Spurs Have The Whip Hand This Time v Arsenal. Don`t We?

Spurs Have The Whip Hand This Time v Arsenal. Don`t We?

This weekend's game pits us against our biggest rivals, Arsenal.

For many Spurs fans, this is the first fixture they look to when the Premier League schedule is published. As is often the case, it will be a game with big ramifications.

The key points this time around are:

* When Spurs finished above Arsenal for the first time in 22 years last season, many Arsenal supporters dismissed the achievement as a one-off thing. With only 12 games to go, a victory on Saturday could create a 7-point gap which will be hard to overcome for Arsenal. Not only would it virtually eliminate Arsenal's chances of finishing in the top 4, it would confirm a true changing of the guard in North London.

* On current form, Spurs have the advantage. In the last 6 games, we are unbeaten (including a win against top 6 rival Manchester United and a draw at Anfield) and carrying momentum. Arsenal, on the other hand, may have eliminated Chelsea from the League Cup in their last 6 games, but they have also lost twice, to Swansea and Bournemouth.

* Head to head, in the last 10 games, Spurs have won 2, Arsenal have won 4, and the teams have drawn 4. While we lost at the Emirates this season, our 2 victories have come in the league, at home, in the last 2 seasons. Winning at Wembley would make it 3 home wins in a row.

* On the pitch, there will be many subplots. Harry Kane has said in the press recently that he still plays with a chip on his shoulder from being released by Arsenal. Arsenal will be looking to make a statement after revamping their squad in the January transfer window. Alexis Sanchez, Francis Coquelin and Olivier Giroud are gone, and Mkhitaryan and Aubameyang are in. With players of undoubted talent have joined Arsenal they have not only lost key players but also failed to address glaring weaknesses in their back four.

* All in all, as long as Spurs can avoid costly mistakes (of which we were guilty again for Liverpool's opening goal) and can keep Arsenal's attacking talent quiet, there will be many holes to exploit in Arsenal's defence. While Spurs can count on a fully-fit squad, there are serious doubts for Arsenal over the availability of Petr Cech, Danny Welbeck and Nacho Monreal. Santi Cazorla remains a long-term absentee.

My prediction: Spurs 2 Arsenal 1.

What are your thoughts and predictions?

Here we are again.. Gooners manager trying to have a dig at poch and Dele... It shows how much he and their fans are worried about how spurs have improved last 3 years. IMO harry to score 2 and spurs win 3-1. As to their new signings, we dealt with Auby the B Dortmund player already, and Mity as well previous games. Dele has to be calm and play his A game, no diving or tantrums, just quick passing and movement. Toby back in the team.. So Lloris tripps toby sanchez jan rose, victor moussa, ericsson Ali and Harry. Subs Lamela Dier, Vorm, Aurier, Sonny, Lorente. COYS

I am pleased to see last night the young lad Foyth is getting better, he has tremendous calmness about him when pressured and can play out from defence, so not too long till he has more confidence and (2 yrs) before he can step in for Toby.

Let's see our lads dominate sufficiently that Mr. Wenger spends much time kicking plastic water bottles and generally losing his composure. 4 x 0 Spurs win and after the match Mr. Wenger blames it on some obscure referee's decision. I'd like to see a brief entry by Mr. Moura at the end, with a quick introductory assist to a goal by our Harry Kane.

High press meets high press...whose the fittest? Our defence vs their defence? Whose better in the box, them or us? Who is better at angles in the Box Ramsey or Alli? Do we have the better ability to pass our way up through midfield vs their ability to move the ball upfield ? who will find the pockets of space better, Ozil or Eriksen? Who has the better wide men?...in the final analysis it could come down to who wants it more? IIMO - Who ever scores first will be key to the outcome of the match! COYS!

