UEFA Champions League Group Stages Draw

UEFA Champions League Group Stages Draw

The 2017/18 Champions League draw takes place in Monaco, tomorrow, Thursday 24 August at 5pm BST.

Could it be six?

Liverpool, who are 2-1 up from the UCL Qualifying Play-Off First Leg take on 1899 Hoffenheim at Anfield this evening. Having said that and with the turmoil within the Scousers dressing room could they surprise many of us and manage to hold on to their slender lead?

Celtic, who qualified last night could be joined by the Dippers and represent the UK with a total of six clubs. Is this a record?

Group games

The group stage games are split into six matchdays:

12-13 September: matchday one
26-27 September: matchday two
17-18 October: matchday three
31 October-1 November: matchday four
21-22 November: matchday five
5-6 December: matchday six

We know Tottenham cannot be put into the same pot as Manchester United, Manchester City, Chelsea or possibly Liverpool but, the English teams could end up in the same group as Celtic, similar to Manchester City last season.

Our last campaign didn't exactly go according to plan however, I'm confident Poch will have learned from the experience.

Will this be OUR year?

Well, it does have a one in it.

Im reading we in pot3 (was hoping we would be in pot2), along with Liverpool, City and Utd in pot 2, Chelsea in pot 1, we could get a very tough group
23/08/2017 10:38:00
So the draw is as follows: we will get one of Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, Juventus, Benfica, Shaktar Donetsk, Monaco and Spartak Moscow from pot 1 (we should be hoping to avoid the first 3 at least, but Donetsk and Moscow would be the better draws). We will be drawing either Barcelona, Atletico Madrid, PSG, Borussia Dortmund, Sevilla or Porto from a brutal pot 2 (fingers crossed for Porto). Pot 4 will offer Celtic, Maribor, Feyenoord, and the winners of Slavia Prague/APOEL Nicosia, Copenhagen/Qarabag, Steua Bucharest/Sporting Lisbon, CSKA Moscow/Young Boys (this is assuming Liverpool qualify). At best, our group will look like this: Spartak Moscow, Porto, Spurs, APOEL Nicosia. At worst, it could be Bayern Munich, Barcelona, Spurs, Sporting Lisbon. Scary.

Great summary Belgian. We got luck last year. Will we be so lucky this year. Having said that, although we got the weakest pot 1 team last year, we got by far the strongest pot 4 team in Monaco. My prediction - Shaktar, Dortmund and Copenhagen COYS
23/08/2017 12:18:00
Last year we had an easy group this year will be tougher imo
24/08/2017 09:55:00
Easy group lead to a touch of complacency last season, and ultimately failure. Tough group this tome around would keep us on our toes, and less pressure... But it would be HARD....
24/08/2017 13:45:00
Real and Dortmund we got so far
24/08/2017 17:33:00
Well back to the EL
24/08/2017 17:55:00
Tsk, tsk, tsk, giving up before even trying, great attitude!!! To dare is to do, am I right ?
24/08/2017 18:05:00
...well, we wanted to be in the game.... NOW we are in the game! Cannot be in CL and not face the giants from time to time... Playing these guys is an opportunity to get to the next level.
24/08/2017 18:50:00
Exactly Tony, the real test is here now, let's see how far we have come, yes to date is to do but we don't follow that motto, our lack of trophies prove that.
24/08/2017 18:58:00
To dare
24/08/2017 18:59:00
Real M are a problem, but Dortmund finished 3rd in Bundesliga behind Leipzig. We finished 2nd in EPL. We should not fear them, but respect that they are more experienced in CL than us. We need to target them, and take points from them. Get out of the group, and we would be very ready for the knockout phase.... But let's concentrate on the group first!
24/08/2017 19:18:00
Great draw from the spectating point of view. I hope we at least put up decent displays in all the games. Frankly, it looks a bridge too far but will be great experience if we can retain ECL place for next season. We need reinforcements now, at least one attacking option with pace, but rumour is Balde is no longer of interest to us.

I fancy our chances to go through this time. The players will want to put things right after last season but I actually think they will be so up for it being RM that the momentum of playing them will help them beat the other two teams and we will go through as second place. I really feel we will do it this time round. I would feel better if we had a couple more players added to our squad who can push and vack up our first team. I also fancy us taking points of RM in one game
25/08/2017 02:04:00
On our day we will give anyone a game. The only thing I'm worried about is that if we are well beaten, that will hardly do much to quiet down the speculation that our top players might be looking to leave for bigger, better things. If we hold our own and match RM and Dortmund, it will be confirmation that we are a club on the up, and it might convince our best players that THFC is a club going places. If we get crushed, that + the wage discussion could precipitate some departures. Big season ahead.
