Pie, Mash and Knees Up.

Pie, Mash and Knees Up.

Next up is West Ham at our temporary home and our recent return to form must continue.

After our last meeting, when for a good long while we looked like we would cruise to an easy win - before it being too close for my liking - chances are this return will be a real blood and guts affair with only a sprinkling of quality - from either side.

We like West Ham face the ridiculous situation of playing two games in two days, but I expect us to have the drop on them in terms of fitness and that could prove a big difference.

We need a win to close the gap on Liverpool to just one point, dropping any points at home would be a disaster - it would take on even worse connotation if it was against the likes of West Ham, whose directors and fans seemed obsessed by our progress and the lack of theirs.

If there is one thing that Levy was absolutely dead right about is that they should have razed the Olympic stadium to the ground and started again and there isn't a sensible West Ham fan who wouldn't now agree. Ask any of their fans and the squirming begins, they squirm even more when you remind them of our home record against them - they've only won one of their last 15 league visits to our place (D5 L9), the last being back in October 2013.

Mind you, it's been awhile since we've done the double over them, the last time being the 12/13 season. As we chase down a top four finish, this is a must achieve this season. Despite how much difficulty they will give us, we have the quality to get the win and bank another 3 points - but expect some scares along the way.

West Ham always raise their game against us. We've become their cup final match in the absence of achieving nothing much more than them avoiding relegation, which is the battle they face yet again.

The bad news for us is that Andy Carroll - who has an injury record to beat even the combined record of Arsenals Wilshere and Liverpool's Sturridge - appears to have found some form after having a goal drought that looked like it would never end.

His brace against West Brom captured West Ham an undeserved 3 pts. Having now watched the game there is little doubt that you can see the difference that Moyes has now instilled in them; they have a formation, they hold their shape, they are all working hard for each other, forwards now chase back and close down and when they break, they now break in numbers and at speed. Sadly, their last win pulled them out of the bottom three and what it also did is underline their new 'never give in' attitude and I suspect give them renewed confidence.

Don't assume this game is a guaranteed three points, because they won't be. The best compliment I can give Moyes is that he's making them very hard to beat.

I expect we'll dominate possession and that they will start Carroll who will be a real test for Sanchez and Vert, especially if they start getting their crosses in.

They'll probably line up with a 3-5-1-1 and be tough to penetrate getting past them on the outside channels will be essential, Davies will have to up his game, and I'm pretty sure (and hope) Trippier will return to the bench.

Depending on how he came through the Swansea game, I wouldn't be at all surprised to see Victor start this one along side Sissoko, not because Poch will go safety first, but more because against their big units we will have to slog it out toe to toe and at times double up on Carroll. So Poch's game management will come to the fore here and when the conditions are right will bring on Dembele, Son, Winks or Lamela later on in the game when the gaps start appearing and we've made them run around like headless chickens for 60 mins or so.

Harry's return to (I hope) full fitness must mean that he starts. I expect Lamela to drop back to the bench.

So this is how I think we will line up;
Lloris,
Dier, Sanchez, Vert
Aurier Victor Sissoko Davies
Eriksen, Alli, Kane

I expect us to win by at least a two goal margin - in which case we'll mash them - or only one if Harry isn't yet fully recovered , but in any event there will be only one set of fans doing a knees up at the final whistle.

p.s. one to watch on their side is Lanzini - the one real quality player they have, the small Argentinian has yet to reach the heights of some of their previous South American imports, but he looks to me to be getting better and better - which is probably why we keep getting linked with taking yet another player off of our nursery club sometime in the future....

Judging by recent formations I would assume we will play a back 4 until Alderweireld is fit, so I reckon Son gets the nod over Sissoko and Dier plays alongside Wanyama. This game is never easy on paper but I reckon tomorrow will be different: 5-1 to Tottenham including a late screamer from Lamela

Playing twice in three days means the form book goes out the window. Its about who has more left in the tank and which manager can rotate better. One thing in Lamela's favour if he's now fully fit is he's always seemed to be able to run forever.

We were lucky to beat Swansea so West Ham is a 50:50 match, albeit at home. Pep Guardiola is reported to hate his team back passing so maybe Pochettino can give him a call to learn how he does it! Tripper one of the culprits, must have set a Premier league record for back and side ways passes. Maybe someone can count them!. This just runs the clock down and lets the opposition retain there shape. A long ball to LLorente and a challenge for the second ball, as a variation of play, would at least on occasion allow us to gain ground and pressurise the defence. The pattern was set in the first 5 mins. a repeat against West Ham may not produce a similar lucky result!

