4.9) for Saints and 0/9 caps England.. When you consider Ade is off on ACN duty, then it makes perfect sense to have someone who can play out wide or striker. Welbeck would be a really good addition to the squad. I don't consider Welbeck a better striker than Benteke or Bony but his all round game is much better than either and I would still try and sign an out and out striker, especially if Pocho wants to let Soldado go.

Liverpool are in for a difficult season in my opinion. Not saying that they cannot finish top four, as they are capable... But things are going to be much harder for them for these reasons: a) Last season they had no Europe competition, AND got out of the cups early. Merely 43 games in ALL comps they contended with. Spurs played 53 games in all comps - including a trips to Russia, Romania and war-torn Ukraine! This season will different. b) Suarez. Irreplaceable. After a slow start here, those shots stopped hitting the woodwork, and started going in. The other thing is that he struck a great partnership with Sturridge - that cannot be replaced either. That created more goals than the sum of the parts. One bite later, and Suarez had to be replaced - which leads me to the next point. c) Balotelli - whilst his goal record is good, he just will not be as reliable to keep "trying" like Suarez did. But like Suarez, he is prone to the odd suspension and controversy. Not a good replacement in my eyes, but let's see. Lambert needs to be played, and isn't right now - and this will only slow his integration. d) Sturridge - a lot more rests on him. Not sure that he is up to it, but I think that he is a good player. e) defence - still leaky and easily conceded the most goals in the top 5. Without the same strikeforce, this will be felt. f) Ageing Gerrard - he had a great season up until that slip up! It would be amazing if he could repeat, but I would be surprised as he is bound to wane at some point. g) Less momentum - last season everything conspired (all the above points) to give Liverpool momentum. This momentum allowed them to grab points that weren't theirs to grab. Lot's of last minute points, and early goals leading to easy routs. Not sure that it will repeat. As for Man U, I thought that Van Gaal would have them back on track early. But something is wrong. Clearly they need a squad overhaul, but they spent all the cash on Stones and Di Maria! Bizarre. The squad has been ageing, crocked and thinning out for years, and nothing has been done. I am beginning to think that Moyes was not too much to blame for last season. Top four is definitely up for grabs for someone who wants it most - be it Everton, Us or someone else who can get momentum. We have to first see if we can repeat last weekend's showing vs Liverpool and other big boys first.

I was actually not trying to compare them directly as players. I can see Welbeck playing as a striker or 1 of the 3 attacking or in a 4-3-3. He would be a good addition to our squad for 16m for a 23 year old England international with 26 caps. Lallana is 26 years old with 9 caps. I think this is a very good deal. I am writing Wellbeck off because everybody knows it was Van Persi who won manchester United the league,Spurs need to find their own Van Persie because IMO the contribtution by Wellbeck is not enough.

If Spurs played Manchester United i`d love for Wellbeck to be in their team, for me he is not a big threat.Occasional glimpses of form are not what Spurs need if they want to get around 75 points.

Spurs & Everton have both got 72 points in recent seasons & yet still not enough for Champions league. We need Soldado to come good & chip in plus another who will get around 15 to 20 goals a season. It`s what wins you games at the end of the day.
We need a Benteke type player over a Wellbeck one any day of the week.I was wrong about benteke & Tophobunty banged that drum about him countless times.Benteke is the sort of player Spurs need.We already have silky players in lamela & Eriksen, but we don`t have a double hard striker like benteke,or someone as lethal as van persie who can win a game on his own.Wellbeck is not a match winner when you`re playing bad.
A match winner when you`re playing bad or having a bad day & conjure up 3 points out of nowhere are worth their weight in gold.
Eric Dier for West Ham fine example, massive fan of his already.

Personally I believe Welbeck can be bought outright of less than 15 mill. Most of the top 4 teams have more or less concluded their business (Man U are NOT top 4!). Apart from us, only Arsenal possibly need a striker to cover for Girooo. Manu U have accepted quite a low fee for Tom Cleverley (an England player). I think they'd be somewhat desperate to off-load considering LVG wants to do a Harry there! COYS!

