Officials - Newport v Tottenham (27/1/18)

The Football Association have now announced the Match Day officials that will take charge of the game between Newport County and Tottenham Hotspur this Saturday.

Newport County host Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday January 27 for the FA Cup fourth Round tie at Rodney Parade and the match carries a 5.30pm kick off.

Referee: Roger East
Assistant Refs: Gary Beswick and Harry Lennard
Fourth Official: Oliver Langford

Match Day referee East has officiated 18 games in 2017/18, showing 62 yellow cards and two red cards.

He took in 33 games in 2016/17 with a return of 140 yellow cards and five red cards.

His highest card that year was eight yellow cards which he showed in matches between Oxford v Millwall, MK Dons v Northampton and Brighton v Ipswich Town.

He took charge of 39 matches in 2015/16 and in those games, across all competitions and football divisions, he handed out a total of 119 yellow cards and two red cards.

He was most card happy in the match between Brighton and Sheffield Wednesday in May with a total of eight yellows being shown.

Let`s hope it`s not another repeat and more of the players edge closer to automatic bans.

On reflection .... we don't have another game for a week so there's no need to take any chances. When the game is won, use the bench.

As my score prediction for the Saints match was deemed too offensive and was edited out and, was so far wrong anyway... I'm going to go for a restrained and conservative, boringly boring 0-0 in this one. I do hope this is okay.

Geof, as a reminder: We play Man U at Wembley on Wednesday. That of course will definitely be a big Spurs win!

I would challenge anyone to defend that pile of crap ... a lucky flick and thankfully Kane scored and saves us yet again ... how sissoko gets game time is beyond me ... llorente showed he's not good enough for us ... trippier pathetic and needs to be sold ... KWP, he's not a LB .. he's right footed .. Foyth.. looks a talent ... wanyama... thought this was beneath him .... only when Alli, and son came on did it look like, we might scrape a draw ... pathetic overall performance.

heres my assessment for what it is worth.

Our players didn't manage the pitch or conditions anywhere near like they did, and while they will be used to these conditions it doesnt mean we couldn't have been cleverer and played differently. it really makes me wonderif players lack inteligence. You have to play differently when the conditions are not conducive and we didn't just like we dont play differenty when we get a striker in like Llorente, we play one way regardless and this is imo a lack of intelligence.

players performances, too many times muscled of the ball and gave ball away. Vorm was ok, trippier poor again, cant get passed a division 2 player and cant defend properly either. he was at fault for the goal.

Foyth - I like this lad. he has confidence, intelligence and is good on the ball, he will need to muscle up but for his age and his first season he is doing alright. One for the future, no quarms with him at this stage.

Dier had some bad moments but he didnt hide and he was better in the second half. Verts reliable as ever even though he was tested with the conditions. KWP - very poor. Looked scared, played as though he was scared and it was obvious a boy against men. He has a long way to go to get anywhere near the first team, but in his defence he was playing on the left and is really a RB. However, how he handled the game was poor considering how Foyth handled himself and the game. KWP imo needs to go out on loan, another one who imo isn't necessarily proven to make it for us, he needs to get game time and then we reassess.

Dembele another average game, lost the ball, did very little to effect the game, we need better now in the middle if we are to push on next season. Wanyama - not his best game but he isn't fit and that game would have been hard for someone who isn't match fit, not concerned about him.

kane was KANE, didn't get much help with Llorente next to him, and he lost ball a few times, but hey, that doesn't matter, he got us the goal and is class anyway. Sissoko, whatever MP says about his worth, he is lieing. You cannot expect MP to say any different, its not his style, but underneath I am sure he is as frustrated as us. If Sissoko is with us next season then I would say it as to be as an squad player, if he gets into the first team next season then we have no ambition because it would mean we haven't brought in better. Sissoko is woeful for all his work and runs, and he is never going to help us improve. Llorente, just as bad as Sissoko, can't even hold the ball up or win headers a lot of the time, he is not helped us at all other than that one game against RM. Why oh why did we get him, just like Janssen, Soldado, very poor recruitment. He has to go next season, cant see anyone having him this window, but no way should we have him next season.

Son made a diffeence as did Dele, and overall I think we deserved the goal but where lucky not to be punished and now we need to turn up at wenbley and put this tie to bed. If we dont then we only have ourselves to blame.

Another game isnt exactly what we had in mind with our fixture list, but may be it will be good to keep players fit. I would have liked to see Lamela, but may be the pitch may have been too much too soon after his injury! or may be he is on his way out on loan.