At last a pre-match article so that we can argue, discuss, debate, moan, praise, or condemn the teams performance, the ref, individual performances, and of course most importantly the result. Regarding my own result forecast, I think it will be very close, with a draw possible, but we mustn't lose. Hopefully this article will generate 100+ posts as they used to do. Congrats on the article Belgian and thank you.

We need Dele to step up or sit on bench for a few games, rather then looking for attention with diving and silly yellow cards. We were very poor in first game, going with my head I think with arse new signings and needing to win they might pip us.

Not gonna happen 123spurs. You know if Alli and Dier are fit, they'll start. Personally, I'd start with Dembele and Wanyama. Dier to replace Dembele late on. If winning, give Moura a cameo, taking off Dele.

Can't decide between Trippier and Aurier, though I'd prefer Aurier for his aggression. Rose may be rested after making a 90 mins return v Newport, but can be brought or later to mantain team energy.

We might see Lloris, Verts, Toby, Trippier, Davies, Wanyama, Dembele, Eriksen, Son, Dele + Harry.

As for their signings, Auba may need more time to settle, Mkhi should be up to speed, Wheelchair is returning to some form, but their defence can be pressured. Please, please score 1st and go with aggression from the off. 3-1. Should be another big crowd. COYS!

Poch has a serious decision to make in terms of shape. Arsenal have a very good attack. No doubt whatsoever that Aubameyang is a definite upgrade from Giroud and has always been difficult for us to defend. Mikataryn offers a different attacking danger than Sanchez, definitely not as tricky or as clinical but can still be a danger. I don’t see Wenger playing both Lacazette and Aubameyang together but whether he does or not they will be dangerous. Does Poch set up to attack in a 4-1-4-1 with Aurier, Toby, Verts, Rose, Dembele, Lamela, Son, Eriksen, Dele, Kane or play more defensively with a 3-2-1-3-1 with Toby, Sanchez, Verts, Aurier, Rose, Wanyama, Son, Eriksen, Dele, Kane. Also does he start Moura in place of Son? That would allow Son to come on as a game changer if things are not going well or to add greater fire power. Tough calls.

LM can come in the replace Delli Alli who just got carded for a dive. LOL. After 11 seconds LM gets his first Spurs goal on assist from Lamela, who will come on for Llorente. NO NO NO. The fantasy now has gotten wildly implausible. Lamela will come on for Lloris. NO NO NO. Lamela will come on for Pav. It's getting late. All is blending together. Anyway, LM will not start, but come on as a late sub. That's the Poch way with new players. Slip them in when I'm visiting the loo.

Spurs are coming out of two top PL games where the belief in their own game has been reinforced (not that they needed it). Given that, I would expect that they continue to perform the same way .... in which case we should win. But, it is football!

Personally, I think it will be the same team that started against Liverpool. The team selected for the Newport game is the clue. 10 changes other than Son and had Moura not been cup-tied I'm sure he would have started instead of Son. Definite case for swapping Wanyama for Dier but Poch likes Dier and I suspect he won't want to change a team that has done very well in the last two games against big teams.

Dele and Kane can be a lethal combination. So why drop Dele? No manager is fool enough to drop one of his most talented players simply on the strength of receiving a yellow card. Bookings are punishments for individual players. If they receive too many cards then they eventually get banned for a few games which then also punishes the team. Why impose a self made ban on Dele who has been playing well? Why punish your own team, unnecessarily?

Now, after so many concerns about a Spurs squad lacking in depth, that for the first time this season has every single one of them fit, some folks want to seemingly weaken it by dropping certain players?

If Pochettino were to leave out Dele tomorrow, surely it should be for tactical reasons. And not because he has been a naughty little boy.

BS, I tend to go to a pub before I get to Wembley (in town), as the local ones near the stadium get extremely busy... But as it's an early kick-off that could prove difficult. I've not been to one near the stadium myself but there are a few allocated to THFC supporters. I'm not certain of their names. Sorry, that was not much help I'm afraid.