Sorry, no longer buy the 'match winner' idea. Poch is building a TEAM. As a TEAM we've done OK so far wrt goals, one of the reasons we are sitting above the usual culprits. I don't care whom we've played against so far. Last season we couldn't score for toffee and we may have beaten QPR by a max of 2 goals. We couldn't beat W Ham, but we found another goal scorer. Wait 'til the understanding is fluid between the attacking mid-fielders. IMO, there are a lot of goals in the TEAM. Yes, we had Bale bailing us out and we moaned. Now we have several goal scorers and we want to go back to that 'game changer'? COYS!

Tophobunty also argued about Adebayor being our saviour up front which is clearly not the case. I don't see many differences in the type of game both Ade and Welbeck bring to the forward line, so in that alone we would be improving on age, attitude, homegrown quota and having a player that doesn't go missing for AFCON.

No one is saying Welbeck is what we need right now to solve the goal drought up front but he is an improvement at least for the above mentioned reasons and thus allows us to sell Soldado / Ade in the near future. I don't think we have a top striker lined up yet so perhaps it would be best to get the pieces in place now and focus on signings a real talent come January / next year.

Criticalspur says he doesn`t buy the match winner idea yet we only have to look at Lloris for that.A match winner can come from anywhere on the park,& so can a match loser.
All about key points in games & game changing decisions, genius or errors.
Mark Noble misses a penalty, lloris saves from point blank,Dier steals the 3 points.Three massive key incidents during the game that got West ham no points & Spurs all 3.Every club needs these moments but cannot rely on them.
West ham fans must of been furious they never won & Spurs fans must be in disbelief that they did.
Similar to when Stalteri scored for us to win 4-3,fine lines & match winning moments.

Fanny adams, you touched on the exact point I am making, though mine was more in a roundabout way! A 'game changer' or a 'match winner' call it what you like, I don't believe we should be relying on ONE player to take the responsibility. You cite Lloris. But I can say Eriksen too has been the match winner as have others in glimpses. My point is if we have that TEAM spirit and mentality, everyone's a (or should be) a 'match winner. It's way too early to be almost 'demanding' that from indivduals. I thought there were several 'game changers' in the past three games. Let's see how many (if not the whole TEAM) bring that mentality to the table in January.

Ben davis has been solid as has noughton. Dembele has been very good. Paulinho has been quiet taken up some good positions and unlucky with one rebound off the keeper But doing what the manager wants and pounced on the mistake to set up the goalvwith a lovely pass. Most of the team enhanced their reputations, and we looked a good side for a second X1. Kane took his goal well, but really should have had a hatrick without the penalty. I thought Sandro was excellent, out of Lennon and Townsend, I thought Aaron won that hands down, Davies had a decent game as did Dembele, Kaboul, Chiriches was found out a couple of times in the air, Lloris only in the game on a total of 4 occasions, Naughton had an OK game, in fact it was an excellent team performance except for Townsend, I'm afraid he only makes a token contribution to the team, all fart and blow, with no end product to speak of, how many good crosses, or penetrative passes, did he make in 90 minutes.

This is the english version from Marca in spain, something to do with the money, has Pele got it, why did Levy give it to him to take over, so it reads; 08/28/2014 Sevilla are fuming at Federico Fazio. President José Castro talked to the media after leaving the traditional floral offering to the Virgin of the Kings, among other things assuring that the Argentinean is still a Sevilla player. "The player has a contract and the money may have been deposited with La Liga, but it is not in Sevilla's coffers. I don't understand what the player is doing in England. He will leave, but he will leave when his contract is terminated and it hasn't been yet", explained the executive, who added that the club is looking at taking disciplinary action against the Argentine. Castro acknowledged that "these things happen in football", before adding, "Obviously we're angry." "I'm not going to go into details regarding certain things about Fazio. I don't want to. It won't lead to anything. They've paid €10 million for him, which is his buy-out clause. We'll see if they have to pay more for him according to the rules." The Fazio bust-up is not over. It remains to be seen what steps are taken, what reactions are to come, and whether the player has anything to say. Fazio has already been unveiled by Spurs and wants to move on. "I've come to Tottenham because it is a great club and has fantastic fans", said the player in London. However, he will also have to come out and respond to this latest development. In other affairs, Castro talked about upcoming additions. He said that "the squad will be complete with the arrival of the centre-back, Kolodziejczak". Why do we never learn, Townsend has pace, stamina, good technique, and excellent work ethic. His decision making is his Achilles thats plain to see. But again the raw ingredients are there. He is a good coaches dream & guess what he will improve massively under this coaching staff. If we were to follow the same logic as we constantly seem to go through, Rose would not be getting an England cap next week he would be in a relegation dog fight after being given away. Kane would have been sold 2 years ago for thrupence to Scarborough when he was the latest player deemed not good enough. Im hopeful & confident we have a set up that will get the best out of talented players and not just rely on an unsustainable turnaround of players each window. And by the way Im not a blind optimist, Sherwood from day 1 was an unmitigated disaster waiting to happen whatever the points tally says.

