Real Madrid vs Tottenham Hotspur

The Daily Express says that( http://www.express.co.uk/sport/football/866916/Real-Madrid-vs-Tottenham-tactics-Pochettino-Champions-League) Poch has vowed to get on the front foot instead of parking the bus when we play Real Madrid on Tuesday. Poch intends to stay true to Tottenham`s attacking principles and will attempt to make a game of it. "We will try to dominate," he said. We will try to be better, but it`s a massive challenge for us to dominate them. We will press high, try to play in the opposition`s half, try to be aggressive and brave. "That`s how we feel football should be played. If they try to push us back deeper, then OK, we may have to adapt to their quality. But from the beginning we will be brave and aggressive and play to win the game." He added: "Everyone in football chooses their way to play. Football is so open with so many ideas and you must respect every way. But if you ask me, we are going to Madrid to play football and be Tottenham. "We do not change because we are playing in Madrid." Poch insists he has the team to justify the hype around them and prove that they are worthy of sharing a stage with the Champions League winners in three of the last four seasons. But, do we have a side that can perform better than the 2011 side that went down 4 - 0 at the Bernabéu. We have never beaten Real Madrid but we have only ever met them 4 times in 2011 and the Europa in 1984.

Whatever we do, however we play this game, it was always going to be looked upon as a defeat. We therefore have nothing to lose. All players dream of games like this, it`s what you become a professional footballer for, to have evenings at the Santiago Bernabéu in front of a packed ground to play the best club side in Europe if not the world. But they are not invincible Levante and Valencia and Real Betis have shown that. Yes, against Dortmund they beat them away 3-1 but we had the measure of the German side as well.

Real will be all attack, they will be technically better than us and the game will probably focus down on how we compete in our final 3rd. We don`t have anything like the speed in attack that Real do, since Walker went and Rose has been crocked we have had nothing in the way of potency out wide. We are still waiting on Aurier to show a clean pair of heels to his opposing left back so with inferior speed we have no option but to close down every bit of space. When you look at their line up there is no position on the pitch that doesn`t wreak with class; Ronaldo - Benzema - Asensio - Ramos - Isco Modric and of course Bale. Bale may not play but Karim Benzema returns from injury and Marcelo and Theo Hermandez are also available again. Toni Kroos has also recovered from a rib problem. It will be a formidable line up with or without Bale

All we can do is close them down, be patient, because we won`t have the ball for long periods of the game. Christian Eriksen summed it up on Sky Sports (http://www.skysports.com/football/news/11675/11083373/christian-eriksen-relishing-real-madrid-showdown-in-champions-league). Eriksen knows what it`s like to take on "Los Blancos", having played them twice with Ajax during the Champions League group stage in 2012. Ajax lost both ties 4-1 but five years on, Eriksen believes Spurs are equipped to do better. 'You need quality and belief. I think we have both so I don't think we should be scared of anything,' he told Sky Sports. 'I haven't won there yet so I need to change something. Of course it's a special stadium, a special place". 'Playing against Real will always be special for any footballer with the history they have and the players there so it will be a good test, to see how far we've really come.' But Eriksen says Spurs, on the back of third and second-place finishes in the Premier League, have shown they can go toe-to-toe with the best. 'I think we've shown it in the Premier League,' he continued. "Overall with the consistency over the last two seasons, we've definitely proved that we are a team that will hopefully have a very nice and very tough game at the Bernabeu."

All we can hope is that we give it a go and give them a game and not ship too many goals, a draw will feel like a win but a close game will show how far we have really come under Pochettino. We will know for sure just how World class players like Eriksen and Kane are against a truly World class team it`s a pity Dele Alli had to miss this one maybe it will make him realise he has to reign it in a bit. Its show time folks! let`s hope we put on a show!

A draw won't feel like a win, it would effectively be a win. With two to qualify and Dortmund having already lost once to us and Real it will put the Germans under tremendous pressure.

TBH, my ONLY concern for this game is the temperament of the players. Spanish league, especially RM and Barca and renowned for feigning calamitous injuries from the slightest touch. They seem to think getting the opposition players booked and sent off is a win in itself. Just take a look at the celebrations when Crouchy was sent off...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=69IfPMXfUac

Just stay calm and composed and stick to our game plan (that includes you Aurier....if your starting!). Hope Dele is repenting his foolish sending off in the CL and learns from it. I'd take a draw right now. But, RM are no where near their usual best with some injuries. COYS!

