Spurs Need to Debag the Baggies, Again.

Spurs Need to Debag the Baggies, Again.

There is no place for sentiment in the Premier League and for reasons that I won`t bore you with now, West Brom at home is one of those fixtures which always brings a smile to my face.

So sentiment aside, debagging them and giving them a proper spanking and making a bad situation worse for them, is a must.

I want a grin as wide as Sandwell Valley Country Park come Saturday night as I host a post-match dinner and entertain (torture) a couple of West Brom loving acquaintances; nothing less will do.

This match has to be the kick off to what must be for us a long unbeaten run, where sharpness and focus returns and we keep on track for a Top four finish.

For the Spurs players the great win against Dortmund should now be a pleasant memory, as should the whole of the Champions league; the incredible group task was set, we have measured up and come through with flying Lillywhite colours.

Last season this same home fixture ended up a magnificent 4-0 win, with one of our best performances of the season. Harry bagged three and should have had five or more, he and we, were rampant.

It was also the match where we equaled the clubs then record of six straight Premier League wins - and this time whilst they were the sixth in that run, we must make this game the start of an even better run if hopes of being in the final fight come the business end of the season are to be realised.

Former manager Pullis made them a tough team to beat at the Hawthorns but he never could quite make it happen for them away from home. They have been on an awful run, not winning since the second week of the season when they beat Burnley at Turf Moor. After that, their record has been a poor return of four points from a possible 30 with four draws and six defeats. Despite this miserable run, most of the Baggies fans are in jubilant mood believing that his brand of football has finally been banished from the Hawthorns after what for some seemed an eternity.

The new Chinese owners couldn`t have got off to a worse start and so Pullis has been sacked, is £2 mill richer for being unemployed, and looking for the next club he can 'save` from entertaining football.

The bad news is that teams that lose their managers always have this uncanny knack of trying to prove that it wasn`t their fault the manager was sacked and often un-expectantly play above their recent form, managing to confound all the pundits and critics.

It wouldn`t shock me to see them do just that; leave their recent form behind and look to their past record to inspire them for this one.

West Brom`s record against us is pretty decent and the new man will no doubt remind them of that before they cross the line.

I expect that their realistic ambition for this game will be a draw.

In our last 5 meetings: they`ve held us to a draw 3 times. Overall in the Premier League we have beaten them 9 times, had an unhealthy 10 draws and we have lost to them 3 times.

Given that their temporary man in charge, Pullis`s one time assistant and now caretaker manager Gary Megson, is from the same footballing tactical stable as Pullis, my view is that they will once again try and play with 10 or 11 men in their own half for much of the game, only making a cavalry charge over the half-way line to chase long balls over the top and coming forward in mass for what I expect to be rare set-pieces. Sanchez will have to try and keep himself awake and alert for the hail mary's being chucked up to whatever 'striker' they can call one for this game.

It will be up to us to once again unlock them, the longer the game goes on without us scoring will only make them fight harder.

Last season we came out racing from the off, looking to get an early goal, which Harry did in the 12th minute, do that, and we can all look forward to a re-run of last year`s comprehensive debagging.

The big question for us is who plays, who rests and what will we do differently, if anything?

With no more injured than we already had before our Champions league exertions it will simply be a question of who starts, who gets rested and what tactical changes will Poch spring?

The first the big question is will Poch go with Aurier and Tantrum Rose again or revert back to Tripper and Davies?

I expect the defence will line up like this; Lloris, Tripper, Dier on the right of a three again, Sanchez in the middle and Vert left, with Davies out wide; Tantrum Rose will be rested (from fuming) - clapping halfheartedly from the bench.

Midfield maybe a bit trickier, but given that West Brom are very aggressive in midfield, I expect Winks to start but be protected and flanked by Sissoko.

Starting Dembele would be a bit of a risk as he`s looked so out of sorts recently plus its clear to me that we are really having to manage his playing time now. Poch might be tempted to play him back into form, and build his confidence in his own physicality and touch again, and this could be a game that he could do just that.

