Tottenham v APOEL Champions league Match Preview

We need a win, not for qualification, but simply to get a win under our belt and to lift the fog that is beginning to pervade so much of the good that has been done and achieved so far. Some might say winning this doesn't mean much; but winning is a great habit to have and a few of the players on show here, will have something to prove.

You will know as well as I how well we've played to be in the happy position of this game effectively being a waste of time; but our front line troops are all in need of both physical and mental rest.

Domestically we've had a rough time recently and Poch's team selections have alarmed and confused as much as it's inspired, tactically we now seem very one-dimensional, as Vert alluded to; we've been found out. We're in desperate need of a plan B and some plan B players that can make a difference. They have a chance to show up and impress Poch as I fully expect a liberal smattering of newer faces who may not normally start.

N'koudou and Sterling have genuine pace; play well here and they may well be part of a genuine, pacey Plan 'b' at some point in the season.

We are of course the Group H winners, but with probably as many 7-8 players rested for this game, it is a real guess how we will line up and even more of the same for how we will play.

But let's be clear APOEL shouldn't be in the competition; if they played in England they'd be lucky to be in Division 2, of course that doesn't mean that they are well organised and a pain in the posterior to break down. They haven't won any of their last 13 ties in this competition, and have only scored in 4 of them. As we saw in the first leg, they do know how to play on the break and managed to give a good couple of scares before we took control.

But they do have something to play for and being at Wembley will once again be a huge incentive for a visiting side, but win this and they'll likely finish third - a huge result for them, but they'll have to throw away the form book (even if we are playing poorly) to win this as they have never won away from home.

We finally wore them down at their place and won, some would say flatteringly 3-0, and with a scratch team likely to be picked by Poch, the margin of winning this time is unlikely to be greater.

It seems Delli will play, and speaking at the press conference had this to say about his form to Football.London '

'We`re disappointed with the results in recent games. All clubs have a dip in form. We`ll bounce back and show our character. It`s very easy. [to keep focus] No easy game in the Champions League. We want to be in this competition and taking on the best in Europe. We want to win every game '.

he went on

'It`s not unusual for a team to have a dip in form. We have a great team, great manager and staff and we`ll bounce back.

There`s always positives and negatives. I`d always like to be at my best in every match and training session. I`ve learned a lot from this season. I`m my own biggest critic. I know if it`s not going well for me. I work hard every session. It`s important that we keep pushing to always be better'

We won't be seeing Marcus Edwards as he's still not ready - which makes you wonder if we ever will now if not in a game like this - Nkoudou is going to start and there will be many hoping that he can put in a real performance and create a pressure wave that will see him as a real alternative for the Premier League, Sterling and Amos look like starting too, beyond that I suspect it will be a blend that will have all worked hard on the training pitch to make our shape and application look right.

This is a massive game for N'koudou, that is if we have any hope of him playing any part this season and Poch proving that he isn't another doomed to be sent back to France or loaned out in January.

We could start like this, but to be honest, your guess may well be better than mine:

Gazzaniga, Aurier, Foyth, Vert, Walker Peters, Winks, Amos, Sissoko, N'Koudou, Sterling, Llorente

Just winning and at Wembley are good enough reasons to put in a good performance... Fairly sure both Foyth and KWP will get a game, may be Gazza too though I think Vorm is due an appearance.

I personally don't care what the result is, as long as we rotate heavily. I will lose it if Eriksen and Kane get anywhere near the pitch. Of course, MP will play his best 11.

interesting press conference. Poch was clear GK had improved in recent weeks and shown he now understands what he needs to do to make it in the first team and he clearly said he is a good guy, right attitude. From that I deduce it was a matter of GK not reallu undertstanding what levels he has to work at on the training pitch and off it to be considered ready - if he has took it on board and worked his way into Poch plans them good on him and lets hope he takes his chance, because we need more players who can push our starting 11.

Regarding Edwards, well it seems Poch still considers him not ready 'it's about performance' and he wasn't going to talk about his behaviour. There still seems to be some reservations in Poch mind! but on the other hand it could be the 'whip' Poch is applying to get him to realise his potential 'tough love' so to speak. With Sterling and Amos in the squad this clearly sends a message out to edwards you need to push more, I guess with the others as well, but it also sends a 'carrot' out showing the youngsters opportunites will arise. For these two youngsters playing at wenbley if they get game time in CL is massive and it'w the dangling carrot that hopefully pushes them on.

It will be good to see Llorente play, try and get some fitness and see if the players can play to his strengths, build his confidence, but another shocker could knock him further back. Poch seems confident he will contribute and is happy with him so we have to trust Poch even if what we have seen of lorente hasn't impressed many us much!.