I think that the Dortmund game is a perfect example of how we should approach this game. Be in control and take advantage of what the game gives you on the counter. I would set the team up to frustrate Real and try to capitalise on our chances on the counter. We'll create a few.

Here's some boring information: In La Liga, Real have virtually the same record as Spurs do in the PL. W5 D2 L1., 17 points. Same goals for, 15 but 2 more goals against, 7. They are 5 points off the top, as we are, albeit in 2nd place to Spurs' 3rd.

I probably will miss the game so just wishing the best to the lads and supporters alike. One factor that is overlooked is that Madrid is approximately 2000ft above sea level and this will have a small but discernible impact on the players' performance (unless they have been in an altitude tank ). The stadium is physically imitating as are the crowd and I hope the lads don't freeze on the night. As Poch has acknowledged, they have individually superior players to us in many positions so we will have to really play a good team game to compete. If we do lose I hope it is on the back of a good performance rather than an abject inability to play. I thought we could win the last time we played there until Crouch went mad so let's hope we do better this time.

If we need to look to the bench to change this game it needs to happen with at least 25 minutes playing time to go. Substitutes need 5 minutes to settle into the game and get their second wind, and 20 minutes to be effective.

We must try & close them down & not allow them to dictate the play.Easier said than done ,but Isco is their playmaker so it's crucial to not give him time to breathe. Ronaldo is Ronaldo ,not much you can do about him except pray! I'm so excited to watch games like this .This should be a beautiful game as opposed to the rubbish Liverpool & Utd served up on Saturday.

RM are an open footballing team, they give up enough chances to lose, however, they create double the chances down the other end and usually win. Spurs players have to be confident on the ball and be willing to take it to RM when they can. Midfield is the key area for spurs the CM must be willing to posses the ball and bring it forward not just pass it to the nearest player as RM will press if Spurs players play safety passes and become predictable. Spurs can get a draw 2-2. Coys

Juicy game is what comes to mind, lets hope it is and we compete whatever the outcome and if we lose I hope our heads don't drop for the next Pl game and return leg. We have to realistic but we have to be clever and brave.

My heart says we can get something from this game, my head says we can't - so nothing changes there.

RM are favourites but teams do score against them and you never know, if we are clinical we could cause an upset, but most important thing is to compete be brave and not fall apart if we go behind.

i am going for a 2-2 draw and if we do that i will be delighted even if we play rubbish, because a point there would be great whatever the performance.Key man for me is Eriksen and Kane for different reasons. Eriksen needs to impose hhimself something he has regularly done against top teams, and Kane needs to boss, hussle and be clinical.

Key player in midfield, whoever plays, my guess Dier will play, he has to really work hard and be concentrated, put a foot in, and if Winks, or Dembele play they have to equally be prepared to work their socks of andnot lose possession.

We also need everyone to defend, not just the back line, defend as a group and attack as a group, but we need our central defenders to be at their best and we need to try and not give free kicks and corners away.

Finally we need Lloris to be on top form and not make any errors which he has done in the past in big games.

I am waiting for this juicy game with great anticipation and love. COYS

Shame that LLorente has not had much playing time under Poch as I would've preferred Lorrente as the striker with Kane taking up Dele's position....leaving Son as an impact sub. The reason why I'd have preferred that option would be so that when defending, Llorente could stay by the half way, occupying two defenders. With Harry as lone striker, we defend as a team and any clearances would only bring another wave of attack. RM are nothing like the PL 'lower' oppositions we have faced so far (bar Chelsea). If we keep defending in numbers, I see it turning out to be a long night of trying to play out of our own half..... sideways and backwards ain't gonna help. Fingers crossed for a draw.

CS, In my predicted line-up, I have Dembele in Deles place. I think Harry should play as he usually does and that Llorente should again be saved as a different option from the bench. I think that either Son or Sissoko can (in very different ways) be the perfect outlet for the swift counter attack if and when it's needed. They both have good pace with the ball. Son being the more skilful and crafty of the two but Sissoko being much stronger and more direct.

I accept your alternatives HT. It will be great tactical challenge. What is it with injuries and illnesses with our players of late?. The tea lady needs to be sacked.