Sissoko will do a job as a willing worker, I expect him to put in another game of hard-graft and be the midfield water carrier even if the guile, skill and touch may not quite be what any unbridled optimist still expects or fantasies he still has hidden within in him.

If Dembele plays instead, I would expect him to be concentrating on the more reserved anchor/holding screening role allowing Winks to be more positive going forward and being the midfield playmaker with his fine through balls and crisp passing.

I am reliably informed that both Tashan Oakley-Boothe and even Lamela are in consideration and likely to be on the bench., and it would not surprise me to see Poch pull a surprise with both of them, but the final decision will not be made until the last minute after Friday`s training session.

If Lamela does make it to the bench and we have a decent lead, I`d lay money on him making the last 10-15 minutes.

The front three might be in for a change, Eriksen has put in some hard miles in big games recently and if I were Poch I would be looking to encourage an on-song Song and give him a starting place alongside first name on the teamsheet, Harry, who maybe is not as sharp this time around as he was this game last season.

So whilst Erksen has missed very few games, this is one where I would really be thinking I can afford the risk and leave him on the bench, he looked below par after his International heroics in both the last two games and a short rest looks to me like it would do him a World of good.

With Harry hitting the target again against Dortmund after six games without scoring, this match will have his juices flowing again; in the expectation that his sharpness is improving after carrying a tear for a few games, if he gets another early goal, it would not surprise me to see him bag three.

Alli will have to work hard on his possession and moving the ball quicker, he`s had a habit lately of being slow with the latter and giving the ball away cheaply, playing him into top form after his assists would be a priority for me.

West Brom will once again target Alli, much like they did at their place last season when he was kicked, knocked and pressured for much of the game.

He barely held his temper then, he`ll need to do the same again here. I`d like to see him playing with a bit more freedom here and doing what he does best, creating and scoring.

My prediction for the game is another 4-0 win. Two from Harry, Two from Song.

p.s. we will be playing the predictor game for this one again, prize to be announced tomorrow. For those of you going to the game Saturday (I am forced to give this one a miss) I hope it is a great game - for those of you who cannnot, make sure you are making your thoughts known on this thread; we are close to deciding the short list for the posters of the month and what you type here on and after the game might be the decider ! :-)

We didn't actually do a lot wrong at Arsenal, I can't compute the criticism. I watched the game then read the match reports and listened to the pundits' opinions after, they were two completely different games. Honestly, we weren't half as bad as portrayed and Arsenal would never have won the game had the first goal not been given, they never looked like winning it and we still pinned them back in the 2nd half for long periods with a patched-up team. Hopefully we can get a good result on Saturday but make sure we respect the opposition.

face ... Every top six team that gets beaten by another top six team gets blasted in the media who seem to delight in predicting it is the end of the world for them. They take the definition of 'over reacting' to a whole new level. it's just one game however you look at it. I agree with you that we were not as bad as all the reports (and many comments on here) suggest.

Poch has put Rose in his place now... He has to pick Davies LB then sub on rose 75 mins. so keeping his authority and giving rose something as well. Dele needs to keep his cool and continue to release the ball a bit quicker, and thus take out 2 or 3 players he always has onto him, (as in Dortm. game) Lorente has to score a goal, and should start till 60 mins then Harry on field, which gives both a chance. Son to start.. Erikson bench. MF engine of Sisoko / winks. Dembele as sub if needed. Back line usual Dier Sanchez Verts. Vorm in goal to keep him sharp.

Given the choice, I'd consider Foyth for this game and put Dier in DM. Like Spursex, I too would like to see Eriksen rested (or on bench) thus allowing Dele to be the creative hub. If WBA come to park the bus, then more creativity is needed along with WB's that can stretch their defence. Trippier should start and can remind himself how he used to whip those crosses in....also (if no Eriksen), Tripp can take corners too. Please no more Palace type performances.....1-0 will do but let's do it the Spurs way.

Oh, and a nice article Oyveh..... I mean Spursex!

