Spurs. Let's be mean to an Old Lady!

Juventus v. Spurs: let's be mean to an Old Lady!

This is what the Champions League is about. Testing yourself against the best in Europe. And on recent evidence, they don't come much better than Juventus.

Finalists last year and twice in the last 3 editions for the Champions League, Massimiliano Allegri's mean certainly know how to navigate the latter stages of the competition. Anchored by club legends such as Buffon and Chiellini, the current squad boasts a hugely impressive defensive record of just one goal conceded in their past 16 matches (since losing 3-2 to Sampdoria on 19 November, Juve have recorded 15 shutouts in all competitions - including clean sheets against Barcelona, Napoli, Inter and Roma).

Going forward, they certainly do not lack options either. Between Higuain, Dybala, Mandzukic, Pjanic and Cuadrado, Juventus boast plenty of attacking talent.

Despite all of this, Juventus supporters are extremely worried about the tie against THFC. Why? Several important factors:

1) Harry Kane is currently deadly in front of goal. Juve's Sami Khedira, who has played with many great players, rates Kane as the best striker in world football at the moment. No team is going to look forward to playing him now. Couple him with more attacking talent in the form of Son, Eriksen and Alli, and our team have the potential to score against anyone.

2) Spurs are arguably the form team of the moment in England. Since our defeat against Manchester City on December 16th, we are unbeaten in 12 games (having won 8 of these). We're also fresh off a run of 7 points from 3 games against Manchester United, Liverpool and Arsenal.

3)Our youth and work rate offer a very different style of football to the average Italian side, and while Juve have a hugely experienced side, a lot of their key players are in the twilight of their careers. Will they be able to keep up with us?

4) Topping a Champions League group with current title holders Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund did not go unnoticed.

5) Finally, and perhaps crucially, we will be travelling with an almost full squad. With the notable exception of Toby Alderweireld, who is being rested for the 1st game but who will likely be back in contention for the return game, every other player should be available for selection. Juve, on the other hand, are missing Howedes, Dybala, Matuidi and Cuadrado, and will likely have to resort to picking players who are not fully fit (Bernardeschi).

All in all, the tie is shaping up to be a fantastic challenge. It will serve as a measuring stick of our current progress and will tell us where we rank in European football. The game could go either way, but I'm quietly confident about our ability to make Juventus nervous.

I am pleased to see Spurs are getting into the heads of opposition players.. the fear factor is not to be underestimated... Man Utd and fergie used this for many years. It has been documented teams were halfway beaten before playing them, yes I include spurs teams over the same years as Fergie was manager. So now we have proven Wembley is our stronghold.. and new stadium next year at WHL we will be a strong team to beat. Which leads me to say...spurs need a trophy win this year to keep Harry etc. happy for at least 2 years at Spurs.

not sure I understand the situation with Toby......not even being on the bench against the scum is one thing but not travelling to Italy either??? Sanchez is keen, a bit head strong and...dont forget he let the ball go over his head and left Lacazette one on one with Lloris on Saturday. In a game like Juve you cant give them that kind of chance. Juve like to keep the ball especially when they are in the lead. Gift them a goal and you'll need two back in London. The only thing we have over them is our speed of attack. Juve will be late into tackles some because we are quicker and some because they want to kick us off the pitch. Anyone who remembers Tardelli will know that Juve still havent lost that Mafia killer mentatlity. Kane will be sharing his shorts with the Juve defence they will be that close to him. Eriksen and Alli will be marked heavily and Alli had better be at his most professional best behaviour cos Juve will wind him up! Son could be the difference for us playing the Bale role coming in and out whist the Juve Defence ties up our front 3. I'll take a draw all night long if it meant we cold have a better crack at them at Wembley. The unknown bit is Loucas Moura will he play will he be an impact sub and if he does will Llorente come on to hit the crosses he sends over or will Moura be running into the box looking for the foul. Could be stale mate cos whilst Juve don't let in many goals they don't score many either but when they do score they are quality! Big step up for us tomorrow night but hey, that's what we are in the CL for to see how good we are!

Block D, you are absolutely bang on with that post imo. How many times in the past we dreaded playing United at OT and now concern ourselves when facing say, City. There is definitely a bit a swing in that psychology. I think that our 'fear factor' will be a major advantage going forward, as long as we polish up on our ruthlessness and clinical finishing. We may only get one chance v Juve, but have to execute it, conversely, will need just a minor lapse of concentration to be on the wrong side of the score line.

