Burnley. The Match Preview.

Burnley. The Match Preview.

Burnley started this season with an impressive 3-2 away win at the chavs. We really should have taken note, Sean Dyche had almost perfected his rope-a-dope tactics.

Surprisingly in their next game they dominated, tried to play football rather than peek-a-boo and got out doped themselves by West Brom. They have not tried to play anything remotely looking like attractive football ever since. My heart and admiration goes out to their supporters who actually pay to watch them week in week out; no wonder the North of England has a reputation as a cultural wasteland, perhaps they should instead spend their hard-earned on a trip to the ballet? Less dives, more emotional intensity and skills that make your legs quiver. If I had a cloth cap, I'd throw it in the air.

Then they played us at Wembley, a few siren voices were raised and warned that they wouldn't be push-overs and most expected that they'd use a combination of the Alamo defence plan and a tactical rope-a-dope part II.

We battered them, took a skinny 1-0 lead and they then did what we had all feared in the 93rd minute - pinched an equalising goal. We'd been well and truly had. It was a portent of things to come when Wembley is on the cards. Teams we should beat find a new level of performance and managers have worked out that for all our sideways, backwards passing and retention it can be nullified if they pile up the bodies and are prepared to do a Kamikazee impression when we shoot, of course they also know that only around 20% of our shots these days are on target, so the outcome for them really isn't that bad. They also know that this season in front of goal if Harry isn't 100% we have the lethal bite of my Kissing gourami's and the sting of a sea sponge; Irritating, itchy but really nothing worth getting worked up over.

The bad news for Burnley is that they will have to cope with our Kissing gourami attacks without their impressive Centre back James Tarkowski who has just been hauled up before the beak for violent conduct - and rightly so, he has more sharp elbows than a spider, but at least he held up his eight arms when put on the spot and did not (could not) attempt to challenge the FA's totally warranted charge.
Sean Dyche has built another impressive defensive unit around Tarkowski and it has been noticed; the 25 year is now on the radar on a small list of top clubs as a possible summer target, including ours (yes we are stepping up our search for defensive alternatives to both Vert and Toby).

His absence will be felt and I fully expect us to profit from it. Burnley will set out to frustrate. They will be exceptionally well drilled and disciplined in their defensive shape, but they will make more foray's across the half-way line this time as the pressure of trying to show their home fans that they can play a passing game which remotely resembles football worth paying to watch is heaped upon them.
So I do expect we will have a bit more space between the lines and with Sanchez back I think recent defensive frailties will almost disappear, I say almost because if Trippier plays, they will look once again to exploit his weakness in recovery and poor ball control.

Although I am now convinced that we will not see the best of Aurier until next season, I am hoping that he will get the nod and continue to show the small incremental improvement in him that is beginning to get noticed.

Chris Woods is the man that stole 2pts off of us at Wembley and I do expect him to be a handful at set-pieces again, he is a kiwi but is almost a throw-back to the old-fashioned static English target man of yesteryear, who on occasion can even run a bit with the ball at his feet, although from what I have seen, Dyche does not encourage it in case they start realising that they can play football that southerners might recognise.

I don't expect a formation change for this one, and think we will set up again in our favoured 3-4-3 with Lloris in goal, Disappointing Dier, Super Sanchez, Victorious Vert, then I hope Ambling Aurier, Rambling Rose, So-so Sissoko, Wonderful Winks, Stupendous Son, Excellent Eriksen and one of our own, Harry. There might be a slim chance of Eriksen being rested and starting with Lamela, but I am told that this all depends on how he does into today's pre-match session.

As to the outcome, I do expect a win, it will not be a walk in the park, they are too well organised for that but I will leave my exact prediction to the Xmas Prediction Competition - as I want to win it.

Hopefully, Poch will not be tempted to play Alli and will put the proverbial arm around his shoulder and make him wear a blanket for the day, the lad could do with a couple of games under the blanket, but preferably on his own and not with his gorgeous girlfriend, whose fame is rapidly becoming greater than Alli's.

I cannot for the life of me imagine why, unless it is because her daily dose of selfies on instagram have left less and less to the imagination - as her followers have soared, can Alli's loose of form be blamed on this distraction?

We need to win this, they are above us and we need to back in the scrap for 4th, anything other than a win and I will be forced to drown my sorrows in a bottle of top class Armagnac, mind you, I will probably do the same if we win…

I’d take Northerner’s flat caps over the bunch of Southern Softies masquerading as THFC. Whatever brand of football they play play Burnley are above us in the table. Could it be that their manager knows how to optimise his resources while ours just sails along with square pegs in round holes in terms of having the resources to play the way he wants to play if he even knows himself. Rumours of strong words in the dressing room after the City game and at Monday training. Who knows but there better be a more dynamic, integrated performance tomorrow. Maybe they should all wear gloves and flat caps.