Last game I attended was against Liverpool earlier this season. I got into the stadium easily enough, and security was a breeze. We had a drink inside the stadium and it wasn't that expensive (certainly not the most expensive drink we paid that weekend in London...). What it did lack was a bit of atmosphere. Wembley remains very "sanitised". I just don't want to go into central London just to have a drink, then be in a rush to head to the stadium. I'd rather arrive at the stadium around 11.30 and try to have a beer then. For the Liverpool game, we arrived via Wembley Park and I certainly didn't see any pubs on the way to the stadium. I think there might be some if you arrive via Wembley Central - I may give that a try.

MP can set up with a back 4 or 5, i have a sneaky feeling he will go with a back 5. I would like to see a 433 with dem(dm) Ce/ Ali(am/cm) Son/Moura(Wam) and kane (CF). Games vs top6 are always 50/50, however, Spurs defence is stronger and i think Kane will cause them more trouble than Ababam will cause to spurs. 3-1 spurs.

BS, The Torch is a pub allocated to Spurs fans on semi finals or finals days. When you come out of Wembley Park station turn left instead of right as you would to go to the stadium. It's only a few minutes walk from the station. I suspect it will be very busy though. i can't vouch for it either - it's about 30 years since I set foot in it.

I wonder how the two week break after the Arsenal and Juve games will affect MP's selection. Will he play key players in both games knowing they'll have a decent time to recover or will he rotate them. Does rotating them mean he has to decide which game is his priority. Or given the like-for-like players in the squad, will he share the playing time around. It's going to be interesting.

Here's a snippet from the THFC official website, on Moura, from French journalist, Julien Laurens:

"At PSG, he used to play a lot of teams who were very deep and basically playing with 11 men in their box, so he’s used to that kind of opposition. Maybe that’s the kind of profile that Spurs have been lacking this year because with Dele or even Son, even though they’re very good at dribbling, they still need space to do that but Lucas can dribble in literally no space at all. Also, he puts in the effort to defend and track back. He’s only 25 and with that potential, I think he’s a very, very good signing for Spurs. Let’s not be too impatient, though, because again he’s coming in January, he hasn’t played much at all this season so although he’s very fit, he would probably like a bit of match fitness. I wouldn’t expect him to be at his best straight away but for the rest of this season, he’s got four months to really adapt to a new manager and to a different style in the Premier League.”

If I were Poch I would go 5 at the back cos Wenger will, that's what he used used to beat us at the Emirates but if he does that means Rose and Aurier and I dont think Poch want's to break up the side that beat Manure and took Liverpool to the wire. I would expect, however, 5 at the back for Juve with Rose and Aurier and he wont lose Son up front for the sake of 5 at the back against the Scum. Poch now has a Plan B which is; take Alli off and bring on Moura and, dare I say it, take Son off and put on Lamela with Wanyama for Dembele, if he needs two holding mids. At last ! A plan B! At last, we have a bench with options. Its been 2 years since a sub came off the bench and scored for Spurs in the prem and that was.....? Son! 2 years without someone coming on who can change a game! Barmy ! absolute madness Levy!!!!

I think the hints we got from the Newport game were there to see. The biggest one was the one survivor Son that played for only 61 min and got replaced by Eriksen. That to me means that Poch was keeping his options open and waiting to see how Alderweireld recovers. I reckon it is today that he will decide whether he goes in with Toby in a back 3 and rests Son or whether he continues with the Liverpool line-up. I don't expect any other shocks. Trippier and Davies will be restored, ditto with Dier and Dembele etc. The bench will be strong and there will be a couple of casualties not even making the 18 man match day squad.

Maybe we should've kept hold of Defoe... He has scored the most goals by far of all PL players, when coming off the bench. And Levy bought him twice! Crouch, Keane and Bent were also 3 of the most regular PL scorers as subs. Of course, not all of their goals were for Spurs.... Levy himself has never once scored from coming off the bench, alledgedly.