I definitely don't want to see Wanyama paired with Dier - that was a turgid combination when tried early last season. I would like to see Winks start with Wanyama in central midfield, but in a slightly more advanced role than he has been playing this season.

I agree with Jod that rotation is key here. I thought we would be able to make 5 changes from the team that started last night, but it looks as though Rose scuppers that. I'm not sure that Lamela is up to 2 games in 3 days, so I'm omitting him from my team which would be:

Lloris
Aurier, Sanchez, Vertonghen, Davies
Wanyama, Winks
Eriksen, Dele, Son
Kane

Gary .... That team looks pretty good and does give us the option of Dier and Lamela from the bench if we need some speed up front or to change the back around.

Gary Onedaysoon - As I said if Lamela is fully fit I'd back him to last the two matches better than Ali or Eriksen. It does depend on his fitness however. You occasionally get these road runners who never seem to run out of energy, Jenas was one, Lamela is another. For most players trying to go again with only a days rest is incredibly difficult, luckily for them as well as us.

I think Sissoko will come in and so will Aurier. I think we will go with a robust midfield to try and win that battle. Kane will play unless something happens with his health. I expect Dele and Eriksen to start even though Eriksen could do with a rest, he will get one at the weekend. It wouldn't suprose me if Dier starts in midifeld with Wanyama on the bench, he isn't going to be rushed back, but expect him to come on in second half like last night and may be start at weekend if there is no reaction to his knee.

Lloris, Aurier, Sanchez, Verts and Davies. Sissoko and Dier and Winks, Eriksen and Dele and kane. Expect Wanyama in 2nd half for Dier, Son may come on in second half for Eriksen or Dele and may be KWP for Davies for last half hour if all is going well.

camper - I am not sure what has happened with KWP he played one game, was talked about at beginning of the season has breaking into the first team and then nothing. Strange one, has he got above himself or has Poch changed his mind!.

I just think with Rose out and Verts playing every game we may have to call upon KWP even if its for last half hour for Davies to rest. Unless davies plays all 90 and Poch uses KWp in the FA cup. Rose injury and Toby's is making life difficult and its times like this I would expect Poch to trust a youngster like KWP if he is in his plans. I would expect Foyth to get another chance in the FA cup but even then we just haven't got cover at the back. I still say our transfer policy was niave regarding defence letting Vickers go out on loan and sellling wimmer yet going to a back 3. Surely if you play 3 at the back you need 2 CB to cover and a youngster. Also who is covering Verts? left sided CB, at a push Dier or Toby can but its not their natural position. I would say we need another CB probably a left sided one but also what is the point of having KWP in the squad if he can't be trusted to play when we are struggling with injuries and have so many games in concession!.

I would love Sess from Fulham but not sure we will get him yet or at all, he is improving and other clubs are now going for him.

I heard Shaw was fast I wonder whether he is worth coming in because quite frankly, Rose injuries are piling up just like Dembele, even if Rose stays may be we need another FB until Rose gets over his injury woes, that is if he is injured and its not a transfer stunt.

Jod, Dele looks the most natural athlete of the lot to me and always seems to have something extra in his engine - even at the end of matches. Not many players would have had enough stamina to make the run that he did for his goal last night. I'm sure he'll be fine tomorrow. Eriksen consistently covers more ground than any of our players although whether he can do it in two matches in such close proximity is another matter. But I'm sure both of those will start tomorrow. If Lamela is fit enough I'd include him and rest Son.

Having picked my team in an earlier post, and included Wanyama, I do agree with It'sMe - I think Poch will leave him on the bench. I think he'll start with Dier and Dembele in central midfield.

2 games in 2 days poor guys the money they earn, I really feel if they can't do that then there not fit enough. Just look at a gaa match hurling and that a none stop game for whole game, u get hit u get back up, in football u get a little shoulder u stay down, and the gaa players are amateurs and they have a 9 to 5 job and train after that.

That Arsenal Chlsea result was best result for us. If we win tomorrow we go 1 point behind Liverpool, 3 behind Chlsea and only 4 behind 2nd place Utd. Could we go on a run and take 2nd place lol.