I think it will be a containment exercise using Dembele and Dier. i think Poch will start with Son so that we give it a go from the start. If we are evens at half time, then tighten up and frustrate them. Whatever happens, apart from a win, it will be keeping the GD low. BTW, I was also opting for Llorente for his CL experience. I worry that some of our 'kids' may be overwhelmed by the occasion.....the stage doesn't get any bigger!

Dembele is wasted in attacking midfield, for me. Every time he has played there, he has struggled. He doesn't score or assist nearly as much as a number 10 should. Bossing the central midfield areas is where he is best deployed, in my opinion.

I agree thought Winks should start if we are going there to gets win as imo he move the ball forward AND quicker. Dembele can come on 2nd half to tighten up things. My biggest uncertainty is whether Son should start. He hasn't recovered any of his form from last season and I don't want to see him play as a LWB. Shame that Trippier (lack of pace) is not suited to this game. Aurier needs to remain calm as they may target him for a booking or two.

Without Davies and with Rose not being ready to start, I think Poch may choose to play a back 4 as he did against Bournemouth.

With Son, I think this is just the game for him to come alive in.

CS you may well be right about Dembele being held in reserve, after being out.

It's a match whereby my imagination is already running away with all the possibilities. It's now almost set up by me to be a boring affair with both teams cancelling each other out. That can't possibly be so though, can it? It's bound to be a classic. Surely?

con't.

I think Poch prefers a back 3 and 2 wing backs, so this suggests that we have a shortage of defensive players. Dier should no longer be regarded as a CB unless its an absolute crisis he has to be a DM like Wanyama and has Wanyama has been out Dier has had to play that role and that makes him unavailable for Cb imo. So if we got 3 at back for most games we need at least 6 defenders who are up to scratch and can play that role, because otherwise players cannot get enough rest when games are thick and fast and injuries occur. So who are our back up for a 3 man system? Can Foyth play that system? who else is there? Davies can play it he has for Wales, but he is mainly used to playing LB for us and again he has to fill in for injured Rose. I think Rose, Davies, Arier and Trippier are the 4 FB who can play wing backs, they can be rotated and if there is long term injury to any of them then you have a 5 and 6th, these being KWP (youngster) and then emergency cover in another senior defender to play out of their usual position, as Verts did. It has to be the same for the 3 CB's, we need 3 who can play that role. I suggest Foyth may be able to play as a 3 but is he ready, and who else is there. We need 3 capable back ups and then we have the 7th and 8th cover, one being a youngster, I suggest at this time that is Foyth and then emergency cover in say Dier.

con'td.

As it is we don't actually have those 3 Cb cover, and for me that potentially is a problem if we get injuries to Verts or Toby at least and if we want to play with a back 3 with Sanchez because those 3 will only get a rest in CC and possbily FA cup and if we progress in them and meet a big team I expect Poch may want to play them in those if it means having a chance of silverware.

I think striker position is also a problem long term, Llorente is 32 and Janssen doesn't look anywhere near to cover kane and Son is too inconstent especially when he misses pre season. I want Llorente to get game time because without it I am concerned he will not gain his fitness and sharpness and then if we do get a injury to Kane he will be rusty. However, there is time for him to gain fitness and hopefully get game time in the cups, but we need a striker long term.

I think offensive we have options because with 3 at the back and 2 wing backs we play 2 in the middle and two behind Kane. Dele and Eriksen are those 2 at the moment, but we have Son and Lamela to come back that's the 2 back up's I am talkig about for every position, they are capable back up's, then you have a youngster, GK and then versitile player for emergencies, I see Sissoko that player. In midfield we are okish, we have 3 experienced good players for 2 places in Dier, Wanyama and Dembele and imo just 1 player short, then we have the younster to cover, this is Winks and the emergency versitile player could be Eriksen or Dele, both can drop back, so imo we are short of one expereince midfielder as a back up.