Davies solid display and a good shot saved by the keeper...won't be long before we see a switchover in the PL...the balls in Rose's court...lennon looked lively, had some good touches and was unlucky with a chip...Andros....Man On! was right a well taken goal! but as for his performance...let's just say it hasn't changed my opinion. We should take 12m from saints he might be able to carve out a decent career there or lower down but my fear is if we keep him, we'll wreck him as he's not up to level...Naughton cost us a pen that wasn't scored against Spam, tonight wins us a pen that wasn't scored...solid display. Kab's dominant and Vlad showed he has a good touch and close control...and still a tendency to get caught overplaying but solid enough and again working his way back to fitness....so a good run out, 90 mins in the legs of a lot who needed it - good calls by Poch....

Frank, Shedboy its all about opinions. Personally I see a player with massive upside and is very coachable. I said the same about Rose months ago and whereas hes still got bust potential the improvement in a few months is plain to see. Rose has been asked to defend first and foremost and play within a shape instead of being asked to be a poor mans Roberto Carlos by Timmy. When Townsend has been left out he almost tries too hard, is greedy and makes poor decisions. When he plays simply and waits for his moments like his cameo against Spammers theres a player there. Ask yourself with 20 mins left in chasing a game will he at the very least not have an impact and create a chance from somewhere. My main issue with the likes of Rose Townsend, Naughton Bentaleb etc is that they have caused so much contrasting debate it almost feels like fans on either side either dont want them to succeed or there is blinding praise to win a perceived argument Maybe I fall into the latter category at times although I try to be balanced.

Jamie O'Hara's contract with Wolves cancelled by mutual consent. A good player ruined by character weaknesses preventing him delivering on his potential. Not helped by his marital choice, very sad.

gatch - it is all about opinions...the game hinges on them. for me Andros has never shown anything other than flashes and they tend to be adrenaline, there is just so much that the boy doesn't have as his wasted golden opportunity tonight showed -teed up his shot almost hit the corner flag, caught in possession, taking the wrong option etc football intelligence is not easily coached and he's seriously lacking- the truth is he doesn't score or create anywhere near enough it's head down direct running and the directness is liked by quite a few but it's rarely dangerous...Rose is a converted winger and plays like one...where all the praise is coming from for this 'season' I don't know? he was poor against spam and didn't have much defending to do against QPR..and that is the season, 2 games! He can learn and can get better, having a Capoue in the team will help him no end as well. Bentaleb - is learning looks half decent nothing more should Sandro and Capoue really have been sitting on the bench instead of him last year!?....I want us to win and play as well as we can- if we can bring youngsters on slowly and if they are to the standard we need then great but I can't sit by and watch in silence (I gave andros 9 games last year despite knowing exactly what he'd do before the season started) while others players are getting it in Spades or sat in the dug out yet the main culprit is getting away scott free because he's a young HG....if you're good enough, you're old enough BUT if you're not good enough I don't care how old you are -you shouldn't be on the pitch when it matters....

4 games, 4 wins, conceding only 1 goal, an excellent start to the season. What we need to do now, is to pick the right team, play the right system, ensure we are all on top of our game, and beat Liverpool at WHL on Sunday. There is one thing for certain, this will be a stern test, the hardest game so far, and if we are not at our best, we will get beaten. I just hope we don't get embarrassed, in the way we did against top clubs last season, but I think that that is unlikely.

Fair point Shedboy. Funnily out of all the players mentioned Im more convinced about Bentaleb than any of the others. Id pick him before Sandro and I think he has an excellent future. That said there's no nailed on World beater they can all go either way. Key thing for me is there's big upside, and the ingredients in all of them to be coached & improve significantly. It doesnt nor should it apply to all HG players. Dean Marney Johhny Jackson for example were very much flash in the pans and quickly found they level. I dont think anyone saw them as long term first teamers even at the time. Rose and Townsend may not make the first 11 regularly but even if they are worthy squad members thats fine by me.