I really hope we take our opportunity tomorrow and don't blow it.

I still think its going to be hard for top four but a win tomorrow gives us the momentum and makes things look very juicy. COYS

123spurs, re U23. That's beginning to worry me too. I thought Poch's philosophy and input was at ALL levels of the playing side. Hardly surprising there's no one mooted to be the next gem from our production line. Pundits and media were all heaping praise on Poch was developing from within.... I don't think that Winks will cope in midfield against the Spammers. He's a crab in terms of his play, I want the lad to do well, but he doesn't seem to have faith in his forward ability. I reckon Poch will start with Dier and Wanyama in CM. That isn't ideal, but I just think this game is too big for Winks. Its not like we're playing Real :-)

Critical - I actually think media and pundits over rate our youngsters. When I have seen Chelsea's youngster for example they seem much better than ours. Isn't U23 Edwards and Sterling etc think there has been some poor results with youngster recently, I wonder whether we need a re organsiation and may be someone who can be more integrated with Poch and his coaches to pass on what he does because bottom of the league is very concerning. Just looked at the U23 development squad yes its Edwards,Roles, Tanganga, Sterling, Tracey, Georgiou, Bennets, Amos all lads that were showing promise so what is happening to them. This squad should be knocking on the first team squad door, but its not looking like any of them are anywhere near making the grade especially when you think Poch philosophy is about team work and not individuals.

Fanman, let's not forget winks scored his first against west ham ... he's 21 ffs give the kid a chance .... look at sissoko in the same level as winks yet 8/9 years older .. I know who I would prefer to start ... trippier really is going backwards ... I think his time is up at Spurs, he's not good enough for regular 1st team action ... .. they are mooting Kane to Madrid 133m + bale, please as much as I would love bale back at Spurs, over Kane never in a million years ... p,us we can't afford his wages ... Levy, hi Gareth, listen we want you back but, we want you to take a 270k a week pay cut. Gareth, yeah sure Daniel, I love Spurs that much ... never gonna happen ... also imo Kane is better all round than bale. And 4 years younger and less injury prone.

Same Geoff, I am very pleased to how the team have resounded to the poor form recently .. 5 wins in 6 is excellent form ... it was a tough game at Swansea, Lucky or not we deserved to win .... only downside was the 2nd goal, it was a shame it didn't come earlier, it would of saved Kane coming on ... its going towards with less than 48 hours rest ... these fixtures are really stupid ... it caused injures to players. still with the 2-2 draw for Arsenal and Chelsea, that should be motivation enough ... 3 points is a must. my alarm is st for 06:30am ... Here we are again.. back to wembley tonight. West Ham do indeed up their game against us every time, as they consider they are our nemesis and playing us is the best games of their season. My concern is Sanchez, as Andy Carroll and co. will do their best to score, and try to rattle sanchez & Dele into fouls, yellow cards / red. He really has to keep calm, and not do these silly fouls, as like Dele referees are watching him now. (it was a clear push in the back by swansea defender as Dele went to head the ball to score for example..) I expect a tough game .. hard tackles and all out effort from both teams. Spurs have enough quality to prevail, and Harry to score again. COYS.

Gary Onedaysoon - Not sure I'd agree about Ali. In any case we are talking about stamina rather than athleticism. The thing that sticks in my mind is Lamela is the only Spurs player I've heard say he actually enjoys Poch's pre season fitness training. That tells you it isn't hurting him the same way its hurting the others.

Jod, what I meant by Dele's athleticism is that he seems to have the ability to conserve energy until he really needs it and is therefore able to play at full pelt for the whole 90 minutes. He always looks like he has something in reserve which is why I believe he is more likely to be able handle 2 games in 3 days. We'll see tonight anyway.

The atrocious conditions we played in yesterday worries me. As an ex Welsh rugby player I can't express just how much playing on a surface like that drains the legs. I think we need to use the bench very cleverly at around 55-60 minutes. I would go with Lloris, Aurier, Sanchez, Verts, Dier, Wanyama, Dembele, Ali, Eriksen, Son & Kane.

I would have taken a Chelsea win yesterday more than a draw. I would rather put a bit of daylight between Arsenal and us in the race for the top 4 rather than keep all teams bunched together. The way I look at it, City have won the PL already. I expect Chelsea and Man U to deal with multiple comps better than the rest, given their respective squads (this remains to be seen, of course, but we certainly haven't managed CL and PL together very well). That leaves a 3 way fight for 4th between Liverpool, Arsenal and us. In that scenario, I'd rather try to eliminate one of those 3 from contention as early as possible and let us fight it out with the remaining team, in this case Liverpool.

