Harry Kane Plays A Blinder

Harry Kane Plays A Blinder

Its official, Harry Kane can't score a goal for love nor money in August - he even admitted it himself. On the other hand and as soon as September comes around everything changes.

Harry scored twice against Malta in last night's World Cup Group F qualifier to help England step closer to next year's tournament in Russia. In the end the Three Lions netted four, without reply.

Malta 0-4 England Match Stats

Harry Kane - 53 mins.

Harry bangs in his second and England's fourth - 90+2.

Post match

Captain Jordan Henderson and Harry.

Man of the Match for me was simple - Harry Kane. He has touch and awareness which is first-class. In addition I think, sorry, I know he is one of the best centre-forwards in the world right now.

Dele Alli

Jamie Vardy replaced Dele after his gruelling 70 minute slog in the heat and humidity. One of his best moves was when he made a slick pass to Harry for the opening goal.

His overall performance wasn't too shabby but at times found in hard-going in the midfield.

Neither Harry nor Dele picked up any injury niggles, which in itself is an added bonus.

Here's a deep and insightful quote .... 'Southgate tips Kane for the top'. Wow, talk about betting on a sure thing. Gareth, my son, Kane's already at the top! Try and keep up, mate.

I went to the Malta game. The game was about the worst 90 mins of the whole weekend and that includes the waiting around in airports :-)

Let's hope Harry scores again tonight and that form translates to goals for THFC. We need to get back to winning ways sooner rather than later. For Belgium, Jan had a great game while captaining the side against Greece. The victory means Belgium are the first European team to qualify for next year's World Cup. Toby's performance was below par (several misplaced passes, poor control, individual mistakes), and Dembele never manages to replicate his club form for his country. He seemed frustrated and his typically accurate passing was spotty. He struggled against Greece's fast midfielders and had to resort to chopping them down to stop them. He was eventually booked and withdrawn soon after, after coming very close to a red card. I will only remember the result and not the manner! You can't argue with Roberto Martinez' record since taking over, but Belgium still seem one class below France or Germany when those teams are at their best. Belgium have the talent to match any team, but something still isn't clicking with Martinez and the team still rely on individual brilliance too much. That talent should take them to the quarters (like at Euro 2016 and WC 2014), but whether they can go further remains to be seen. They need to find another gear.

Muttley I disagree - Georgia v Rep of Ireland was the worst 90 minutes of football I can recall. It was absolutely turgid. Ireland scored after 3 minutes and spent the next 91minutes with 10 men camped inside their own box and just swinging boots at the ball anytime it came near them. I think the boys in green managed to string four passes together at one point in the game (our best passing move - it got the ball from the keeper to the Ciaran Clark who knocked it wide to Cyrus Christie, who played a deft pass into Glen Wheelan - who lumped up the pitch to the Georgian keeper! Disgraceful performance from an international side - I'd be fuming if my 10 year old's team played like that on a Sunday!

The first half v Malta was abysmal, and that included every England player irrespective of all club affiliations and preferences and excuses, and if we don't improve in the next game v Slovakia, we could get beat, as they are somewhat better than Malta, who are after all on a par with a decent EFL Championship side. Hopefully now that Harry has got a couple under his belt, he will set off in the PL, because our results up until now suggest the sooner he does the better, as 4 points from the first 9 is not great.

Who are the 7% comedians who have nominated Jansson as the first Spurs player to score 10 PL goals this season and Lloriente has no nominations whatsoever. Jansson won't play except possibly for 5 mins here and there as a su, we would have to get a lot of late penalties for him to be the first to 10.

Eriksen scored his 1st freekick in 2 years vs Armenia. Hopefully he can get close to his 1 in 11 games ratio from his early days at the club.

I just look forward to everyone coming back and performing for THFC now. Holidays are over! Back to work, and back to terrorising opposing teams please. It will be a very interesting test against Everton this weekend. They are one of the teams trying to bridge the gap with the top 6, and the additions of Rooney, Sandro Ramirez, Klaasen, Sigurdsson, Pickford and Keane have injected a lot of talent in the squad, even if they don't have Lukaku's goals anymore. Their 11 will be even better when Coleman comes back. They certainly have a team that can cause problems, so we'll need to be sharp.

If only Alli played as well for us as he did last night what a difference it would make. If Harry ever learns to trap a bag of cement and pass to colleagues in better positions he will truly become great. Dier took his goal well but was still lazy and out of position several times last night. Very frustrating as the lad has great potential but he isn't realising it yet. Looking forward to the Everton game which will be a good test for us. A lot of our players have been away on International duty Including Sanchez against Brazil. Not sure about Aurier but will be interesting to see who is in the squad for the week-end.