Frank, I think Poch needs to (IMO will) prepare them mentally. My guess is the team that played against QPR will mostly be the starting 11. This game will be a psychological barrier that the lads will have to prepare to overcome, just like the one against W Ham. Against W Ham (yes, the 1st game), there was some nervousness about the team. Lady luck was with us and we may need an element of that against Liverpool too. Having said that, the momentum of 4 wins will definitely help! COYS!

I must admit I am bricking it a bit about Liverpool. Our MF had the mother of roastings last year, I dont think I can remember a bigger shoeing in years. Even the City games weren't as lop sided.Every Facet of the game was a rout, from Daws being left 1 v 1 with Suarez, Paulinhos no show. All round carnage. Id take a draw hands down and Im hoping we look a more robust solid unit against a team who have players technical enough to mitigate our high press.

ItalianYiddo, I agree with what you said about Nabil. However, imo, Nabil fits our 'A' team better than any of the three on show y'day (Sandro, Dembele + Pauli) in that our 'A' team is more about SPEED. I felt our forward movement was not as quick as against QPR and both Limassol and QPR are comparable. I accept he is still learning and there will e times we need muscle and better ball retention. So I expect Nab to start and may be one of Dembele or Sandro to help tighten up things towards the end. Pauli seemed way off pace and his body language is yet to be sorted (whether it's fitness or trnafer related, I am not sure). COYS!

Sorry but I really must add my bit about Townsend last night. When playing on the right wing their LB had him in his pocket and most of our problems came down their left flank. When he and Lennon switched wings most of our problems came down their right flank. He lost possession of the ball so many times and allowed them to counter (what little they did). I hope I'm wrong, and as such I wont go so far as to say there's nothing in the bloke bar speed but, MP really has got a job on his hands to get something out of him. He definitely is not a TEAM player. Nearly every time he had the ball it was "head down, do a few step overs and then lose the ball" Back to shooting again when a team mate was better positioned, although one great shot that was on target and he took the penalty really well. £12 mill? Snatch Saints hand off as well, give us MS or JR and we'll give them some cash adjustment too. So yes to the poll!!!!!

Sandro was immense last night, great tackles well timed, smart use of the ball , inceptions all over the place and drove forward in to their box on regular basis. MOTM performance for me. I note the bentaleb discussion further up but a fully fit Capoue and Sandro together would be a daunting prospect for any team to break down!

Paulinho was quiet but did what was asked, pressed the ball and set up Kane's goal as a result and got his own goal from the same work ethic, Clearly not fully match fit and needs his confidence rebuilt but a very useful squad member. The work rate and pressing was great to see, the lack of positional interchange from the attacking three did hamper us slightly. Townsend was weak in the first half the penalty seem to restore some of his confidence and he improved noticeably after that. He struck me a slightly petulant early on and I'm not sure dropping him last week spurred him on to put in a performance to impress the manager perhaps he wants a move away?

Quick note about Vlad who I have been doubtful of, he looked far more composed last night playing on the left of CB, brought the ball forward well and good pass selection and what a bit of pressing for Pualinho's goal capped off with a cheeky back heel, which Lennon also tried earlier and nearly pulled off as well! He also had some robust challenges with the AEL boys and a couple of strong shoulders to knock the Cypriots off the ball in the first half.
Noughton won two penalties last night obviously he and Soldado should be played together! good command of the right wing if left slightly exposed by Townsend and what commitment to win the first penalty. Kane has been praised for all his work rate and rightly so but the most impressive part of his game was the penalty save didn't knock his confidence and he continued to boss the AEL box. Great player in the making and future Ireland striker!

I also am very happy to see Vlad emerge as a viable option at CB as we now have 5 senior CBs on the books, which as we learned two seasons ago is the number that is required for a sustained campaign. Kaboul Verts and Fozzy as first team options, Dier and Vlad and Veljkovic for Cups and Europa. Health competition will push all six players to improve! And if Kaboul moves on next summer then hopefully Veljkovic will be ready to step up. We now have a clearly line of progression in what has traditionally been our achillies heel!

