Spurs v Juventus Preview

Spurs v Juventus Preview

A week prior to when the 2017/18 Premier League season kicks off Tottenham Hotspur test out the Wembley Stadium turf against last season's Champions League finalists, Juventus.

Premier Sports will beam live pictures into a UK TV screen near you, but only if you take out a subscription - £9.99 a month. The programme begins five minutes before kick-off - 5:25 BST.

If you live outside of the UK, or you're currently on your summer holiday, soaking up the sun on foreign shores then there are numerous countries showing the game. Tap / click here for a list of streams and TV stations.

Mauricio Pochettino

'This match will form an important part of our preparations, particularly with the Premier League season starting just a week later.

'We met Juventus in Australia during pre-season last year and it was a highly competitive game, very useful for us, and we expect a similar game this year at Wembley.'

Head to head

Tottenham and Juventus have met just the once and that was last summer in the International Champions Cup friendly competition when Juve won 2-1 (Paulo Dybala and Medhi Benatia). Erik Lamela did get one back.

Juventus are expected to field a strong starting XI - I expect Poch will realise this and do something similar.

Possible starting XI?

Spurs: Lloris; Vertonghen, Dier, Alderweireld; Trippier, Winks, Dembele, Davies; Dele, Eriksen; Kane

Juve: Buffon; De Sciglio, Chiellini, Rugani, Sandro; Khedira, Pjanic; Costa, Dybala, Bernardeschi; Higuain

Juventus promo

I'm not saying Spurs don't do this, however Juventus certainly know how to sell themselves.

Score prediction

My heart says we'll win but my head says something completely different.

Here goes...not that it matters, it's only a pre-season friendly.

Spurs 0-2 Juventus

COYS!

Would love to see a start for Walker-Peters for this one, so we can see how ready he is for first team action. No harm in giving Harrison a half-hour either!

I think this is about finding out if Onamah is good enough by giving him regular first team game time, as Wlker did when he went to Villa. If he wont get the minutes at Spurs, then it is a good move for all. Hopefully he shows he has the quality and mentality to come back and establish himself. As has been said it does mean we have lost 3 players from our squad now, Josh, Walker and Sissoko, so hopefully this is a sign that there will be some incomming soon.

Yes, I'm glad MP, knows what he wants ... I still blame MP for getting such a good 11 that it would require a special type of signing to dislodge a starter for us. 27 days left and we will know exactly where we stand.

Important pre-season match tomorrow. Fitness and comfort at Wembley being the prime focus. I expect our starters to get a good 65-70 minutes. Juve will likely do the same. Focus really is on next weekend.

On Onomah, I believe he is going to Villa so that he has the opportunity to play in the middle of the park. Reality is, at Spurs, he will not get opportunities to play in the middle as there are far too many people in front of him. Posh tried him on the wing, likely hoping it would solve an issue we have from within. He is just not a winger. I believe it is a great move for him, given the injuries to Villa players, and he will have to earn whatever he gets. Villa fans seem pretty happy and I think he will get his chance. Up to him whether it is taken or not.

On Baler, I cannot see it happening. I also cannot see a scenario where we could afford the transfer fee. If he is to come, it is because they need to balance off a purchase. On the wage side of things, he would have to accept a wage cut. That said, when he left, there were numerous sources saying we were prepared to pay him 180k/week to stay. So long as we up the weekly salaries of our main starters first, I think we could probably go in for about 200k/week for 3 or 4 years. He would be huge for marketing this year and going in to the new stadium. It would also be a huge sign of intent and a thumb in the eye of United and others. He would also be a huge help to us with more pace on the wing and on the free kick side of things. How much could Erikssen, Dier and others learn from him? How much is his CL experience worth? He is often injured (which is why I would not go above 200k/week), but he could be protected (60minutes in important games), play the CL games. If he were willing to come, I doubt there would be issues with Pochettino. If we get out of the group stages, is it not worth it? Given his past with Spurs, I feel that whatever it cost, we would see come back in revenues. We need to start winning. He carried us through stages of the CL before. He has won with RM. He is a returning Spurs player. Other than cost and the fact it is highly unlikely he would move, there really are not a lot of negatives

Now, to up the ante on the ridulocity (I know, not a real word) of this, what say we send RM 80M GBP for Bale and Kovacic. How would that go down as a record transfer for Spurs?