For me as it stands I think we need to let Sissoko and Llorente go and we need to start replacing Dembele and start looking at a pacey expereinced RB and if Rose goes a LB. Glad we are still in it but it was not great

Fix fix fix. We were asked to play Llorente so we only had ten men who were trying. Newport said give us a goal then we will give you one at the end so we can return to Wemberlee for a decent pay cheque. Why on earth does Poch include Llorente... can he not see that he is totally ineffective, lazy and cumbersome. What wages is this guy on? Kane moves, Llorente stands. We were lucky and clueless today... really fear for Wed v Man You and then Pool ..they will both destroy us but hey we are still in the cup. Well done Newport... enjoy your day out at Wembley. You could have won this today but take the money and climb out of Div 2.

It reinforces what the 'magic' of the FA Cup is all about. Newport were brilliant and I almost (ALMOST) felt sorry for them at the end. On the bright side .... we get to see our team play an extra game. That can't be bad .... I mean, we do like to watch them, don't we? Interesting month coming up. Poch obviously wanted to rest Davies and as Rose is injured, KWP was the obvious choice at left back and I don't think he was as bad as some have said. He has actually played on the left many times before. I thought Trippier played okay and got forward well and put in a good few crosses. (Was it his fault he was left to mark 2 players from the cross that led to their goal)? Still he should've got his head on it... Foyth did well imo and has a cool head on his young shoulders. He has very good close control and looks a promising prospect... Lamela and Winks are also injured, so who else should have played in DM given that Dier was playing CB in a back 3? .... Surely Llorente needs to play in these sort of matches and especially as Poch didn't start Son and Dele and, Eriksen was out recovering from sickness? I don't think the line-up was the reason for our poor first half performance. But, I'm not sure exactly what was the reason. And, given that we were 1-0 down and that Newport had worked their socks off in the 1st half and tired in the 2nd, it didn't surprise me that Son and Dele improved things....... Harry didn't play that well but got his goal. Wanyama looked rusty as hell, Dembele was great at holding on to the ball as usual but wasn't exactly creative in any way and I'll repeat (sorry) but I thought Sissoko was good. Not great but he certainly wasn't bad.... It was poor from Spurs overall. But it was an excellent effort from Newport... Great FA cup match though. Just like the old days. And hey, we didn't lose..... So, Newport get their day out at Wembley and Spurs get some more practise there, in readiness for the final.

E17. Wishing that any player breaks a leg (even a Gooner) is not good show but hoping that it's a Spurs player is somehow worse and not very helpful really. To be trivial and to say the very least! Spurs are still in the cup and with pool and arse out only need M.city, Man.u and chavs to get knocked out. Do spurs know how to play long balls to a big striker missing out a rather soggy midfield, because if they do it wasn't showing yesterday. Trying to play football on that pitch was suicide. Llorente doesn't look any better than Janssen, however, i don't think spurs play to his aerial strength.

Wentworth, we only had 9 men trying because we had sick-coco the clown as well as the person who is masquerading as a forward alongside kane. Poch really has a lot to answer for. No Lamella, Sick-coco in,not playing top the conditions and ther pitch. They played and used the wind and conditions in a way that we couldn't. This ust goes to show how fragile we really are when not playing a proper team out there. It also shows how one dimensional we are in that we can't even change our game plan against a team like Newport. SHAME ON YOU POCHETINO. HE COMPLAINS THAT THE PLAYERS HAD NO MOTIVATION YET he IS THE ONE THAT HAS STATED CATTEGORICALLY THAT THE fa CUP ISN'T WORTH GOUNG FOR AND THAT THERE ARE ONLY 2 TROPHYS, THE PREM AND THE CL, ANYTHING ELSE IS BENEATH HIM. So how on earth does one expect a team to be able to motivate itself for a cup competition if the so called manager has that sort of attitude. He NEEDS to build a winning mentality into this team and you see it time after time, against the "lesser" teams we are dire and never get up for the game, but come Madrid it's a different story Absolutely horrendous management. This is NOT the way to go Poch so sort it or go to Madrid please and get rid of the clown or again go to Madrid.