I think Dier needs a rest and I hope he gets it, and I expect Foyth to be given a chance. He is here and we need back up in the Pl with Sanchez and Toby out so may be Foyth can do enough to warrant selection in the PL next 3 games at least! Big game for him if he gets the nod.

I am looking forward to this game and some new faces. Rest eriksen as well and may be we will see Winks, I expect so. I expect Rose and Aurier to start, Aurier isn't doing as much as I thought and wonder whether its just lack of fitness, or whether its adapting to the new environment, and Rose need game time.

Shame Lamela cannot play as he isn't registered, but expect new GK to start if Vorm is still unfit.

A win would help with confidence and some good performances will help with competition for places. I expect a win tomorrow but cannot predict anything until I see the team sheet.

Not sure KWP will get a game because I suspect Aurier needs game time and so does Rose for fitness, so KWP may miss out again. I also don't see why Sanchez can't play, he ought to as he will miss the next 3 PL games so he gets his rest then, besides it's better to play as soon as you can after making a mistake of getting a red card, you just want to out it behind you so he should play with Foyth and I expect Verts if we play a 3 at back.

Will Sterling start may be but may be not, may be we will have Amos and Winks in the middle and see GK, Son and Dele behind Llorente! Or will Dembele start in the middle to improve his fitness with Winks and Amos come on later just as Sterling may come on later for Son. We don't want to play too mnay new faces and youngsters and have a bad start, but we do need to rest players and it looks like Kane, Eriksen and Dier, lloris are being rested. Hopefully whoever plays we put in a good performance I will go for Vorm, Aurier, Foyth, Sanchez, Verts and Rose, Winks, Amos, GK, Son and Dele and Llorente. I then expect two things to happen. if we are doing alright winning, then Son will be replaced by Sterling in 2nd half and if we need to tighten up in midfield then I expect demeble to come in for Amos in the 2nd half and at some point depending on how the game is going we may switch to a back 4 and take Verts off to give him a bit of a rest, or we may stick with back 3 and we may give KWP a run out in 2nd half for Rose or Aurier for last 20mins. I am concerned about Verts, he hasn't had a rest, but he seems fit even though he is one of the oldest so may be he will be fine but we cannot afford to lose him over the coming weeks so n ot resting him is a little worrying. We may actually rest him and play Davies as a 3 at the back or we may play a back 4 with Samchez and Foyth although that may be a bit risky, although it could be countered by playing 3 infront of them in midfield. Can't call it but we need to be careful with verts our best defender available for the busy period. I guess playing twice a week means Sanchez 3 games will go in about a week, Stoke, Brighten and unfortunately City. Boy are we running thin at the back.

This game is a good chance for Poch to try a plan B... shape of 433 will give experience to young players and show senior squad watching from the bench / stands what can be done. Remember Chelsea played 3 at the back, poch followed, and it worked... M City play 433 and are top of league.. poch has to try this....As i am going to the 3rd CL game ticket package, a 3-0 win and Lorente scoring his 1st goal for Spurs will do nicely... my game views will be posted on here...COYS

A good result is definitely required; worst spell of Poch's reign methinks..... I'd go for Foyth and Sanchez due to injury and suspension concerns..... Hopefully, N'Koudou can grab the game by the scruff and be a good threat.... Aurier and Rose at full/wing back need to have good games to get match sharpness.... Pity about Lamela not being in CL squad, but thankfully it's a 'free' game to play..... The team needs to put in a performance and let's hope we don't go down to an early goal, which seems to be our kryptonite..... Up the Spurs!

What can I say for a match that we don't actually need to win? It's a rare luxury..... I still expect us to play with the complete and utter attitude of winners. But, If there are wholesale changes from Pochettino (which seems likely), then it may not be as clear cut as we would like it or maybe expect it to be. On the other hand, the pressure to perform well should be a lot less on the players than is usual. And, whoever starts the match, I'm more concerned about them putting in a good performance than I am about the final result. I expect them to win but I don't think it will have as much bearing on our PL form as some have alluded to. Especially if most of our first team regulars are not playing.

Anyhow, here's another throwaway and probably completely wrong and rubbish score prediction:

It's a dead rubber of a game. Don't know where Apoel are in their league and what their priorities might be. They could potentially try and make an occasion of this, pitting their wits v a team that has seen off RM. They are not that shabby as they did give both RM and BM a good game. I'd like a win against these 'minnows' and may be, just may be, discover a gem amongst our peripheral/academy players. We are overdue for find a new Harry of the either mould. 3-1 Spurs. COYS!