If we want a back-up striker for our bench, why aren’t our scouts looking at Sam Kerr, the Australian international? Wrong part of the globe, I suppose. Sam has scored something like 29 goals in the last 23 games for club and country, and although still only 23 is already an Aussie star! Sam can head a ball well, has a lethal shot, and can hold the ball up effortlessly. Sam’s last performance, a couple of days ago against China, resulted in two more gaols; a header under pressure and a screamer from outside the box! Sam has similar attributes and plays like Kane, so a position on our bench makes sense. Another bonus is that Sam’s style of football is far more attractive to watch than Kane’s. Sam’s elder brother, Daniel Kerr, is a West Coast Eagles legend (Aussie Rules football), so sporting prowess runs in the family. Danny Rose has probably ‘googled’ ‘Sam Kerr’ and knows all about this but has obviously failed to pass on the pertinent information to MP or the ‘Scouts’ department. Got to say I really enjoy watching Sam play.

Ourmatches at Wembley can be divided into two categories: games in which we gave the ball to our opponents, and games in which our opponents gave the ball to us. Traditionally this game will fall into the category of where we have the ball and give it away rather than we are given the ball by our opposition, our Champions League wins and 4-1 demolition of Liverpool are the one's where got the ball was given to us by the opposition and the result: 10 goals scored, three conceded and average possession of 35%. Home draws with Swansea and Burnley, and a frustrating home defeat against Chelsea are the latter: two goals scored, three conceded and an average possession of 67%. Dirty 1-0 wins over Bournemouth and Crystal Palace were also games in which we monopolised possession and just nicked the win! WBA will try and come at us but they will make sure they leave enough at the back to get back quickly. Son is not a player i want to see start anymore neither do i want to see Moussa start. Moussa has lost a yard which is why, when he loses the ball, he makes clumsy attempts to get the ball back which invariably ends in a foul and a free kick. Son is better in front of goal when he has to make a snap decision, give him too much time to think about how he is going to score and his judgement lets him down. This is supposed to be the game that takes us on a winning run so the team that Poch picks will have to be the one that can break down two banks of four and one that isn't going to be predictable ...the question is will Poch let the Baggies come on to us and let them have the ball, so we can exploit the spaces, because the stats show we are turning into a better machine on the counter attack than a high possession team!

With all due respect OyVeh Maria, but how can a team set-up to play counter-attacking football against a team that is parking the bus? How can Spurs decide to give up possession to a team that sits back but, at the same time, expect them to come on to Spurs. That would make for a strange and probably very dull game of football with neither team wanting the ball and/or attempting to actually play the (beautiful) game of football. - I don't think we play better because we are seemingly now playing better or more often on the counter in some matches. We are just now more varied in that we don't necessarily need a high possession game in order to win it. We have become more versatile as a team (with experience), which means that however the opposition sets up we will have our ways and means of countering them with a different or varied set of tactics and, not one way or the other. ..... If we are 2-0 up in the 1st 10 minutes then any pre-conceived set up to play against a parked bus changes anyhow, unless they somehow decide that they are happy to still sit back and lose. ....Or, If we strangely start with the idea of just letting them have most of the ball, then how should we go about that? Just give it to them?! Either way we do it and however we or they set up and play, a win is a win etc..... Still, I'll take 5-0 over 1-0 but 1-0 will do and regardless of the possession stats. I think. But, I am just a little confused.

We don't need to play 3 CBs tomorrow against West Brom, so I would consider resting Dier and bringing in Llorente to play two up top with Kane. I know he's had a shocking time of it, but at some point this season he's going to have to cover for Kane and he needs some game time. Given that West Brom are very likely to defend deep, it will provide some variety in attack. And it will give options to our wing backs, particularly if it's Davies and Tripper. They wouldn't have to get to the byline before making their crosses - they can send them in from much deeper. Llorente and Kane worked well together away to Madrid and it will create more space for him (Kane). In fact, it will create more space for Dele and Eriksen (and/or Son if he plays). I think it's worth a shot. And you have to ask, if Llorente doesn't play in a game like this, when will he play?

