Referee:

When the draw came out, Fulham away didn`t look as difficult a fixture as it seemed in the last few days. But when the team sheets were out, it certainly put some of our worries away. Poch took the FA cup seriously for probably the first time in his tenure here. And it certainly did pay dividends. A 3-0 victory somehow flattered Fulham in what was a pretty comprehensive display of what our team possesses. The selection in my opinion had more to do with building momentum more than anything else. Playing the first team, aiding their confidence and bringing some harmony back to the club. This was far more than just a 3-0 win in the round of 16.

We started quickly, and never let Fulham settle on the ball. We pressed them high up and made it really physical. We could easily have been 1-0 or 2-0 up even before all the fans took their seats if not for some near misses in the final third. Eriksen was dictating the play and our very own Winksy ran them ragged. Once the first goal went in, everyone breathed a sigh of relief. We really needed that early goal, had the game gone to 60-70 minutes at 0-0 we surely would`ve shat our pants. There were some amazing passages of play mixed with brain farts while playing the final ball. The way we won possession at every possible attempt was fierce yet beautiful. There`s a certain kick we get when our team wins possession by fighting for it, even if it comes up to nothing it still leaves a mark on us. Because these are the signs of desire, and desire is the most basic element required to win football games.

Player Ratings

Vorm 7

Sometimes I think he`s too good to be a deputy keeper, but then if he doesn`t mind who am I to complain. Good handling and very good distribution (take note Hugo) apart from one silly moment.

Trippier 7.5

I think he had a really good game at both ends. Maybe could`ve put in a few more crosses when he had the chance too. But always an outlet for the release pass.

Alderwielreld 7.5

A regular Toby day. Hardly troubled. Never put a foot wrong (although he got one wrong with his head). Smooth as usual.

Vertonghen 7.5

Ideal game for him to make his comeback. Slotted in as if he was never away. His partnership with Toby is crucial to us and so are his occasional forward runs. Great to see him back.

Davies 6.5

Was decent defensively, but he could`ve provided so much more in attack. To be fair Son`s poor form doesn`t help him either. He needs to be more decisive in the final third. I think there`s still a slight lack of confidence.

Wanyama 8

He did what he does best, and that is breaking play and winning possession. He wasn`t just a beast today, he was this rat nibbling away the ball from everyone`s feet.

Winks 8

Everytime he plays he seems to up his game. The Bentalebs and Masons all had great debuts but never really build on them. But this guy is surely grabbing his opportunity. He`s so good in possession. Runs all day, keeps it simple and just plays fine football.

Son 6

Again disappointing from him. He wasn`t in sync with the rest of team at all. Didn`t beat his even once in the whole of 90. But then he`s probably the best option we`ve got right now.

Eriksen 9

One of his best games in a Spurs shirt distribution wise. He had magic in his feet today. Also beat his man quite a few times. Only if he could finish of the chances he had it would`ve been the perfect day for him.

Alli 8.5

He was in the mood today. Was at the heart of everything, be it high energy pressing, intricate movements, slick passing or even a few futile flicks here and there. I think he`s our best player along with Toby and Dembele. I really think so. His hunger coupled with his ability is one of the best assets we have at this club.

Kane 8.5

A hattrick in a London Derby! He must be loving these games, mustn`t he? But I still think he`s off from where he was last year. He`s still not got that touch back. Last year he was scoring goals out of nothing. This year he`s mainly dealing with tap-ins and easy finishes. Just imagine what he would it would be like if he gets back to that form.

Subs

Hardly any time to make any impact. Sissoko did go on a few runs and beat his man, but again no final product.

More of the same

We go into the game at Wembley with confidence now, it`ll be interesting to see whether we play 3 at the back or go with a flat back 4 again. It won`t be as easy as this game. The Gent players were far more technically gifted and were pretty good at retaining possession. But if we show the kind of desire we showed today, we could absolutely batter them. The draw will be out in about 15 minutes from now, let`s hope we get to play one last FA cup game at the lane.
Onwards and upwards.
COME ON YOU SPURS!

That's the way to do it, score relatively early, stamp your authority on the game, ensure that the opposition just never get a real foothold in the game. We kept the ball, played with pace and intensity, scored goals at crucial times and won convincingly and comfortably, well done and not before time. We now play Millwall at home so our path to the SF is firmly in our own hands.

If we don't beat Milwall at the Lane I think we should permanently retire from the FA cup!