Apoel are currently 3rd in the Cypriot 1st division, 6 points from top but with 2 games in hand........ They were thrashed at home 6-0 by Real but recently beat Olympiakos Nicosia 6-1 at home. So, I've changed my mind and now my prediction is to be: 6-0! With 16 year old Maurizio Pochettino, (Mauricio's THFC academy playing son), scoring all 6. Maybe not the 'new' Harry CS, but the new Poch!..... Watch out N'Koudou, MP's son is a winger!

LOL! We'll get a couple of pens tonight! Llorente will miss his and Sterling will score his. ... Actually, I'm hoping to see both of them feature tonight. It could and perhaps will be a good opportunity for both players to make their marks at Wembley and get on the score-sheet. - Do they know what bus-parking means in Cyprus? Is that how Apoel fared well against Dortmund? I do hope they don't get too all-defensive on us. It could prove embarrassing, given our recent form against the football replacement services of the PL.

Edwards missed a penalty the other week as well. At least he still has the confidence to take them but he may lose that privilage if the game is tight if he keeps missing them.

Well it looks like a back four and Sanchez and Foyth are new partnership with Foyth being inexperienced and Sanchez taking the lead it seems, so relatively a gamble.

I'm on track with my scofre prediction and goal scorer's don't let me down lads.

I think first half we played alright although they have allowed us to. I like Foyth, did in his last match and hoping he develops into a top player. Too early of course to know but there is something about him that stands out and it's confidence, which is obvious by his positioning on the picth, he pushed right up and Poch likes that. yes he will make mistakes and yes he hasn't been really tested but there is something baout him that I like :-).

Affraid GK hasn't done enough, loses the ball too much, knocked of the ball and generally isn't really happening with him, and that last contribution when he lost ball Poch wasn't impressed. I am affriad unless he improves quick his Tottenham career isn't either going to last or it is going to be slow.

I thought Foyth played well enough for his age and the fact he has only just arrived and hasn't played much. Yes he makes mistakes but can't really say he didn't do alright. Sanchez did alright but made a few mistakes tonight but again 21 new to the club and playing without a experienced CB to guide him. Aruier is nothing like the standard we let go in Walker and isn't really improving! He started ok and then his usual mishaps crept in and was lucky not to be sent off. Really hope its lack of fitness and adjusting to the team because unless he improves we are not going to replace WAlker with his performances. Still early days but unfortunately not impressed with him to date.

Rose is playing like he wants to show how good he is and its not working, he is trying too hard I think. His crosses were not great and he didn't really play well tonight, think he needs to settle down and relax a bit and stop trying to 'force' his fitness and peformances, just be more natural.

Winks had a decent first half but faded in the second, he has lost his mojo a bit, think it's lack of game time and still not quite found his fitness levels yet.

Son took his goal brilliantly, and played ok, Dele for me is still not anywhere near the same as last season but he knows he has hit a patchy period. It's going to take time to work through it.

Llorente, well he was ok, still isn't playing that well imo. he took his goal well but he also fluffed a few things and he just doesn't seem to be able to put together a decent game for 91mins. Not sure there was anything to shout about regarding his performance tonight but then at least he scored.

GK, well what can we say about him. Personally I thought he was poor. I really wanted to see him take his chance but he kept losing the ball, got knocked of the ball and when he made runs lost it or pushed it too far forward and didn't do much at all other than score a deflected goa;. he is nowhere near ready for first team games and I can see now why Poch hasn't played him. Not sure what will happen with him long term.

Sissoko was Sissoko, ran a lot, used his strength but never quite showed that piece of magic or contribution that hurt the oppositon, just can't see him improving either, he just doesn't fit.

Can't rate Vorm as he didn't do anything.

Overall I think it was good to win and take a look at the likes of GK, lorente and Foyth and out of the three Foyth gets my vote. Other than that it was a game to try and improve fitness of players such as Rose and Llorente, and to rest our main players which we have, but from that performance I would say we still haven't got strength and depth to call upon.

My only concern is seeing that GK hasn't done himself any good and doesn't seem to have improved or taken his chance. Llorente was ok but he is hardly the future and still isn't really playing that well. Aurier hasn't replaced Walker not n a million years, as yet. Happy with Foyth but overall our squad is weak imo after the first say 14-15 players and that is when everyone is fit.

I cannot believe we have brought yet another winger who hasn't been able to contribute, it's getting to be like the striker situation, surely there is a pacey winger somewhere that can do better than GK and Njie, we really need to look at our recruitment.