Spurs had a very good starting 11 with Walker but Tripper is not as good an all round defender and against top 6 PL teams and good CL teams his lack of pace and ability to dominate his direct opponent will be exposed. The fact that spurs have won nothing means that the team and coach both need to improve. Of course there are players who could have improved the first 11 or at least been top quality squad players. I am not a scout but B.silva and D.costa are players who could have improved the first 11/squad. Spurs squad looks light at the moment and i expect some signings, but i am not happy with leaving it late as players need time to get used to a new environment. The chances of hitting the ground running is reduced if player doesn't get a full pre season.

I think that Trippier deserves a season before we jump all over him. He did well at Burnley which was why we bought him. He did well last season when he played. IMO, he is better positionally than Walker and is far better at delivering crosses. Walker's speed saved him when he was way out of position and some of his blunders were incomprehensible. Anyway, moving forward it is Trippier and I expect we'll be just fine.

Peterballb, I agree about Trippier. It is a natural tendency with fans to praise a player when given rare opps and performing, but a regular run and few average performance and the knives are out!. One has to remember that with seemingly assured of a starting birth, he'd be under spot light and he hasn't done much yet. The other thing is that our forwards have to adapt and make earlier runs in the 18 yd box in anticipation. With Walker around, we usually played our way in to the box. But the real issue I have is that we are (as it stands) totally bereft of pace in the team. Hope to see that addressed. COYS!

I can't believe that anybody thinks that a team that wins nothing, fails to get out of the groups in either the CL and the EL last season, is beyond improvement. Yes we have a good and improving first 11, some exciting players, and some youngster with potential, but both the team and the coach have yet to learnt to win, and we have a moderate back up squad devoid of game changers, or realistic selection alternatives to our most influential players. We lack cover for injuries or form loss, and we are unable to rotate without a loss in quality. We have a back up striker, who doesn't strike, no competition or cover for either Eriksen or Ali, and we kid ourselves that we can mix it with the best with Academy graduates who are largely untried, and the odds dictate will largely fail to progress as most young players fail to do. You only have to scan the lower PL clubs, and Leagues 1 & 2 and The National League to see them littered with failed Spurs youngsters from the past. The long and the short of it is we should have been signing at least 3 players in this window early enough to blood them in (a Striker, Pacy wide player, quality MFer) we will, or should, play 50+ games this season in the PL and 3 KO competitions, so everybody will get opportunity, as well as the need to cover injuries and suspensions, and of course simple form fluctuations will be a factor. With regards to who those players are, we have or are supposed to have specialist recruiters to sort that out, always assuming they stay around long enough (Paul Mitchell) to be able to do the job without interference. We have £40-50M from the Walker sale, the proceeds from Fazio, Benteleb and sundry moves, the Sky money (£100M+) that has inflated the market, and the 2nd place prize pay out. The two major myths being peddled in the window are 1) we can't improve our squad. Granted the first 11 would be difficult, but the squad, come on let's be serious. We are involved in a 25 man squad game with 14 or 15 who are good enough to fully compete. 2) That we can't afford to sign any decent players, that is so ludicrous and unbelievable as to being beyond comment. This means the reasons why we have refused to get involved in the market is firstly that we are too good to bother, and that we are skint. We are now in the minority of 1 of clubs not to sign anybody, not a £50M player, nobody not even a squad player. Lastly with all the allied property sales, sponsership, grants and handouts, naming rights etc.etc. how much do we think the stadium will actually cost ENIC in hard cash, bearing in mind that it will be them that benefit from an inflated purchase price, when they stick the club on the market in the future. People of Joe Lewis's ilk don't plunge into investments of this magnitude without ensuring a very very lucrative return. It also appears that the claim that the stadium account and the football club accounts were separate and independent, is an untruth, this transfer window would suggest otherwise.

Frank .... I think most people are saying it would be difficult to improve the starting eleven because they play so well TOGETHER. But most of us are agreeing with you that we need to add more depth to the squad if we want to compete on so many fronts. There is still plenty of time for this to be addressed in this TW. I think!