Spursex... the article is better than the jokes.. HoHoHo. Tomorrow, Aurier must start, my team with DIer Sanchez Jan. Davies / Rose on left. I would not be surprised if Poch played Foyth and Dier into RDMF. Which will give Dembele a rest (on bench) and support to Winks, and cover to Aurier when forward, as we must cover the right side as city took full advantage. Agree Dele needs to be rested to the bench, Lamela to start. Forward 3 Harry Ericsen Sonny. COYS

Those jokes were awful. Lol. I hate when Dier plays in midfield he is so boring and just passes the ball back 85% of the time. I'd go with a back four, that means dier will play mid (unfortunately) with Dem which isn't to bad and still good enough to win what will be a tough game. Coys

It's really good news that Wanyama is close to return. We've desperately missed a defensive CM this season. The teams with the best defensive records in the league this season all have specialist, quality CMs. You only have to look at how Chelsea suffered when Kante was injured earlier. In Poch's first season we had Mason and Bentaleb in midfield and leaked goals. The following season we developed Dier in that role, in addition to recruiting Toby of course, and ended up with the best defensive record in the league. Last season we had Wanyama who was an improvement on Dier. Recently we have conceded the first goal, before half time, in almost every match, and ended up chasing the game. We need to get back to the basics of the last two seasons and build from the back. Don't concede and take your opportunities when they arise. Dier may pass sideways and backwards most of the time but his main role (until Wanyama is fit) is to provide protection for our defence. Then let our attacking players do their job.

Good post gary. I also think Dembele's loss of form gets overlooked when trying to disect our problems. When we have been at our best under Poch is when Moussa has been in their firing on all cylinders.

Last night's draw between Arsenal and Liverpool was the best result for us. A win today and we're back in fifth place only a point behind Liverpool. We then have a run of five favourable matches (Southampton H, Swansea A, West Ham H, Everton H and Southampton A) before playing Man U. If we do well in those games we should be back in the top 4 and hopefully gain some momentum for 2018.

Burnley have had a good run of fairly comfortable fixtures over the past couple of months having only faced the Gooners and a resurgent Leicester aside from mostly lower table teams and they lost both of those. I have a feeling we might see a very comfortable away win, if they don't park the home bus, which could start a poor run of results for Burnley as they come up against more top end teams over the coming weeks. I'm going for an optimistic 3-1 win for us.

So, if Burnley can beat Chelsea at Stamford Bridge but Spurs can at least get a home draw with them, whilst sadly losing at Wembley to Chelsea but also win 3-0 away to the Toffees and yet Chelsea can only manage a 0-0 draw at Everton and yet Tottenham lose embarressingly to Man City who only drew with Everton and..... Tell me, what does all that say for the modern game of football, crazy transfer fees, the EPL and the poor, poor form of Dele Alli?

This may be a knee jerk reaction, but I think we need a new manager. Sissoko, Davies and Dele start. Lamela, Moussa and Rose on the bench. With Sissoko playing, we're effectively a man down. He's not a CM, he's not even decent anywhere on the pitch. Poch's selection is going to make this game an uphill struggle...

I know we are winning, but we look awful. Our positioning is way off where we have been the last 2 seasons, we seemed to know where our players were last season, so many wasted passes, we look so nervous. Sissoko, once again I do not understand how you get into the team? What a shocking double miss. We clearly do not know how to play together, even Harry feels like he needs to shoot and not pass when the pass is on. This team really worries me, I do not think we are good enough for top 4 especially if we continue like this. I cannot wait till Victor and Toby are back, we need some leadership.

Can't agree with posts on here. team selection is about using the squad over this busy period. I am no fan of Sissoko but Dembele cannot play two games in a row, Winks injured, who else is there for CM. I also think he is doing alright, although woeful in front of goal, but he is working hard and doing a job in the centre, pity we are in this position of having to rely on a average player though, but fair do's he is doing a job today.

Aurier gave ball away again, but he is doing alright. Dele is playing better but needs to be careful after that yellow. I think ref got it right, it wasn't a red, but risky from Dele.

Overall we are doing alright, but haven't killed the game again. I would like to see Lamela on for at least half an hour, and think we need to really be aggressive in second half and get that 2nd goal asap because Burnley afre capable of nicking one back.

Sanchez again showing his class, so young and first season, what a player he is going to be.

Need a bit more from them to secure this and if we win we are knocking on top four door again. I don't see Arsenal or Liverppol being any better than us, both inconsitent but I think Chelsea may just about get top four due to experience, so for me it's between us, Liverpool and Arsenal, and if we can be top four after the festive season I think we will do everything to hold on to it, as we will have players back soon.

We can put this to bed if we go up a notch and if we don't it will be nail biting end.

Thought Sissoko had a good game but how many mo0re times can we keep allowing him to miss chances?. Luckily it never cost us today, but we could have made it 2-0 a lot earlier. Very pleased overall, Turf Moore has been a very tough ground to visit this season.