Well Guyver, here's something just for you. Watched Colombia vs Brazil and Sanchez had a reasonable game in a 1-1 draw. I don't think the physical aspects of the PL will worry him much as the game was brutal with both sides dishing it out. He managed to dump Alves off the pitch one time and made a few good interceptions. Looked promising. He played as the left side of a back 3.

Also, I haven't seen many positives so far this season. I know we can produce great football but we haven't so far. Comments regarding Alli, Kane and Dier are just constructive suggestions as far as I am concerned.

Harry-Kari - When you say "If Harry ever learns to trap a bag of cement and pass to colleagues in better positions he will truly become great.", that's where you set yourself up for a bit of stick. First of all, Harry has scored 75 goals in the last 3 seasons, arguably in the best league in the world. At what point do you consider him to be "great"? By most standards, he's already there and one of the top 5 strikers in the world. Second, all great strikers are greedy. How often does Ronaldo pass the ball when he has a sight of goal? Or Lewandowski? Finally, slating Harry for his lack of pace, for example, would be harsh, but could at least be relevant. Slating his inability to trap a ball, when in reality he is technically sound, and has many times controlled balls which were hard to deal with, that's completely unfair. Maybe had had a below-par game against Slovakia, but I don't think he needs to learn anything about ball control. One bad game doesn't make him a bad player. Unfair criticism is never constructive, in my opinion.

So, to summarise, Harry has brilliant ball control, Alli played the same for England as he has done for us so far this season and Dier was solid. Good to know although I am beginning to worry about my eyesight.

Harry-Kari, if Messi was a Spurs player, you would be saying how weak he is in the air. No Kane isn't Zidane, but he's better technically than lukaku and scores as many goals too. Dele almost always does play that well for us, thats why he's an England regular aged 21. I think you've conflated constructive criticism with pointless criticism. The Rebrov days weren't that long ago... wheres your perspective?

Harry-Kari, I wouldn't worry about the eyesight with your incredible ability to spot a perceived negative that is almost completely inconsequential in the grand scheme of things.

Harry, well you've certainly set the bar for greatness quite high if Messi is the benchmark, only 1 or 2 players every generation qualify!

I'd argue that Messi isn't even really a striker, so there you go. If you were to define the characteristics of a perfect, prototypical number 9, Messi wouldn't be near it. Where is the power? The heading ability? A wonderful goalscorer, arguably the most creative player of all time, but also a player who thrives in a specific system, but struggles unless the team is built around his strengths (as his performances with Argentina showed when they were trying to get the best out of him, Higuain and Aguero at the same time). Going back to the original discussion, I didn't even watch England v. Slovakia, but I would just be reluctant to accept that Kane is technically poor just because he may or may not have had one poor game with England. Lukaku is technically poor, and there is 5 years of evidence of that. I have seen Kane do Cruyff turns to beat 3 defenders in the box, and go on to score. You don't do that if you have poor ball control. I just don't understand how someone can be so definitive on the back of one game, when there are 3 years of evidence proving otherwise. Dier may have been shaky against Slovakia, but he also scored in that game, so it couldn't have been that bad. Alli has scored 2 goals in 21 England games, and 30 goals in 73 for THFC, so it's clear that he struggling to replicate his club form for his country. But he wouldn't be the first player that this happens to. As I said earlier in the thread, look no further than Mousa Dembele for another culprit.

Guyver, I agree the bar is very high to be called great. Belgian I did not say that Harry did a bad game against Slovakia, just highlighted what I see as some recurring minor issues with his game which if improved would move him up a level as a player. These are things that happen consistently not just in one game. In my view he rarely manages to hold the ball up when played to him from defence as his first touch is usually heavy. To be fair this may be due to having his feet kicked from behind by defenders on some occasions, but often he loses the ball. Similarly with playing in other players on goal. Yes his job is to score goals, and yes he is very good at that, but there are also many opportunities where others could score but he chooses to shoot and doesn't score. Of course it is easy watching on television and for someone like myself who does not, and never did, possess 100th of Harry's skill to see these things and criticise but if he improves in both these areas then so will the team. Regarding other comments, I agree that Harry is better than Lukaku, if Messi is not a striker then neither was Jimmy Greaves. The role of striker is to score goals in whatever team they are playing in and how they score them is irrelevant. Regarding Alli and Dier I'm not the only one who thinks that their performances for us so far this season have been sub-optimal to put it politely. It doesn't mean I don't want them to play for us, just play up to their abilities.