Belgian, I know what you are saying about the gap, but I thought last night's draw suits us better. Win tonight and we DO have a bit of day light between us and the gooners. Also, getting closer to Chelsea keeps us in touch and adds more pressure for them. I think Andy Carroll is more often the culprit when it comes to silly fouls/dirty challenges etc. Sanchez will be fine, if he plays. I am not concerned about Sanchez, at best he is a little bit too 'handy' with his hands and that foul he didn't get a yellow wasn't worth a yellow anyway imo. He did not deliberate foul the player, it wasn't dangerous. Why do people think every foul is a yellow. There was no malice or intent, he just tried to wrap his foot around the playyer to get the ball and was slightly of balance due to the heaviness of the pitch, right call, talking to. I admit he can use his hands a bit too much sometimes that is a habit he needs to break.

He is young and overall he is doing great and I have no concerns about him or his progression.

I think tonight we really need the points to take us closer to top four and we will have no choice but to make some changes. read Dembele is available for selection, whether he will start I don't know. Comments re winks, I am not sure he is having a great season, he does ok, but he is playing within himself of late, tidy, works hard but not really having that killer pass, so not creating or scoring but he is so young and now he is established in the first team he has to improve and the area I think he needs to improve is more daring passes forward and possibly some forward runs himself. However, he is still good enough to do a job and is good at keeping the ball. Having said that Dembele can be accused of not scoring or creating enough as well. I still think Dier will either start in a back 3 or in midfield. I cannot see Dembele and Wanyama starting being risked too early. I think Dier will get the nod because he is in the groove but may be subbed in the second half if the game allows us to.

I think we need to win the midfield, that is the key and we need to make sure we stayed focused for the whole game and not let in at the end.

I have to say also that I agree about Trippier. He has lost some form lately and is not playing as well as he can and has done. I think we are lucky to have a good alternative in Serge Aurier and I presume he'll be back tonight.

When we first signed Sanchez, I had concerns about him being a bit raw and not polished enough. I though there were better defenders out there for the price. In the meantime, more polished defenders (Van Dijk) are going for almost double what we paid for Sanchez, and I have to admit that Sanchez has acquitted himself far better than I expected him to. I've already said I was wrong about him, but more importantly, my mindset has completely changed - from being very suspicious about him, to actually defending him. What we saw on Tuesday was his "ugly"/reckless side, the side I was worried about in the first place. It's there, but to such a small extent that even his biggest doubters (ie me) would be foolish to single that out. He has been reckless so rarely, and solid so often, that I now lean on the side of affording him the benefit of the doubt. He is young and will have his wobbles/reckless moments, but he has been very good so many times that everyone can forgive him for his rare mistakes. You have to take the bad with the good, and so far the good far outweighs the bad. I also had qualms about the price, but seeing what it takes to sign a top defender like VVD, we would never have been in the running for his services. I still like Michael Keane, who cost a lot less, but Sanchez has actually had a better season so far. We have gotten what we paid for. That's all you can ask for.

I think the Kyle-Walker Peters one is simple. We only had Trippier as recognised right-back and he was injured, so Kyle got his chance, grabbed it and was unlucky that we then signed Aurier, he's probably the best no.3 choice right back in the Premier League. Hope he at least gets 90 mins on Sunday!

Personally, I was hugely disappointed with Poch against Swansea. He let his team try and play tippy happy football as if it was mid summers day at Wembley. We played Llorente and declined opportunity after opportunity to get the ball in the box instead playing sideways and backwards. With Trippier's form I'm starting to get worried that it's more than the RB himself, but instead the coaching staff that is knocking his best attribute out of him. Perhaps they did the same with Walker who was also scared of losing possession and never crossed the ball.

For tonights game, I just hope that the Spurs boys remember that we owe them after the cup debacle. That should be motivation enough to smash them out of site with our better players. That's if we work harder, win the physical battle and own Wembley like we're capable of. My guess is Swansea's bench is a hint to who plays and I would think that Kane, Sissoko and Aurier are nailed on to play. Less sure about others like Winks and Wanyama. That depends on how fresh Dier is and whether Poch wants to play a back 3. We must get at Winston Reid in this game. He is a yellow card waiting to happen and can't play at this level without the shirt pulling and constant cheating. We need to expose him and constantly run at him tonight.