Strange how Dembele snuck under the radar yet was involved in every attack, was always available as an out let and shimmied and swayed passed the Cypriots with ease. Looking at him play he strikes me as a player who doesn't know himself what he'll do when he receives the ball so must be a nightmare for the opposition to predict and defend! I thought there was a little bit of a lack of understanding between him and Paulinho but things improved when Paulinho drifted out left Lennon was willing but not really able, Left didn't really suit him, he was lost centrally and Townsend won't change in the first half. Good runs, tricky feet but still lacking in a threatening end product.

Excellent movement off the ball, lovely quick feet fot a big bloke and surprisingly can turn very well. Used his strength and first touch very well in tight situations and his passing was excellent. He still has a lot to learn but I loved his composure for his goal. I've seen talented strikers fluff chances like that (too much time to think) and a certain Gooner in the 90's was a gifted instinctive striker but when he had time on the ball was useless. COYS!

Besiktas looked strong against the gooners and were unlucky to be int eh Europa league at all! Don't know much about the other two only that Partizan have been Serbian champions 6 times int eh last eight seasons! And that they really have only been trading the title with Red Star. two team league? Asteras?? feck knows?? I never heard of them!

Overwhelming show from the fans, flares, chants it has to be seen really to get the idea. All designed to intimidate but ***** me it’s a sight to see, they deserve some respect. Sorry to be off topic, but am so glad we got shot of 'arry. Against us, he sat totally clueless, the tactical genius. Am very surprised Fernandes is risking an extention. I'd have got Hoddle to takeover instead. He was very fortunate to have inherited a good but demoralised squad with us. I am grateful for what he achieved but IMO his football model was not sustainable. He can bring a lot of short term excitement but has no long term plans. Modern age manager needs to be able to do more than sticking his neck out of a car window lapping up media attention. Good luck to him and QPR. IMO, they will be battling to avoid relegation. Last night game showed me that Holtby may be sacrificed, shame as he had the best pre season. I would still keep him but the lad wants to play and he didn't get a Europa game other than 10 mins which shows me he is down the pecking order.

kane is coming along and he showed his character after missing the penalty, well done.

Vlad looked decent on the left, may be he can play left side and he will be Vertonghen's back up, I will be happy with that.

Davies looked better. Lennon average but tried but I wasn't impressed with Townsend. He has a lot of work to do if he is to get a PL start. Chadli showed more in his first game against QPR than Townsend has shown in his games. Townsend when faced with a pacey defender struggles. Interesting how Lennon and Townsend are dropping out of the equation in the PL.

Sandro was very good, he was up for it and I would play him and Capoue against top teams especially away from home. he should stay.

Dembele looks trim and worked hard but again what does he give the team other than possession, does he create or score, No. Not good enough but decent squad player.

Paulinho I thought was better than previous games, he looked more relaxed and more up for it. He is better in as a forward player than a one of the two deeper midfielders, I would expect him to improve but whether he is going to be first choice at the moment I doubt. I think we are seeing the first eleven materalise now. I am unsure who will partner Capoue, but I think the forward line of Lamela, eriksen are certs and the other player to join them is up for grabs. Striker Ade seems to be the favourite to start in the PL. I think CB's is uncertain at the moment mainly die to dier doing better than we expected and now we have Fazio. Its all looking good.

Regarding the Europa league group, what's the feeling? Besiktas will be a decent side coming down from the CL, and only 1 goal between them and Arsenal over two legs in the play off round, Partizan Belgrade will be a good side, they always are, they will be dour and physical, and they come from a fairly strong league. Then we have Greek side Asteras, and I have to be honest and say, I've never heard of them, presumably they will be "the whipping boys" of the group, but you never know, I remember Greece winning the Euros against all the odds. We could have had a weaker group, and we could have had teams closer to home, in france or Italy or Spain, but at least there are no trips to Russia, Sweden or Northern Norway, after Xmas, when the weather is fit to freeze your bollox off.

Holy Shi7 we have signed or in the pipeline 24yr old Benjamin Stambouli, defensive midfield, god his quick across the ground, watched him a few times in the past future french international make no mistake, not one for scoring goals, but closing down players his excellent, tackles like Sandro, can pass with both feet and has amzing on the ball skills, we have just got a real gem, trust me this lad is good.

I think we should stop jumping the gun. Some reports say he hasn't decided yet, two offers have been accepted.