Anyway, job done without having to bring our best players on but we have so many injuries and now sanchez out it's not going to be a easy xmas period, well I don't think it is.

Lets hope we can stay in the mix of a top 4 by the end of january and see how things are then.

unusually for me, I am amazed at the negative reactions on here. Priority for this game was to give players game time and to assess fringe players. In the event we only got to see Foyth and GKN, both of whom for me did ok. Foyth made a few errors but then he was playing with Sanchez who also made errors, neither of them benefitting from guidance of Jan. I see GKN labelled as a Sunday League player and would like to know which League that is as it must be full of first class prospects. He has amazing acceleration from a standing start, made several good runs and a couple of good crosses and importantly has fast feet like Son. Just the sort of player who can make an impact against bus parkers. He needs more game time to develop his all round game. More worrying were the psycho cull backs aided and abetted by the karate kid at CB who seemingly learned nothing from his red card. Alli was dreadful, giving the ball away constantly and adding nothing to the overall play. Llorente and Son seem to be developing an understanding and were effective in the first half. Dembele was poor again. OK, so the opposition were poor, but this was a makeshift Spurs team that acquitted itself well

If Super Jan is a weak link then the rest of the chain must be made of Kryptonite.

When we lose or draw miserably against a team that we are expected to beat and our team has played poorly with an individual or more not putting the effort in or having made constant 'schoolboy errors'. Or, if Spurs had been humiliated against a team like Apoel or even a team such as Real... Then I can understand criticism, frustration and even anger. If Spurs were hovering around the foot of the PL and doing no better than Palace. If Pochettino had not improved one single player and if Harry Kane and all were strolling around like uninterested, unskilled, lazy so and so's... Then I would at least begin to understand the insults and non constructive criticism that one or two constantly post on here...

But surely, when our team (OUR TEAM), the club we support has just qualified to enter the last 16 of the CL as stand out winners of a very tough group, including Real Madrid, no less, then why oh why should any of us feel the need to be on a downer, let alone be slagging off our manager and players?

I'm sorry guys, but I find it very odd indeed.

Good post HT. However, I would be interested in your thoughts on which player of the fringe/academy you think maximised on the opportunity presented last night. IMO, Sissoko failed to improve, N'Koudou I have hope for - being the tricky type of players that I had been screaming out for - but still raw, glad Llorente took his goal well and I have no issue with his 2nd miss which was difficult to latch on to, Foyth will come good over time. KWP didn't do that much, lacking opps, others I am afraid nothing much to write about. Alli should have been the standout player but wasn't imo. So, effectively, we still only have 14 or 15 players to call upon. This is not intended to be a negative appraisal, more an objective one.

CS, I'm not one for reading too much into any one players performance on the strength of one easy-going match. Especially a match that had no bearing on our CL progress and in which most of our first team were rested. Also, Apoel didn't exactly make it tough and so I can fully understand why we didn't over exert ourselves. I just sat back, with a drink and enjoyed watching Spurs sail through without any pressure or undue angst.

HT, You've hit upon the very point I was hoping to make. An 'easy-going match' ....is exactly what it was and it's is in that environment I expect some of the fringe players to be able to express themselves, before they are thrown in to the deep end. Yes, I too was very relaxed about the game and seems with so many empty seats, most fans were supping ale on their sofas. On that note, I don't understand why they had to open the upper tiers. Could easily have filled the lower half to give it some atmosphere....at a lower cost.

Actually... Many supporters would have had combined CL tickets for all 3 Wembley matches and the club would not have known in advance of the thousands that didn't bother going.

Decent result but so what, as I said in my post at the opening of this thread, if we hadn't beaten these then it really would have been a serious crisis. Before we kid ourselves that everything in the garden is lovely again, let's see a prolonged points gaining run in the PL, to regain a creditable league position. Also it would be nice to have a FA Cup run, starting with a convincing win v AFC Wimbledon, perhaps we could actually try and win a pot for a change. Looking forward to the last 16 CL draw.

We all have our points of view. I try to be realistic not pessimistic. Our squad is not strong enough in comparison with the top six. Only Son coming off the bench offers any attacking force. Llorente, 1 goal in seven hours is ghastly. N'Koudou is really too predictable and is not an Aaron Lennon (when he was at his best. We can do so much better than these two. We need impact players off the bench not bench warmers. Sterling can be no worse than Llorente, surely. Aurier is a liability and a very poor replacement for Walker who we sorely miss and it looks like Rose is off in Jan. Our fringe players had a chance to excel last night. Only Son showed his true worth. Realistically, our squad is weak and very weak without Toby and Wanyama and Dele just mooching around getting frustrated. Poch's substitutions are often puzzling...bringing on Sterling for 5 mins was ridiculous and not even a time wasting ploy. He could have played at least 30 mins. The game was won at half time against a very average side who were made to look reasonable at times. Stoke game will show what we can do. Another easy 3 points.