Poch said yesterday that we d that he doesn't want players with pace as they are ineffective against deep defensive teams. Rather he wants players like Lamela that can beat players one on one and create chances. I guess he didn't see Lamela playing much for us then. He said that better than players with pace is for the whole team to play at a higher tempo. Strange then that they don't seem to listen to him very often. Tempo will be key tomorrow against WBA and also selection with an eye on injuries, particularly if McClean is playing for them. Whichever team he selects should be good enough to win and win well but we are Tottenham after all and like to be hospitable to our visitors at Wembley. We are away to Leicester on Tuesday who have a some pacy players and this may suit a counter attacking approach by us in which case we will need Son fully fit to add some pace to the attack. In spite of what Poch says there is little point in balls over the top if we don't have the pace to capitalise so I would rest Son to the bench tomorrow along with Alli on form grounds as he will be kicked to death anyway against WBA, and Eriksen due to tiredness. Llorente should play as he will provide aerial cover for WBA's set plays and corners plus he needs game time, Sissoko in MF for his energy levels and entertainment value and either Dembele or one of our youth players to make up the numbers. Whoever plays its likely to be a dull, turgid affair settled by a penalty or set piece so I'll go for 1-0 to us, maybe.

I think its going to be a tight game as WBA will stay in front of us and try to nick a goal. Hopefully we can score early and make them come out. On paper it seems like an easy win and hopefully it is. I don't agree with Llorente playing, even as cover for Kane. He's slow and has a heavy touch. Can't see why we brought him at all. Its not like we put crosses in the box to take advantage of his height. I'd rather Son as a false no9. At least he has pace and can finish on the turn. I'm hoping for 4-0, but expecting 2 or 3 - 1.

Do we have the players to play at a high tempo? Not sure we do at times because for one Dele isn't that type of player, he losed the ball a lot and he slows the attack down when that happens. Eriksen is near that type of player but our midfield need to be on same wave length to make it work and is Kane the type of striker to play that way? Personally I think the problem with those sort of games, parking the bus is our inability to take on players and get past them and inability to drag players out with a lack of running behind. Son tries it, and can do it at times but the ball has got to be played in behind otherwise no point in him making the run. We tip tap it in front of the opposition defence far too much, make it easy for them, that is what I see as the problem. I also think Davies and Trippier hardly get past half way line, they don't have the ability to get past a tight defence, so they stop and pass it side ways, and so do the midfielders. We need a Gasgoine kind of player that says 'here I come and they run at the defenders and drag them out of their position and we need a creative midfielder who can move the ball behind the back line and a willing runner to go for it.

Tomorrow I would stick to back 3 for the first half just to see how they fair as its a new man in charge and they may well change their style with a new confidence that can sometimes come from a change of manager, but they could equally be fearful and not want to lose and decided to get everyone behind the ball. If they do the latter then we can change it at half time and bring on another offensive player.

Really we need to be bagging the 3 points and anything less would actuallly be damaging to our confidence and top 4 hopes, once you drop points in such games when your only just in the top 4 position you start to get fearful and it affects your game. To make sure that doesn't happen we need to win after the NLD loss and show that it hasn't affected us.

I would love to see lamela on the bench but there is absolutely no point on doing so if he feels he isn't ready because he will be tensed and that will potentially put him at risk of injury, he needs ot be relaxed and confident in himself and his body after such a long time out, mind affects body, body affects mind, so if he is on the bench it will mean he feels ready, otherwise lets wait and be patient.

I am curious as to how he will come back, whether he will regain his fitness and be at the level he was after time of course or whether we will see improvement, it's hard to know how good he can be because he has had so mnay injuries and settling in period that we haven't seen enough of him. he was getting better but was still not keeping the ball well or showing us what he can do before he got injured, but he was kimproving slowly, then this lay off, so what lamela will we get? when he does come back.

We (obviously) need a player like Hazard or DeBryune. Someone with pace who defences back-off when he runs at them. We have plenty of gifted technical players, but no one who can go past players from midfield and have end product. Dembele is a good dribbler, but his end product just isn't there. Those types of players are going to cost well over £100m though. I think we should definitely get Barkley and develop him, even though he'll probably cost about 50m. He's young and has that kind of quality, but his decision making is questionable. I think that under the right coach he could be one of the best MF's in the EPL. This is a very good Spurs side, probably the best I've seen, so we need to build on what we currently have. Players like Sissoko, "Llorente" and GK strike me as backward steps. It would clearly be better to sign one exceptional player for 80 or so million, than to spend that money on 3 awful players.