So as I see it we need 3 defenders who can play in a 3 man system, 1 midfielder and long term 1 striker. The I would say we have a complete squad with 22 capable players, we have 3 youngsters covering who are gaining first team experience in Winks, Foyth and GK, and we already have emergency cover in other senior players who can swap positions which I mentioned and of course we have even younger players who are unlikely to feature yet but training with first team. However, we need those experience players we are missing to cope with the demands of the Pl and all competitions and injuries. I would say at a push Winks is the nearest to becoming that 4th experienced player and lose the tag of young player as back up when first teamer and their back up are unavailable, but say like tonight. If Dembele isn't able to play, and Wanyama is out as well, that leaves one expoerienced player for midfielder Dier and if we had that extra experienced player we wouldn't need to rely on a youngster for such an important big match. It's not about blocking the youngsters prgress, its about being able to compete and let the youngsters play the other cup games and make sure we have enough experienced players to play these big matches. in a ideal world would we really want to play a inexperienced youngster against the best team in the world? For me Winks shouldn't have to be relied upon we should have four expereinced midfielders, then if you get unlucky with injuries you call upon your youngster or you use a senior player from another position you really don't want to be calling upon a youngster for such a big game, even though he may well do ok, but is ok enough when you want to compete and win things.

I think Barkely would give us that 4th midfielder, but then again may be I am missing the fact that sissoko is that 4th expereince midfielder! i am rambling now. I just think we are not a complete squad and defensively playing 3 at the back means most of our defenders are used up every game, so their is less opportunity to roate and rest and cater for injuries.

If Poch wants to play 3 at back he could go with KWP as LWB but please not Trippier. However, he could consider Vertongen as LWB and play both Sanchez and Foyth with Toby, very inexperience but you never know. He could also play Verts as LWB again and play Dier in a back 3 with Toby and Sanchez and play Dembele and Winks in the middle if Dembele is fit enough to start and he could then reverts to a back 4 later in the game if Dembele needs to come of in the 2nd half and move Dier into midfield.

I suppose it depends on whether we are going to get players behind the ball and contain and see how it pans out or whether we are going there to attack, if its the former, contain I expect a back four and three in the middle if its the latter, attack I expect a back 3 with wing back attacking.

I don't like the idea of Son or trippier playing LWB either its KWP or Verts. I don't think Son is in form and I really think its down to missing pre season, he just hasn't got going, so it depends again Poch approach. if we are going to attack from the start then Son should play, if we are going to contain first, then Son should be on the bench.

It's going to be interesting to see what Poch does but I really hope he doesn't over think and try to be clever, he has done that before in big games, this is imo one weakness he has. CC semi against Chelsea, Son at LWB trying to be clever. He has done something else bizarre in a big game before but cannot recall it now, so I hope he has learnt from those mistakes. For me its better to play a players in their natural position or familiar with it even if they haven't as much experience than play a player out of position because they are more experience player. Son more experience than KWP but KWP knows how to play as a defensive player. If Poch wants expereince over inexperience then it has to be Verts LWB or LB imo, not Trippier who has experienc but not out of position, Verts plays LB for his country. If however, he chooses to keep Verts in his position he usually plays for us then Lb or LWB has to be KWP.

See how it goes until the final 20 mins then perhaps bring on more experince back-ups. Not sure Rose will start, just returning from injury, same for Dembele. Pochettino stated that he wants to play our usual game and attempt to control the match and play our regular possession and attacking style. (Something like that) He may though have been throwing out a red herring for Zidane to pounce on. - If Real want to stifle our attacking game plan then they could always flood their defence and park the proverbial bus against us. - They should of course save that for Wembley. Everyone else does.

I am just so excited so I am using my little energy capacity to speak with my fellow Spurs fans, but unfortunately I cannot do it all the time. This is not a normal game, this is big so hence I am here for a while. I am not likely to recover it's been over six years housebound now and still cannot even sit upright for more than a few minutes, but hey ho we all have to go, but not yet. I lay here today and thought about life and I thought 'I love Tottenham' I was overwhelmed how much I love them lol Enjoy the match.

HT, yes, that's what I was hoping for. However, makes me wonder why Kane and Llorente never started together against the likes of Huddersfield and B'mth in order for them to build up some understanding. At least I'll have less to moan as my wish has come true! Seems we are gonna give it go....to dare is to do....and all that! COYS!

This is why I was not convinced that Aurier was a good signing. All of the VS posters who thought Aurier was easily as good, if not an upgrade on Walker, well apart from getting sent off and giving away penalties, I fail to see more categories in which Aurier is superior.

Stupid challenge by Aurier. Eriksen suffering from a little stage fright and Llorente a bit of a 5th wheel. Sons pace on the counter would probably be of more use. Other than that we've done really well.

Have we not seen this before from Aurier? What a stupid penalty especially as RM seem to be running out of ideas and getting frustrated. Just let them back in before half time

Auriers actually played well in general, but he needs to stop going to ground so much.