Like you Belgian, I too am quietly confident. Oh, and thanks for another article and look forward to 100+ comments. COYS!

Expect MP to play 4231. Dembelle needs to be managed so Wanyama comes in. Lamela could come in for Son, not because Son is playing badly, however, if chasing the game Son and Moura are good options playing against tired defenders.

Critical yes I remember all the times we went to OT and lost... also when I was at WHL.. spurs were 3-0 up at half time, fergie had a hairdryer moment in their dressing room...they came out and scored 5 goals.. and we lost the game in 2nd half.. it was depressing to see. At least I can take some comfort now.. That Man Utd are on the receiving end of seeing their Manchester rivals doing better than them.. and in N London... Arsenal are the same.. LOL.... COYS

As a spurs supporter many years now..... I am going to bet on spurs drawing at Juve. and wining at Wembley. We did it against R Madrid.. why not again??? ( remember we all said taxi for the Milan RB against Bale? Could Maura do the same? or Harry to do same against Juve CB ?? I expect Harry's one penalty score over two games ) Also I'll try to get best odds tomorrow on Spurs to win CL. With a bet on FA Cup win as well. Could even put them all together on an accumulator ?

Can't believe Juve will be nervous of us with their track record & experience. I just hope our super fitness & pressing football will tire them out. Well, you have to be optimistic.Juve will be tougher test than Dortmund or Real because they are so difficult to score against. We were ridiculously wasteful against Arsenal ,whom we should have beaten 5-0. If we get a single chance against Chiellini & co we must take it!!

Off topic, can someone influential, please do a post or petition, to keep the name 'White Hart Lane' somewhere in the new stadium, as it is an integral part of this club and should not be disregarded when the new naming rights are announced, as it would possibly destroy the history and achievements of our beloved club. Rename it in the new south stand or the west stand.

Good article, BelgianSpur. I too share your quiet optimism, especially as you've pointed out: no Dybala, Cuadrado and others for the Old Lady! Another Goal in 10 seconds please Christian, we have the PL record, let's go for the CL one, the key as ever with 2 legs is to score as many goals. I'd hope defence is too good to concede more than once, but I'd happily take a 3-4 win back to Wembley!

I don't doubt we can match Juve's build up play from box to box, but we must be more ruthless in finishing, we won't be allowed 18 shots with 6 on target to score 1 goal as we did on Saturday. One thing the Italians can do is restrict team's shots on goal when under pressure.

XYZ Corporation Stadium at White Hart Lane.

Of course, I would prefer People's Revolution Stadium at White Hart Lane, but I cannot see much enthusiasm from ENIC for my proposal, and the revolution can't pay a fee for naming rights (such fees will be crimes against humanity after the revolution).

Will MP play the same side as v Arsenal? Or, will they all be too knackered? Or, are they all super-human, super-heroes? If they are, I wouldn't make a change.

Rose and Aurier to play? Wanyama? Moura? Lamela?

On me 'ead Son! I mean Ben.

Has Dembele now miraculously gone from being a half-crocked, one game on, one game off kinda guy, to being the fittest man on earth?

Is Hugo French? Is Harry Kane overrated? Can Dele Alli please dive for GB in the next Olympic Games?

This ain't over 'til the fat Old Lady sings the blues!

2-4-6-8 who do we appreciate? 4-2-3-1... Tottenham!

For me, it's either gonna be a low scoring draw or an emphatic away win for the Spurs. A draw is good but for me it has to be the latter.

Barzagli is also missing from the game, through injury. Earlier this morning, I was looking at the predicted lineups and respective squads, and I was thinking that Juve have depth that we can only dream of. Then, I thought, OK they've got a deep squad, but how many of their players would get into our best 11? And I could only name 3. Dybala is world class, Khedira is as good as it gets for a box to box midfielder, and De Sciglio is a solid RB (but that's mostly because I think both of our current RBs are flawed - I wouldn't have picked him over Walker). Apart from those 3, I think we've got players who are just as good, but younger (our CB's for example), or just better. Our best 11 stacks up favourably to theirs, and probably also to most 11's in the world. The biggest difference is that if their best player in any position goes down, they have players who provide acceptable levels of performance while the starter is out. We have some areas with very good depth, but some areas where we're one injury away from a significant drop in performance. We're lucky to be able to rotate against Rochdale.