I agree with Fanman and It'sMe re that skillful player that can dribble past defenders with trickery and pace. Son is the nearest we have in that mould. Personally I think Poch was hoping N'Jie and now N'Koudou to be that type of player. Neither got/getting the minutes and when called upon, try too hard to make an impact. As for costing 100 mill... sorry, I don't buy that. I have seen many a PL game of lower positioned teams and several have such players, even Spammers have a couple, Damarai Gray of Leicester.... But I am not convinced Poch is necessarily looking at those type of players or unable to find any for some reason. He seems content in sticking to his tried and tested philosophy with players proven to fit that style. For some reason Sissoko is a rare recruit that has seen so much game time (except Sanchez). Foyth for next season, ditto Gazza the goalie, Llorente an 85th minute player, N'Koudou will be heading to the N'Jie-land. So, get our money back on N'Koudou and Jannsen and spend it wisely next time round.....oh, and there should be even a bigger transfer pot if (imo more likely) Rose moves on. Just hope we don't sign another 40 mill defender nor another Sissoko. The new stadium deserves a better cast to grace it.

critical_spur, agreed. It looks as though Rose is on his way out which is a shame. We should get another 50m for him though. I think a team as good as ours should be looking at top talent, I haven't watched a lot of lower league teams this season, so I couldn't give a shout to any potential signings. My ideal signing would be Isco, but that's just a pipe dream.

Several of the last few posters mirror Poch’s description of the type of player he needs. Hazard is not fast, he may be quick but his real skill isn’t his ability to take in players and get past them. He is exactly the type of player we need. Marcus Edwards is this type of player if he develops.

jvd - agree that is what Poch is talking about, it's a turn of pace as such but not necessarily pacy, but definately have the ability to take players on and create. I think Edwards is like that, but also may be Barkley, he drives at players, whether he has enough skill to do it in tight spaces I don't know, seems ages since I seen him play.

Regarding that player we need to break down defences, what I would like to see is for us to go for a top player rather than get 3 average players. The money we spent on Llorente, Sissoko and GK could have brought us one decent player, but it's not easy because that top player will demand top wages.

I still think if we sell Sissoko, GK, Llorente and Janssen that would bring us at least 60m and I would get that one player and bring in our own youngsters to fill the gaps. For me I think our youngsters could contribute as much as these players mentioned have, may be not as much expereince as these guys but they will have entusiasm, energy and a point to prove. We waste too much money on average players or players that don't fit in to our philosophy.

Interesting comment made in Poch book about Sissoko, 'he didn't cost too much and Levy thinks I will be able to improve him' after saying he had a indifferent time at newcastle, 'we will see' is about what Poch said, not eact words, but it came across to me he wasn't a Poch signing! May be we couldn't get Poch signings and Levy thought he was better than nothing and felt Poch could get the best out of him. Poch has got more out of him this season, but he is still way of the mark imo. Poch also saying GK isn't giving enough, another youngster to fall way side, why bother, may be bets to save our money towards a better top player and let our youngster see if the can 'give' more, Onamah, Edwards (attitude improves), same with striker, isn't it about time we sawe Sterling in the frame!

It'sMe, Personally, I think that Davies and Trippier most certainly do get forward a lot beyond the half-way line. Our wing-backs (whoever they are) get forward as much as they can, when not having to defend of course. It's how a wing-back operates.

Their starting point is basically the halfway line. It's also a frequent tactic for the team and them, when out wide and in advanced positions, to stop and play it inside to an attacking player who is then occupying the spaces inside and beyond defenders that have been dragged out wide to our wing-backs . (Ie., To Dele and Eriksen). And, especially if the way forward down the line is blocked off. If there is space beyond the wing-backs and behind the last defenders, then the return pass or through ball is on for them, and they are then in a position to cross or cut-back to the on-running Eriksen, Dele, Kane or whoever. I think we do this very well and with a lot of success, most of the time and with whichever combination of backs are picked to play.