Looks like some posters here have brought their prejudices against certain players to this game, particularly re N'koudou and Llorente who I think had quite a decent game. Critical 's assessment of both was spot on in my opinion. What the game proved to me was that Winks is no sub for Eriksen as a playmaker, that Llorente might be able to step in for Kane when needed, that once he gains some confidence N'koudou could become an effective impact sub and that Dele should now be dropped for a number of games to sort out his incredible loss of form. If he couldn't perform in this kind of game there's no point in persisting with him for the time being. A fit Lamela could have the same role in the team which leaves us with an urgent need for another playmaker in the January window.

Stan... " quite a decent game" against weak opposition is NOT good enough. Both players should have been flying with a great chance to improve confidence. Neither are ever going to frighten the opposition. They both looked very average to me. You are right about Dele..he has definitely lost his touch and is becoming more and more frustrated and irritable. We are short of several decent players on the bench so that we can change games when the opposition have sussed our starting lineup. At the moment, Lamela could be the answer. But we still need a scoring winger who can beat a man and cross the ball and a decent No. 9. Not a Llorente (1 goal in 7 hours), or a Soldado or a Janssen. But someone who scores and puts pressure on defences. Only Kane does that at the moment .

Some good diverse differenting opinions. I saw what Harry Karri saw with Llorente and Son, similar to Son and Janssen. Son seems to be the one player that does 'get' Llorente and janssen game. They hold the ball up and Son runs onto their lay off, Son did that with janssen. However, I am styruggling to see how Llorente is going to be any better than Janssen for two reasons, and I am not saying he isn't a better player than janssen, he has credentials, but the problem for me is that we don't okay to his strengths enough, quality balls into the area and secondly, he want play enough to be fit and sharp and with his age he needs to play to keep that sharpness.

Some are saying including myself Gk was poor and some say he was alright. I think for me the problem with GK is when he has got his chances he hasn't really done enough, and he does't seem to be able to keep the ball and while ha has pace and trickery is that enough? It's the same argument I have with Sissoko, he is agressive, runs and works hard and can tackel and win the ball but it's not enough. GK is young but he isn't that young and he has had over a season to adjust. I have mixed feelings about him, but I stick by his peformance last night and say he was poor and didn't take his chance. On the other hand if we believe what Poch says that he has worked hard and improved and is a really good kid then may be with this he will improve and come good, but how long do we wait, and can we afford to have 'potentials', we have lots of them in our academy. May be it will better now to loan him out to a club who will take a chance on him and play him because without game time I can't see him progressing much. I trust in Poch, so if he says he has a furture there must be something about him that I haven't seen that Poch feels he can work with, but the problem is we need players on the bench that can make an impact NOW.

I think Winks gane has dropped as well and not sure if its due to injury or learning curve. He showed last night his ability to pass and he is doing alright to fill in but not sure he is at te level to start regular we need more from him, but not concerned about him he is doing alright.

Dele is a difficult one because he is out of form, but sometimes you have to let the players play through it, as its not always good idea to drop players when they hit a bad patch, look at Kane never scores in August and he has to work through it. Plus he is young, however, can we afford to keep playing him if he isn't coming through that patch, is a couple of games on the bench the solution? hard to call, but with injuries we haven't really had many options.

If Lamela gets back to his best that will be a great additon and competition and the likes of Dele and Eriksen will need to up their game with Lamela in the wings but overall last night showed me we still haven't got a string enough squad and that our recruitment has failed again I do think we need a better balance in the squad if we are playing 3 at the back and need some help in January and I am not convinced as yet to Aurier and we need to seriously make sure we don't make the same nistake with Rose.

I thought Lorente and son did a good job. They have some understanding going on, hence 2 goals from them. Aurier cross was good. GKN did ok, reminded us of Lennon a bit..Fast and tricky. Aurier missed a few passes over the top to son making the run. All in all I could see they were not used to laying regularly as a team. Dele has to be dropped, Lamela in. Rose needs to be playing a bit more, get back to match sharpness. So a 3-0 win in champions league is still a good win. Onto to sat. and Stoke, and a return to Wembley.. can't wait until we are back at WHL. COYS