As we all saw yesterday, spurs were in big trouble for 60 mins. We came out on the back foot again.. perhaps a bit complacent, and were embarrassed by a league 2 team. Poch did say our players had to respect the opponent and match their fight and commitment, which we did not for most of the game. I really cant see why poch keeps playing Sissoko, he messes up 9 / 10 attacking moves, does not track back properly has not got good close ball control. We had no AMF support to Harry / Llorente until Dele & sonny. Their goalie made 2 good saves which gave them more confidence. Foyth looks good, calm under pressure, Young Kyle at RB was targeted by them, Trippier should have headed the cross away but did not. Again Toby was missed in these situations... Now all players need to get their heads together for Man Utd game, and poch has to get his big teams opponents (and smaller teams ) tactical shape and game plans B & C ready, as only plan A is just not enough.. When opposition teams "swarm" pressure on our players, we must pass quickly to nullify their pressure, and gain advantage of the space available, which means we need to support our player with the ball. I thought plan A (whatever that is) didn't seem to be working in the first half so MP switched to plan B (whatever that is) and saved the game .... which is why we're still in it. Team talks must be really confusing to the players when they try to keep up with all the plans (whatever they are) that the supporters talk about. I thought the main thing we lacked yesterday was a creative midfielder to control the game and create more openings. It could have been a lot worse .... just ask the home team at Anfield.

Absolutely Geof. Having a creative midfielder behind our attackers is key to how we play as an attacking unit. If Moura does come I'd like to see Eriksen drop into a deeper role with Kane, Son, Dele and Moura (or Lamela) ahead of him. Winks can provide cover for Eriksen. He's not there yet (Winks) but I think this is the position that will make the most of his skills and meet our needs.

I think Winks would have made a difference against Newport, Gary. He likes to move the ball forward and when he passes it's usually to the front of a player ... so they have to go forward too.

Chris, let's be fair, Poch has never said the FA Cup is not worth going for. What he did say was that the EPL and the Champions League were the priorities. What he meant was that it is impossible to play your strongest team in every competition and therefore the domestic cups would be where there is rotation. But that's only in the early rounds. The team he played yesterday comprised largely first team players. Compare that to how Arsenal lined up against Forest in the last round. The team we fielded against West Ham in the League Cup comprised more first-teamers than any of the teams who reached the Quarter Finals and that includes Leicester who don't even have European football this season. That we lost from a winning position was down to complacency, of which, as manager, he does take some responsibility.

I think Poch’s starting formation was at fault here. Three at the back including the rookie and Dier was never going to work, particularly with a right footer playing atleft back. The BT Sport’s team said as much. not one shot at goal in the first half. left us chasing the game in the second. Poch must take the blame for this..
Stan Rosenthal
28/01/2018 13:46:00

Poch actually experimented with his formation yesterday and set it up to be a very attacking one and yet he is being criticised for not having a plan B to follow a plan A and also not really adapting his tactics from our so-called 'usual game'. Well this was a diferent formation than usual, (a new plan A, if you like), which he changed completely in the 2nd half, as Geof has already pointed out..... Any lack of commitment from the team is surely not about formations or line-ups. Attitude and application is more a mental thing, less a tactical one.... We know full well that that team should've been good enough to be winners.

I have to say that Newport played a lot better in the 1st half v THFC than I've seen WBA play in the PL for most of this season. They did however play well v Liverpool. Even so, if it were Spurs losing to WBA, supporters would still be up in arms and would not be giving WBA any credit for being a PL team... We should perhaps stop looking at how the opposition look on paper before a match and notice more how they actually played on the day. And Newport played very well in spite of their league standing. Whilst Spurs were poor, given theirs.

It's the FA Cup. It's even less predictable than the PL. That's the wonder of it. Let's face it, Newport were playing the game of their lives and their performance was awesome. Nobody should take that away from them by saying they were not good enough to win because for much of the game they were. When you break it all down, any football game is eleven players against eleven players so, at some level, they start off even. After that .... who knows.

The one bright spot for me yesterday was the performance of Foyth. Yes, he's got a lot to learn defensively but he has a lovely technique and looks composed under pressure. He looks like Jan's natural successor.

It was disappointing that Toby didn't get a start given that he had declared himself fit earlier in the week. Clearly Poch didn't agree. Given how cautious Poch is of re-introducing players after a long injury it's hard to see how he will get a start in the next few fixtures which would be really disappointing.

Let's read what MP really thinks with some of his selections. First it is obvious he doesnt trust or after Llorente to score because he played Kane as well. No way should we need to out and out striker against a second tier club. I thought Llorente was brought like Janssen to back up Kane when he needs resting or injured and to come on as a second striker if we are chasing the game, simply because we play with one striker in Kane. So to play two has done nothing for Kanes long haul season again and shows me MP cannot trust Llorente, which begs to believe why the he'll have we brought another dud second striker,. KANE should be rested in such low league games, we should have a second striker capable of playing such a game, start it and only if it goes tits up bring Kane on. So as I see it MP is doing nothing to protect Kane and still hasn't got that striker we need. Fancy having two out and out striker against a league 2 outfit and still can't win, very bad recruitment. Sissoko gets all the criticism. But what about that lamp post Llorente? At least Sissoko runs around unlike Llorente who is totally static and in fact gets in the way. He has never moved to the wings or come back into our half. Very poor control (like Sissoko) and no idea how to look for space. Far worse than Janssen.