I think what we are seeing from Sissoko is his usefulness in filling in at busy times, or when there are injuries, suspensions, a squad player that can run a lot and put a shift in. However, don't expect goals, or many assists but he will do a job now, and I suppose poch has got him playing and contributing. He isn't really a fist team player, starter and probably never will be unless we are short on numbers although in some games he may be better option that Winks at the moment simply due to his running and physical presence. I am not convinced of him as a long term solution but I give credit, he played reasonably well today and worked hard and did a good job.

Thought we were better with Sanchez back and Kane was Kane, top form and played really well. Dele improved, and Eriksen and Son were ok but nothing outstanding.

If we can now play boxing day and win then we are knocking on the top four door again. Well done lads, professional, hardworking performance, much better than last week and thought overall we played well.

utd now handed title to City and hate to say it Walker - he is laughing all the way to the bank and I expect he has a trophy cabinet being built in his home now. I was willing Utd to win to make a go of it in the second half of the season, but it's unlikely imo. It's all about relegation and top four now. Such a shame the title is probably won defore xmas - money cannot buy you love or happiness but it can buy you trophies and make life easier.

Really hope we build on our win and really hope Kane beats Shearers record, and Mesi, so at least 2 goals on Tuesday please.

If he goes Spurs have to sell to R.M for 180m+, suppose the Spurs fans who like balanced books will be spouting it as good business. Itsme. Pep is a genius he is breaking all the Epl records. Walker wasn't appreciated by enough spurs fans, it does get to the players and can tip the balance when they decide to leave. Rose mentioned getting over the top abuse which he still remembers. Serge played well today and i prefer him to the one dimensional and slow trippier and he may well fill the hole left by walker who i hope wins the pl to show our coach that he didn't know how to use him. Paulinho said Mp didn't know how to use him another good player let go by the trophy less one.

Amazing how no top team wanted the likes of Walker or Rose until Mp arrived and improved them in 2014. I on't remember any offers for either of them prior to 2014. Have either been in the team of the year with Poch as manager? You sound like you started watching football 2 years ago. I think we need a proper winger and play-maker. Someone who can play at CM (not AM) and spray the ball all over the pitch accurately, a player with an attacking mindset who can read the game and thread the ball. I couldn't really suggest anyone apart from Luka, who Real must be looking to move on from now as their team is ageing. We'll probably be looking to sign Zaha, which isn't a bad thing, as GK is just not top 4 EPL quality. I have my heart on Winks succeeding in CM. He's got the talent, but he's too scared of making a mistake to pass the ball forward. He needs to turn the corner in his development. All in all, I think we're doing OK considering the injuries we've had and playing in the CL. If Toby, Rose, Wanyama and Lamela had been available we'd be at least 9 points better off I think. We certainly would of conceeded less goals.

palmover, any official bids for Walker from big clubs you can cite prior to MP? Didn't think so. Walker was often considered an accident waiting to happen. We'd have all laughed at the notion that a club would be prepared to spend £50m+ for Walker 4 years ago. Or even £30m. Aside from the finishing, that for me was our best performance of the season, What was really pleasing was that we brought our pressing game back. Burnley's players were pressed and harrassed all over the pitch and forced into making hurried decisions and errors. This was how I wanted us to play last week against City although clearly it is harder against much superior opposition. The players and Poch were obviously hurting after last week and fair play to them for responding accordingly. And how much difference it makes when you score rather than concede first early in the game.

Like the way you missed out some players. LOL. Who said sack MP some people need to read an understand that not everyone views things the way they do. MP had a window where the spurs players where the best 11 and couldn't win one trophy, he has a striker whose scored 90pl goals in 3 and half seasons what more does he need? and after 6 months of playing a balanced team he has reverted to type and is playing an unbalanced team that gets found out when playing top sides. After 3 and half seasons spurs are still a work in progress and some players are out growing the club, Walker is the 1st of many i fear.

Why would the result hurt? Spurs got 3pts, Kane will win the golden boot and got a lot close to breaking an EPl record. Just because i don't agree with your views don't try to be a hater. If you have valid football points make them. Other than that your on the wrong blog.

Results like yesterday hurt you palmover because you'd rather Poch failed than Spurs succeed. Over the last two seasons when Spurs have gone on winning runs you've disappeared from this site only to resurface at the first sign of a problem. I'll decide which forums I post on by the way.

Two goals against the Saints will give Harry two goal-scoring records .... EPL, and the major European Leagues. Now that will be worth watching!

I try my best to ignore you, however, you seem infatuated with me please find any post were i say MP should be sacked. Are you a stalker as you seem to be monitoring my movements and stop making up rubbish i have been a regular on this site and for 3 years. Please try and make football points like when you said Trippier was better than Walker, that was when i knew your football knowledge was limited, that's why you think MP is as good as the Managers who win trophies, and i think he has a lot to learn and while he learns spurs are not winning trophies with top players at the club.

palmover, I have never said Tripper is better than Walker simply because I don't believe it to be true. What I have argued against is the pedestal Walker has been placed upon.