I don't want Bale and I don't want him back in PL at a rival club - so I hope he sees out his years at RM or whoever abroad.

Bale was my idol I loved him and he let me down. He pushed a move I except that, but I cannot except his sub at the end of last season. Not coming to the lane to say goodbye, if he couldn't make it fair enough, but no message until after the fact some weeks later - very poor. He didn't love Spurs, he loved the glory that he got at Spurs, I thought he was different, he wasn't, isn't, most players love the adulation, glory and money, simple.

I just hope we don't have another player the same in Dele, will his head be turned, will Eriksens, will Kanes. Out of the three I think kane is the one who wouldn't have his head turned, well not yet, but not so sure about Eriksen or Dele, and most of the other players. I hope I am wrong and they stick around and I hope we get some bloody signing in soon. This squad was not strong enough at times last years. The bench players have done nothing in pre season to show me they will be better this season, may be GK in glimpses, and the youngsters have not shown me anything to prove they are ready to step up, so do the maths, we are still not strong enough. Adc Wembley into the factor, and the selling of Walker, Onamah on loan, Sissoko probably going we are even weaker, so where are the signings to make us stronger??????.

For me we need to keep ALL our best players in the next month and bring in three quality players to improve on last season, to take Sissoko and now Onamah and Walkers places at least.

I don't see us winning today, I just hope for a good performance, improvement from last two games and hope we don't get thrashed.

E17, Sorry mate but your repeated question to Frank and others "please advise of the players whom we should get in" is a silly one imo. We ALL acknowledge the need to improve our depth and we ALL agree the team lacks pace. If someone makes a suggestion on a player, then they are larfed at 'cos it costs too much, if someone doesn't recommend a player (me included) they apparently have no reason to criticise the club. I personally agree with Frank as his underlying point is always consistent, though (sorry Frank), it is repetitive, nonetheless valid. Frank or other posters/fans are NOT in the know, nor are they scouts or manager who are paid handsomely to ensure the squad is built and developed as part of the project (continuous improvement). We are not privy to the finances, transfer budget, Poch's exact requirement, etc. So, even speculating by us is no different to the media guessing. Frank imo is fair in his assessment but should now start focusing on enjoying the season, come what may. Hope he is looking forward to the game later on. COYS!

All opinions DA, so no worries. I think pace needs to be qualified. Yes, we can turn defence in to attack by slick passing and great positional play which imo gives the impression that we have pace. I think most of us refer to pace as someone who can carry the ball at pace, take on players at pace or defend using pace. Sure, positional sense and chemistry can overcome this 'need'. IMO, the pace will give us another option. IMO, one of the reasons we have far too much sideways and backwards movement is lack of pace up front or on the wings. Against City, we couldn't get out of our own half, but I felt N'Koudou and Georegiu mad a difference for us. May be we need more players with names ending with 'U' :0)

As for suggesting which players we should sign...imo, at the start of summer, there were numerous names banded about here, including some from Frank. However, as soon as the big price labels became evident, most, like the management, have gone pretty quiet with their recommendations. It's now a case of what is left, what is affordable and who can make the required improvement. I think any suggestions from us fans is likely to be way off the mark at this late stage. Media too are struggling to link us with any one!

Sissoko may just stay you know, but I don't rate him. However, if he plays to his strengths and potential like in Euros then he would be like a new signing, but will he, can he, has last season finished him off?.

I like pacey players myself, loved Defoe and Lennon, like Walkers pace but never rated highly as a defender although he got better under Poch, one of my favourite defenders who lacked pace was Corluka, it worked fine because we had Lennon who had pace in front of him who tyracked back. I think that is what we need with Trippier if he is to be first choice, othertwise I think we need a pacey RB to compliment Trippier and to compete in different games.

I wouldn't like Lamela on the right with Trippier has Lamela loses the ball a lot and that will put Trippier under pressure and could be caught out due to his lack of pace.

Anyway lets see what happens today and see how Sissoko does.