BlockD, the lads shouldn’t have any trouble with Poch’s tactical talk as from what I’ve seen this season it is based upon old Harry’s advice with one slight modification ie: Ok lads get out there and walk about a bit.

Kyle Walker Peters is already as good as Trippier in my book, I'd happily sell Trippier this summer and promote KWP.

Recent results in the PL over the holiday period have largely been ln our favour and to take full advantage we simply have to keep on winning, particularly against opposition of the calibre of West Ham United, and particularly at home.

The recent controversies re penalties etc only serves to back up what I have said for several seasons, that standard of refereeing in the PL regresses season by season, and the newest recruits every season only confirm this to be the case. The fact that no PL referee is going to the WC finals is self explanatory.

Frank, that may be true but is is such fun to see Wenger's eyesight magically restored when on the wrong end of a penalty decision, whether correct or not.

Wengers got eyes in the back of his head when a decision goes against the Gooners. And eyes up 'is Arsenal when getting a dodgy one in their favour!

I agree Harry, Wenger's selective blindness is legendary. He is being asked to explain his comments yet again when he is already on a charge for previous comments. Why don't they just take the bull by the horns and ban the prat for the rest of the season.

Allardyce says he is resigned to losing Barkley during this window. The question is where will he go, will it be to us, will this be the "early business" Pochettino promised.

He'll hit North London very soon. Have a medical for Spurs but still end up signing the dotted line at Stamford Bridge!

Frank-I will be disappointed if we don't get Barkley after all the links we have had with him. He turned Chelsea down in the summer for a reason I was hoping it was because he wants to come to us. Will Everton take it to the final day before they relase him, I think they will if its us who want him because they don't seem to like levy. They will get what they can from us, will Barkley be happy to pre sign and stay at Everton for remainder of the season, not sure, he may well be itching for his new challenge to start.

hoping we get something donw this window even if its pre agreements for the summer, but all is quiet as usual, just silly gossip it seems.

Poch will play a strong side, as strong as he can get away with because he will not want to lose this one, after the CC and opportunity to get closer to top four. I still think we need a good midfield and say it would be risky to start Dembele and/or Wanyama so I expect Dier to start, but if he goes for a back 3 then may be we will see either Wanyama or Dembele start as well although we could start Sissoko with winks in midfield but I would be slightly worried with that combo.

It'sME... You know what? When the TW news is all quiet on the Tottenham front, then it probably means good news... But don't quote me on that.

You know what. Wanyama looked pretty strong and sharp, considering his long lay off and the awful weather conditions on Tuesday. Lamela is also looking strong after his long time out. But, match fitness is altogether a different beast.

Comments on Trippier, can't say I have ever rewally rated him, he is alright but said a while ago, he just isn't good enough to get past a player and throws his arms at people which shows me he is slightly anxious at lsoing the ball, always wanting players next to him to pass inside to, very really willing to take a player on or try and get further up the pitch unless there is lots of space. When there isn't space you got to have confidence to take a player on and have some pace to do so and get back if you lose the battle, Trippier has neither, so its mostly tip tapping inside, we then lose that offensive play Walker brought and that pace and willingness to take a player on opened up the space when it wasn't there. Trippier's asset though is his ability to cross, but we don't have early runs into the box to utilise it often and when there is a run he seems reluctant to cross it from deep mainly because it seems he is anxious at having the ball at his feet and being pressed and throwing his arms around for support. I think that body language shows when a player is anxious and not confident with the ball and usually when they are being pressed.

For me I think we have lost more than we have gained selling Walker as Aurier hasn't been great, but he looks more daring and may be better next season, if not then I think we need to consider a RB with more pace and ability to get up and down the ptich more and that may mean letting one of our current ones go. Is KWP the answer, not sure, when he played he didn't seem that fast either but he did seem good at one on ones, but can't judge on that one game.

I don't think he is but if Poch does then I'll go with it. He doesn't have to be better, just very good or good enough.

I'm never much cop when it comes to prospective signings anyhow... I didn't want Poch and then... I didn't get why Poch wanted Wanyama. By the same token, I rated the likes of Tom Carroll and Andros Townsend. I was at least right about Harry though. :-)
