Should Spurs Take A Gamble On This Portuguese Star?
A former target of ours looks set to leave Barcelona in the summer. Andre Gomes was heavily linked with a loan switch to the club at the start of the season, but no move materialised before the close of the transfer window.
However, since then the player`s confidence has nosedived and he has made just four league starts for Barca under Ernesto Valverde this campaign. Speaking to Panenka (quotes via Sport) about the difficulties he has been facing, the Portuguese international said:
'I don`t feel well on the field, I am not enjoying the thing I like to do The first six months were pretty good but then things changed.'
'Maybe it`s not the correct word but it turned into a bit of a hell, because I started to feel more pressure. With pressure I feel fine, but with pressure on myself, I don`t. The feeling that I have during games is bad.'
At his best, the 24 year old is a silky creative central midfield player, but he has shown little of his potential since his €35m switch from Valencia two years ago.
The talent is definitely there, but the end product is lacking. It sounds like the ideal pet project for someone like Poch whose ability to polish a rough diamond is second to none. He will likely be available for a knock down price in the summer, but would it be a good idea to target him?
With Christian Eriksen, Dele Alli and others who are so capable in an attacking midfield role, it`s hard to see where the Portuguese star would get game time. He can play in a number of positions, playing wide on the left and on the right hand side for Barcelona on occasions, but if he is going to regain his form, he will need to play in his most natural position.
The vast majority of his games have been in central midfield, but I don`t see him getting into our starting XI. What do you think?