Is there any coverage, tv or radio

I think we might do well in Serie A. Better all round performance against a team that gave us time and space to play. Sight of Trippier in a medical boot was not good and underlines the lack of depth in the squad. Dier again tried to give them a goal...he is making at least one serious error per game at the moment.

Good performance and result, but at what cost? Our paper thin squad maybe under pressure for the very first PL game. We have sold Walker and have Trippier as first choice, no probs with that, but behind him we have KWP a kid, wet behind the ears, not ready for a top 2 challenging PL team. This is exactly the scenario some of us have warned about all window, and applies to other positions as well. We have 3 weeks to get our act together, will we, I doubt it.

I only got to see the extended highlights but Sissoko looked to have a damn fine game. Would be a real bonus if he actually stayed and played well. Looked like an exciting game. Someone mentioned that we had a lot of space to play in and I would propose that that is one of the characteristics of the Wembley pitch size. It's difficult to park the bus there. Nice result to take into the season. I didn't see anything on Trippiers injury so I'm gonna do some reading now to see what I can find out.

Seeing Rose out injured and Walker gone, Poch is opting for 4 at the back. TBH, I am beginning to think that will suit us at Wembley. If someone had asked me now, out of Walker and Dier, who I'd have sold....I would've let go of Dier. Going 4 at the back suits our 4 slow players.

I enjoyed the win and was happy to see the key players getting another 75 mins under their belt. Couldn't quite see the benefit of bring two subs on with a minute to go..in a friendly....wot's that all about? Goals were a delight and well worked out. Defence was suspect at times, especially corners (nothing new there), Still plenty of backwards and sideways. I suspect the 'friendly' game served it's purpose, Trippier's injury being an exception.

Well, from we 'must sign' let's see what action or statement comes next from the management.

Haven’t read through the thread yet but .... it was absolute rubbish! I expected much more at this stage of the pre-season. Couldn’t finish, couldn’t defend, couldn’t pass, and were a totally inferior football team in every department. But that’s enough about Juve, the team who has won the Italian title 6 years in a row and played in the last CL final. We, on the other hand, were brilliant. Everyone played well, the team picking up from where it left off last season. Juve missed a couple of scoring opportunities but we missed even more, hitting the woodwork twice. Three-nil would have been a far better reflection of the game (does 3-0 ring any bells). Even Sissoko was good. He won back possession at the very start of the move for the first goal!! Both goals were lovely to watch ... again, and again, and again. Doesn’t this team love playing at Wembley? But it doesn’t mean anything because it’s just a friendly. Although, after this back-to-our-best display, I now expect us to win the League, FA Cup, League Cup, Champions League, and the Americas Cup. I hope I’m not getting too carried away or being too unrealistic but, If we don’t win at least 6 of those 5 competitions, I’ll join Frank and be calling for heads!! The new season cometh. Bring it on. Gotta love football.

After seeing Sissoko play yesterday I now have grave doubts about the veracity of the Trabzonspor discussion in the media. Thinking about it he seems to have that Adebayor characteristic of being a lazy ******** when nothing is on the line. However he does have something on the line this season, doesn't he. He needs to have a major season in order to retain or regain his place in the French team of the World Cup next summer. I think we will see the player we paid for this season and a move away may be highly unlikely. This has two benefits for Spurs. 1. We bolster the club big time if he performs at his best and 2. his value next transfer window increases significantly.

jvd - Re Sissoko, I think he ought to stay although I don't rate him from Newcastle days and last season with us, but Euro's he was good. It may be true he may be a player with a ego problem, thinking he can just turn up and play, and only performs when its suits him (something to play for). May be last season has shook him up with the high demands of Poch and hardly playing and us coming 2nd - may be he realises doesn't matter what talent you have, you earn a place and may be his ego will serve him this season to prove a point to us fans and the manager? If it does and he stays and fights for his place and performs then its a win win situation. He will be better of doing that than playing in Turkey, fight and play his bit in our team and he will get into Frances team which is what he wants.

If he comes good I will support him, there is still hope and time.

My verdict: Watched match which was decent in parts, lucky in some but good performance overall and good result,

From pre season I conclude: Non of the youngsters are ready for first team footy in the PL other than possibly a few minutes here and there. In the cups then may be if opposition is of lower league. I expect Winks to pick up from where he left off last season but may take time to get up to scratch. GK not sure, probably see him in cups and odd appearences towards end of games.