Im .... If Kane told MP he felt he needed a rest I think MP would make sure he got it. But if Kane told MP he really wants to play I think that would happen too. It seems to me that Kane is goal greedy and wants to play as much as he can .... and that's just the way we want him to be. In Kane's case it's quite probably more about his decision than MP's .... he is, after all, the best judge of how his body and mind are feeling. If I was Kane at the moment you wouldn't be able to keep me off the pitch, any pitch.

Sorry for the sarcasm Geof., but I am sure the management TEAM (inc the medics) with the all the technical stuff they strapped the players with will know when it's best to rest him. But like AVB & Bale, Poch is reliant upon Kane....as he can't seem to find any strikers that will improve the squad. As much as I was looking forward to the World Cup, I fear our lads will be slated for any failure, seeing that we will have burnt them out by summer.

CS ... I get your point and, of course you're quite right. I just think that Kane is a special case (not surprising really) and will get listened to more than most players by anyone in management. The other thing is that Kane is a long way from 'stupid' and I doubt he would do anything that would have an adverse affect on his ability to play. TBH, at this stage of his career I wouldn't be surprised if, deep down, the last thing he really wants is another striker to ease his load. Just my idle speculation ... a bit like the media!

He get's paid to play football for THFC. ... Harry will play no more football this season than any other top player in Europe. And, if we get knocked out of the CL and the FA cup in the next rounds, he'll be playing a lot less matches than others who's teams progress in those competitions... He's young, fit and strong and hungry to play. This is a good thing.......

It's funny. I can't ever remember people saying Ledley King must be rested. In fact, it was often the opposite. With many supporters hoping and praying he would be okay to play the next game, as he was deemed 'undroppable' and 'indispensable'. And, the man was so physically knackered with his dodgy knee problem, that he couldn't train with the team, only got to do gym work to keep up his strength and was physically unable to play in half of a seasons matches..... If Ledley declared himself fit enough to play because his pain was just bearable enough for him to handle, he played. Harry has no such concerns...

I can't remember Jimmy Greaves being 'rested' either ... or being told to cut down on his drinking and smoking (if I remember correctly). He did okay. Mind you, I could understand it if Dele needed a rest.

George Best... Spent his weeks, far away from the training ground, only to be preoccupied with full-time boozing in a King's Road pub and extra-time canoodling with the latest Miss World. He'd turn up on the Saturday, 5 minutes before kick-off to be the first name on the team sheet, be introduced to and shake hands with his unfamiliar team mates and, seriously hungover with his eyes half shut, play a blinder in the first half. He'd drink a bottle of Tesco's wine at half time, make love to his girlfriend in the changing room bath, hop out for the second half, dribble around the entire opposition and sometimes, (just for a laugh), his own team mates, look up, chip the goalkeeper, score the winner and be the outstanding MotM. He'd get a plane back to London, have another drink or ten and a bit more o slap n tickle with a blonde or two. Go to bed, go to sleep and wake up at Wembley, 3pm on a Saturday, sometime in May!

At the other end of the spectrum. Harry Kane is so clean living and so dedicated to the game of football... That when he scores a hat-trick, his idea of celebrating that night, is a kiss n cuddle with his loved one, a cup of cocoa, an early night and, then to dream peacefully of scoring yet more hat tricks in his sleep.

I suppose having to play a replay isn't the worst thing in the world, credit to Newport, they fought hard and earned their replay. However, as far as the schedule is concerned, we needed a replay like we need a hole in the head. While nothing catastrophic has happened and we may yet go on a long cup run, there is still something a bit underwhelming about being forced to a replay by a League Two team, and having to fit in yet another game in what already a daunting February schedule. Given how we struggle to juggle multiple competitions, we could have done with qualifying easily and shifting our focus to other things. We again lacked any sort of creativity without Eriksen, and a midfield 4 of Dier, Mousa, Victor and Sissoko was a strange decision I thought.

BS .... We do need a hole in the head .... it helps us breathe! :-) If we draw City in the next round all our Cup worries might be over!