However, against a packed defence it is not so much about the need for 'fast' players as such, but as Pochettino (I think) has pointed out, the need is more for the quickness of thought and touch and the swift movement of players into space and ball to feet etc. ... But, also, some patience is often needed in this build up of play.

If playing against a 'parked' bus can make us look a bit slow sometimes, it will usually be as much about how the opposition is playing, as it is about us. If the bus parkers are not particularly doing it well, and without the necessary discipline, a good consistent shape and a dogged attitude, then they will usually quickly tire and fall apart in the end or, if we can score early. (It can be just the same, even if they have been disciplined, dogged and are defending well). ..... We then, hopefully, go on to knick a goal or 5! ;-)

At least, that is how I see it.

Whether or not WBA choose to sit back today and try to hit us on the break or whatever, remains to be seen. If we can be one or two up before or by half-time, I think we will thrash 'em. However it pans out, I can't see us not getting the 3 points.

So, that's my needless ramble for the day. What's yours?

UP the SPURS!

Finally twitter has come alive. lamela not in the U23rs team or sub so either he has taken a step forward or back depending on whether he is named in the senior squad for todays game! If he is on the bench or even starts for us then that is a stpe forward, but if he isn't anywhere to be seen then imo that is a step back after playing 60mins last week.

Surely if there last week showing was positive then he would be either in the U23 to continue gaining fitness or be at least on the bench today with a view that he could contribute for at least 20mins! Another hour to wait and see.

Maybe he had a long-booked appointment for the hair salon or doggy salon, or both, and didn't want to let his or his pooches stylist down. ... Forget your pooch Coco, what about Poch!

This game will be the acid test of whether Poch's gamble in playing our knackered key players against the Germans has really come off. If he plays them again against the Baggies and the run of energy sapping games with no clear break in between catches up with them we could be out of the top four. The same might follow if he gives some of them a rest in this game. It will then be a question of whether the rest would have been better in the Dortmund game bearing in mind that we had only to beat Apoel at Wembley to be where we are today. Here's hoping I am wrong on this one.

Oh yes, TQ2Spurs. I can get away with it, if not MP. Haha! Here's the actual line-up: #THFC: Lloris (C), Trippier, Sanchez, Vertonghen, Davies, Dier, Winks, Son, Eriksen, Dele, Kane.

Stan........the way I see it is that we can now rest the whole 1st team against Apoel if we wish having guaranteed topping the group by winning in Germany.

A decent selection, if lacking a DM or physical presence in CM. Hoping the players don't tire out. Looks like Dele will play in deeper role.

Let's get this wrapped up in 1st half. Give Foyth, KWP and Llorente some time. Geof's prediction is about right for this one. COYS!

Hard to pridict formation, is it a back 3, wing backs and Eriksen or Dele playing deeper/ or is it back four with Dier and Winks in middle with a 3 and then Kane, or is it a 4 3 3 with Deir, Winks and Eriksen then Dele, Son and kane? or is Dele playing as a 3 in the middle and Eriksen firther up? I suppose it's a matter of wait and see.

No lamela, that is concerning a little, makes you wonder if his body or mind is anywhere near up to the task. I would have thought after last week either more minutes in u23 or on the bench for senior team, but then again, neither is Rose, may be that is how Poch works, when players come back after long injury and play the next week then do extra training! anyway, I guess we will have to wait another week to hear about Lamela and why Rose was once again not in squad! Decent line up and it would be nice if we can put this to bed early so we can make 3 subs to give the likes of Eriksen, Kane and Dier a rest, last half hour.

Looks like Poch is also making a point to Rose. “I select the team, not the players”! Not even on the bench. Wonder if he is fuming today.

HT, I think Dier will play CB. Winks strikes me as a CM not a DM? E1, I feel you on Rose over Davies, but Rose is returning to fitness. I think he'll feature today, no matter how the game goes.

WBA will no doubt try and get a point today by parking the bus, so we know how we need to set up and above all be patient. As highgate would say 1-0 will do, no good for the nerves though!