I can't see Janssen doing it, and I expect more of the same if he stays, he isn't likely to get many chances if Kane stays fit and I think he is a player that needs games to get into the swing of things, not a impact sub, may be ok as a sub if we are winning three nil and want to rest Kane for last 15mins. If we keep him I think we are going to look to Son for Kanes backup, which is didgy as he can be inconsistent and he has missed pre season. Still think we need a striker.

KWP is not going to be backup for Trippier, watching him showed glaring inadequecies which he want get away with in the PL. His positional sense is woeful, he drifts inside almost into a CB position leaving the flank free and he isn't anywhere near ready to be backup. So now we have no real RB with Trippier injured. My guess is Dier will take that role while Trippier is out and we will have to bring in another RB who can compete with Trippier and let KWP train with the first team and learn his trade better.

Looking at the squad there are concerns, RB as mentioned but CB because we relay too much on Toby and Verts, CV isn't ready, but will be fine in cup games and Wimmer heart doesn't seem to be in it, I think he wants to go to play. I would say a good CB who can play either side is needed if Wimmer goes.

LB is fine if Rose gets over his injury and comes back in the right mind set. Lamela would be a welcome, but we don't know what will happen there, even if he gets fit, he is going to be rusty and where is his mind after such a dreadful year of injury and lets face it he has problem after problem since moving here. So we can't count on him yet.

I think we need four players, three minimum. RB, CB, Striker and a creative winger midfielder. I am still not convinced of Sissoko although he was better yesterday.

Now it's over to Poch and Levy, with less than four weeks to go before TW ends. We now have Son unfit, Lamela and Rose still recovering, Wanyama and now Trippier with recent injuries, we cannot afford anymore.

I think it is fair to say that we all believe that Sissoko, Nkoudou and Janssen were below what we expected last season. I also think it is fair to say that those three players have come back with a point to prove. Yes, it is just preseason. Add Lamela to that mix and we have 4 players who could add to the depth that we lacked last season. Not suggesting for a second that we should not be adding players, but, If we have Lamela, Sissoko and Nkoudou all putting in the effort and delivering results, we will not have the lack of wing effect we lacked last season. It would also allow us to rely less on Dele, Erikssen and Son while having some offensive threat in League Cup and to spell players off for the last half hour when we have games in hand. We still need CB/RB cover. Pereira is a player who could fill that void. He's surely not the only one out there. Wimmer is too slow. Dier worries me when he is part of the back three of filling in at CB. Too many poor passes. He looks far more assured in MF. Still like the idea of going in for Van Dijk. Would annoy Liverpool and would give Southampton an out as they don't want to sell to the team that tapped him up. Wimmer in return and we play a monster back 3 at times which would allow a winger to play instead of a fullback. Thus coverage through formation.

Also on Sissoko, if he wants to make the French WC squad, he needs to perform. Perhaps this is the motivation needed to get him going. He may also have a point to prove against Newcastle so there could be lots of motivation to get him playing to his potential. Given past history, I don't expect the motivation to continue on for years, but, I would be prepared to offer him the chance. He just needs to earn it. If he does, Spurs and Sissoko both win.

I think what was significant also was that the two goals were both scored from within 8 yards of the goal, or less. Many were beginning to worry that we could only score from beyond the penalty area. This will be a very busy week for Poch and the players as they get the final preparations done for the season. Here's hoping that Trippier is a minor worry.

I know a lot has been said about a lack of speed (and I'm not disagreeing) but there are two ways of looking at it. You can have fast players or you cane move the ball quickly. Our first goal against Juve showed how fast we can break as a team with some decisive passes, and how the end product of swiftly putting the ball into the box can make scoring look so easy. On the other hand, how many times did Walker fly down the wing only to check and play the ball back. I don't see the way we play as being particularly slow.

Just an observation... Was Sissoko given a free role? He often seen on the LHS and I wondered if he and Eriksen were switching positions. If he does stay, hope he now knows what is required from him and it wasn't just a shop window performance. Would be like a new signing if he performed consistently. COYS!