Good point, we may become the first team in modern times to win the FA Cup at home.

Thanks for your nice review nikhilavin. Despite your explicit ratings of each player, just shows how seriously the Vital Polls on the right is taken. Before I voted, Onomah was the joint leader at 30%!!! Some peeees take!

Ha Ha, it wasn't Trippier that started the move for Harry's 1st, but the ball boy! Well worth seeing the video!

TBH, I didn't think we played that well at all, considering how determined Fulham seemed to let us have so much space and make it really easy for us whilst not make much effort to win it themselves. I also don't agree that Eriksen had a particularly good match, although it was better than Sons insipid performance. Easy win but still not very impressive in my book. - Millwall up next.

Good article. I also thought we mixed the game up nicely with our quick short-pass game and some useful long balls. We should do this more often as the opposition don't know what's coming.

CJ .... I have to disagree. I though Eriksen had a stand-out game. I wish you'd stop comparing him to that other guy!

As I understand it we can't play the semi-final at home. We'll have to play it at the Lane instead.

Instead of playing all those nasty FA Cup games why not just put the top four in the PL straight into the semi-finals to save time?!

Two poor results and it's all doom and gloom. One good result and everything is right with the world. We're a confused and fickle lot of buggers, aren't we?!

...Nice hat trick from Harry though.......... I was disappointed because after looking confident and controlled for most of the season, I thought we showed a lack of confidence up front in general and gave away the ball, far too often. (Fulham were kind enough to give it straight back to us). Harry took his goals well but they weren't exactly difficult for him. Yes, Eriksen provided two neat assists but he dithered and dallied on the ball a lot and his corners and free-kicks were awful. (Son was just plain bad throughout) - still, I'll repeat what I said after the Gent match and say that I just see the past few matches as a dip in form and that is all... We won comfortably and that is what matters in the end. Hopefully, it can inspire us to get back on track again and start playing the controlled and confident football that we are capable of and have shown for most of the season. - So Ladies and Gents (of Belgium)... Onto Wembley and then... on to Wembley again for an FA Cup final?

CJ ... Someone pointed out on another thread that Harry was scoring different goals ... tap ins and closer shots. I thought the same recently. I'm quite happy with that because it gives him more arrows for his bow and reinforces his position as the complete striker, imo, even though he should have scored 6 against Fulham! And Winks looks so good.

Yes, I think Winks has been great. I've barely seen him put a foot wrong. I think he is a quietly consistent, solid and very reliable young player.

CJ - when we were arguing about Tom Carroll a few months ago, looking back, isn't Winks a better horse to bet on?

The highlight for me yesterday was Trippier's throw-in that led to the opening goal. Yes, the ballboy played his part but at least Tripper was aware of the situation and delivered a perfect, attacking throw to start the move. Rose and Walker take most of our throws and so often they take an eternity to release the ball and more often than not it's to no-one in particular. This was so refreshing from Trippier.

Does anyone know why Man Utd are playing their second leg against St Etienne on Wednesday rather Thursday? I hope it's not because of their involvement in the League Cup on Sunday. When we played Chelsea a couple of years ago we had to play away to Fiorentina on the Thursday night before.

Geoff, Jose was in charge of Chelsea for that match and I distinctly remember him saying it should be no problem playing Thursday and Sunday and effectively dismissed us as whingers. And yet this season he's been moaning constantly about the Europa League schedule! But if they have moved their tie to Wednesday because of the League Cup that would be bang out of order. But not surprising.

Ghanahotspur: EPL goals Winks = 1 (from 2 starts), Dembele = 0 (from 16 starts).. Winks is already outscoring Dembele. Dembele doesn't score too many, and that isn't a problem. The goals mostly should come from the attacking 4, with all other out field players chipping in. What is more of a problem is not having that guy that comes off the bench and scores.

Tony, I am still unhappy with Dembele's returns for goals. He DOES get himself high up near the box, but has a very poor shot in him, considering his physique. He scuffs or has a tame go at it....or he just fafffs about taking on every defender and losing the ball!

Dembele really should get 1 or 2 more goals than he actually does, but it doesn't affect other teams so much when their CMs do not score. For example Chelsea have Matic & Kante starting most of their games at CM, and have no EPL goals this season. We mostly play Dembele & Wanyama in corresponding positions, and Wanyama has 2 epl goals. We are the 5th top scorers in the league, and I am confident that the difference between us and the 4 higher scorers is largely down to goals from subs.
